HD Radio

Lots of radio

The KDC-X799 lets you enjoy HD Radio from participating stations — it's almost shocking to hear FM that's close to CD quality or AM that comes in clear and static-free. If your memory's not what it used to be, you can tag songs that you hear on HD Radio, then buy them later online. And most participating stations send out secondary programming, giving you more choices when you're in the mood for radio.

Using the controls on the receiver, you can access your favorite Pandora® and iHeartRadio® Internet Radio stations from your iPhone or Android. You can also check out the incredibly deep programming offered by satellite radio by adding a SiriusXM tuner to this Kenwood. There's nothing better than finding a great SiriusXM station, then listening to it all the way through a long trip.

Getting more out of Bluetooth

In addition to hands-free calling with Bluetooth, you can pair your phone with this Kenwood for wireless audio streaming. If your Android is Bluetooth aptX-compatible or your iPhone® includes AAC files, you'll enjoy clear, CD-quality music streaming. To get Bluetooth running quickly, simply plug your Android or iPhone into the USB port and the receiver will pair automatically. The KDC-X799 includes an external microphone, as well as gain level, noise reduction, and echo cancellation settings, so callers can hear you loud and clear. iPhone users get voice control when pairing an iPhone that offers Siri.

Other options for music

You can also satisfy your music fix with the receiver's CD player, or by connecting a portable music player to the front aux input. The receiver's front-panel USB port offers direct control over a connected iPod or iPhone. You can also play, control, and charge select Android phones that are plugged into the front-panel USB port using the receiver's built-in AOA (Android Open Accessory 2.0). And if you have MP3, WMA, AAC, or WAV music files on a thumb drive, the USB port can handle those too.

Sound and display

Three sets of hot 4-volt preamp outputs maximize the performance of any outboard amps in your system, and you can adjust your subwoofer level and the character of your bass. Once you've got your music selected, you can use the 5-band equalizer and EQ presets to adjust the sound in your vehicle. You can also adjust the variable-color display so this Kenwood looks right at home in your dash, while dust covers protect the CD slot, aux input, and USB port.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our articles about Bluetooth profiles and streaming music using Bluetooth with aptX.

I bought this to replace the notorious dead radio in '03-'07 Honda Accords. Installation and setup was straightforward. Sound was better than the stock radio.

    Pros: Good sound.

Cons: Display not as bright as I would prefer.

Good replacement stereo for a 6 year old JVC unit. Nice features for the price. Good sound.

Pros: Control Pandora from the unit. Excellent telephone Bluetooth connect ability for telephone calls. Very good sound quality of telephone calls. Nice color adjustability of the display.

Cons: Display is way too dim and easily washed out by anything brighter than overcast skies. No way to increase brightness past full max, so unit is practically unreadable during the day--no joke. I knew this going into the purchase given many other reviews describing the same issue, but decided to purchase the unit because of need/price point/Crutchfield expertise. Volume knob is difficult to grasp with gloves on--too slippery. Display of songs/artist/album is cheap.

Pretty early on I had decided I wanted a head from this kenwood line. Once I found the model that included BT phone features and had HD radio I had the radio head I wanted. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is I find it pretty much impossible to read the deck during the daylight even on max brightness.

Pros: Sounds fantastic, easy to install subwolfer to it. Many features.

Cons: The face while having a lot of options for color choice and 31 levels of brightness is not bright enough to make out during the day.

Was looking to have all the smart phone connectivity of the modern OEM audio systems. This unit has it all, plus a great sound upgrade from the factory radio. HD Radio is crystal clear. BT connection was simple and works with all my audio apps. Phone integration is great - the external mic allows discrete and optimum placement for clear calls on the road. Enjoying all of my old favorites as well as the latest streaming content. Fantastic value.

Pros: Loads of connectivity. Great HD sound. ExtensI've sound shaping features.

Cons: Buttons are a little crowded, menus a bit techy, but the manual is clear.

Nice enough unit for sound quality and performance, but it's user interface is poor and bordering on dangerous while driving.

Pros: Installs easily and quickly Great sound - HD radio is really impressive Lots of features

Cons: Limited display brightness - even at max setting (31), it's difficult to see in daytime. Impossible to see when wearing sunglasses. Clock display is tiny Pushing the volume knob does not turn the unit off, rather it takes you into the setup menu. Once in the setup menu, the volume control becomes inoperative. This can be VERY distracting. Be aware. The buttons for selecting the radio stations are tiny. I guess they want you to use the remote.

This is a great head unit. Good value with all the features that I wanted. It looks nice and fits into the dash of my BMW

Pros: The HD tuner sounds terrific. The CD player is also very clean. The built in amp drives the speakers in the car well.

Cons: When I match the display color to the lighting in my BMW it isn't bright enough. I have found it difficult to use the built in equalizer to get the sound that I want.

ColinC from New Hampshire on 11/29/2015

    2001 Mazda MPV

    Verified customer (What's this?)
    Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I purchased this to upgrade an older Kenwood radio. The installation was simple and easy. The customized instruction sheet sent by Crutchfield was very helpful. The radio itself is beautiful, easy-to-use, and sounds good with my factory speakers. The power output is a bit higher than my older model and I like that. The main complaint that I have is the quality of the display. It is beautiful at night, dawn, dusk, or on a cloudy day. Unfortunately, for anyone who drives in the daytime and enjoys driving in sunny weather, disappointment is at hand because the display is almost invisible during the daytime. I have tried all of the color options and brightness settings but nothing helps. My old Kenwood had similar issues but it had an additional menu setting to reverse the display (they called it positive/negative). Kenwood really needs to fix this issue on future models. If you read through other comments on Crutchfield, many others have had the same complaint. The only other complaint I have is that this radio was designed to integrate with Android and iOS devices. The USB connection however only outputs 500mA. This is enough to slowly charge a modern phone if the phone is not being used, but not nearly enough power when the phone is turned on and used as a GPS device with the screen powered up. Ona long trip, the phone battery will die while plugged in. Attn: Kenwood product design -increase the USB to 2A to avoid this.problem.

Pros: Easy to install and use. Great sound quality, intuitive operation. Looks great at night.

Cons: Display is impossible to see in the daytime USB power output is too low

I chatted with an advisor while making my purchase decision and his advice was spot on, he was honest and candid about what options made sense and what were worth paying for, very happy customer.

    Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Receiver does everything I expected it to as far as the sound goes. My 2001 Corvette has never sounded better. I wish I had paid more attention to the reviews talking about the legibility of the deck during the daylight. It is impossible to see on a sunny day. At night and on overcast, cloudy days it's great. But on sunny days when I like to drive this car I just have to kind of randomly hit buttons or stick with one source. I love Kenwood but they need to fix this interface.

Pros: Great sound. Easy install. Good support.

    Cons: Illegible display.

The display is to dim to see in most daylight conditions even when set to the brightest color which is white. I'm also having Bluetooth connection problems and have as of yet to find out who will help me with this I got my phone to pair with the stereo but every time I reconnect I have to go into my settings and disconnect the profile for streaming audio and then reconnected and then the sound will come through. I find the menu driven control system cumbersome to deal with maybe that's because I can hardly see the display when I'm driving

    Pros: Great sound and features

Cons: Display to dim and Bluetooth connection problems

The only thing I dont like is the screen can be hard to see sometimes in the sunlight but the sound quality is top notch!

Pros: Sound quality is good, & has some great features.

Cons: No individual bass or treble adjustment. Only has preset ex adjustments. You can manually change everything except bass & treble individually. Has 5 (eq?) bands, but directions give no clear instructions on how to use the bands at all. Very confusing. Also own Kenwood KDC-X798 which is a better deck in my opinion

For the money, it should have a better display, not a simple LED digital display that have been seen on car radios for 20 years now. Other than that, it's a great unit and does exactly what it's supposed to. The USB port reads USB drives quickly, so you do not have to wait for what seems like a couple of minutes when you insert a new USB drive. HD Radio is crystal clear.

Pros: Sounds great, drives the new Infinity speakers exc exceptionally well with minimum distortion. (No appreciable distortion before ear pain sets in!) Lots of configure-ability and setting to tweak. Hassle-less installation

Cons: Could use more bands on the EQ, maybe a simpler interface for the settings. Not immediately user friendly, but makes sense after a couple of days of use.

This is the third head unit of this type that I have installed in our cars. 2008 Ford Crown Victoria, 2005 Nissan Titan and now 2011 Nissan Xterra. Each time I also replaced the speakers with similar cost point speakers from Kenwood. The bottom line is the sound output is good and certainly adequate enough for the cars mentioned. Bluetooth works great, sound quality for the caller and listener is the best I've heard even compared to the factory system in our Mercedes wagon. The only issue is it does take some time to learn all of the internal programing (but I am 51 so it may be easier or more intuitive for somebody younger) and the display is a little hard to read in the bright sun even with changing the color and contrast. Great Buy.

    Pros: great sound, perfect bluetooth

Cons: head unit a little hard to read in sun

I've always known Kenwood as a quality name. This unit seems to about as solid as any I've installed in the past. The install was a breeze with the included harness adapter. I prefer to solder the connections for the best results. It only took about ten minutes. Once the radio harness and the adapter were made I took the old radio out(another after market that was just outdated, no BT or USB). My car only has a couple quick connectors and a couple screws holding the center console all together, so it only took about 20 minutes until I had the unit powered and making tunes. I don't have any desire to shake the block or anything so this unit has plenty of power for my needs. I like the ability to choose the color of the lights, I think there are about 20 options plus customize mode. The Bluetooth connection was simple and quick. I use my android as my music machine. I just get in the car and it connects automatically, I even pick up where I left off when I disconnect. My biggest drawback is the buttons are a bit small and the labeling is hard to see when you are driving. I have pretty much memorized the ones I use most, but it can be difficult if you want to do something you aren't used to. I also went ahead and signed up for the free Pandora One upgrade. It works pretty flawlessly if you are into that. I also used the Kenwood music app with the USB connection. It works pretty well too. Haven't even tried the cd player yet cuz all my music is on my phone.

Pros: Nice clean look, cool background colors, Easy wireless connectivity, Easy installation

Cons: Small, hard to read buttons

I like this system. The reviews that say it is too dim, they are half right. If you use the light blue it's not too bad. Has great quality. I have a slight issue with it always playing the first song every time you plug it in, doesn't matter if it's a play list or just the first plug in. Don't know if that's an iPhone thing or a deck thing. But it's a minor nuisance.

Pros: Looks cool Sounds great Awesome equalizer.

Cons: Always playing first song A little dim, not too bad.

Installed in a 2002 Jeep Wrangler that is used by my 18 year old son - I'm not a real audiophile. It had the key things I thought he needed. Bluetooth phone support and complete USB and Bluetooth Iphone compatibility. We have Iphone 6s, so it had to have latest firmware, which some other brands surprisingly did not have. Crutchfield did a great job knowing that and knowing in detail the specific vehicle install requirements. Sounds good, and works well, but it fails the "intuitively obvious to use" test that Steve Jobs had, and my wife shares too. I may be able to simplify the number of options it presents (don't need to see Iheartradio option or unused Sirius option as you scroll through SRC menu). I like the Pandora options, but it works differently when your Blue Tooth connected than direct connected. Also, didn't need the CD player (my sons generation can't spell CD) but couldn't find a model that included all the other features but w/o a CD player. The 1.5 DIY (sp ?) slot wouldn't accommodate a full display model which might have simplified this. For us now older people, the tiny little buttons on the unit are not visible without switching to reading glasses - my son probably can read them but I have to really study them. So, for this unit installed into a car with 120k miles its fine, but I'd probably have tried a little harder to find a simpler one if I were looking again. My son is grateful for it in any case since the OEM radio was broken.

Pros: Compatible with latest Iphone tech. Good sound Completely modern connectivity for BT and with standard USB to Iphone6 connection - charges well

Cons: Wish it were simpler. Small buttons and knobs with very small labels.

I'll start off by saying that I am coming from a Kenwood Excelon KDC-X794 that I have been using for probably 4+ years. I mainly bought this new head unit to get bluetooth functionality in my 04' Dakota quad cab. The HD radio is also a nice plus. The sound quality is excellent. It is on-par with the old Excelon unit. There are quite a few things from the old unit that I miss in the new one, though. For example, the ability to display the clock in a large format. From what I can tell from my use with the new X799 the only clock that I can get to show up is on the small second line of the display. Another feature that I miss is the automatic dimmer function when the headlights are turned on. The biggest thing that I miss is the tweaks that can be made to the audio settings. On the old one there are a plethora of settings, such as vehicle-type selection, time alignment, speaker selection, and much more user-friendly filters. From what I have seen with the new unit you can apply a HPF from 100hz+, but with the old one it was much more flexible. Also, you could apply different filters for both front and rear. The display itself was very easy to customize, too. Overall, the X799 is a great unit, but it would have been nice if Kenwood kept the features from the old Excelon unit.

