Music on the go, the Excelon way

The Kenwood Excelon DPX793BH CD receiver gives you big controls, a big 3-line display, and big music variety. If you love radio, this receiver offers a built-in HD Radio™ tuner, an option for SiriusXM, and Internet radio control using your smartphone. You can use Bluetooth with aptX® to improve the sound quality of your streaming music with compatible devices. And once you've picked your music, immersive tone controls let you zero in on just the right sound. Kenwood backs this receiver up with their Excelon Series 2-year warranty.

Lots of radio

HD Radio

The DPX793BH lets you enjoy HD Radio from participating stations. When you're tuned in, you'll hear FM that's close to CD quality or AM that comes in clear and static-free. And if you're not in an area with HD Radio stations, don't worry — this Kenwood's sensitive radio tuner will pick up local analog stations, too.

Using the controls on the receiver, you can access your favorite Pandora®, Spotify®, and iHeartRadio® Internet Radio stations from your iPhone or Android. You can also check out the incredibly deep programming and nationwide coverage offered by satellite radio by adding a SiriusXM tuner.

Get added clarity using Bluetooth with aptX

In addition to streaming audio with Bluetooth, you can pair your phone with this Kenwood for hands-free calling. If your Android™ is Bluetooth aptX-compatible or your iPhone® stores AAC files, you'll enjoy clear, CD-quality music streaming. For the times when you have to share the ride, the DPX793BH enables you to pair two Bluetooth-equipped phones and quickly switch between them — handy for vehicles with more than one driver.

More music options

In addition to playing CDs, you can connect a portable music player to the front aux input, and the front and rear USB ports can handle thumb drives loaded with MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV, and even high-res FLAC music files. You can also play, control, and charge select Android phones, an iPod®, or an iPhone plugged into a USB port.

Shape up the sound

Use the 13-band equalizer and digital time alignment to adjust your music to sound great in your vehicle. Kenwood's Drive EQ boosts specific frequencies to help overcome road noise that can drown out your music. The three pairs of RCA preamp outputs send a clean, high-voltage signal to any outboard amps in your system, and you can adjust the audio levels and crossover points for these outputs.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our articles about Bluetooth profiles and streaming music using Bluetooth with aptX.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

Great sounding and too many features!

Crutchfield customer from Laguna Niguel, CA on 1/20/2019

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This thing sounds great. I'll start with that. The setup menu built in is vast. And, there are things in it not well explained that I can't make sense of. For example, you can set tweeter crossover frequency but the unit does not have separate outputs for woofer and tweeter, as far as I can tell... so what does this do? Lots of other settings, but no good details on them. I guess just play with them and listen what sounds best.

Pros: Installation went easier than expected. Unit sounds great (using preamp only - plugged into the car's premium separate amp system)

Cons: There are a lot of sound shaping adjustments without much information on them. There are some that make no sense to me - speaker tweeter crossover, for example. Menu selection knob is hypersensitive - easy to dial past desired selection. A remote is mentioned, but none supplied. Is that an optional purchase?

The optional wiring harness, was exceptionally worthwhile! Great sound quality! My daughter loves the ability to change the color of the display (red is her favorite, as it matches the rest of the dashboard and control colors!

Pros: Fairly easy to remove the old unit and to install the new unit, for anyone mechanically inclined. Pictures were very helpful!

Cons: Some one-time options are buried deep (i.e. fade and balance)

a decent system for the money.

Pros: Good sound and function. Great color schemes.

Cons: Some of the install instructions or should I say wires are not called out and their descriptions are vague. Many of the features don't seem to be working with my 2010 Chevy 2500HD Bose system, but I have not had time to spend figuring it out yet.

Great classic HU for the price. Has a lot of options which are somewhat easy to navigate. Paired these with some new Kenwood speakers and everything sounds great. Installed this myself on my 07 Pilot Ex w/o nav and it was pretty easy with the install instructions and kit Crutchfield sent. Once installed everything looked clean as if it came directly from the factory. Definitely, recommend buying the Easy Harness which makes everything Plug and Play especially with the steering wheel adapter. Only minor complaints - source scrolling on only one direction and the screen is hard to see in the sun.

Pros: Easy install, recommend Easy Harness Microphone sound quality EQ options

Cons: Barely a Con - display hard to read in the sun Source selection

For the price, this radio is packed with features. I don't give it 5 stars because it takes way too much attention (and distraction from the road) to manually tune to a station. It needs a manual tuning knob or a direct entry method without having to use the remote.

Pros: Bluetooth rear and front USB port

Cons: Manual tuning requires multiple button presses to get there No direct station entry method without remote Fader and Balance are buried deep in the controls

My new Kenwood is performing very good. It doesn't take as long to come on as I had read in some reviews and the sound is outstanding. It integrated very well with my existing subwoofer and speakers and the install was easy. It took more time to remove the old unit than to install the new one and the extra money spent on the ReadyHarness made that possible.

Great option for replacing the radio in a 2006 Sienna with a receiver that provides hands-free calling, USB ports, and extra power for speakers running without an amplifier. The receiver looks really good but the display should be brighter for easier viewing in bright days.

Pros: Reasonable price, looks good, and hands-free calling.

