About the Kenwood Excelon DPX593BT

My, what a large display it has

When I worked on the phones here at Crutchfield, many of my customers didn't necessarily want a car stereo with a touchscreen display, but they absolutely wanted a display they could read without squinting. The Kenwood Excelon DPX593BT CD receiver delivers exactly that, along with Bluetooth® for multiple phones and lots of ways to get your music going. And Kenwood backs up this stereo with a 2-year warranty.

Better to see what's playing

This stereo fits in most vehicles with 4" tall dash openings, and its variable-color illumination lets you pick the look you want in your dash. The big 3-line display shows off the song and artist information. And this Kenwood's simply control layout lets you get to your sources, calls, and tone controls quickly.

More versatility with Bluetooth

Since yours is probably not the only phone used in your vehicle, the DPX593BT enables you to pair two Bluetooth-equipped phones and quickly switch between them for hands-free calling. And when you're streaming audio, Kenwood's Music Mix feature lets you pair five phones so everybody can pick their tunes for the ultimate road trip playlist. You can also control this stereo directly from your iPhone® or Android™ phone using Kenwood's free Remote app.

Get to your smartphone's music

You can play music from an iPhone or Android that is plugged into the receiver's front-panel USB port. You can also enjoy your favorite Pandora®, Spotify®, and iHeartRadio® Internet Radio stations from your iPhone using the USB connection or with your Android using Bluetooth.

More ways to listen

You can satisfy your music craving by using the receiver's sensitive AM/FM tuner, playing a CD, or sliding in a USB drive loaded with your favorite music files, including high-resolution FLAC files. If you're tired of hearing static, you should add a SiriusXM tuner to this Kenwood and check out the huge variety of programming offered by satellite radio. Nothing makes a trip go faster than finding a great satellite radio station, then listening to it for the duration of your trek.

Set the tone

Once you've got your music selected, you can use this Kenwood's 13-band equalizer and digital time alignment to zero in on that sweet sound you want. Kenwood included three sets of hot 5-volt preamp outputs for ultra-clean sound to go to additional amps or a powered subwoofer.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

Love the radio and it has moved me into the hands free calling world in my older truck. It was simple to install and looks great in my 2004 chevy 2500hd crew cab. There are a few problems i am having. First is the time on the clock, it will not Auto sync and when i adjust it automatically it goes back to 12:00 A.M on Auto Sync mode, so i have had to turn that feature off and just use manual clock. Second is Pandora, Sometime it connects and sometimes i just have to play it using BT Mode. Third is it will not let me sync my contacts or call history to it. Functionality is easy to use. The Issues i am having may be user error, only time will tell. Maybe i just need to use it longer, i have had it for about 2 weeks. I am giving it 4 stars because there is a work around to the things i am having issues with. Would definitely recommend this radio if for nothing else but for the simplicity of it.

Pros: Easy to adjust features, Display is Bright, Hands free calling works great, BT Mode does everything i need it to do on my Iphone XR

Cons: Clock will not Auto Sync, Pandora Not syncing all the time, Contacts and call history will not sync.

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I have installed five different Crutchfield receivers in various vehicles the past couple years and this unit has been the best purchase to date. Of course different units are going to sound different according to the vehicle it is being used in, but for my 2009 RX350 this Kenwood sounds great with the old standard factory speakers. The Bluetooth paired up easily with my iPhone and phone calls have been loud and clear. Went with the pre-wiring option again (second time) and it is well worth it. The Crutchfield pre-wiring and the design of the RX350 made this install SUPER easy. I've spent hours before but this install was literally 15 minutes. I'd buy this Kenwood again and would recommend it to friends and family. Blends well with cars that don't have other touch screen controls.

Good radio

Got this unit yesterday and installed it today. I did not use the Metra dash kit. Instead I used a dash kit I got thru eBay to keep the radio on the same spot as the factory radio. The Metra dash kit would have covered up the storage compartment next to the radio. The eBay kit worked just fine. It came with a frame which mounted on the radio which allowed me to fasten the radio the factory radio bracket. I gave the review 4 stars instead of 5 bc of the Metra kit taking up too much space and also bc the radio is not as intuitive as I want it to be. I really would have preferred an Alpine but the sound of this Kenwood is not bad. I'll just have to read the manual carefully to learn the radio.

Pros: Fits well, good sound, good install instructions, good support from Crutchfield.

Cons: Not easy to operate, Metra kit takes up too much space

I will only use Crutchfield for all my electronic purchases.

