Screenus Maximus

So my Latin isn't so good, but the big 6.95" capacitive touch panel display on the Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S DVD receiver really is. You can access apps easily from your smartphone using Apple CarPlay™ or Android Auto™, and enjoy all kinds of radio, including HD Radio™, satellite radio, Pandora®, and iHeartRadio®. Apps on the big screen

  • Android Auto™: If you're an Android fan, you'll love how Android Auto integrates the Android platform into your driving experience in a non-distracting way. You'll have voice control access to Google Maps, weather, music, your phone, text messages, plus easy access to many of your favorite apps. Get more info at www.android.com/auto.
  • Android and iPhone mirroring: By connecting your Android or iPhone to the rear HDMI/MHL input on the Kenwood, you can display your phone's screen on the receiver's large display for better viewing. Check the "Details" section for the cables you'll need.
  • Apple CarPlay™: CarPlay integrates your iPhone® into the driving experience in a new, seamless interface, putting iPhone content at the driver's fingertips with minimal distraction. That means easy access to your music library, your phone, messages, navigation, and many third-party streaming music apps, too. Learn more at www.apple.com/ios/carplay.
  • Phone swapping: If your family includes both iPhone and Android users, you simply plug in the phone you want to use with this Kenwood without having to choose a particular input or adjust menu settings for control.
  • Siri Eyes Free: With your compatible iPhone, you can take advantage of Siri Eyes Free functionality with a touch of the receiver's touchscreen, using your voice to place calls, select music, hear notification, add reminders — even compose and listen to text messages.

Customizable display

You can make the touchscreen display fit your needs by choosing from a wealth of colors and backgrounds, letting you tailor the look to match your vehicle. This Kenwood plays video content in bright, clear detail when you're parked. When you're on the road, you can entertain your passengers by sending a movie from the receiver to a rear-seat screen. You can also plug in front and rear-view cameras to play it safe in crowded parking lots.

Built-in HD Radio

HD Radio

The DDX9903S lets you enjoy HD Radio from participating stations, so you'll hear FM that's close to CD quality or AM that comes in clear and static-free. And if you're not in an area with HD Radio stations, don't worry — this Kenwood's sensitive radio tuner will pick up local analog stations, too.

Get satellite and Internet radio

Using the controls on the receiver, you can access your favorite Pandora® and iHeartRadio® Internet Radio stations from your iPhone or Android. You can also check out the incredibly deep programming offered by satellite radio by adding a SiriusXM tuner

Additional music options

You can also satisfy your music fix by using the receiver's DVD/CD player and connecting a portable music player to the rear aux input. And the rear USB port can also handle a thumb drive loaded with MP3, WMA, and AAC music, as well as higher-resolution WAV and FLAC music files.

Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S DVD receiver

The 6.95" display offers touchscreen controls to run Android Auto.

Total tone control

The powerful built-in amplifier sends a crisp, clear signal to your speakers, while the 13-band graphic equalizer boasts Kenwood's Drive EQ feature — when the radio is playing at lower levels, it boosts frequencies in the music that are most affected by road noise. The built-in DSP (digital sound processing) with digital time alignment lets you zero in on your perfect sound, while the three sets of 5-volt preamp outputs deliver an ultra-clean signal for adding additional amps for more power.

iDatalink Maestro lets you keep your factory extras

If your vehicle comes with factory add-ons like Ford SYNC®, GM OnStar®, Chrysler Uconnect™, and VW's media interface, you don't have to worry about losing your favorite conveniences to get navigation and better sound — the DDX9903S offers compatibility you won't find in many other aftermarket radios, thanks to the iDatalink Maestro module (not included).

  • Ford SYNC systems: you'll be able to retain voice-controlled features, steering wheel audio controls, and factory audio functions;
  • GM vehicles: you'll keep your steering wheel audio controls, your factory amp, safety warning chimes, and OnStar;
  • Chrysler: you'll keep all your Uconnect functionality;
  • Toyota: you'll keep your factory amplifer, auxiliary and USB inputs, rear-view camera, and steering wheel audio controls;
  • Volkswagen: you'll retain the factory Bluetooth, the factory digital amplifier and fader, plus VW's media device interface.

The iDatalink adapter also lets you tap into your vehicle's diagnostic port, so you can check out expanded functionality including gauges, climate controls, a distance sensor, and tire pressure monitor on the receiver's screen.

Note: This receiver is fully compatible with iDatalink's Maestro Module. If you purchased this receiver prior to October 8, 2016, Kenwood's website now offers a firmware update which will restore full iDatalink compatibility. Apply the firmware to your Kenwood receiver for support of factory extras; reflashing the iDatalink Maestro module is not necessary.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

The Kenwood 9903 is easy to use and install. The Apple car play is also easy to use. The 6.95 screen is very clear and bright. I like the tilt screen feature and the Kenwood has added much better sound to my Camry system.

Pros: Sound equalizer, bright screen, quick power up

    Cons: None

    Major Dust Issue!

Troy from Beaufort, SC on 2/7/2018

    Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

First impression was, WOW, and now a year later, it could have been much better. It has collected a lot of dust behind the glass and it cannot be removed. Half the time I plug in my iPhone 7 it locks up and the screen goes completely black. I have updated the firmware hoping this would fix the issues and it has not. Apparently the DDX-9904s and DDX-9905s have fixed the screen and iPhone adaptability. I am going to wait for Crutchfield to start selling the DDX-9905s and get one of them soon.

Pros: Apple Carplay is great, when it works... Love the newer capacitive screen. Configurability of the unit is very intuitive.

Cons: Captures a crazy amount of dust behind glass. Frequent Carplay lockups and black screen requiring rebooting the unit. Screen can be too reflective and hard to see in the sun.

Unit is great, screen is glass and super vibrant. Screen backlight will go from very dim (night) to bright enough to be viewed on the sunniest of days with the sunroof open. Carplay works as it should.

    Pros: Screen Carplay

    Cons: None so far.

This is a great radio, there are a few things I have found funny with it but I am still playing with the settings. When on the vehicle info screen my tire pressure light on my dash blinks; my satellite radio and my car play were not playing well simultaneously. Other than that the capacitive screen is wonderful, sound has greatly improved from stock and is very visually appealing with in dash nav.

It's great when it works but there are a lot of little bugs with the one I got, I even updated the software on it. When you first turn your truck on it is random what screen it shows up on sometimes it's all black. Also it won't start playing music sometimes and sometimes it will. Not very impressed with kenwood I feel like I could have bought the cheaper Apple car play radio if I wanted all these bugs

Pros: Very good sound quality when it works.

Cons: It's expensive and there are little bugs with mine unit I got

Description of unit can be misleading. Make sure that unit actually does the function, and not just mirroring your phones functions. The quality of the unit is good, but most of the functions, that I was looking for, the unit either did not come with or uses my phones' functions. Not really useful if you don't have your phone with you. Unit didn't come with a backup camera, another function I requested. I had to order a camera, several times, to get one that worked, adding more time spent for delivery. All the delays and misled features equal yet another B-day gift up in smoke!

The options on this unit make this a great choice for the audiophile in all of us. I am able to time align and tweak each speaker in my car to get the desired sound I want. My amps love the 5 volt preamp signal and it's unclipped up to max volume using the RCA outputs. Was able to stream video content via HDMI using an Actiontec wireless dongle as my S7 doesn't support MHL connections but this is better because it's cordless and the quality is 1080p. Good stuff. This is a great unit and I'm only giving it a 4 star rating because the equalizer is just a graphic band and not parametric. If you're going to market your Excelon units for sound quality then finish the job.

Pros: Great picture, easy and big icons to push, capacitive screen is just like a cell phone screen with great responsiveness, time alignment is key for tuning, wireless streaming for Netflix,Hulu,Amazon, etc... like the title reads, almost perfect.

Cons: Graphic EQ instead of parametric

    So many issues....

    2015 Hyundai Elantra

    Verified customer (What's this?)
    Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This is an awful unit. The Android Auto is terrible. It simply will NOT recognize voice commands properly. I say "ok google, send message" and it asks to who. I tell it and it asks, SMS or Hangouts. I say SMS and it says "SMS or Hangouts" over and over and over and over again. Same if i say Hangouts. Sometimes i can say "ok google, sent text message" and it asks who, i tell it, it asks what the message is, i give the message and then it takes 10 tries to get it right as it's getting so much wrong. I took the car back to the installers and they moved the microphone. That didn't help. i've emailed Kenwood several times, and all they say is to take it to the dealer. It has the latest firmware, that's not the issue. The newest issue... i play a CD and then go to Android Auto and WAZE. When the CD is done, i eject, put in a new one and the screen goes black. And it stays black. I can go to the radio, satellite, etc... and that's fine, but the moment i got back into Android Auto apps... black screen. Only fix, pull over, reconnect my phone (Galazy S7 Edge) and then it all comes to life again. If i stop the disc from playing before turning off the car and then use remote start the next morning... the cd starts up. So then i have to start it over. Why? It should not auto start. Only solution is to turn it to TUNER before turning off the car. I don't want to have to do that. I should not have to do that. Ithere's more, i'm out of space

    Pros: Sounds nice

Cons: android auto, voice recognition, cd player in conjunction with android auto, USB ports, EMS broadcast, Satelite preset channels limited to 5 IF using steering wheel controls, and so much more. This radio is awful and Kenwood/JVC simply does not care. A high end, high priced, mistake.

