Overview

Our take on the JBL GX963

JBL GX963

The 3-way design of JBL's GX963 incorporates a supertweeter for more detail in the high range.

Stylish sound

JBL makes speakers for trendsetters, those who want a car speaker that looks as good as it sounds. Their GX963 6"x9" 3-way speakers flaunt a contemporary look that's backed by JBL's legendary commitment to excellent sound. The speaker's patented Plus One™ structure extends the surface area of the polypropylene woofer cone to give you better low-frequency response. An edge-driven tweeter and supertweeter expand the high-frequency range, so you'll hear musical details that you never heard from your old speakers.

A match for any system

The GX963's low-impedance design safely draws more power from your car stereo or amp — up to 100 watts RMS — to give your music extra punch.

Great product, excellent service (as always.) I have been using Crutchfield for years (20+, maybe?) and have YET to be disappointed. This product dropped right into my wife's 2015 Forester with the included (and free!) installation hardware/adapters, and they sound great! The 2.5 ohm resistance makes great use of the stock head unit's power supply and they are definitely a step up from the stock sound. Wife is happy, I'm happy.

Decent speakers, wrong for Highlander

Jack from Houston, TX on 10/28/2018

2008 Toyota Highlander
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Spoiler: these are not appropriate speakers for 2008- 2013 Toyota Highlanders with JBL. Details below. I bought these for my wife's 2008 Toyota Highlander (with JBL stereo). Note that this model ran from 2008- 2013. What I didn't know going in is the factory stereo has a crossover built in so the 6x9s in the front doors only get low frequencies. Knowing what I know now, I should have bought either of the Pioneer or Infiniti component 6x9 offerings. Live and learn. That said, these are a decent upgrade over the ten-year-old factory speakers, bass and low midrange is much improved. These speakers were a decent fit, but did require a bit of modification to install. The factory plastic housing has some "internal structure" that interfered with the speaker basket. Four quick cuts with some tin snips resolved that. Only three of the four mounting screws fit in the factory holes in the plastic housing, so I drilled a new fourth hole. Finally, the Metra wiring harness supplied by Crutchfield was too tight for me to fit over the speakers' spade connectors (even with a little widening help from a screw driver). So I cut off the slip-on connectors and soldered the wires to the speaker terminals. Problems solved. Overall a pretty simple install.

Pros: Easy to install, decent bass and low mid-range.

Cons: Wrong application for a 2008-2013 Toyota Highlander, suggest buying a Pioneer or Infinity 6x9 component system instead.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fantastic sound and clean mid bass....replaced "beats" alpine speakers in the rear deck of my Chrysler 300S which had NO highs. The rear deck are supposed to rely on door tweeters, but these have absolutely NO sound you can hear from the front seats so sounded a bit unbalanced to me. These JBL's however sound incredible, and due to the low impedance are actually are louder on the stock beats amp than the originals. Paired nicely with infinity reference I put up in the dash... Highly recommend and a steal at the price...I personally think these are better than the current JBL line that replaced it. Did not line up exactly with the holes so needed to drill out a bit. Easy install thx to the included wire adapters! Will buy another set if I can find in alternate size for my other car!

Great sounding speakers! Excellent budget upgrade and work great with factory amp at only 2.3 ohms. Very nice open sound picks up vocals and instrumentals much better than stock and the bass is tighther and more precise. Ive been buying from Crutchfield for over 20 years and I will continue to.

Pros: Great sound

Cons: None

Very easy to install!

Michael from Clinton, MA on 8/22/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers were really easy to install. They didn't line up perfectly with all of the holes in my door where my old speakers were but I was able to get two screws in diagonally opposed and secure the other two sides. The speakers put out a solid amount of sound and bass. My Charger"s dash speakers need to be replaced next because they can't keep up with the power there speakers have. The install guide and wiring harnesses thst were included made the install literally a snap.

Pros: Easy to install. Sounds great and makes me want to get an amp. No door vibration occurred because I used some foam tape to dampen twang.

