Metra 70-1761 receiver wiring harness

This vehicle-specific wiring harness adapter makes connections between your new car stereo and your car's electrical system. It works with select 1987-up Toyota, Lexus, Scion, Subaru, and Geo vehicles.

First, attach the color-coded wires on your Crutchfield-supplied harness to the wires from your new stereo. If you're not using a soldering iron, we recommend that you purchase some wire connectors to secure the connections. Check out our handy article on three ways to connect the wiring harness here.

Now, once this harness is connected to your new stereo, you'll be able to plug right into your car's factory radio connector. This harness saves installation time since you won't have to cut factory wires individually, and it also enables you to re-install the factory radio if needed. A detailed instruction sheet comes with the harness. Warranty: 60 days.

Please read this important note: This harness may not contain provisions for every wire needed to complete your installation, and it will not accommodate special navigation, video, or factory steering wheel control connections. You will need a special adapter if you want your factory steering wheel audio controls to work with your new stereo.

Connections:

  • 12V constant power
  • 12V switched power
  • chassis ground
  • power antenna turn-on
  • dimmer
  • left front speaker +/-
  • right front speaker +/-
  • left rear speaker +/-
  • right rear speaker +/-

Note: Most vehicles will require additional installation parts — please identify your vehicle if you haven’t done so. You can also call an Advisor for more information.

Man, this thing was simple to hook up. I haven't done any wiring before, but these wires are standard colors; the nonstandard wires are clearly labeled; they don't require stripping, but rather the insulation is pre-cut at an appropriate distance from the end; and they fit perfectly in our 2001 Toyota Camry.

Pros: Already stripped, easy to identify wires, standard colors

Metra Made This Installation Easy

Greg from Honolulu, HI on 1/11/2019

2004 Toyota RAV4
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was the easiest dash stereo installation I have done because of the Metra wiring harnesses and Posi-Products wire connectors. Getting the wiring right in tight working quarters has always been a problem for my big hands and would have been even worse with my fading vision. With Metra I could pre-wire on my desk and just plug together in the car. Worked the first time!

Pros: Perfect fit I will be able to re-use if I ever change the head unit again (unlikely)

Old enough to remember the days when you had to figure out each and every wire and where it went. Simple, accurately color coded, and perfect fit. Truly amazed at how straightforward and streamlined the process was. I realize that even when you select the right model, make, and year there will still be some that aren't perfect, but Crutchfield has, in my opinion, gone to great lengths to eliminate those situations.

Patrick from Westfield, MA on 10/4/2018

2000 Toyota 4Runner
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I use Metra harnesses exclusively in my own vehicle installations. I have done installs on several friend's cars, and they usually pick up the "S" brand harnesses when they buy their decks at the big box discount store. Metra is far and wide the better product. The pins inside the connectors are heavier duty and the wiring is OEM grade. This harness is no different, top quality and all of the wires needed for my 2000 Toyota 4Runner. Used a heat gun and solder-seal heat shrink butt connectors.

Pros: Correct fit, highest quality

Metra 70-1761 wiring harness

Ben from Nipomo, CA on 5/7/2018

2005 Toyota Camry
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This wiring harness might work for a Camry that does not have the JBL amp. But it definitely did not work in my car, (2005 Camry XLE with JBL amp). You need Metra 70-8113, (if you want to retain the factory amp, this is the easiest way to go). There is a different connector though, if you want to bypass the amplifier. Also, this does not address the antenna inputs. The Camry XLE radio has two antenna inputs. Most replacement radios only have one antenna input jack. To get best reception, you need an antenna splitter, so you can tie both inputs into the one radio input jack. And you will need an adapter, one of the antenna inputs is smaller than a normal Motorola antenna jack.

Pros: Will make for easy hook-up for vehicles that it would apply to.

Cons: Just didn't apply to my vehicle.

Mfg did not do their homework. They missed the front speaker connections which caused me to reinstall the factory XM receiver factory add on (I think). Did make it work but doubled install time.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Worked. Fits perfectly as interface between aftermarket radio harness and vehicle wiring (2004 Toyota Sienna). Easy to strip and solder. 2 unused harnesses left in dash after installation, presumably for the steering wheel controls. Steering wheel controls do not work after using this adapter. I didn't need them, so it did not bother me.

Pros: Good price for the amount of work saved. Fits perfectly as interface between aftermarket radio harness and vehicle wiring

Cons: Steering wheel controls do not work after using this adapter.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Cures A LOT of supposed problems. Did much research on the web, visited chat rooms, etc..., everybody said that "bypassing" the factory amp involved a lot of cutting and splicing in very cramped quarters. With some trepidation, I gave the Crutchfield supplied Metra wiring harness a try. Attached it to the new head unit as per Crutchfield's directions and everything was a simple "plug and play" operation. I could not be happier with the sound and the ease of installation. Crutchfield ROCKS!

Pros: ease of installation, cures a lot of perceived problems.

