Overview

Our take on the JBL Club 6500C

It's simple. Your factory speakers are getting you down. JBL's Club Series speakers are the clear solution. JBL equipped this Club 6500C 6-1/2" component system with UV-resistant polypropylene woofers for stellar performance even under the stickiest (or chilliest) environmental conditions — after all, your car door isn't the most forgiving place to reside.

The well-rounded component system

It's simple. Your factory speakers are getting you down. JBL's Club Series speakers are the clear solution. JBL equipped this Club 6500C 6-1/2" component system with UV-resistant polypropylene woofers for stellar performance even under the stickiest (or chilliest) environmental conditions — after all, your car door isn't the most forgiving place to reside.

Strong performance

The speaker's patented Plus One™ woofer structure extends the surface area of the cone to give you a better bass experience than other speakers this size. The separate 3/4" edge-driven PEI tweeter expands the high-frequency range, so you'll hear musical details that you never heard from your old speakers.

A match for any system

The Club 6500C's low-impedance design safely draws more power from your car stereo to give your music extra punch, but you'll get even better results feeding them power from an outboard amp.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Had them professionally installed by my Specialty Shop today (1/3/2019). I generally do my automotive upgrades at years end as I purchase parts during the course of the year. I purchased the JBL Club 6500C back in November of 2017 on sale. I've always preferred Components as they deliver the most authentic and accurate sound. Had them installed in the Rear Door Cards to mate them with the JBL Bass Pro SL that was installed in November 2016 under the front passenger seat. Boy, I couldn't have hoped for more. ABSOLUTELY SPECTACULAR SOUND! I know they need to go through a "break-in" period of about 6 to 8 hours of play time. Can't wait to hear what they sound like then.

Pros: Everything -- Smooth, precise, attention to detail

2018 Honda Accord EX-L
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Upgraded factory speakers in a Honda Accord EX-L. Night and day difference in terms of detail, smoothness, musicality. The stock speakers are useless. These speakers have a low ohm load, so work well with the factory head unit. I did not realize that changing the factory speakers and sub but keeping the factory head unit would make such a night and day difference in the sound and my enjoyment of the car. Thank you Crutchfield! Thank you Troy!

Pros: Low ohm load, works well with factory head unit. Musical, detailed, smooth.

Cons: Bass does not extend too low, but that what the sub is for. Had to get creative to get tweeters to fit in the factory tweeter locations.

Great tweeter, sub par midrange

Brad from Montgomery, TX on 10/15/2018

2010 Toyota RAV4
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the first two weeks I felt the midbass was lacking and couldn't handle bass very well. A tech there told me that they need time to break in. 45 days later there is improvement but they still suck and aren't worth the money. Vocals and instruments are clear, but they just can't handle bass at all, nor do they produce bass compared to say, factory speakers in Hyundai cars. They come off sounding hollow cus the lower midbass range isn't there. That crucial 70-120 ha range is severely lacking. I listened to my new speakers compared to oem speakers in a Hyundai and I was very disappointed with the Jbls. They don't hit like quality midbasses and can't go low either (they struggle with mainstream music like Keisha and others). Oem Hyundai speakers absolutely destroy these and they are only $90 a pair. I'd give 2 stars for midbass and 4 stars for the tweeter.

Pros: Magical tweeter, tiny crossover, fitment,

Cons: Weak, mediocre midbass, woofer pops a lot even after being broken in for 45 days at reasonable volume. Lees bass and impact than factory crappy speakers

Picked these primarily because of low ohm and high db numbers.I am using factory amp,2015 Mazda 3 sport, also had to consider size of crossover, space in door is tight. Drilled 11/4 holes in tops of doorpanels-filed out for a nice snug fit using the flush mounts. Crossovers fit under door pulls, used hushmat11264 kit.Sound is awesome, huge upgrade. Very clear, great seperation.

Pros: Crutchfield supplied speaker brackets and wire harness made that part of install easy

Cons: need more power for even better bass

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Huge improvement over my stock 99 Chevy speakers. Easy to install though I did need to drill new holes. The speakers came with a roll of foam to help seat the speakers to plastic/metal. Used stock wiring and still get great sound quality. No issues with old pioneer aftermarket stereo though I will be upgrading.

