I've been a Polk Audio home theater enthusiast for years, having owned several different-sized Polk systems that I've loved. If I was building a new surround sound system today, I'd strongly consider the HTS 12 for my all-important bass production.

This hard-hitting sub can fill even large rooms with deep, responsive bass. My hunch? If you're like me, you may look forward to watching movies with family or friends, just to show them how good the bass sounds.

Polk Audio HTS 12 powered subwoofer

The Polk Audio HTS 12 powered sub features a sleek, rounded enclosure and a removable grille.

A new design adds visual interest

This sleek sub features a hip, updated design with rounded corners and a slot on the bottom that shows off the flared, down-firing port — a bit of a departure from Polk's previous enclosures. Cosmetically, it's my favorite Polk sub design to date.

But the HTS 12 offers more than just good looks. It pairs a 12", front-firing driver with a 200-watt amp for impactful bass from music and movies. Use it as part of a stereo music system, or as part of a Polk Audio Signature home theater system.

Engineered to fail....sadly.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This the second sub I received. The first one was dead on arrival, Crutchfield was great and promptly sent me a replacement. This woofer has a very nice design and as far as looks it is probably the nicest. The part that counts, what does it sound like? This sub is ok, it provides deep accurate bass and compliments a home theater well during movies. Listening to music on the other hand sounds ok but pops at mid to high volume during a steady bass line. Upon further inspection, I suspect the popping is due to lack of power to the driver. The wires leading from amp to the driver are just tiny. I have never seen such anemic wires (probably 22 AWG) on a sub and remember that they are supposed to feed 200 watts of power to the driver. Polk ought to be ashamed of that and as a customer of Polk for many occasions, I feel like a sucker. I have headphones that have heavier gauge wires then these. Smaller wires will create much more heat on both the driver and amp and thus shorter life. Engineered to fail? I think yes.

Pros: nice exterior design accurate response at low to mid volume during music good for tv and movies.

Cons: poor heat sinking underrated wires "popping" at mid to high volumes during a steady bass line.

Better have a big room for this one

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's all about where you put it... Incredible sound! Super clear and deep. Way too much power for me. This thing took over my living room. I could almost feel my chest vibrating three houses away. Great way to make your neighbors hate you. It had to be returned. I had it in the middle of my 15'x30' With 8' ceilings, that was the only way I could make it it usable in my house. I ended up returning it as it was just too much sub for me. I went with an SVS sealed box sub and it is more tameable for my needs. The look and finish on the Polk were also top notch. I wish I could have kept it.

Pros: Super deep, super clear sound. The port design is magic. This sub will overpower smaller rooms. Also, room placement is everything with this one.

Cons: Too much power and sound for a small size house.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have always been a Polk Audio fan because they are an exceptional value. You get amazing quality for what I consider a bargin price sale or not. So I began building my new home theater system a few months back and my advisor Kristina has been there to help every step of the way. I have built an all Polk Signature 5.2 system (Atmos is next) and am thrilled with the results. I started with the Polk S55 towers paired with dual Polk hts 10 subwoofers along with the S35 center and s10 surrounds...this was great but I wanted more for my large room so I swapped to the s60 towers it was a fantastic upgrade but I felt I needed to go bigger on the subwoofers for a little more oomph. So let's get to my review of the HTS 12 subwoofer. For years I have used 2 subwoofers because I achieve poor room response with only one and experience uneven bass across all seats. The Hts 12 makes everything sound richer and fuller with tons of depth for both music and movies. Movies are intense and coupled with the other signature series speakers completely enveloping. It performs effortlessly. I highly recommend the Hts 12 for the price! Get 2 you won't regret it!

Pros: Well rounded with accurate sound. Adds tremendous depth to movies and music

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Polk Audio HTS 12 is a 100% complete package. The sound quality that comes from this sub is really good. Bass is tight, accurate and clean. I also own the polk audio S60's mains, S35 center, and S20's rears and honestly they are all amazing. Powered with a Yamaha RX-A2070 I have zero complaints. Back to the sub, if you are trying to blow away your friends with sound; well this sub will do that. I really can not put into words the overall tonal balance of Polks new signature line, and this subwoofer is the perfect match for the system.

Pros: Sound Value Quality

Great bass and lfe

John from Sandwich, IL on 7/12/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Had a psw111 sub but decided to upgrade to this sub after buying new signature series speakers. The bass in music and lfe sounds in movies is a big improvement over my old sub. The sound from this sub is much more defined. I kept the old sub on all the time because the auto on/off didn't work so well but now I can use a 12 volt trigger to turn this sub on and off. As a bonus the black walnut matches the other speakers in my system. I definitely recommend this sub.

Pros: Well defined bass and lfe. 12 volt trigger.