Cons: Display should be brighter.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you like really being able to dial in your sound, especially if you have a sub or something, this is a great option. There are so many audio controls make anything you hook to it sound its absolute best. It also looks fantastic in my older car with other digital displays and the ability to change the colors to pretty much anything you want is a great touch. For the price it has more options and features than it has any right to. The only downside to that is that without a touchscreen it is a little archaic trying to move through the plethora of options. I also like how it saves most of your personalized options into non-volatile memory so you dont have to set up everything all over again if the battery is disconnected. The only thing you have to reset (if you want to) is the calendar and I think time as well. The HD radio is nice and I specifically wanted that but apparently HD stations in my area have fallen off considerably since I last had it so I dont use it as much as I intended to. I was also unable to get the Pandora bluetooth to work but maybe i need a subscription for that or something. There is so much to this head unit and normally I would say thats a plus but if you arent an audiophile i feel like you wont use a lot of whats here and could save some money by getting a cheaper version of it. Also it picks up a lot of glare so if you dont have tinted windows it can wash out at times. Using a light color on the LCD during the day helps a lot.

Pros: Very customizable with color choices, sound setup, and you can even turn off sources so that certain ones that you dont use dont show up when you cycle through them. Extreme amount of features for the price. This is the most loaded head unit I have ever had, though it isnt the most expensive Despite having tons of features and being relatively cheap, everything works really well. remembers most of your settings even if completely powered down.

Cons: Might actually be too much radio for some people. If you are a plug and play kind of person and preset EQs are fine for you, then you miss most of what this thing can do LED lights can wash out in daylight Tons of features without a touch screen. Some things are not intuitive at all to get to and you are unlikely to find some features without reading the manual. Not enough space in the review fields to really tell you what this thing allows you to do to dial in your sound.

My wife had a shaker 500 that went bad. She claims she has to have a radio. Money is a little tight and I found this Kenwood on Crutchfield's website it was inexpensive and sounded great on paper. I wasn't really expecting a top shelf radio. I was pleasantly surprised it sounds great and it didn't cost a fortune. Wiring kit was included saved me even more. Really easy to do myself and it looks professional. I did have a question about the wiring. Thought I would be on the phone for an hour. I had a service tech on the phone in less than a minute problem solved in 2 minutes. They will get all my business from now on

Excellent Design & Performance Value

John from Rincon, GA on 10/19/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The DPX793BH is head and shoulders above the last few single & double DIN units I've purchased. Being double DIN, there's more real estate, and Kenwood made good use of it with larger buttons and an overall easier-to-read face. What makes me most happy though is that Bluetooth pairing is as easy as it gets, and it consistently & reliably reconnects to my iPhone 6. A far cry from the disappointing Sony unit this replaces. It feels as though Kenwood put real thought into both the design and how people use their stereos nowadays.

Pros:

Cons:

Worth considering, especially at the price point!

Robert from Campbellsville, KY on 10/17/2018

2006 Honda Odyssey
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, I'm happy with this unit. The advanced tone controls (13 band EQ, crossover, time alignment, etc) allow for the ability to "tweak" around the less than optimal stock amp and speakers that I've kept in the van. There is a slight lag when using the steering wheel controls - I reprogrammed my existing adapter, which worked instantly with another head unit. Actually thought something was wrong at first, due to the lag. The lack of a dimmer wire seemed as an oversight, but once I found the "dimmer time" function, I prefer it over the traditional "dimmed while the lights are on" mode. I often have my headlights on during the daytime (for safety), and it's great that this unit will dim during the time span specified, rather than following the lights. My one major complaint is with "Source Select". When switching sources, the unit does some kind of animation and STOPS RESPONDING to the controls for a few seconds. You have to rapidly switch between sources, then wait for it to switch to the selected mode. If you're a little slow to the draw, you'll find yourself waiting while the unit does whatever the heck it's doing. I've owned dozens of aftermarket radios over the years, and have never run into this before. This issue was nearly a deal breaker for me, but after a week's use, I've adjusted enough to deal with it. Considering the price (on sale), I'll give a solid 7.5/10.

Pros: - Advanced tone controls (EQ, Crossover, ETC). - Bluetooth works great with my iPhone X. - Loads of color options to match most factory lighting.

Cons: - No dimmer wire. (BUT setting dimmer time can be a PRO) - Slight lag when using steering wheel controls. - Source select is "clunky". - Remote app works, but feels kludged together.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

2005 Ford Mustang GT - Mach 1000 System. Pay crutchfield the money to have them pre-connect the radio and custom wire harnesses. It is not difficult to do...but it takes forever. Once those wires are together you can install this thing in an hour. Unit works great. The 12v to 5v converter is a must to eliminate the amp "pop". The system is very user friendly. It sounds better than the stock unit. The variable color illumination is excellent as it can be matched to the MyColor system that changes the color of the instrument cluster. I purchased the sirius xm adapter and placed on the rear deck under the back window. It is UNDER the deck carpet/cover and I have zero problems with reception. Since the antenna is under the rear deck carpet it was a piece of cake to then route the wire behind the Driver's side rear seat trim panels and then under the driver's door kick panel and then up through the dash. I don't know about the microphone yet, as I haven't tried it. However, I routed the wiring under the center console and then stuck the microphone (has adhesive tape on the back) on the inside of the center console storage area. If you are like me and don't plan to use Pandora, IHeartRadio, or whatever else the unit allows you to turn those features "off". When "off" you no longer need to cycle through all of those potential sources. So instead of needing to press source 6 times to get from HD radio to satellite radio I only have to press it once.

