With built-in Bluetooth®, you'll have a robust streaming experience courtesy of next-level Spotify® and Pandora® compatibility. Kenwood even gives you two prominent, direct access Bluetooth buttons for music and calling. Two-phone pairing makes connecting for hands-free calling a breeze if you share your vehicle with another driver.

Two USB inputs

Thanks to front-facing and rear USB inputs, you can connect two devices to the KMM-X503 for charging at once. Or use one USB input for connecting your smartphone for streaming Spotify or Pandora on the fly and the other to turn your old MP3 player or thumb drive into a permanent audio source. While the KMM-X503 doesn't play CDs, options abound.

Options for Apple® and Android™

Got an iPod® or iPhone®? You can plug your player in via USB to access your playlists. Dedicated "search" and "return" buttons, plus handy tools like AppMode, Alphabet, Percentage Skip, and Related Search help you find your music fast.

You'll be able to run the apps you like and take advantage of a variety of search and playback features.

Turn your phone into a remote

The KMM-BT525HD can play MP3, AAC, WAV, and FLAC music files, so you'll be able to enjoy your entire music library. And if you want to hand over control of the stereo to the gang in the backseat, the Kenwood Remote App lets you turn your smartphone into a wireless remote.

Compatible with SiriusXM

Add a satellite radio tuner (subscription also required) to enjoy SiriusXM's remarkably varied range of music, entertainment, news, and sports programming. If you're planning to build a really rockin' system, this high-performance receiver offers three sets of preamp outputs, so you'll be in good shape when you add amplifiers and subwoofers.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Great Tuner - Poor Clock Display

Crutchfield customer from Benbrook, TX on 9/9/2019

    Verified customer (What's this?)
    Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This head unit has plenty of power, excellent tuner and outstanding equalizer features. Sadly, the clock display is miniature and useless. I really don't understand the display options offered by Kenwood at all. It clearly shows the date and even the day of the week in large letters. Who needs that on their radio? I'd be delighted if the date were small and the clock was large. If this radio didn't sound so good, I would send it back.

Pros: Great power and control over the sound. Best tuner I have found.

    Cons: Useless clock display

Purchased to replace the factory receiver in daughters car. When she first heard it, she got the biggest grin and said " It sounds like I m in a movie theater." Tons of sound customization options beyond just eq. Love the power from 22 watts rms. Have not been a kenwood patron in the past. But this little gem has made me a believer

Pros: Power, sound quality, sound customization options, speaker size selection options, crossover feature, subwoofer control, siri voice feature

Cons: None on the receiver. Finding an affordable, single DIN mounting option to replace the factory radio took a lot of work. I used metra 99-7864 and used parts from the kit crutchfield included and install went smoothly.

    Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

The new Kenwood radio was exactly what I wanted. I replaced an older Kenwood radio that had been installed in my 2000 Porsche 911 by a previous owner. Installation was a problem. Although I told Crutchfield multiple times that I was replacing a Kenwood radio, they kept sending me instructions and conversion wiring parts to replace the OEM Porsche radio. On my own, I went through the tedious job of disconnecting the old radio wire-by-wire and connecting the new radio wire-by-wire. Took some guesswork about a couple wires, but I got lucky.

Pros: The Kenwood Excelon KMM-X503 is an excellent radio.

Cons: If I had known the difficulty I faced before pulling out the old Kenwood radio, I probably would have purchased it from a local shop and had them install it.

I've been a car audiophile for 30 years. Competition for some sound quality. 4 Infiniti kappa Perfect 12 single 4 ohm on a us amp 100hc bridged down to 1/2 ohm. Us amp 3 way crossover. Mb quartz 6 1/2 in the doors. Mb quartz 4 inch in the dash. 1 inch alpha audio tweeters in the dash running off a 4 channel alpine. All from 1999. Yes I still have the same setup for going on 20 years. Installed in a 2000 Chevy s10 xtreme, extended cab. I've had kenwood receivers come and go. Had to replace one today. I ordered the kmm-x503, installed it today. So far I'm happy with it. All my CDs are ripped to digital now. Didn't need the CD player. Quinn helped me in decision. Need more play time with it. Went for a quick spin around the block for a little tuning session after the install. I'll see about uploading some photos soon.