Pros:

Cons:

Good OEM replacement (3 ohms - compatible with OEM amp)

TC from Westborough, MA on 6/19/2018

2017 Hyundai Sonata Limited
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Chose these because I wanted to stick with OEM amp (so needed lower ohm rating to match the OEM Infinity speakers) but wanted cleaner bass than the OEM Infinity mid range speakers in the Hyundai Sonata front doors. These speakers accomplished both goals... they operate at a lower ohm rating so I didn't lose too much volume from the OEM amp, and I got much cleaner/deeper (and louder?) bass than the OEMs. I didn't use the supplied tweeters or the supplied crossover - only used the woofers as a drop-in OEM replacement (Sonata only sends mid range signal to the front door speakers). Install was easy (10 minutes!) with Crutchfield adapter, wiring harness, and instructions.

Pros: - Much cleaner bass than OEM Infinity door speakers - Ohm draw is close to OEM speakers (2.6 ohms for JBL vs 2.1 ohm for OEM Infinity)

Cons: - Magnets were smaller than OEM speakers... hmnnn. Sound better though. - Wished they would only sell the woofers (OEM speakers were only midrange)

Straight forward install with no issues. The tweeter are bight but no over powering, the woofer supply an ample about on mid bass. The frequency range, I have the HPC set to 60 hertz, worked well with 12" I also installed. The 3 ohm rating make the amp work just that little more for extra power.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall these new speakers sound much better -- admittedly it was a low bar since the old speakers were 18 years old. With some tweaks to the stereo's custom EQ, I can dial-in the perfect sound. There wasn't as much bass as I hoped (thus the 4 star rating), which may be function of the size, location and amplifier characteristics.

Pros: clean, flat response over 50 - 15 kHz range

Cons: sealing tape/weatherstrip is too thin; adapter could be designed better

Hooked it up to a factory radio. Picked component because high end factory radio already split treble and bass into separate leads. Factory radios lack the wattage to produce strong bass from these speakers. However the original speakers were dry rotted and keeping them were not an option. Evan with a low wattage original receiver, these are still amply loud. Accuracy is high, beyond the originals before they cracked and well beyond them after 10 years of service. Love being able to pick my own location for the tweeter, even if it meant drilling into plastic trim. Being able to aim the tweeters increased the sound quality. For most manufacturers, speaker placement is an afterthought.

Insane sound. I have a 2002 TT project car that came with a Sony Xplod Head Unit, hooked up to the bose factory system. The sound was good, I am not going to lie, but the XPOLD head unit was so unuser friendly the I literally wanted to Explod every time I drove the car. So I decided if I was going to get a new HU I wanted new speakers. This is where the 6500's come in. I had a reputable shop disconnect all of the bose system, install a Alpine head unit with only the JBL's hooked up. These speakers....two speakers, and two tweets, BLOW the bose system out of the water. Super clean with no distortion. I cannot wait until they actually break in. Also I want to add that yes a sub, and a amp would greatly improve what I am hearing, BUT these speakers right out of the box produce amazing bass and really solid high's. The mids are where these speakers shine. Great all around speakers.

Pros: Super clean, solid bass, really big highs!, amazing MIDS!

2006 Honda Civic EX
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed a set of these separates in my wife's Honda Civic (2006 4 door sedan). These up front, and the coaxial equivalents in the rear deck. The tweeters are tiny in comparison with the stock tweeters, but JBL includes a multitude of adapters to get an approximate size. I used silicon adhesive to mount them in the stock location. Crossovers go in the front doors, then the woofers. Wiring was a pain but I blame Honda, not JBL. The push connectors are tight, but secure. After a few weeks of break-in, they really push the bass a lot lower than stock, and the highs remain bright and clear, at much louder volumes than the stock paper-coned speakers. For 6.5" speakers I'm pleased with the sound.

After a month after install, I feel it's time to place a review. Crisp highs and punchy lows. Without a doubt much better than stock speakers and better than some aftermarket speakers. Bass at neutral was just ok, but after adjusting and increasing, it became punchy. The tweeters are small at first inspection but they can produce surprisingly strong high pitch music. One week after, I installed an amplifier and the speakers performed even better. Overall a very good component and would recommend to anyone.