Cons: Odd spacing of holes meant I could only use 2 screws instead of all 4.

great speakers for the price. Much clearer than stock. Take care in removing trim piece above door handle. May not sound great initially, once about a week after installation they "broke in", can now hear elements of music I couldn't hear before. Wife noticed difference. Selected these as they were 2.3 ohm, and stocks were 2 ohm.

Pros: Appeared to be direct fit

Cons: Only two of the screws fit the adapter provided by Crutchfield. Had to use foam tape for one of the adapters

This was my first speaker install and it was relatively easy on my 2007 Nissan Murano....especially with the included and free speaker wire adapters. No wire splicing needed, just drop in and go. Had to drill some 1/8 in holes for the screws. No problem. These speakers provide a much deeper and cleaner BASS than my factories, and the clarity has improved 10-fold. Very satisfied with these speakers. Getting some JBL's for the rear to complete the set. Thanks, Crutchfield.

I have had these speakers for almost two years now and I absolutely love them! Very bright sound and even before I had my subwoofers installed, I loved the bass that they could put out! MUCH better than stock and I would highly recommend for anyone needing new 6x9 speakers. Also, the ohm rating is 3 ohms, not 2

2015 Nissan Altima Replacement

Shea from West Sacramento, CA on 12/18/2016

5 STARS -Affordable price, outstanding music experience. Installed Dec. 6th 2016. I am happy to give a 5 Star review. I want to tell all Nissan Altima owners to buy these speakers along with the JBL GX602 6.5 speakers to replace the factory "speaker". I am very impressed in quality and sound. These speakers are uber doober awesome! I adjusted the settings, music is clear from rap to rock and it has enough BASS, highs and lows. 6x9 300 Watts(100RMS) 2.3ohm, which is pretty close from Nissans factory speakers. You could even power them up more with an amp Hope this helped. Best of the stereo luck to all who read ????????????

Pros: The speakers have a great sound and they are very affordable to budget and I have a great sounding stereo system

Cons: High volume very little distortion from lack of power from my stereo receiver.

First unpleasant Crutchfield Experience.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've installed at least 10 complete car audio systems and done very much business with crutchfield. I ordered these speakers for my 16 Tacoma. First impression, they look awesome and are solid. I take off my door panels, and discover the brackets crutchfield sent for my new speakers aren't even close to a match. Only 2 of the 4 holes can line up no matter how you spin, turn, flip, doesn't matter. The mounting hardware was just as bad. I stripped several of the very cheap screws, I even used an old fashioned phillips thinking maybe they would hold up better with that than my ole trusty drill. no such luck. This job should have, and typically takes 30 minutes to replace door speakers. I had to basically fabricate my own way to mount the speakers to the brackets. 2 hours later I have an install I'm not happy with but the sound quality is much better than factory.

Pros: Great speaker

Cons: Wrong bracket and horrible mounting hardware.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced stock 6x9s with these. They are not much louder, but the low end has improved a lot. The sound is now right in front of your face. All ranges are fuller and defined.

Pros: Fuller and stronger bass. Mids and highs are cleaner and well defined.

Cons: Very hard to find 2 ohm speakers. Crutchfield said that they did not have them, but I found them in the open box section. I have a 2013 Nissan Frontier with 2 ohm speakers, still under factory warranty. I don't want to replace my head unit yet. Why are 2 ohm speakers so hard to find, sd they are still being used in OEM systems?

2009 Jeep Patriot
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced the stock 6x9's in a 2009 Jeep Patriot front doors and they sound great! I already had a subwoofer (Jbl gto 12in dual voice voil) and wanted something to provide better 80hz to 20,000hz range of clarity. These fit the bill very well, even with the 22 watts rms from the radio! I would imagine that a 40 to 60 watt amplifier would be best with these. They do lack in bass volume (at least at 22 watts rms), but they are very tight and clear. I would highly recommend these or any other Jbl products!

Pros: Clarity and tight response throughout the 40 to 20,000 hz range.

Cons: Low bass volume with low wattage.

