About the JBL GTX500

Bass it up

Got a nice sub? Give it some serious power by JBL. The GTX500 mono subwoofer amp will send up to 500 watts RMS to your sub, filling your car or truck with powerful bass. A low-pass crossover and bass boost allow you to dial in the best tone for your subwoofer, enclosure, and vehicle.

Bass it up

JBL GTX500 500W x 1 Car Amplifier

Clean bass is the name of the game with JBL's GTX500 mono amp.

Smart amp

The GTX500 turns itself on when it senses an incoming signal, so running a remote turn-on lead all the way from your car stereo isn't necessary. The amp also turns itself off about five minutes after the signal stops, so there's no danger of running your battery down. You can switch this feature off if you'd rather use a remote lead.

I would absolutely buy again

Tom from Denver, CO on 8/7/2018

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I bought this mono amp to wire up 2x10" older bazooka subs (before they sold tubes). I wired up the 4ohm subs to 2ohms to match the sub and I couldn't be happier about the turnout. I also bought a crutchfield wiring kit to finish off the build. The amp mounting was easy, 4 screws. Hookup was just as easy as everything is marked well. The best part of this amp is that you have a switch that enables the amp to turn on without a remote wire. A pair of RCA plugs from the radio to this amp is all that's needed to turn the amp on and enjoy the bass. (so thankful I added the RCA cables a couple months back when replacing the radio). Just remember to enable this feature before mounting as the switch is on the underside of the amp.

Pros: Easy install. Auto on feature when connected to radio via RCA plugs. Amp easily accepted 8 gauge wiring. Will fit under most seats (unless it's a compact).

Cons: Auto on toggle is on the underside of the amp which is only an issue if you mount the amp without turning it on (oops).

Got this on closeout and not sure why. Amp performs great and exceeds expectations by far. And can't say enough good about Crutchfields customer service and lengths they will go to to make sure that you have everything needed to make your installation of anything go smoothly. Have been dealing with them for years and will continue to do so.

This amp is awesome, and works great. Other then that, easy adjustment settings, and small enough for under my seat snugly of my 2010 GMC Sierra extended cab.

Pros: Small little size when you are tough on room. Easy adjustment settings.

Cons: Only con is the wiring terminals are on both sides of the amp, which can be tricky when trying to hide the wires. Would prefer if all terminals were on one side.

Garrett from Chico, CA on 6/25/2018

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

The amp came well packaged and had its own wiring and tuning instructions that proved helpful, despite being a male. It was exactly what I needed to power my 12" sub. Gave it four stars instead of five because I don't believe it has an option for a remote bass knob. However, I could be totally wrong, in which case, go ahead and give it five stars. Although, it did not COME with a remote bass knob, so I'm going to stick to four. Overall, good product, good price, would buy again and would recommend.

Pros: Good Price Well packaged Clear instructions Works well for my application

Cons: No remote bass adjustment knob Not my favorite mounting options (one screw hole on each corner) Did not come with an allen wrench for the wire clamps

This thing is solid! Well built, nice aluminum heat sink, power for days, nicely machined connections that are hidden when aluminum end caps are installed, driven hard it barely gets warm. Almost too good to be true for the price.

Pros: power, cosmetics, small footprint

Cons: 2V max low level input, needs to be 5V or higher for today's higher end head units

I added this to my 2013 Crew F150 and man does it ever rock. I had a 8" dvc Bazooka Bass Tube that decided to hook to it. It had way more power than I needed so I wired the dvc in a series. The AudionControl converter made hookup a breeze to my factory stereo.

Pros: * size * price * versatility

Cons: * none

Love this amp. This amp is very small and I have it powering a old 10 inch sub now and it sounds amazing. Will be getting a 12 soon and it should sound even better. It has 2 features I really like. It has auto turn on so you don't have to wire a remote wire and it can use speaker level inputs.

Pros: Small foot print. Very powerful. Auto turn on and off. Speaker level inputs and comes with the adapter.

