Lots of Bang for the Buck

This is a great stereo. Easy install. Great sound (and that is what really matters). I installed this in my daughter's Tracer, and it really is tremendous (especially at the price point). Lots of features, and the auxiliary cable makes it easy to incorporate her iPod into the mix. High quality unit, remote, sound. Kenwood is hard to beat!

The stereo was a great update to my 99' Honda Civic. The installation was easy with all the included wiring harnesses and face cover. I installed it in under an hour and a half which was my first time doing a job like this. The stereo itself gave my speakers a great sound which i didnt they thay had before. And the best part is that i can plug it into my iPod with the included input cable.

pros - cd/mp3/wma playback, hd ready, sat ready. Picks up a station at my house my old stereo would not, quality sound, treble, mid, and bass settings, more pre-sets than I could ever us (atlanta radio is pretty bad), nice look. cons - you can either have the clock or the station ID/track showing on the readout, it does not scroll through both like my sony does. Buttons for random/repeat/etc do not light up, so at night you cant see them. If you set the treble/mid/bass, then accidentally hit the button for preset eq's you have to reset your personal settings, it does not save them. All in all, I really like being able to listen to my mp3 cd's, like I said, Atlanta radio is bad. I think the most worthless feature is the remote. When you are sitting in your truck it is much easier to use the radio to change stations or tracks than to fumble with the remote, I would say it is almost dangerous to use the remote while driving. Maybe if I was parked somewhere and out of my truck the remote would be handy. I was looking for an inexpensive radio that played mp3's and I had a gift card which put this one close to $100 so the value is great. Crutchfield delivered as promised and I had it installed in about 10 minutes (not including the time it took me to solder my harness).

I have had several different receivers in my 98' Mustang Gt. By far, this receiver has alot of well rounded power and features compared to other name brands that I have owned. The one thing I noticed about this receiver is that the sound produced has minimal noise and crystal clear highs. The bass response is exceptional with minimal distortion at high / peak levels. The learning curve on how to operate this receiver is minimal in my opinion, all you have to do is read the manual. Once you've done this, the operation is simple and straight forward. I have tested this unit with stock speakers and Infinity Reference 6x8's, again this receiver performed very well with a little tweaking of the equalizer. The sound produced is phenominal compared to the stock stereo.

This is a beautiful unit and has a great sound. The only problem with the unit was setting up the clock. After reading the manual several times, I figured out that you have to go through the menu options and all was good. The manual would lead you to believe differently and was a little misleading. Other than that issue it is a great buy and with a KENWOOD connector I was able to connect my I-POD with ease!!!!

Seven years ago I purchased a Kenwood head unit to replace the factory deck in my Honda Accord. That Kenwood was very affordable, gave me the features I wanted, and was surprisingly powerful, especially in regard to bass. So now that I've had to put my old car to rest and customize its replacement, Kenwood seemed like a logical choice. They're still known for delivering a lot of bang for the buck. Problem is, this unit lacks bang. I teamed it with new Kenwood 5 1/4" speakers in the front doors and Rockford Fosgate 6x9s in the rear deck. The clarity was excellent, but I was taken aback by the absence of low-end warmth. Also, the control knobs require a delicate touch. I have found myself adjusting the volume too much or too little, or skipping tracks instead of pausing them (both these functions are controlled by the knob on the right). In that respect the remote is actually much handier. Yes, this receiver is pretty, and yes it is a decent value but it does not deliver the total package right out of the box like my previous one did. I have since added a Kenwood subwoofer to my system and it is VASTLY improved, but I'm a little irked that I was forced into doing that.

I have to say that this little H.U. is a powerhouse! I have a Y2K ford ranger and installed it with factory speakers and....WOW!!! What a difference from factory! Although, c'mon kenwood how about dimmer control and a easier set-up for the functions. If you can get past all that, the kenwood is great. I'm very happy with the unit and crutchfield. Now I have to upgrade the factory speakers with new ones.

Excellent Unit for the Money. Installed in 94 GMC Truck

Adam from Mesa, Arizona on 8/15/2006

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I purchased this unit to replace a Pioneer DEH-P3700MP that was stolen. The Pioneer faceplate kept popping out on my 1994 GMC Truck because the cups in the cup holders would hit the faceplate eject button. It is located in the lower right hand corner. This unit has it in the upper left hand corner, much better. This unit has a better sound quality than the Pioneer. I also like the look of this unit better. Much sleeker and not such a busy look. The unit is good for the price, but if you want more control of the EQ settings then upgrade to a higher model. This was perfect my beater work truck. I will chose Kenwood over Pioneer from now on. The manual is not correct for getting out of DEMO mode, but thankfully another reveiw tells you how to do it. I am reposting his instrucitons. In "Standby" Mode; hold in the "Menu" button for about three seconds. Move your control knob, until you see "DEMO ON", press the control knob in to turn it off The manual also says to jut select your source with the source button. But your sources have to be on in order to select it. For example my auxilary input was not sensed until it was on, then when I depressed the source button to CD it showed AUX all of a sudden.

