About the JBL Stadium 5

Buck Pomerantz

Power your system in style

Amp technology has come a long way since a 5-channel amp would take up a big chunk of your trunk. JBL's Stadium 5 five-channel car amplifier can deliver 75 watts RMS to each of your front and rear speakers, plus send up to 350 watts RMS to a subwoofer — serious power from a compact chassis that fits easily into most vehicles. Or, for maximum amp output, you can power a pair of high-performance component speakers with 200 watts RMS each and a subwoofer with 350 watts RMS.

Tuning

Variable high- and low-pass filters optimize the amp's output to your speakers and subs, increasing the efficiency of the system. For the sub channel, a bass boost and phase switch help you get the bass sounding just the way you want it. And JBL includes a wired remote control so you can adjust the sub channel from the front seat.

Connectivity

This amplifier can accept low- or speaker-level inputs so it'll work in almost any system, and the package includes screw-on RCA-to-bare wire adapters for the speaker-level signal. JBL has also included their electrical anti-rotational locking (E.A.R.L.) ground terminal, for a more conductive and secure ground connection for the amplifier.

Features

Power Output: The JBL Stadium 5 five-channel amplifier delivers the following power output:

  • 75 watts RMS x 4 + 200 watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms
  • 100 watts RMS x 4 + 350 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms
  • 200 watts RMS x 2 at 4 ohms bridged
  • 2300 watts total peak power

Protection Circuitry: The amplifier features protection circuitry for thermal overload, DC voltage on the audio output, over- or under-voltage (<9V or >16V), and short circuits. The LED on the back panel of the amp glows red if the amp goes into protection mode.

Remote Level Control: The Stadium 5 comes with a rotary Remote Level Control module that lets you control the output of the subwoofer channel from a convenient location in the vehicle. A 16.5-foot cable is included.

Controls

Gain: The Stadium 5's rotary gain control let you match the amp's input sensitivity to the output of the source unit. The maximum input sensitivity of the amplifier 0.2V for a line-level input, and 2V for speaker-level input. The maximum signal level is 20V for both line and speaker level inputs. There are separate gain controls for the front, rear, and subwoofer channels. A small screwdriver (not included) is required to set the gain.

Input Level: The Input Level switch should be set to match the type of input signal connected to the amplifier. If using line-level connections, select LO. If using speaker-level inputs, select Hi1 or Hi2. Hi2 contains a special circuit designed to fool a factory audio system to detect a speaker connected to its output, and should be used only if Hi1 doesn't work.

Sub Input: The Sub Input switch lets you select the source of the subwoofer channel. If you are connecting a separate subwoofer input from the source unit, you should select "EXT" (External). If you do not have a separate subwoofer input, you can send the signal from the front or rear channels to the subwoofer channel by selecting "INT" (internal).

Crossover: The amp features switchable crossovers for the front, rear, and subwoofer channels. On the front and rear channel crossovers, you can choose LPF (low-pass filter), HPF (high-pass filter), or Full (no crossover). The subwoofer channel crossover is low pass only. The cutoff frequencies are variable, and can be set between 32Hz and 320Hz using the rotary controls. The crossovers have a 12dB per octave slope. A small screwdriver is required to adjust the frequency.

Bass Boost: The amplifier's Bass Boost circuit is adjustable from 0dB to +9dB, centered at 70Hz. A small screwdriver is required to adjust the bass boost control.

Phase: You can set the subwoofer phase at 0° or 180°. While playing music with lots of bass, slide the phase switch back and forth. Choose the setting that provides more bass. If there is little difference, leave the switch at 0°.

Auto Turn-on: If your stereo does not have a "Remote Out" wire, you can set the amplifier to automatically turn on when it detects a speaker level signal on the input. If you are connecting a remote turn-on lead, the switch should be left in the "off" position.

Connections

Terminals: The JBL Stadium 5 uses set screw terminals for the +12V power, ground, turn-on (remote) lead, and speaker outputs. The screws can be tightened/loosened with a Phillips-head screwdriver (not provided).

Power/Ground: The +12V Power and Ground terminals will accept up to 4-gauge wire. It is recommended that you use a minimum of 4 AWG power wire to the battery, with an in-line 100A fuse installed no more than 18" from the battery terminal. A 4 AWG ground wire (minimum) is also recommended, and attached to a metal area close to the amplifier.