Nice receiver I bought because of the 50 off 2 sets of speakers that sounded worse than the factory ones I ended up returning them KFC-1666S. I would have went with a Sony WX-920BT if I had to do it all over. The Kenwood APP does not work and Bluetooth has a mind of its own if you have two phones on at the same time. Would not recommend... Crutchfield sent the wiring harness and dash kit that was not needed I thought they were the experts but why would they waste their money on sending parts that were not needed? I used the mount off the factory receiver included trim ring looks great. The tech support was extremely nice.

Pros: Great sound and FM reception

Cons: App does not work Kenwood stated they are supposedly working on it. Just do Bluetooth audio streaming the pandora app works but it takes over and automatically reconnects

Five stars for the head unit itself. Zero stars for the remote app. Good layout. Good display. I prefer the larger lights to the ones that are a series of dots. Looks good in the dash. Good sound, won't need an amp. Easy installation in my vehicle.

Cons: As usual, the display is too dim in bright sun and too bright at night. Be forewarned that the remote app does not work.

A great modern deck with everything you need to listen to your music whether you want blue tooth connectivity (up to 5 devices at once) USB, Aux or old fashioned better sounding CDs...you have every way you need to listen to your music in whatever form. The fully customizable color LCD screen is cool and adds personal flavor to your ride. My kid loves to choose the color for that day. Not too fancy and no unnecessary bells and whistles. Easy to install with the provided kit, and help yourself out, save time and wiring tediousness, and pay the $$ to get the Crutchfield pre-made harness to plug right into your vehicles wiring harness. Sooooooo easy it's worth it.

Pros: Can play just about every type of modern music media from CDs to blue-tooth. Customize LCD color scheme. All the colors of the rainbow!

Good sound, not so good in other areas

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Overall, I would have no qualms about reccomending this head unit, albeit with a couple of caveats. Considering the relatively low cost of the unit, I was impressed by how good it sounds with the otherwise stock system in my truck. However, in order to make it sound as well as it does, I had to experiment with a lot of unconventional settings and software in the unit. That process was tedious, time consuming, and not well-explained in the owners manual. I expect most peope with less technical experience would find it daunting and troublesome. There was an issue with the wiring harness too - apparently the labels on two of the wires were apllied incorrectly, though a Crutchfield tech was able to solve that issue for me in very short order. Also, the plastic face plate just looks and feels cheaper than some other head units I've used in the past. The included trim pieces would not work wth my '04 Xterra, and I had to modify the Metra installation kit in order to make it work.

Pros: Good sound, 3-line text display is nice, good value.

Cons: Face plate looks and feels cheap, error in wire labels, complicated and annoying software "features" that are necessary to get the most out of the unit, manual was of limited use in setting up those features.

Tons of Features and Great Audio Setup Menu

Great priced radio with tons of features. The sound is clean out of the box you can also customize it to you vehicle and speaker configuration to get the best sound for your particular vehicle. Paired easily to my iPhone; love the Bluetooth playback and hands free calling I now have. My order included an aftermarket radio bracket and trim plate for my 2005 Mazda Tribute but the bracket and trim plate that came with the radio were actually of a better quality and worked with the double DDIN hole left by the factory installed radio. I just had to glue a 1/4" piece of plywood onto the factory radio's slide rail to support the back of the radio. With the new radio in I'm probably going to loose the SUV to the rest of the family now that they can play their music from their phones.

Pros: Easy to install Can add and subtract music sources to meet your needs. The audio setup menu lets you choose your speaker sizes and locations to customize the sound for your particular vehicle. You can customize the color of the screen to match or compliment your vehicle's dash colors.

Cons: With so many features it can take a while to figure the radio out. My family now wants to steal my SUV to listen to their music on the radio.

Awesome sound. with the same speakers my factory radio sounded like crap. i put in this radio expecting that i would upgrade the speakers later. No need with this radio the speakers sound great. This thing has a lot of options so it is well worth it to read the whole owners manual. I love the fact that it comes with an external Mic for Bluetooth calls. the Mic did not sound good on calls when we plugged it in, it sounded like you were 10 feet from the mic. But after reading the manual and realizing that you can adjust the levels of the Mic also, it is crystal clear

Pros: sound quality, many options to fine tune the sound

Incredibly Nice Unit

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

First and foremost, the staff at Crutchfield is amazing!! Now, this Kenwood unit is amazing, especially at the price I paid!! The item was shipped/received quickly and so incredibly easy to install. I ordered the the wiring harness too, so when it came to installation, it was all plug-n-play! (The hardest part was removing the stock unit.) Did I mention that they include the removal pins too, as no additional charge!?? So, the unit is much more powerful than I expected, with clear, crisp sound quality. The multitude of settings are mostly self-explanatory, but I'm going to have to look into the manual to get everything sorted out. Overall, the EQ, Fader, Balance, Clock, Bass Boost, Source, et al., is very straight forward. I'm currently enjoying the blue-tooth setting as well, syncing this unit to my phone; whenever I start the car, it connects to my phone and automatically starts my Spotify app!! (It also has the USB port and Aux input, if needed.) The display is big and bold, and it's easily readable during the brightest of sunny days. With the included installation kit, it just fits in my dash, and looks like it came from the factory. So far, I have zero complaints about this item. (Oh yeah, and it's got a CD player, for some of those awesome mix CDs you've made!!!) I'll probably add new speakers to this set-up in the Spring, but right now, I'm enjoying this excellent Kenwood set-up!!

