You can't go wrong with the Kenwood Excelon line, well-known for their quality parts and build, and backed by a 2-year warranty. This Bluetooth®-equipped DMX905S digital multimedia receiver makes old school media easy to retire by giving you Apple CarPlay™, wireless Android Auto™, and popular apps like Waze® via WebLink™ — all on a big 6.95" capacitive touchscreen. Plus, Kenwood lets you incorporate both a backup and front-view cam.

Enjoy Android Auto™ wirelessly

Thanks to built-in Wi-Fi®, you can enjoy the benefits of Android Auto without connecting to the DMX905S via USB. That's convenience on top of convenience, considering all the good things the Android-based interface lets you control with your voice, like Google Maps, Waze, weather, music, your phone, and text messages. Plus, get easy access to many of your favorite apps — find out more at www.android.com/auto. Note that you can also use Android Auto with a wired connection via USB if you'd like to keep your smartphone charged.

Connect your iPhone via USB

Love using Siri? Apple CarPlay integrates your iPhone® into the driving experience, putting iPhone content at the driver's voice command with minimal distraction. That means easy access to your music library, your phone, messages, navigation, and many third-party streaming music apps, too. Learn more at www.apple.com/ios/carplay.

WebLink™ for iPhone and Android

Get your Waze® on with WebLink. With your smartphone connected via USB, WebLink gives you simple in-dash control over that navigation favorite as well as other apps like YouTube®, and Yelp®. What's especially nice is that WebLink works with both Android and iPhone.

Easy streaming and calling with Bluetooth®

Pair two phones via Bluetooth with this Kenwood receiver for dedicated, hands-free calling. You can also wirelessly search and select music files stored on your phone. With your compatible iPhone, you can take advantage of Siri Eyes Free functionality to place calls, select music, hear notifications, add reminders, or even compose and listen to text messages.

Play your high-res music files

You listen to your high-res music collection at home, but what about in the car? Load your FLAC or DSD music files onto a thumb drive and plug it into the DMX905S's second rear USB port for easy playback. A rear aux input gives you the option of playing from an older portable music player as well.

HD Radio

Even more music options

Using the controls on the receiver, you can access your favorite Pandora® or Spotify® Internet Radio stations from your iPhone or Android. You can also check out the amazing array of satellite radio programming by adding a SiriusXM tuner.

And with the built-in HD Radio™ tuner, participating AM/FM radio stations sound better on this receiver. Plus, you'll have 20 station presets to get to your favorites quickly.

Two USB inputs

Connect two devices to the DMX905S for charging at once. Or use one USB input for connecting your smartphone for Apple CarPlay or WebLink and the other to turn your old MP3 player or thumb drive into a permanent audio source.

All the tools you need to perfect your sound

Kenwood's Drive EQ tool make it a snap to adjust your sound to overcome road noise. Use the 13-band graphic equalizer, time alignment tools, and other special Kenwood sound tools to maximize the audio signal sent to the powerful built-in MOSFET amplifier. Three sets of 5-volt preamp outputs deliver an ultra-clean signal for adding additional amps for more power.

Don't forget the video

This Kenwood receiver plays video content in bright, clear detail when you're parked. When you're on the road, you can entertain your passengers by sending a movie from the receiver to a rear-seat screen.

Dash cam ready

Add Kenwood's DRV-N520 dash cam (not included) gives you a next-level vehicle experience by adding HDR-enhanced video recording of the road ahead and an assortment of driver assistance features like forward collision and departure delay warnings.

Front- and rear-view, too

With two camera inputs, you can also install front- and rear-view camera and use the receiver's built-in parking guides to back up safely in any crowded lot. The touchscreen lets you adjust the viewing angle for the best possible off-axis viewing.

iDatalink Maestro lets you keep your factory extras

This Kenwood offers compatibility you won't find in many other aftermarket radios, thanks to the iDatalink Maestro module (not included). In a wide selection of vehicles, this module lets you keep factory features that you'd otherwise lose when you install a new radio. You'll also be able to check out engine performance data and other vehicle info on the Kenwood's screen. Once you've identified your vehicle, you'll see the iDatalink module offered on the way to the Shopping Cart if it's compatible.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Excelon Series: The DMX905S digital media receiver is part of Kenwood's Excelon series line-up. It incorporates the latest technologies and delivers the highest sonic performance. To ensure the best possible sound quality, the receiver uses custom-made and carefully selected parts; such as audio quality power supply capacitors, high quality coupling capacitors, and gold-plated 5V pre-outs. These parts are further optimized through meticulous tuning of the component values and circuit paths. Kenwood's Excelon series represents exceptional audio quality with long-lasting dependability, and is backed by a 2 Year warranty.