Pros: Crispy highs and punchy lows. You get what you pay for. Money well spent

Sound is really impressive for a speaker at this price point. JBL quality is apparent throughout but I was just a little disappointed that the crossovers are fixed with no frequency or gain adjustment but the sound more than makes up for it. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound quality of these speakers is amazing. Everything is crystal clear. The tweeters are a bit overpowering but this can be compensated for with the radio's equalizer. Bass is very tight although not much is there, which seems to be normal for this size speaker. Despite 3 or 4 different types of mounting hardware included with the tweeters, none of them worked in my sail panels so I had to get a bit creative. This was expected and not a problem for me. If you don't mind drilling holes in your interior, flush mounting these tweeters would look very good. In all, I and am very happy with the results. I wonder how Polk Audio DB6502's or JBL Stage 600C (and very similar specs to these) would compare. I ended up going for these because of my adviser's recommendation, and because I cheaped out on the rear speakers and wasn't impressed. Going back I would definitely buy them again.

Pros: Amazing sound, look good

Cons: Price, mounting hardware

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put these speakers into the front doors of a 2002 Crew Cab Silverado with a newly-rebuilt stock headunit. The stock speaker system includes a tweeter and a woofer in each front door with a separate wiring harnesses for the tweeter and one for the woofer. That means the crossover is already built into the stock system. My old woofers were shot - the foam outer rim was completely disintegrated and I was glad to get rid of them. The new woofers are great and were easy to install by drilling a few small holes. The wiring adapters Crutchfield sends made the wiring part very easy. However, there was nothing wrong with the stock tweeters and the stock crossovers. The crossovers are not actually visible in the door and may actually be inside the headunit, (I'm not sure). That means I really didn't need the crossovers nor the tweeters that came with this speaker set. I would have preferred it if the advisors at Crutchfield had directed me to replacement woofers only for the front doors because, as I told them, I was trying to stay "stock' as much as possible. The system sounds great now and I am glad. But I do have the two tweeters and the two crossovers left over. I paid for them but didn't really need them.

Pros: Good sound. Love the wiring adapters Crutchfield supplies.

Cons: I didn't need the tweeters and the crossovers.

These speakers replaced stock JBL speakers in my Tacoma. I was very surprised when I pulled the stock speakers from the door. The woofers were the size of a tweeter. These speakers give a much fuller sound, and elimate the tinny sound and distortion that were proplems in the stock set up.

Pros: Big improvement.

Cons: Still had to replace the sub, which was expensive.

The speakers are not very good, definitely not any better than stock, they are way worse than my stock bose speakers in my 2003 Chevy Duramax. I would not recommend. And if you think you are going to need the directions for installation, you have a choice of 32 different languages, but only a half page on installing directions. I am a low voltage technician so it wasn't hard to figure out, but didn't make it easy either. I am very disappointed with this product. I was a fan of JBL until now.

Pros:

Cons: Sound quality and bass is terrible, even at lower volumes

I have these installed in my '06 Subaru Forester and WOW!!! what a difference. I e-mailed Rocky with a tough list of music (Sinatra to Metallica, Tedeschi Trucks to Colt Ford, Del McCroury to En Vouge) and a short speaker list (not much fits a Subaru's small doors). He recommended the JBL Club series over the Polk and Kicker and with the Black Friday sale price I ordered up a set. The woofers dropped in with only the need to redrill mounting holes and JBL supplies 3 different mounting options for the tweeters (surface, flush and under-mount). I flush-mounted them ahead of the door handle trim, mounting the supplied crossover in the door in a cavity behind the arm rest. I have received several compliments on the fact that they look factory installed and the black color matches other pieces of the interior trim perfectly. They sound a bit "thin" on the bottom end, possibly due to the recommended XTC speaker baffles, but are very spacious and clear from 150Hz or so on up. The detail reproduced is astonishing, especially since all 4 factory speakers weigh less than 1 of the JBL's. You can hear the musicians moving in metal folding chairs in the intro to Sinatra's "It Was a Very Good Year". They haven't distorted at almost max volume when driven by the 26W rms of the head unit and sound better after 2 months of use, very smooth with no standout frequencies. Just add a sub (I used a Kicker 11HS8) to fill out the bottom frequencies and "turn it up to 11!!".

Pros: Very spacious open sound, several tweeter mounting options, very efficient with a low power input, very good quality

Cons: A little "thin" on low end response

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in 2005 Highlander, GREAT improvement in mid and high range assisted by my new Kenwood DPX792 radio. Installment went smoothly, for my model Highlander the tweeter attached easily to existing bracket with one of the supplied adapters. Hardware supplied with woofer would not work for my vehicle but I could easily use original screws/holes with the supplied adapter along with some creativity for a solid mount. I zip tied the crossover to a secured wire harness just above the woofer. Speakers are a very nice value for the incredible sound improvement over my stock speakers.