Good, but could have been GREAT!

voxic from MD on 8/15/2006

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

As usual the Kenwood unit looks and sounds great. I replaced an old head unit with this because of the MP3/Satellite/HD features. The old unit was only $79.99 and had a few features on it that this more expensive Kenwood should have. Especially for the price tag. CONS: 1.) No way (that i see) to "save" a custom EQ setting. You can change the EQ, but you will loose the setting if you change to a preset EQ like "rock" or "jazz". 2.) No subwoofer level control. Again, had this feature on my (less expensive) old deck. I basically controlled the RCA outs on the back and I could turn up or down my connected sbwoofer amp. 3.) The control knob (smaller knob on the right of the unit face) is very sensitive and small. Hitting it "up" does something different than hitting it "left". In my bumpy truck it can be hard to hit it in a particular direction with precision. 4.) The manual is a MUST. I would have never figured out how to change the clock or turn off demo mode without it. It's not an intuitive unit. The same buttons turn on and off certain features depending on what "mode" the stereo is in. Most of the basics are done while in STANDBY. Isn't a problem, just don't lose the manual. 5.) As another poster said, the delay when changing modes or FM channels is too long. PROS: 1.) The speaker selection is very cool. You can set the sound for your size speakers (i.e. 6X9,5",OEM) 2.) SOunds great 3.) Looks great 4.) Plays MP3 5.) Volume knob is solid and has rubber around it (I like that) 6. Built very well

I purchased this item for my '00 Nissan Frontier King Cab XE. I had to buy a Scoshe dash kit because the one that Crutchfield sent left too much of a gap. Also use the factory brackets instead of what the directions call for. My truck came with the in dash cd player and once I got it out I found an Alpine cd player and a Clarion radio. I am thinking that if I would have purchase an Alpine or Clarion CD player I could have kept the changer in. The radio is okay for the money but it does not have enough power for my Polk component system. I am thinking about adding the bass link with the expansion for more power, once I save up some more money for it.

This is an awesome unit. You will love not having to flip down the face plate to insert a cd like so many other units do. The install was a piece of cake for a 2005 Ford Escape. If your installing in a Ford Escape be sure to put the back brace on the unit for what it's worth. The unit will mount with the pocket on top or bottom, I used it on the bottom. I ordered this unit on Monday afternoon and had it installed by 7PM on Wednesday thanks to Crutchfield's super fast shipping. You can't go wrong with Crutchfield and Kenwood. Thanks

Fits perfectly W/O supplied installation kit in Toyota PU..

Anonymous from Ogden, Ut on 4/1/2006

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Installation in '85 4WD. The supplied installation kit has you discarding the trimbezel pocket and butchering the trimbezel to accept a support bracket, resulting in a floppy installation with radio shoved in a supplied DIN Sleeve.. I began butchering and realized this sucks.. I read page 28 in Kenwood Instruction Manual which indicated installation in a Toyota or Nissan simply required the swapping of the mounting brackets from the old Toyota radio to the Kenwood.. Kenwood radio simply replaces the old Toyota radio exactly and trimbezel including the pocket beneath the radio can simply be replaced and you still have a place for your sunglasses.. So.. If you buy this radio look at Kenwood page 28 first.. Mounting is slick requiring only the brackets off your old radio.. Soldering is required on the wiring adaptor supplied by Crutchfield, they suggest taping the soldered joint, I suggest heat shrink tubing.. I'm happy with the unit.. Music again!! iPod and Sirius to follow..

I purchased for my Subaru Legacy. Needed pocket since my dash is double-DIN. Crutchfield sent me harness and pocket free of charge. Perfect!!! Now on to the HU. Overall I'm satisfied. Is feature rich. Has settings for Bass, Midlevel (which is rare), and Treble. Remote is bulky but I don't plan on using it at all. A few faults I've noticed. One, the HU is screwed in my car pretty tight but the detachable face latches on a bit flimsy. When I press a button the whole HU moves. Kinda annoying. Also the tuner response is slow. There is a split second pause between stations and when switching sources. I'm used to instant change like most head units. But like previously stated, it is feature rich. Preset EQ bands, etc. Overall satisfied but prefer Alpine "quality". Main reason I picked this HU was price, name brand, and the fact that is was near black, to match my dash. Thanks

I was a little skeptical after purchasing this unit. Upon reciept, I am very happy with it. It's a little darker (almost black) than in the pictures, which worked out to my advantage. It looks great during the day and night. It also has tons of features, and the remote comes in handy. I went to one of the big electronic stores and saw what they had for the same prices, and that's why I was worried. I didn't give it a 5 because there are bigger and badder units, but I am pleased with this one.