First, I want to call out kudos to my advisor Bob for answering all my questions (which were numerous). Ultimately I went with this receiver over another for two reasons - 1) Larger screen (9.75" vs. 9.2") and 2) Apple car play. The larger screen is achieved by placing the CD/DVD media slot behind the display which tilts out to reveal when you want to insert a disc, so the display gets nearly the entire double-DIN real estate. A major concern was reviewers giving Kenwood receivers low marks for display washout in bright sunlight. Not my experience with the DDX 9903S. I have no problem viewing the bright screen in full sunshine. Dual USB ports (female connection that will take any standard USB male cable) make connecting devices easy; only one is Apple compatible. Love that custom photos can be uploaded and used as display backgrounds. I also love the variable angle screen tilt which makes it a lot more comfortable to operate the receiver from the driver's seat and it remembers your preference when powering on. Apple play can be somewhat finicky. I can't say if this is an Apple play thing or a receiver thing. I've read others have the same issue on other receivers. It will randomly lose connection with my iPhone 7+ and I have to turn the receiver off/on to get it to reconnect. It doesn't happen all the time, just occasionally. Love Apple play for music and phone features. Physical buttons are easy enough to operate and all located along the bottom. SiriusXM is great.

Pros: Large bright display Apple play Customizable backgrounds Variable tilt display SiriusXM ready

Cons: Apple play can be finicky Wish the HOME (on/off) button was illuminated when powered off to make it easier to find in the dark. Wish the display would auto dim in darkness

So far, I really like this receiver! The display is crystal clear and very vivid and the menus are very intuitive. The install was very simple and the setup took very little time. I installed this in a 2007 Silverado Classic 2500HD with the basic (non-Bose) stereo system. Before installing this head unit, I was planning on replacing the OEM speakers. However, after putting this Kenwood in, I will probably keep the OEM speakers until they die. This unit makes them sound amazing and the digital processing is unreal! Even poorly compressed songs from 10 years ago sound great playing through this head unit. My one complaint is the lack of an automatic dimming function. This is probably related to my specific vehicle and not the head unit. At night, the display is very bright and can be distracting. However, the controls make it VERY easy to either: 1. Turn off the display completely or 2. Turn the backlight down. Either of these options are accessed with two button pushes. I also paired this with a rear view camera and it is great. Very easy install and the picture quality really surprised me.

Pros: Very nice imaging Great display

    Cons: No automatic dimmer

The DDX9903S is packed with features like CarPlay and android auto. It's also has a really good built in amp that far exceeds the sound quality of my factory radio. There were even little features like customized screen angle which helped in my corolla installation and later use. This baby has everything you need except built in navigation but that's moot if you use the maps on your phone because you navigate from the touch screen. Get it! Great value packed with awesome features.

Pros: Packed with almost every feature and has a really crisp quality built in amp and sound output integrating nicely with your cars speakers

Cons: Did not have built in navigation (but I knew that and use the maps offered through car play so no biggy)

    Mostly good, couple of annoyances

Had it for 2 weeks now. Seems like a decent product, although it does have some issues and annoyances. The big one for me is it seems like there is something going on with the microphone. Sometimes it works, other times it just doesn't. I feel like it may be an issue with the microphone itself. The other minor annoyances are that you cannot disable unavailable sources. So now I have a bunch of stuff in the sources list that does me no good. Other stereos I have owned in the past allowed me to disable them. It also seemed a bit weird to have the unit come with a GPS antenna that its sole purpose is to set the clock. Other than those issues, it's been great. Android Auto works perfectly. OK Google works well (if the microphone is working). The touchscreen is responsive and smooth unlike other stereos I have used in the past. I got it on sale, which was worth it. At the regular price, I would have felt like I didn't get good value.

Pros: Good value at the sale price Responsive Capable Looks nice Android Auto

Cons: Bad value at retail price Microphone issues Lots of unused inputs clutter the sources list

The system did not fit my Ford 2013 F350. When I purchased the unit I talked to two different sales people and they both agreed and recommended 'this unit. I took the stero to my ford dealer for installation. After two hours. Of taking out my old stero and trying to put this unit in, they admitted defeat. I called you tech department and after several conversations and exchange of pic of my stero the tech agreed it was uncapatibale and issued a return slip. This process took all day and plus the time to recieve a refund. This is not the expertise Inexpected from Crutchfield.

We're sorry about the mix-up with the Kenwood stereo and your particular F-350. It appears that even though you informed us you didn't have navigation software you used with the factory Ford setup, your factory radio was the navigation radio. And we don't recommend a radio replacement for this version of this Ford. One of our Tech Support gurus, Michael, tracked this down while setting up the return for this customer.

I got this headunit because I needed an audio upgrade really bad. I just bought a 2018 Subaru WRX, and the stock sound system is the worst I've ever heard. I got this one specifically because I'm a fan of Kenwood stereos and speakers, and it has Android Auto (which is the best thing Google has ever made). Installation was easy (as I expected) with all the supplied instructions and adapters that Crutchfield supplied. I actually ended up using the stock radio brackets, because they fit, and they're metal instead of the plastic ones I got. I put the aftermarket mic in the factory location, and retained the USB port in the console for charging a device, not that I'll ever need to. I ran a high quality USB cable into the interior because this is the only way Android Auto works - I had a LOT of fun trying to work out the kinks with this. One thing I'd like to point out is that if you plan on using Android Auto, you'll have to install the update from Kenwood's website on this, using a USB thumb drive. A lot of reviewers said that the screen sucks because it gets sunwashed very easily. It does a little bit, but I don't think that it's as bad as many depict it to be. The sound upgrade is phenomenal. There are SO many settings to play with and I've tweaked them to get my music to sound clear. And the more powerful amplifier sure helps too. Overall I'm very satisfied with this receiver.

Pros: Easy to install, owner's manual is very helpful Android Auto works great The audio is fantastic

    Cons: None whatsoever

Lots of options and USB stick with songs popped right up. iPhone initially did not connect but after some reading online, realized you need to use a 'proper' Apple branded lightening cable. I have been using the DDX9903S for about a month and am very disappointed. I agree with a lot of the 2 and 3 star reviews. It's certainly not the upgrade I was looking for. For the money, I would look elsewhere. Kenwood does a good job with sound but everything else is subpar. -Android Auto and Carplay can only use one usb port. I use both with my car. I would have preferred having them run on either since the cables are different. -Screen Brightness. At night the screen is fine. Daytime is iffy at best. There are times when the screen is totally washed out. Not exactly good when your trying to look at directions. Fingerprints don't help much. There should have been an ambient light sensor with the ability to adjust brightness manually at this price point. The funny thing is there is screen adjustment when mirror casting (MHL..many newer phones don't support this) but none for everything else including AA and Carplay. Maps in AA and Carplay look washed in day mode even when there is no glare. -Radio Menu - Totally cluttered and ugly -Spotify does not work...Pandora is fine. -Bluetooth- Only 3.0 ??. Pretty old standard for a stereo this new. The main issue I have with the bluetooth is Kenwood claims "Allows two phones to be connected for hands-free operation at any time." This is not true. As soon as you connect Carplay or AA, Kenwood disables the other phone on bluetooth. -Drive warning won't time

Pros: -Sound Quality -Sound adjustments (if you use them)

Cons: -No Screen brightness adjust -No ambient sensor -Washed out display in AA/Carplay -Dual USB (not really dual) -No Spotify -Second phone drops with AA/Carplay -Ugly Radio interface -Drive Warning timeout -Price (Value)

I have owned this unit for almost a year and my experience with it has been outstanding! it fulfills every function I was hoping to get flawlessly as far as bluetooth, dvd/disc, usb and Android auto play-ability is concerned ( the main sources I truly constantly use). The transition between menu screens and the response out of this machine is just superb, it definitely feels like the much needed upgrade from older units of its kind. Finally, I cannot express my fondness of this unit without thanking Crutchfield for their amazing customer service in helping me when requesting help in trying to find the most suitable car harness for my vehicle and relaying maestro related information so that I could still keep some of the features my car already offered. Going from a factory and basic unit on my Jeep didn't think getting this head unit would make much of a difference but I was in for a pleasant surprise. The sound is crisp and clear on all sources and being able to customize it with the EQ has been a lot of fun. Now I can turn up the loudness and my speakers don't sound distorted or muffled. I choose Kenwood over Pioneer because the interface looks more colorful and brighter, built in compass and dancing EQ levels. Was able to retain most of my factory features except factory aux port which I never used anyway. Had a hard time installing at first but tech support was great in guiding me through the install. Only slight negative is that the stereo screen will not dim when using the dash dial. The screen is too glossy and reflective when driving but easily solved by installing a matte anti-glare screen cover that I bought on ebay. Now it's perfect. Replacement of factory speakers will be my next project!

Pros: Attractive interface. Works great with Android Auto. Great EQ features. Impressive screen responsiveness and clarity.

Cons: Fussy to download phone contacts into receiver.

This HU has been stellar. This was the first car stereo and it went in completely without a hitch, and I couldn't be more pleased with the hardware or with Crutchfield's sales team. The Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S is, as I understand it, identical to the Kenwood DDX9703S except that is has a capacitive touchscreen display instead of the 9703's Clear Resistive touchscreen display. In my opinion, worth every sent. Thanks so much Crutchfield! One note: There are TWO USB cables, one reads "IPOD/IPHON" and the other just reads "USB". Android Auto works through the "IPOD/IPHON" cable, since that's the data cable. "USB" appears to be charge-only, but I'm still glad it's there!

Pros: Crisp Audio Clear screen Easy install Simple interface

Cons: Data cable mislabeled "IPOD/IPHON" confusing for Android Auto users.

