About the JBL Club 704

Space-age power

Although this futuristic JBL looks like it belongs in the cockpit of a stealth bomber, the Club 704 4-channel amplifier will actually deliver 70 watts RMS to each of the front and rear speakers in your car. You can also bridge the amp to 2-channel mode to drive a couple subs with 200 watts RMS. You'll always have a spot in your system for this versatile powerhouse.

Specialized high-tech integration features

And speaking of the future, this amp features an ADAS input, which lets you keep your advanced driver assistance system's (ADAS) warning messages after you've replaced the factory receiver or amplifier. You can select which channel plays your messages, so you'll hear lane departure or blind spot warnings, for example, through your system loud and clear. And if your vehicle comes equipped with a Harman HALOsonic noise cancellation/enhancement system, you can plug it right into the Club 704 and enjoy a super quiet (or an engine-roaring) ride along with your music.

Works in almost any vehicle

Speaker-level inputs allow this amplifier to integrate into almost any system, even one using your car's factory radio. Separate high- and low-pass filters on the front and rear channels tune the sound to perfectly fit your speakers or subs.

Works well to improve sound quality, not a super loud playing amp but brings out more detail in the music.

Showtime

Thanks Crutchfield! This amplifier so far is holding its own. I have it pushing some Infinity reference speakers in my 2010 prius, and the doors are rattling. But, that's due to the cheaply made doors. I can put my hands on the outer panel and push in and it stops. The gain is set lower than the actual set limit, especially the rear. It really is above what I expected to be.

Pros: Steady performance, fits under a seat, hasn't gotten hot.

Cons: A little too big to hide. Looks like a subwoofer amp from back in the day.

JBL didn't disappoint

Sean from Crestview, FL on 12/2/2018

For the price you cannot beat this amp. Lots of power, sounds great, and the install was cake. If I could make one suggestion... the 'line level' inputs are just RCAs that your speaker wires mate to and a switch on the amp. In theory it's great, but the screws that hold the wires in the RCAs are INCREDIBLY small, and the rca's were really loose on the amp input. I suggest that if you use the supplied adapters have a magnet handy...

Pros: Loud, lots of options for tuning great cost to quality ratio

Cons: Line level rca adapters are a joke. Really who thought that was a good idea? They don't even fit the amp...

Nice value amp

Randy D from Huntington, IN on 9/3/2018

I purchased this amp to increase the power from my stock radio to my after market speakers which it did. Crutchfield had it on sale so I got a great deal on it. For the amount of power that it puts out it seems to be a little large but all in all it does exactly what I want it to do at a great price.

Pros: Does what I bought it for at a great value.

Cons: It's a little larger than what I would like but that is the only thing that I don't like about it.

Consistent Power

Crutchfield customer from Knoxville, TN on 8/21/2018

I've only had my new system installed for a couple of weeks, but so far, this amp delivers consistent power to the new JBL components in the front & Memphis Audio 6x9 in the rear deck. Still working out the best 6x9 options for my vehicle as the JBL Club 9630 6x9 speakers I originally purchased did not fit my rear deck as stated on website. Happy customer with this amp & well worth the upgrade in quality sound!

Pros: Provides Plenty of clean power & has a clean/sleek appearance.

Cons: Adjustment knobs on amp could have a brighter color on the knobs in order to see adjustments made on the amp without a magnifying glass.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The JBL Club-704 is part of the Club series of car audio amplifiers. This Class D 4-channel amplifier will accept both high-level and low-level inputs. Class D amplifiers are highly efficient and compact, generating lots of power without drawing much current or generating heat. The unit comes with spare fuses, speaker wire-to-RCA adapters, and mounting hardware.

Power Output: The Club-704 delivers the following power output:

  • 70 watts RMS x 4 at 4 ohms (<1.0% THD+N)
  • 100 watts RMS x 4 at 2 ohms (<1.0% THD+N)
  • 200 watts RMS x 2 at 4 ohms bridged (<1.0% THD+N)
  • 1000 watts x 1 peak

HALOsonic Compatible: JBL Club full range amplifiers are compatible with the Harman HALOsonic noise management system found in select vehicles. HALOsonic utilizes a combination of Active Noise Cancellation and Electronic Sound Synthesis to greatly reduce engine noise and road noise in the cabin, making for a much quieter ride. The amp features a 3.5mm connection to interface with the HALOsonic system.

ADAS: The Club-704 has an RJ45 port for the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) that can override the audio source input to deliver a message or other audio from a connected ADAS accessory. On the amplifier, you can designate which speaker the ADAS signal is output: Front left, front right, rear left, or rear right.

Protection Circuitry: The amplifier features protection circuitry for thermal overload, over- or under-voltage (<9V or >16V), and short circuits. The LED on the top of the amp glows red if the amp goes into protection mode.

Controls: The Club-704's controls are located on one side of the amplifier. The rotary controls require a small screwdriver (not included) to make adjustments. The amp controls include:

  • Gain: The rotary gain controls let you match the amp's input sensitivity to the output of the source unit. There are separate gain controls for the front and rear channels.
  • Input Level: The Input Level switch lets you select the type of input you are using. For high-level input, there are two settings: Hi1 and Hi2. If the audio system fails to play with an amplifier connected to its output, or you get a "speaker disconnected" message on your factory stereo, set the switch to the Hi2 position. The Hi2 position includes a circuit design to fool this type of factory system into "seeing" a speaker connected to its output.
  • Crossover: The amp features switchable crossovers that can be set to low pass (LPF), high pass (HPF), or Full Range. You can adjust the cutoff frequency of the crossover from 32Hz to 320Hz using the rotary control. There are separate crossovers for the front and rear channels.

Connections: The JBL Club-704 uses set screw terminals for the +12V power, ground, turn-on (remote) lead, and speaker outputs. The screws can be tightened/loosened with a Phillips-head or flat-head screwdriver (not provided). The amp connections include:

  • Power/Ground: The +12V Power and Ground terminals will accept up to 4-gauge wire. It is recommended that you use a minimum of 8 AWG power wire to the battery, with an in-line 60A fuse installed no more than 18" from the battery terminal. An 8 AWG ground wire (minimum) is also recommended, and attached to a metal area close to the amplifier.
  • Remote Turn-On: The Remote terminal will accept up to 8 AWG wire. Typically, an 18 AWG turn-on lead is included in an amplifier wiring kit.
  • Speaker Outputs: The amp features screw terminals for connecting four speakers. There are markings on the terminals for bridging the amplifier.
  • Speaker-Level Input: The amp includes four bare wire-to-RCA adapters for connecting the amp to a factory radio or aftermarket head unit without preamp outputs. You should attach each speaker wire from the head unit to an adapter and plug the adapter's RCA plug into the amp.
  • Line-Level Inputs: The amplifier is equipped with two pairs of RCA inputs for connecting stereo RCA patch cables from the head unit to the amp.
  • Pre-Out: A third pair of RCA jacks is provided to output the audio signal to a second amplifier, if desired.

Customer Q&A

Q
Crutchfield asked: Why did you buy this?
A
I chose this amp because there isn't that many with pre amp outputs. On a personal preference i think a sub amp sounds a lot better though the pre amp output than through the stereo. On its performance i am not sure but from the spec sheet it should sound very good. [ ROBERT  May 06, 2019 ]
