About the JBL GTR-104

Power delivered in style

JBL's GTR-104 4-channel car amplifier can deliver 100 watts RMS per channel to your front and rear speakers — serious power from a compact chassis that exudes style. Even better, you can stream music directly from a Bluetooth device to this amp, while its built-in processing restores the excitement in your music that data compression removes.

Connectivity

You can stream music from a Bluetooth device directly to this amp for convenient, wireless play that bypasses your car's radio. You can connect the amp's preamp outputs to a subwoofer amp, like the matching JBL GTR-601 or GTR-1001, so your music will have plenty of low-end punch. The Party Mode feature allows up to three different sources to stream, so more people can join in the fun.

Restores the excitement in your music

Downloaded digital music and streaming services apply data compression to their files so you can store more songs on your devices, but compressed music sounds noticeably duller than uncompressed files. Harman's Clari-Fi™ sound restoration technology improves the sound quality of your digital music by analyzing the data and then reconstructing the parts that were removed during the compression process. You get crisper highs, increased dynamics, clearer vocals, and fuller music. The included wired remote gives you handy controls for Bluetooth streaming, hands-free calling, Party Mode, and Clari-Fi signal processing.

Versatile

Need some bass power? You can switch the GTR-104 into bridged mode and drive two subwoofers with 240 watts RMS each. The variable high- or low-pass filter optimizes the amp's output to your speakers, increasing the efficiency of the system. The GTR-104 can accept low- or speaker-level inputs so it'll work in almost any system, and JBL includes RCA-to-speaker wire adapters for your convenience.

Love this amp

Jun from Barrigada, GU on 9/9/2019

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Tons of power and with a small footprint you can hide this under your seat or in the back of the seat. Atleast a 100 watts rms, jbl amps are a little under rated. The sound quality is amazing and makes my jbl club 6.5 speakers sound great. Fits my 4 gauge wires perfectly for a clean install. The only thing I dont like is how the remote wire has an adapter that you have to insert into the amp. Not using the bluetooth extension so not going to review that part. The gain was set with a smd dd1 but you dont need it since it lowers the output if it senses clipping.

Pros: Tons of power Small footprint Bluetooth connection Sleek design

Cons: Remote wire goes into a plastic adapter which then plugs into the amp

For what I wanted out of this amp, it's perfect. I'm now running audio from my phone into the system while bypassing the factory head unit all together. I didn't want to replace my factory head unit as the car is a collectors item now (mk4 supra).

Pros: Bluetooth capability to have a stealthy audio system.

Good compact powerful amp. Fits well under my seat. Have it pushing 4 kicker ks speakers and really brought them to life. The bluetooth feature is pretty cool and works well.

Pros: Compact. Delivers good steady power. Bluetooth and party mode is great as well as its clari-fi

Cons: Cord for control panel is super long. Dont care for how wires connect but ferrules will help give sturdy connections. Wish crossover was not so basic.

Decent Amp On A Budget

Brian from Thorntown, IN on 5/31/2019

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I gave this amp four stars, but I think it's really 3.5. It's a decent amp. It definitely gets you loud music if that's what you are going for, plus the price is great for an amp that delivers 100w per channel. It's a pretty compact amp too, fits easily under the front seats of most cars. Now the negative. I hear a lot of noise when I turn the volume up. I have Hertz and Focal speakers, so I believe the noise is coming from the amp. Also, the gain and filter knobs don't really tell you where you're at, so it's hard to match the front and back. All in all I would recommend this amp to someone who wants power on a budget. If you have the means, I would tell you to shell out some cash for a JL Audio or something comparable.

Pros: Solid Power Compact design Easy to wire Dependable

Cons: Lot of noise in at high volume Adjustment dials aren't labeled so you don't know what the exact setting is

Have yet to install. Installer wasn't wowed by it and said he tends to recommend Rockford. It has a lot of features and seems to be decently priced for the money. I'll probably still install it within the next month or two just to see how it is. Lot of features, but not sure what's gimmicky and what's a legitimately important feature. Heard the ClariFi isn't that noticeable.