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Expensive, but worth it! This is an amazing piece of audio equipment. I'm experiencing bass with this one single sub that I never did before with two lesser subs. The one this 200 watt sub replaced was 250 watts, but it never delivered such full rich bass like I am getting now. I will eventually buy another one identical to this one. I will also be replacing all my other speakers with Polk speakers. I am definitely sold on Polk Audio equipment.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very happy with my HTS 12. The black finish matches the finish on my Polk center speaker. The build and appearance of the HTS 12 is fantastic. Very clean bass. My main use of it is for movies, and this sub brings the experience to a whole new level. After calibrating with my Denon receiver, medium subwoofer volume control is perfect for movies. It is very loud and I don't have to crank up the subwoofer volume control. Highly recommended.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced my old Polk ported subs with two of these. They are cleaner sounding than the old ones. No "boominess" to them at all. Just clean and clear. I run duals all the time and they are shared between my Onkyo (for the home theatre) and my Nad M2, along with the Paradigm 100's for music. They sound great with both. The room they are in is a large room with vaulted ceilings, hardwood floors, half walls and large glass windows everywhere - an acoustic nightmare- and they fill the room just fine. I don't miss a single note. And they look good too! I was looking at some higher end ported subs, but due to the room configuration (and wife) I needed something with a smaller footprint. These fit the bill and I am very happy that I made this choice.

Pros: Clean clear quality pounding bass. Oh yeah!

Cons: I had to turn the volume up a little higher than my old, less powerful Polks, but that is probably because the old ones ported out of the front.

Great product. I already have a set of Polk tower speakers and this sub picks up where they leave off. Greatly enhances the sound!!

Pros: Great finish, build quality, and of course, sound.

Cons: None so far!!

Thumps!!!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love this sub. Completes my home theater in style and sound. Had it set way too high when I first hooked it up and it shook the walls. Heard no distortion just pounding bass. Love Polk signature series in look and function. Major upgrade from old onkyo theater in a box system. Highly recommend.

Pros: Beautiful, thumps, no distortion

Cons: Nothing yet, doubt I'll find anything in future.

Features

12" Polypropylene Dynamic Balance Woofer: The HTS 12 houses a front-firing 12" polypropylene long-throw woofer with rubber surround for deep, accurate bass. The woofer incorporates Polk's patented Dynamic Balance technology and is Klippel optimized to provide clean, clear bass, better linearity, lower distortion, and greater durability.

200W Class D Amplifier: The Polk HTS10 employs a 200 watt (RMS) / 400 watt (Peak) Class D amplifier for dynamic bass performance.

Power Port Technology: The Polk HTS 12 powered subwoofer utilizes floor-firing patented Power Port Technology for deeper bass response and reduced port noise. The Power Port floor-firing design smoothly transitions air flow from the speaker into your listening area for deep, extended bass impact while minimizing turbulence, distortion, and port noise. At the port tuning frequency, Power Port equipped subwoofers have 3dB less port noise than similarly configured subwoofers without Power Port.

Non-Resonant Enclosure: The powered sub's strong, rigid, and acoustically inert curved enclosure reduces unwanted internal standing waves for less audible coloration. Its non-resonant Meddite MDF construction, with extra bracing and thick baffle, ensures a more lifelike sound.

Controls: Built-in controls for variable volume, low pass filter, and phase let you tune in optimum bass levels. All controls are found on the rear-panel of the powered sub.

  • Volume: The rotary volume knob adjusts the volume of the powered sub relative to the other speakers in the system.
  • Low-Pass Filter: The variable low-pass filter is adjustable from 40-160 Hz. The low-pass filter is only active for the powered sub's stereo RCA inputs. The low-pass filter is deactivated when using the powered sub's LFE input.
  • Phase: The phase switch allows you to select 0-degrees (normal) or 180-degrees (reverse). If the bass sounds muddy or unclear, toggling the phase control can sometimes strengthen the bass attack.

Line-Level Inputs: The Polk HTS 12 powered subwoofer is outfitted with an unfiltered LFE input and filtered stereo RCA inputs (subwoofer cable not included).

  • LFE Input (Unfiltered): The LFE input consists of an unfiltered mono-RCA jack (the LFE input bypasses the powered sub's variable low pass filter). Using the LFE input when connecting to an AV receiver or integrated amp with a filtered LFE output and built-in crossover control.
  • Stereo RCA Input (Filtered): The Stereo input consists of a left & right RCA jack (both jacks are filtered). Use the Stereo input when connecting to a receiver or integrated amp that does not have an LFE output, but does provide a preamp output.

Auto & DC Power On/Off: The powered subwoofer will automatically turn on when an audio signal is received and off when there is no audio signal for about 20 minutes. There is also a 12V trigger input on the back of powered sub which allows it to power on with your receiver or integrated amp that features a 12V trigger output (the 12V trigger provides a faster auto on/off).