Cons: Runs a little on the hot side at 2 ohms After about an hour of thumping it is pretty warm to the touch not hot enough to burn but still pretty warm.

Cons: Somewhat boring design

Incredible Power Amp

David from Ocala, FL on 5/20/2018

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Incredible amount of power in such a small amp. I have the amp all the way down and it is pushing my Rockford Fosgate P2 Subwoofer hard. It had cut off a few times when I had the amp up so I ordered the GTR 1001 which was rated at 1000 watts RMS at 2 Ohm. I turned it all the way up and it had less power than the smaller amp. I would say this amp puts out at least 500 watts RMS. Crutchfield customer service let me return the bigger amp. I am so pleased with Crutchfield customer service. I will definitely shop here for life

Pros: Lots of power Easy to install

Cons: No sub remote

I have 2 of these amps, one in my wife's car and one in my truck and this amp kicks ass! I replaced a Sound Ordnance M-1500 in my truck with the GTX500 and my JL Audio CP110 sounds and hits so much better! I have a Sound Ordnance B-17 in my wife's car and it bumps hard with the GTX500 pushing it. Great amp, easy to install and being it has the auto turn feature made it VERY easy to hook up to my wife's factory Harman Kardon system in her BMW. I highly recommend this amp!

Pros: Basically everything about it.

I bought this amp because of the signal-sensing turn-on feature. I have the factory My Link stereo in my 2015 Chevy Malibu and am happy with the sound except for the base. I wanted to add a sub without having to run a separate remote lead to turn on the amp. The installation was easy and the amp has plenty of power to push the single 10 inch Alpine Type-R.

Pros: Easy installation Powerful Great looking JBL Quality

Pros: Powerful. Compact. Efficient. High level input. Low level input. Runs cool!

Cons: Beware of your gain setting this amp makes more than 500w dont blow your sub!

more bad luck as of late

Msgt. W from Albuquerque, NM on 2/26/2018

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I've called Crutchfield to ask why this amp keeps going into protect when I turn it up and I'm going to have to call again. I saw the Dyno and read the reviews mabey I have that one bad one. I've been wiring my own sterios for 25 years I was one of 3 vehicles in my city with a car over 1000 watts rms the other two belonged to audio shops. I asked my neighbor how to hook up an extra battery back then cause he had a lowrider with 6 in his trunk. Just so you understand I'm not a kid using speaker wire for power n ground. I have mellowed with age no more rattling 7/11s windows when I pull in for a drink, or pulling 148 db inside the car and watching the orian van melt down a 1000 watt amp to try and show me up, these are my true stories/ credentials. I know how to ground an amp, I can't take anyone else telling me this. I've taken my multi meter to everything and it calls for 8 gauge and I'm using 4AWG OFC wire, hooked up an old kicker DXA250.4 to my 2 JBL CS1214 subs giving them 150 watts rms and the hit harder than this amp which should be giving 100 watts rms more per sub. Today I will call again had amp for a week and have not heard it as so many of you describe it. And I know JBL is not a radio shack realistic product, I will update this after either someone tells me the tid bit I've overlooked or I replace the one in howerer many that had a flaw, I used up all my luck during my decade in Iraq / Afghanistan by coming home, this is par for the course as of late in my Life.

Pros: Don't know yet. Other than Crutchfield tech and under the 60 day return.

Cons: I got no boom.

Fits my needs perfectly. Added my Kicker Solobaric 10" sub (I've had since 1992) to my 17 Silverado and powered it with this JBL GTX500 amp. This amp has way more power than I really need, so it's just loafing when I crank it up. But what I like about it is the flexibility to fine tune it to my personal taste! I'm a musician and I want my tunes to sound like the band is set up on my back seat when I crank it. With the various controls on this unit, I can tweak it just right! I'm not of the mind set of "the more bass, the better", and I don't want to rattle windows in my hood, but this amp will probably do that too if you want it to. I just want my music to sound "live" and have some punch to it! Mission accomplished!