24/32-Bit DAC: The Kenwood DMX905S utilizes a 24/32-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality with a Signal to Noise ratio up to 90.5dB.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood DMX905S is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the DMX905S are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

Gold-Plated 6ch/5V Pre-Outs + Sub Control: The DMX905S features front, rear and subwoofer 5.0-volt pre-outs. The front and rear speaker pre-outs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading and offers independent level control (-50 to +10 dB). The pre-outs are gold-plated for superior signal transfer.

Vehicle Setup: In order to optimize the sound quality in your vehicle, you can indentify the type of vehicle you have, select speaker sizes & locations, as well as configure listening distances.

    • Car Type: Select your car type to automatically set the delay time of each speaker for timing adjustment of sound output of each channel to have the highest surround effect. Choose from Compact, Full Size Car, Wagon, Mini Van, SUV, or Off
    • Speaker Size: You can select which size speakers are in your vehicle - Tweeter (Small, Medium, Large, or None), Front & Rear (3.5", 4", 4.75", 5", 6.5", 6.75", 7", 4x6", 5x7", 6x8", 6x9", 7x10" or None), and Sub (6.5", 8", 10", 12", 15" or Over, None).
    • Speaker Location: You can indicate the location of your vehicle's front and speakers. Choose from "Upper Door Area", "Lower Door Area", "On Dash", "Under Dash", or "Parcel Shelf Area".
    • DTA (Digital Time Alignment): For a better sound-stage you can select your optimal listening position. You can choose from All, Front Left, Front Right or Front. You can also select to manually fine tune the sound stage, using Digital Time Alignment (DTA) by selecting the distance (0-20') for each individual speaker in the vehicle compared to your listening position.

High Pass & Low Pass Crossovers: The receiver offers independent high pass filters for front speakers and rear speakers, as well as a low pass crossover for the unit's sub out.

    • Front & Rear: Independently set high pass filter (HPF) for your front & rear speakers.
      • Frequency: 30Hz, 40Hz, 50Hz, 60Hz, 70Hz, 80Hz, 90Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, 150Hz, 180Hz, 220Hz, 250Hz, Through (Full-Range)
      • Slope: -6dB, -12dB, -18dB, -24dB
      • Gain: -8 to 0 dB
    • Sub: Set low pass filter (LPF) for unit sub output.
      • Frequency: 30Hz, 40Hz, 50Hz, 60Hz, 70Hz, 80Hz, 90Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, 150Hz, 180Hz, 220Hz, 250Hz, Through (Full-Range)
      • Slope: -6dB, -12dB, -18dB, -24dB
      • Gain: -8 to 0 dB
      • Phase: Reverse (180Ã'°), Normal (0Ã'°)

Equalizer: The Kenwood DMX905S offers 8 EQ Presets for easy adjustment, a 13-band EQ for customized tuning, and a Drive EQ mode to overcome road noise. Separate EQ settings and EQ presets can be stored for each source or you can apply one EQ preset or curve to all sources.

    • Preset EQ: The integrated equalizer offers 8 preset sound modes (Flat, Pops, Easy, Top40, Jazz, Powerful, Rock, or User 1-4) suitable for the music genre of your choice.
    • 13-Band EQ: The User modes (1-4) allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 13-band EQ (62.5Hz, 100Hz, 160Hz, 250Hz, 400Hz, 630Hz, 1kHz, 1.6kHz, 2.5kHz, 4kHz, 6.3kHz, 10kHz, & 16kHz). Each frequency's gain level can be adjusted from -9dB to +9 dB.
    • Drive EQ: The Drive EQ mode helps you hear your music over road noise. It boosts certain frequency ranges that become hard to hear due to road noise.

Music Enhancements: You can restore the sound lost due to audio compression, as well as enhance the sound by virtually manipulating the soundscape.