Back in April I purchased a Kenwood DDX574BH along with a backup camera and associated harness and bezel for my 2013 Mazda MX5. Yes this review is about the DDX9903S, thats because once I saw the 9903 had the capacitive touch screen and Apple CarPlay I realized the 574 just wasn't cutting it. The exact things that were bugging me about the 574 were improved on the 9903. Yes the 9903 is more expensive but I drive that car almost everyday and with the level of phone integration with CarPlay, the responsiveness of the capacitive touch screen & faster processing, to me its was well worth the cost difference. There is almost no delay when swiping or touching to get a response on the unit. Its almost as good as the phone. Unfortunately the CarPlay function does not allow the pinch-zoom on maps but that just a slight inconvenience. The home screen layout is nice with the large clock and "Whats Playing" graphics/album art on the other side. Even on the CarPlay screen the entire background is a fuzzy version of the album art. The bluetooth connection is more reliable ... in this case everything is just "that" much better so in this case you do get what you pay for. The 9903 also supports Android but being an Apple guy I can't comment on that ... but I just wanted the Android folks to know they are not forgotten :) I do need two get more used to Apple Maps (Im a Google maps fan), since it is integrated with CarPlay. I am happy with this unit. I should have pu

Having had Kenwood Excelon products in the past made it easy to choose this model. Unfortunately, the Carplay is constantly having issues (stuttering, screen locking, not connecting, disconnecting, etc), which does not happen in OEM Carplay units. Also, the iDatalink Maestro thing randomly assigns actions to steering-wheel controls, rather than how I had programmed it. The screen is also a fingerprint magnet and highly glossy, making for a combo impossible to read in any sun, at any angle (though some vehicle radio locations may not have this issue). These issues have been highly frustrating and overshadow the good (for myself and my wife) that this unit has to offer.

Pros: Sounds great. Responsive. Looks great.

Cons: Carplay is utter disappointment. Screen is horrible in sun.

IMPORTANT - when attempting to utilize Apple Car Play/Android Auto, make sure you are using the CORRECT USB plug! Only one supports that intention, and it is marked on the USB plug body! Also, you must unplug your phone from the USB to play videos from USB stick or disc (copy protection feature). Response times have been vastly improved, latest firmware fixes the early issues. PROS: Too may to list, but Android Auto is a major plus, as well as overall screen-touch and boot response times. Screen size is top of class. CONS: Screen is very prone to sunlight washout. Miracast is not built in, but Belkin makes a small adapter that plugs into any HDMI port to add the feature to any deck.

Pros: Bluetooth performance is excellent Dual cameras, dual USB and dual Bluetooth phone capacity Android Auto is a major plus Screen touch and boot response times Screen size at nearly 7" is top of class

Cons: Screen washes out easily in sunlight Must disconnect phone to play video from USB or disc File-name list sorting options are severely limited No Miracast

This head unit was a great upgrade from the factory stereo in my 2016 Subaru Impreza. I thoroughly enjoy the capacitive touch screen, CarPlay, sound quality, and many of the other options available with it. However, I was expecting a "true morroring" experience with my iPhone. After installing and tuning some, I researched and realized that I would need a HDMI cable to stream or play videos. I then purchased and installed the recommended Kenwood cable. After the fact, I learned that it isn't compatible with the Kenwood remote app nor many iPods. Overall, I'm happy with it and would purchase again.

Pros: Capacitive touch screen, CarPlay, multiple USB cables, adjustable LED lighting, sound quality, responsiveness, equalizer

Cons: Not a true mirroring device for iPhone and not compatible with Kenwood remote app or many iPods. Only one of the USB inputs is iPod accessible

I really like this deck since I am now able to have front & rear cameras that can be viewed at any time. I like the Apple Carplay idea but wish Apple would support more applications than they currently do. The deck was easy to install. Works as promised. I am able to select from numerous sources and it is very responsive in switching between all sources. I have a 1TB portable hard drive attached to USB port which is very fast at selecting audio & video. I went with iDatalink Maestro to attach Kenwood to my 2017 Jeep Wrangler steering wheel controls.....it works perfectly and can not be any happier.

Pros: Multiple cameras, bluetooth, Apple Carplay, fast response when selecting sources, excellent radio, mirroring capability of smartphone, equalizer has amazing adjustment

Cons: I was expecting 'true' mirroring capability so I could use deck to control my iPhone. That appears to be the case for Android smartphone but not with iPhone. However, I can mirror anything on the iPhone screen but I can not use the Kenwood deck to control iPhone from the touch screen....I have to use iPhone's touch screen.

It has many Pros and more Cons. Sound quality is great but my largest complaint is screen completely washes out if ANY sunlight hits it. To the point I am currently looking to replace my new stereo for something usable. Android Auto is a complete joke now but not the fault of the system. The sound quality during phone calls is impossible through Android Auto connected(wired) but if I go straight BT it improves. I can hear both ways but nobody can hear me through Android Auto. What the heck! I like the hidden DVD player because it keeps the dirt out. I love the stereo as long as I am sitting in my garage or driving at night but since I drive this car for a living it STINKS because the display is unusable on the road. If it wasn't for the display it would have got 5 stars

Pros: Sound quality and features. Customization is awesome and I love the ability to load my own background photos

Cons: DISPLAY - DISPLAY - DISPLAY! I am blown away at the idea that Kenwood thought this was even remotely acceptable.

Gave up on 2014 Mustang factory hu/DQ-61/6XS, noise floor was too high and DQ-61 time alignment ability is limited. Chose the 9903 since I wanted Carplay and don't care about nav. Also the new Alpine equivalent hasn't been released yet, which looks a little better, but may or may not sound as good). I kept the 6XS for 4-way setup. Had to install the Maestro MUS-1 dash replacement kit to make it work (hu now controls the a/c). Noise floor is very low compared to previous setup. The EQ and time alignment functions are good enough that I don't feel I need a DSP. Sounds awesome to me! The display looks and feels pretty good, although I wish it was as good as a phone. Manufacturers, if you're listening, make this happen and I will buy it. Icons are a little silly. I wish there was more customization available (icons, font size, text displayed, etc). But it could be worse... Overall I would not go back to previous setup. The sound upgrade is night and day. If only it looked a little more tasteful/OEM I would give it 5/5.

Pros: Sounds very good; 6 ch 5V preouts, 13 band EQ, and time alignment. Fairly fast boot time.

Cons: Wonky Icons, relatively low res display, minimal customization of look/feel of display. I really miss having a volume knob.

I've had this stereo for a couple of months and I'm wondering why I waited so long to upgrade my stock unit. It was a little tricky to get installed (I had my engineer friend help, a lot). I paired this with a back up camera and it works exactly as it should. I typically use a USB stick to listen to my music but the radio and bluetooth work flawlessly. The USB is only in the back and you cannot use an extension. It would have been better to have a dedicated USB port on the front of the unit like my other single DIN Kenwood. The only con is that everytime you start the car, you get a warning message about using the stereo during driving that you have to click agree on every time.

Pros: Intuitive navigation with lots of options. Great Sound Room for expansion

Cons: having to click agree on the warning message on start up No USB slot on front of unit

My criteria seemed simple enough: double DIN, good touch screen, 4v pre-outs (front/rear/sub), Android Auto support, SD card slot, NO built-in navigation, good media player. This unit strikes most of those checkboxes, with the exception of the SD card slot and the media player (which is horrendously bad). It also excels at my pre-out requirement with 5v! Instead of an SD card slot, there's 2 USB ports. They're hidden in the back, and only one of them can do Android Auto (or Apple CarPlay). This head unit WILL NOT accept USB hubs!!! This renders the USB ports nearly useless. Older Excelon models could handle USB hubs! With one port dedicated to my phone, that leaves one non-expandable port for storage. Because it's at the back of the head unit, that means I can either attach permanent storage directly to it (which I can't easily remove to edit the contents of), or route that port to somewhere else in the car like the glove box. How hard would it have been to add one or two SD card slots under the CD slot? Considering the cost, the lack of SD card slot is a cheap cop-out. The media player is a horrific joke. I have TONS of high-res music. I can't sort it by artist, album, genre, or anything. The only sorting option is by filename within a folder. There's better media players available FOR FREE for my phone, even my $150 portable DAP can do better. Kenwood couldn't be bothered to develop something worthwhile for a product that's designed to play music?!? It boggles

Pros: Great sound quality from the 5v pre-outs. Good built-in sound processing options. Android Auto support that works flawlessly every time (for me). 2 USB ports. Good quality screen. Lots of built-in customization options. Very expandable.

Cons: NO memory card slot!!! (this annoys me to no end) No front USB port, they're all hidden in the back. No USB hub support (if I'd known that ahead of time, I would not have bought this head unit). Miserable media player with NO ability to sort by artist, album, genre, etc. Could never get Mirroring to work with any of my devices.

I would have given this HU 5 stars.Except there is dust piling up behind the glass capacitive display. This stereo is near perfect. I've experienced none of problems noted in other reviews. Apple car play launches flawlessly on everything startup with my iPhone 6s Plus. Giving you navigation, without having to shell out the extra four hundred bucks on the Garmin unit! Paired up with a JL RD900/5 amplifier. JL C3-570 components up front, C2-570 coaxcials in the rear, and a JL CS112lg-tw3 power wedge sub to round things off. My 2010 F250 has never sounded better!!

Pros: Awesome sound quality Capacitive display, with ultra fast operating system 13 band equalizer to dial in the music, the way you like it Apple car play

I purchased this as my second "Carplay" head unit coming from the Pioneer AVIC-8100NEX on a different vehicle. Wasn't a fan of the lay out of the Pioneer, and since Kenwood has a great rep, wanted to give it a shot. I have to say I have a mixed review of this unit. The touch screen is crazy responsive, just like a phone. Menu layout is easy to follow. Display is very clean and crisp. Now for the disappointing part. I can only get car play to launch about 1/3 of the time, and when it stops, it stops dead. Using the exact same phone and cable combination, it launched each and every time on the Pioneer. I've read other reviews on this and other sites with people having the same problem since the head units launch. The other negative is there are no hard buttons on the front to advance to the next tract. You have to use the button on the touch screen. That's fine if you are able to look at the screen every time to make sure you hit it in the right place, but often you can't while driving a car. It's a lot more useful and safer to have a physical button to hit using muscle memory. I really wanted to like this unit, but I'm calling customer service and exchanging for the Apline iLX-107 which is currently on pre-order.