Pros: Powerful, flexible, solid.

Cons: Bigger than expected, limits mounting options.

Got this on sale and man does this thing have some power. I saw some reviews online and the dyno was like 700+rms at 2ohms. I ran a jl w010v3 at 4 ohms and a rf prime r210 at 2 ohms in a ported box and they both sound amazing.

Pros: Underrated RMS power Small Compact Design

Its true what they say, " you can't judge a book by its cover, " I say this because of the size. At first, I was skeptical but after install and blasting my trance and hiphop.. =DDDDDDD The base hits hard with this amp!!! Thanks crutchfield and JBL!!! I had to lower the bass level!! I used this to power an Alpine SWS 12 in a sealed 1 cu ft box and for that its perfect. I switched this amplifier for an Alpine MRP 450, which put down 400 watts RMS into 2 Ohms and I can tell that this amplifier is more powerful so I believe it's putting down the 500 watts they say it does. I set my gains using a Fluke 88 volt meter and a 60 hz test tone using the method that Crutchfield has in their blog so you can be assured that when I say this amp is more powerful than my older Alpine, it is true. There are some things to consider though. The HP filter slope is not stated by JBL but I believe it to be 12 db and I prefer 24 db. If you have an aftermarket DSP or HU than use the 24 db slope on those. The absolute minimum I would use for power and ground wire is 8 gauge of good quality copper wire. 4 gauge would be better. The pots for gain and and HP filter are a little cheap feeling but they do work as they should.

Pros: True 500 watts for minimal cost. JBL quality at discount equipment prices.

Cons: HP filter slope unknown and likely 12 db octave so I would use an amplifier with a steeper slope if you can't use a HUnor DSP for that.

Very powerful amp probably more powerful than the stated specs. I went with this amp because it was small and powerful. It ended up fitting very well in my Jeep Patriot that is limited on space. Minus 1 star for the signal-sensing turn-on circuit. This circuit works, but the amp turns off after the head unit resulting in a "pop" sound in the sub-woofer. The override switch for this feature is also on the bottom of the amp making it inaccessible after you mount the amp. When turning off this feature and using the remote wire, the amp worked as expected. Currently 100+ degrees outside when I wrote this review and the amp does not run hot even under the rear cargo area with no additional cooling. Running (1) 12" sub 360W RMS/720W Max @ 2 Ohms so can't turn the amp up too high.

Pros: Powerful, small, runs relatively cool, price

Cons: Signal sensing circuitry could be better. No bass remote option.

I purchased this amp to power my new Kicker CompRT sub box (model 43TCWRT104 with the 10 inch sub and passive radiator @ 4 ohms). The amp is very ruggedly built, and doesn't get hot at all. I like the covers which protect the wiring connections and also act as heat sinks (Hard to tell from the photos, but these are on the top left and right of the amp, and removing them is necessary to make your power wire and speaker wire connections). Great amp, and the customer service from Crutchfield is top notch, as always.

Pros: Stays cool, does what it's supposed to do.

Cons: I'd prefer the adjustment knobs to stick out far enough so they can be turned without needing a screwdriver, but it isn't a big deal.

First off: it comes with RCA adapters included so you can run speaker-level factory wires if need be. The side wings remove for easy wiring, but re-attach to hide the mounting screws. The amp is contained in a rigid black powder-coated type painted metal chassis with texture to it...like an anodized finish on certain car parts. It has an enormous, functional heat sink that keeps it way cool....I ran it for hours without any perceivable temperature change whatsoever....still felt cold to the touch. I got it fully powering a 12" Kicker 10CVR122 with little effort at 4 ohms. Very little distortion whatsoever, even at max gain & bass boost. I would just make sure to ground it well as it seems to push a little bit more power than advertised...don't cheap out on the wires!