Pros: Too many to list - read the review above

Cons: Zero!!

The basic deck itself is very nice, installed easily and performs as described ALMOST. It is no fault of Crutchfield but the system is not completely compatible with my Moto G5 plus phone. While I can make and receive calls and have some other functionality, both Bluetooth Audio and USB are unusable with my phone and give a "No Support" message on the deck. When I talked to Kenwood they told me some things to try (none of which helped) and then advised that my phone may not be compatible with their receiver. I then asked them about another phone and got a short note stating that a Bluetooth compatibility list is not available and we cannot guarantee functionality with the phone. If I had known ahead of time that I was not going to have these features available I would have not gotten this deck. If I had known ahead of time that Kenwood couldn't tell me what phones their products were compatible with I wouldn't have gotten a Kenwood.

TONS OF OPTIONS, more than I need

Patrick from Westfield, MA on 10/4/2018

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

First of all, I bought this from the "Scratch and Dent" outlet. It came without the original box, but everything else was there, including the protective film still on the deck's face. Unit was brand new, never installed, 100% perfect, for an outstanding price! I bought this to replace a perfectly working three year old Kenwood DPX301BT that I decided to throw into another vehicle with some $20 no-name radio. Installation, piece of cake. Three line display is just ok. the first line shows the name of the input and the time, the second line is the RDS, third line is the date. I'm not trying to nit-pick, but I liked the one line on the 301 better. This is an Excelon deck and has a ton of sound-forming options, from speaker size to some really nice preset EQ's. The menu is clunky to navigate in relation to the 301. The settings menu is accessed by pushing the big volume button. On the 301, pressing the volume was "mute", so it is a matter of getting used to the menu and no mute button on the 593. This is not a poor reflection on the deck, it is me needing to unlearn. There is NO remote control, but the remote from the 301 works perfectly. I really like this deck, but in my regular ole 4 speaker Dodge pickup, it isn't better than the Kenwood it replaces. If you don't need a CD player and sound customization options, save some cash and pick up the DPX303MBT.

Pros: Adjustable color display, adjustable color keys, completely customizable soundfields, controls for iheartradio, Pandora, Spotify, can connect two phones with Bluetooth!

Cons: Premium Excelon deck, they could have tossed in a remote

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Radio looks and works great. The Bluetooth connected easily and works well with my phone. Call quality is good, and the music streams well with no problems. The display has tons of different colors that will match virtually any interior lighting. However at certain times of the day the display can be a little hard to read if the sunlight is on it, even at full brightness. Did have some minor things I didn't like but will adjust to. If you're on a call when you get into the vehicle it may start playing music as soon as it connects to the phone. Not a huge deal, I just have to close out my music app and then restart it when the phone call is completed. Wish it had come with a remote, but I'm sure that a more expensive model does come with one. Overall, it looks and works great and I would purchase it again.

Pros: Easy Bluetooth connection and control

Cons: Sometimes will play music while on a phone call, could be phone related.

A Great Player But Beware of Samsung Phone Issues

So I bought this player at a Crutchfield's rep. recommendations. It sounds great, it has many features but I wanted a receiver that I could connect my Samsung S9 to with the USB C cable and control the phone and charge it the same time. It won't work. I called Kenwood who advised me I would have to buy a Kenwood receiver model that ends in the number 5 and has the function, "web-link". These are much more money. I called Crutchfield to confirm and the support tech was very helpful and did research while I was on hold and confirmed, it wouldn't work. I'm very disappointed. I like the receiver so much that I wanted to buy another for my second vehicle, but now I'm not sure.

Pros: Great Sound and Features

Cons: NO Samsung USB control

Great radio for the price, crutchfield is a great company, fast delivery, super technical assistance department. Everything I needed to install was there.

Pros: Crossover built in, bright big display, easy to read while driving simple to make adjustments.

Cons: Still can't get radio to stay on right time, tried every setting it always goes back to an hour earlier than it should be. Even tried turning click sync off and still won't stay on right time. For crossover you have to know what you're doing...but you can usually find answers on internet together you close.

The BT connectivity of this unit is the worst I have ever used.

