Unexpectedly awesome. I have been installing these "modified fit" head units for years but this really takes the guess work out and leaves you with a nice clean fit and finish. It's still not custom fit and finish but it makes the installation easy.
Pros: Easy to install and use.
Cons: 1. Needs more screws included to allow 4 on each side to make it very secure. 2. Difficult to remove after snapping in place. You better have bought all of the accessories and have them installed before you finish the installation.

Strange Design
John from Bellevue, WA on 1/27/2021
2001 Ford Econoline
For some reason, this kit places the receiver recessed back into the dashboard instead of up flush with it. This not only looks bad, but it makes certain designs of equipment difficult to operate. I threw this away and bought the AI kit - fits perfectly and completely flush where I want it. Dear Crutchfield, please replace this kit with the AI kit, or at least give the customer a choice between the two. Also, I was "given" this plus several other small items for "free" with my order. But I didn't need or want any of these items. I'd like to see Crutchfield give the customer the option of either accepting these free items or reducing the amount due on their order by the value of these items. Giving away small items the customer doesn't want or can't use just feels like a cheap gimmick to me - leaves me with a poor impression of the underlying Crutchfield business model.
Pros: Free
Cons: Strange design that recesses the receiver.. why?

My radio required that I open up the top a little to make room for it. Once I did that, however, this dash kit made it look like the radio came with the car. It is completely seamless. The only downside is that you need to make sure you have all of the accessories or upgrades you want when you install your new radio as once this dash kit latches, that's it, you have to remove the dash to get the radio out.
Pros: Very nice appearance.
Cons: No instructions so you have to figure out how best to locate screws. Once it is installed, that's it, you aren't getting it out.

Overall the brackets for my 2004 ford ranger fit in well. I had the shave off the bottom plastic lip for my dash opening for my new double din unit to fit in place
Pros:
Cons: The instructions were small. I had a hard time figuring out how that this bracket was meant to snap into place on the dashboard frame, which I also had shaved off. It would be helpful to have a small video on the website next to the product to show people how this all comes together.

metra dash kit, convert 96 Explorer to a double din size display
Crutchfield customer from Katy, TX on 7/6/2020
1996 Ford Explorer
I am absolutely thrilled to get rid of the old aftermarket adapter that had the ugly slot in it and to get a double din size touch screen so thank you , thank you, thank you for making this. I am so much more happy with my dash than I used to be. I will say it is a good bit of work to cut the factory trim plate as needed but it is worth it. I'll give two SLIGHT (and what I consider only CONSTRUCTIVE) criticisms. 1. If they could possibly provide a plastic or paper template to mark where to trim the factory plate, it would save a lot of time. You are afraid to cut too much so you get close and keep taking a little off and try again (rinse and repeat.) 2. At least on my head unit, after installation the head unit sits further back in the console than what most people would like. This may be caused by my head unit or it may be the kit.
Pros: Getting a modern double din display is a huge improvement in appearance over my previous single din sized unit and ugly trim plate adapter. The cost is very reasonable.
Cons: It is more work than it seems like it should be and you need a dremmel or similar (which I did have.) It is probably the fault of the vehicle trim plate and stereo size but there is a lot of space there. It is hard to believe you have to do all of this to get a decent size display in a slot as big as the one available in the dash.

This is a good product that got messed up by poor instructions. The instructions state: "Cut all obstructions from the radio opening." When the requirement is to cut the obstruction from the top and bottom leaving the sides alone. this error was fixed and I actually liked the location better that where it would have been using the original side flanges, a little closer to the front of the cavity.
Pros: Quality parts that fit well and look good.
Cons: Mean what you say or say what you mean. I expect instructions to be concise especially when I haven't done and install like this before.