Pros: Sound quality. Variable color display. Bluetooth built in w/ mic.

Cons: No dimmer wire to connect to vehicle headlights. Not nearly as many audio tweaks as my old X794. Display could be a little brighter. No way to show the clock on the large line of the display.

I am likely to return the unit. While the sound quality is very good, the cons outweigh the pros.

    Pros: Lots of features.

Cons: 1) The display gets completely washed out by the sun, and I've tried every color of the rainbow, including white. 2) Using the system requires excessive button pressing of very small buttons. 3) The FM sensitivity is listed as very good, and it does a fantastic job pulling in far out stations. However, only the strongest of signals comes in clearly. I am surprised at how local stations seem to get static.

Excellent product! Went on Critchfield's online site, entered the information necessary and decided on the Kenwood product. I did have some questions and the staff at Crutchfield were extremely helpful in confirming my decision. I had the unit installed just before I went away on a trip. Can't say enough about it!!! I went from just a factory installed AM-FM CD unit to the Kenwood with, of course AM-FM CD, but also SateliteXM, Pandora and Bluetooth. Wow what a positive change in my listening enjoyment! The Kenwwod sounds so fantastic, the ease to be able to select just about anything I want to listen to was awesome! I love it and would recommend it to anyone! Thanks Crutchfield staff!

Got this as a replacement for an old Kenwood that did not have Bluetooth Audio streaming capabilities.Easy to Swap out , just unpluged and reinstalled in five minutes. This has more audio adjustments, choise of face color, and Bluetooth works flawlessly. The sound is better than expected. FM reception is fair, don't listen to AM so I would not know about reception. Nice simple display. No flashing lights to distract or annoy at night. I do not buy for Coolness Factors I just need certain features that make Driving more enjoyable and safer as I travel more than 45,000 miles a year. The curved face like the old stereo is nearly impossible to see in diect sunlight, and display washes out. Menus are bothersome to me as are all current electronics, I miss the simple dials and selectors. I may try another brand that has a flater display screen with a brighter display.

Great Stereo! Regarding the display lighting, it could be brighter. I found the best way around that was to make the color white, the same color as when you are in the menu. To do this , select the RGB option and dial up R,G,and B to 9. Sound quality and volume far surpasses the stock HU in my 2011 Subaru WRX. Bluetooth exceeds the sound quality of the stock Bluetooth. Love the customization of the stereo, some people reviewed negatively on this. My personal preference is always to allow the user to customize. Sub outputs work great and I love the ability to adjust just the Sub-woofer.

Pros: Lots of options. Great sound quality. HD/digital Radio does sound better(than normal/analog radio), if your station has that option. Bluetooth quality and range is much better than stock radio.

Cons: Could have a brighter display.

Much better than the clarion I used to have. The tuner is very sensitive and the HD radio is a fun novelty for me. The install was simple and the instructions were perfect.

Pros: Better than the Clarion. The time stays visible when you the radio is turned off (this is an optional setting). HD radio is cool. You can choose the LED color or allow it to vary. Bluetooth syncing with my iPhone 6 was easy and worked immediately. The Bluetooth phone connection works great.

Cons: I love this radio and. would definetly buy it again. But there are a two small cons; The display is not bright enough in direct sunlight. It's ok most people f the time, but if the sun is directly shining my on the face of the unit it hard to read. iTunes automatically starts when you plug in the phone, sometimes I want to just charge when I am listening to the radio and this means I have to reselect "radio" Again, both small issues.

Researched this unit as a replacement for my stock unit in my 14 WRX. I read the reviews and made the plunge. I made the purchase about 5 weeks ago and have waited to make my review to be sure I had enough experience to be fair. 1. HD Radio sounds great, when in range. I live 20 miles outside Cleveland and find thet it goes in and out 60% in, 40% out. Very upsetting as the analog sounds terrible. My wife has a Chevy Traverse with stock HD radio and never has this issue. 2. I cannot receive 1 singe AM station, nothing. 3. I can confirm that the screen is impossble to see in the daylight. No matter what color you select, white is NOT one of them and completely washes out with the sun. 4. BT audio works great for music on your device, I have an Iphone6 but sounds terrible when streaming Pandora. Pandoa is a selectable input but has to be used with the USB input and the sound quality vastly improves. I prefer no wires which is why I wanted a radio capable of streaming BT audio. 5. Crutchfield says that the steering wheel controls can be used with thei unit. This unit has no aux imput in the rear that is necessary for this setup to work. you could run the cable to the front if you wanted that plugged in all the time. 6. mic for the BT phone works well and is clear. Overall, very disappointed with the purchase. I now have a radio that is marginally better than stock that uses an external mic and that I cannot read during the day.

Pros: HD sounds good when connected. Easy intall. Looks good at night. Fast BT connection. Many sound options with EQ's and bass boosts.

Cons: Unreadable during the day. need wires for good internet streaming sound. Weak tuner both AM and FM.

    Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Purchased for a '04 BMW 325CI, had it professionally installed, should have read deeper into reviews before purchasing. The display is illegible, even in low light (overcast conditions), doesn't matter what color you make the display or level of brightness. The head unit has a thick rounded protruding clear plastic plate over the display which appears to catch all ambient light which makes it illegible. What I can say on a positive note is that (in the dark/evening) the radio sounds great and has excellent features (when you can actually see the display). If your dash has an incredibly large overhang and or inset area for the head unit it might work for you. Crutchfield has been excellent during this transaction, allowing me to return and purchase a different unit (Alpine CDE-164 BT)...which has a straight face with no (plastic light catcher) over the display, which is highly legible.

    Pros: Great Features

Cons: Unusable because you can't see the display.

Definite improvement to the stock radio in my 2008 Toyota Avalon. I bought this instead of going with a satellite radio.

Pros: Easy setup, worked good right out of the box syncing with my Bluetooth phone apps, Pandora, and iHeart Radio on my HTC One. The changing colors of the display give it a coolness factor at night. Cell phone operation is especially good.

Cons: Would have given 5 stars for ease of use except display difficult to see in daylight. Needs to be brighter and equipped with a non-reflective plastic cover. The operating knob is a little hard to turn since it is so smooth, would benefit from rubber or ridges on the circumference.