Pros: I bought this unit to replace the failed factory unit in my 2005 GMC Sierra. Installation was very simple and the fitment is great in the dash. I had one wiring question and the Crutchfield team had all the answers.

Cons: I don't listen to broadcast or satellite radio and use this unit to stream from my cell phone. The BT connectivity is the worst I have ever had to deal with. I have a less expensive Boss unit in my other car that connects BT effortlessly. After a year or so of use, I am getting ready to replace this unit with something else.

Purchased the product to replace a failing radio in our 2013 Dodge Caravan. Installation instructions were good. The user operation was confusing. There are numerous models in the same manual. Had to determine Which section applied to me.I installed it myself did not have any real problems. The phone and satalite antenna went in smoothly. The hardest part was fishing the phone and antenna wires up through the dash to the radio. The existing trim has to be slightly modified with a reciprocating small hack saw. Lucky I have all the required tools. Installation looks professional radio sounds great.

I purchased this unit to replace a factory stereo that was having electronic difficulties. For the price, I am very happy with the radio. I would suggest buying this radio if budget is an issue. If you read the specs of this one compared to some more expensive radios I think you will come to the same sensible conclusion I did, and that this radio meets or exceeds the capabilities of many radios much more expensive then this one. Also, a two year warranty is not offered by other manufactures.

Pros: Easy to install Great sound Looks good Plenty of options Bluetooth 2 phones at one time 2 year warranty

Cons: Might just be the driving position of my car, but in bright sunlight, I have to move my head about a foot in order to read the display. This is why I gave this radio 4 stars. It seems petty, but I did not have to do that with the factory radio.

PROS: The unit arrived quickly and I had it professionally installed. There is a learning curve for all the features, but it is fairly intuitive to get through the menu system. The sound quality through the factory speakers is very much improved and easily adjusted . Im still getting familiar with some of the blue tooth features, but the hands free phone controls will prove useful. I need to plan a road trip and put it through it's paces. The display is attractive and very legible, and the many variations should please anyone. The cd plays Very nicely. My old cd's have a new life! CONS: The manual is long and can be very vague and redundant. Keep it handy! Bluetooth phone pairing was a little dicey, but works well once it's up and running.

I was able to hook it up easily to steering wheel controls using Crutchfield's Crux wiring as well. Bluetooth is simple to connect to. As for the product it is a fine radio although if I was to do it over again I really don't think I would have purchased it. For someone like myself I am not savvy enough to figure out the operation of it of which is my fault. The instructions are in my opinion terrible I looked on you tube to find information about the operation's with NO LUCK and what I did find is a couple of guy's that seem to be trying to start a career as stand up comedians, just totally stupid. I really would have thought Kenwood would have put out a complete video guide of some sort but as of now NOTHING. As for the folks at Crutchfield they are great in every way and they have been a lot of help but I can't keep calling a tech for every little thing I can't figure out which is just about everything. I myself feel as though I bought something that is way above me and I will never make this mistake again. OVER ALL THIS HAS BEEN A VERY BAD MISTAKE ON MY PART I HAVE SOMETHING THAT IS OF NO VALUE TO ME!

Pros: I am sure a very good product.

Cons: For me it is way to complicated to use, the instruction manual is very confusing. Their is nothing in the form of a step by step video to view which would be a major help. For me it has been a very bad purchase although it is my mistake.

Overall, it's a HUGE improvement over the dysfunctional GM factory stereo from my 05 Grand Prix. I'd say it's a solid 4 - star rating. Some things I'd need to feel it's a 5 - star are 1. Mute 2. Dimmer connected to factory dimming or auto lights 3. More substantial knob and buttons (they have a thin, flimsy feel). Considering the price, it's a great value. I have outputs to expand with, great audio adjustments, satisfying visual control, and great sound even through factory speakers.

Pros: Affordable quality, great sound & controls, room for expansion, great visual appeal and customization, easy install

Cons: Flimsy buttons and knob, no mute, dimmer is one level toggle on/ off (with a timer, that's nice) unconnected to factory dimming,

The only downfall I didn't like was the settings which were not like every other stereo that allows trebil, bass, mids, etc. Instead this stereo sets in ohms for other variances. Hands free and the bluetooth work great. This unit is better than we expected. We upgraded everything. Door speakers, tweeters added a 12 sub and new AMP we are very happy. Easy to install thanks to all the extras thrown in by Crutchfield, made the job a breeze. This is everything we wanted or needed in our Trailblazer. If youre looking for an inexspinsive upgrade to your old factory radio, this is a great no frills head with a great price tag.

Pros: Bluetooh works like a charm with my Droid Turbo 2. A lot of features for the price. Music sounds better than i thought it would over the BT Audio. Add some good speakers, amp, and sub and youll have a great sounding system for under $600

Cons: Playing a burned cd is slow to load songs if you have them in mp3 format. As you skip through songs sometimes the unit reboots. Usually in the 100 song range. May be a better way to sort the songs so im still testing that, but with Sirus and Pandora i doubt ill be playing many cds anyway.

