Polk Audio DSW PRO 550wi
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
So far so good. Easy set up, great bass.
Pump up the excitement on movie night with the Polk DSW PRO 550wi. It sports a 10" woofer driven by a muscular 200-watt amplifier that'll make your hair stand up during intense action sequences. This advanced subwoofer features Polk's exclusive Feed Forward™ technology, which reduces audible distortion without limiting volume. You get quick, precise response throughout the sub's entire frequency range, even at wall-shaking volume levels.
The PRO 550wi also includes the Polk Room Optimizer™, an ingenious feature that lets you specify the location of your sub with one of four options — corner, mid-wall, in-cabinet, or mid-room. The Optimizer then automatically equalizes the sub's response to ensure smooth, clean bass from that position. You can easily access this function, as well as the volume control and phase switch, with the included remote, so you can fine-tune the bass from your favorite listening spot. Removable feet let you position the PRO 550wi for either front-firing or down-firing operation, whichever you prefer.
Replaced my Polk DSW Pro 500 after it gave up the ghost - 9 years of service. The Pro 550 is an admirable replacement. I have my floor shaking (when necessary) sound back! Highly recommend.

So far so good. Easy set up, great bass.
This sub is awesome!!! I watch a couple movie's , Finding NEMO was a hole new experience. Lol I'm very happy and I bet my neighbors are pist so that's just a bonus. I've had a Yamaha 10" I'd say this Polk is better. I really like how you get even bass with the down firing sub and port!!
Replaced my Polk DSW Pro 500 after it gave up the ghost - 9 years of service. The Pro 550 is an admirable replacement. I have my floor shaking (when necessary) sound back! Highly recommend.
Pros: Great sound and nice remote.
Cons: I wish my 500 didn't die - and cost almost as much to repair as a new 550!
I like Polk audio speakers. I'm running a 7.2.2 system and it's all Polk. I like it when I had one, but after adding a second one I'm really pleased. Good product for the money.
Pros: Great Home Theater sub. Accurate, has a pretty nice punch. looks nice and fits well into my home theater.
Cons: None that I can think of. Crutchfield is a little slow giving you your points after a purchase.
Great sound and dynamite set of features. I needed the most basic of them but this is a very flexible device.
Pretty good sounding sub. Adds a good deal of tight, accurate base to a small to medium sized room. My family room is large, so I actually have 2 subs to get enough base. This sub alone is not loud enough for the size room I have it in. There have been some reliability issues - the first one I received was very quiet and I had to return it for a replacement. The 2nd one worked well for 3-1/2 years but then would not power on. Customer service was good and I am returning the amp for service/replacement. My 2nd sub is a cheaper, older (15 years old) Polk powered subwoofer and it just keeps going!
Pros: - solid build, looks nice, clean accurate bass for small-medium sized room, remote control
Cons: - must pay extra for wireless adapter - some reliability issues
I have a pair of Infinity P-363 speakers fed by a Yamaha R-S700 amp. These speakers sound great with good bass but I found myself most satisfied setting the amp's bass dial to the 3 o'clock position. So, I thought, why not try a powered subwoofer. I'm not a kid and like listening to mellower stuff like bluegrass and traditional Celtic, but also the '60s and '70s rock I grew up with. I was definitely not seeking the thump-thump stuff I hear from some cars. But what the Polk DSW Pro550wi does, set at a relatively low setting, is nicely compliment the Infinity's bass. It adds a foundation of notes so low that you almost feel as well as hear. If you want that thump-thump, it can definitely accommodate you. As a bonus, because of the way powered subwoofer notes seem to radiate everywhere, the small bookshelf speakers in my kitchen also benefit from the Polk, which is in my living room.
Pros: Crutchfield's expert sale staff, free shipping and low return fee, removes the risk of buying online. I returned a big heavy item, so have tested that policy.
Cons: If you put this Polk powered subwoofer in an apartment, your neighbors will hear it as well as you. It's unbelievable how those bass notes travel.