Pros: Variable Illumination Bluetooth Satellite Radio Great Sound Quality User Friendly

Cons: It doesn't serve me bacon while I'm driving.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am extremely happy with this new Kenwood receiver. The Bluetooth works perfectly with my iPhone SE. I also have all the features I could ever want if I choose to expand my sound system. I previously had a touchscreen receiver but I couldn't justify the cost of one with the level of features this Kenwood has. My only nitpicks are these. The knob is kinda shallow for my hands to turn. Making EQ adjustments are tedious. I also wish aftermarket manufacturers would make stereos that were matte in finish so they would be more factory in appearance. But those are small things. This is a great option for any vehicle.

Cons:

Excellent value, packed full of top-quality features!

Stephen from Lutz, FL on 10/6/2018

2006 Toyota Corolla
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an excellent unit compared to similar ones offered by Kenwood and other manufacturers in this price range. The DPX793BH gives you the best value per dollar with built-in HD Radio and Rear USB input. Coming from a previous Kenwood single-DIN receiver with a separate iPod adapter, this was a nice upgrade to be able to easily link via Bluetooth to the iPhone in my pocket which contains my entire music library. The 3-line display is a big advantage over similar units (apart from DVD receivers) as you can see the source as well as track name and artist all at once. Sound controls are above and beyond with ability to fine-tune the EQ, bass boost, loudness, as well as q-factor and even more detailed controls for sound reconstruction. The display looks awesome with hundreds of colors. I love the hands-free calling addition to my 12-year-old Corolla and Siri control of my iPhone. The only negative I've experienced is with the Bluetooth connection sometimes cutting in and out, especially after some kind of interruption like taking a call or turning the car off and back on without resetting the Bluetooth on my phone - that is a bit frustrating at times but if you use USB you won't have this issue. Nothing else to complain about, this unit is EXCELLENT and for the price you can't beat it, especially with all the features packed into it.

Pros: Value, range of features, sound control, flexible connectivity, 5v pre-amp outputs

Cons: Bluetooth connection sometimes cutting in and out while listening to music

Great tuning & we love the extra HD channels!

Crutchfield customer from Huntsville, AL on 10/1/2018

2009 Honda Odyssey
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was really pleased with the sensitivity of the radio. I am a licensed amateur radio operator and amuse myself by trying to see which distant AM stations I can get after dark. We live in North Alabama and can get 650 WSM (home of the Grand Ol' Opry) out of Nashville and 780 WBBM out of Chicago pretty easily. 720 WGN out of Chicago is always tricky here, but this receiver gets it. (Please note these are AM stations, don't expect FM to perform like this, FM performs entirely differently.) I like the flexibility of the interface and was very pleased that the Honda "black box" (Crux SWRHN-62B Wiring Interface) to keep the steering wheel controls working upgraded us to be fully functional. As they were with the options package the Honda had, the tuning would only go to assigned buttons from the steering wheel. Now we can actually tune from the steering wheel, which is nice if you travel a lot. I would highly recommend getting the "Crutchfield ReadyHarness Service" option where they pre-crimp the radio cables into the vehicle specific connectors. Unless you really enjoy figuring out the difference between a purple-grey cable and a grey-blue cable, just spend the money. Over all, a very spiffy experience with Crutchfield and Kenwood.

Pros: Very nice interface options (brightness, colors, etc.) Excellent sensitivity (tuning) (Yay Kenwood) Radio is HD (bonus "hidden" radio stations in most cities)

Cons: Cluttered screen - A lot of buttons and silk screened text that takes some learning. Functionality is actually pretty simple, it just seems like it could be simplified a bit. The app is odd - I was hoping it would let you pre-program stations to the buttons, set the time and date of the radio, adjust the display content and color, etc. Basically overcome the cluttered front face of the radio. But it seems to not offer much more than the standard Bluetooth or USB interface.

Budget friendly

2007 Chevrolet Silverado (New Body Style
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The receiver did dramatically improve the sound of my truck speakers. I am currently running Polk DB+ 652s (so that did help with the sound quality). Bluetooth connects quickly and rarely skips. There are quite a few options to change the speakers but once I figured them out, I can't complain about audio quality or loudness. The display is easy to read even in broad daylight. The controls are easy to use but the radio didn't work properly immediately after setting favorite stations, it did figure itself out the next time the receiver was selected. I have not used the USB function or the Android software so I can't comment on either...

Pros: Easy install, highly visible, great sound, Personalization capabilities

Cons: Installation instructions

Kenwood's DPX793BH two thumbs up!

Les from Calgary, Alberta, Canada on 9/23/2018

2007 Pontiac Vibe

I recently purchased this unit through Crutchfield and I'm must say I was impressed with their service. Great communication and tracking assistance. It took a mere 48 hours to receive my unit. When I received the unit I was over joyed by Kenwood's looks and build quality. To be safe I purchased all of Crutchfield's accessory suggestions to replace my old factory head unit in my 2007 Pontiac Vibe. It's display had burnt out. It was daunting at first to see the number of accessories supplied but I used every last part. I have read that some people only spent 1.5 hours to install but I ran close to 4 hours. I had to tackle some additional technical challenges. Basically, I had to convert the Kenwood's speaker outputs to line level to match the Vibe's factory amps and subwoofer. I had to call Crutchfield's support line for advice and they did not disappoint. Other than that, the install was straight forward but I took my time to ensure I didn't damage my dash or the Kenwood. After the final connections and putting the dash back together, I had blast off. The colourful Kenwood came to life and the sound was better than expected along with useful features, like Bluetooth, HD radio and the customized colours to match your dash colours or not. Nice touch. Overall I'm very pleased so far and recommend this unit highly.