Pros: Quality components

Cons: None for me, just understand the instructions and take your time.

These are a major improvement over stock speakers. Install was a snap; excellent instructions from Crutchfield as usual. Tweeters were easily installed with some minor surgery to the stock bracket. Overall very happy with the quality/sound, price and Crutchfield customer service!

Pros: Build Quality, sound, easy installation with Crutchfield harnesses and adapters

Cons: None for me, but some may find the installation of tweeters challenging.

Great sounding speakers! Clean and clear with very good midrange bass. Voices jump out of the movies and music.

Pros: Perfect sounding pair. Great clean highs with no distortion like you hear with other tweeters. The midbass is super tight and voices jump out of the movies and music.

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are very good sounding speakers. One reason I picked these were their sensitivity which allowed me to use them with the factory stereo with it's lower power amp. These do not put out a great deal of bass due to their size, but they are not distressed when the bass level is increased. They are a definite improvement over the factory speakers.

Pros: Great sound and construction. Multiple housings for mounting both the woofer and the tweeter.

Cons: Not sure if this is the norm now, but no speaker wire is included with speakers.

Features

Plus One+ Woofer Cones: Each speaker uses a larger cone than other speakers of the same size. This is accomplished by using a unique basket design and hi-roll surround. The Plus One+ design offers greater bass output and an increase in efficiency.

High-Output Design: The 3Ω voice coil design compensates for the high in-line resistance of small gauge factory wiring, extracting more power from factory (or aftermarket) receivers. This results in clearer, richer sound for the listener.

Tweeter Mounting: The I-Mount tweeter mounting system and Starfish mounting brackets give you several different ways to mount the tweeters:

  • I-Mount: The tweeters can be surface-mounted or flush-mounted with JBL's innovative I-Mount system:
    • Surface Mount: Surface mounting the tweeters involves screwing the surface-mount cup to the mounting location, then inserting and locking the tweeter into the cup.
    • Flush Mount: Flush mounting uses the threaded flush-mount housing and plastic locking nut. Once a cutout is made, the tweeter is installed in the flush-mount adapter, then into the flush mount housing and inserted into the hole. The large plastic locking nut is threaded onto the adapter (from behind the mounting surface) to hold the complete assembly securely in place. When flush mounted, the tweeters may be angled for optimum response and imaging.
  • Starfish Mounting Brackets: The Starfish mounting brackets allow the tweeters to be installed in factory locations behind the existing grilles:
    • Bottom Mount: Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is secured to the underside of the grille panel. The tweeter must be inserted into the bracket and locked into place before the bracket is mounted.
    • Surface Mount: Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is screwed to the top of the mounting surface behind the grille panel. Then, the tweeter is inserted into the bracket and locked into place.
    • Flush Mount: There are two sets of tabs to flush mount the tweeter in the Starfish bracket, yielding different mounting dimensions. The upper tabs mount the tweeter completely below the opening and are glued in place. The lower mounting tabs are screwed in place and result in a mounting height just under 3/8". Once the bracket is mounted, the tweeter is inserted into the bracket and locked into place.

JBL's Club series car speakers are a great sonic upgrade for your car or truck that won't break the bank. They sound great and fit most vehicles.

Definitely an Improvement

Written by Tara, Sales Advisor, on 11/4/2016 8:55:00 AM

After having these JBL Clubs for about two weeks I can't imagine ever having gone without them. The clarity and distinct separation I get with these speakers certainly blows my old factory speakers out of the water.

I've had an aftermarket receiver for several years now and installing that definitely made a difference. However, the factory speakers always sounded muddy and I knew it was time for a change. Since I wanted to keep the upgrade as simple as possible, the JBL's were a no brainier given the low impedance. I can get plenty of power without needing an amp, score!

The biggest shock has to be the frequency range I'm getting out of these suckers. The bass is really clear and quite significant. Even more astounding is the crystal-clear highs I'm getting from the tweeters. It is as if the high hat never existed before now.

Overall, I'm very pleased with these speakers. My old standard songs have gotten a much needed facelift and I couldn't be happier.