I bought this subwoofer to replace an older Paradigm 12" subwoofer from 1999. The Polk is a nice speaker but is definitely not on the same level as the Paradigm. The Polk plays accurately and decent volume but I have to turn up the volume on the subwoofer to get close to the level of my old subwoofer. This subwoofer works well in a small room, but needs more volume in a larger room. Overall it is a nice subwoofer and plays nicely, but I should have spent more money for my needs and purchased a more powerful subwoofer.
Pros: The subwoofer looks very nice, it is built well and I like the addition of a remote control. The music reproduction is very accurate and it gives depth to the movie soundtrack.
Cons: Needs more power, not great in a larger room, works well in a smaller room
Very tight bass with a convenient hookup. Built in crossover works well.
Pros: Nice look!
Paired this Polk Audio DSW PRO 550wi subwoofer with the Polk Audio Blackstone TL350 home theater speaker system, and a Pioneer VSX-1021-K receiver using the LFE interface. This system serves daily as my living room home theater. Unfortunately, this subwoofer failed in less than 4.5 years of service.
Pros: The subwoofer is capable of delivering plenty of volume, which is adjustable using either the remote or buttons on the back panel. Physically, it's build quality is very solid. The black finish is a rubbery / plastic coating that's easy to clean. The down-firing design also provides protection to the speaker, which is nice if it's located in a room with plenty of walking traffic.
Cons: The subwoofer failed in less than 4.5 years of service. One day it failed to power on, only to discover a blown fuse. I've replaced the fuse 3 times, but they immediately blow as soon as I power on the sub using the I/O power switch on the rear panel. Additionally, the 'Auto' power setting is unreliable. The subwoofer has always experienced problems randomly powering off while in use, and would require the volume to be turned up very loud to power on.
I love this sub, I added it to my home theatre/music system. It replaced a smaller sub to back up a set of RTiA7 towers. This sub was the perfect choice, great balance great bass, it has greatly improved my music and movies.
Pros: love the remote and the ability to change all adjustments with it.
I like that it can be wireless.
Pros: I like that it is wireless.
Cons: I don't like the thought of paying separately for a wireless adapter.
Great product and the support was phenomenal. Love it, has revolutionized my entertainment experience at home.
Pros: Balanced and great bass
Not as loud as I thought. Need to get with technical support to find out what is going on.
Cons: Need tech support
Amazing Bass and not too overpowering. Works in my room great!
Awesome product . excellent power and deep bass.
Pros: Every thing is good about it.
Cons: I din find any.
This sub sounds great with my Polk bookshelf speakers. It has just the right amount of punch without being boomy.
Pros: Looks great, good warranty
Purchased to replace 8yo DSW Pro 500. sounds great! no problems
Pros: Ease of setup, wireless capability
Found this puppy in the scratch & dent sale for dirt cheap. Can't find the scratch or the dent! Recommended by Advisor "Doug". He was helpful and knowledgeable for the type of setup I needed for my room and listening. All the specs are already on the site for you who know what you're looking for, I'll just add: I'm one happy customer
Pros: Obviously getting this sub for the scratch & dent price is a pro ! Great cross-over and smooth sound for music. Paired REALLY well with my Vega R5's.
Easy to set up - I have it set up using PWSK-1 wireless. Great sound - spend the time listening to music to get the right crossover frequency set to match your speakers. It makes a big difference to total sound. Bass is tight and professional sounding.
Pros: Great sound for a larger sized room Quality sound - tight
Cons: none so far
A good quality sub for medium/large sized rooms. Low frequencies produced by the sub is clean with chest thumping bass.
Pros: Quality sound
Cons: Lack of a rotary style knob to control the volume that will take out the "guesswork" of controlling volume of the sub
This thing surprised me. New I would get some descent lows for movies and music, but I wasn't expecting the thump. You can really feel the bass. And as always Crutchfield is great. The best online store or any store that I have ever dealt with. The shipping is usually a couple days ahead of what they tell you, and as with most orders from Crutchfield was free.