Great amplifier that does what it needs to do. I have mine hooked up with with 4 ohm speakers for the doors. And a 12 alpine 4 ohm sub. Does all that with out any issue and it loud. I particularly love the Bluetooth feature and while I have it wired to the factory radio i rarely use the radio any more. By having it wired to the radio I get the door chimes still which is good.

LOUD

Andy from Glenside, PA on 1/9/2019

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

So I don't usually leave reviews on purchases. With that being said, I was recommended to buy this amp when asking about a set of kicker speakers that I was looking at it. At first I was hesitant, and figured to just try the new speakers alone first to see how they are. And they were good. But you know what, the potential was there to have more power. The factory head unit was only powering them. So I figured, if I'm getting new speakers I might as well use them how they were meant to be. I purchased this amp, a wiring kit, an Lc7i, for wiring purposes as I did not wanna replace the head unit, and had everything professionally installed at a shop, and was told "Congratulations, you now have a loud car" when they were done, haha. Anyway, when I turned on my head unit, and started listening to the music, it opened up a whole new dimension of listening. I was blown away. It is very loud, which was my end goal, yet also still keeps the quality. No regrets purchasing it, at all.

Pros: Awesome volume, great sound.

Nice compact amplifier, supplies good power and requires very little space. I would give it 5 stars but the remote turn on plug in adapter is stupid! I have no clue why it doesn't have a simple screw down terminal like every other amplifier out there. It confused me at first because the plug in adapter has microscopic screws and can only take the thinnest wire available, other than that it is a quality JBL amplifier

Pros: Good power, good price and small size

Cons: The remote turn on is just plain stupid

4/5 because it's nearly perfect. Not quite enough power for the Alpine Type R component set and Type R coaxials I'm using it to power, but it definitely gets the job done. Loud and crystal clear. Easy installation. I'd recommend if you want loud, but not stadium concert loud.

Pros: Clear sound, affordable.

Cons: Doesn't really live up to its "stadium power" title, but that's being nitpicky.

I purchased this Amplifier due to it Bluetooth capability and its small size for installing in my Alfa vintage car. The amplifier looks as high quality product, the sound is good. However it failed shortly to meet my requirements for Bluetooth use. There is not option to adjust the gain while using Bluetooth mode. ( the gain control that on the amp do nothing while using Bluetooth mode). Since this is 4 channel amplifier you cannot set the balance between front to rear speakers or it become even worst if you use the rear output for running sub-woofer. This is not acceptable and it is not mention in the product manual. For it sound and build quality I give it 5 star , For the 4 channels Bluetooth device I give it only one star.IT IS NOT USABLE FOR BLUETOOTH USE.

Flexible platform with built-in Bluetooth

Jesse from Ashland, OR on 1/25/2018

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Overall good product, but not without flaws. The sound quality and power are good. Very nice compact footprint. I am only using Bluetooth as a a source and connectivity is simple. Bluetooth sound quality and range are good but there is no gain control between front and rear channels to balance levels when using this input. If you are using RCA inputs there is no selectable channel switch so if you want 4 channels from a 2 channel source you must have splitters. Problems can be worked around. Cleaner install than using an external Bluetooth receiver.

Pros: Compact footprint Power and Sound Built in Bluetooth

Cons: No gain control with Bluetooth source No RCA input selector for 2 or 4 channel source Inadequate documentation

Great Amplifier, Controller Iffy

Darryl from Colorado Spgs, CO on 1/15/2018

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I'm using this to power my four door speakers only, and it does a great job of this. It's an easy connection (the RCA adapters are provided for use), and as easy an installation as any amplifier is. The controller allows you to stream music directly to your speakers through the amplifier, which is great in theory. However, only the speakers that are hooked up via this amplifier will play back your music. If you have a subwoofer that uses the pre-outs, it will not receive the signal. Further, since this is directly through the amplifier, the volume will be controlled via your phone, cutting your head unit completely out of the process. The Clari-Fi feature, I found, does very little for the signal clarity. The sound seemed to be of the same clarity as beforehand. If you want to use the controller, I urge you to plug it in and simply set the controller somewhere accessible for a day to play with it. Mounting without trying out the features may prove to be fruitless for you. Overall, the amplifier is great! Just try out the controller before mounting it!