Pros: Crazy responsive touch screen Menu Layout easy to follow Set up very easy

Cons: Carplay only works about 1/3 of time No hard buttons on front of unit to advance/back track.

The capacitive touch is a huge improvement over traditional resistive touch. Overall this is a very good unit, but there are still improvements that can be made. The screen needs an ambient light sensor to adjust brightness independently of the dimmer lead that is actuated by the headlights, currently I have to turn the backlight all the way up manually during the day, and all the way back down for night driving, (yes, I have the dimmer lead connected correctly); In future versions this should be automatic and seamless. I installed this in a 2006 Chevrolet Corvette with factory Bose speakers and amp. The system sounds good, but I do not recommend using any of the advanced audio options on the Kenwood if you have a GM vehicle with a factory Bose amp, due to competing adjustments that are made by the Bose amp. If you are using conventional amps or directly powered speakers, I'm sure the Kenwood audio options are great, though. I find the software to be very stable, the September 2016 firmware update seems to have worked out most of the problems mentioned in previous reviews. I have never had any connectivity problems with my Galaxy S6 using Android Auto, it seamlessly connects when the USB is plugged in, I have never had to reconnect the device to get it working. Other things to be aware of - if you are used to a volume knob, having volume buttons may take some getting used to, ideally this unit would be used with steering wheel controls.

Pros: Android Auto, Capacitive Touch, responsive interface, excellent audio quality.

Cons: Poor screen dimming, limited voice controls, optical disc drive is unnecessary, some background feedback during GPS audio prompts,

In the age of capacitive-touch cellphones there's no reason to get a dated resistive touch headunit. Quick to start up, responsive, lots of customization options and settings. OBD-II gauge support (via iDatalink Maestro RR). Tons of audio settings and a big EQ. Android Auto works well and you can select between CarPlay and Android Auto if, say, your wife insists on Apple products but you have an Android. Installed in my 2014 WRX. In that car, with the "JDM" radio bezel you do not need the Metra mount. You can use the brackets off the OEM radio and the JDM bezel (Part #66065SC130) for a more factory look. There is also a USB adapter (Metra AXSUBUSB) that can allow you to use the OEM USB port in the center console. I plan to route and hide the ugly Kenwood mic in the stock mic location (next to the map lights). Came with latest firmware already installed so no issues like other users had.

Pros: Capacitive touch. Resistive touch is so 2006. Lots of options, settings, customization Pandora and Spotify app Bluetooth options Android Auto CarPlay Parking brake wire can just be grounded

Cons: Heavy Rarely the screen jitters while swiping "I agree" screen has to be dismissed every time Some of the screens could use some more UX work, but not a surprise in the DVD receiver world.

I waited for almost a year for this unit to come out. Screen mirroring from my phone and Android Auto were two of the main reasons. Android has eliminated that idea. No fault of Kenwood but has killed many of the reason for my selection. Although Kenwood still advertises full support, they use the little known or used mira- LINK (NOT Miracast) which has no market share or compatibility due to its limitations and no support. Needless to say I am extremely disappointed. We did connect it Car play(Apple version) and it worked flawlessly the manual is thicker than most college books. The setup has been a daily struggle. I had the unit installed because I wanted to keep my steering wheel controls and I am glad I did. It was a nightmare for the professionals that I have used before and had great faith in. I don't think I am welcome back due to the struggles. Now for the good- Everything Else! As far as the stereo features, HD, XM, DVD and iMaestro are second to none! EQ is endless. A really nice touch is allowing me to add my personal pics as backgrounds and only that seconds to change. Friends are impressed when they get in and find themselves in the display. The sound quality is over the top and now finding myself thinking about speaker upgrades to do my system justice I am taking off 2 stars from my review because Kenwood Does Not support all the apps.

Pros: Sound and Video quality is over the top, customization is unlimited

Cons: New Android phones limit the system so caution should be used and check compatibility before buying. If your phone is over 2 years old and not using the latest operation system you should be fine Having to press to close "consent" notice Every time I start my car is beyond Stupid. (No way to turn it off!)

I installed this in a 2016 Toyota 4Runner along with a Maestro RR, XM tuner, new speakers, and a compact subwoofer. Sound quality was my #1 priority and the Kenwood sounds fantastic! The unit was shipped with the latest firmware update so many of the problems mentioned in previous reviews were non-issues. I love the GPS heading on the home screen. The screen is sharp and responsive. CarPlay works flawlessly. My list of dislikes is short and minor. When I press volume up, it repeats until it reaches 15 and then I have to press it 1-by-1 to increase the volume further. Some of the screen layouts are overly crowded (e.g., XM screen has menus that pop-out from both sides). I can't turn off input sources I don't use (like DVD playback), which means I have to scroll through a bunch of sources when using steering wheel buttons to advance through them. The screen can be hard to see in direct sunlight. The only time it has been an issue is with the sunroof glass open and the sun directly overhead. The screen is always fine when the sunroof glass is closed, but the shade/cover is open. I thought I would miss the big volume knob from the factory stereo, but I don't. Overall, it was easy to install, sounds great, and the interface is intuitive (for the most part). I really wish Kenwood would make this stereo without the DVD player and other video playback options and charge less.

The Kenwood DDX9903S works as advertised and is an awesome product. I was especially impressed with sound quality which is much better than the stock radio in my Ford F-150 even with the stock speakers. Can't wait to hear this unit with JBL speakers I plan to install. Also the picture quality is excellent and the capacitive touchscreen is great. This unit boots quickly and the rear and front view cameras work great and is a very important part of the safety features of the truck. Android Auto works flawlessly and I love the fact that I now can use Google Maps for my navigation, Google play music, HD radio, and most of the features of my Samsung S-7 phone.

Pros: Great resolution, fast start up, great sounds, front and rear view cameras, capacitive touchscreen, ability to do Android Auto and Apple Car Play.

Cons: Hard to see screen in daylight, warning screen doesn't time out

We have a DDX9902S in our Tahoe. The DDX9903S we installed in our Silverado has some very nice improvements. The sound quality is much better. The clock now captures satellite clock ticks making the time very accurate. No more setting the time on the radio. When the radio switches from HD radio to analog the delay in music processing does not exists. Only problem the we have is the phone and Siri volumes are very low. When using either the radio volume must be increased to hear phone calls or text messages. Navigation from the IPhone is getting better. The navigation issue is an Apple problem and has nothing to do with the radio. Installation was very easy. The directions suggest cutting a dash support. The support does not need to be cut. Routing the wiring which takes a few extra minutes eliminates that step. Over all we are very happy with both of our Kenwood products.

Pros: Great sound. Clock is updated via satellite. Backup camera comes on even while the unit boot up.

Cons: Warning screen does not time out.

Overall I am very pleased with this unit. Kenwood seems to be actively improving firmware to fix bugs that it released with. As of the 15.09.2016 firmware update, there are still a few minor bugs to work out which are easily worked around. Originally the clock failed to keep timezone information. The update has fixed this. Also, the compass originally failed to work, it now generally does. It picks discrete directions (N NW W SW S SE E NE), but appears to be based off of GPS movement so don't expect it to be accurate while standing still. I personally don't care much about these feature anyway, you may. Others have mentioned a buzzing from the stereo when not playing audio. As of the current firmware this has not been fixed, however, the effect is very minor. I also suspect this is due to using an external amplifier and not the built in speaker outputs though I haven't tested the two. In my case, I am using the line output to the factory BOSE amplifiers in a Nissan 350Z. I suspect the control line to turn the amp on keeps the amp running even if there is no signal on the line outputs and you pickup noise in the amp. For me, this was very minor and not a big deal though I would like to see it fixed. There are some annoyance built into android auto that is not in the stereo's control, but in android's. There is a minor but thought, if you start map guidance without other audio, sometimes it can't play notifications. Playing and pausing audio fixes this. Overall great product.

Pros: Great Sound and Digital Signal Processing capabilities. Very customizable. Awesome sensitivity on the capacitive touchscreen.

Cons: Not many, few minor bugs even in the latest firmware regarding Android Auto. See Description for details.

I have it connected with Android auto on two phones (one at a time) and both are recognized immediately without any action on my part. Sounds great as I would expect from the Excelon line of Kenwood. Lot's of custamization available, maybe too much as it takes a bit of time to adjust all of the settings. looks great and sounds great. Highly recommended.

This deck is a very nice deck! It's fast, its user interface is great, sounds great, love the EQ and crossover setup, Android Auto is cool, everything about this deck is awesome! But I only gave it 3 out of 5 stars. Well, it's got 2 USB ports, I was hoping to be able to use the main USB port for my phone and use Android Auto for navigation, text to voice, all that stuff, and use the second USB port for my iPod, and listen to my music at the same time. Can't do it. I might have been able to transfer all my songs to a large flash drive, and have that on the second USB port, or transferred all my music to my Android phone, but that wasn't my goal. So, anytime I wanted to use my iPod, and switch to my phone, or vice versa, always had to keep disconnecting and switching the USB cable connections, luckily, was easy enough, left the cables in my glove box, but still an inconvenience, and I couldn't do what I wanted to. Also, that capacitive touchscreen is very nice, smooth, great resolution, super sharp display. But with that glass front, it's very reflective. I would get a lot of glare on the screen. Driving during daylight hours, tough to see the screen with the glare and reflections, and if you wore sunglasses, forget about it. So, driving during the day, the screen was useless. I couldn't see it without trying to look at it under my sunglasses. Night was no problem, and was very nice actually. Ordered a Pioneer AVH-4200NEX instead.