E.A.R.L. Terminal: An Electrical Anti-Rotational Locking (E.A.R.L.) terminal is provided for the ground wire. The terminal is designed for 1/0 AWG ground wire, and requires a large crimping tool to secure the wire. The terminal includes 3 screws to attach the terminal to your vehicle's metal chassis.

Remote Turn-On: The Remote set screw terminal will accept up to 8 AWG wire. Typically, an 18 AWG turn-on lead is included in an amplifier wiring kit.

Power/Ground Adapter: If you wish to use power and ground wire larger than 4 AWG, you can use the included plug-in adapter. The adapter has posts that insert into the +12V, REM, and GND terminals and offers 1/0 AWG power and ground terminals. An 18 AWG screw terminal for the remote turn-on wire is also provided.

Speaker Outputs: The amp features set screw terminals for connecting four speakers and one subwoofer. The amplifier's minimum speaker impedance is 2 ohms.

Line-Level Inputs: The amplifier is equipped with a three pairs of RCA inputs for connecting stereo RCA patch cables from the head unit to the amp.

Speaker-Level Input: The amp includes six speaker-level adapters (bare wire-to-RCA) for connecting the amp to a factory radio or aftermarket head unit. You should insert the speaker wires from the head unit into the adapters and plug the adapters into amp's RCA inputs.

Remote Level Control: An RJ-25 modular "phone" jack is provided for connecting the Remote Level Control cable.

Q
What is the best wiring kit for this amplifier? If I'm doing 4 car speakers and eventually subs, all jbl
[ SAMANTHA  Dec 29, 2022 ]
1 answer
A
Greetings Samantha, and thank you for your question. Amp wiring kits are for the most part not everything one needs to wire all the speakers and subs. An amp kit will, have power, ground, fuse, and holder, wire ties, and some will have an RCA cable. This amplifier needs a 4 gauge amp wiring kit, and perhaps more than one RCA cable if your radio is an aftermarket. Please contact one of our advisors at 800-324-9695 to get everything you would need to install that amplifier.

Q
If my Alpine sub is 4 ohm can I have this setup at 2 ohm? Or does it have to be setup at 4 ohm?
[ RICK  Jul 12, 2022 ]
1 answer
A
If your Alpine sub is 4 ohm Rick, then connected to this JBL Stadium 5 5-channel amp the sub would get the 200 watt amount from the sub channel. To drop your sub impedance to 2 ohms the easiest way would be to connect another exact 4 ohm Alpine sub in parallel and run dual! The other option would be to switch your current single sub to a 2 ohm model for the most power from the JBL amp's sub channel.

Q
I have a 360 watt arms polkAudio db1240 and jbl club front and rear speakers. Will this amp provide enough power?

A
I am really happy with my purchase. It drives my front and rear pioneers (80W) each and a Kicker 8"DVC 4ohm (350w) really well. I do have it the sub wired to 2ohms to create the maximum 4X100w and 1x350w. Not at all regretting the purchase. Very Impressive for the size! 4 guage power cable is a must.
[ TIMOTHY  Jul 20, 2020 ]
A
Definitely.

I have this amp and love it. I have 6 1/2 focal components in the doors and two sets of 6 1/2 focal components in custom boxes in the rear And one 10" dual voice coil Rockford sub in a sealed box. So this amp is running six 6 1/2's + six tweeters + one 10" subwoofer. I'm running an alpine deck and using my usb input with flac hi def audio files. My max volume is 30 and 18 is about as high as you need it before it hurts the ears. The sound quality is much better than the 1000 watt rockford Fosgate five channel that I pulled out and returned.

I purchased the Kicker 46CSS654 6-1/2" Component System for the front of my Honda CRV and Pioneer TS-A652F 6-1/2" 3-way Speakers in the back alone with a dual box sub with 2 Pioneer 12". Runs all of that perfectly fine.
[ JEREMY  Jul 20, 2020 ]
Q
Would you set the gain and other settings on the amp or the radio?
[ AUSTIN  May 27, 2020 ]

A
I would set the gains on the amp. Make settings like that on the amp whenever possible.
