I have had this radio for almost one year. Worked well for a while but now the BT has gone schizophrenic, it connects, this it disconnects. Sometimes you have to shut the vehicle off and restart it to get it to reconnect. I am going to try to disconnect it from the power and start over. Disappointing that it only lasted a year

Who sells a 2014 vehicle without bluetooth handsfree for cell phones? Chevy for one. Had to replace my truck and not having handsfree call capability is a big safety risk and a hassle. I knew that with Crutchfield, I could do the installation with no issues and with everything I needed to get it right the first time, without multiple trips to the store.

A little pricey for just a radio and the radio functions are not particularly intuitive. The manual is for about 6 different models; all with different options.. It does play well and compared to my original equipment from Toyota, its definitely an upgrade.

Krishna from Simi Valley, CA on 8/10/2018

    2002 Nissan Maxima

Very nice product overall. Fit well in my 2002 Maxima. My big complaint is the microphone. Minus one star for that. Not sure how you would bring it forward unless you punch a hole in the kit and pull out through that hole. Poor design in an otherwise fine unit for the price. Would have posted pics, but my car went to the graveyard after enjoying the stereo for only 1 month!

Pros: Excellent sound clarity. Compact design. Great features. Looked Nice. And worked with the ASWC unit like a charm.

Cons: Terrible microphone setup. Archaic. Minus one star.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easily installed like most Crutchfield products...powerful enough for improved performance in older model vehicles but not so much that one needs to replace speakers. Low cost. Most products purchased through Crutchfields have been more than satisfactory, primarily due to outstanding customer support. They've stayed with me through many diagnostic problems and have already had the answers to most problems through experience and their research.

Pros: very smart machine, internal diagnostic circuit tells you about wiring faults. Low cost for what you get.

I am loving my Kenwood head unit. So far, in the two weeks i have been using it, i have found it to be a great sounding head unit. The unit is pretty easy to use and set up. the only problematic areas that i had were dialing in the sound. each source sounds a little different to me so i have to constantly play with settings. The source button is a little slow to scroll through the selections but its not a major concern. It's slightly annoying to click source, it kicks to the next source and performs a little graphic then you can click the next source again. so there is not way to quickly kick over from usb to say radio. All being said i do love the unit and bluetooth and every function works well and sounds great.

Pros: Great sounding unit. Easy to install. looks good user friendly controls works great with steering wheel controls

Cons: A little slow to scroll between sources each source has a little different sound quality (could be my source files too) Iheart radio function is a little confusing to set up.

My Kenwood is exactly what I wanted and it's all because of the customer service rep I talked to named Nemo. Yes, it's true I found Nemo. Nemo took the time to listen to me and understand just what I wanted for my truck. He asked lots of question and in the end offered up the Kenwood KDC-BT272U. He never tried to up sell me with add on's that I didn't really need but instead took the time and offered what I was asking for. He new just what my 23 year old vehicles could support. I got my purchase pre-wired which made installation easy and received free added items and instructions specific to my 95 Nissan HardBody D21 Pick-Up. Now that's customer service.

    2001 Nissan Altima Smooth Installation

Dixie from Norcross, GA on 3/30/2018

    2001 Nissan Altima
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed the new unit and everything went smoothly. 2001 Nissan Altima. The factory unit is 1 DIN with a pocket underneath and the order came with a Metra 88-00-9000 Dash Kit which it turned out I did not need. The factory bracket held the original unit on top and the pocket underneath so all I had to do was remove the 4 screws holding the factory unit and attach the new unit to the bracket - no need to mess with the pocket. I did not need the metal sleeve that came with the unit. I'm really glad I ordered the ready wire harness as it all just plugged in of course. Once installed it looked like the opening in the receiver trim panel was not going to fit over the front of the new unit - the new unit was too wide for the opening. Then I noticed the new unit had a removable bezel that when removed allowed the receiver trim panel to fit just fine (whew!) Some folks in the comments section dissed the lack of audio (tone) controls and things but I think if you mess around with the settings enough (there are plenty of adjustments) so they should RTFM or visit the Kenwood site for more details. I would add a new first step in the Mastersheet Factory Radio Removal section which would be: 1. Before removing the factory unit be sure to eject any CD(s) that might be inside because you probably won't get them out later unless you reinstall the factory unit.