2003 Toyota Camry
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

JBL has been my go to speakers, and now my 2003 Camry is complete with JBLs throughout. These were installed in the rear deck replacing the factory speakers. Taking apart and getting to the speaker mounts was the hardest part of my day, which included replacing a new 2-din stereo unit. Compounding this was no mounting adapter available for my make/model, so new holes had to be drilled through metal frame. Working space, using a drill against the back glass, was a challenge. 8 drilled holes later (4 ea. speaker), the speakers were mounted and panels and seats reinstalled, only to hear major buzzing with deep bass from my new car stereo. The speakers sound great, but the buzzing sound is irritating; my next challenge to tackle.

Pros: Great speakers.

Cons: No mounting adapter available. Drilling new mounting holes required more time and effort to install. Buzzing noise with bass tones, will be ordering baffles soon.

"Hear the truth"

David from Dallas, TX on 5/2/2016

2005 Nissan Altima

Their slogan "hear the truth" is spot on! Every single sound is crystal. From deep bass to crisp highs and everything in between, anything you throw at these speakers they can take and blow you away! I paired these with JBL GX602's and I couldn't be happier with the clarity of music in my car.

Pros: Awesome bass response, able to trick some in to thinking I've got subs, all without losing the great mid-high range it can produce

Cons: bolt holes did not quite line up with my car, only 2 diagonally, but I think I got it.

When i faded back the audio in the car to make sure each speaker was wired and working correctly the sheer brilliance that these monsters make with my back seat removed it just a big hole to the trunk where they are situated) and the reverb off my back window is fantastic. PS leaving the seats out sounds to good installed in 03 galant

Pros: Because of car placement fantastic sound, that can only be accomplished with first starting with fantastic hardware. Easy installation

Cons: Flimsy connector panel bad placement really when connecting the positive ine must secure the panel or it will twist to what 8 fear might break. Because of back window had to redrill holes eslewhere for securing them, via tekscrews. Large magnets catch the trunk lid mechanism and hold it when fully open kinda helps but i dont need it ripped off the speaker.

Great Bass

Huge improvement over my Forester's front door factory speakers. Crutchfield sent everything I needed to install them including mounting brackets, wiring harness, mounting screws, and detailed instructions. Bravo!

Pros: Great bass response. Stereo imaging (three way design). High efficiency (they play loud even with factory head unit);

Cons: none so far

I wanted to upgrade my 2013 Tacoma factory speakers. I am so glad I went with these. HUGE difference in sound and quality. Easy install and great quality. I also ordered the JBL GTO 19T tweeter for even crisper highs. Thanks to Crutchfield for the easy install guide and the aid of pieces for a custom fit for the tweeters!

Pros: Easy to install, great sound.

Pros: Detailed sound with just a head unit power at all volumes. Crutchfield data install sheets made install much easier .

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in 2008 Tacoma double cab with stock radio. Big improvement in base, lacking upper mid-range, highs a bit tinny - odd sound. It would likely help to upgrade the radio. Assuming polarity was correct, as adapter cables were keyed. No screws were provided for attaching adapter plate to the speaker (not fault of JBL). Overall improvement over stock speakers, but a little overpriced.

Pros: Bass

Cons: Lacking upper mid, tinny highs

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound is excellent, a tremendous improvement over the factory speakers. The adapter kit, however, was a dissapointment. While the car frame mounts matched the existing screws, the speaker mount slots did NOT match the speaker mounting tabs. I had to cut out each of the speaker mounting tabs to get alignment sufficient to insert mounting screws.

Pros: Excellent sound quality

Cons: Poor installation instructions and hardware

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced the cheaply made 6X9 in my 2015 Tacoma, but left the stock tweeters installed. While the supplied bracket did not fit perfectly, it wasn't a problem to slightly modify it. Three out of four holes aligned, and I had to drill another hole in the last speaker ear with a 1/8" bit. Not a significant problem as the speakers came with seal tape and the Crutchfield correct fasteners, ultimately all 4 screws were bit into the bracket standoffs. They sound great! Both speakers installed within 1 hour fairly painlessly. Completely satisfied with the way they sound with the stock Entune head unit.

Pros: Sound great, bracket easily modifiable, just don't over-tighten the screws, supplied wiring harnesses perfect.