Pros: Easy to install. Easy function. Half as deep as a CD receiver.

Cons: No remote or attenuation button. Very basic with today's technology, but does the job.

This review is specifically for the Mercedes W123 owners out there that find this. This install was in a 1985 300TD. I could not be more pleased with the ease of install and the value and performance of this unit. I also purchased the factory wiring kit as well. The instructions and wiring kit are excellent. I was able to install the radio without cutting into the factory wiring in any way. The instructions provided details each step perfectly. The antenna and console speaker fader work like factory. I am extremely pleased with Cruchfields product selection and service.

My son had another Kenwood installed in the car he was using for college. He's taking another car down to college and he wanted a similar radio. Installation was easy as the instructions from Crutchfield was spot on as usual. The wiring harness and dash kit fit perfectly and everything installed perfectly. I purchase from Crutchfield not only for their competitive pricing, but also for the wiring kit and dash kit that comes along with the purchase.

Pros: Easy shopping and purchase. Everything is on the ordering page or has a link and I don't have to search for everything (wiring kit, dash kit...etc)

Cons: I haven't experienced any. I've had two different purchases with Crutchfield and they've always been as expected and arrived within a day or two from placing the order.

Incredible value for money. Advanced audio control capabilities, high voltage output, fantastic sound! The one minor drawback with this unit is the lack of a dot matrix display, but it's unbeatable for the price.

Pros: High voltage preouts Advanced audio settings, crossovers/slopes/controls Front plus rear USB Small chassis High quality and responsive buttons VIbrant and colourful display Incredible sound, right out of the box

Cons: Interface is not very intuitive, compared with my previous alpine - but I'll get accustomed to it. A dot matrix display will certainly make this unit impossible to beat. Not enough screen real estate for track information

Perfect HU for my motorcycle! I previous had an older Kenwood installed, but was getting tired of having to have my phone plugged in for sound, and didn't have any need for a CD player opening, as the fairing bounces too much to allow for CDs to play. I picked this up and paired it with some upgraded speakers and I can't be happier! I've had no issues with my Android phone connecting by Bluetooth when the bike starts up, and I love being able to change the song on the fly without having to mess with a phone!

High voltage pre-amp outputs for front, rear & subs 5. Bluetooth audio streaming + Spotify control 6. Sleek looking unit 7. Easy install since it's short & lightweight (no CD player) Crutchfield's "ReadyHarness" system makes installs FAR TOO EASY these days... This unit's install was quite literally plug & play. Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

My primary desire was to have bluetooth phone calling in my 2005 Jeep liberty. On that front this is a 100% winner. The call quality is almost perfect. The remote mic does a great job canceling out road noise and gives a very high quality phone experience. The audio quality of the music features is very good and the spotify connection works well with the bluetooth on my phone. Why 4 stars instead of 5. There is one important design issue that really hurts the unit. If you look at the picture of the display you will see that there is a very large display area for the station and other info and a very small display area for the TIME. When you set the unit to display date it displays the current date in the large display. That is kind of useless, when driving I rarely wonder what day it is but I often check the time. The large display should show time when asked in addition to the date info. If they fixed that this would be a perfect unit

Pros: Great Audio quality for phone calls Great audio quality for music

Cons: Time display needs to be in both the small dedicated display and the larger date area when switched to that mode

Nice little unit, installed easily with no problems. Does what is supposed to do and sounds good. Pairs perfectly with a Pixel 2XL. Menu and interface is a little clunky to use.

    Pros: Great for the price.

Cons: Confusing menu & no XM channel name displayed, channel number only.

Very happy with this head unit. Sync's seamlessly with Spotify. I'm a tweaker so this unit has great tonal control. Who needs a CD player these days anyway. Even though the manual says it doesn't support Full Size iPod, the unit still works with my iPod Classic. That was a big plus for me. I've have Kenwoods in a few other cars of mine and happy with the quality and craftsmanship of all their products.

I'm doing a restoration/modification to a 1988 4Runner. The head unit options are limited because of the size of the opening and it's in front of the gear shift for a manual...having a small, easy to use head unit was a must. This is easy to set up and easily connected to my phone. The Kenwood app is adequate with it's best feature being able to tune the receiver from the phone app (really helpful with the custom EQ settings).