Pros: Bass hammers
This Sub is bad.. definitely hits harder then I had expected for just having a 200w amp. I wasn't to impressed at first until I call Crutchfield Customer service. These guys are awesome and fast. In less then 2 min they had me in the settings getting all my speakers n sub tuned in just right. Turned the sub up on the receiver, now it's got the floor shaking without the distortion sound. Sounds good with action movies and music. Has that hard hitting bass. Can't say enough good things about Crutchfield will definitely recommend to everyone
Pros: Hits hard and never gets tired. Great sound and no distortion
Cons: Don't know if i wouldve paid full price for it.. lot of money for me but it definitely is worth every penny
Does great in my basement, nice bass! once I set the crossover on my receiver so bookshelves were at 80db and the sub at 40 db im not over working my tsx110 bookshelf speakers, and the sun handles the bass beautifully! $300 off with the Polk deal was a great bargain.
Pros: sound, remote, package deal,
very powerful. nice full quality bass sound. I would definitely plan on using the rca inputs rather than wire terminals.
we have still not been able to set it up properly. while it is working, not much bass to be heard from it. something of this size i would have expected to be blasted out of the room at high volume settings. nothing of the sort so far. need to call the help/support line but have not had time to yet. for this price point, i would not expect to have to get support right out of the box.
Paired with Polk's Blackstone TL350 series, this sub fills the room perfectly. The bass notes are deep but do not shake the whole house and bleed over into other rooms. Currently using it wired LFE.
Pros: Rich, deep sound. Ability to add wireless.
This thing really puts out the bass! Great "programming" features too. I highly recommend.
Decent Bass in a compact package
Pros: Easy connections and set up features
A versatile sub, which along with an array of Polk RTi A1's and matching center channel, provides cinematic magic in a 5.1 or 7.1 surround system. Recommended.
Pros: Easy setup. Options that allow fine tuning. Sufficient power for most home installations.
Cons: Should you wish to employ the sub in its forward-facing position, a right-angled 15-amp power cord and a right-angled RCA adapter are a must, IMO.
I started with the psw105 and I'm glad I upgraded to this model just a tighter sounding sub I realize there are better subs out there maybe even close in price but with the polk promotion you really can't go wrong I may not pay full price for it but I am happy with it for what I have in it
Very nice, tight, punchy bass for music. Love being able to control the volume with the remote. I like this sub better than my old Velodyne. And of course Crutchfield got it to me rapidly.
Pros: Plenty of house shaking bass. Remote control.
easy hook up, sounds great,
Pros: look stylish and modern
Good sub but it hums when used with the wireless adaptor.
Pros: Good strong bass and easy setup
Cons: The remote is not very dependable, only works when it wants to. Hums when using the wireless adaptor. Does not have auto off when the wireless adaptor is used.
Very good Deal i got on these, Deep bass, A lot of options for set-up!!!
Nice good clear bass. not over the top but not low either.
Pros: clear bass
very nice, love the night (wife) mode.
Sub is spouse friendly because of the remote. Sub is a great match for our home system and works properly with the Logitec remote also purchased from Crutchfield. I bought our sub from the outlet as a scratch and dent item and saved $200.00. Crutchfield delivered in 2 days. We are pleased with our purchase and service from Crutchfield. Louis U.
I was going to buy only one of these but Crutchfield had a special so I bought two. Thank you Crutchfield! I wired these bad boys in stereo using the speaker level inputs to the speaker B terminals on my reviever. Works like a charm. No problems with the remote like the other reviews mention, and one remote works for both subs so if I do ever have a problem I got back up. They sound fantastic. I sware, they always give you the correct bass for whatever you may be listening too. 100% satisfied.
Pros: Sounds fantastic and looks great compared to others. Remote included.
Cons: Nothing really.
This sub has some really good bass to help immerse you in the video. I have to admit I turn mine up to around 75% and turn up the sub level on the receiver to +5db, whereas YPAO set it to +1 db with the sub volume on 50%. The auto turn on seems to be hit or miss so I just turn it on and off as I need it. The remote included works fine for me, but I have programmed my Harmony remote so I don't use the included remote. Overall it's a very nice unit, it looks as sleek as the rest of my Polk gear, and it performs well.
so far only one star since this is the second one I have, the first one I had to return because it didn't work. still frustrated because now this second does not work, I need to call support but have not had time, but I am truly upset because last year I did my entire room over and it looks awesome. have it hooked up to denon AVR 2312CI with polk speakers. using it wireless, will call this week and see if they can help, but at this point very unhappy.