I replaced my KDC-X595 with this unit because I wanted a hands free phone function. The KDC-X799 has many great features at a very low price. The sound quality is very good. It really made my single 10' sub sound great. The audio adjustments are a little different than my older Kenwood model so I am learning the operations. I have an iPhone and the Bluetooth connection was very easy to establish. I do not listen to radio much, but the HD radio sound goods. As others has stated, the display brightness could be improved. The display seems to be more readable in the Green3 setting than in other colors.

Pros: The unit was easy to install because it replaced an older Kenwood head unit. It has great sound and Bluetooth at a low price level.

Cons: The display brightness can be better. The finish seems to get more finger prints than my other Kenwood.

The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X799 was an upgrade in a 94" Chevy K1500 factory Stereo... then again anything is an upgrade in that truck. Crutchfield provided everything needed to install the Kenwood. Installation was very easy and painless.. Sound Quality is great after hooking up a pair 20 year old 100 watt Pioneer Speakers I had lying around (really makes them scream) the factory speakers are just way too small for this beast of a stereo. Definitely will be upgrading the speakers soon. Overall I'm very happy with the purchase of this stereo. Thinking about slapping one of these in my old 89" 240 too.

Pros: Sound Quality, Bluetooth connected to my Ipod Touch 4, Connected to my Iphone 4s and a Samsung 4 can hear the phone call great over the speakers, Great color options and rotation , flash drive, plenty of power, sound adjustment, Picks up radio stations over 100 miles away (we live in BFE) good value for the quality & features, Installation was easy and very Fast shipping from Crutchfield.

This is a great improvement over the factory stereo. It sounds so much cleaner. The features of this component are really nice. I like the color changing as far as aesthetics. but the sound is really solid.

Pros: many features, Bluetooth, flash drive, plenty of power, many options on sound adjustment.

    Cons: none opbserved yet.

Kenwood Excelon KDC-X799 IS Everything I wanted

Pros: I upgraded from a lower Kenwood model I bought 2½ years ago. I wanted the HD radio built in. Pros: HD radio is better then I thought, USB, Bluetooth. The phone functions work flawlessly. The microphone, people tell me I am more clear then when I actually use my cell phone. The color settings are great. I like the personalization.

Cons: The navigation is a bit much to get through but easy enough to set it and pretty much forget it. Only thing I would have liked is a rear USB on this radio.

    '03 CR-V Great Upgrade

    Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Bought this as an upgrade from the stock receiver in my '03 CR-V EX AWD. Installation was easy. I was sent the HONK 282 mounting bracket and a harness from Crutchfield. When I installed the head unit into the mounting bracket I used the plastic parts that came with the mounting bracket rather than the metal sleeve that comes with the head unit because it could be screwed in to the mounting bracket and it seemed a little more stable than the metal sleeve. When I installed the system in the car I propped the whole assembly up to the dash to see what tabs needed to be cut using my Dremel and cut them, rather than trying to use the instructions sent with the kit, because the instructions weren't very clear. The receiver itself performs very well, but I'm far from an audiophile. Like others have said, it's a liitle tough to see in BRIGHT sunlight, but far from not at all visible. It definitely pumped up the performance of my stock speakers, which I will be replacing soon. All in all, very pleased with my purchase and with Crutchfield's customer service.

Pros: Fast shipping (Crutchfield) Great power boost for stock speakers Nice customization Bluetooth and other functions work very well

Cons: Less than great visibility in direct sunlight Could have quicker access to certain menus like preset EQ's

It was nice to replace my OEM stereo in my 2002 Silverado. The unit looks good with the exception the display is difficult to see unless you are driving at night.

Pros: Great sound, connects me to satellite radio, hands free works with my Blackberry Z30

Cons: Display is too dim. There is no way to display the clock in context with other displays. Would like a more rubbery feel to the outer rim of the volume / selector knob.

This head unit made all the difference in our vehicle. The HD receiver works great and picks up the stations well. So far no complaints at all. The upper level adjustments could be a little easier to get to, but it seems all new head units are this way. All in all I am very satisfied with this purchase.

I will have to say that I wasn't sure about the install, but this turned out to be the easiest install I have done in my life. With the install kits from Crutchfield, I had this installed in about 20 mins. This deck has excellent sound and a lot of great features. It even worked and controls my 1st gen iPod Touch. As stated by others, this deck has a lot of features and does take some time to setup the sound/audio setting for each source, but once that is setup, your good to go.

Pros: Easy Install, Great Sound, Lots Features & source options, Even works with the 1st gen iPod Touch

Cons: Audio setup takes some time. Display is sometimes hard to see in bright light.

This thing is amazing. It has plenty of power to run 4 speakers and with RCA jacks to feed a separate amp for the subwoofer it takes care of everything. Takes a little while to learn, but that's mostly because it can do so much. Great sound. Many options. And of course it's an easy and professional looking installation in my Safari van with the installation package from Crutchfield.

So now that I've had a few days with this receiver I've decided I like it a lot. It sounds good and generally looks good. However I have a few problems that perhaps a call to tech support will help resolve. I've found that when using Pandora on my LG G3 I have to turn on 'Enable Automatic Launch' which is fine. However when I get back into the car the receiver will just say 'Check Device' even though the phone shows Pandora is linked. So I have to exit Pandora on the receiver. Then turn off 'Enable Automatic Launch' on my phone. Then reselect Pandora on the receiver. And Then re activate 'Enable Automatic Launch'. And then it will work again. A bit of a work around and again something that a call to tech support may fix. Only other issue is very dim screen. During the day it's hard to read with brightness turned all the way up to 31.

Pros: Great Build Quality. Good Looking. Sounds good. Great feature set.

Cons: Some link features are a little wonky. Screen Brightness isn't bright enough during the day.

This is a 'so far' review. I have only used this unit for a short amount of time. I do like it so far, but due to the fact that the speakers I ordered didn't fit I am limited on how much I can say at this time. I like the general looks of the unit and I like it for ease of basic functions. I am not at all fond of the LED since you can't see the screen in daylight (early evening or nighttime, etc it is fine) I think I would however recommend this as a good value. *I wanted to keep my wife's car original but the OEM head unit just wasn't easily available so I had to make a change since my search came up empty. Bottom line 'so far' if you want a good value unit this seems to be a nice choice.

Pros: Generally easy to use. Clean general look in the car.