Pros: Small, affordable, easy to install, works great with an iPhone

After installing this radio I looked through the installation guide to find out how to program it, there is virtually nothing that tells you how to program this radio. I had to look online to find what I was looking for and there was nothing. Finally, I called tech support at Crutchfield, without them I don't know what I would have done, maybe I could have gotten a 4-year-old in the Jeep to program it for me! Once the radio was programmed I have to say I love it. I would have given it 5 stars if there were programming instructions included by Kenwood or at the least a website or youtube channel you could have gone to. So overall I give Crutchfield 5 Stars, the radio 5 stars, Kenwood 4 stars.

Pros: Great options in every area of the radio

Cons: No programming instructions included in the box Weak radio signal reception

Easy install. Sound s good, although a little tinny with the Corvette Bose system (probably an adjustment for the interface). Will not pick up any AM stations. User interface is a little aggravating. Going between sources requires repeatedly pressing the same button-would be better with dedicated input buttons. Blue tooth works great for streaming and phone. All in all, satisfied for the price.

Over all this is a great system and sounds good. It was easy to install and works with the steering wheel controls (with an adapter). Having rear and front access USB is great since it can be hooked to a media drive or as I did routed it to a USB port so I have 2 accessible. Meets all my needs and at a really good price for the Excelon series. My only real complaint so far is that I cannot control/disable the Auto Play 'feature' when plug into the USB port. So my kids like to plug so their music plays and annoys me. I they enjoy plugging into the audio port because the autoplay annoys me. So I didn't a star for the lack of that that control. Also, there is a remote app you can get - don't waste your time with it - it has to be one of the worst Apps I have seen. I tried to used for a while and just got too frustrated with it and deleted it. Last Note: Installed in a 2008 Lexus GX 470 WITH Navigation. It can be done, you just need to get wiring harness.

Pros: It's a great price. Sounds great. Easy to Install. Many settings to control.

Cons: Autoplay when a phone is plugged into the USB port is really annoying. Not having a setting to disable it bothers me more. The remote app - you do need to get it for yourself just to see how awful it really is.

I just received this Kenwood Excelon KMM-X503, Kenwood Excelon KMM-X503, PAC ROEM-GM21 Wiring Interface, and Metra 40-GM10 Antenna Adapter a week ago and I had wire splicing done by a Crutchfield tech for an additional charge. Having the wire harness spliced into the wiring interface made this all plug and play from my end. Lee, the Crutchfield Adviser, helped me out a great deal with everything - even suggesting the exact right receiver/head unit - the Kenwood Excelon KMM-X503 to the suggestion of spending the $$ on the splicing. I didn't know what was good or not too good and Lee steered me in the exact right direction - the guy just knows what he's doing. I ordered on Monday and everything was delivered on Thursday. Installed it in a couple hours on Saturday. I was replacing a 2 din Bose head unit in my '94 Z28 with this 1 din unit. The adapter kit worked perfectly. Directions were easy to read and understand. I needed to get bluetooth - the bluetooth phone option works awesome - this specific unit blocks all back-round noise from my end so when on the phone the person can hear me clearly with no back-round noise. My Z28 is built and it's pretty loud - I can't even believe it works so well. Don't listen to these folks running the aftermarket retail shops who sell the aftermarket stereo receivers and make it sound like it's impossible to do on your own. They want to charge you top dollar for all the products and install labor - total load of BS. DIY -Ri

Pros: works great makes my 25 year old speakers sound much better than the original Bose head unit Bluetooth phone works great and blocks out all background car noise from my end - actually all bluetooth options work great along with the stereo itself Easy to install - the directions were perfect

    Cons: None -

Pretty cool unit. Install was super easy thanks to its lack of depth. And who needs CD's anymore! Integration with Siri works pretty decent although one time my iPhone Xr had a split personality moment and was talking in two different streams (on the phone and the receiver) but I have heard weird things like that from other units, so I'll chalk that up to an Apple iOS issue.

    Pros: Siri!!

