Our take on the Kenwood KMR-350U

Built for life on the water
Kenwood built the KMR-350U marine receiver to stand up to the tough environment you encounter on a boat, with a conformal-coated circuit board that helps prevents moisture from sending your receiver to an early grave. But it's also built to handle all the latest media options so you can relax and enjoy your time on the water. And, if you're installing the KMR-350U in an out-of-the-way spot, a Kenwood wired marine remote (not included) allows you to control it from the helm.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

To be honest I bought this receiver cause it was the least expensive top brand one that had iPod/iPhone connection. This receiver is up there with the higher priced option, sounds great, install was easy and looks awesome. Love the Pandora control.

Pros: Ease of use, lots of options for music enjoyment. Pandora function is great.

Cons: Would like a sub preout but knew tht when purchasing.

    easy install - sounded great

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Unit was shipped extremely fast, has exactly what I was looking for and although only fully tested in the driveway it operates exactly as expected. So good so far!

    Pros: Everything I paid for.

Cons: Display seems unadapted to direct sunlight.

    Good Upgrade

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit to replace another Kenwood receiver that had quit working. The reason the old one died is that it rained and the top was down. Fearing the same fate to a new unit, I went with a marine radio. Hopefully it will not get rained on, but if it does, I should be good. As it was replacing another Kenwood unit (also bought from Crutchfield) the installation was simple plug and play. It works fine and I have almost no complaints except for the size of the buttons. It is very tough to switch between presets and the display button can not be operated at all while wearing gloves. The volume control is large and easy to adjust, and since I do not switch presets often I am able to live with it - but I miss the large buttons for the radios from the 1980's!

    Pros: Water resistant, easy install

    Cons: Tiny preset buttons

    Glorified Automobile Stero

    E. Marks from Miami, Florida on 10/8/2012

This stereo is nothing more than an auto head unit renamed by Kenwood to include the word "marine". I installed the unit less than two months ago in my boar and used it on two local trips in Miami and one trip to Key West. In Key West, my wife and I ran through a small rain shower. It appeared that a little rain water got through a mounting screw hole on the top of a fully enclosed center console and dripped onto the stereo. The CPU shorted which was not covered under Kenwood's warranty (Water damage to a marine stereo) after only two months. Most marine stereos are sealed and have gold plated terminals to resist the harsh marine environments. This Kenwood "marine" stereo is nothing more than a basic car stereo with an added word on the box. If you are doing more than just cruising the lake, buy a true marine stereo.

    Pros: I Pod/Phone compatible

Cons: Not a true "marine" stereo

Pros: Plenty of power. Good quality.

    Cons: None

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i purchased a "scratch and dent" clearance item. Box looked as if it had been previously opened, but otherwise, the unit appeared perfect. This head unit was installed in my pontoon and so far I couldn't be happier. I have another Kenwood marine unit in my runabout and an non marine unit in my Jeep Wrangler. All work fine, operate my ipod/iphone as they should and sound great for the price(s) paid. I use with Polk Audio speakers without additional amplifiers. I used to use Sony, but have had bad luck with a couple units in the last few years. I'm almost all Kenwood now.

    Pros: Great value.

    Guest from MS on 7/20/2012

Installed the radio and all was good on first trip on the water. Second trip USB port would not recognize any thumb drive. Third trip volume knob stop working. Sending back to kenwood for replacement. Hopefully just a lemon!

    Great radio

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got the radio in a manner of a couple days and finnally installed it in my boat. I was able to pick up radio stations inside the boathouse without the attena installed. The CD played all my CD-R with no troubles. So far it's a 5 star.

    Pros: Many, reception cd, etc.

    Cons: none so far

    DaveP from Knoxville,TN on 7/8/2012

Bought this for a Pool setup and this unit sounds great with my rock speakers. Enclosure i had failed int he first storm and this unit got soaked but after dying it out still works great. Not really understanding why this doesn't have a wireless remote available.

Pros: Great sound. Easy setup and pretty tough.

Cons: No wireless remote available for the unit.

    Works great

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to install, awesome features, and great sound. The Pandora feature is cool, and the integrated iPod player also works great. I've got it hooked up to some older speakers and it still sounds crisp and clean.