Cons: LED, while quite nice at night, is pretty useless in daylight. (note: I like the unit and will be keeping it, but this one aspect is not good)

The stereo is very good. I've had Kenwood stereos in the past and this one meets the quality expected, which is very good. One annoyance is while the second row of display text for the artist name is a nice upgrade, it's limited length truncates most names, so it falls into the 'so close, yet so far' category. Frustrating. My main grievance is with the Crutchfield configuration tool. Yes, the unit FIT in my car, but what I didn't realize was the exception that it doesn't work with he stock amp. Tech notes [bypass required] alluded me during the purchases process, so I was left with the choices of, return the unit and start over, skip the amp and direct wire to the speakers or buy an amp that worked with the stereo.

    Pros: Good quality Clear sound

Cons: Menu system is okay, but a little klugey

This is a great stereo. All of its functions are easy to find and the Bluetooth was quick to pair with my phone. The sound quality is great and it looks great in my car. I wanted a unit with a multicolored display and the red is a perfect match with the rest of my dash/control lights. I read some other reviews about the display being difficult to see in the daytime. This is true but you can still see it enough to make out what is on the screen and I may not have even noticed that if I wouldn't have read the other reviews. Just as a test, I consciously looked at the Pioneer head unit that I have in my other vehicle and it's harder to see in the daytime too but I never even noticed until now. The only reason I gave the build quality four stars (still good) is that the stereo seems loose in it's cage. It has a very small amount of play if you push on it on either edge. It does not move at all when pressing any of the buttons - just on the outer left and right edges (I don't even know why I pushed on it there but I did and it moves just a little). Other than that, I'm 100% satisfied. Great stereo.

Having owned an X797 in the car I just sold, I knew what do get when I bought the X799 to install in my new (to me) car. The sound quality was miles ahead of the JVC receiver I was replacing. The speakers came to life with the x799. The display was hard to read in the daytime, but since I play music randomly from a USB flash-drive, it's not that big of a deal to me. It didn't hurt that I was already familiar with the controls, so I have no qualms about them. I'm eager to check out the new sound quality features Drive EQ and Extra EQ, which made me buy this ahead of the flagship x998.

Like the KDC-X998, sound quality is about the only thing this product has going for it. If you only drive on cloudy days or at night this radio will be fine. Like the KDC-X998 the display is almost impossible to see on a sunny day. After reading more and more reviews that stated this was a known issue I decided to give it a try anyway. With this being my second Kenwood receiver within a month I decided to contact Kenwood directly regarding this issue. To keep this review short enough to actually read in full I'll just skip to the end of that conversation. Kenwood rep actually recommended I purchase a "third party" anti-glare sticker to place on the display. I'm a dedicated Kenwood user so I'm disappointed, but not giving up yet. Since my attempt to return this product directly to Kenwood failed, I turned to the great reps here at Crutchfield. Lets hope my third attempt at upgrading my factory radio is successful. I may not be able to recommend Kenwood at this time, but I definitely recommend Crutchfield. Although this has been a huge inconvenience for me, they have made sure that I am satisfied with my purchase. Kenwood should take note of the Crutchfield Team's customer service record.

    Pros: Sound quality.

Cons: Display is almost impossible to see on a sunny day.

Installed in my daughters truck to replace the original OEM AM/FM/Cassette which is 1.5 DIN size. Everything functions as expected. The display is rather basic but tells you most of you need to know. Most of the limitations are due to the smallish 1-DIN size but the selection of 1.5 DIN units is very limited.

Pros: - Hands free phone quality is good in both directions - Has a clock - Like the color selections and colorful show at power up/down. - Works with iPod PA446LL/A 30 GB 5th Generation - loudness, EQ, etc. can be uniquely adjusted for each source.

Cons: - Buttons are too small - Clock display too small - USB playback works but have to scroll through a bunch of NA File errors even though only compatible file types are installed. - Display brightness does not change with the rest of the dash.

I have a 14 year old Corvette and was trying to figure out how to add in ipod\iphone\bluetooth connectivity. The stock radio had poor bass response and no hd radio as well. The receiver was the best cost effective solution. That said I was still surprised at how well it did everything. I placed the mic on my sun shade and called my brother for a test. After configuring the noise, echo and gain adjustments he said I did not sound like I was on a mobile device nor could he hear the car at all... which is fairly loud. I also purchased a rockford fozgate sub amp and woofer. So much control over how the sound is distributed. I was able to move the bass to the sub from the small 6.5 inch door speakers and now I no longer have distortion at higher volume. I really like how I can remove things from the menu for example I removed Pandora, iHeartRadio and Aux so now I no longer have to go thru those when I cycle thru the list of sources. Very nice customiztion options.

Pros: Amazing quality for the phone connection. Really cool to just say, Hey Siri, call my wife.

Cons: The Kenwood iPhone app for iHeartradio isn't functional. Better to just go BT connection.

Easy installation, decent manual, very good audio fidelity. Display is not too Vegasesque. I'm running this through the Saab factory Nokia amp (via line inputs). I first tried a Nakamichi unit that suffered from poor performance and ground loop noise when installed per mfr instructions. The Kenwood instrux were slightly different (grounding) and it works like a charm. I haven't tried the BT phone calling feature yet, but everything else is great. NOTE: I did not need the line output converter that Crutchfield strongly recommends, but I also am a bit of an electronics hacker - I'm not afraid to experiment (and it paid off!).

Pros: Clean, quiet sound; sturdy construction

Cons: CD drive is a little noisy when first powering up (load/eject mech); glossy display can be a little difficult to see easily in bright conditions (all modern HUs all like that).

The only thing that holds me back from giving this 5 stars across is the dimness of the display. Even on the brightest setting the display is easily washed out by daylight. Otherwise an excellent product.

Pros: Button station tuning - not just joystick.

Cons: Dim display - needs to be much brighter to be daylight viewable, especially in a convertible.

Simply put, this is a great bead unit.

Pros: Pandora, I heart radio, bluetooth, USB port and aux cable port. Sound options/tuning, plus the hands free phone setting and remote mic. Phone mic is very clear as well. Also has a cool little remote control with lots of functions.

Cons: One source button and you have to push it through all options to get where you want.

Great reception, Switching from mode to mode is a bit slow and clunky. Sound quality is bright and spacious, I'll have to play with the settings some more and hopefully will get the fullness I would like. Bluetooth for the phone is excellent, both for me and the person I'm calling. Plenty of customization of colors and features. Super value. The only bad thing is that it's very hard to see the display due to the glossy surface of the display. My unit is in a pickup and with the rear window up high during the day it's very hard to see the readouts. It could really use a matte or some other type of non-reflective surface. Very annoying. Fortunately this is in my second vehicle and I don't have to deal with it everyday.