Pros: Excellent sound, great features, excellent customization

Cons: So far I can't identify anything as a deal breaker.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound (through Bose speakers) and features for a fair price. The display on this Kenwood is much brighter and easier to read than the display on another (single DIN) Kenwood that I have. I didn't think I would have use for the rear USB but found that I can pull it through to my glove compartment and keep a second USB full of music ready to go. This makes it easy to keep different genres of music separate. The HD radio sounds better than regular analog, but I rarely listen to radio anymore. The CD player works fine and reads all sorts of different music files. Overall I'm very happy with the unit! I wasn't terribly impressed with the Crutchfield installation instructions. Things that may be obvious to an experienced installer weren't mentioned (like to remove and disregard the metal sleeve that comes around the unit and use the plastic mounting bracket instead). Nonetheless, I took my dash apart, removed the old head unit, installed the new one, and put the vehicle back together again in about an hour and a half. (This was my second stereo install).

Pros: Features Sound Quality

Cons: Installation instructions

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had originally bought the most affordable bluetooth stereo I came across at a big box store, $60. It worked most of the time and got the cassette deck out of my 2003 crv. After almost a year of using the cheapo unit it was time to upgrade. This kenwood deck makes my rockford 6.5" door speakers scream! The increased sound quality from aptx blue-tooth is immediately noticeable. As usual I regret spending the money earlier on a cheap unit and should have done my homework and bought this Kenwood receiver from the start. As always Crutchfield was fast and reliable.

Pros: better sound, higher volume, colors, dimming, controls, warranty.

Cons: none as of yet

I am very pleased with the radio for my 2004 Grand Am. It looks great and sounds great, even with factory speakers. The installation only took me about and hour and half, with no issues. I can see the display very clearly, with no glare. It is a perfect choice for the upgrade I was looking for.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I will say that it's hard to get the right functions that you want in the package you need with the vast array of variables that exist in electronics today. When I bought this radio, I only had two requirements - HD Radio receiver and Radio Data System, at an affordable price in a form that looked compatible with my car. Anything else would just be awesomeness. For the two items I required, this head unit does. Haven't been able to utilize HD radio yet - my opportunity to try it out on a road trip was quashed by Hurricane Florence. But it picks up RDS fine and displays the data much like the OEM head unit this one replaced. The biggest surprise to me was the quality of the audio. With just 4 OEM 6 3/4" speakers in my car, this head unit has so many ways to equalize and bass boost, not to mention vehicle size calibration and all kinds of other goodies to make the output of the sound really freaking great. And, at night, the display can be customized to come pretty close to your ambient vehicle colors. I use a two tone orange and it matches my dash gauges almost perfectly. With Crutchfield's installation guide and included bezels, installation was an absolute breeze. The only thing I needed were 14 connectors. It looks sharp and practically factory in the car. Audio quality varies greatly. One equalizer setting may work with one FM station perfect, but be horrible for another. Spotify, Pandora BT & USB doesn't work right with Android 9.

Pros: Ambient light settings are cool. Sound quality can be made really really good. Decent call and Bluetooth quality, BT connectivity good with phone, but not services like Pandora and Spotify. Looks sharp. Extremely customizable from cabin size, to speaker/subwoofer size and locations. It ain't Chinese junk.

Cons: No "one-touch" mute button. Hitting the know takes you to a function menu. FM modulation can be irritatingly unstable. Spotify & Pandora functions don't work with Android 9 on my Pixel 2 either on USB or Bluetooth. USB is only 1A for charging (really?!?) USB Front/Back only good for charging (slow at that) Custom EQ settings get reset as soon as you pick another Menu items don't match instructions all the time. Really confusing at times.

Very happy

Nice unit. I have used Kenwood as an after-market replacement in another vehicle. This on has HD built-in, which is nice for enhancing free radio. The install was a bit hectic, mainly because I had to cut out an metal bracket before this would fit (this was disclosed on the Crutchfield site) and I elected to wire everything up on my own. That said, the recommended additions were exactly what i needed to get the job done.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I haven't purchased a car stereo for a very long time, so I was shocked that something so nice looking could be so inexpensive. I mainly bought this for the ability to go hands free calling and, after a couple weeks, this has been awesome! The installation was super easy and because I paid for Crutchfield to wire the harness for me, I didn't have to strip and connect anything. Coupled with the kenwood 6 inch door speakers, it sounds really nice. They've got this DIY thing down pat. Next project will be a small sub and amp for some depth to my sound, and thanks to Crutchfields instructions, I have confidence I will be able to install it myself!

Pros: Display, ease of use and adjustments, lots of choices for settings, easy to install, fit 2014 Nissan Versa Note perfectly, hands free calling with ease

So, I bought the Kenwood DPX793BH after hours of research comparing specs and reading reviews. I tend to take my time on decisions like this because I hate returning things and having buyers remorse. I also consider myself to be an audiophile so even though the price point was low I didn't want to sacrifice my ears. It turns out I'm not sacrificing anything! This head unit delivers the goods! Quality of everything I play is stellar. The Bluetooth connectivity and provided microphone are huge improvements to my previous setups. BTW I did the install myself in under 2 hours and I've never done one before. It was easy peasey with the provided brackets and wiring harness. Crutchfield provided detailed instructions was only a phone call away but I never had to call. The HD radio is great and pulls in stations my old stock radio could not. Overall I could not be more satisfied. I'm taking the long way so I can enjoy more tunes!