Pros: -Sharp Resolution -Fast -Sounds Great -EQ/Crossover settings -Front Facing Camera Button -Capacitive Touchscreen

Cons: -Screen Glare -Can't See in Daylight -Have to switch between Android and iPod for USB -Have to always acknowledge warning screen, will not time out.

The Kenwood DDX 9903S is very close to what I was looking for for my FJ Cruiser. I mainly wanted an Android Auto HD for Google Maps, Google Play Music, and Audible. This unit does the job very well. The 9903S loads up quickly, usually before I have the car in gear. Android auto then loads up a few seconds after I press the mirror button or the mode button on my steering wheel so music or my book is ready by the time I am heading out. The screen was a big selling point for me and I am glad I held out for a capacitive touchscreen. It is very responsive and works well with dragging around maps in Google Maps. The included mic is clear and works well with the voice commands provided with Android Auto. The included GPS antenna has also improved my GPS reception with my phone noticeably. While I have reviewed every input option and feature on the HU I really do not use many of them. Switching between inputs is simple to accomplish with the UI but I wish I could omit the inputs I do not intend to use so that cycling through them would be quicker. You can however choose your 3 favorites and drag them into omnipresent positions on the home screen. The UI for browsing an attached drive is clumsy and does no organization of the media using the metadata of the media. Plan to browse folders in a less than intuitive format and make sure your media is organized by folder. Video streaming from a drive worked without issue for the 2 codecs I tried, mp4 and avi.

Pros: Great Android Auto Interface Sounds excellent Bright screen with great touch control Every input you might imagine needing Mic and GPS antenna are of good quality No connection issues

Cons: Home screen layout would benefit by allowing users to turn off some features like the Album Cover art that is almost never used Cluttering the UI with inputs a user does not intend to use is frustrating UI for browsing attached media is difficult to navigate

I bought this for the Android Auto feature. So far it only works 30 seconds at a time I cannot get google maps to work, audio only works for 30 seconds and then freezes. So the clock never has the right time or date, sounds many other people have discussed this. I do have a request to add the length of the song and some soft of indicator of where you are in the song (a count down, count up, bar graph with a line that progresses as the song plays). When playing music through USB or Bluetooth there is no length of the song or count down or any indicator where you are at in the song. Love how much you can customize the look and interface. The backup camera works flawlessly. The sound this unit puts out is fantastic.

Pros: Customization of the interface and the sound. The Bluetooth works great. Lots of input options

Cons: Android auto does not work as advertised, clock does not stay as set, needs a counter for mp3 music.

Couple of issues but not bad. 1) Clock- Temp fix is to set to Pacific Time and adjust manually to your time 2) having an issue with the 08/26/2016 firmware update from Kenwood. Cannot get the files unzipped on Windows 10-n supposedly, this update fixes the clock issue, compass issue and several others. To be honest, my only issue was the clock. Will update when I figure out the Firmware Update

Pros: Like all the versatility 1) Android integration 2) Sirius 3) HD Radio 4) CD 5) DVD 6) USB 7) Bluetooth 8) 7" screen I can see and make calls off of with out my readers 9) Runs Google Maps Radio, and Phone Simultaneously. Mutes music when calls incoming/outgoing.

Cons: Kenwood has an attitude regarding their responsibility towards this product. Was told by their Rep to send it back to Crutchfield or one of their service centers for the Firmware update. Even though this is a two month old unit they are not responsible for updates. They cant possibly know what glitches will arise in the field. Yet, its ok for them to suggest I take the unit out of the car after installing it because they dont want to take the time to properly instruct me on the process.

I just installed this today, and it is a definite improvement over the Alpine X008U I was using previously, I like Apple Car Play, the dedicated front camera input, screen, and overall responsiveness of the unit. I'll refrain from making the same comments about the clock and other bugs people have mentioned in other reviews since they affect my unit as well. Two things I've noticed: 1) when using Car Play, I can't use a USB extension cable to the outlet in my console. It will recognize the phone, and play audio, but won't display the Car Play screen; instead, it'll show a grey screen with two lines across it. Plugging the cable directly into the unit's iPhone port makes it work perfectly. 2) There is noticeable hissing when the iPhone is plugged in. When I unplug the phone, the hissing goes away. Not sure why this is as the unit's properly grounded and I'm using an Apple cable. I'll post more as I use the unit more.

I had the Kenwood 9902s but it never worked right. No one could hear me on the phone and Android auto only worked about 25% of the time. After about 10 contacts with Kenwood's tech support, my local shop offered to exchange it for me to the 9903s. The 9903s is a BIG improvement over the 9902. Unfortunately it is still a waste of money. I haven't been able to fully test it, because the unit crashes and restarts often. At first, it was every few times I drove my truck. Today it was every 30 seconds! Another problem with the 9903 is the clock does not work. It's a known problem, but still..... Fix it Kenwood. What I will say positive about the 9903, is the screen is much nicer than the 9902. Also, it has 2 USB ports and a front camera jack. It could be a great unit if Kenwood put in the effort to design a radio that worked. I guess that's not going to happen!

I patiently waited almost 6 months for Kenwood to finally release this unit. And despite the fact that the clock resets itself every time you turn the car off, the compass always points to North, and there is a bunch of white noise/static very noticeable during quiet passages, I still really like this unit. Kenwood says they are aware of all three and promise a software update to fix them soon. I'll give them until October and if they fix it I'll be very happy. If they don't, back to Crutchfield to swap for a Pioneer. Now to why I still really like this unit. The display is amazing. Bright, rich, beautiful. And this thing is lightning fast and highly responsive to the touch. Zero delay. The sound quality is very good and the digital signal processing is amazing. I can move the sound stage around my car and get it exactly where I want. Fantastic! The GUI is easy to read and understand. The menu structure is fairly intuitive, but not perfect. The implementation of CarPlay is perfect. Nicely done. I can't tell you whether you should buy this now or wait until Kenwood fixes these annoying issues. But for me I am willing to temporarily forgive these issues because the rest of the package is really, really good.

Pros: Beautiful Capacity Touch Screen Display Very Responsive - Lightning Quick Response Amazing Digital Signal Processing. Digital Time Alignment, Stage EQ adjustments Sharp, intuitive GUI

Cons: Clock resets itself every time you turn the car off. Compass is frozen to North. White noise/static during quiet passages.

Not ready for release yet even after 6+ months of delays waiting on CarPlay. Basic functions like the Clock and Compass do not work. Clock will not stay set to the correct time and the Compass does not work at all, always points North. I also purchased the Idatalink Maestro and the unit has issue with it as well. Uconnect volume is too low to hear and the gauges are not accurate. All this is known by Kenwood and they have no release date of when a firmware will be updated to fix these issues. All the other reviews are accurate as well, the fonts are way to large for the screen and just a lot of wasted space. The Android Auto worked most of the time but did freeze up half the time using Pandra and Google Maps. Due to these issues and no release date of a firmware I sent this back to Crutchfield.

When things work as they should, it's awesome. It has all the right features, looks great, and Google Maps beat static Navigation maps hands down. Unfortunately, it seems a little buggy to say the least. Sometimes when starting the vehicle the unit goes back to where it was when the car shut down. Sometimes it goes back to the startup screen. Sometimes it just goes into the "standby" screen. When the radio was the last thing used, and it comes back up when you start, it doesn't show the preset it was on although the last station played is playing. Jumping around the menus takes more steps than it should when doing simple things. The UI for the radio is terrible, with huge fonts. The most irritating is the Amber Alert feature. It's a good idea, but when an alert is broadcast, when "snooze" or "ignore" is selected, it doesn't matter what I was doing previously it goes to a radio frequency with no station and my truck is filled with static. Making it worse, when I was running errands, it did this every single time I started the vehicle (showed the alert then when acknowledged the unit played static. While the review is on the negative side, there are many things I enjoy about the DDX9903 which is why I rated it 4/5, but Kenwood really needs to sort out some of their sloppy functions. A unit with so many nice features shouldn't display such bad manners with some of its functions.

    Pros: Nice looking, great features.

Cons: Android Auto and some of the menu functions are a bit buggy or poorly thought out.

I had been lurking the internet on android auto receivers since late 2014 (when they didn't exist yet) and finally decided on pulling the trigger on this 2nd gen kenwood unit. I had previously had a pioneer appradio (1st one that worked with androids, 2 i think?) I liked the kenwood due to the integration via ODB for tire/door/etc integration. So far my experience has been very good other than I had Android auto freeze on me a couple times shortly after starting the vehicle on very hot (90+ F outside with windows rolled up sitting in sun) days... after the car cools down a bit (5-10 minutes) it stops doing it, so I assume it's temperature related, and only have had it happen twice. I have a Nexus 6P, Android Auto setup was pretty flawless. Download app, plug in phone, everything works. Did the install with the iDatalink Maestro R, and got the SiriusXM module. The install went smoothly other than awkward placement on the reverse wire under the dashboard on the passenger side (not any fault of the stereo of course) and everything worked following the directions as stated.

Pros: Android Auto!, more useful features than other AA units I looked at, Bluetooth configured itself automatically when I plugged phone in for Android Auto, pretty screen, has been pretty speedy/responsive for a car stereo compared to other touchscreen units i've used

Cons: A bit expensive, possibly some heat issues causing some weird functionality glitches?

I had a pioneer before that didn't work with my Nexus 6 Android phone. So I gave that to a friend with an iPhone and got this Kenwood. Was so happy it worked with my phone, I can't mirror due to Nexus not having that option, but the Android auto app works well. Still have more to learn but for the most part everything was easy to figure out right away.