    Pros: Great sound and features.

Cons: Switching from mode to mode is slow. Display glare is very bad.

I really don't think there is a need to go higher end than this unit. It does anything you need or want it to do. If you look at the specs, what else could you ask for? Sure, a better display might be nice in 2015 but, it does the job. It's not the easiest unit to use on the fly while driving but, i'm sure the more you get used to it the easier it will become. It pairs extremely well and easily to your phone (of any kind) and i pod, etc... You can dial the color display in well for just about any dash, the sound quality is excellent, it will play just about any type of format you can throw at it, it has 4V out for quality amp use, ... bla bla bla... it does everything really well. Just be prepared that tuning it takes a bit of time and if you need to tune it on the fly, not so easy. Also, the days of Bass, Treble, and Mid range adjustments are gone. It's not that easy. Loud on or loud off ... nope. There is loud 1, loud 2, loud 3 etc. A whole lot of control with this thing. Get the unit, put it in ..and I bet you'll be impressed regardless. I don't think spending extra money will get you anything else except for maybe a fancier screen or dancing EQ lines or something. All around Kenwood did a great job concentrating on sound quality and hitting all of the needs and wants of today's enthusiast.

Pros: Sound Quality, Many adjustments to get it really dialed in, plays any format of music you own

Cons: Screen could be a little better for those people that like really fancy displays, (a pro and a con... A lot of not so easy adjustments,

I have been really pleased with my Kenwood products over the years and this new unit is no exception. The sound quality is punch and clear. The only draw back is the display during the day. The reviews that I read prior to purchasing this receiver mentioned/warned of it, but I decided to go with it anyway. It's not a deal breaker for me, but it is inconvenient at times. The reflective nature of the polished plastic surface reflects and glares during the daylight hours. The brighter out it is, the worse the glare. Know this is it's downside before you make your purchase and ask yourself how import it is. For me, it is still a great unit and a purchase I am happy with.

    Pros: Quality sound. Function features.

Cons: Display quality during the day

A lot of good things to say. But I'll focus on some minor issues. When playing through USB, it can often say "NA Files" even though you have Valid mp3 files. Your OS may write hidden files to your memory stick. Find and remove hidden files and folders and then it will be much better experience.

Pros: Great way to add cell phone hands free Bluetooth. HD audio. Front USB audio input. The manual doesn't say it, but it Does charge your iPhone through USB cable. Yes, you can use a cable you already have. You don't have to by Kenwood's cable.

Cons: Small dial and buttons. Changing audio source feels sluggish. Cell phone Bluetooth audio adjustment can only be set when you are actually on a call.

Crutchfield install kit made it incredibly easy. Last car stereo I installed had an 8-track. Please include the crimp connectors though next time guys. Everything works well and the stock speakers Never sounded so good. It is really like hearing them for the first time- With a strong signal HD radio is amazing and sounds instantly better than the standard broadcasts, although the HD can fade in and out a bit. I installed Pandora on my 4 year old 2.2 android and it's working great with the unit through BT. Routed the mic for the BT phone connection up to the map light and it works great. I think that I'd like to try spotify- anyone try running that on this head unit? The buttons on the unit are very small, but can be memorized.

Pros: Install. Sound. Connectivity. Reasonable price for the features.

Cons: The display is totally way too dim to see well in the daytime. Clock display also must be only about 10 point type. Small buttons. To earn 5 stars for Coolness, the stereo would have to follow voice commands.

The install into my '99 Camry LE was a breeze and the instructions were spot on. The only thing I don't get is why the wiring harness plugging into the stereo had to have its wires stripped and yet the wiring harness for the vehicle side was pre-stripped. This was a nuisance for install but other than that, install went great. The sound quality is great!! Connection to my Galaxy S5 running KitKat was easy and works better than a Pioneer I have in another vehicle. My only complaint is the lack of display brightness. During the day, the Camry's dash is mostly exposed to near direct sun and no matter what color you set it, the max brightness and color combination is still very hard to see. At night, the brightness is absolutely spot on and for a darker cabin, the level is probably acceptable.

Pros: Sound quality, easy of use, solid product

    Cons: Display Brightness (too dim)

I've been a Kenwood customer for close to 20 years and this unit doesn't disappoint. It has the sound quality that I expect and the features I want. I love the Bluetooth capabilities with this receiver. It's so convenient to play music directly from my phone. Works flawlessly with my iPhone 5. I bought this particular unit because of the Bluetooth and HD Radio functions. The unit does have specific inputs for iHeartRadio and Pandora but they can also played through the Bluetooth. You can also charge your phone with the USB on the front panel. Also being able to make bluetooth calls through the car speakers and the included microphone are pretty convenient. The only thing that this unit is lacking is a clean display. It looks a little cheap for what I was expecting. But the features outweigh any small let down I had with the display. All and all I'm pretty pumped about this receiver.

Pros: Bluetooth HD Radio Hands Free Calling Price vs. Value

Cons: Expected a little more out of the display

The unit is fantastic... But first of all, let me say that Crutchfield made it easy and made sure I had all the right tools, kit and harnesses to complete the installation. This Kenwood unit makes my stock speakers sound so much more robust than my OEM radio did. I can't imagine how much better it would sound with some new speakers. Soon maybe... Bluetooth paired quickly to my iphone and my wife's android. Phone mic for phone calls is decent, but not perfect. I have it placed down on the steering column. Most people on the other end of the phone call say I sound kind of far away, but talking is clear. Love the lighting customization on the unit. I matched it exactly to my car's instrument lighting. Only down side I can see is that is cycles slowly between inputs. Bluetooth-HDRadio-CD-Aux-Pandora. I wish it had a different way to select the input.

Pros: Easy to install. Great sound. Bluetooth is easy to use

Cons: Cycling between inputs is slow

This is the fourth Excelon head unit I've bought over the years, and the quality is top notch as always. Great feature set, and really like the dust covers over CD slot and Aux/USB ports. Bought this unit and the Metra mount kit to install under my factory radio, and the install was easy with the included harness and instructions from Crutchfield. Sound quality on HD radio stations is amazing compared to standard broadcasts.