Pros: Everything I have looked at so far is working fine but I have not investigated all the features yet. There are lots of potential adjustments and customization that can be made which can be found in the manual - that will take some training to learn where all the things are.

Cons: The mastersheet install guide needs an important first step: 1. Before removing the factory unit be sure to eject any CD(s) that might be inside because you probably won't get them out later unless you reinstall the factory unit.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Finally got around to installing this in my wife's '07 Impala LS (no Bose) today. The installation Itself took about fifteen minutes with this. That included taking the drivers' side panel off from under the steering column to run the mic wire in the dash. For as "simple" as this head unit is, the setup options are many, and really probably overdone. This is why I took off a star. Menus should not be this unintuitive. Barring all that, the thing really does look decent where a double DIN unit used to reside. Once I got it set up where it needed to be, I fired up a CD, and some FLAC files from a USB drive (SanDisk USB 3.0 32GB) and considering stock speakers are in the car, it sounds decent. This is for my wife, and she doesn't want what I have in my Nissan, so this will do well for her. It's nice in that, like the Pioneer in my Nissan, it will take two phones connected via BT at once. This is particularly handy for her as she travels for the state for work, and means that either her work or personal phone will ring through. We like that, and was a bulk of the reason I chose this piece. Time will see how well it holds up.

Pros: Inexpensive, decent feature set for for this price point, easy install

Cons: Complicated menus, BT setup not ultra intuitive

The product, Kenwood KDC-BT272U Seems top notch, well built and very high tech. First let me say; I am seventy-five years old, never installed a auto stereo or a house hold one for that matter, never seen one done and if I could do it you could. The Crutchfield pre-wired to fit my car was a life saver. The instructions to remove your unit was very clear and easy to do. Can't say the same for the Scouche installation kit. No instruction and poor drawing. I spent perhaps a half hour installing the stereo it self but took over a hour for trial and error fitting of the kit and ended up no using the small trim piece. It looks fine without it and it was a quarter of an inch to wide to allow fitting of the face piece that surrounds the stereo anyway. All in all I am happy with the price, the customer service from Crutchfield, free shipping and the product. Highly recommend

I was looking for decent and cheap because I wanted Bluetooth in a company vehicle, knowing I won't be keeping it forever. Went to Crutchfield online thinking it was a long shot. I got awesome for a great price. Way better than I thought I wanted to afford. User Interface is very friendly, it's instantly responsive to Bluetooth controls, whether from my phone or the deck itself, the upgrade in sound quality from mid-grade factory speakers was a pleasant surprise and it looks pretty good, too. You can't go wrong for the price.

Pros: Great sound improvement to factory speakers. Easy to install and very user friendly. Instant response Bluetooth controls, from deck and phone or iPod.

Set up was far easier than I could have imagined and the sound is superb. Being able to customize the sound is wonderful too since I grew up listening to Classical and then into the 60's, 70's and 80's rock scene. Every genre of music has its own sound enhancement requirements which this receiver can easily handle. Love it!

Pros: Bluetooth, equalizer, sound settings, display settings.

Excellent 'after market' radio that fits perfectly in my 2006 Jeep Wrangler. Easy to install and came with everything I needed. Has tons of options for listening to music, charges my Apple products via usb, and the different sound settings make my old speakers sound new again. Could not be happier with my new radio.

Pros: The "live chat" with a Crutchfield employee was incredibly helpful. They have great customer service and are very knowledgeable. The radio they suggested was a perfect fit and came with everything I needed.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this head unit along with speakers to replace the factory equipment in my F250SD. I was looking for a radio with fairly basic controls (tough to find nowadays), but I wanted aux and USB ports, decent RMS output, and manual EQ adjustments. Crutchfield delivered quickly and provided the necessary installation components. This is a pretty basic Kenwood radio, so I could have purchased it from a lot of different vendors, but Crutchfield service is head and shoulders above the rest. Just got it installed a couple of days ago, very impressed with the product so far, does a good job powering my Infinity and Polk speakers without an amplifier.