Was hesitant to purchase this for my jbl 670gti due to the very small size of this amp but finally made up my mind to try it. Man this thing has some serious power when it's bridged. Pushed it for a long time and wasn't even warm. Using an alpine ine-s920hd headunit, jl rca cables. (Best ones they sell) and Crutchfield 10 gauge speaker wire. Could only get my volume to 32/35 at 80 hertz to sound clean. Anything past that will probably hurt my speakers. Hope this helps. Oh and this replaced my alpine mrv-f545. The alpine was a little warmer but couldn't push the jbls as they should be properly pushed. Very happy

Pros: So many features makes this amp very reasonable and hard to beat.

JBL GTR-104 CLARIFY review

David from Crosby, TX on 11/13/2016

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Plenty of power to drive my Focal separates and Co-Ax's. Nice, smooth sound and reasonable punch, just what one would expect from a JBL amp. My thoughts on the Clarify feature are mixed. It definitely makes a difference when switched on and off. It is difficult to determine whether or not it actually decompresses the compressed music on my IPOD or whether it's just a good equalizer. It certainly pumps up the highs and boosts the bass some, and the voice sounds markedly better. They claim that the Clarify feature does not alter the sound of non-compressed music sources, such as a compact disc. In extensive listening with numerous compact discs while turning the Clarify on and off it does make a significant difference. This is not subjective, as in I "think" it made a difference, there is no doubt. I found this troubling as it is not supposed to alter the sound of music that has not been compressed. It seems to have about the same effect on the CD as the IPOD. I don't care for it messing about with a signal that doesn't need it, so I just turn off that feature when listening to CD's. Overall I'd give it high marks.

Pros: Clarify works, mostly for the better.

Cons: They claim that it has no affect on non-compressed music sources, but it does.

That same legendary sound quality you would expect from a JBL amp. Had more than enough power to power up my mids. I didn't use the supplied control module for bluetooth pairing. Frankly in my case it was not necessary as I had a head unit that does everything. But it can be beneficial for some.

Pros: Power Sound Quality Stand alone amp that doesn't require a head unit

Cons: I wish it had the switch to share input signal between front and rear inputs.

The GTR-104 includes Clari-Fi, an audio restoration feature that improves the sound of compressed digital files. The amp also includes a cabin-mounted control panel to give you amplifier control at your fingertips. The unit comes with spare fuses, speaker wire-to-RCA adapters, and mounting hardware.

Power Output: The GTR-104 delivers the following power output:

  • 100 watts RMS x 4 at 4 ohms (<0.1% THD+N)
  • 120 watts RMS x 4 at 2 ohms (<0.1% THD+N)
  • 240 watts RMS x 2 at 4 ohms bridged (<0.3% THD+N)

Clari-Fi: Clari-Fi is a proprietary technology that analyzes compressed digital music files and improves them in real time. Using a predictive algorithm that restores audio content that is lost during the compression process. Clari-Fi provides extra bandwidth, especially in the high frequencies, widens the sound stage, and gives vocals a natural warmth not found in compressed files.

Control Panel: The amplifier comes with a wired control panel that provides numerous features not typically found with amplifiers. It has Bluetooth technology, and an omni-directional microphone for accepting and ending phone calls from your cell phone. Party Mode lets you pair multiple Bluetooth devices for streaming music from anyone's phone. The control panel also lets you activate the Clari-Fi feature. The panel is 4-7/16"W x 15/16"H, and has a 19.5-foot cable. It can be flush- or surface-mounted with the supplied brackets.

ADAS: The GTR-104 has an interface for the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) that can override the audio source input to deliver a message or other audio from a connected ADAS accessory. On the amplifier, you can designate which speaker the ADAS signal is output: Front left, front right, rear left, or rear right.

Protection Circuitry: The amplifier features protection circuitry for thermal overload, over- or under-voltage (<9V or >16V), and short circuits. The LED on the top of the amp glows red if the amp goes into protection mode.