Pros: Works with Android, Bluetooth connects and stays connected

Cons: Expensive, everytime I turn it on it pops up with a thing that says I take responsibility of using safely or something like that and I have to hit close not sure if I can get that to go away, not huge deal only takes a second

This system really woke up the factory Bose sound system. The audio is amazing. The screen is bright and responsive. Now the reason I dropped a star from my rating...the instructions are terrible. The unit comes with instructions bundled for many units and only brielfy discusses Car Play and Android Auto. From what I understand the iPhone is plug and play as Kenwood really built their system around it. For Android Auto with you Android phone make sure to use the instructions received from Kenwood technical support after pulling a few teeth and banging my head against the wall. My pain is your gain: Please verify the Automotive Mirroring is set to ON. Simply select SETUP, AV, and AUTOMOTIVE MIRRORING ON. You may then connect your phone via USB to the IPOD USB terminal and select ANDROID AUTO as your source. If you have been following these steps, I recommend that you try a different USB cable. (Samsung phones not supported, just ignore this feature) In order to use the Mirroring source, the Automotive Mirroring must be set to OFF. Connect a compatible device via Bluetooth and with the HDMI cable and MHL adapter. You may then select SETUP, AV, APP/IPOD SETUP, and select HDMI/MHL. Please verify the phones support HDMI/MHL. (Samsung phones not supported, just ignore this feature) Some bugs to work out. Compass not updating (firmware update soon)

Pros: Great sound and Display. Great support from Crutchfield.

Cons: Poor instructions, difficult support from manufacturer. Some bugs to work out. Compass not updating (firmware update soon)

    Touchscreen & Remote Control

6.95" Capacitive Touchscreen: The Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S features a 6.95" widescreen (16:9) capacitive touchscreen LCD with LED backlighting. The capacitive touchscreen LCD provides a high contrast ratio, crystal clear display, and vivid text. The LCD touchscreen has a resolution of 800 (H) x 480 (V) x RGB with 1,152,000 total pixels. The capacitive LCD touchscreen is highly responsive with touchscreen operations that include tap, tap & hold, flick left/right, and swipe up/down. The monitor electronically slides down for loading or ejecting a disc. The bottom of the touchscreen monitor can be tilted upward at six different positions to provide the best visibility in your vehicle (you can save any one of these positions to the head unit's memory).

    • Custom Home Screen & Shortcuts: You can customize the head unit's Home Screen by rearranging the icons and moving the icons of the seven most sources you use most to this screen. Three programmable shortcut source keys offer a quick jump to your favorite sources
    • Background Images: You can choose between six preset background images or download your own still image (800 x 600) for use as the unit's background from a connected USB thumbdrive.
    • Picture Adjustments: During video playback, you can adjust the touchscreen LCD monitor's backlight, contrast, black level, brightness, color, tint, and aspect ratio (Full/Normal/Auto/Original).
Note: To prevent the display of video while the vehicle is in motion, the light green wire (attached to rear chassis) must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. You cannot view video unless your vehicle's parking brake is engaged. If you attempt to view video without the parking brake engaged, the unit's LCD touchscreen will simply display a blue screen and "Parking Off". While your vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the head unit's menu screens/settings, source information, metadata, and album artwork; as well as CarPlay, Android Auto, and Mirroring.

Front-Panel Controls w/ Variable Color Illumination: In addition to the touchscreen controls, the unit includes frequently used buttons along the bottom edge of the screen. You can adjust the head unit's button illumination, as well as display background color from the following preset colors - Blue, Purple, Sky Blue, Aqua, Yellow, Green, Amber, Red, Pink, White or Scan (Scans through all preset colors). You can also select a custom "User" color that is adjusted between Red, Green, and Blue (values range: 0-31). You can save up to 3 custom color presets. The Kenwood logo and eject button remain red, regardless of variable color illumination setting.

Dimmer: The dimmer function will dim the head unit's display & front-panel illumination automatically when your vehicle's light switch is turned On, if you have the unit's orange/white "Illumination" wire connected to your vehicle's headlamp circuit. You can also choose to dim the display manually. The Kenwood logo and eject button remain the same brightness.

Clock & Date: The DVD receiver offers a 12-hour clock & day/month/year display. The clock is visible from any source or menu screen. With your vehicle's key in the accessory or start position, the head unit will continue to display the LCD background image, clock, and button illumination during "Standby" mode. Pressing and holding the Power/Home button turns the unit off completely.

Remote Control: The Kenwood DDX9903S offers compatibility with factory steering wheel controls (adapter sold separately) and is compatible with Kenwood's IR wireless remote control (sold separately) for added convenience.

    • Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow) within the included wiring harness that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately).
    • Optional Remote Control: The optional Kenwood KNA-RCDV331 IR wireless remote control (113RCDV331, sold separately) unit is designed to operate this Kenwood DVD head unit. The wireless remote controller operates off of two supplied "AAA" batteries. The remote operates off of IR transmission so the KNA-RCDV331 must be pointed at the front-panel of the Kenwood head unit within direct line of sight.

Security Indicator: The Security Indicator feature helps to protect the Kenwood DDX9903S against theft. Turning this function "On" allows the security indicator light (red) on the front-panel of the head unit to flash when your vehicle's ignition is off.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S is equipped with built-in Bluetooth 3.0 allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.6 (Hands Free Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile), GAP (Generic Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.3 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.5 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S. Visit Kenwood's Support Site for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

Multi-Device Pairing w/ Dual Phone Connection: You can pair up to ten Bluetooth-enabled devices to the Kenwood head unit with a maximum of two Bluetooth phones and one Bluetooth audio player connected at one time, making it easier to switch between devices. When a paired Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically connects the two units.

    • Secure Simple Pairing (SSP): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings.
    • Auto Pairing (for iPhone): You can even pair your Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+) by simply connecting it to the Kenwood head unit via USB and following a single prompt on the head unit's display.

Hands-Free Communication w/ External Mic: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. Thanks to the latest Hands-Free Profile (HFP 1.6) with wideband speech capability, the Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S provides more natural sound quality and details during wireless calls. The touchscreen controls of the DDX9903S can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers (All or Front only). During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering a Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. You can answer the call from the head unit's touchscreen, or setup the head unit to automatically answer the incoming call immediately (1-30 seconds).
    • Dialing a Number: Using the DDX9903S, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:
      • Entering a Phone Number: Allows you to directly dial a phone number from the head unit's touchscreen keypad.
      • Preset Dialing: Allows you to register up to 5 phone numbers for quick dialing. The preset numbers can be accessed from the head unit's touchscreen.
      • Phonebook: You can download phonebook data (up to 1000 entries) from your phone to the DDX9903S. You can then dial by using the downloaded phone book and search it alphabetically.
      • Call History: The Call History is a list of calls that have originated from and were received by this unit that you can dial. You can select Outgoing, Incoming, or Missed calls (up to 50 entries total).
      • Voice Dialing: If your mobile phone supports voice recognition, then you can dial out by voice command. Simply speak into the included microphone.
Note: This unit allows you to answer a call or dial out using any option without engaging the vehicle's parking brake.

Wireless Audio Streaming : The Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone or audio player, plus song/artist information display and support for AAC lossless music streaming. You are able to stream your stored music library on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, as well as music apps downloaded on your smartphone to the Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S for playback.

    • SBC & AAC Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the DDX9903S offers support of AAC codecs for higher quality audio streaming from select Apple devices. By supporting AAC, the DDX9903S offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
    • Advanced Music Playback: In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat), the DDX9903S lets you browse your stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, etc. (AVRCP 1.5+ phones only).
    • Song/Artist Information: The head unit will also display your stored music and music app's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title (not compatible with all apps).
Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control: When paired and connected to an iPhone with Siri via Bluetooth (not USB), the Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. Simply press-and-hold down on the head unit's "VOICE" button to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the DDX9903S and its microphone. You can even ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone with Siri. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

Note: The head unit's LCD touchscreen will only display hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

    iPhone Integration w/ CarPlay

Apple CarPlay Compatible: Apple CarPlay is the smarter, safer in-vehicle interface to operate your iPhone (iOS 7.1+) with Lightning-connector. Your iPhone must be connected to the Kenwood receiver via the Lightning-cable that came with your Apple device or Kenwood's Lightning connector-to-USB cable (113KCIP103 sold separately). CarPlay features Siri voice control and is specially designed for driving scenarios. It also works with the Kenwood receiver's touchscreen controls. Use CarPlay to get directions, make phone calls, listen to voice mail, send/ receive messages and select music in a way that keeps you focused on the road ahead.

    • Maps: The power and simplicity of Apple Maps comes to your dashboard; complete with turn-by-turn direction, traffic conditions, and estimated travel time. CarPlay can also predict where you most likely want to go using addresses from your email, text messages, contacts, and calendars.

You'll be able to listen to stored music and music apps on your Lightning-connector Apple device through the Kenwood DVD receiver. Note: You will need to select which type of connection method you are using in the head unit's setup menu.

iPod/iPhone Control: In addition to audio/video playback, the Kenwood DDX9903S supports control, song/artist information display, and battery charging of your compatible Apple device.

