I've learned from years of testing in-ear headphones that it often comes down to how well they fit. Fit is crucial for comfort, performance, and how well they stay in place. The JBL Tune Flex wireless earbuds are the first I've seen that can fit with or without the included ear tips — so you can choose depending on your task.
Without the ear tips, they rest in your ear with a more "open-air" design that helps keep you naturally aware of your surroundings. There are three sizes of tips included that will give you more secure fit, with a tighter seal. That allows JBL's noise cancellation to do it's thing and makes sure you get the full impact of the large 12mm drivers' deep bass thump.
Strong Bluetooth pairing
Bluetooth 5.2 is on board, a newer version of the popular wireless technology. That means a more stable connection for playing music and podcasts — or making calls — with your phone.
Noise cancellation and ambient aware modes
JBL's noise-canceling ciruitry silences loud distractions, so you can stay focused on your music or podcasts. To be clear — the level of noise-canceling here isn't as strong as the more adaptive circuitry found in JBL's premium offerings. But this company has a knack for delivering an above-average experience, from their entry-level models on up.
These earbuds can be worn with or without ear tips.
When you need to be aware of your surroundings, you can turn off the active noise cancellation and activate JBL's "Smart Ambient" feature. This uses the built-in mic to increase the volume of ambient sounds, so it even works when you're using the ear tips. You can further fine tune the level of noise cancellation versus external sounds with the free, downloadable JBL Headphone app. It's available for Apple® and Android™.
Charging case banks hours of power
These streamlined earbuds arrive packed in a compact charging case that's takes up little space in your pocket or bag. You get about six hours of listening and noise cancellation on a single charge, which is right in line with most true wireless earbuds these days. The case banks up to 24 hours of power to recharge the earbuds on the move — and just 10 minutes in the case gives you up to two hours of listening.

Features
Overview: The JBL Tune Flex ear buds are true wireless in-ear headphones with no connecting cables. Each ear bud has a built-in rechargeable battery, plus controls for power, music playback, phone calls, and activating your favorite voice assistant. The ear buds feature Active Noise Cancelling with Smart Ambient. Tune Flex ear buds come with 4 pairs of ear tips (1 open, 3 sealing), a charging cable, and a hard, flip-top charging case.
Drivers: The JBL Tune Flex ear buds are equipped with 12mm dynamic drivers that deliver the JBL Pure Bass Sound with a wide frequency range of 20Hz-20kHz.
Water-Resistant: The Tune Flex headphones are IPX4-rated for water and sweat resistance. You can wear them while you work out or in bad weather without worry.
Bluetooth: The ear buds connect to your smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth version 5.2. The ear buds support A2DP (v1.3), AVRCP (v1.6), and HFP (v1.7). When you remove the ear buds from the charging case, they automatically enter pairing mode. Dual Connect + Sync connects your device to both ear buds at the same time. Google's Fast Pair immediately pairs the Tune Flex to your Android device (requires 6.0 and up). Replacing them in the charging case powers them off.
Stereo/Mono Modes: The Tune Flex lets you pair both the left and right ear buds to your device for stereo mode. You can also choose to pair either the left or right ear bud to operate in mono mode.
4 Microphones: Each ear bud has four built-in microphones. Beamforming microphones are located on each ear bud for excellent voice clarity for phone calls and to communicate with your Voice Assistant. Additional microphones are located near the ear bud nozzle and on the outer portion of the ear bud to pick up sounds in the ear canal and environmental sounds all around you for the ANC and Smart Ambient features.
Voice Assistants: The Tune Flex is compatible with a wide variety of digital Voice Assistants. You can activate your smartphone's built-in voice assistant like Google Assistant, Siri, and Bixby to get the weather forecast, set timers, play music, or a host of other activities. Activation of your Voice Assistant can be done by pressing a button on your ear buds, through the JBL Headphones app, or by using your voice.
VoiceAware: In the JBL Headphones App, you can adjust the amount of your own voice you can hear through the headphones. The VoiceAware feature can be turned on or off, and the level set to low, mid, or high.
Active Noise Cancelling/Ambient Aware/TalkThru: The Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) and Ambient Aware features let you choose whether you want to shut out your environment or connect to it. ANC lets you focus on your music or just enjoy the silence by eliminating noise from your surroundings. Microphones pick up ambient noise and ANC applies an equal-but-opposite audio signal to cancel that noise. If you want to be more aware of your surroundings, you can enable Ambient Aware, which take the sounds of your surroundings and send them into the earphones. You'll be able to listen to public announcements, or just hear what's going on around you, without removing your ear buds. The TalkThru feature simply lowers the level of the music in your earphones to let you talk to your friends without removing the ear buds.
Controls: The JBL Tune Flex features basic phone, music playback, and Voice Assistant controls on each ear bud. You can also activate ANC, Ambient Aware, and TalkThru. Advanced controls are available through the JBL Headphones app, including assigning custom controls to each ear bud. The ear buds also have sensors that can detect when you place the ear buds in your ears and when you remove them. When playing music, the music will pause when you remove one or both ear buds, and will resume playback when you replace the ear buds in your ear.
JBL Headphones App: The JBL Headphones App, available for iPhone / iPod touch (with iOS 11.0 or later) and Android (7.0 and up), lets you customize your Tune Flex listening experience. Through the app, you can set up your Voice Assistant with OK Google, and assign actions to the desired buttons on the earbuds. You can activate and adjust the Active Noise Cancellation, Ambient Aware, and TalkThru features. The app's Custom EQ provides three preset EQ curves (Jazz, Vocal, Bass) or you can adjust the 10-band EQ to personalize your sound the way you like it. If you misplace your ear buds, the "Find My Buds" will help you find them by sending a "ring" notification.
Rechargeable Batteries: Each of the JBL Tune Flex ear buds contains a 3.85-volt 55mAh Lithium-Ion polymer rechargeable battery. The charging case contains its own 3.85-volt 570mAh Lithium-Ion polymer rechargeable battery. The ear buds provide up to 8 hours of continuous music playback (ANC off), or 6 hours with ANC on. Talk time is approximately 4.5 hours. The charging case adds another 24 hours (3 full charges), for up to 32 hours of total combined playback time. The ear buds charge in the case in approximately two hours in the provided case with the supplied USB-C cable. A 10-minute quick charge gives you approximately 2 hours of playback time.