1994 F150 Standard Cab Pickup (single DIN only). Kenwood KMM-X503, Kenwood Excelon X801-5 amp, Polk DB 6501 components (no rear speakers), Rockford Fosgate P3S-1X10. Upgraded to this from a Kenwood KMM-BT515HD head unit that was a couple of years old. Main concerns were getting a brighter display and making use of the time alignment features of the head unit. Both did not disappoint. Screen is much brighter than the previous unit, and the 5V preouts allowed me to adjust my amp gains down while increasing the sound quality. The time alignment, to put it simply, is a game changer. Being able to adjust the delay and volume of each individual speaker is something that we used to spend thousands of dollars on to get right. Now its built in to a $130 head unit. Well worth the upgrade just for that feature. Another feature this unit has which really helps those of us running passive components - tweeter shelf setting with gain adjustment. See all of those reviews from people complaining that the tweeters in their component set is too bright? This head unit allows you to set a shelf frequency and then adjust the gain down for everything above that frequency. Makes a huge difference and essentially corrects for most of the problems found with inadequate passive crossovers. All in all a great deal - Still can't believe it only costs $130.

Pros: Time alignment, sound quality, bright display

    Cons: doesn't make me coffee

So far, so good. Recently replace the head unit in my new-to-me 2004 BMW 330xi. The original Harman Kardon worked fine but lacked BT or other Aux inputs, so I decided to make the switch. This unit is compact so it fits nicely in the very tight space BMW allotted and sounds great. My car has the HK 10 speaker with amp setup and I wanted to leave the stock system as it sounds fine to my ears. My system has 10 speakers, amp, and Business CD head unit. So this Kenwood install was fairly easy with the recommended harnesses, but with limited space I did not want to cram the Line Output Converter Crutchfield recommended. I did some research and found the following solution that works great. I left the head unit's (Kenwood Excelon KMM-X503) negative speaker wires floating (not connected and tied back) while passing the positive to the OEM amp without using the converter. I tied all of negative speaker wires (heading to the OEM amp) to the common ground wire and the system sounds amazing. Can't take credit for this solution, found it on a BMW forum. Great choice of head unit with a bunch of options..

Pros: Great head unit for tight space in BMW 330

    Cons: none so far

Glad I did, brought my sounds to life. Loaded with features for tuning, ease of use, color options. I play music from my I Phone and it works great. 5 volt pre out for amp versus only a 4 on the 522 and 525 models. Crutchfield never disappoints. Huge improvement over the factory Rockford system, now I can keep my old go to work car around a little longer, just crank up the tunes and enjoy!

I like this receiver in most respects. Sound is good, looks good, and has many features. Installation was easy with Crutchfield's help. However, the buttons are small and the operation and access to the various features is not easy.

    Pros: HD Radio

    Cons: Small buttons

This unit is pretty much anything you need less video features. Easy to set up, easy to use. Plenty of expandability for future system building. All the features, and 2 years parts and labor warranty, hard to beat that confidence in a product.

Pros: Great sound, very customizable to suit your vehicles interior lighting.

    Cons: Nothing so far.

I've been using this head unit for about a week now, and I really like it. The Bluetooth connectivity is great and I'm told that it sounds great by everyone I've talked to on it. The customizable colors for the display is nice, as I was able to match the red color of the factory instruments in my 1999 Audi. The only complaint I have at this point is the way that you select an audio source. My old Excelon head unit brought up a series of icons for the different sources and you used the volume knob to scroll thru to the one you wanted. This unit forces you to choose them one at a time until you get to the one you want. Other than that, I'm extremely happy with it and would recommend it to anybody wanting to upgrade an older car to include Bluetooth for hands free calling.

Pros: A lot of features for the price Sounds great! Great Bluetooth connectivity and sound quality

Cons: Somewhat clunky method to select an audio source

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth 3.0: The Kenwood KMM-X503 is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (ver. 3.0) allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.6 (Hands Free Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.5 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Kenwood KMM-X503. Visit Kenwood's Support Site for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

SSP & USB Pairing: With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Kenwood KMM-X503 without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. You can even pair your Apple iPhone (iOS 5+) or Android smartphone (running Kenwood Music Play App) by simply connecting it to the Kenwood head unit via USB and following a single prompt on the head unit's display.