Note: There is a switch on the back of the powered sub that indicates which power on/off method you will be using - Auto or DC.

Placement: You may place the powered subwoofer anywhere in your room, but it will perform best when it's on the same side of the room as your system's front speakers. Also, placing the subwoofer near a wall or in a corner will increase its loudness.

Frequency Response: The overall frequency response for the subwoofer is 22-180Hz, and the -3 dB frequency response is 28-120Hz.

Why did you buy this?

Have an older and smaller model from 2001 that's worked very well. [ S  Sep 26, 2018 ]
I have Polk Audio 7.1 outfitted already in my home theatre. This is going to bring me up to 7.2 [ Demelius  Sep 07, 2018 ]
I've always liked Polk and this sub is to match the one I already have and to "balance" the room. (-: [ Kirk  Jun 18, 2018 ]
Looks like the best deal for size and sound [ Michael  May 05, 2018 ]
Tried the smaller Polk subwoofer and didn't like it. After talking to Oliver at Crutchfield, this one sounded like the right choice. [ Shari  Apr 19, 2018 ]
I was actually looking for a Yamaha subwoofer to replace the one that recently failed on me. However, the choices for that brand seem to be limited. I've heard that Polk is a very good brand for audio equipment and with all eleven reviews being 5 star, this particular sub seemed to be a good choice. I'm very excited to receive this product and hear what quality of low frequencies it delivers. [ Steve  Apr 05, 2018 ]
Saved money on this sub via your scratch and dent pricing. Also it seem to be pretty good unit according to others who purchased it. [ Marc A.  Mar 14, 2018 ]

Have Polk center speaker. Crutchfield has nice shopping site. [ Manuel  Mar 29, 2018 ]
I have a Polk subwoofer that has lasted forever, but I am using two mismatched subs right now and I would like a matching pair. I am using them in a large area and I needed them to be ported. These fit the bill. [ Tech head  Mar 07, 2018 ]
I currently have Polk center, front and surround speakers and their performance has been outstanding. Based on my experience and the new design I chose the Polk HTS 12 to complete my surround system. [ Thomas  Jan 10, 2018 ]
#1- It is a work of art and should work perfectly with my Polk signature series speakers #2- I bought 2 S60 towers, bundled with the S35 center, Onkyo TX-NR777, and lastly the elephant in the room- The Polk PSW125. What a massive sub! You would think the elephant would mix in well with the signature series, but honestly the different cone material makes it stick out from the herd. The crisp, accurate and exceptional response is just not there (Comparatively). [ Zachary  Dec 02, 2017 ]

3 questions already asked

I do not see why not however I would recommend adding some type of rubber "feet" to eliminate vibration between the enclosure and floor. This sub is impressive and does a great job filling a room! [ Anthony  Sep 10, 2018 ]
Should nbe fine, but you might decrease the output slightly, as the sound coming out of the vent (normally on the bottom) wouldn't be reinforced by reflecting off of the floor. [ Robert  Sep 09, 2018 ]
That would block part of the airflow into the speaker box so I don't think that would be a good idea besides it's almost a perfect cube [ Michael  Sep 09, 2018 ]
Not sure but I think it wouldn't be a good idea to get the best performance [ BALAJI  Sep 09, 2018 ]
I don't think that would be a good idea [ Michael  Sep 09, 2018 ]
Oh I'm sure it would work for a while. I would not though due heat build up. I have had to replace mine due to amp failure. The air moves at the bottom sort of like a free air port. Also, I would think it would move a little on the throttling low frequency this sub creates. [ Gunny  Sep 09, 2018 ]
You could lay it on it's side. Just not the back {or front}. [ james  Sep 09, 2018 ]
I would not recommend it. No [ Reggie  Sep 09, 2018 ]
Mine does the same thing. When I push it to hard it stops playing and I have the red flashing light from the rear. I had the gain to high on back of sub. I cut it down just a bit and all has been good. [ Cameron  Apr 16, 2018 ]
I'm sorry, but I have not experienced this problem. In fact my unit has performed quite well. [ Thomas  Apr 16, 2018 ]
We added two 2x4 boards to lift it off of the floor and we have never had any problem. I would recommend trying it to see if perhaps the heating up is happening. My neighbor plays in a band professionally and recommended it. [ Deidre  Apr 16, 2018 ]
separate cord that plugs into the back of unit [ eddie  Feb 26, 2018 ]
It plugs directly into the unit. [ Thomas  Feb 26, 2018 ]
Plugs in [ Aaron  Feb 26, 2018 ]
the power cord plugs into the unit and into the wall at the other end fantastic speaker -very very happy with it [ greg  Feb 26, 2018 ]
The power cord plugs into the unit. It is not hard-wired. [ DAVID  Feb 26, 2018 ]