Controls: The GTR-104's controls are located on one side of the amplifier. The rotary controls require a small screwdriver (not included) to make adjustments. The amp controls include:

  • Gain: The rotary gain controls let you match the amp's input sensitivity to the output of the source unit. The input sensitivity range of the amplifier is 0.2V and up for a low-level input, and up to 20V for speaker-level input. There are separate gain controls for the front and rear channels.
  • Input Level: The Input Level switch lets you select the type of input you are using. For high-level input, there are two settings: Hi1 and Hi2. If the audio system fails to play with an amplifier connected to its output, or you get a "speaker disconnected" message on your factory stereo, set the switch to the Hi2 position. The Hi2 position includes a circuit design to fool this type of factory system into "seeing" a speaker connected to its output.
  • Crossover: The amp features switchable crossovers that can be set to low pass (LPF), high pass (HPF), or Full Range. You can adjust the cutoff frequency of the crossover from 32Hz to 320Hz using the rotary control. There are separate crossovers for the front and rear channels.

Connections: The JBL GTR-104 uses set screw terminals for the +12V power, ground, and speaker outputs. The screws can be tightened/loosened with a Phillips-head or flat-head screwdriver (not provided). The amp connections include:

  • Power/Ground: The +12V Power and Ground terminals will accept up to 4-gauge wire. It is recommended that you use 4 AWG power wire to the battery, with an in-line 60A fuse (or higher) installed no more than 18" from the battery terminal. A 4 AWG ground wire (minimum) is also recommended, and attached to a metal area close to the amplifier.
  • Remote Turn-On: The Remote turn on wire connects to the supplied plastic 2-pin Euro or Phoenix connector. The connector has tiny set screws to tighten the wire, and requires a precision screwdriver (2.4mm or 3/32"). The connector has "IN" and "OUT" terminals, allowing you to daisy chain the turn-on signal to another amplifier, if needed.
  • Speaker Outputs: The amp features screw terminals for connecting four speakers. There are markings on the terminals for bridging the amplifier.
  • Speaker-Level Input: The amp includes four bare wire-to-RCA adapters for connecting the amp to a factory radio or aftermarket head unit without preamp outputs. You should attach each speaker wire from the head unit to an adapter and plug the adapter's RCA plug into the amp.
  • Line-Level Inputs: The amplifier is equipped with two pairs of RCA inputs for connecting stereo RCA patch cables from the head unit to the amp.
  • Pre-Out: A third pair of RCA jacks is provided to output the audio signal to a second amplifier, if desired.

Clari-fi works with ant input, so if you plug the amp into your radio and play a CD or something it is supposed to work on that. Clari-fi will work with Bluetooth, but it probably won't do much since music is already coming from a digital source. Clari-fi is supposed to be used when the input is a old CD or tape or something from your radio.
[ Bobby  Jan 07, 2019 ]
A
It should work when going through bluetooth and through RCA as well

Controlling the volume with your phone ..will that let it get loud enough for a motorcycle?? Using phone instead of head unit..thanks Steve

A
i am using this amp with no headunit in my car and the volume goes far past my expectations. i run the volume about 5 click from full and its extremely loud with my 100w rms rockford fosgate door speakers. im assuming its up to your speakers at this point. so yes, the amp pushes out what is promised. even while using a phone as the volume controller.
[ Kurt  May 27, 2018 ]
A
Yes, as long as you set the gain right it's really loud

Q
Can the amplifier be installed without using the included control panel if I do not care about using Bluetooth?
[ usernameX  May 22, 2018 ]

A
Yes you can. It plugs into the amp so you don't have to use it. I am not using the Bluetooth but still have it hooked up and the wire coiled up in the trunk so I can use it for the other features if needed.
[ DOUG  May 24, 2018 ]
A
Yes. The control panel is not needed for it to operate. Just install as you would any amp.
[ ADAM  May 23, 2018 ]
A
Yes, but you may need the panel to turn the Clari-Fi feature on and off.