    • Dual Phone Connection: Thanks to the Dual Phone Connection feature, two Bluetooth-enabled phones can remain connected to the Kenwood receiver. This means you can an answer an incoming call from either phone from the head unit. Also, both of your phone's contact lists are downloaded to the receiver. To make a call from one of the phones using the Kenwood receiver, you simply have to select Phone 1 or Phone 2 on the head unit's front-panel.
    • Music Mix: The new Music Mix feature allows five Bluetooth audio source devices to be connected to the Kenwood receiver at one time, so you can switch between Bluetooth playback sources a lot easier and quicker. While "BT Audio" source is selected on the head unit, you can simply press the music playback button on your connected Bluetooth source devices to switch between devices and begin music playback. However, you cannot stream audio from two different Bluetooth audio source devices at the same time or combine music libraries or playlists from two different connected devices.
Note: You can pair up to five Bluetooth-enabled devices to the Kenwood head unit. When an already paired Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units.

Bluetooth Hands-Free Communication: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The controls of the KMM-X503 can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering a Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. You can answer the call from the head unit's front-panel controls, or setup the head unit to automatically answer the incoming call immediately or after 1-30 seconds. The KMM-X503 also supports the Call Waiting function, so you can answer another incoming call while suspending the current call you are on. Your compatible cell-phone must also support this feature.
    • Dialing a Number: Using the KMM-X503, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:
      • Enter Phone #: Allows you to directly dial a phone number up to 32 digits from the head unit's control knob or remote control.
      • Preset Dial: Allows you to register up to 6 phone numbers for quick dialing. The preset numbers can be accessed from the head unit's front-panel controls.
      • Phone Book: You can download phone book data from your mobile phone to the KMM-X503. You can then dial a contact within the phonebook from the head unit's front-panel controls. Contacts are categorized as Home, Office, Mobile, Other, or General.
      • Call History: The Call History is a list of calls that have originated from and were received by this unit that you can dial. You can select Outgoing, Incoming, or Missed calls.
      • Voice Dialing: If your mobile phone supports voice recognition, then you can dial out by voice command. Simply speak into the included microphone.
    • External Mic: The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the volume level, noise cancellation, and echo cancellation of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 10' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone offers an integrated mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash.

Wireless Audio Streaming: The Kenwood KMM-X503 supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone or audio player. You are able to stream your stored music library on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, as well as music apps downloaded on your smartphone to the Kenwood KMM-X503 for playback.

    • SBC + AAC Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the KMM-X503 offers support of AAC. By supporting AAC, the KMM-X503 offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
    • Advanced Music Browsing: In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat), the KMM-X503 lets you browse your stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, etc. Advanced music browsing is supported by Android 4.0+ smartphones and Apple iPhones 5.0+ (specific advanced functions vary by phone).
    • Song/Artist Information: The head unit will also display your stored music and music app's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title (not compatible with all apps).
Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control: When paired and connected to an iPhone with Siri via Bluetooth, the Kenwood KMM-X503 has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. Simply press-and-hold down on the head unit's Answer Button to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the KMM-X503 and its microphone. You even can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone with Siri. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

Note: The head unit's display will only indicate hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Kenwood KMM-X503; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

    Android & iPhone Integration

Android Open Accessory 2.0 (AOA 2.0) Connectivity: The Kenwood KMM-X503's front- or-rear-panel USB port lets you connect select Android (OS 4.1-7.1.2) smartphones that support AOA 2.0 for music playback. Kenwood does not guarantee operation with all Android devices, regardless of operating system. There are two Android AOA 2.0 modes to choose from based on what content you want to listen to and how you want to control it.
    • Hand Mode: The Kenwood KMM-X503 supports Android Open Accessory 2.0 (AOA 2.0), which lets you connect your Android (OS 4.1-7.1.2) smartphone to the KMM-X503's front- or rear-panel USB port and listen to stored music and music apps from your Android device through the Kenwood head unit. You'll be able to control basic playback functions such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track. Other advanced music navigation will still be done from your Android smartphone's touchscreen. In this mode, the head unit will not display song/artist information; only "Hand Mode" will show up on display. You'll continue to view song/artist information from the Android device's touchscreen. You'll also still be able to access other functions and applications from your Android smartphone's touchscreen, while listening to music through the head unit. If you make a call or answer a call from your smartphone while listening to music in this mode, the music will pause until you are finished with the call and then start back up again.
    • Browse Mode (via Kenwood Music Play App): Downloading the Kenwood Music Play app onto your Android (OS 4.1-7.1.2) smartphone with AOA 2.0 support not only allows you to listen to stored music from your Android device through the Kenwood digital media receiver connected via USB, but it also lets you browse your Android smartphone's music library from the head unit's front-panel controls. You can browse your store music library by Playlist, Artist, Song, Album, or Genre. The contents of a Playlist or Category can be searched alphabetically or numerically; you can even skip through the stored music files in specific increments (0.5/1/5/10%). You can also control Play/Pause and Previous/Next track from the head unit. In addition, the head unit will display song/artist information. You can exit the Kenwood Music Play app to access other functions and applications of your Android smartphone, while your stored music library is still playing through your head unit. If you make a call or answer a call from your smartphone while listening to music in this mode, the music will pause until you are finished with the call and then start back up again.
Note: Some Android devices may not support Android Open Accessory (AOA) 2.0. Kenwood does not guarantee operation with all Android devices.

