JBL S2-1024 10" Component Subwoofer

The handy impedance switch eliminates the need to rewire your system when you add a second sub.

Selectable impedance

JBL's Series II S2-1024 sports a 2" diameter voice coil for exceptional power handling, while airflow from the cone's movement cools the voice coil for increased reliability. The sub's Selectable Smart Impedance (SSI™) switch allows you to change impedance from 2 ohms to 4 ohms, so you can optimize the sub for your system and the amplifier. This feature makes it easy to reconfigure your system when you add another Series II subwoofer or upgrade your amplifier.

This sub features a polypropylene cone for enhanced stiffness with an nitrile rubber surround that'll stand up the abuses of life in an automobile. The stamped steel basket provides a stable home so this sub can play accurately. The S2-1024 handles up to 250 watts RMS (1000 watts peak), and works equally well in sealed or ported enclosures, another example of its versatility.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 200 and 375 watts RMS at 2 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

Finally got it hooked up yesterday and now I have something to look forward to when going to work. Still need to tweak the amp settings but I have this in a bandpass box in my work truck and I can feel it in my chest when it hits! First 10" I've ever owned and I'm not disappointed at all, definitely bang for the buck. Built most of the "work truck system " through Crutchfield scratch and dent. Love it! Keep doing what you do guys, it's greatly appreciated!

Pros: Price, sound quality, discounted, selectable impedance

Cons: Wish it came with some type of grille

Literal, Bang for your Buck!

Used this sub in my Cadillac as a replacement. Great sub for its price! Impedance switch allows for easy install into almost any system, with any amplifier. For a 10" sub this little guy bumps, hard! It couldn't of been possible without the help from the crew at Crutchfield. Knowledgeable, kind, whole-hearted. I couldn't ask for a better company to help build with.

Pros: Easy install with any amp thanks to Impedance switch. Rubber surround for long lasting durability Sound quality is great for the price.

Cons: No mounting foam included with the sub. But cut one yourself. No hardware included to mount.

Heavy Metal!

Ryan from koloa, HI on 3/9/2016

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I purchased a pair of these as a "scratch and dent" special. I love that Crutchfield puts all the information you will need to get the right sized box. I love the sound of deep, solid-hitting bass (hard rock and heavy metal especially) so I knew that I wanted a sealed box set up. I also did all the measurements inside my car and realized that the largest thing that would fit under the back shelf (where there is no spare tire-as many new cars nowadays), was about 1 cubic foot stretched out for 2 10" speakers. These subs had the exact specs for the box that I had planned on fitting. Always measure the size area you have and what will fit first before purchasing subs. Never buy because of brand or looks alone. Well, the looks of these are awesome! I put them in the box with my semi-custom designed grill. After the work of installing everything, they sound just as awesome! They are quite loud when perfectly paired up with the Alpine MRV-M500 mono amp I installed for these. Solid, clear-sounding, hard thumping bass with plenty of power to make your ears bleed! They will also make all the metal inside the hatchback as well as the license plate rattle. I fixed it with dynamat pretty much everywhere. I even removed the license plate frame. I purchased a plain plastic cover (that is supposed to go inside a frame) and coated it with dynamat. I then used that as the backing for the plate. I even used rubber washers for the screws.

Pros: deep sound, loud, hard hitting

Cons: Almost too loud (if that is a con). I had to turn down the level on the amp so it wouldn't overpower all the other speakers.

Features

Selectable Smart Impedance (SSI): A switch on the input terminal allows you to easily change the woofer's impedance between 2Ω and 4Ω settings. (The connected amplifier should be off when changing the impedance.)

NBR Surround: Nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) is a synthetic rubber, well-suited for automotive woofer surround applications. It is durable, can withstand a wide range of temperatures (-40 to 226 °F), and is resistant to breakdown due to UV light exposure.

Enclosure Recommendations:

  • Sealed Box Volume: 0.5 ft³
  • Ported Box Volume: 1.5 ft³ with one 3" diameter x 11.3" long port (tuned to 30 Hz)
  • Infinite Baffle: The woofer can also be mounted in free air to a baffle board (no enclosure). When mounted in free air, the power handling is lowered to 125 watts RMS.
  • Band Pass: A prefabricated band pass enclosure is also mentioned in the manual as acceptable, but no specific size or tuning recommendations are listed.

Thiele-Small Parameters: Some of the parameters change based on the impedance setting:

Le (mH) 1.21 0.77
Sd (cm²) 330.10 330.10

I would recommend looking at the specs of the subwoofer and then going to your center console and measure it up to the specs of the subwoofer. If the specs of your center console are bigger, than it will fit. If the numbers are smaller, it will not.

What's the difference between 2 and 4 ohms?
[ Joe  Feb 11, 2019 ]

A
there are 2 seperate coils with different impedance resistance This is to assist for wiring multi speaker setups in series or parrallel or combinations of both. just google parrallel and series wiring in multispeaker cabs
[ Eric  Feb 11, 2019 ]
A
In layman's terms: at 2ohm it'll draw 2 times more power from the amp than with 4ohm. Generally it means it'll be louder. However, not every amp can handle 2 ohms (careful, this could damage the amp) and those that can will see sound quality drop compared to 4 (there are amps however that can drive sub 1ohm subs easily). In car subs this is more for flexibility - you can connect two subs set to 2ohm in series, and your amp will "see" them as a 4ohm sub and work comfortably. And if you only have one sub - set it to 4ohm

Q
will my stock amplifier from my 350z be sufficient to power this subwoofer?
[ ken  Mar 28, 2016 ]

yes it will be able to power this sub but you will not be able to get that sufficient peak power from the factory amp.
[ Efrem  Mar 29, 2016 ]
A
Not sure , but when I went from 300 watts to 500 watts it was Huge difference , much tighter bass responce
[ sal  Mar 29, 2016 ]
A
IMO no. You will need a separate amplifier for the sub