Pros: HD Radio, Bluetooth, Pre-amp outputs, Aux/USB location, Wide range of settings

Cons: Display can be hard to see in indirect, full sunlight. This seems to be caused by the mounting angle in the Metra kit, so I can't really take points off the head unit.

I bought this unit as a replacement for the factory radio in Nissan Titan. This is a fantastic receiver. My major needs for this unit were Bluetooth, iPod controls, and SiriusXM compatibility. Now, I can easily jump between sources without having to unplug anything. The sound quality of this unit is fantastic. There are many settings that allow you to customize several aspects of the sound produced. Installation was pretty simple, and the direction for use are straight forward and easy to understand. One thing to note is that nowhere in the description was a remote for this unit ever mentioned, so I figured that it didn't come with one. Surprise, because the remote is the first thing I saw when I opened the box. Now I can get in my truck, crank it up, and listen to Bluetooth streaming from my iPhone or take a call without ever having to take my phone off of my belt. I'm very pleased.

Pros: Streaming Bluetooth, Hands free calling, 4v preamp outs, 5 band EQ, and the sound quality

    Audio Section

Excelon Series: The KDC-X799 CD receiver is part of Kenwood's Excelon series line-up. It incorporates the latest technologies and delivers the highest sonic performance. From advanced audio tuning capabilities, crossover and equalizer system, high-voltage preouts (4V), plus a two-year warranty - Kenwood Excelon represents exceptional audio quality with long-lasting dependability.

16 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X799 utilizes a 16-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X799 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KDC-X799 are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

6ch/4V Preamp Outputs + Sub Control: The KDC-X799 features front, rear and subwoofer 4-volt preamp outputs. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X799 offers the following subwoofer controls, when you are using unit's subwoofer preamp output.

    • Low Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the preamp-output, when the output is set to Subwoofer. You can select from 85 Hz, 120 Hz, 160 Hz, or off.
    • Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
    • Subwoofer Level: Once the Subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level (-15 to +15) from the CD receiver.

Front & Rear High-Pass Filter: The KDC-X799 features a High-Pass Crossover for the front & rear channels when your front & rear speakers are connected by the unit's speaker-outputs or preamp-outputs. You can adjust the high-pass crossover from "Through", 100, 120, or 150 Hz. The "Through" selection is a full-range setting.

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the head unit's audio settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of 'SP-Off' (flat/off), 'SP-OEM' (for OEM factory speaker systems), 'SP-6x9/6' (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or 'SP-5/4' (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

Equalizer: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X799 incorporates a built-in Equalizer with 8 EQ presets, a customizable 5-Band EQ, a anti-road noise Drive EQ, and a sound positioning "Extra EQ".

    • Sound Presets: The in-dash CD receiver offers 8 preset sound modes (Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, or User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. You can adjust the effect level (1/2/3) of each preset mode.
    • 5-Band EQ: The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 5-band EQ (80, 200, 800, 4k, 12.5k Hz) from -8 to +8.
    • Drive EQ: Road noise is the enemy of all audio systems found in vehicles. The inherent frequencies of road noise masks a wide range of the audio signal found in music, and this is the reason Kenwood engineers developed Drive EQ. Drive EQ boosts specific frequencies in the audio signal to compensate the negative impact of road noise.
    • Extra EQ: "Extra EQ" is function which virtually raises the sound position of your speakers, so they sound more like they are at ear level. It works by boosting frequencies around 4kHz. It can be set to one of four levels - Off, 1, 2, or 3.
Note: You can store EQ settings for each source (Disc, Tuner, USB, iPod, Android, Bluetooth, and Pandora/iHeart).

Sound Enhancements: The head unit provides further sound enhancements for your car audio system.

    • Bass Boost: The Kenwood CD receiver features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels (1-3 or off).
    • Loudness: This function enhances low and high frequencies to make the sound clearer lower volumes. There are 3 levels (1-2 or Off).
    • Sound Reconstruction: When MP3 or WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Sound Reconstruction function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When Sound Reconstruction is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.
    • Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

Detachable Face w/ Hidden CD Slot: The Kenwood KDC-X799 features a hidden CD slot behind a manual flip-up cover which blends into the front-panel of the head unit. The KDC-X799 also features a detachable face to deter theft (no face case provided). An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Variable Color Illumination: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X799 features variable color display and button illumination. You can choose from one of 24 preset colors, have the unit scan through all 24 preset colors continuously, or customize your own color (RGB; 0-9). The custom setting allows you to individually adjust the intensity of Red, Green, and Blue (from 0-9) to better match your vehicle's interior lights. The same color setting is applied to both the display and buttons. The Kenwood logo and eject button remain red.

Text Scroll: The KDC-X799 will display song/artist information text from CD, USB, iPod, and Android. You can set the text scrolling feature to three different modes (Auto, Once, or Off) to scroll longer titles across the screen.

Brightness & Dimmer: You can adjust the brightness of the LCD from 0-31. You can also dim (on or off) the display. These setting only affect the LCD and do not affect the button illumination.

12Hr/24Hr Clock: The head unit can be set to display a 12hr or 24hr clock. The unit also displays the day (Sun, Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, or Sat). The clock is only displayed when selected and does not display simultaneously with song/artist or station information. The day & time can be selected to remain on, even if the head unit is switched off (as long as the vehicle's key is in the accessory or start position).

Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned On or Off within the menu.

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The KDC-X799 comes with an IR remote control (RC-406) for wireless operation of the head unit. The remote will control Audio, CD, USB/iPod, and Tuner functions. It is powered by a single CR2025 3V lithium-cell battery (supplied).

    • Numeric Keypad: The wireless remote control features a numeric keypad (0-9) which allows direct track access of your music tracks & files (from CD or USB), as well as AM/FM presets.
    • Attenuator: The CD receiver features an Attenuator button on the supplied remote control that turns the volume down very quickly with one touch of the button.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow) within the included wiring harness that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

I selected this for the combination of HD radio, Bluetooth streaming, and a remote control. I also upgraded from lower models due to the 5 band equalizer. [ JOHN  Feb 25, 2016 ]

My brother just recently bought a double din Excelon and really likes it. His experience backs up the claim from my sales adviser that Kenwood's proprietary blue tooth tech is top notch. Also, it has radio preset buttons (some units dont anymore), it has HD radio, and its not gaudy looking like some other units. [ Matthew  Feb 05, 2016 ]

Regarding the left side of the faceplate on the KDC-X799: Does the plastic that surrounds the "telephone" button have a shiny chrome-like finish? It's hard to tell from the online pics. I'm hoping it's not because I'm looking for more of a black finish to match an older car. Thanks, Paul

Yes just around the phone button is chrome. Still an amazing stereo !