A better dash installation kit must exist!
Crutchfield customer from Leverett, MA on 4/20/2020
2007 Ford Econoline
I've have used installation kits from Crutchfield in the past and been impressed, but I was very disappointed with this kit. This was used to "install" a double DIN unit into the dash of a Ford E-350 (and is used for other similar Fords). It requires you to cut away portions of the dash at the top and bottom of the opening which is a delicate operation. I used a rotary tool to do so and can't see how you could do it any other way without damaging the dash. The plastic pieces from the Metra kit screw into the sides of the stereo and then you snap it into the dash. The installation is not elegant; there is a small plastic strip that snaps in to fill a gap left at the bottom, but there is still a gap at the top of the hole and the large black plastic pieces of the kit on the sides look awkward- definitely not a factory-installed look! Most importantly, the kit warns that once the new stereo is installed you won't be able to remove it without dis-assembling the dash. I learned that indeed this is true, as the stereo I purchased stopped working after two hours, thus I had to remove it to return it. Disassembly of the dash to simply remove a stereo is a real pain and a pretty "old school" way to replace a car stereo. There has to be a better kit that would allow installation and removal without going through so much bother.
Pros: none
Cons: Does not look like a seamless factory installation. To remove the stereo you have to disassemble the dash!

Perfect fit on the radio, but a little light in the instructions. By trial and error, not wanting to take too much material out of the dash slot, I got a hole big enough to fit the radio in, albeit tightly. The radio snapped into place and looks like it should, but it fit so tightly I don't know how I will get it out again if I need to.
Pros: Perfect fit for my radio, lots of holes and slots to attach to just about any other radio I can imagine. Side latches to retain the radio in place when properly installed.
Cons: Could use better instructions regarding necessary clearance for installation.

Doesn't really work in my Ranger. You have to cut the factory lip out of the dash panel and then there is nothing with this mount to keep it from sliding into the dash or back out. I had to use screws to anchor it and it doesn't look very nice.

Cons: Don't really work. Screw holes are slotted and mount slides forward when trying to tighten. Poor design. Too universal

This could have been designed much better than it is. I have had fit problems with other Metra product's before but the way this one works is poor. One problem is once the receiver is popped in, that is it. It can not be removed without removing the entire panel assembly. That is not so bad. What is bad, is that the receiver drops back into the dash too deep, making it very difficult to use the volume wheel. (See pictures.) To help deal with this problem, I velcroed a remote control to my center console and I operate volume from that.
Pros: Very good price
Cons: Not well designed

great kit that looks factory in my 07 escape, you need to make sure you can remove the dash panel without needing to unscrew items from behind the radio before final installation as once the radio is in you are not removing it without removing the entire dash panel. Not a big deal if you think ahead. Loses a star though because with all the space they cover on the sides it would have been plausible to include some release mechanism so that dash removal is not necessary for radio removal.
Pros: great looks
Cons: engineers needed to make some sort of latching mechanism to remove radio as entire dash removal seems a bit lazy

Guest from Nellysford, VA on 8/18/2019
It does a reasonably good job of adapting the radio to fit the enclosure. One fix is needed, the plastic sides where the multi-fit holes are located is too soft. When tightening the screws to a secure level the plastic holes deform. This can yield an angled fit on the radio. The trim "bar" works great to finish off the opening. For the Sony radio with a volume knob the curved sides are very close to the volume knob, making it a bit difficult to grab what is a small knob.
Pros:
Cons: Making the side plates from metal would be an improvement.

Finishes the dash off great. Looks like a factory install. Instructions could have been a bit better. Took me a while to realize that the bezel that came on the new receiver needed to be removed in order for the rails to seat properly against the unit. Once I got over that hurdle the install went much smoother.
Pros: Great fit
Cons: Unclear instructions

Very good and solid, but needs the right size hole.
Crutchfield customer from Cypress, TX on 8/5/2019
1998 Ford Ranger
I was a little hesitant to think this would give me a really solid mounting, but it fit into the dash very solidly. I did have to cut my '98 Ford Ranger dash hole a little, and since I could cut it precisely that helped a lot. If you have a good hole, it will fit solidly. I give one star off for not having countersunk screws. The pan head screws were a pain to fit as we slid the unit into the dash. It barely cleared, and since the holes in the plastic were designed for countersunk screws, it would have been much better to have them. Maybe the screws were from the stereo instead of this kit. not sure.
Pros: Solid if the hole is cut right
Cons: Pan head screws (maybe this was the stereo's fault) didn't fit as well as countersunk screws would have

Pros: Easy installation, gives a professional install look as if it is a part of the radio bezel, great price if bought by itself, even better when its included with a stereo purchase!
Cons: No cons about this kit

Fit well, holds the receiver securely, clean appearance when installed. The single downside, for my Ford Ranger application was not having an easy release mechanism. I had forgot to connect the microphone to the receiver and had to remove lower dash trim pieces to get behind the receiver.
Pros: Very easy to install. Clean fit. Nice trim appearance.
Cons: Needs a way to release the installed receiver.