Provided every connection I need for any easy install of my new receiver. I like to be sure the wiring is solid, so I tinned all wires with solder and then used crimp caps for solid connections. I zip tied the wire bundles to dash structure to be sure there were no rattles. The extra wires I simply crimp capped in case I needed them later. The documentation made it real easy to match up the wires (although the text was very small).

Pros: Perfect matches on the wiring, easy to use, good documentation.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I deviated a bit from the included instructions and soldered each connection to the new radio harness, covering each solder joint with a short piece of heat shrink tubing, then covered the entire harness with a larger piece of heat shrink tubing. Of course, those were placed on the wires and moved to one end before I soldered. There's something about mechanical crimp connections that bother me, even among similar metals. Given the temperature and humidity extremes that cars experience in my part of the country, I don't want to make my connections the source of any galvanic corrosion. The wire color codes matched my new receiver's harness exactly, so that made connection a breeze. The most important thing is that it plugged directly into the car's connectors. Nice and easy!

Disappointed with the "Metra 70-1761 Receiver Wiring Harness" I recently purchased. This was used to install a Sony CDXGT62IPW stereo in a 2007 Toyota Tacoma double cab. The color codes matched perfectly between the instruction sheets for both the Metra adapter and the Sony unit. Once installed, the speaker controls were completely wrong. (Balance controlled front to rear... Fade controlled left to right) Crutchfield telephone support confirmed the the adapter was indeed assembled correctly from the factory. The Sony worked perfectly in the Chevy I removed it from. Must be a Toyota issue. I suppose I could accept this because I rarely use these functions.

Pros: Clear wiring instructions and color codes

Cons: Not quite right in my Tacoma

Super easy to use. Make radio installation "Plug and Play". You simply connect all the same colored wires (i.e. yellow to yellow, orange to orange, etc.) and they you just plug in your new radio. Much, Much easier than cutting up your factory wiring and then doing a bunch of splices.

Pros: Easy to use. Don't have to cut up your factory wiring. Makes radio installation "Plug and Play"

Cons: None really. Crutchfield includes them for free, so you can't even complain about the price.

Harness worked great. The green wire from the stereo that needs to be connected to the parking brake was fun to figure out.

Pros: Wired up well. No issues.

Cons: If your stereo has a green parking brake wire then you will need to look up online how to install it. Maybe some additional instruction in the install guide on the need to review manufacturers instructions for installing a parking brake wire. Otherwise, all was good.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am a novice at all this. This was my first time installing anything in my car. I used this harness in a '98 Camry to install a Pioneer DEH-X7800BHS. The install was simple and all of the parts connected perfectly. I took a few minutes to attach all of the well color coded wires, and then just snapped in place. This was a great piece of equipment, and a simple install.

Pros: Color coded, all parts fit properly

Cons: They had taped off the end of the blue (remote control) wire, but did not include a reason why. I called Crutchfield and they told me to simply strip the end and attach it to my harness' blue wire, but they could have saved me a call if they'd just explained why it was different than the others.

I got this harness for a 1999 Toyota 4Runner where I replaced the factory deck with a Pioneer deck. My review of the Pioneer is elsewhere. While I understand that there is a need for an adapter to bridge the existing factory wiring harness with a replacement deck, what I don't understand is having to spend over an hour wire stripping and soldering over 30 wires to connect the wiring harness with the deck's wiring harness. Why not just supply an adapter that already does the job vs forcing the user to solder all those wires? Luckily I'm pretty experienced with a soldering gun but for those out there who are not, it's something than can easily be rectified at the retail level.

This was my first time installing a car stereo. You literally just match the colors, strip and crimp. The orange wire was not needed so capped and crimped that wire by itself. The stereo worked on the first try!

Definitely needed

DrF from South Park, PA on 6/7/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It is an adapter that is definitely needed. I had hoped to disconnect the older Sony receiver and simply attach the new one, since I had used a similar adapter in the past. But, Sony changed their connector type and I had to do it all over again. The cables state on them what each one is used for. Unfortunately the Sony cables do not state anything. Anyhow, once this issue is solved it is a simple mix and match. The adapter works fine and as far as I know they last a lifetime.

Pros: Easy to use...

Cons: ... if you know which cable of the Sony receiver connects to the corresponding cable of the adapter.

The adapter harness that came with my Pioneer head unit made installation a breeze. Even if you're not that handy, with a little patience the photo instructions walk you through the whole process of installing the unit. As you could guess, everything is color coded and some of the wires already come pre-striped. I would recommend this product.

Nice and Easy

Nick in CT from Storrs Mansfield, CT on 5/22/2016

2000 Toyota Tundra
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I 1st removed my factory radio in my 00 Toyota Tundra, I thought Crutchfield had sent me the wrong harness. My stock radio had a large 20 pin connector and this harness had two smaller connectors. A quick call to tech support and they explained that once the factory amp was removed, this harness clips into that connection and the factory radio connector is no longer needed. They were right! Once wired this to the replacement radio it plugged right into my Tundras wiring harness and everything works like it should

Pros: Fits factory harness from Amp

Cons: Wish the directions had explained the connection to the amp harness and not the radio