    • Realizer: When MP3, WMA, or AAC files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Realizer feature boosts low frequencies which can be lost during compression. Set to Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, or Off.
    • Supreme: When MP3, WMA, or AAC files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.
    • Space Enhancer & Stage EQ: You can set the Space Enhancer to Small, Large, or Off. Each setting value indicates the soundscape level. You can also virtually raise the sound position heard from your speakers; the Stage EQ can be set to High, Middle, Low, or Off.

Volume Level & Bass Management: The digital media receiver offers several volume level adjustments to tailor the audio output of your sources. The DMX905S also provides bass management to get the most impact out of your system.

    • Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to +6.
    • Dynamic Range: The dynamic range can be adjusted by selecting either Normal, Wide or Dialog. Dialog makes the total sound volume become larger as compared with Wide and Normal, allowing you to listen to the movie's dialogue more clearly. This is effective only on Dolby Digital software.
    • Bass Boost & DC Extension: The DMX905S features a four-step Bass Boost (Off/1/2/3) to enhance your music's lower frequencies. When "Bass DC Extension is turned on, frequencies lower than 6.25 Hz are set the same gain level as the unit's 13-Band EQ 62.5 Hz gain setting.
    • Loudness: This function enhances low and high frequencies to make the sound clearer lower volumes.

Source Beep: The in-dash receiver provides an audible beep to confirm source selection. This function can be turned On or Off.

Android (Android Auto) & iPhone (CarPlay) Integration

Wireless Android Auto: The Kenwood receiver supports the Android Auto app for select Android smartphones using a wired or wireless connection. You can connect Google's Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2XL, Nexus 6P, and Nexus 5X (running Android OS 8.0 Oreo or higher and version 3.1 or higher of the Android Auto app) to the Kenwood receiver wirelessly using WiFi and Bluetooth (both wireless connections must be made; a wired USB connection must be made initially between the Android phone and the Kenwood receiver to setup Wireless Android Auto). Seems to be the best value unit of the Kenwood line up. If you don't need a CD/DVD player, navigation, or a HD display; it seems to be the best option. I just like using old school aux or usb, I've never liked wireless. And it still has pre-amps for extra amplifiers, and crossovers to send proper frequency's to each speaker. Plus on sale for $250 off, should be great once I install it! Thanks Bryce for all the help!!!!!! [ Eric  Feb 25, 2019 ]

I spoke with Jolene and told her I didn't want to spend a fortune, that I wanted Apple CarPlay and Waze integration. The other catch was two rear view inputs for my truck. After reviewing and contemplating I ordered it! [ Justin  Feb 23, 2019 ]

I did a lot of research of the past few weeks and felt that Kenwood was the best product for my 2012 Toyota 4Runner. I was originally looking at a different (less expensive unit) but saw this one go on sale. After talking with the Crutchfield Advisor, I decided that this unit was worth paying the extra $$. I wanted a head unit with Apple CarPlay capability, and that would allow me to preserve factory functions like VW MFD display. With this and the iDatalink Maestro RR, I can have this. What is the Wi-Fi that is mentioned in the manual used for?
    [ michael  Feb 28, 2019 ]

    A
This is from Kenwood customer support: I understand you are inquiring about the DMX905S. The Wi-Fi for this unit is only used for Wireless Android Auto. Please note that the only phones currently available that support Wireless Android Auto are the Google Pixels. You may contact the manufacture of your phone to verify when wireless Android Auto will be available for your device.

It is for Android Auto wireless connection.
    [ Robert  Mar 01, 2019 ]
    A
It can connect to your phone via WiFi instead of Bluetooth. However, you much have Android 9.0 or higher to use this feature. If you have Android 9.0 or Higher you can use WiFi and Wireless Android Auto to connect to your unit.
    [ TxGulfCoast  Feb 28, 2019 ]

Android Auto Wireless and Wireless Apple Carplay. To use the wireless Android Auto you'll need an Android Phone which has been updated to Android Pie (9.0), of which there are very few right now. I'm not sure about which iPhones are able to do wireless Carplay. If you don't have a phone which can make use of the wireless Android Auto or Carplay, be you can still connect via USB. And, of course, Bluetooth streaming is always possible.
    [ Jake  Feb 28, 2019 ]
    A
Wireless Android Auto. But it still doesn't work just because your phone runs Pie. Google allows this by phone model and Samsungs aren't included yet.