Pros: Good RMS output Great EQ and staging controls Front USB and aux ports

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not impressed. Build quality (feel of buttons, etc) on the cheap side. Most annoying - does very poorly playing mp3/wma burned to cd. Probably played complete songs on 1/3 of the tracks (at most), otherwise jumps to another track after playing only part of it. And in shuffle mode on this mp3 cd, very slow changing between songs. I thought it might be the burn quality - so I tried it on my 10-yr old Sony CDX-GT510 (purchased from Crutchfield) in another car. Near perfect play, snappy when shuffling. So this seems to be a Kenwood problem. I hope it at least does OK with factory audio cds - we'll see. Haven't tried the USB yet. Radio seems good, bluetooth connected easily to a cheap Tracfone and works, so that is good. Sound seems to be OK. This was a gift, I already installed it and it is 300 miles away so I won't be pulling it out and returning it - but disappointing and embarrassing. I have to wonder why Crutchfield is selling this, even more concerning is that Crutchfield recommended this. That said, delivery was fast, everything in the box, good instructions. But I wish I got something else - something that works the way it is supposed to.

Pros: Easy install. Bluetooth works as advertised. Screen easy to read. Set-up straightforward.

Cons: Cheap feel to it. mp3/wma cds don't work. Shuffle is slow between tracks. No remote.

It works well so far, easy install and affordable. Has many features I have no use for since I don't use a smart phone. A regular remote control would have been nice, I would like to find a head unit without Bluetooth or any of those smart phone features. I needed the USB port more than anything, still figuring out if I can pick random play for a specific folder.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth 3.0: The Kenwood KDC-BT272U is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (ver. 3.0) allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.6 (Hands Free Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.5 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Kenwood KDC-BT272U. Visit Kenwood's Support Site for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

SSP & USB Pairing: With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Kenwood KDC-BT272U without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. You can even pair your Apple iPhone (iOS 5+) or Android smartphone (running Kenwood Music Play App) by simply connecting it to the Kenwood head unit via USB and following a single prompt on the head unit's display.

    • Dual Phone Connection: Thanks to the Dual Phone Connection feature, two Bluetooth-enabled phones can remain connected to the Kenwood receiver. This means you can an answer an incoming call from either phone from the head unit. Also, both of your phone's contact lists are downloaded to the receiver. To make a call from one of the phones using the Kenwood receiver, you simply have to select Phone 1 or Phone 2 on the head unit's front-panel.
    • Music Mix: The new Music Mix feature allows five Bluetooth audio source devices to be connected to the Kenwood receiver at one time, so you can switch between Bluetooth playback sources a lot easier and quicker. While "BT Audio" source is selected on the head unit, you can simply press the music playback button on your connected Bluetooth source devices to switch between devices and begin music playback. However, you cannot stream audio from two different Bluetooth audio source devices at the same time or combine music libraries or playlists from two different connected devices.
Note: You can pair up to five Bluetooth-enabled devices to the Kenwood head unit. When an already paired Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units.

Bluetooth Hands-Free Communication (w/ External Mic): The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The controls of the KDC-BT272U can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering a Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. You can answer the call from the head unit's front-panel controls, or setup the head unit to automatically answer the incoming call immediately or after 1-30 seconds. The KDC-BT272U also supports the Call Waiting function, so you can answer another incoming call while suspending the current call you are on. Your compatible cell-phone must also support this feature.
    • Dialing a Number: Using the KDC-BT272U, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:
      • Enter Phone #: Allows you to directly dial a phone number up to 32 digits from the head unit's control knob or remote control.
      • Preset Dial: Allows you to register up to 6 phone numbers for quick dialing. The preset numbers can be accessed from the head unit's front-panel controls.
      • Phone Book: You can download phone book data from your mobile phone to the KDC-BT272U. You can then dial a contact within the phonebook from the head unit's front-panel controls. Contacts are categorized as Home, Office, Mobile, Other, or General.
      • Call History: The Call History is a list of calls that have originated from and were received by this unit that you can dial. You can select Outgoing, Incoming, or Missed calls.
      • Voice Dialing: If your mobile phone supports voice recognition, then you can dial out by voice command. Simply speak into the included microphone.

External Mic: The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the volume level, noise cancellation, and echo cancellation of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 10' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone offers an integrated mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash.

Wireless Audio Streaming: The Kenwood KDC-BT272U supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone or audio player. You are able to stream your stored music library on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, as well as music apps downloaded on your smartphone to the Kenwood KDC-BT272U for playback.