I recommend it if you have an IPOD you want to use, plus I use the input with my Sirius Satellite radio instead of using the fm transmitter. With 22 watts RMS it is very loud compared to the Clarion DB455MC I had in before that.

Features

MP3/WMA Playback: The KDC-MP2032 can play MP3 and WMA files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. Each disc should have a maximum of 8 directory levels, 100 folders, and 255 files per folder. During MP3/WMA playback, the unit displays any recorded ID3 Tag information.

Satellite Radio Ready: The head unit is directly compatible with the SIRIUS SIR-KEN1 Satellite Tuner for Kenwood (item # 607SIRKEN1). The Terk XMDirect universal XM Satellite Radio tuner (209XMD1000) can be connected to and controlled by the head unit when used with the XMDirect Smart Adapter for Kenwood (209XMDKEN1).

Note: In addition to the optional satellite tuner, you will also need the proper antenna and a subscription to SIRIUS or XM Satellite Radio.

HD Radio Ready: With an optional Kenwood HD Radio tuner (item # 113HR100TR), you will be able to receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display.

System Q Sound Control: Six EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (10kHz). The 6 preset curves with their respective bass, mid, and treble levels are as follows:

  • Rock: Bass +6, Mid +1, Treble +2
  • Pops: Bass +3, Mid +2, Treble +6
  • Easy: Bass +5, Mid 0, Treble -2
  • Top 40: Bass +3, Mid +1, Treble +8
  • Jazz: Bass +5, Mid +2, Treble +2
  • Natural: Bass 0, Mid 0, Treble 0

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of "SP Off" (flat), "SP OEM" (for OEM factory speaker systems), "SP 6x9/6" (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or "SP 5/4" (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

Supreme Setting: This setting improves the sound quality of low bit-rate MP3/WMA files by digitally enhancing the high frequencies.

Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, FM, AM, and CD changer).

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0.

CR-2 Advanced Tuner: This unit uses Kenwood's CR-2 Advanced tuner for clear radio reception. You can choose one of three tuning modes: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), or Manual.

Clean Reception System Circuit (CRSC): This circuit controls multi-path distortion by reducing stereo separation. As stereo separation is reduced, multi-path has less effect on the radio signal, improving reception in areas with tall buildings and mountains. The CRSC circuit can be turned on or off.

Last Position Memory: If the unit is shut off or switched to the tuner mode while a CD is playing, the next time CD is selected as the source, playback will resume from the point where it left off.

Disabled System Indicator: A red indicator will blink on the unit after the faceplate is removed, warning potential thieves. This feature can be turned On or Off.

Security Code: You can enter a 4-digit security code which must be used when the unit is removed from the vehicle, or the constant power source is disconnected from the unit. When constant power is restored to the unit, the security code must be entered before the unit becomes operational.

Remote Control: The KDC-MP2032 comes with the RC-517 wireless remote control with a full numeric keypad. It is powered by 2 "AA" batteries (supplied). The dimensions of the remote are: L=5.369", W=1.968", D=1.198".

Display Selections: When listening to the radio, you can switch the display between the currently tuned frequency and the clock. During disc play (internal player or external changer), you can switch between the disc or track title (with CD Text disc), track number/play time, or clock. If an MP3/WMA disc is playing, you can display the song title/artist name, album/artist name, folder name, file name, track number/play time, or clock.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the unit is in Standby mode, the face/button illumination is "keyed." In addition, while the unit is in Standby mode, you can switch between the Clock Display and "Standby." When the Clock Display is turned on and the unit is in Standby mode, the Clock Display is also "keyed." Pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely.

Changer Controls

Compatibility: This unit is directly compatible with Kenwood changers manufactured in 1998 or later. If the changer has an O-N switch, the switch will need to be set to the "N" position.

Changer Controls: In addition to basic disc navigation features, this unit has the following changer controls: direct disc access (using the remote), direct track access (using the remote), track intro scan, track repeat, disc repeat, disc random, and all disc random.

Auxiliary Input "Ready": When used with an optional adapter, this unit can accept input from an auxiliary source. When the CA-C1AUX adapter (item 113CAC1AX) is used, you cannot connect a CD changer to the head unit because the adapter plugs into the DIN changer control connection on the head unit. When the KCA-S220A 2-changer switch (item 113KCAS220) is used, you can connect a CD changer and an auxiliary audio source at the same time. When an auxiliary audio source is connected, you can choose from one of six names for the source: Aux Ext, TV, DVD, Video, Game, or Portable.

CD Text/MD Display: When connected to a CD Text capable CD changer or an MD changer, this unit can display disc and track titles for discs encoded with disc and track title information. The text information can be scrolled manually or automatically.