First time with Crutchfield and its been an abysmal showing.. Unit was shipped to me as a freaking DUD. yes DEAD, DOA, WASTE OF TIME, BROKEN.. I spent countless hours troubleshooting a broken unit straight from the dealer.. I also wasted money on many connectors, and now wont have a radio for over a week. Crutchfield cant even ship out my new unit until 2 days from now.. Pure headache from this company.. THEN to make matters worse I thought entering my car info was supposed to get me the correct parts. This clearly was not the case.. not only where the instructions wrong they sent me a Single din Unit for my double din stereo.. I had to get a saw and cut plastic to modify this chineese garbage to make a correct fit.. I have a list of tools neeeded ( supplied by Crutchfield ) for the install and nothing suggests a saw or knife, or modifying plastic.. again WRONG INSTRUCTIONS I tried to ask for some type of good will or discount and they refused.. I honestly dont see the difference from Crutchfield vs other retailers than over inflated prices.. I'll most likely be returning my full order worth over $500 cause this has been an abysmal experience. The local store will do the install for free and wont charge you for supposedly correct parts you gotta hack apart to make a fit.. great way to refuse a return though have all the installs require heavy modifications so the items arent new.. 0/5 stars, they made me choose 1

Pros: haha

It's a basic no frills stereo for an awesome price point. Sounds great, love the 13 band eq. I thought the face would look cheap but it actually looks great and an upgrade to the look of my car. Is it a good dependable receiver? Don't know yet, it's just too soon to make that call. Does it sound really good? I would say it's an ok head. I would say that it sounds just as good as any of the other typical receivers in this price range. Would I buy it again? If I had it to do over again I'm really not sure about that at this time. But I'm leaning to the word ...... NO ..... I prefer separate bass, mid, and treble controls and this head doesn't have that. Although the head does have a manual EQ, and that function does an adequate job for what it is. It really needs those separate bass/mid/treble controls to clean-up the output. It just sounds like its lacking in true stereo quality sound, or should I say (stereo fidelity). All of these newer receivers in this price range sound like this, to me. But, maybe I need to buy more power ..... LOL!!..., or maybe I need to buy a big subwoofer or two ..... LOL!!.... nahh, And here again, I must say that it does have lot of bells and whistles that the average person probably doesn't need to fool with whilst trying to drive an automobile up and down the highway. Trying to adjust the latest digital LCD millennial wonder at 70 miles an hour is a definite no, no, kids.

Pros: Equalizer

Cons: Too many menus to fool around with while trying to drive a vehicle = DANGEROUS!!!

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Had it for a couple weeks, and love it so far! Great budget stereo with lots of features. Purchased to replace a OEM stereo for my Scion XB. Wanted a lower-priced unit with modern features (hands free calling, bluetooth) along with maximum compatibility for different inputs (USB/Bluetooth/Aux in). If you don't want/need a touch screen this is the way to go. The bluetooth auto pairing is great, grab your phone and go, when you get back in your car the audip picks up where you left off. (FYI, This model unit only has 1 Aux in and USB plug on the front, so if you're planning on running more through the console or elsewhere do your research.) The hands free calling works as expected, and the included microphone is average-sounding. The included trim plates (2) give you options, I ended up not needing the aftermarket brackets supplied by Crutchfield to get the unit to line up with my double din dash slot-your mileage may vary.

Pros: *Good price for all the features! *customizable lighting- you can set the display and the instrument backlights separately for a two tone effect or leave it in demo mode and have a disco party every day

Cons: *the iphone app isn't very robust, oerates as a very basic remote control. doesn't let you tweak stereo settings. *the menu tree to get to some of the features is a bit counter-intuitive so read the manual and keep it in a safe place. *Hands free outgoing calls require a couple button pushes, could be distracting while driving.

Awesome equipment! Absolutely unbelievable how much of a quality sound difference there is between the factory stereo and the new Kenwood DPX593BT head unit in my Chevy Silverado SS. Thanks to the Crutchfield rep for recommending this product. I will be back to them in the future when it's time to upgrade speakers and possibly the amp in same vehicle.

Pros: Great sound quality over factory unit.

Cons: Installation quite involved but absolutely worth it.

Installed into my daughters 2007 mustang with no problems. Kit provided made it almost a snap in. Daughter loves the look - set the display to pink! - the sound and the automatic links to her iPhone. Had one question on a Saturday and the tech I talked to was friendly and very helpful. Two thumbs up!!

Pros: Easy install and setup. Mates to the Shaker 500 with no problems and full performance.