When I received this kit I was unsure of how it would look in the dash. I couldn't see how it would possibly look good. It was extremely easy to install. The two flat pieces attach to the side of the receiver with screws, and then the entire stereo is fit into the dash opening. It clicked into place and fits well and is completely sturdy! It looks great, and is bulletproof!
Pros: Price Ease of use Appearance Function
Cons: Better instructions, and show a picture of what this looks like installed!

Charles from Post Falls, ID on 2/27/2019
2007 Ford Escape
Fits perfectly and gives the install a professional look. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because the kit is made in such a way that the stereo can't be easily removed once it clicks into place. I feel like the manufacturer could have come up with some way to make the stereo removable. Tip: For cutting away the extra plastic material around the factory dash opening, I used an oscillating multi-tool rather than a rotary Dremel. I found the tool at Walmart for only $18 and was able to get the cuts made in just a few minutes.
Pros: Perfect fit, looks professional
Cons: Once the stereo is installed, it can't be removed without taking apart the entire dash.

Provides a great finish for a double DIN install, highly recommended
Mark from Howard, KS on 1/24/2019
2000 Ford Excursion
Have used one before on my F-350 and really liked the outcome as that stereo used buttons for controls. For this install the only downside at all was the stereo uses a volume knob, which sits extremely close to the curved part of the plastic on the left. Can still roll the volume knob from the top, bottom, and right side but cannot grasp the knob with thumb and fingers like one would normally do. Minor inconvenience that doesn't really take away from the clean install this provides. If I had any complaints about the kit at all it would be that the plastic deforms easily when tightening the screws into the stereo. It is still sturdy but if there were a way to add a little robustness to the screw holes that would make the kit 100%. Contrary to what is stated, you can actually put your factory radio back in after modifying your dash but you will be able to see the gaps above and below the unit if you look for them. Someone had previously modified the dash in my Excursion and I didn't notice until I removed the factory radio.
Pros: Looks great installed Very easy to attach to stereo and slide into dash
Cons: Could be a little more robust around screw holes Stereos with a volume knob could find slight interference with the curved part of the plastic Dash modification is required but simple tools like an aggressive file can easily open up the dash

Crutchfield directions state you need to trim the mount point on the dashboard. This is a gross understatement - and part of an overall set of vague instructions without any pictures (they provide generic, non-descriptive cartoons). We needed to grind away from top and bottom to make a complete rectangular opening without the extra plastic that comes with the original 2002 ford escape radio. We got it half in and then it got stuck. Tech support was useless and said I'd need to take apart the entire front dashboard. It was an infuriating phone call. I eventually got the front media panel off and strong-armed the radio affixed to this back out of the dash. I then ground away the rest of the plastic from the opening (not trim or file - I needed a grinding point to do the job) and it went in. The final install looks horrible and they only give 1 decorative strip. I will have to contact Crutchfield to get another strip - one for the top and one for the bottom. I don't recommend using this harness. It took over 4 hours of personal labor to get installed and I still need to mount the decorative strips.
Pros: It eventually may hold your radio snug.
Cons: Directions and tech support were useless and extremely misleading.

garbage kit.