    • SBC + AAC Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the KDC-BT272U offers support of AAC.  By supporting AAC, the KDC-BT272U offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
    • Advanced Music Browsing: In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat), the KDC-BT272U lets you browse your stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, etc. (AVRCP 1.4 phones only; which includes Android 4.0+ and iPhone 5.0+).
    • Song/Artist Information: The head unit will also display your stored music and music app's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title (not compatible with all apps).
Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control: When paired and connected to an iPhone with Siri via Bluetooth, the Kenwood KDC-BT272U has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. Simply press-and-hold down on the head unit's Answer Button to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the KDC-BT272U and its microphone. You even can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone with Siri. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

Note: The head unit's display will only indicate hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Kenwood KDC-BT272U; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

    Android & iPhone Integration

Android Open Accessory 2.0 (AOA 2.0) Connectivity: The Kenwood KDC-BT272U's front-panel USB port lets you connect select Android OS 4.1+ smartphones that support AOA 2.0 for music playback. Kenwood does not guarantee operation with all Android devices, regardless of operating system. There are two Android AOA 2.0 modes to choose from based on what content you want to listen to and how you want to control it.
    • Hand Mode: The Kenwood KDC-BT272U supports Android Open Accessory 2.0 (AOA 2.0), which lets  you connect your Android (OS 4.1+)  smartphone to the KDC-BT272U's front-panel USB port and listen to stored music and music apps from your Android device through the Kenwood head unit. You'll be able to control basic playback functions such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track. Other advanced music navigation will still be done from your Android smartphone's touchscreen. In this mode, the head unit will not display song/artist information; only "Hand Mode" will show up on display. You'll continue to view song/artist information from the Android device's touchscreen. You'll also still be able to access other functions and applications from your Android smartphone's touchscreen, while listening to music through the head unit. If you make a call or answer a call from your smartphone while listening to music in this mode, the music will pause until you are finished with the call and then start back up again.
    • Browse Mode (via Kenwood Music Play App): Downloading the Kenwood Music Play app onto your Android (OS 4.1+) smartphone with AOA 2.0 support not only allows you to listen to stored music from your Android device through the Kenwood CD receiver connected via USB, but it also lets you browse your Android smartphone's music library from the head unit's front-panel controls. You can browse your store music library by Playlist, Artist, Song, Album, or Genre. The contents of a Playlist or Category can be searched alphabetically or numerically; you can even skip through the stored music files in specific increments (0.5/1/5/10%). You can also control Play/Pause and Previous/Next track from the head unit. In addition, the head unit will display song/artist information. You can exit the Kenwood Music Play app to access other functions and applications of your Android smartphone, while your stored music library is still playing through your head unit. If you make a call or answer a call from your smartphone while listening to music in this mode, the music will pause until you are finished with the call and then start back up again.

iPhone Direct Connection: The Kenwood KDC-BT272U's front-panel USB port can be used to connect your Lightning Apple device or 30-pin iPhone 4S to the head unit. The USB connection allows for playback of stored music and music apps on your iPod or iPhone through Kenwood receiver. If you have a newer iPod/iPhone with the Lightning-connector, you can use Kenwood's Lightning connector-to-USB cable (113KCIP103 sold separately) or the Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the KDC-BT272U. If you have an iPhone 4S with a 30-pin dock connector, you can use the dock connector-to-USB cable that comes with your Apple device or a 3rd party "Made for iPod/iPhone" certified dock-to-USB cable (sold separately) to connect your iPhone 4S to the KDC-BT272U.

    • Head Unit Control: From the head unit's front-panel controls you can search for stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, and Composer. The contents of a Playlist or Category can be searched alphabetically or numerically; you can even skip through the stored music files in specific increments (0.5/1/5/10%). The KDC-BT272U also supports Repeat (file/all) and Random (album/all) playback functions of stored music on your iPod/iPhone. In addition, you'll be able to control basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track) from stored music and select music apps streamed to your iPhone. You can also choose to control your Apple device from its own touchscreen, instead of the head unit.
    • Song/Artist Info Display: The KDC-BT272U will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information such as Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album title.

Smartphone Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1.5A of current to power and charge your connected Apple iPod/iPhone or Android smartphone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position (if your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it).

     Internet & AM/FM Radio

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood KDC-BT272U is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. When set for rear speakers, the rear outputs operate with the unit's fader control. When set for subwoofer, the outputs are non-fading. Once the Subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level (-15 to +15) from the CD receiver.

Audio Settings: The Kenwood KDC-BT272U offers a variety of audio settings to further enhance your music listening experience.

    • Sound Reconstruction: When MP3, WMA, AAC files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Sound Reconstruction function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate.
