JBL S2-1224 12" Component Subwoofer

The handy impedance switch eliminates the need to rewire your system when you add a second sub.

Selectable impedance

JBL's Series II S2-1224 sports a 2” diameter voice coil for exceptional power handling, while airflow from the cone's movement cools the voice coil for increased reliability. The sub's Selectable Smart Impedance (SSI™) switch allows you to change impedance from 2 ohms to 4 ohms, so you can optimize the sub for your system and the amplifier. This feature makes it easy to reconfigure your system when you add another Series II subwoofer or upgrade your amplifier.

This sub features a polypropylene cone for enhanced stiffness and an nitrile rubber surround for additional smoothness and responsiveness, while the stamped steel basket adds rigidity and its vented construction helps keep things cool. The S2-1224 handles up to 275 watts RMS (1100 watts peak), and works equally well in sealed or ported enclosures, another example of its versatility.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 200 and 400 watts RMS at 2 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

When purchasing these woofers, I noticed on the page advertising matching grille covers and clamps to hold the grill covers. The speakers are great, the grill covers are ½" too small in diameter, the stepup on the clamps is ¼" too tall, so nothing is matched and will not work together.

Great sounding sub. I put it in a truck box under the rear seat of my 06 Silverado extended cab. It works great with the small enclosure. The switch is great but i keep it at 2ohms because I run a 300watt amp. I was always a Kicker fan but these JBL's all the way around are better in quality and sound, not to mention the great price. I'm very happy with the tight bass and low notes.

Pros:

Cons: Pretty cheap terminals.

Features

Selectable Smart Impedance (SSI): A switch on the input terminal allows you to easily change the woofer's impedance between 2Ω and 4Ω settings. (The connected amplifier should be off when changing the impedance.)

NBR Surround: Nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) is a synthetic rubber, well-suited for automotive woofer surround applications. It is durable, can withstand a wide range of temperatures (-40 to 226 °F), and is resistant to breakdown due to UV light exposure.

Enclosure Recommendations:

  • Sealed Box Volume: 0.75 ft³
  • Ported Box Volume: 2.5 ft³ with one 4" diameter x 11.7" long port (tuned to 30 Hz)
  • Infinite Baffle: The woofer can also be mounted in free air to a baffle board (no enclosure). When mounted in free air, the power handling is lowered to 125 watts RMS.
  • Band Pass: A prefabricated band pass enclosure is also mentioned in the manual as acceptable, but no specific size or tuning recommendations are listed.

Q
what kind of box would you recommend for this sub?
[ Jordan  Mar 15, 2017 ]
1 answer
A
This sub can be used in either a sealed (0.75 cubic feet airspace) or ported (2.5 cubic feet airspace) enclosure. The choice is entirely up to you: https://www.crutchfield.com/learn/sealed-or-ported-subwoofer-enclosures.html?search=sealed I hope that helps. Q
Is the JBL S2-1224 an SVC or DVC subwoofer?
[ A  Jul 07, 2016 ]

A
Thanks for your question. This product is a SVC. On the product page "Details" tab you'll find this information under "Features and Specs", it is listed as: Dual Voice Coil=No. Hope that helps.

Q
Could I use this as an open air sub in a car? I'm considering mounting it to the rear deck.
[ Aaron  May 22, 2016 ]
2 answers
A
It would physically mount but the sound quality would be poor bc it needs a proper inclosure with the recommended air space to sound properly JBL recommends around 2.5 cu ft.. I personally would avoid at all cost in that manner... On the other hand, using the recommended inclosure space makes this sub sound amazing therefore I wouldn't vary far from mfg specs.. Good luck
[ Channing  May 24, 2016 ]
A
I would suggest not doing that. This SUB is desidned to be used in a baffle. It is designed to work with the back pressure produced in a sealed and ported box. Your rear deck or trunk does not provide that inviorment.