The Kenwood is replacing the Honda OEM 6 CD premium stereo and the Kenwood has plenty of power for my needs. Simple installation replacing the storage compartment on my 2003 Honda Accord EX. The Crutchfield "ready harness" is worth every penny in terms of time-saving and ensuring accurate wiring. The large display is easy to read and is visible in the daylight. It pairs easily to 2 phones and sounds great. I recommend spending the money on the ReadyHarness service. It made installation easier. Reference the Kenwood owner's manual for the steering wheel control connection (it's the light blue/yellow wire) because Crutchfield doesn't make this connection for you. I made 2 calls to Crutchfield technical support during installation (regarding the SWC connection) and they gave me incorrect information each time.

Installed in a 1997 S10 BLazer. It is a great CD receiver. I think you can order a remote separately. There are few display features I would have liked to see on the DPX793BH that were on the DPX792BH. (Listed in the Cons section). This is not meant as a deterrent from purchasing the DPX793BH. Not at all. Only personal preference from expereince with the DPX792BH. Like the previous model the DPX793BH is capable of fine tuning the sound to your liking. The PROS outweigh the CONS by far. Crutchfield provides all the support you need for easy installation. Including if needed (wire harness, wire, connectors, advice. etc.)

Pros: -Looks and sounds as good as the DPX792BH. -HD radio. -RCA outputs for Sub-Woofer and expansion of system. -Change-able color LCD display. (2 zones) -Fine tuning sound. (Example:set speaker size, crossover frequency, bass boost) -Kenwood Excelon products have 2 year warranty for parts and labor.

Cons: -No remote. Order seperate. -Does not display graffic equalizer on front LCD Display. DPX792BH does. -Manual EQ only shows band frequency number and +/ - 9db. -The DPX792BH shows a bar graph for manual EQ adjustment with the bar of the frequency being adjusted flashing. -The display brightness is still weak in some settings.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a really nice head unit and I would recommend it very highly. It is for that, and that only that I have given it a 5 rating. However I have to say that the installation hardware and associated instructions for my particular vehicle were less than satisfactory - with particular regard to the instructions. This caused me to call for a clarification, which in turn was incorrect. Specifically, the wiring adapter and instructions were correct, with exception of where and how to attach to a corresponding steering wheel remote wire - this was resolved by a phone call to the manufacturer's tech service. Even more troublesome was the trim piece - which one to use - how and which tabs to remove. Instructions actually provided two contradicting answers, and a call to your tech service provided a third. None were correct as each instructed me to leave two remaining tabs which prevented the trim piece from recessing to its designed front level. The fix for that was to set the head unit's side mounting brackets rearward, allowing the trim ring to recess properly - but this then prevented the vehicle's cover panel from fitting. The correct solution in this case was to remove all tabs from the trim piece and attach it to it's designed space on the inside of the cover panel. I used black plastic electrical tape to accomplish this, but the use of a proper adhesive would work as well.

The radio is everything I wanted. It is a way to listen to audiobooks while we travel using either USB, Aux or, most likely, our Android and Apple phones. The User Manual, however, could have been clearer. Perhaps manuals should be checked by people who have never programmed one of these devices to see if it's more confusing than helpful. Thankfully, there's a PDF online so at least the print can be made larger. The one problem I had (nothing to do with the Kenwood) was that there was no accessory wire from the ignition switch on my 2016 Ford Transit Connect xl but I was able to work around that by installing a shut off switch on the dash kit.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The installation went very easily thanks to the custom wiring harness, and excellent instructions. I did call Crutchfield twice. The first time to ask why only 2 or the 3 multi pin connectors in the car we used in the install. The tech told me that's all that was needed. I was skeptical, but he was right! The second call was due to a problem with the unit changing sources sporatically. The tech, Ed, said it sounded like a firmware problem, found the newest upgrade, emailed me the link, along with instructions for installing it. It all went off without a hitch. Great service, and I loved the wiring harness with the steering wheel controls. It made it all so easy, and so, so much cheaper than what the local car stereo place wanted to charge me to install a unit. Everything fit, and it looks great.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This head unit exceeded expectations. First off, it sounds WAY better than the stock unit, even when we tried it with the stock speakers still in place. But the best part is how EASY it is to program. It is incredibly easy to program, WAY easier than the unit in my wife's Audi. For the price I paid, it exceeded all expectations. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five, is that it's actually a little TOO easy to program - my wife accidentally entered the programming mode while trying to answer the phone and I had to go back in and fix it. But that's a minor niggle, and as we become more familiar with the controls that will cease to be an issue. This is a low end unit, and as long as you keep that in mind you will be very happy with it. It doesn't sound as good as the Bang and Olafson unit in the Audi, but it's WAAAAY better than stock, and has plenty of power to drive four power-matched speakers at non-showoff volume without needing an amp. After linking my phone, it accessed my phone's contact list with no problem, and I was able to program 3 speed dials into the unit in less than 10 minutes, even counting the time to read the instructions in the manual. As far as the install, the Metra wiring adapter they included was a perfect fit. I soldered the connections to the Kenwood wiring harness, and it plugged into the stock system with no modifications needed to the stock wiring harness. The dash kit did need a little trimming with the dremel.