Pros: Simple to wire, easy to install. Very quick signal detect & automatic turn-on....no need for remote turn-on wire. Runs cool & puts out every bit of juice as it claims

Cons: It is heavier than I expected, if you can call that a drawback. Got it installed vertically so I had to ensure it was nice & secure

If you look on YouTube this amp pushed 717watts rms at 14.47 volts I am pushing 1 JL AUDIO W6 with ease . Even the guy at the shop that was trying to sell me a much higher priced JL amp called two other installers to listen to the sub on the amp and they had a shocked look on their face and said he didn't think it would push it that hard.

Pros: The set up ease doesn't really matter they make a big deal about it but I have an SUV and I like to keep my componets hidden its small and hits hard like my Rockford Punch 600.1 but half the size .

Cons: I didn't see the optional bass knob.

  • 500 watts x 1 @ 2 ohms

Protection Circuitry: The amplifier features protection circuitry for thermal overload, over- or under-voltage (<9V or >16V), and short circuits. The LED on the end of the amp glows red if the amp goes into protection mode.

Controls

Gain: The GTX500's rotary gain control let you match the amp's input sensitivity to the output of the source unit. The input sensitivity range of the amplifier 100mV - 2V for a low-level input, and 2V - 15V for speaker-level input. A small screwdriver (not included) is required to set the gain.

Input Level: The amp will accept low-level (line level) or high-level (speaker level) input signals. The input level switch lets you select the type of input you are using. For high-level input, there are two settings: Hi1 and Hi2. If the audio system fails to play with an amplifier connected to its output, or you get a "speaker disconnected" message on your factory stereo, set the switch to the Hi2 position. The Hi2 position includes a circuit design to fool this type of factory system into "seeing" a speaker connected to its output.

Crossover: The amp features a low-pass filter that is non-defeatable. It eliminates a range of high frequencies that are sent to the subwoofer. You can adjust the cutoff frequency of the low-pass filter from 45Hz to 300Hz using the rotary control. A small screwdriver is required to adjust the frequency.

Bass Boost: The GTX500 has a variable 0-12dB bass boost, centered at 45Hz. This allows you to dial in the amount of bass according to your personal taste.

Connections

Terminals: The JBL GTX500 uses set screw terminals for the +12V power, ground, turn-on (remote) lead, and speaker outputs. The screws can be tightened/loosened with a Phillips-head or flat-head screwdriver (not provided).

Power/Ground: The +12V Power and Ground terminals will accept up to 4-gauge wire. It is recommended that you use a minimum of 8 AWG power wire to the battery, with an in-line 50A fuse installed no more than 18" from the battery terminal. An 8 AWG ground wire (minimum) is also recommended, and attached to a metal area close to the amplifier.

Remote Turn-On: The Remote screw terminal will accept up to 8 AWG wire. Typically, an 18 AWG turn-on lead is included in an amplifier wiring kit.

Speaker-Level Input: The amp includes two bare wire-to-RCA adapters for connecting the amp to a factory radio or aftermarket head unit without preamp outputs. You should attach the left and right speaker wires from the head unit to each adapter and plug the adapter's RCA plug into the amp.

Line-Level Inputs: The amplifier is equipped with one pair of RCA inputs for connecting stereo RCA patch cables from the head unit to the amp. If your source unit only has one subwoofer output, you can connect it to either the left or right RCA inputs on the amp.

Speaker Outputs: The amp features screw terminals for connecting one speaker. The amplifier's minimum speaker impedance is 2 ohms, so you can connect any combination of speakers that presents a 2 ohm load or higher.