iPhone Direct Connection: The Kenwood KMM-X503's front- or rear-panel USB port can be used to connect your Lightning Apple device or 30-pin iPhone 4S to the head unit. The USB connection allows for playback of stored music and music apps on your iPod or iPhone through Kenwood receiver. If you have a newer iPod/iPhone with the Lightning-connector, you can use Kenwood's Lightning connector-to-USB cable (113KCIP103 sold separately) or the Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the KMM-X503. If you have an iPhone 4S with a 30-pin dock connector, you can use the dock connector-to-USB cable that comes with your Apple device or a 3rd party "Made for iPod/iPhone" certified dock-to-USB cable (sold separately) to connect your iPhone 4S to the KMM-X503.

    • Head Unit Control: From the head unit's front-panel controls you can search for stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, and Composer. The contents of a Playlist or Category can be searched alphabetically or numerically; you can even skip through the stored music files in specific increments (0.5/1/5/10%). The KMM-X503 also supports Repeat (file/all) and Random (album/all) playback functions of stored music on your iPod/iPhone. In addition, you'll be able to control basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track) from stored music and select music apps streamed to your iPhone. You can also choose to control your compatible Apple iPhone or touch from its own touchscreen, instead of the head unit.
    • Song/Artist Info Display: The KMM-X503 will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information such as Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album title.

Smartphone Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1.5A of current to power and charge your connected Apple iPod/iPhone or Android smartphone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position (if your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it).

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood KMM-X503 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood KMM-X503 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KMM-X503 are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

6Ch/5V Pre-Outs + Sub Control: The KMM-X503 is fitted with front, rear and subwoofer 5 volt pre-outs. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading and features independent level control (-50 to +10).

Vehicle Settings: In order to optimize the sound quality in your vehicle, you can indentify the type of vehicle you have, select speaker sizes & locations, as well as configure listening distances.

    • Rear Speaker Location: You can indicate the location of your vehicle's Rear speakers. Choose from Door, Rear Deck, 2nd Row, or 3rd Row.
    • DTA (Digital Time Alignment): For a better sound-stage you can select your optimal listening position. You can choose from All, Front Left, Front Right or Front. You can also select to manually fine tune the sound stage, using Digital Time Alignment (DTA) by selecting the distance (0-20') for each individual speaker in the vehicle compared to your listening position.

High Pass & Low Pass Crossovers: You are able to select independent high pass crossovers for your tweeters, front speakers, and rear speakers; as well as a low pass crossover for the head unit's sub output.

    • Tweeter: Set high pass filter (HPF) for tweeters.
      • Frequency: 1kHz, 1.6kHz, 2.5kHz, 4kHz, 5kHz, 6.3kHz, 8kHz, 10kHz, 12.5kHz
      • Gain: -8 to 0 dB

Equalizer: The Kenwood KMM-X503 offers 8 EQ Presets for easy adjustment, a 13-band EQ for customized tuning, a Drive EQ mode to overcome road noise, and a Stage EQ for better imaging. Separate EQ settings and EQ presets can be stored for each source or you can apply one EQ preset or curve to all sources.