First off, I don't max out the volume when watching a movie but I do turn it up loud. This subwoofer does the job with impressing bass! I do not have any regrets buying this subwoofer! I did not use the wireless feature so I can't speak for it.
Pros: Excellent bass and wireless feature
Clean, solid, and room filling. For me this was a GREAT buy. I went with the wireless kit because I would have needed over 50 ft of cable plus the room it's being used in gets rearranged for Christmas so I liked the flexibility of being able to move it wherever I want with with no real inconvenience. There are 2 problems with going wireless one is the signal so you might have to play around with placement. The other problem is if you go wireless you will have to manually turn the sub on/off everything you use it as opposed to a wired connection which has a standby mode and will turn on/off manually. Besides these 2 minor things I love this sub it shakes the house!
Cons: Wireless can be problematic Wireless requires manuallying turn sub on/off
The Class D amp on this beautiful sub provides clean, earth shaking bass. The adjustments for location, phasing and volume will allow even the most critical audiophile to get it "just right". My unit is hard-wired to the LFE input, so I have no issues with wireless interference. The finish is superb, as should be expected with any product from Polk Audio. The remote control dose require line-of sight , which may be a problem for someone who has the unit stashed away behind furniture, but that shouldn't be a problem unless you want to continually tweak the settings. Overall, a highly recommended sub that will put a smile on your face. I should also add that this unit went on sale a few days after I purchased it, and Crutchfield automatically gave me a credit for the price difference on any future purchase. Another reason to go to Crutchfield first when looking for electronics.
Pros: Beautiful finish, awesome performance.
Cons: Remote requires line-of-sight (should not be a big deal for most people).
I recently purchased an Onkyo TXNR 609, a pair of Polk RTiA3s. a Polk Blackstone TL center, and this BEAST! It will Literally vibrate the concrete slab under my house, Unbelievable! After adjusting, sound is incredible, blends perfect with system for music, shakes the house for movies. If your in the market, call Crutchfield, discuss your desires, and order. You won't be disappointed.
Pros: Solid, tight bass.
Cons: Easy to "over do it".
I wanted the 12" DSW PRO 660 because I was replacing a 12" sub boasting 250 W RMS / 550 W Max and I didnt want a lesser experience. The 660wi is only $100 more than the 550wi but you have to set your budget somewhere so I went with the DSWPRO 550wi. Surprise Surprise this 550wi out performs the 12" Northridge E250 and I mean its not even a close contest. the 550wi has a class D amp. Theoretical power efficiency of class D amplifiers is 100%. An ideal class A B amplifier has a theoretical maximum efficiency of 78% and the Northridge E series probably would not have "ideal efficiency" so believe me when I say this 550wi has big block engine performance and these 200 Watts easily outperform the 250 watts of the 12" and I have never turned the 550wi up past 75% I'm pretty sure pictures will fall and nails will loosen from wall studs
Pros: Clean Powerfull Bass, Modular for down or front firing, Wireless Capable, Remote is usefull.
Cons: Accessories are expensive - $50 grill cover $100 wireless adaptor
Matches well with TL350 setup. Crossover easy to adjust. Don't find much use to remote once I was comfortable with setup
Pros: Multiple setups depending on room type, flooring, etc. Matches well with T350
Cons: Wish remote had frequency adjuster
literally blown away when watching Blue Ray movie Thor; ground ashaking. Now listening to Jazz or regular TV, the beast is tamed and mild.
Pros: Range of response, and with wireless connectivity to receiver can place it anywhere. Using Crutchfield purchased Sony receiver which calibrated the 7 Polk Audio speakers, and with Crutchfield help in setting up, what more do you want? Not to mention the savings on the subwoofer!