    • Head Unit Control: The Kenwood head unit allows you to navigation your iPod/iPhone's music library from its front-panel & touchscreen controls. The head unit offers unique search features like Category Search & Link Search, plus offers basic playback functions like Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind, Previous/Next Track and Repeat/Random of your connected iPod/iPhone. You'll also still be able to control most connected Apple devices from its own touchscreen while connected via USB.
      • Category Search: Cateogry Search allows you to navigate your iPod/iPhone's music library by Playlist, Artists, Album, Song, Genre, Song, Podcast, Audiobook, or Radio. You can then search each of these categories using the head unit's touchscreen slider function (categories will be listed in alphabetical order).
      • Link Search: The head unit offers Link Search, which allows you to play songs related to the currently playing song. Link Search lets the head unit create an album list of the currently playing artist, a song list of the currently playing album, a artist list of the currently playing genre, or a album list of currently playing composer.
    • Song/Artist Info & Album Art: The DDX9903S will display your iPod/iPhone's stored music information including Track number, Elapsed playing time, Song/Album title, Artist name, and Album art. The unit will also display song/artist info and album art from select music apps.
    • Battery Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1.5A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

iPhone Mirroring via HDMI: The Kenwood receiver will mirror the display of your HDMI/USB/Bluetooth connected iPhone (iOS 9.0+) device. You'll be able to listen to audio from stored music and music apps, watch video from stored movies and movie apps, and view navigation apps on your iPhone iOS device through the Kenwood receiver. Connection method is based on your type of iPhone. If you have a newer iPhone with the Lightning connector, you will need Apple's Lightning Digital AV adapter and Kenwood's Lightning-to-USB cable (or Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your device); if you have an older 30-pin iPhone 4S, you'll need Apple's 30-pin AV adapter, the 30-pin-to-USB cable that came with your device. In addition, for both types of iPhones, you will need a a mobile-grade HDMI cable; such as the Kenwood KCA-HD100 (all sold separately). This type of connection also requires Bluetooth pairing. The HDMI connector provides the audio/video playback, while the USB connection charges your iPhone device. The Bluetooth connection allows you to continue to take Bluetooth phone calls.

    • Mirroring of your mobile device does not require that your vehicle's parking brake be engaged.
    • Mirroring of your device will not always appear in full-screen on the Kenwood unit's touchscreen display.
    • You will continue to use your iPhone's touchscreen for control; the head unit's touchscreen does not support control.
    Notes:

    Audio & DSP Section

Excelon Series: The DDX9903S DVD receiver is part of Kenwood's Excelon series line-up. It incorporates the latest technologies and delivers the highest sonic performance. From advanced audio tuning capabilities, crossover and equalizer system, high-voltage 5V preouts, plus a two-year warranty - Kenwood Excelon represents exceptional audio quality with long-lasting dependability.

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality with a Signal to Noise ratio up to 98dB.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the DDX9903S are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)

DSP: In order to optimize the sound quality, you can use the unit's DSP to set the type of vehicle, speaker sizes & locations, listening distances, and x-over points. You can also choose to bypass the head unit's DSP feature.

    • Listening Position + Digital Time Alignment: Select your optimal listening position from All, Front Left, Front Right or Front All. You can also select to manually fine tune the sound stage, using Digital Time Alignment (DTA) by selecting the distance (0-20') for each individual speaker in the vehicle compared to your listening position. The Front Focus feature even lets you localize the sound image in front of a selected seat (Left or Right).
    • Car & Speaker Type: Indicate the type of vehicle and the size of your vehicle's speakers, plus their location inside the vehicle.
      • Car: Select your car type - Compact, Full Size Car, Wagon, Mini Van, SUV, Mini Van (Long) or Off.
      • Speaker Size: Independently set the Front & Rear speakers to OEM 3.5", 4", 4.75", 5", 6.5", 6.75", 7", 4x6", 5x7", 6x8", 6x9", 7x10", or None. You can set the Subwoofer to 6.5", 8", 10", 12", 15"+, or None. Set the Tweeter to Small, Middle, Large, or None.
      • Speaker Location: Set the location of the Front speakers to Upper Door Area, Lower Door Area, On Dash, or Under Dash. Set the location of your Rear speakers to Upper Door Area, Lower Door Area, Upper Cargo Area, Lower Cargo Area, Upper 3rd Row Area, Lower 3rd Row Area, or Parcel Shelf Area.
    • High Pass & Low Pass Crossovers: Allows you to set high-pass and low-pass crossovers for a Front, Rear, and Subwoofer speaker setup.
      • Front & Rear: Independently set high pass filter (HPF) for your front & rear speakers.
        • Frequency: 30Hz, 40Hz, 50Hz, 60Hz, 70Hz, 80Hz, 90Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, 150Hz, 180Hz, 220Hz, 250Hz, Through (Full-Range)
        • Slope: -6dB, -12dB, -18dB, -24dB
        • Gain: -8 to 0 dB
      • Sub: Set low pass filter (LPF) for unit sub output.
        • Frequency: 30Hz, 40Hz, 50Hz, 60Hz, 70Hz, 80Hz, 90Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, 150Hz, 180Hz, 220Hz, 250Hz, Through (Full-Range)
        • Slope: -6dB, -12dB, -18dB, -24dB
        • Gain: -8 to 0 dB
        • Phase: Reverse (180°), Normal (0°)

Equalizer: The Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S offers 8 EQ Presets for east adjustment, a 13-band EQ for customized tuning, and a Drive EQ mode to overcome road noise. Separate EQ settings and EQ presets can be stored for each source or you can apply one EQ preset or curve to all sources.

    • Preset EQ: The integrated equalizer offers 8 preset sound modes (Flat, Pops, Easy, Top40, Jazz, Powerful, Rock, or User 1-4) suitable for the music genre of your choice.
    • 13-Band EQ: The User modes (1-4) allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 13-band EQ (62.5Hz, 100Hz, 160Hz, 250Hz, 400Hz, 630Hz, 1kHz, 1.6kHz, 2.5kHz, 4kHz, 6.3kHz, 10kHz, & 16kHz). Each frequency's gain level can be adjusted from -9dB to +9 dB.
    • Drive EQ: The Drive EQ mode helps you hear your music over road noise. It boosts certain frequencies ranges that becomes hard to hear due to road noise.

Music Enhancement: You can restore the sound lost due to audio compression, as well as enhance the sound by virtually manipulating the soundscape.

    • Sound Realizer: When MP3, WMA, or AAC files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Realizer feature boosts low frequencies which can be lost during compression. Set to Level 1, Level 1, Level 3, or Off.
    • Supreme: When MP3, WMA, or AAC files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.
    • Space Enhancer & Stage EQ: You can set the Space Enhancer to Small, Large, or Off. Each setting value indicates the soundscape level. You can also virtually raise the sound position heard from your speakers; the Stage EQ can be set to High, Middle, Low, or Off.

Volume Level & Bass Management: The DVD receiver offers several volume level adjustments to tailor the audio output of your sources. The DDX9903S also provides bass management to get the most impact out of your system.

    • Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to +6.
    • Dynamic Range: The dynamic range can be adjusted by selecting either Normal, Wide or Dialog. Dialog makes the total sound volume become larger as compared with Wide and Normal, allowing you to listen to the movie's dialogue more clearly. This is effective only on Dolby Digital software.
    • Bass Boost & DC Extension: The DDX9903S features a four-step Bass Boost (Off/1/2/3) to enhance your music's lower frequencies. When "Bass DC Extension is turned on, frequencies lower than 6.25 Hz are set the same gain level as the unit's 7-Band EQ 62.5 Hz gain setting.
    • Loudness: This function enhances low and high frequencies to make the sound clearer lower volumes.

Source Beep: The in-dash receiver provides an audible beep to confirm source selection. This function can be turned On or Off.

    AV + OEM Connectivity

AV Input: The Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S DVD receiver is fitted with a rear-panel minijack (3.5mm) audio/video input to connect external AV sources, such as a game system, Blu-ray player, or TV tuner.

HDMI/MHL Input: In addition to iPhone and Android Mirroring, the head unit's HDMI/MHL input can be used to connect almost any external mobile AV source with an HDMI output; such as a TV tuner, Blu-ray player, or game system. The HDMI input will provide video and audio playback. Your vehicle's parking brake will need to be engaged to view video on the receiver's screen. Playback functions will need to be controlled from your HDMI-connected device.

Note: There is a bracket on the back of the receiver that will need to be removed to access the HDMI input. The bracket can be reattached to the back of the unit once you have plugged in your HDMI cable (sold separately).

AV Output (with Dual Zone): The unit features a composite video jack and 3.5mm audio jack to output AV signals to an optional monitor and headphone system. The unit's AV output can be set to Disc, AV-In (not HDMI), or Off. Volume of the second zone can be controlled by the DVD receiver or your rear entertainment system.

Rear & Front Camera Inputs: The unit features a composite video input for connecting an optional rear view camera, such as the Kenwood CMOS-230 (113CMOS230, sold separately). By connecting a rear view camera, you can use the in-dash receiver's touchscreen LCD to see what's behind you when backing up. There is also a composite video input for connecting a front dash-cam (sold separately), so you can display what's ahead of you on the head unit's touchscreen LCD monitor.

    • Parking Guide Lines: When a rear-view camera is connected and you are viewing a rear view image, parking guide lines appear on-screen making parking easy and safer. There are three color-coded horizontal guidelines and two vertical guidelines.
    • Rear-View Auto Switching: The video from this connection can be set to display when switched to this input, or display the rear view camera video automatically when the vehicle is shifted into Reverse gear. The purple/white wire of the wiring harness must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching. Automatic video switching takes approximately 0.8 seconds.
Note: The rear view camera feature is meant as a back-up aid only; never solely rely on the rear-view camera when backing-up. In addition to using the rear-view camera, always look behind you to make sure everything is clear when backing up your vehicle.

GPS Antenna: The Kenwood head unit comes with a GPS antenna to enhance the performance of CarPlay and Android Auto navigation maps.

OEM Integration: This Kenwood DVD receiver is compatible with the iDatalink Maestro RR (794ADSMRR, sold separately); a web programmable module that will permit the aftermarket Kenwood receiver to work with select Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles that feature the factory SYNC system; as well as select GM vehicles with factory OnStar; select Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicles with U-Connect, select Volkswagens with factory digital amplifier, and select Toyota/Scion vehicles.