2013 Kia Sorento, infinity sound without navigation. Will I lose my backup camera? Will it automatically change to camera when shifting to reverse? would there be any loss of audio quality?
    [ efrag  Feb 25, 2019 ]

    A
It will switch to back up camera mode in reverse and audio quality will far surpass stock audio easily
    [ jameson  Feb 25, 2019 ]

This radio will display backup camera when in reverse, assuming you have the proper connection from the factory camera. If your infinity sound system has a sub woofer, you may loose it? I did on my Ridgeline. Contact Crutchfield to be certain.

Does this unit allow you to tilt the display? I have a Jeep Wrangler and I am concerned that with the top down I will have a glare on the screen.

    [ Daniel  Feb 21, 2019 ]
    A
    No it does not.
    [ Richard  Feb 20, 2019 ]
    A
Not with the default setup. You would need to come up with your own mounting setup to do so. However the display has a "virtual tilt" which just means you can set up between 0° and 3° of tilt and the display does an adjustment in software that controls colors brightness and contrast to compensate for LCD viewing angles. I'm not sure how this will help with the sun though :/

what is the gps antenna used for that comes with this unit? are you able to add gps to this unit?

At minimum, it sets the clock using GPS. Unsure what else it does since this unit does not have navigation.
    [ James  Jan 02, 2019 ]
    A
Hello- Apologies, the deck was a gift that has not been installed yet. I did an Adobe search for GPS in the owner's manual which only mentions installation of GPS antenna and "syncing with the GPS clock". The unit does not have built in navigation, so I am assuming the GPS ability is limited by the apps that are used, ie with Apple Carplay or Android Auto. Sorry I could not be more specific as installation in a vehicle will not happen for a couple weeks, but main info that matters is that the unit does not have its own GPS Navigation built in. Good luck.
    [ Mastalski  Jan 01, 2019 ]
    A
I don't think so. I believe you can only use your phone's gps using android auto or weblink/waze
    [ edward  Dec 30, 2018 ]
    A
The GPS antenna in this unit is used for the built in navigation this unit has :)
    [ Chloe  Dec 30, 2018 ]
    A
I believe it is only to provide compass direction and a synced clock. I initially did not connect it and the compass only pointed North and I manually had to update time but everything else worked. Navigation only works in Android auto or AppleCarplay which requires a smartphone.

can i have two audio sources? I have All of my music on an old Iphone with no service, but have service on my newer phone. I would like to the old phone for music only and the new phone for phone calls, WAZE etc.

The Kenwood unit has two USB ports that can have two phones connected at a time. Only one can be accessed at a time. The best way is to connect new phone to USB port for main data, calls, and old phone to the A/V input jack for music.Enter

Why when i plug in my iphone don't i get the option for carplay only weblink.?
    [ Meglmt  Dec 25, 2018 ]
    1 answer
    A
I'm not familiar with iPhone choices for connection. My Android will default to Android Auto, but is overridden when I start the Weblink app. I assume it is the same for CarPlay. I do need to make sure my phone is not in a power saving mode. I assume it is the same for iPhone. Of course, remember with iPhone it must still be connected to the black USB.

You'll want the proper installation accessories (dash mount kit, integration harness, antenna adapter, etc.) for any vehicle you plan to install it into. You can be sure the stereo will be a recommended fit and get the proper installation accessories by using the "Find What Fits" application on the main Crutchfield website: https://www.crutchfield.com/car/outfitmycar/mycar.aspx CarPlay requires a compatible iPhone running iOS 7.1 or newer.

How is excelon sound quality over say regular Kenwood or alpine, Sony. Or are they all the same and I should just buy a jvc?
    [ Enasty  Apr 14, 2018 ]
    1 answer
    A
Kenwood's Excelon series receivers use custom-made and carefully selected parts; such as power supply capacitors, coupling capacitors, and gold-plated (5-volt) pre-outs. These parts are then optimized through meticulous tuning of the component values and circuit paths. Kenwood's Excelon series are also backed by a 2 Year warranty, compared to 1 year with other Kenwood models. For more details or to discuss further, please contact an Advisor directly by phone (888.955.6000) or online chat. Thanks!
