About the Kenwood CMOS-230

Any car will do

Kenwood's CMOS-230 rear-view camera is tiny — less than a cubic inch — so it's a natural fit on the rear of almost any vehicle. Once installed, shifting into reverse will let you check out the view behind you on your receiver's video screen. The camera captures a 128-degree horizontal view and 103-degree vertical view, so you'll really get the big picture — especially handy if you're trying to back up in a large vehicle or if you're towing something.

The 24-foot cable and harness assembly is long enough for most vehicles and includes a composite video connector, which means it'll work with almost any video receiver. Mounting bracket included.

Note: A rear-view camera provides an additional view when reversing your vehicle. It is intended to be used in conjuction with your rear- and side-view mirrors to give a fuller picture of what's behind you. It is not intended as a replacement for your mirrors.

Features

Compatibility: The Kenwood CMOS-230 universal rear-view Camera can be used as a back-up camera with Kenwood in-dash navigation and DVD receivers. However, the standard composite video output (RCA plug) extension cable makes it compatible with virtually any in-dash mobile video receiver.

Waterproof Chassis: The camera is built into a compact waterproof aluminum case, making it perfect for mounting outside the vehicle.

Super Wide Viewing Angle: The 128° horizontal and 103° vertical viewing angles provide an excellent near field view of anything behind you. The camera gives you a mirror image for rear view confirmation.

CMOS Optics: The 1/3.6" color CMOS image sensor has approximately 330,000 pixels to deliver a high quality picture.

Illumination Range: The rear-view camera provides an illumination range of approximately 0.9 to 100,000 lux. It offers less light distortion from nearby light sources.

Mounting Bracket: The CMOS-230 rear-view camera includes two brackets to either mount the camera to a horizontal or vertical surface on the outside your vehicle. Once mounted, you are able to physically adjust the angle of the camera. Make sure the camera's "Kenwood" logo is facing up.

After reading a multitude of reviews online, including Crutchfield & talking to car stereo shops, the CMOS-230 works well when connected to a Kenwood head unit. I considered the CMOS-320, but didn't feel I would use the extra features, especially for an extra $200. As usual, Crutchfield is the best place for price & great customer service!! Q
Would this camera be a good option for the back of a fifth wheel trailer? I have purchased and installed a Kenwood excelon head unit from Crutchfield.
[ Trevor  Aug 08, 2019 ]
2 answers
A
I would say it's much better than NO rear view camera. I upgraded my '01 Honda Accord with a Kenwood NAV system and this camera, and have been pleased with its capability. My only minor gripe so far has been the blurring of the image when rain drips onto the camera lens... this is most likely the fault of the local sound shop installer, and may be correctable with some sort of fabricated water shield.
[ WILLIAM  Aug 13, 2019 ]
A
I installed this camera with my excelon about 2 years ago on my 15 passenger express van and have had zero problems with this camera. Camera is very good quality, it is clear and does what it is supposed to do. Not sure how long the truck and trailer is but you might have to add an extension.

Q
Does the vehicle have to be running and in reverse for the camera to start?
[ Holtzman  Jun 25, 2019 ]
2 answers
A
No, it doesn't have to be in reverse. I have a Kenwood stereo that has a camera button. It turns the camera on whether its in Reverse or Park. I have also turned it on while in Drive.
[ dave  Jun 26, 2019 ]
A
I just have to have the head unit (Kenwood DDX9905S) on. I can click the camera button than tap on the screen to alternate between the front and rear cameras. When I put the car is reverse the rear camera with auto display.

It all depends how you wire it. I have it set up so I can turn it on at anytime while towing.
[ LEONARDO  Jun 26, 2019 ]

I've got mine wired to the reverse circuit of the vehicle. While it doesn't have to be running to work, it does have to have the ignition switched to accessory and shifted into reverse.

What is the best way to mount this on an '06 F150? I can't seem to find a decent way to mount it that is not either easily broken, or interferes with the lowering of the tailgate.

[ joe  Dec 22, 2018 ]

I imagine it should. I can't speak for jeep specifically, but I have it setup on a manual 02 Audi S4. It has pretty standard wiring. Power wires and a standard A/V video input connector. I have it connected to a Kenwood Nav head unit. It's a good camera.
[ Daniel  Dec 23, 2018 ]

I put it on my FJ with manual tyranny. I had to work with Tech support to find the reverse signal wire u see the dash. However, now, a year later the camera is starting to act up.