    • Retained Features: The iDatalink Maestro RR lets Ford/Lincoln/Mercury, GM, Dodge/Chrysler, and VW owners swap out their factory radio for this aftermarket Kenwood head unit; while retaining the Ford Sync system, GM OnStar system, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep U-Connect system, steering wheel controls, Bluetooth, USB interface, Satellite Radio, and 911 assist. You also get to keep the hands-free mic that comes with the car (which is specially tuned to that particular vehicle). *Retained features will vary by vehicle.
    • Extra Features: In some installations, the iDatalink Maestro RR lets you configure the head unit to operate interior climate controls and provides extra visual data; such as User Selectable Gauges, Vehicle Info (Tire Pressure/Battery Voltage/Check Engine Codes/Door Ajar Warning), and Visual Park Assist. *Extra features will vary by vehicle.

Note: The iDatalink Maestro RR is web programmable, which means you'll need to flash the iDatalink Maestro RR interface module with the correct firmware from iDatalink's website. In addition to flashing the iDatalink Maestro RR module, you'll also need a vehicle specific harness (sold separately). The Kenwood receiver's OEM Setup menu must also be configured with your compatible vehicle's factory system before initial operation.

I had been looking at iOS compatible OEM stereo replacements for a couple years now - Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine, Sony, JVC. Narrowed it to Kenwood or Pioneer - the others often cost more and just don't offer the same combination of features (less for more is rarely good). I went to the local Fry's to have a little hands on with the receivers. I found the Pioneer interface to be very cheezy and unintuitive - hard to navigate. So, Kenwood it is! [ Keith  Apr 28, 2017 ]

Android Auto. Has loudness feature which the Pioneer AVH-4200NEX does not have. Big disappointment that Pioneer removed that feature from some of their flagship receivers. Nice to see Kenwood still has a loudness feature which has brought me over from being a die-hard Pioneer customer. [ Finkster  Mar 18, 2017 ]

I wanted to fully take advantage of the features my android phone offers while drive with a system that feel more built in than a phone hanging off the dash in a phone holder. This solution is much cheaper than buying a new car and with Android Auto will out preform most propitiatory navigation systems that come built in these days. I liked that the Kenwood comes with GPS antenna that the phone can use when connected, so just plug the phone and stash it in the glove box out of sight. [ Jonathan  Aug 22, 2016 ]

You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.

Have not tried that because it defeats the purpose of why I use it. If your running nav and using the phone you need the display on. I believe you can dim the display .The nav automatically goes into night mode at dusk

    [ Sheri  Sep 25, 2017 ]
    1 answer
    A
Our odyssey doesn't have the DVD player in the rear so I can't say for sure. But the unit is very flexible so I would think that it would. You can contact kenwood customer support directly by phone, they can give you a definite answer. I've called them in the past with product questions. they were very helpful.

I was looking at the pic of the rear of the radio trying to find the USB port. What type of USB port is the input? A, B and male or female?
    [ Daniel  Sep 16, 2017 ]

    A
Both USB ports are on 18-24 inch pigtails as is the HDMI input. They are all female, so you can use your standard charger cable etc. If using iPhone I recommend getting the HDMI mirroring adapter. It's a neat gadget that displays whatever is on your phone on the head unit. Great for videos for "not" the driver.
    [ James  Sep 17, 2017 ]
    A
The USB port on the back of the is a proprietary connection from Kenwood. However they supply you with a cable that plugs into that port and supplies you with 2 standard female usb female ports. Look at the last picture of the radio on the crutchfield site that shows the back of the radio with all of the cables attached.
    [ Elwood  Sep 17, 2017 ]

I have no clue. What I can tell you is that there are two ports. Each port has a cable that comes out through the dash. One let's you plug in a usb device and the other acts as a quick charger for your Android or iPhone ( with correct adapter) It also connects your phone to the head unit for use with the Android Auto app.

Works great for me. I have a 2013 Jeep Wrangler and have the mic mounted at the center of the dash against the windshield. Was going to just be temporary, but works good enough to leave it there

I own a 2004 Mazda Miata. I had the mic installed on the steering wheel cowl in front of the speed/tach ... it faces me w/in 24 to 30 inches. I drive with my top down going 80 and can hear and talk .. I do have to turn it up, obviously, but I also have focal speaker system, and JBL sub behind my driver seat. Overall, I am incredibly pleased with the system, and would HIGHLY RECOMMEND it .. I do a LOT of business in my sports car on this thing.

I also had an older Kenwood head unit and this was one the reasons I upgraded. I would say overall the microphone works better. No glass hallway sound and usually very clear (kids shouting from the back seat aside). I would recommend this head unit to anyone. Good luck! -DG
    [ Andrew  Aug 29, 2017 ]

My answer may only be of marginal help. I mounted my mic on the steering column. I rarely make calls in my car and I don't think I have *ever* heard someone in a car who did not sound like they were in a 'glass hallway'. That said, the few times I've used it for calls I did not get any complaints for lack of clarity from the other side. It is definitely better than the native iPhone mic with my phone mounted on the dash at roughly the same distance from the driver's seat as the Kenwood mic. My guess is that the Kenwood mic night perform even better if I mounted it in the typical spot near the visor - but I just don't use it enough to spend the time dismantling my molding to get it there. I do use SIRI on a fairly regular basis, though. This mic does a pretty good job of picking up on my commands, and even commands from my daughter from the back seat. Can't say much for SIRI's accuracy, however ;-p ThIs headunit takes a standard mic input. If the factory mic isn't up to par I imagine you could get a higher quality mic that would plug right in.

Michael the Microphone works great. I have never had a single complaint from anyone. I fitted the unit to my Ram 1500 truck and I located the microphone in the A pillar around the height of the sun visor. I hope that helps.

    [ Thomas  Aug 19, 2017 ]

The 9903 isn't a nav receiver. There are no maps included (so no updates necessary or usable). The GPS antenna is for the purpose of helping CarPlay or Android Auto do navigation. The one other useful feature is the 9903's GPS radio keeps the clock set accurately in the 9903.

I dont know of a kenwood specifci lightning cable but I do use OEM/aftermarket apple lightning cables. Best bet over car play is to order the Apple HDMI adapter and use HDMI mirroring. This allows your entire phone to be displayed on the screen rather than what Carplay limits. Great with YouTube and and other video/movie apps you may have. Carplay is extremely limited on what it displays on your screen and I prefer Google Maps over the native maps app found on iphones.

C J, I don't have Android, but it works exactly as you describe using Car Play. You can navigate anywhere and the last source keeps playing until you change it. Turn-by-turn, text messaging, alerts, etc... all voice over the top of whatever music source you have playing. You can adjust the volume of the turn-by-turn (or whatever) independant of music source. Hope this helps a little.

If you attempt to view video without the parking brake engaged, the unit's LCD touchscreen will simply display a blue screen and "Parking Off". While your vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the head unit's menu screens/settings, source information, metadata, and album artwork; as well as CarPlay, Android Auto, and Mirroring." You will find this information, and more, by clicking the "Details" tab on the stereo's main webpage and scrolling down below the "Features & Specs" table. I hope that helps! Will this unit play video through the HDMI with my Samsung Galaxy S7 phone? If so, what cable and/or adapters do I need?

I have an apple phone but yes it does play video and audio through the HTML cable. The cable for the android is a little different then the apple. and the android device must support HTML out. The only issue i had was that the radio's touch screen would not control my phone when connected via HTML.

This unit has a standard sized HDMI input on the rear. According to the manual you'll probably need the Kenwood KCA-MH100 cable (I'm not familiar with what connector your Samsung uses).

will this unit allow for me to attach a Dock-type Sirus radio and operate it from the touch screen?

Sorry, no. The Kenwood is SiriusXM capable though so, you can add the compatible hideaway tuner package to control and display the service on the unit's touchscreen: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_220SXV300/item.html I hope that helps! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5

Does album art work with USB? Actually, has anyone plugged in a USB to confirm that it does. The manual states that it does. My Pioneer does, but the pictures have to be a certain size and formatted a certain way. I've bought a head unit before that said it did, but after being installed, it did not show any album art.

If you are buying music from Apple or Amazon it should work fine but if you're ripping songs from YouTube or getting music from friends you would need to attach the album artwork to the file.

Yes. Album artwork attached to the file tag information properly will appear in on the Kenwood's display when playing the files from USB. I hope that helps! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5

On your website you state that the Kenwood DDX9903S has a 2 year warranty. After purchasing the unit, I notice in the owner's manual that it is only a 1 year warranty. So does that mean Kenwood covers the first year and Crutchfield is covering the second? Or is the 2 year warranty on your site a typo?

The Kenwood manual covers several different stereo models from their line (DDX9903S, DDX,9703S, DDX6903, DDX6703S) some of which are standard line models with a 1 year warranty, while the others are Excelon series (Including the DDX9903S) which do have the 2 year Kenwood warranty. I'm not sure why they do not provide separate warranty info for each model in the manual but I can assure you Kenwood will cover the DDX9903S for any warranty issues within the first 2 years. (As it's one of the primary difference in the Excelon line): http://www.crutchfield.com/Product/CompareTo.aspx?compareItems=01|113DDX9703&compareItems=01|113DDX9903&g=168550 I hope that helps! Q
Can I mirror my iPhone on the screen of the DDX9903s through the HDMI (so I can run Google Maps instead of Apple Maps)?
    [ Omar  Jul 08, 2016 ]
    1 answer
    A
Yes: "iPhone Mirroring via HDMI: The Kenwood receiver will mirror the display of your HDMI/USB/Bluetooth connected iPhone (iOS 9.0+) device. You'll be able to listen to audio from stored music and music apps, watch video from stored movies and movie apps, and view navigation apps on your iPhone iOS device through the Kenwood receiver. Connection method is based on your type of iPhone. If you have a newer iPhone with the Lightning connector, you will need Apple's Lightning Digital AV adapter and Kenwood's Lightning-to-USB cable (or Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your device)" You will find this information, and more, by clicking the "Details" tab on the stereo's main webpage and scrolling down below the "Features & Specs" table.