    Pros: Install, iPod hookup

Cons: The install brace needs some luvin

    So Far, So Good

Neat from Springboro, oh on 6/8/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Install was easy. The product has every feature we were looking for. We've only used it once on the boat but the sound quality was great and it played our XM radio with ease. This is the 3nd Kenwood head unit I've purchased for vehicles and they have all lived up to my expectations. 4 stars only because of the short time we've had it . By the end of the boating season it will probably be 5.

Pros: Aux and USB ports. Built in equalizer. Fade option.

    Cons: None as of yet.

    Nice Radio

    Pros: none so far

    Cons: Wired remote still unavailiable

    Great value

BB from Forest Lake, MN on 3/30/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just got this yesterday, mounted today. Sounds great. I bought a marine stereo locally at one fo the sporting goods stores that came with speakers. Buttons broke first time using it and it didn't have Ipod controls. This one sounds better and has a lot more features for less price.

    Pros: Great sound, Ipod controls.

Cons: Didn't come with back bracket to hang back end of radio, it does have a threaded hole to use on the heat sync but you need to provide the metric bolt.

    Looks good

Riick from Orlando, FL on 1/3/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This fit the bill perfectly. FRONT USB, aux in, ipod/iphone control, nice modern styling. Nobody else offers those features in a marine radio. They all put the USB in the rear so you can never use it. Useless. That's why I purchased this radio so I can swap the thumb drive from home/car/to now boat. Sound quality? OMG. This thing is hooked up to two Polk DB651 and it shakes the boat and will make your ears ring. Perfectly clear zero distortion at my sound level: The louder you turn the knob the better it sounds. I'm adding two more DB's just to make sure the people living on the lake can hear my music inside their houses, It's ridiculous honestly. My boat with just 2 speakers sounds better then my Lexus.

Pros: Sounds better and faster USB then my Sony CDX-GT700HD. The wired remotes are pretty and glow.

Cons: It's so new it's not even on the kenwood website and I'm be the first review anywhere. At least I have one they're sold out everywhere :)

Marine Receiver: At the factory, the Kenwood KMR-350U Marine receiver has a special water-resistant conformal coating placed on its main circuit board. This protects the circuitry from the harsh, corrosive marine environment.

Water Resistant Covers (optional): Even though the conformal coating makes the receiver water-resistant, it is still recommended that it be used with a universal marine cover such as the Metra (120999005B, sold separately) or Scosche (142ACM1, sold separately).

    Disc Playback

Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio, CD-Text, and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs.

MP3/WMA Playback: The KMR-350U can play MP3 (8-320 kbps) and WMA (32-192 kbps) files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, Romeo, and Long file name formats. Each disc can have a maximum of 8 directory levels, 50 folders, and 255 files per folder (512 maximum number of files and folders). During MP3/WMA playback, the unit displays any recorded ID3 Tag (ver. 1.x/2.x) and WMA Tag information - up to 60 characters.

Text Scroll: The KMR-350U will display CD text or Audio file text. You can set the text scrolling feature to three different modes (Auto, Once, or Off) to scroll longer titles across the screen.

Music Search: The Kenwood Marine AM/FM CD receiver features a Music Search feature which allows you to scroll through and select your MP3/WMA music folders and files, as well as scroll through your audio CD's music tracks using the head unit's rotary knob.

Playback Modes: The Kenwood KMR-350U features the following Repeat, Random, and Scan playback modes.

    • Repeat Play: Track, File, or Folder
    • Random Play: Disc or Folder
    • Scan Play: Track or File (plays the first 10-seconds of each music track on a disc or music file in a folder)

Last Position Memory: If the unit is shut off or switched to the tuner mode while a CD is playing, the next time CD is selected as the source, playback will resume from the point where it left off.

CD Read: This function sets the method for reading a CD disc. You can choose between two modes.

    • CD1: Automatically distinguishes between audio file disc and music CD when playing a CD or CD-R/RW disc.
    • CD2: When unable to play a special formatted CD, set this function to CD2 to force playing. Some music CD  discs may be unplayable even when set to this mode.

Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.

Auto Reload: If the ejected disc is not removed within 15 seconds, the disc is automatically inserted again into the loading slot to protect it from dust.