Pros: WAY better sound than stock LOTS of functionality - phone, bluetooth, LED color selection Extremely easy to program, very intuitive

Cons: A little TOO easy to program - you have to be careful not to accidentally change your settings.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed as a replacement for the factory head unit in my 2001 MR2 Spyder. Love the sound quality, bright display and layout. I'm using an external amplifier (Vibe Light Box 2) to power Morel's Maximo 6 6.5 component speakers -sound is amazing for such a simple setup. Compered to the Pioneer DEH-X8700BH I have in my Miata, this unit has much better display, layout and a more logical setup menus. Pioneer has better tuner (both HD and regular FM). Also, for some reason I can't connect both BT phone and USB (i.e : play music trough USB and make/receive calls trough BT using Iphone 7). Overall a great unit that I highly recommend. P.S. this is for a separate review but Morel's Maximo 6 speakers are just incredible!

Pros: Sound quality, display, menu and setup.

Cons: Very slow switching between sources. Pioneer has a better tuner.

Amazing product! So worth it!

Pros: Bluetooth , aux, usb for charging or playing! Looks modern and sleek with lights. Has HD radio and regular and last but not least it comes with three months free of pandora premium.

Cons: I personally have none for this product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fantastic. Sound quality is very good. I primarily use Bluetooth and it sounds excellent. Connects every time. (My old unit only connected about 30% of the time). Call quality is also very good. I like having physical controls as well (I replaced a touch screen head unit, I didn't like it). HD Radio also sounds crystal clear. The only negative thing I can think of. Out of the box there was an emergency alert. Until I turned the feature off, it would constantly switch to Radio mode. Once I turned off the emergency alerts, it has worked flawlessly.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent radio, good features and great sound. Only downside, and it seems silly to mention but it's such a large part of this particular product, is that the big nob in the center (to do everything) is EXTREMELY cheap and flimsy plastic. The nob actually cheapens the entire radio, which I have fond little other to complain about. Some "genius" in marketing at Kenwood saved about $0.10 per radio to manufacture by replacing the original, I'm guessing metal or aluminum nob with a cheap piece of plastic. It's a shame, because otherwise I like just about everything else, the radio, features, sound quality, eq, extras all exceeded my expectations.

Pros: -sound quality -features -eq (15-band, get the sound you want and kill the centers!) -HD radio built in -easy connection to phone -multiple connection possibilities (front and back usb, aux, rca, etc)

Cons: -Huge flimsy plastic nob

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very satisfied with this Kenwood. It has a ton of features for customization, from the display to the sound. My Samsung syncs flawlessly but gets batty when plugged into the USB for music, however in BT mode it played music stored on the phone without a hitch. (the app doesn't play well with S6 edge). Love the HD radio. Had a few calls disconnect while in BT but soon realized it goes private for some unknown reason, pressing hands-free on the receiver brought it back. Very Satisfied

Pros: Bluetooth, HD Radio, tons of customization and ease of installation due in part to the FREE installation gear Crutchfield sent.

Cons: Occasional BT phone disconnection

2011 Nissan Titan
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a classic styled button and knob type double din. So far so good on this unit. Once you get the hang of the menus it is actually relatively easy to use. Great sounding receiver! I really like the preset equalizers that you have to choose from. The other audio settings are also great there's a lot you can do to customize the sound. The custom color options make this a pretty cool unit as well. The Bluetooth works very good I've noticed some drops from time to time but overall it is above average. The unit has more power than I expected and pushes two JBL six by nines to six and a half and two tweeters in my Nissan truck very well. The bass is pronounced. Probably my favorite feature is the XM radio tuner that has the ability to scan 18 of your preset XM stations and it uses the buffer 2 really make listening to sirius convenient. My only issues with the unit are that with Some of the menus they could do a little better on as far as giving you more information. For example when you're listening to XM it always says the word live on line number 3.... why couldn't they put another line of information there such a song title or artist name? I wish there was a way to combine favorites for sources for example why not have the ability to have presets that have HD radio and XM in the same set of 6 pre-programmed? Also I will say I am highly impressed and glad that I got this model that has HD radio it is near CD quality I was really surprised.

Pros: Price, simplicity, Sound

Cons: Kenwood app is not that good

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit mainly for the HD tuner and hands free phone feature. Tuner works great and sounds amazing! However, the volume in hands free calling will not adjust from the default 15. I was truly looking forward to this feature but can only use it when sitting still as I can't hear it above roaf noise. Overall easy enough to operate and program settings, just have to sit still with the manual for a few minnutes. If the volume problem can be overcome, I would be happy to give it 5 stars!

Pros: Overall good unit with exceptional sound

Cons: Hands free phone volume issues. Can't increase it from default 15.

Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth 3.0: The Kenwood Excelon DPX793BH is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (ver. 3.0) allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

  • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.6 (Hands Free Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
  • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.5 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Kenwood Excelon DPX793BH. Visit Kenwood's Support Site for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

SSP & USB Pairing: With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Kenwood Excelon DPX793BH without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. You can even pair your Apple iPhone (iOS 5+) or Android smartphone (running Kenwood Music Play App) by simply connecting it to the Kenwood head unit via USB and following a single prompt on the head unit's display. In addition, Android (OS 4.0+) smartphones that have Near Field Communication (NFC) pair simply by touching the Android device's NFC tag to the NFC tag on the head unit's front-panel.

  • Dual Phone Connection: Thanks to the Dual Phone Connection feature, two Bluetooth-enabled phones can remain connected to the Kenwood receiver. This means you can an answer an incoming call from either phone from the head unit. Also, both of your phone's contact lists are downloaded to the receiver. To make a call from one of the phones using the Kenwood receiver, you simply have to select Phone 1 or Phone 2 on the head unit's front-panel.
  • Music Mix: The new Music Mix feature allows five Bluetooth audio source devices to be connected to the Kenwood receiver at one time, so you can switch between Bluetooth playback sources a lot easier and quicker. While "BT Audio" source is selected on the head unit, you can simply press the music playback button on your connected Bluetooth source devices to switch between devices and begin music playback. However, you cannot stream audio from two different Bluetooth audio source devices at the same time or combine music libraries or playlists from two different connected devices.
Note: You can pair up to five Bluetooth-enabled devices to the Kenwood head unit. When an already paired Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units.