A
I removed a stock 7x10" sub and replaced it with a larger, lower impedance aftermarket 10" sub, but the stock amp just doesn't push it hard enough. This amp looks like it can be easily adapted to the current setup without having to remove the stock amp or completely re-configure the sound system. This amp doesn't seem over-powering or huge, and the price was right. [ Joel  Apr 16, 2018 ]

D class with 350rms and a brand I like. [ Kyle  Oct 24, 2017 ]
A
I ordered one of these while they were on sale for $109.99. I was planning on ordering another Kicker CXA300.1 mono sub amp (already own 2) for my wife and other daughters car, but $110 dollars for a 500 watt class D amp compared to $150 for a 300 watt class D amp (Kicker) was hard to pass up. After receiving and installing the JBL amp, I was pretty impressed, so I ordered 2 more! I will say that the Kicker amp seems to have more control over the sub, but the JBL clearly delivers more power. [ Toby  Oct 21, 2017 ]

Q
Do you need a loc with the JBL GTX500?
[ ColeP  Jul 23, 2018 ]
1 answer
A
This amp accepts high level input, so a LOC isn't needed.

Q
How many amps does it pull at full power output?
[ Kenny  May 09, 2018 ]
2 answers
A
500w divided by 12v equals 41.66 amps meaning you'd want to fuse it at about 50 amps on your power cable and use at least a number 8awg
[ dakota  May 24, 2018 ]
A
It has 2 25 amp fuses so 50 amps I believe.

Q
Will it bang with two 4ohm 200rms 10inch subs?
[ Andrew  Jan 28, 2018 ]
3 answers
A
It most certainly will. The JBL GTX500 hooked up the right way, will have more than enough power. Wiring the two subs in parallel will make the amp see a 2 ohm load. The JBL GTX500 is rated @ 500 watts rms @ 2 ohms. Since each 10 in. sub is rated @ 200 rms. Then your 2 subs combined only need 400 watts. This amp will do the trick.

Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best amp for your subs I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system.

Will this work with 2 Rockford fosgate r2d2 10 inch subs?
[ Adolf  Dec 11, 2017 ]
3 answers
A
Yes it will.
[ Jose Eduardo  Dec 12, 2017 ]
A
No this amp will not work with those subs, because this a mono amp meaning made for only one sub.
[ Imhotep  Dec 12, 2017 ]
A
I would think so. We have one dual voice coil 12" sub and it hits really hard and we have it dialed down to about 60%.

Q
will 10 guage power cable be ok or should I be using 8? Plan on running a 4ohm sub.
[ matt  Nov 12, 2017 ]
2 answers
A
I ran a 8 gauge power wire to make sure I did not have issues on lack of power and to keep the amp from over heating. Also, remember the longer the wire run is the thicker the gauge wire needs to be too.
[ RICHARD  Nov 13, 2017 ]
A
I would go with 8 to be on the safe side. I've always used 4 gauge regardless of wattage with my amps

Will this amp work with 2 JBL S2-1024? Thanks
[ louis  Nov 08, 2017 ]
2 answers
A
They are actually a great match. Set the impedance switch on the woofers for 4 Ohms and wire them in parallel to the mono channel. The amp will provide up to 500 watts RMS (250 per woofer) and allow you to realize their full potential. I hope that helps. My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Ryan

I don't see why it wouldn't, you won't get much bang but it will be fine for adding some bump in your trunk

Q
Will this amp push kicker (2) 10c154 comp s 15" 4 ohm subwoofer in a sealed box of my 2015 Chrysler 200 good ? Cause I was told that on the phone by Crutchfield worker, subwoofer is 50-250 Watts RMS. Peak power handling: 500 watts. Because I was skeptica because I was on the phone and a previous worker told me 1000 w ken wood amp is the one for it, and I had a friend which had a 1200 w amp (4 channel). And just thought that amp will underpower the subs.

Sure. It's a great amp. I bought one about a year or so ago. Gets a little hot when driving bigger subs but for your application it will do just fine
[ Johnny  May 04, 2017 ]
A
Good amplifier but not enough powert to push the kicker 15 properly. Just my opinion. It pushes my 12 okay in a sealed box but it's 3/4 turned up. Get a bigger amp so you won't have to buy another after this one.

Where do you install this Subwoofer? Trunk or Under one of the rear seats?
[ Larry  Jul 01, 2015 ]

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The JBL GTX500 can be mounted where ever it will fit, either under a seat or in the trunk are the typical locations. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