    USB/iPod/Aux Connectivity

USB Port: The Kenwood KMR-350U features a front panel USB (type-A) port that is hidden behind a flip-up cover. The USB port enables connection and control of a portable USB mass-storage class (MSC) device with MP3 (8-320 kbps) and WMA (32-192 kbps) music files. The USB port is compatible with USB mass storage class devices that support the FAT16 or FAT32 file system. Your USB device should only have a maximum of 8 folder layers, 255 folders, and 255 files per folder - with a maximum of 65,025 files and folders. USB portable audio players that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the CD receiver's USB port, and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On.

Note: You cannot connect a USB device via a USB hub or Multi-Card Reader to this unit.

Music Editor Compatible: The Kenwood KMR-350U supports the PC application, Kenwood Music Editor Lite (ver.1.1.0). If you have an iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), or iPhone 5; use the Lighting-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect to the head unit. Using either cable allows audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of select iPod/iPhone models from the KMR-350U.

The Kenwood head unit supports audio playback of music files and podcasts stored on your iPod or iPhone, as well as music apps streamed to your iPhone.

You will continue to use your iPhone's touchscreen to navigate your apps. Not all apps will be compatible with App Mode.

Note: Access to your iPhone's downloaded applications will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

Pandora App: The Pandora App (free) lets you play music from the Pandora music service through the Kenwood KMR-350U using your connected Apple iPhone, via the Kenwood KCA-iP102 USB/iPod connector cable (sold separately), or the USB/Dock cable supplied with your iPhone. Music Control for Android Smartphone: The Kenwood Music Control app for Android organizes your Android smartphone's music, while providing quick and easy search capability from the Kenwood Marine CD receiver. The free Kenwood Music Control App for Android can be downloaded onto your Android smartphone from the Android Market place. Your Android smartphone must be running Android OS 2.2 or later. Once the app is downloaded and has a chance to organize all the stored music on your Android smartphone, you can connect your Android smartphone to the Kenwood CD receiver via USB (your compatible Android smartphone will be recognized as a USB mass storage class device). The Kenwood Music Control app offers the following Android supported functions.

    • Song Management: Music stored in your Android smartphone can be navigated from the Kenwood Marine CD receiver. Songs can be easily selected by searching for a Song title, Artist name, Album label, or Genre.
    • Song Information Display: Song information such as Artist name, Song title, and Album label are displayed on the connected Kenwood Marine CD receiver.
    • Mood Playlist: Playlists can be created by classifying songs into categories by type of mood. Songs are analyzed and classified into the following categories of moods - High Energy (Active/Powerful/Core), Acoustic (Detailed/Simple/Smooth/Easy), Standard (Dynamic/Rockin/Vivid), Stylistic (Cool/Urban/Trance)
    • Intro Skip: This function allows you to choose and listen to only the hook-lines of songs stored in your Android smartphone.

Note: When the Kenwood Music Control app is first downloaded it will require some time to populate all the music, so we suggest doing this overnight.

Music Files Format Supported by Music Control app for Android:

Codec Extension Bit Rate Sampling Frequency
AAC .aac, m4a up to 160 kbps 8-48 kHz
    MP3 .mp3 8-320 kbps n/a
    PCM/WAV .wav n/a n/a

Aux In: The Marine head unit is equipped with a front panel 3.5mm minijack auxiliary input that can be used to input audio from a portable audio source, such as a portable MP3 player. The Aux input must be turned on to function. The unit has 3 auxiliary input modes.

    • On1: Outputs the sound of the external unit connected to the Aux terminal when switched to the Aux source.
    • On2: Activates the attenuator function when turning on the power with the auxiliary source selected. This prevents the noise when no external unit is connected to the Aux terminal. Turn off the attenuator function when listening to output from an external unit.
    • Off: Disables the selection of the Aux source.

Auxiliary Display: The KMR-350U allows you to select the source type displayed when using the auxiliary input. You can choose from AUX, DVD, Portable, Game, Video, or TV.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood KMR-350U utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood KMR-350U is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KMR-350U are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

3-Way Rotary Volume Control: The CD receiver uses a 3-way rotary volume control that increases and decreases the volume of the stereo from 0 to 35. The rotary knob also controls other audio settings such as Balance, Fader, Bass, Mid, Treble and preset EQ settings. In addition, the rotary knob allows you to scroll through and select your music tracks when the Music Search function is activated.

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of 'SP-Off' (flat/off), 'SP-OEM' (for OEM factory speaker systems), 'SP-6x9/6' (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or 'SP-5/4' (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

Preset EQ: Eight EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (12.5kHz).