    • Preset EQ: The integrated equalizer offers 8 preset sound modes (Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, Drive EQ, or User) suitable for the music genre of your choice.
    • 13-Band EQ: The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 13-band EQ (62.5Hz, 100Hz, 160Hz, 250Hz, 400Hz, 630Hz, 1kHz, 1.6kHz, 2.5kHz, 4kHz, 6.3kHz, 10kHz, & 16kHz). Each frequency's gain level can be adjusted from -9dB to +9 dB, while the Q-factor can be adjusted to 1.35, 1.5, or 2.0
    • Drive EQ: The Drive EQ mode helps you hear your music over road noise. It boosts certain frequency ranges that become hard to hear due to road noise.
    • Stage EQ: Stage EQ virtually lifts the sound up to ear-level for better imaging inside your vehicle.

Audio Settings: The Kenwood KMM-X503 offers a variety of audio settings to further enhance your music listening experience.

    • Sound Reconstruction: When MP3, WMA, AAC files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Sound Reconstruction function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When Sound Reconstruction is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.
    • Space Enhancer & Sound Realizer: The Spacer Enhancer widens the soundstage inside your vehicle, while the Sound Realizer makes your music sound more realistic.
    • Loudness, Bass Boost & Bass Extension: The Loudness feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. The unit's Bass Boost enhances low bass frequencies at any volume level. There is also a Bass Extension feature which further enhances the unit's bass output at extremely low frequencies.
    • Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -15 to +6.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Remote Control

Remote App (for iOS: The Kenwood Remote App (for Apple iOS 8.0+) operates the Kenwood receiver like a wireless remote control from your USB or Bluetooth connected Apple iOS device. The Kenwood Remote App provides traditional touchscreen control, as well as directional and freeform gesture control from your compatible mobile device.

Is this unit waterproof? I am looking to install it on my 2005 Harley Davidson electra glide and it will likely see the elements.

I would say no unless you have a shield that covers it I would recommend I am marine stereo
    [ Pete  Aug 05, 2019 ]
    A
I see nothing to suggest it is waterproof. Most manufacturers make marine products that claim to be waterproof. The best ones I've seen are white and have a hard plastic/lexan cover to snap over the body and add another layer of protection. It's going to cost more, but bikes and boats are luxury items.
    [ Kevin  Aug 02, 2019 ]
    A
    No, not water proof.
    [ Gary  Aug 02, 2019 ]
    A
even though it is very well-made, I would not consider it to be waterproof. You may want to look at other options made for boats, etc. ask your crutchfield representative if they have anything special made for marine applications because they are more made for wet conditions.

Can Bluetooth sound come through when iPod is playing music? For example, I'm running Google Maps navigation for directions and playing music through iPod. Will the turn-by-turn notification come through while the music is playing through iPod?
    [ Niphon  Jul 05, 2019 ]
    3 answers
    A
Yes, you can hear Siri or any other voice-related functions (like a phone call) through the music when Bluetooth is playing. The music is quieted until the voice command is done, then resumes its original volume.
    [ Thomas  Jul 06, 2019 ]
    A
Yes. I play pandora while taking long trips and run my Google maps simultaneously. The map directions will announce while playing, and the music automatically reduces volume but continues to play. The same is true when a phone call comes through, although the music mutes completely with a cell phone call. Note that I am connecting a Samsung Android phone vice an Apple product but suspect an Apple product would work similarly.
    [ Robert  Jul 06, 2019 ]

Unfortunately no you would have to be using the bt audio source to here your your nav so you won't be able to here your iPod. The two sources at once feature through the bt would be one for calls and one for audio that's about it.

The instructions with the crutchfield adapter harness for my 98 corvette says to connect the red wire to the red wire from the kenwood kmm-x503 unit. There are two red wires on the crutchfield harness. Which do i connect? Or are both to be connected? They both go to the xsvi-2004.

    Q
does this unit have a dimmer wire for day / night settings?
    [ Marshall  Feb 25, 2019 ]
    7 answers
    A
ask the crutchfield representative about dimmer wiring for your vehicle, I think that is an option, they would know. I use the brightness control on the unit to control the brightness
    [ JON G  Aug 02, 2019 ]
    A
There is no wire that allows a connection to automatically dims the lights on the unit with the lights on the instrumentation panel of the vehicle. There is however, controls on the unit that can adjust the brightness. You can also set a timer based on the clock on the unit that will auto dim/auto bright based on the users input time settings.
    [ Scott  Feb 25, 2019 ]
    A
No, but it does have a dimmer setting based on the time.
    [ Sean  Feb 25, 2019 ]