What is the resolution of this camera?
[ Sean  May 08, 2018 ]

A
The Kenwood CMOS-230 camera uses a 1/3.6" color CMOS image sensor with approximately 330,000 pixels. As Mike indicated above however, the video resolution will depend on the screen/monitor its connected to. Q
This camera work with DDX99O3S.My car is HONDA ACCORD SPORT 2016, Can I replace it same factory area?
[ THOMAS  Mar 22, 2018 ]
1 answer
A
Both your stereo and this camera use the standard composite video (RCA) connection so, yes, they are compatible. The CMOS-230 is not vehicle-specific but it is very small and comes with a bracket that allows you to mount it to a horizontal or vertical surface on your vehicle. [ Dave  Jan 15, 2018 ]

It cannot be turned off, no. In order to use this camera on the front of the vehicle, your aftermarket monitor would have to offer a reverse (mirror) image option for it's camera input

Q
I have a factory backup camera and am aware that I will have to buy another backup camera to replace that one. Can I still have the new backup camera installed in the same area? Can I use this camera without the piece on the bottom of the camera?
[ Stacey  Jun 19, 2016 ]
1 answer
A
From my experience, most likely yes. I was able to replace my 2008 Jeep Commander factory backup camera with this exact camera. Heavy modifications were needed. A lot of waterproof apoxy etc... The housing and camera are usually separate. The installer will need to remove the factory camera from the housing, modify the housing to fit this camera and remount the housing to the vehicle. Most reliable installers/fabricators will be able to to this. This camera has a great picture and I recommend it to anyone. Also please do not expect to plug a s play this into a factory head unit... You will need an aftermarket head unit as well unless your installer is an electronic genius.

Q
I looked at the wiring diagram in the manual for this camera and am confused how the camera knows when the car is in reverse and needs to turn the rear-view display on. Is there a wire running to the reverse light?
[ Brian  Jun 14, 2016 ]
3 answers
A
Hello Brian I purchased this Camera and just installed it. Yes you want to wire the Red positive wire to a connection that turns power on only when you are in reverse. either reverse lights or what I used was the wire connection on my neutral safety switch on shifter that turns power on to the reverse lights when in reverse. If you also look at you manual for I assume the stereo connection you will probably have a wire you will need to also connect to same location as the Stereo will also need to know when Car is in reverse to bring up the Camera. Do not wire to constant on ACC.
[ JOSEPH  Jun 15, 2016 ]
A
Your head unit that this is plugged into controls it.
[ ALLAN  Jun 15, 2016 ]
A
Yes, there is a wire that you connect to let the radio/camera know to switch the display on. My son and I installed this camera in his car and ran a wire to the reverse light to activate the camera when shifting into reverse. There are other ways to connect this wire closer to the radio but we found this option to be easiest for us. Be sure your radio supports a review camera option.

A

[ Shawn  May 25, 2016 ]

This camera does have to be connected by hardwire and is compatible with either of these receivers as they both have an RCA type rear view camera input connector.
[ Randall  May 20, 2016 ]
A
wired only
[ James  May 20, 2016 ]
A
This camera has the typical RCA video connection that will need to be physically connected to 1 of the 2 RCA video inputs that either receiver offers.

Q
On the Kenwood DNX692 do you have to wait until the unit is fully booted up to see the camera display? The DNX692 boots rather slowly and I am usually done reversing before the unit has booted up fully.
[ Greg  Oct 09, 2015 ]
4 answers
A
I have the DDX9902S and the Camera video works before the unit is fully booted up, this unit takes rather long to boot as well.
[ Timothy W.  Oct 12, 2015 ]
A
Yes, it take awhile to boot and won't work until then.
[ James  Oct 11, 2015 ]
A
No, with my Kenwood receiver the backup camera comes on immediately while the unit is still booting up, however, the guide lines are not displayed until it fully boots. I don't know if this is true for all receivers. On a side note, my reverse lights are enough to give a nearly full daylight display at night with this camera.
[ Dale  Oct 11, 2015 ]
A
Unit does not need to be fully booted to view camera - The R-Cam Interruption Setting in the camera settings needs to be set to 'On' and reverse wire activated - when in reverse the unit will immediately default to camera screen prior / during boot