2001 Ford F-250 Super Duty
it's a shame you can't give this kit negative stars. The best thing I can say about it is that it was free with the purchase of the stereo. Let's talk about everything that sucks about this "kit". First of all, it's not a kit, it's two cheap pieces of plastic that you screw to the sides of the stereo. The plastic is so cheap, that you can't actually run the screws in without wrecking the plastic. And if you do get it to screw in, the physical act of pushing the assembled kit into the (modified) dash will rip the screws through the plastic, anyway, and leave you with a odd-fitting stereo. After bouts of frustration, anger, and compound profanity laced diatribes that questions the exact species and procreation method attributable to the person who 'designed' this kit, I finally was able to work a solution using double sided tape between the bracket faces and the stereo chassis. bonus points: the mostly useless instructions tell you that this is a one-time permanent install. Or in other words, once the stereo is in, you need to take the whole dash apart to get it back out. Don't worry though, the instructions are reliably incorrect everywhere else as well as here an you can actually get it back out by pulling the bottom of the dash apart and pushing from behind with the help of a screwdriver in front. double word score: If you use this kit with the Sony XAV-AX100, it interferes with the volume knob function and for no apparent good reason. this is a stupi
Pros: it's free
Cons: literally everything else

I did not use this kit, as I was very careful when I cut the additional material from my dash to remove only enough to allow my radio to snugly fit. I have a 1999 F250 and the instructions which come with this kit advise that if you chose to use this, you will need to remove the dash to access your radio... I thus came to the conclusion - this kit makes the radio impossible to remove. My experience with Murphy's Law is that Murphy is an optimist, so I knew as soon as I locked my new stereo in my dash, I would for some reason need to remove it. Without this kit my installation looks good (not great). I the installer know that it could be better, but I doubt that anyone else will ever notice.

Easy enough to work with, and pretty essential for certain applications. With that said, for best results, you're going to want to know your way around the inside of the dash and some tools for cutting, drilling, or otherwise modifying the kit to fit certain applications. not a knock on these brackets, but at the price and considering the not infrequent need for further modifications, it'd be nice to have a metal bracket.

Junk
Josh from York, PA on 9/24/2017
2000 Ford Excursion
I was given this product when I purchased my Kenwood DDX374BT. This product was complete trash. Not only did it I have to modify this kit for it to fit (I had to remove about 1/16" worth of material from both side pieces), the piece they give you to go below the unit to cover the gap would not fit under due to the stock radio support... I had to put it on top where it also did not span from corner to corner leaving an unfinished gap on either side. Lastly, after mounting side brackets as far forward on the radio as i could, it still sticks out enough to where you can see the side of the radio. I am completely dissatisfied with this product and will be searching for another choice.
Pros:
Cons: Junk design, does not fit 2000 Ford Excursion Limited without modification to side pieces, does not make for a clean install.

This dash kit had a lot of slotted holes that didn't quite line up to my new radio. Also, because there was very little plastic material between holes, it made for what I'll call a fragile installation at best. I realize that it's difficult to design a product like this to fit a wide variety of radios but this one fell way short of the mark in my book.

Worked fine for my install, but I wish there were more depth options. My stereo is inset quite a bit - I'd prefer it to be closer to flush with the stock radio bezel. There is no option here, as long as you want a secure install. That being said, it fits cleanly in the bezel and looks fine. No problems getting it installed, aside from the meticulous cutting of the Ford bezel (Dremel multi-max with the wood/drywall blade actually worked AWESOME for this), but that's got nothing to do with this kit.

To start off this is a three piece kit. That's it. The instructions are of no use. Totally unusable. There is not a precise way to insure depth positioning. I use my factory radio as a guide and took many measurements. Then inserted the radio in to the cavity. And prayed. Because once installed you can not get the radio back out without dash removal. The reason I gave it three stars instead of 1 is because it looked good installed and the depth was perfect.
Pros: -Do not have to remove dash to install -Free
Cons: -Instructions (had to call tec support) -No depth guide

2001 Ford Escape. removed the factory double DIN radio, installed a Kenwood double DIN receiver. The dash kit worked fine although I have yet to fully snap the receiver into the dash. This is because of the big warnings about not being able to remove the unit once snapped into the dash. It also will slightly recess the reveiver from the dash front. Both of these things an issue with me. Very difficult to believe it can't be mounted better. Everything seems to fit well and it appears to hold the receiver securely.
Pros: holds securely
Cons: not removable once snapped into place recessed the receiver a little bit.