This subwoofer sounds incredible. My 4-year old girl told me that she could feel the music with her entire body. Watching movies with the subwoofer is the only way to watch movies. I subtracted one star from rating because of the interference on my subwoofer via the wireless connection when my receiver and other electronics are turned off. However, the wireless connection is the only setup for my subwoofer that my wife would tolerate. She did not want to see wires or the subwoofer in our room. I have the subwoofer tucked away where you can not see but you can most definitely feel. So far, I am very pleased with my purchase. I would buy it again. I hope this review helps.
I have this sub match up with Polk Audio TL250's all I can say is WOW this sub is awesome very good choice very happy!!!
It rocks the house. Rocks. The. House. Rocks it. It can be set up to play nice with the rest of your system or it can blow you away. It's serious.
doesn't look like much when I pulled it from the box but once I hooked it up and played a movie, I couldn't believe the rumble from this thing. The bass sounds great from anywhere in the room. I actually had to turn it down a little. The performance is great. I have the soundbar 50 that I run with it. Together they are awesome. Music also has a nice thump to it. Great product.
My advisor JR recommended this sub and let me tell you he knew what he was talking about. A great sub that delivers alot of bass for a great price!
Right out of the box, I wasn't sure what to make of this sub. but once I put it together with the Polk RTiAs A9s, it was like the icing on the cake. Testing it out with some BD movies with heavy sound fx, you can really hear and feel the base pulsing from the powerful sub.
This sub is awesome! It goes great with my Polk TL250 speakers and Yamaha RX-V667 receiver. The bass is tight and it drops very low. It creates a low vibration you can feel in the floor. The remote comes in very handy at night, when you need to limit the bass. I would highly recommend.

Driver: The DSW PRO 550 uses a 10" Dynamic Balance composite polypropylene cone driver for deep, accurate response with low distortion. For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofer utilizes a rubber surround.
Klippel Optimized Woofer: By using a state-of-the-art Klippel Distortion Analyzer, Polk Audio is able to optimize the woofer's motor structure, voice coil alignment and suspension for the best possible performance even at extreme listening levels.
Class D Amplifier: The subwoofer is powered by a high-current Class D amplifier producing 200 watts RMS power (400 watts Dynamic power) that supplies clean power for loud bass and a wide dynamic range necessary to recreate a life-like experience in your home. The efficiency of a Class D digital amplifier translates into high-power, and cool, reliable operation with low distortion.
Feed Forward Distortion Suppression Technology: This technology maximizes acoustic output as it reduces audible distortion. Feed Forward is a zero latency system that maximizes dynamic output of the subwoofer system without relying on slow responding feedback techniques. What you'll hear is quick, precise bass output with minimal audible distortion, even at loud volume levels.
Enclosure: The DSW PRO 550 features a bass-reflex enclosure with non-resonant MDF construction and internal bracing for deep bass impact with superior detail and accuracy. The subwoofer's enclosure's durable onyx black finish can be painted to match your room decor, if desired.
Downward Radiating Slot Port: The DSW PRO 550 features a downward radiating slot port which lessens turbulence, noise and distortion. The result is deep, clean and accurate bass.
Video Shielded: The DSW PRO 550 is magnetically shielded for placement near video monitors. You should still allow at least 18" of space between your subwoofer and any tube television. LCD, DLP and Plasma TVs are not affected by magnetism.
Frequency Response: The overall frequency response for the subwoofer is 23-160Hz, and the -3 dB frequency response is 30-125Hz.
Repositionable Feet: The DSW PRO 550 features repositionable rubber or spike feet which allow you to orient the subwoofer on its "back" to turn it into a front-firing woofer when you want to hide the subwoofer away in cabinets. There is an optional woofer grille (item # 107DSW500G, sold separately) available when the subwoofer is used in a front firing application.
Note: The remote control may not operate when the subwoofer is placed in a cabinet with the driver facing into the room. If this occurs, adding an IR repeater will enable the remote control to communicate with the subwoofer.