Bluetooth Hands-Free Communication (w/ External Mic): The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The controls of the DPX793BH can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

  • Answering a Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. You can answer the call from the head unit's front-panel controls, or setup the head unit to automatically answer the incoming call immediately or after 1-30 seconds. The DPX793BH also supports the Call Waiting function, so you can answer another incoming call while suspending the current call you are on. Your compatible cell-phone must also support this feature.
  • Dialing a Number: Using the DPX793BH, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:
    • Enter Phone #: Allows you to directly dial a phone number up to 32 digits from the head unit's control knob or remote control.
    • Preset Dial: Allows you to register up to 6 phone numbers for quick dialing. The preset numbers can be accessed from the head unit's front-panel controls.
    • Phone Book: You can download phone book data from your mobile phone to the DPX793BH. You can then dial a contact within the phonebook from the head unit's front-panel controls. Contacts are categorized as Home, Office, Mobile, Other, or General.
    • Call History: The Call History is a list of calls that have originated from and were received by this unit that you can dial. You can select Outgoing, Incoming, or Missed calls.
    • Voice Dialing: If your mobile phone supports voice recognition, then you can dial out by voice command. Simply speak into the included microphone.

External Mic: The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the volume level, noise cancellation, and echo cancellation of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 10' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone offers an integrated mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash.

Wireless Audio Streaming: The Kenwood Excelon DPX793BH supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone or audio player. You are able to stream your stored music library on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, as well as music apps downloaded on your smartphone to the Kenwood Excelon DPX793BH for playback.

  • AAC & aptX Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the DPX793BH offers support for AAC and aptX codecs for higher quality audio streaming from select Apple & Android devices. By supporting AAC, the DPX793BH offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad. aptX audio coding technology provides even better sound quality with lossless, CD-quality streaming for compatible aptX-compatible smartphones, like many Android smartphones with OS 4.0+.
  • Advanced Music Browsing: In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat), the DPX793BH lets you browse your stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, etc. (AVRCP 1.4 phones only; which includes Android 4.0+ and iPhone 5.0+).
  • Song/Artist Information: The head unit will also display your stored music and music app's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title (not compatible with all apps).
Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control: When paired and connected to an iPhone with Siri via Bluetooth, the Kenwood Excelon DPX793BH has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. Simply press-and-hold down on the head unit's Answer Button to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the DPX793BH and its microphone. You even can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone with Siri. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

Note: The head unit's display will only indicate hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Kenwood Excelon DPX793BH; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

Android & iPhone Integration

Android Open Accessory 2.0 (AOA 2.0) Connectivity: The Kenwood Excelon DPX793BH's front- or rear-panel USB port lets you connect select Android (OS 4.1-7.1.2) smartphones that support AOA 2.0 for music playback. Kenwood does not guarantee operation with all Android devices, regardless of operating system. There are two Android AOA 2.0 modes to choose from based on what content you want to listen to and how you want to control it.
  • Hand Mode: The Kenwood Excelon DPX793BH supports Android Open Accessory 2.0 (AOA 2.0), which lets you connect your Android smartphone (OS 4.1-7.1.2) to the DPX793BH's front- or rear-panel USB port and listen to stored music and music apps from your Android device through the Kenwood head unit. You'll be able to control basic playback functions such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track. Other advanced music navigation will still be done from your Android smartphone's touchscreen. In this mode, the head unit will not display song/artist information; only "Hand Mode" will show up on display. You'll continue to view song/artist information from the Android device's touchscreen. You'll also still be able to access other functions and applications from your Android smartphone's touchscreen, while listening to music through the head unit. If you make a call or answer a call from your smartphone while listening to music in this mode, the music will pause until you are finished with the call and then start back up again.
  • Browse Mode (via Kenwood Music Play App): Downloading the Kenwood Music Play app onto your Android (OS 4.1-7.1.2) smartphone with AOA 2.0 support not only allows you to listen to stored music from your Android device through the Kenwood CD receiver connected via USB, but it also lets you browse your Android smartphone's music library from the head unit's front-panel controls. You can browse your store music library by Playlist, Artist, Song, Album, or Genre. The contents of a Playlist or Category can be searched alphabetically or numerically; you can even skip through the stored music files in specific increments (0.5/1/5/10%). You can also control Play/Pause and Previous/Next track from the head unit. In addition, the head unit will display song/artist information. You can exit the Kenwood Music Play app to access other functions and applications of your Android smartphone, while your stored music library is still playing through your head unit. If you make a call or answer a call from your smartphone while listening to music in this mode, the music will pause until you are finished with the call and then start back up again.

iPhone Direct Connection: The Kenwood Excelon DPX793BH's front- or rear-panel USB port can be used to connect your Lightning Apple device or 30-pin iPhone 4S to the head unit. The USB connection allows for playback of stored music and music apps on your iPod or iPhone through Kenwood receiver. If you have a newer iPod/iPhone with the Lightning-connector, you can use Kenwood's Lightning connector-to-USB cable (113KCIP103 sold separately) or the Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the DPX793BH. If you have an iPhone 4S with a 30-pin dock connector, you can use the dock connector-to-USB cable that comes with your Apple device or a 3rd party "Made for iPod/iPhone" certified dock-to-USB cable (sold separately) to connect your iPhone 4S to the DPX793BH.