Inadequate...
Mark from Palmdale, CA on 5/26/2016
2005 Ford Escape
I suppose with just the right head unit this would be a nifty little product. As others have noted, it sets the face of the head unit way too far back and in my case renders the volume knob almost useless. The plastic is very soft and is easily distorted when inserting screws. I dared not utilize it after all the short comings became obvious. I opted for a different mount, which I am not thrilled with, but it's head and shoulders above this item.
Pros: Simple in design, might work well with the right head unit.
Cons: Does not work well with Blaupunkt Cape Town 940. Need to remove step and make it a flush mount on the sides. Step really reduces it's usefulness. Hardly any slots line up on center top to bottom. Glad it was free...

BK from Chico, CA on 5/2/2016

Build quality of plastic is decent but installation in an early super duty doesn't look that great in my opinion. This kit sets the radio way back in the dash to the point that you can't really use the volume knob. I ended up going to a local retail store and getting a different Metra kit for an 01 F-150. A little work with the rotary tool and it came out very nice. I almost scrapped the whole aftermarket stereo idea due to how terrible it looked. A buddy of mine has the same truck and dash kit. He is going to change his with the 01 F-150 style now that he's seen mine.

2005 ford escape dash install
Steve from napa, CA on 2/16/2016

The directions are a joke. Once I figured out which way the brackets need to go, with help from a Crutchfield Tech, I began attaching it to my Jensen VX7020. There are several mounting holes. The directions say to use 4 screws on each side. There is no configuration where 4 screws can be used. It is soft plastic so you can't screw them in very far to hold your unit in place. Once I managed to get 3 screws on each side, only 2 actually lined up with holes, the third was an angle fit, I tried to push it in. The unit will not go all the way in and snap into place. the way I have the side brackets they are somewhat flush with the receiver so that I can access the control knob and usb port. After reading some other reviews apparently the brackets are supposed to protrude farther out then the receiver face. That would probably give them the flexibility they need slide in and snap in place. However I then would not be able to access the control knob on the left easily and opening the little usb door is difficult. Right now the receiver is almost all the way in and doesn't look bad but it is not flush with the dash. I am not happy with this kit and will have to find something else. After considerable grinding away of my dash on the top and bottom it is upsetting to find I can't use the recommended mounting kit from Crutchfield.
Pros: Free
Cons: See review

Metra 95-5817 Dash Kit
David from Strafford, Missouri on 1/3/2016
2003 Ford F-350
The dash kit worked and looks nice after the installation. However, I am disappointed that the kit mounts the radio so far into the dash. I bought a Kenwood Exelon stereo to use with this kit and it has one knob on the left hand side. It is difficult to operate the knob with the radio located so close to the side and recessed in. I wish Metra made if differently or at least made the mounting depth adjustable. This kit makes it impossible to remove the radio after installation. It is a little scary knowing that the radio cannot be removed after installation so you better make sure it works and is wired correctly before you push it into the dash the final few inches. If you are not going to hook up all the features (like the back up camera or the phone mic) you better connect wires and route to an accessible location as you can't get back to the rear of the radio without removing your dash when using this kit.
Pros: Looks nice and very secure.
Cons: Mounts the radio too deep in the dash making it difficult to turn some of the knobs. Not possible to remove after installation

Trim kit used in 04 F250. Fits well, nice taper on the trim pieces, and snaps into the dash snug and holds receiver in place. Only complaint is that there is not a filler piece for the top of the receiver. It comes with a bottom filler, but would look even cleaner with a proper install if there was a top piece as well.
Pros: Factory finish, nice look, holds secure
Cons: Would be better with top filler strip

Required for an F250
pwhill from Ponder, TX on 1/2/2016
2003 Ford F-250 Super Duty
Overall the kit does exactly as advertised. The small piece that is supposed to fill the gap below the new head unit isn't well designed for the application, but if you pay attention to the work you're doing when you cut away the factory bezel plastic, you won't need this piece. It would be nice if the ABS matched the factory bezel color, but that's not a show stopper. If you're hung up on cosmetics you won't like the way any aftermarket unit looks anyway.
Pros: Simple installation Snug fit after installation
Cons: Requires removal of entire dash bezel after install, rather than providing key holes to release the locking tabs

3 stars. While this install kit 'fit' my 2004 Ranger and the Sony double din replacement radio, the radius at the bottom of the pieces did not precisely match the radius of the opening in the bezel and it marred the finish of the bezel when pressed into place. The damage cannot be repaired without replacement of the bezel.