Cons: Android phone is not hands free unless phone is left unlocked (no password). Only affects dial out and voice. iPhone works perfect.

I love this Stereo, love the features etc, however I absolutely hate it too. The clock will not keep accurate time, if it is below 40 degrees it will not turn on. VERY DISAPPOINTING. Kenwood use to make great products. This is the first one I have had in many years. Went to Alpine and decided to try this one in my truck. Not very happy.

It's Kenwood, what's not to like. I have been buying Kenwood stereos for 25 years. The DPX593BT has everything I need. The display is very nice and clear, the controls are easy to navigate. This stereo has many ways to manipulate the music coming out of the speakers. Awesome. Thanks Kenwood and Crutchfield.

Got rid of the voice button for a bt audio source button, not crazy about that. Sounds good. Kenwood app is a little laggy, but overall nice unit sounds good. Just could improve on intuitiveness. Now service from Crutchfield was absolutely flawless!

Pros: Sound

Cons: Laggy KENWOOD app Lack of dedicated Siri button Cannot have USB/BT at same time to take calls whilst listening to audio through USB.

Very functional and feature packed, while lacking many common items. There is no mute button. The cheaper Blaupunkt New Jersey that we installed in another vehicle a couple of years ago allowed hands-free with the built-in microphone. This more expensive Kenwood only allows hands-free with the included external microphone that has to be mounted somewhere in your vehicle. Honestly disappointing. If I had not prematurely thrown away the packaging unneeded installation parts, I would be making arrangements to return it.

Pros: Bluetooth, front access for auxiliary & USB, variable color display, and more.

Cons: No mute button. Hands-free doesn't work without installing external microphone.

Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth 3.0: The Kenwood Excelon DPX593BT is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (ver. 3.0) allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

  • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.6 (Hands Free Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
  • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.5 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Kenwood Excelon DPX593BT. Visit Kenwood's Support Site for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

SSP & USB Pairing: With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Kenwood Excelon DPX593BT without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. You can even pair your Apple iPhone (iOS 5+) or Android smartphone (running Kenwood Music Play App) by simply connecting it to the Kenwood head unit via USB and following a single prompt on the head unit's display.

  • Dual Phone Connection: Thanks to the Dual Phone Connection feature, two Bluetooth-enabled phones can remain connected to the Kenwood receiver. This means you can an answer an incoming call from either phone from the head unit. Also, both of your phone's contact lists are downloaded to the receiver. To make a call from one of the phones using the Kenwood receiver, you simply have to select Phone 1 or Phone 2 on the head unit's front-panel.
  • Music Mix: The new Music Mix feature allows five Bluetooth audio source devices to be connected to the Kenwood receiver at one time, so you can switch between Bluetooth playback sources a lot easier and quicker. While "BT Audio" source is selected on the head unit, you can simply press the music playback button on your connected Bluetooth source devices to switch between devices and begin music playback. However, you cannot stream audio from two different Bluetooth audio source devices at the same time or combine music libraries or playlists from two different connected devices.
Note: You can pair up to five Bluetooth-enabled devices to the Kenwood head unit. When an already paired Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units.

Bluetooth Hands-Free Communication (w/ External Mic): The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The controls of the DPX593BT can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

  • Answering a Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. You can answer the call from the head unit's front-panel controls, or setup the head unit to automatically answer the incoming call immediately or after 1-30 seconds. The DPX593BT also supports the Call Waiting function, so you can answer another incoming call while suspending the current call you are on. Your compatible cell-phone must also support this feature.
  • Dialing a Number: Using the DPX593BT, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:
    • Enter Phone #: Allows you to directly dial a phone number up to 32 digits from the head unit's control knob or remote control.
    • Preset Dial: Allows you to register up to 6 phone numbers for quick dialing. The preset numbers can be accessed from the head unit's front-panel controls.
    • Phone Book: You can download phone book data from your mobile phone to the DPX593BT. You can then dial a contact within the phonebook from the head unit's front-panel controls. Contacts are categorized as Home, Office, Mobile, Other, or General.
    • Call History: The Call History is a list of calls that have originated from and were received by this unit that you can dial. You can select Outgoing, Incoming, or Missed calls.
    • Voice Dialing: If your mobile phone supports voice recognition, then you can dial out by voice command. Simply speak into the included microphone.

External Mic: The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the volume level, noise cancellation, and echo cancellation of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 10' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone offers an integrated mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash.

Wireless Audio Streaming: The Kenwood Excelon DPX593BT supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone or audio player. You are able to stream your stored music library on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, as well as music apps downloaded on your smartphone to the Kenwood Excelon DPX593BT for playback.