Cons: Absolutely none!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We replaced our factory equipment in our 2008 Toyota Tacoma with a JVC receiver, six JBL speakers, and an Alpine amp. It sounds amazing! We had it professionally installed and they said Crutchfield was always so good about including everything that makes their job easier. We even saved money on the installation because everything went together smoothly and was made to fit in our truck. The customer service staff at Crutchfield was VERY good at putting together a system specifically for our truck and took the time to make sure everything would work together to give us the best possible sound at our price point. When it comes time to get the subwoofer, we will be buying it, and any other electronics, from Crutchfield.

Pros: Great sounding system at a really good price!

Cons: NONE

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I knew replacing the stock speakers in my 2014 Toyota Tacoma double Cab would be an improvement by wow ... just blown away by these speakers (installed these in the front doors and JBL GX602 6-3/4" in the rear doors). I've used many different brands in cars in the past and this is my first time with JBL. I'll never use another brand after hearing these bad boys. Next up is replacing the head unit and installing an amp ... can't wait to hear these speakers at their full potential! And as always, Crutchfield salespeople were very helpful and the installation brackets that were included with the order made installing a breeze.

Pros: Easy to install, amazing sound. Blown away by how they sound with just a stock head unit.

Cons: None!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

While replacing the head unit in my vehicle it made sense to replace the stock speakers at the same time. These speakers were recommended by Parker, one of Crutchfield's staff, and they sound as great as she said they would. The new speakers are not being powered by anything more than the head unit and, honestly, the output of these speakers sounds fantastic. The clarity, punch, and overall sound is really amazing, and installing them myself was surprisingly easy and well worth the effort. If you need new speakers for not a lot of money, I can recommend these JBLs wholeheartedly.

Pros: Great sound; good looking; easy to install

Cons: None

Great sounding speaker. Used these to replace stock speakers in a 2015 Subaru Forester. Huge improvment. Might even keep the stock head unit . . .

Pros: Clear and sharp sound. Highs are well reproduced, Low end sounds very good for a 6x9.

Cons: If you are a bass head, install a sub.

Installed in rear deck of 2014 Honda Accord on MDF spacers. This installation required some cutting of the rear deck. The Speakers are connected to a Pioneer GM-A3602 via a LC2i. The sound is great!

Pros: Crisp, clear sound. Lots of volume from little wattage. Speakers came with grills and upper spacers to help keep clearance between rear deck and mounting hardware.

Cons: None at this point.

These speakers are great! The Toyota factory speakers are of poor toy quality. I installed these myself took me one hour, very easy install with help from CRUTCHFIELD. So if you have the Toyota factory speaker and it sounds like you have soap in your ears you need a change and get a set of these.

Pros: Easy install need Drill, hammer wrench and deep socket.

Cons: need to give you eight 8-32 X 1" long screw and nylon nuts.

Features

Plus One Woofer Cones: The Plus One speaker cones offer more surface area than other speakers that fit in the same size opening. This is accomplished by using a new basket design and hi-roll surround. The result is greater bass output and an increase in efficiency.

Edge-Driven Dome Tweeters: Each speaker has an edge-driven dome tweeter and an edge-driven dome super tweeter.

High-Output Design: The 2.3Ω voice coil design compensates for the high in-line resistance of small gauge factory wiring, extracting more power from factory (or aftermarket) receivers. This results in clearer, richer sound for the listener.

I haven't tried what your asking,good luck [ Larry D.  Feb 18, 2019 ]
No they can't. The only connection going to tweeters are capacitors to avoid bass going to them. [ Ramon  Feb 17, 2019 ]
Not sure, best to get with a tech guru at crutchfield. I bought these to replace a pair of rotted out speakers in an old Honda I got for my daughter, worked great for this purpose. [ John  Feb 17, 2019 ]
I dont think so. Only one set of connections. [ George  Feb 17, 2019 ]

The 2.3-ohm voice coil design compensates for the high in-line resistance of small gauge factory wiring, extracting more power from factory (or aftermarket) receivers. This results in cleaner, richer sound from any power source, but they would present a 2-ohm load to an external amplifier. So you'd want to make sure your amp is capable of driving speakers at a 2-ohm load. I hope that helps. My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=159 [ Larry  Apr 01, 2016 ]  Staff