IR Wireless Remote Control: The DSW PRO 550 comes supplied with a credit card sized IR wireless remote control which operates the following subwoofer's controls - Volume, Mute, Phase, Night and Polk Room Optimizer. All commands are sent to the subwoofer via IR control. The IR receiver is located on the front of the subwoofer when the subwoofer is its downward firing configuration. There is a blue LED behind the woofer's logo badge which blinks to confirm the subwoofer has received and responded to the remote's instructions. The LED feature can be turned off.
Note: The subwoofers crossover setting must be set using the controls located on the rear panel of the woofer.
Polk Room Optimizer: The DSW PRO 550's remote control incorporates the Polk Room Optimizer (PRO) feature. The Polk Room Optimizer feature allows you to place the subwoofer where you want it in your listening room. Based upon the four most common room placements for subwoofers, the Polk Room Optimizer maximizes sound quality for you, smoothing out the bass response that a particular room placement creates. There are four push-button room equalization presets on the remote that correct for room boundary effects for typical room placements: "cabinet," "corner," "mid-wall," and "mid-room." The result is great bass performance no matter where you place your DSW PRO 550 subwoofer.
Night Mode: Night Mode compresses the dynamic range of the woofer's output, so you hear low-level bass detail at lower volumes.
Volume Control: The DSW PRO 550 has a push button volume control to adjust the volume of the subwoofer relative to the other speakers in the system. The volume is adjustable from 0 to 40. The blue LED on the front panel will indicate the volume level using a combination of short and long blinks. The volume can also be adjusted using the supplied wireless remote.
Phase Switch: The subwoofer's IR wireless remote features a phase control which allows you to select 0-degrees (normal), 90-degrees, 180-degrees (reverse) or 270-degrees. This control enables the subwoofer to blend more seamlessly with your main speakers. If the bass sounds muddy or unclear, using the phase control can sometimes strengthen the bass "attack."
Low-Pass Filter: The DSW PRO 550 offers a continuously variable low-pass filter, adjustable from 60-120 Hz. The cut-off frequency must be manually set from the subwoofer's control panel.
3-Way Power Switch: The subwoofer has a 3-way power switch on the rear panel. You can select "Auto", which turns the unit on automatically when an input signal is received and off 15 minutes after the signal stops; "On", which keeps the unit on and "Standby", which turns the unit off. The LED power indicator glows green when the unit is on, red when the unit is off and yellow during standby mode.
Note: If the receiver's subwoofer output is unfiltered, you should use either the left or right Line Input of the subwoofer.
Line (Filtered) Inputs/Outputs: The subwoofer has gold plated left and right RCA Line Level inputs. The inputs are for use with electronics featuring unfiltered "Pre Out" jacks (Example: a separate pre-amp processor with a separate amplifier). It may require "Y adapters" to connect the left and right outputs of the pre-amp processor to both the subwoofer and the power amplifier. The line outputs allow you to send a filtered signal to a power amplifier to drive bookshelf speakers.
Speaker Level Input/Output: The subwoofer has 5-way binding post connections for front speaker level input and output. The subwoofer's low-pass filter takes the low frequencies (based on the setting of the filter) and sends it to the subwoofer. The speaker level outputs send a filtered signal to your connected speakers.

I always liked Polk Audio speakers. All home theater speakers are Polk audio. My old Polk Audio 440wi PRO went out on me after 8years of enjoyment. I had a similar situation with a Polk DSW PRO 500, so I ordered a Polk DSW PRO 550 from Crutchfied as a replacement. Meanwhile I repaired the 500. Same symptoms as yours. Mine had a small capacitor that failed in the power supply circuit. (shorted) The capacitor cost less than $1. I had a Infinity prior to the Polk that got to where it refused to wake up at low volume levels. [ James Jun 08, 2017 ]

I have mine wired, but it is wireless ready. You may have to buy some separate components (depending on your receiver?), but it is wireless capable according to the manual. Page 7 of the manual should tell you everything you need to know about setting up the sub wirelessly. I tried to add a link to the manual but it was not accepted in this text box. Go to the Polk audio website. Click "Support" at the top of the screen and enter "550" in the text box and the manual will be the first one on the list. I hope this helps! [ RICHARD Jul 10, 2014 ]