  • SBC + AAC Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the DPX593BT offers support of AAC.  By supporting AAC, the DPX593BT offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
  • Advanced Music Browsing: In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat), the DPX593BT lets you browse your stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, etc. (AVRCP 1.4 phones only; which includes Android 4.0+ and iPhone 5.0+).
  • Song/Artist Information: The head unit will also display your stored music and music app's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title (not compatible with all apps).
Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control: When paired and connected to an iPhone with Siri via Bluetooth, the Kenwood Excelon DPX593BT has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. Simply press-and-hold down on the head unit's Answer Button to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the DPX593BT and its microphone. You even can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone with Siri. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

Note: The head unit's display will only indicate hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Kenwood Excelon DPX593BT; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

Android & iPhone Integration

Android Open Accessory 2.0 (AOA 2.0) Connectivity: The Kenwood Excelon DPX593BT's front-panel USB port lets you connect select Android (OS 4.1-7.1.2) smartphones that support AOA 2.0 for music playback. Kenwood does not guarantee operation with all Android devices, regardless of operating system. There are two Android AOA 2.0 modes to choose from based on what content you want to listen to and how you want to control it.
  • Hand Mode: The Kenwood Excelon DPX593BT supports Android Open Accessory 2.0 (AOA 2.0), which lets  you connect your Android smartphone (OS 4.1-7.1.2) to the DPX593BT's front-panel USB port and listen to stored music and music apps from your Android device through the Kenwood head unit. You'll be able to control basic playback functions such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track. Other advanced music navigation will still be done from your Android smartphone's touchscreen. In this mode, the head unit will not display song/artist information; only "Hand Mode" will show up on display. You'll continue to view song/artist information from the Android device's touchscreen. You'll also still be able to access other functions and applications from your Android smartphone's touchscreen, while listening to music through the head unit. If you make a call or answer a call from your smartphone while listening to music in this mode, the music will pause until you are finished with the call and then start back up again.
  • Browse Mode (via Kenwood Music Play App): Downloading the Kenwood Music Play app onto your Android (OS 4.1-7.1.2) smartphone with AOA 2.0 support not only allows you to listen to stored music from your Android device through the Kenwood CD receiver connected via USB, but it also lets you browse your Android smartphone's music library from the head unit's front-panel controls. You can browse your store music library by Playlist, Artist, Song, Album, or Genre. The contents of a Playlist or Category can be searched alphabetically or numerically; you can even skip through the stored music files in specific increments (0.5/1/5/10%). You can also control Play/Pause and Previous/Next track from the head unit. In addition, the head unit will display song/artist information. You can exit the Kenwood Music Play app to access other functions and applications of your Android smartphone, while your stored music library is still playing through your head unit. If you make a call or answer a call from your smartphone while listening to music in this mode, the music will pause until you are finished with the call and then start back up again.

iPhone Direct Connection: The Kenwood Excelon DPX593BT's front-panel USB port can be used to connect your Lightning Apple device or 30-pin iPhone 4S to the head unit. The USB connection allows for playback of stored music and music apps on your iPod or iPhone through Kenwood receiver. If you have a newer iPod/iPhone with the Lightning-connector, you can use Kenwood's Lightning connector-to-USB cable (113KCIP103 sold separately) or the Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the DPX593BT. If you have an iPhone 4S with a 30-pin dock connector, you can use the dock connector-to-USB cable that comes with your Apple device or a 3rd party "Made for iPod/iPhone" certified dock-to-USB cable (sold separately) to connect your iPhone 4S to the DPX593BT.

  • Head Unit Control: From the head unit's front-panel controls you can search for stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, and Composer. The contents of a Playlist or Category can be searched alphabetically or numerically; you can even skip through the stored music files in specific increments (0.5/1/5/10%). The DPX593BT also supports Repeat (file/all) and Random (album/all) playback functions of stored music on your iPod/iPhone. In addition, you'll be able to control basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track) from stored music and select music apps streamed to your iPhone. You can also choose to control your Apple device from its own touchscreen, instead of the head unit.
  • Song/Artist Info Display: The DPX593BT will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information such as Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album title.

Smartphone Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1.5A of current to power and charge your connected Apple iPod/iPhone or Android smartphone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position (if your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it).

Audio Section

Excelon Series: The DPX593BT CD receiver is part of Kenwood's Excelon series line-up. It incorporates the latest technologies and delivers the highest sonic performance. From advanced audio tuning capabilities, crossover and equalizer system, high-voltage preouts (5V), plus a two-year warranty - Kenwood Excelon represents exceptional audio quality with long-lasting dependability.

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood Excelon DPX593BT utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

  • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
  • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

  • DTA (Digital Time Alignment): For a better sound-stage you can select your optimal listening position. You can choose from All, Front Left, Front Right or Front. You can also select to manually fine tune the sound stage, using Digital Time Alignment (DTA) by selecting the distance (0-20') for each individual speaker in the vehicle compared to your listening position.

