About the Metra 70-1783 Receiver Wiring Harness

Metra 70-1783 Receiver Wiring Harness

This vehicle-specific wiring harness makes connections between your new car stereo and your car's electrical system.

Metra 70-1783 Receiver Wiring Harness

This vehicle-specific wiring harness makes connections between your new car stereo and your car's electrical system.

First, attach the color-coded wires on your Crutchfield-supplied harness to the wires from your new stereo. If you're not using a soldering iron, we recommend that you purchase some wire connectors to secure the connections. Check out our handy article on three ways to connect the wiring harness here.

Now, once this harness is connected to your new stereo, you'll be able to plug right into your car's factory radio connector. This harness saves installation time since you won't have to cut factory wires individually, and this also enables you to re-install the factory radio if needed. A detailed instruction sheet comes with the harness. Warranty: 60 days.

Please read this important note: This harness may not contain provisions for every wire needed to complete your installation, and it will not accommodate special navigation, video, or factory steering wheel control connections. You will need a special adapter if you want your factory steering wheel audio controls to work with your new stereo.

This, along with the guide from Crutchfield, made the radio swap completely painless. I had the harnesses joined together in less than 5 minutes, and that included time to go to the fridge for a beer. Swapped out radio in less than 5 minutes, and wiring was flawless.

Pros: Didn't have to chop wires off, colors on harness matched colors on head unit

Cons: Wasn't free, didn't add 2000 watts to this tiny man-beast of a car

I decided to change the factory head unit on my 2008 smart fortwo and to save me time and also to keep the installation as "clean" as possible I also got the adapter. Very helpful and handy. Even though there's a wire color reference on the back of the package, Metra also uses cables that are labeled themselves - which I found to be very useful when matching them to my HU's harness.

Pros: Wires are labeled themselves to help match head unit's harness; Well constructed;

Wires in the wrong place - Don't splice - move

MeanDude from Greensboro, NC on 3/11/2016

2013 Fortwo - As others indicated, Metra messed up, or Smart changed something and no one told Metra. Either way, Metra should have been on it. Deal is that the switched lead needs to slide two spots to the left (as you look at the back of the harness) and the illumination lead needs to drop in between the switched lead and the ground. I called Crutchfield (great people) and I was told that I could insert a needle (sewing needle worked great) to the left of the pin (through the front/side that plugs in) and tug the wire to get it out. It worksd like a champ. Move the wire, snap it back in and you're good to go. Before buying into what I'm telling you, grab your tester or lamp and assure your car is wired like mine - and that they haven't fixed the setup since my post.

Pros: Typical color codes, plug seems to slide in and lock without issue.

Cons: The one I received had contacts in the wrong position for my 2013 Fortwo.

The switched power pin was in the wrong spot

Everything about the product was fine except that the switched power pin was in the wrong spot. I ended up having to go in with a multimeter track down the correct wire on the factory harness and splice in. The exact reasonreason why I used this was so I would have to cut up the factory harness.

Pros: Its 99% there

Cons: The one pin didn't line up with switched power

This wiring harness worked great. It includes a wiring diagram and between that and the wiring info that came with my receiver I was able to easily figure out the wiring. I also cross checked the wiring online. Apparently different people wire the front and back in different ways in this car, but I wired the front speakers outputs to the factory tweeters that I left in the car. And I wired the rear speaker outputs to the door speakers (which I replaced). I left the factory underseat subwoofer in the car and left its wiring unchanged. This all seems to work okay for me. I can use the fader to adjust the tweeter level.

This piece fit the SMART harness great. The only thing i am going to have to modify is that the SMART does not have rear speakers and i am going to place some in the car, so I will have to come off the rear leads from the receiver and either make the connections directly or, more than likely, gonna get a connection and make another connection point.

Product Research

Crutchfield Wiring Harness: Crutchfield wiring harnesses prevent you from having to cut your vehicle's factory radio plug when replacing your factory radio with an aftermarket head unit. Simply solder or crimp the Crutchfield wiring harness to your aftermarket head unit's harness (solder & crimps not included), plug the aftermarket head unit's plug into the rear chassis of the aftermarket head unit, and plug the Crutchfield wiring harness into your vehicle's factory radio plug.

Note: Installation tools, hardware, & accessories are not included & sold separately. Please see the Accessories tab for recommendations & availability.

Wiring Notes: If the Crutchfield wiring harness is not equipped with a ground wire, you will need to ground the aftermarket head unit's ground wire to the metal chassis of your vehicle. Some vehicle's may require you to bypass the vehicle's factory amplifier (in another location from factory radio) or hardwire certain connections. If your vehicle is equipped with factory steering wheel controls, an additional adapter is required & sold separately.

Q
How to get the factory subwoofer to work with this harness ?
[ scott  Jul 04, 2017 ]

A
You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.