Cons: Not a perfect fit in 2004 Ranger dash bezel.

Plastic That Covers Plastic
The Golden Pickle from Pennsylvania on 10/24/2015
2003 Ford Ranger
It's plastic that dresses up your dash and helps fill out the empty holes. It's much better than the thing of plastic Jensen packaged with the headunit. To do the double-din install on a 2003 Ford Ranger you have to remove the top and bottom sections of the factory plastic trim for the headunit to fit. Then I realized I had to take out some on the left and right sides as well. I tried my best to keep it pretty, but it was looking pretty haggard. This trim kit did a nice job hiding all of that crappy cutting.
Pros: Hides the holes along the left, right and bottom sides of the headunit. Cheap plastic to match the cheap plastic interior of a 2003 Ford Ranger.
Cons: Since it was cheap, the machine screws couldn't really be tightened because of how flimsy the plastic brackets were. If you remove too much of the factory trim on the left and right sides, the dash kit won't be able to hold the headunit in place and the headunit will pull out/fall out. I had to rig up some MacGyver skills to get it back to being tight.

does the job
Over40 from Southern MS on 7/29/2015
2007 Ford Ranger
Easy to use and does the job. Unfortunately, there is no depth adjustment and any error in your dash trimming is apparent after installation. I ended up replacing it with an AI FMK552 install kit, which gives you depth adjustment as well as a tight 360 degree surround. My head unit is now nearly flush mounted, (the Metra kit had it recessed nearly an inch) and there is no evidence of any kind of dash modification. The install looks basically stock. Sorry, Crutchfield, but the Metra kit doesn't do the job.
Pros: Quick, easy, and does the job.
Cons: No depth adjustment, and the surround does not quite hide the dash modification required. Head unit installs too far back in the opening and looks like an aftermarket installation.

Don't know how hard i have to push in order for it to lock. Don't like the fact that once the radio is locked in there is no removing without taking whole dash out. How do you change the fuse? Guess I'm not too worried since the radio is new and uncertain. Actually wasn't sure whether to give a two star. Appears to be no other choice for radio mounting. Wish better.

Makes a double-DIN fit, but....
Don from Illinois on 6/21/2015
2005 Ford Escape
Rather disappointed in the overall result in my '05 Escape. Double DIN looks to fit, but doesn't really. I dremel'd the top and bottom of the opening as instructed, but the radio would not fit, with this adapter installed, without serious modification to the sides of the opening, and to the kit itself. Holes pre-drilled did not line up with (Kenwood) holes in radio, so I had to re-drill the adapter, then grind it down as it still would not fit with the widened opening in the dash. Still, it doesn't flush-mount in the dash, and the radio sticks out a bit further than that. In hindsight, I wouldn't do a double-DIN in this car, the opening is not sufficient size.
Pros: Creates an attachment point for a car that's really not meant for this size radio.
Cons: Requires extensive...EXTENSIVE...modification to fit a Ford opening.

I used this to install a double din stereo in my 2005 Ford Escape. The stereo fit after all the appropriate modifications, but not after I put this mounting kit on. I had to file down the sides of the opening too, thanks to this thing. It did NOT come with the bottom piece like it show in the picture. I now have gaps at the top and bottom of my stereo opening, so I guess I'm going to buy some weather stripping or something to cover them. I will say, where this kit is (on the sides) looks very nice, but I feel like it should have been an all around one, and not just the sides.
Pros: Looks nice where it is.
Cons: Doesn't cover the top or bottom. Missing bottom piece shown in pictures. Makes stereo too wide to fit in most double din openings.