I went out to my truck and looked at the headunit. It is definitely a chrome-y finish, but not bright. It is not the black like the rest of the unit. It actually looks like the picture, a dull, dark chrome, but definitely chrome. Hope this helps.
    [ BILL  Feb 16, 2016 ]
    A
Yes it has a chrome like finish on the top side of the phone button. I must say that even though you may be going for the black finish, this accent piece is very attractive on the face. Overall this has been a solid performer for my system.

    Q
After wiring this unit to my power antenna, will it only raise the antenna when the radio function is on or the whole time the unit is on regardless of which mode it's in?

    A
THe power antenna will raise the whole time the unit is on regardless of which mode it's in. There is no seperate power on wire just for the radio function.

I often change EQ and fade/balance settings depending on what I am listening to. Are these controls immediately available, or is it necessary to navigate multiple menu levels?

Adam P: The Kenwood, like all modern sterios it seems, is menu driven. That said, I have been able to get to the EQ menu pretty quickly. I miss the old days when you had sliders for EQ adjustment.

    A
It's fairly easy. Push volume knob once to enter menu , then push one more time to enter audio and turn knob to the feature you want to adjust Eq , balance, fade etc.. Excellent radio ! I'm very happy with mine.

    Q
when i turn the subwoofer output on does the receiver cut the low frequencies to the internal amp?
    [ david  Jul 16, 2015 ]
    3 answers
    A
This receiver, as with I believe all Excelon receivers are unique in that they have on board crossovers, both for filtering high frequencies and low frequencies. I believe that for this unit this also holds true for both line level and speaker level outputs. And most modern amplifiers also have high pass or low pass filters built in. On either the HU or the amp you have several options (this is for certain with this HU) that will allow you to send only low frequencies to your sub or chose to send a full signal to your sub then filter that information with the low pass filter on the sub. This head unit is excellent for tuning your sub almost anyway you like.

I am not sure because I didn't hook up a subwoofer to my radio. Sorry I couldn't help you on that question
    [ Tony  Jul 20, 2015 ]

I don't have m y stereo setup this way, but if you connect the sub out to your amp it should cut the highs out with an adjustable lows. hope this helps

Does the KDC-X799 have an auto dim feature for when you turn your lights on? I just received mine in the mail and was wiring it up and I didn't know if that was possible. I have looked online and found that previous Kenwood receivers had this feature. Thank you for any input.

    Q
Will this work with the kenwood 10 disc changer ( i know old school )!?
    [ Mikey  Apr 15, 2015 ]
    5 answers
    A
I'm going to stick my neck out here and say yes. On my current Excelon I have both a KDC-C719 10 disc changer and a KCA-SR50 Sirius sharing my head unit's Sat Radio port via a Kenwood KCA-S220A switching unit. When I bought this switching unit, it was meant to string a second disc changer into my HU back when there was no Sirius Radio. Fortunately, the switch, changer and Sat radio ports are identical and I simply see Sirius the CD Changer on the stereo face as I scroll through the menus. BUT.... if you are trying to save the 10 disc for its greater fidelity; don't. I was desperate to save my disc changer too. After all, why invest a couple grand in an awesome stereo only to play inferior MP3 or WMA files if you still have CDs. Instead, invest in a USB 2.0 flash drive and rip .WAV files to it from your computer. For PC guys, simply change the rip settings in Media Player to rip WAV to your thumb drive rather than MP3 or WMA files. With processing power and speed of modern high end audio equipment and the dirt cheap prices of large volume mass storage devices, we don't have to be stuck with heavily munch MP3 files anymore. Now the menu system for finding specific songs will be almost as clunky as looking for files on CDs but files on a thumb drive switch much faster that switching CDs in a changer and you can put thousands of un-compressed songs on one thumb drive now. There may be a better interface by using your phone. I have a 128GB S6 that will Bluetooth aptX codec. I'm hoping this and WAV files will play my entire CD collection like I currently switch radio stations and that's why I'm here buy this stereo today. Thank you all for stopping by. LOL.

Mike - I've never personally used a changer, but I'm pretty sure the answer to your question is no. I'm assuming there would have to be some sort of multi-pin connector between changer and head unit. The kenwood head unit only has the multi-pin connector for Sirius/xm, and the rca pre-outs. Don
    [ Donald  Apr 18, 2015 ]
    A
Mike unfortunately not, I have a 10 disc changer from my last Kenwood radio, the KDC-X799 uses the plug for connecting satellite radio in place of a CD changer. As a suggestion you can copy your disc to a USB jump drive and play your music from there. The nice thing is you are not limited to 10 discs of music you can load as many discs on the jump drive as it can handle.
    [ Frederick  Apr 16, 2015 ]
    A
I'm going to take a guess and say no. The crutchfield guys should be able to answer for sure. CD controllers are a thing of the past I'm betting. You might be able to pick something up on EBAY that will control you changer.
    [ William  Apr 16, 2015 ]
    A
The receiver does not support a CD Changer. I would recommend storing the 10 CD's on a USB drive...less wires to run and more convenient. USB can be plugged in at the front port easily.

THe color adjustment on the kdc x799 is very easy. It does adjust the the entire front panel at the twist of a button. There are lots of shades and colors to choose from.
    [ Tony  Mar 27, 2015 ]

Yes it was very easy...just go to display then color and find the manual color entry It will have R> G> B> balance (red, green, blue--use the seek buttons to go to each color and volume to adjust color) then adjust it to whatever color you like. When you figure your color and you go to back out of of the color option it will seem like your selection did save because the radio goes to its default color but when you get to your source options it will be set to your color. And yes everything that is illuminated the color will change. Hope this was helpful.

It is very easy to change the color of the lights , but it does change all the lights the same color. I have no complaints for this stereo. Like the HD radio and the USB .
    [ MIKE  Mar 27, 2015 ]
    A
Yes, the color is easy to change from the menus and does effect the entire display. This was a gift to my sister and I installed it for her. We easily set the color she liked. Page 20 in the manual gives the actual steps and the PDF can be downloaded from Kenwood's web site if you would like to get the actual steps. Unit has ability to set custom colors but have not experimented with that as of yet. Sister is very pleased with this unit, good sound quality and is in our opinion a great unit for the $$$. Best Wishes!