  • Head Unit Control: From the head unit's front-panel controls you can search for stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, and Composer. The contents of a Playlist or Category can be searched alphabetically or numerically; you can even skip through the stored music files in specific increments (0.5/1/5/10%). The DPX793BH also supports Repeat (file/all) and Random (album/all) playback functions of stored music on your iPod/iPhone. In addition, you'll be able to control basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track) from stored music and select music apps streamed to your iPhone. You can also choose to control your Apple device from its own touchscreen, instead of the head unit.
  • Song/Artist Info Display: The DPX793BH will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information such as Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album title.

Smartphone Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1.5A of current to power and charge your connected Apple iPod/iPhone or Android smartphone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position (if your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it).

Note: HD Radio is the system for digital AM and FM broadcasting in the U.S. More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. Go to HDRadio.com to check for HD Radio stations in your area.

I have had Kenwood Stereos since the mid 80s. Bought my daughter a DPX503BT for Christmas and love the features and sound. Decided it was time to upgrade my DPX303 that I have had in 2 different vehicles now. The expandability of the DPX793BH was just what I was looking for and a good price point. I recently upgraded the factory speakers to KFC-P510PS and KFC-1665S along with adding a KSC-SW11. All the changes have brought my 02 Bravada to a whole new level of class, sound and clarity. This is going in a Jeep Wrangler. As much as I would like a higher end system, I wouldn't feel safe leaving it when I have no doors or roof. This model is loaded with higher features but it is not a flashy lcd screen saying steal me. I like clear pure audio. This system has HD radio, reads FLAC files, and also offers aptX which my phone supports. These features alone is what sold me on this radio. [ Derek  Apr 08, 2018 ]
I like Kenwood decks this has good reviews and all the features I was looking for in a receiver. Plus Crutchfield has good prices, good customer service, free installation accessories, and quick shipping! [ William  Mar 28, 2018 ]

Fried my current head unit with a ground problem. Considered replacing it with same new unit. Comparisons showed some better features in the updated model, just out in January 2018. Ryan on staff was very helpful answering questions in my pros & cons evaluation of my current model vs. this new model. Took the leap on this one! Hope it works... [ Donald  Mar 13, 2018 ]
Price, connectivity, to match the look/colors of my dash and I have a similar model in my truck. [ KEVIN  Mar 02, 2018 ]
I chose this radio because it was the best non-touch screen Double Din Receiver I could afford. I chose non-touch screen because it theory, installation should be easier. [ Timothy  Feb 12, 2018 ]
I have had good experiences with Kenwood audio products and wanted to upgrade my car's radio to an HD tuner. [ Joshua  Jan 12, 2018 ]

10 questions already asked

Mine is for a 2005 Ford Explorer, yet to be installed (things happen). My response is that I don't understand if the auto lamp feature is a Dodge thing or a Kenwood thing. I'm only suggesting that others might not know either and stall other responses. [ DUNCAN P  Jan 10, 2019 ]
I sorry, but I do not know what an "auto lamp" is. [ RICHARD  Jan 10, 2019 ]
Is this a question or just a complaint? Aftermarket radios typically always require an extra module as well as a new antenna for the satellite radio to work. [ JARED  Jan 01, 2019 ]
I am just a customer, like yourself. You'd have to contact Crutchfield directly. [ Chris  Jan 01, 2019 ]
Not that I know of!!!! [ JASON  Dec 31, 2018 ]
No. Prior to 2004 GM stereos were 1.5 din. So you would need a single din and an adapter kit. [ melissa  Nov 25, 2018 ]
Sorry I don't know. I bought it for a Hyundai Sonata. Crutchfield would know more. Ask them. [ Yia  Nov 24, 2018 ]

yes, with my phone it works great (Android). i use it constantly. to be honest the interface of the radio is extremely poor, you have t cycle through every input to get to what you want (so to go to radio you have to hit 'SRC' about 7 or 8 times, waiting each time for the new input to load). this app lets you switch by a single button push. it also makes the Eq settings easier to change. [ Gregory  Oct 08, 2018 ]
Greetings Travis, the app does work however on my Samsung 7 edge it can get pretty buggy. When i plug into the front usb the app automatically launches to play music from the phone but quute often it freezes the app. I now use a third party app from the store and control it from the head unit. Hope this hepls. Good luck on your purchase. [ DERRIC  Oct 07, 2018 ]
Yes but its very basic. [ Igor  Oct 07, 2018 ]
Yes it does [ BRENT  Oct 07, 2018 ]
Hi Brian. If your looking to buy this kenwood excelon don't hesitate. Worth every penny. Had mine for several months now. [ Brandon  Oct 01, 2018 ]
Why are you asking a question when you don't have a question? [ Robert  Oct 01, 2018 ]
I can't answer because I do not have XM equipped on my vehicle. Sorry. [ RICHARD RYAN  Aug 19, 2018 ]
I don't know, I don't use that platform, however it does on iheart and HD. That's what I use. [ rodney  Aug 15, 2018 ]

Now, at this point press the return button just to the left side of the volume knob and this will exit from FUNCTION menu. That should do it for you. Hope this helps. [ Theresa  Apr 03, 2018 ]

I don't use the USB. I mainly stream music and play from my phone library. [ Jose  Apr 04, 2018 ]
