Overview

This vehicle-specific wiring harness makes connections between your new car stereo and your car's electrical system.

Metra 70-8590

This vehicle-specific wiring harness makes connections between your new car stereo and your car's electrical system.

First, attach the color-coded wires on your harness to the wires from your new stereo. If you don't know how to use a soldering iron, we recommend that you purchase some wire connectors that you'll use to attach this harness to your factory harness.

Now, once this harness is connected to your new stereo, you'll be able to plug right into your car's factory radio connector. This harness makes installing your new stereo easier, and allows you to put the factory radio back when you sell your vehicle or return it at the end of the lease. A detailed instruction sheet comes with the harness. Warranty: 60 days.

Please read this important note: This harness may not contain provisions for every wire needed to complete your installation, and it will not accommodate special navigation, video, or factory steering wheel control connections (see Details for a list of connections). You will need a special adapter if you want your factory steering wheel audio controls to work with your new stereo.

Note: Most vehicles will require additional installation parts — please identify your vehicle if you haven’t done so. You can also call an Advisor for more information.

Installed in 2006 330cic. No issues, soldered and used heat shrink typing beforehand. Dropped one star due to not having Pin 7 equipped, used for steering wheel controls. Forced to splice into wire behind original plug. Not a huge issue, but would be much cleaner install with Pin 7.

Pros: Worked as advertised. Had every pin needed (except SWC) Colors matched new head unit. Connected everything on my workbench first, made install a snap.

Cons: Needed an additional pin for steering wheel controls. A bit more length on the wires would have helped with hiding.

I had my friend do the wiring for me, I have stock radio in the 330ci I have so this wired perfectly to the old stereo head I had, a favorite one. This connector fit perfectly, it doesn't feel like it at first but the BMW connector "locks down" and holds the connection in place. My friend told me the wiring was cake, but then again he's not new to it. The color guide on the bag was a nice reference for him when connecting the old harness of to this.

This harness was included for free by Crutchfield and it worked perfectly with my Pioneer DEH-X7800BHS. Thank you Crutchfield! Installation was very easy and I would highly recommend the Posi-Products connectors unless you're an expert with a soldering iron.

Pros: can't beat the price, connected perfectly to the connector in my 23 year old BMW 325i and although the fit was tight (old BMW connector is very bulky) I was able to find space

Cons: none I can think of

Very clear installation, wires are marked and color coded so its very easy to solder and connect to stereo harness.

Pros: Very clear instructions

Cons: Difficult to snap into the cars harness, didnt fit well. Had to force it to connect securely, thought it was going to break. Didnt come with steering wheel control wires, its ridiculous to purchase that as a separate option. Should be integrated.

Does what it needs -- connects to vehicle harness

Pros: (Mostly*) eliminates need to cut factory wiring.

Cons: *Does not have wire for steering wheel control. To use a control-convertor requires cutting one factory wire. All wires on this part would benefit from being longer.

Easiest install so far!

R Wood from NC on 7/24/2016

1998 BMW Z3
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have installed quite a few sound systems over the years, and a few have come with adapters, but this was the easiest one to date. Thanks to Crutchfield's outstanding library of installation information, this adapter was automatically suggested (and included for free) when I bought my head unit. Before I took anything apart, I soldered and heat-shrinked the Pioneer harness to this adapter, and that was the only wiring I had to do. It literally took me longer to get the old radio out than it did to put this new one in. A must-have for any head unit replacement, and well worth the cost.

Pros: - Perfect fit - Package included a list of pin-outs, so it could easily be pre-wired to new radio's harness - Inexpensive (in my case, free)

Cons: - None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well all the components of my sound system work so I can't complain about that but this harness is about the size of my house. I actually had to remove the vent covers above the stereo and store the harness up there because it is so bulky. I ran the plug back down from there into the DIN bay. Also, this didn't fit very well into the female part coming out of the car and I had to force it, snapping some pieces on both respective connectors. Still got a firm hold and like I said everything works so I can't complain. Just took a lot more work than I was really hoping to do. Of course, everyone reading this is the owner of a BMW, so you are all familiar with that scenario lol.

Pros: It works

Unlike other, less expensive harnesses that appear similar, this one is well worth the extra money. Pins are sturdy and wires all matched across the board. There were no duplicate colors and everything worked for me first time. Very happy with this recommendation.

Pros: Strong pins that don't move, wires all colored correctly.

Cons: None that I ran into.

This plug fits the BMW radio wiring harness properly.

Pros: It makes installing an aftermarket head unit easy without cutting the factory wiring harness.

Cons: The plug itself is bulky., The BMW harness plugs directly into the back of the factory radio. It can be difficult to fit the plug in the dash along with the aftermarket head unit.

Works well

Scott N from Massachusetts on 1/2/2016

1994 BMW 325I
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The harness fits the factory harness which I had to pry of the back of my '94 325 convertible factory radio. It would have been helpful to know that the blue wire labeled "power antennae" needs to be connected to the blue wire that will power the amplifier. There is no sound with out this connection because the amplifier doesn't get turned on. Had to go to youtube to find that out. Otherwise connection was good and wires were easy to map.

Pros: Fits, wires are easy to identify

Cons: Need to get the blue antenna wire on the radio to the blue wire on this harness in order to power the remote amp. There are no directions for this.

Fits well into the BMW connector. De-mystifies the wiring connections; match wire colors to the replacement radio and plug it into the car. Warning: does not enable the factory trunk-mounted CD player.

Pros: Clean fit to factory plug color-matched the replacement (JVC) unit, so connection to new unit was easy

Cons: physically big (necessarily so), so takes up a bit of space in the radio well. This could also be a "Pro" comment, because it's no bigger than it has to be to fit to the factory plug. does not tie-in the factory trunk-mounted CD player does not tie-in the factory cell phone microphone

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fits perfect, and adapts perfect, however it is huge, which makes it difficult to insert the receiver. They need to make it less bulky. However tech support was very informative and very helpful.

Pros: Perfect fit, you don't need to cut any wires.

Cons: Expensive, very bulky.

Wiring Harness: This wiring harness prevents you from having to cut your vehicle's factory radio plug when replacing your factory radio with an aftermarket head unit. Simply solder or crimp the wiring harness to your aftermarket head unit's harness (solder & crimps not included), plug the aftermarket head unit's plug into the rear chassis of the aftermarket head unit, and plug the wiring harness into your vehicle's factory radio plug.

Note: Installation tools, hardware, & accessories are not included & sold separately. Please see the Accessories tab for recommendations & availability.

Wiring Notes: If the wiring harness is not equipped with a ground wire, you will need to ground the aftermarket head unit's ground wire to the metal chassis of your vehicle. Some vehicle's may require you to bypass the vehicle's factory amplifier (in another location from factory radio) or hardwire certain connections. If your vehicle is equipped with factory steering wheel controls, an additional adapter is required & sold separately.