[ Douglas  May 22, 2018 ]

You do not need the control panel to run the amp.
[ Bobby  May 22, 2018 ]
Q
How do I control balance, fader, bass, and trebel?
[ Nick  Jan 28, 2018 ]
2 answers
A
There are controls on the amplifier itself for gain, front and rear. There are also controls for the frequency cut off, front and rear. Once you have these set to your liking, everything else is controlled with your Bluetooth device. I used my Android cell phone and the controls are limited, but adequate.I am using this amplifier in a Miata and power the front doors and a small bazooka tube. It works just fine. Take your time adjusting the controls on the amplifier itself, kind of a pain, but worth the time.
[ paul  Feb 03, 2018 ]
A
You ordinarily control those functions with the audio controls built into your automobile's deck. Although you can control the "volume" of the subwoofer with the supplied auxiliary volume control that you can mount in a convenient location.
[ DAVID H  Feb 03, 2018 ]

Hello. I'm sorry I don't have that answer for you since I'm using everything through my head unit. But it does have an input that says "upgrade" on the amp itself so I'm sure jbl can help with that

Q
How does using the phone work? Where is the microphone located? Can I connect my ipad and my iphone simultaneously so I can answer calls from iphone but listen to music from ipad?
[ rocktor  Dec 09, 2017 ]
2 answers
A
The microphone is on the control module that connects to the amp. It has, I believe, a 19.5' cable, so you can put it pretty much anywhere. As to how it works.. it works great. Very clear coming through and I don't seem to need to speak up for people to hear me. The only issue I had is a couple days ago, no sound would come through for the call, even though I was connected. I disconnected and reconnected, and it works fine. There is a party mode so up to 3 sources can play music, but when party mode is active, you can't use the bluetooth for calls. My fix (and current setup): aux cord for music and bluetooth connected to my phone. I'm also playing music from my phone, but I like to have a more fine control over the volume - connecting to the amp via bluetooth essentially bypasses your head unit, so you can only control the volume with your input source device.
[ Erik  Dec 11, 2017 ]
A
The microphone is in the little wired remote box.
[ Nathan  Dec 11, 2017 ]
Q
Do I need a head unit for this amp if I just want to connect my phone via Bluetooth?
[ Patrick  Jul 24, 2017 ]

A
No head unit is needed, it connects directly to your Bluetooth device. My only complaint is that it takes a minute to boot up and connect
[ Brent  Jul 25, 2017 ]
A
No, you can use your phone with no head unit. Just installed in an old Jeep and it is awesome! Small controller to power it on and connect with Bluetooth. Use your phone to control volume.
[ DAVID N  Jul 25, 2017 ]
A
no, I have this in my 31 Ford and use it with my I-phone
[ Mary56  Jul 25, 2017 ]
A
No head unit needed. Just connect directly to amp.
[ Alexander  Jul 25, 2017 ]

I just installed this amp to my 2003 Ford Excursion and you can use it either with or without a head unit. I can Bluetooth from my phone right to the amp an I get great sound just from the amplifier.
[ JAMES  Jul 25, 2017 ]
Q
Do the pre outs work when the amp is direct on Bluetooth? Are they variable?
[ Rob  Jul 14, 2017 ]
1 answer
A
Yes, the RCA pre-amp outputs work for the input audio signal and Bluetooth. They are variable with the input signal level, yes. I hope that helps. My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Ryan

Q
Can you tune the amp if you are using the Bluetooth input?
[ Rusty  Apr 02, 2017 ]

You cannot make adjustments to the amp through Bluetooth, will need to manually do that on the amp itself.
[ DAVID N  Jul 25, 2017 ]

Q
What are the dimensions of the control panel? And what size opening does it fit into? Thanks!
[ North Guy  Feb 22, 2017 ]
1 answer
A
The faceplate dimensions are 1-7/8" H x 4-7/16" W. The opening size would be 1-1/4" H x 3-5/8" W. I did not get this from the owner's manual. I measured it myself. Also, I did not mount mine as I have it laying in a small slot in the console next to the seat, out of sight. Wasn't interested in cutting a hole in my dash.