High Pass & Low Pass Crossovers: You are able to select independent high pass crossovers for your tweeters, front speakers, and rear speakers; as well as a low pass crossover for the head unit's sub output.

    • Slope: -6dB, -12dB, -18dB, -24dB

Separate EQ settings and EQ presets can be stored for each source or you can apply one EQ preset or curve to all sources.

  • Preset EQ: The integrated equalizer offers 8 preset sound modes (Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, Drive EQ, or User) suitable for the music genre of your choice.

Each frequency's gain level can be adjusted from -9dB to +9 dB, while the Q-factor can be adjusted to 1.35, 1.5, or 2.0
  • Drive EQ: The Drive EQ mode helps you hear your music over road noise. It boosts certain frequency ranges that become hard to hear due to road noise.
  • Stage EQ: Stage EQ virtually lifts the sound up to ear-level for better imaging inside your vehicle.

Audio Settings: The Kenwood Excelon DPX593BT offers a variety of audio settings to further enhance your music listening experience.

  • Sound Reconstruction: When MP3, WMA, AAC files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Sound Reconstruction function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When Sound Reconstruction is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.
  • Space Enhancer & Sound Realizer: The Spacer Enhancer widens the soundstage inside your vehicle, while the Sound Realizer makes your music sound more realistic.
  • Loudness, Bass Boost & Bass Extension: The Loudness feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. The unit's Bass Boost enhances low bass frequencies at any volume level. There is also a Bass Extension feature which further enhances the unit's bass output at extremely low frequencies.
  • Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -15 to +6.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

Remote Control

Remote App (for iOS & Android): The Kenwood Remote App is an application for Apple iOS 8.0+ and Android OS 4.4+ that controls the Kenwood receiver like a wireless remote control from your compatible Apple iOS device (via Bluetooth or USB) or Android device (via Bluetooth only). The Kenwood Remote App provides traditional touchscreen control, as well as directional and freeform gesture control from your compatible mobile device.

  • Source Information & Control: The Kenwood Remote App provides a Source Control screen with a list of the receiver's built-in sources and connected sources to choose from, so you can change the head unit's source from your mobile device. Once an input is selected, the app displays source information such as station number, track number & playback time, as well as song/artist information (when applicable). From the the app, you can also seek stations and tracks, as well as Play and Pause your music.
  • Audio Settings: From the application on your mobile device, you can adjust the receiver's volume up or down. In addition, audio settings such as EQ, Crossover, DTA, and other audio adjustments can be easily set using the Kenwood Remote application.
  • Media Player: The application's Media Player screen lets you playback your device's stored music library through the Kenwood receiver. From the app on your Apple iOS or Android device, you can control basic playback functions like Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track and Repeat/Random. The Android version of the app even lets you browse your music library by category (Song/Album/Artist/Playlist/Mood). Song, artist, and album information (along with Album Art) will displayed on your Apple iOS or Android device's touchscreen.
  • App Launcher (Android only): The App Launcher feature of the Android version of the Kenwood Remote app lets you access 3rd party applications within the Kenwood Remote app's user interface. The App Launcher can contain up to 24 of your favorite apps for quick access.
Notes:
  • You will need to indicate within the head unit's menu what type of device (Apple iOS or Android) you'll be using the Kenwood Remote App on before the application will connect and function with the receiver.
  • When using the Kenwood Remote App with your compatible Apple iOS device, the application and device must be connected to the receiver via Bluetooth (not USB) for playback of Bluetooth audio. For playback of a USB-direct connection from an Apple iOS device, the device and application must be connected to the head unit via USB (not Bluetooth).

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow) within the included wiring harness that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately).

Q
Does this head unit send crossover and equalizer settings the to rca outputs front and rear?
[ Malaki  Apr 21, 2019 ]
3 answers
A
Any sound or modification of sound will be transmitted through the rca outputs.
[ curtis  May 31, 2019 ]
A
I am not sure I understand your question. The unit has separate crossover controls to set the HPF for the fronts and rears, and LPF for a subwoofer. If your concern is limiting heat regarding an amplifier, yes it would be occurring prior to signal being sent through the RCAs. Because crossovers can be configured without an external amp this must be occurring in the internal circuitry prior to signal to its own internal amp as well.

Yes. Crossover settings are available for both. Equalizer settings however would be for both but not independently. Crossover is available independently for front and rear

Only a guess but if no sound having tried all those options it would be two things. Bad connections to speakers, or bad harness could test speaker wires for connectivity by sending a signal thru them. Lastly check to see if muted at receiver. Good luck
