Great kit that worked well. My only issue was that it was difficult to see in the instructions which front trim plate went with which car (Subaru, Mitsubishi, etc). In the end I just picked one and I think I got it right, but labels on the front trim would have helped.

Face clipped in nicely. One of the screw holes started stripping itself but I quit torqin the stew to keep it tight. Looks nice, doesn't line up perfectly with the faceplate, but that could be my radio as this is the third car it's been in
Pros: Fit my car well (they always do) Looks and feels like at least OEM quality Face plate snapped in firmly, no jiggle
Cons: Doesnt like up perfectly with my radio faceplate (could be the radios fault, it's not new and the faceplate can be jiggled by hand) One of the screw holes started stripping itself as I was tightening the pocket to the radio bracket. It was in deep enough that I just left it and it was still tight. Theres probably a hairs breadth left before the screw bottoms out like it's supposed to. Oh well, it's a minor complaint, the other 5 should hold it in place just fine

Plastic feels cheap. Instructions not very clear- illustrations are washed out which made it hard to assemble. If the wrong bezel is chosen and attached- and needs to be removed- then the cheap plastic tabs will break off upon removal. The 'one size fits all' Bezel for Subaru is flat across the front. The Subaru dash panel has a slight curve to it- not an exact fit. I wouldn't mind paying more $$ for better quality.

Excellent! But slim and some holes in back
Crutchfield customer from Great Falls, VA on 8/20/2018
2007 Subaru Impreza 2.5i
Good fit for my subaru impreza, but the actual width is narrower than some DIN pockets available that would have fit my car. Also, this has 4 small rectangular holes in the back, which i covered with some black tape. I did use one hole to run a microphone connection out of. It has tons of compatibility via different pieces - see their picture. I personally would've rather a kit that doesn't have so many adapter pieces and only fits my subaru impreza with kenwood stereo.
Pros: Extra space / storage. Compatibility
Cons: Holes in back of pocket, multiple pieces makes a little harder install

It fills in the hole left going from the factory double din to an aftermarket single din head unit perfectly. The only complaint is that anything you put in there will fly out unless you put some kind of nonslip pad in it. I used a piece of a tool box liner in mine and it eliminated the issue.

Decent looking piece of Junk
Christopher from Healdsburg, CA on 12/17/2017

The idea is good and it fits well, mostly solid for the price and looks decent, but... As mentioned in many reviews it is ruined by it's Achilles' Heel: The little tabs that hold the faceplate to the pocket, and which the whole design relies upon, are crap. They are tiny little pieces of plastic that if you actually manage to get the faceplate assembled with out breaking the tabs (which I did not) will probably fail soon. I don't recommend it at all!

Henry from Rockford, IL on 3/18/2017
2004 Volkswagen Jetta
This kit came as part of a very complete installation kit for my Jetta. Everything went together well and looked good in the car. The only negative is that this is the second replacement order for the 'pocket' due to the tabs on the faceplate breaking over time. (The 4 tabs are the only thing holding the faceplate to the pocket.) The first faceplate lasted about a year, the second about 4 years. All-in-all, I've been very pleased.
Pros: Fit well, looks good in the car
Cons: Tabs are a bit fragile and will fail over time due vibration and/or excessive load/treatment.

David D. from jacksonville, FL on 2/18/2016

Take your time and Call if you have Any questions. The plastic is a one-time, take it slow....or you're calling for a replacement. Overall, it's nice to have some storage options where I had Very limited prior.
Pros: Easy install for some storage when going from 2x DIN to single. Lots of options
Cons: Not everything was spelled in the instructions, nor made sense. I needed to call to verify if the pocket for my '03 Jetta was 'keyed' or not (there is no 'upside-down' for me) and the 'fins/lip' on the pocket trim (they go against the head-unit itself...so I Could have put it on incorrectly). 1st face-plate, the tabs broke-off; very flimsy/weak/brittle plastic. Would be nicer if they were tabs and thicker. it's a one-try/better-get-it-right-1st-time

Part of a kit, a piece broke easily, perhaps unnecessary
Tom from Fairfax, VA on 2/3/2016
2004 Volkswagen Jetta
I received this as part of a "kit" of parts to install my new radio. I was going from a double din to single din radio, so arguably there would be a hole to fill. In my case, however, I soon plan to have something else to fill the gap leaving me without a great need for this piece. Sadly, it was cheaper to order the "kit" including this piece than it would have been to only order the wiring harness and antenna adapter that I needed. All that being said, I did end up installing it, even if for only a week. This is made to fit multiple vehicles and as a result comes with 3 different trim pieces to go on its face. The entire thing seems to be made of ABS plastic, a plastic which is known for being hard, but a bit brittle. Not flexible, in other words. Why is this important? The trip that goes on the front has four little legs that "snap" into the larger piece. One of these legs broke off while I was snapping the face on. I feel like I was careful and lined everything up nice and square. The instructions presume, in a VW, that you will mount this pocket below the radio. In my case, I needed to mount it above the radio. This is possible, but doing so results in you putting this in "upside down" according to the instructions. The instructions don't indicate that installing it this way is even possible.
Pros: Easy to install
Cons: Presumes you're going to install it below the radio, but you can install it above

Good Product
bbuzzes from New York on 1/12/2016
2001 Subaru Forester
It was easy to pick the dash kit for my 2001 Subara Forester using Crutchfield's website. Product came quickly and was easy to install.
Pros:
Cons: The kit included trim for several makes of vehicle and instructions to tell you which trim plate belongs with each vehicle. But the photos in the instructions were not detailed enough to distinguish which trim was which. It would be better if the trims had some identifying match or the drawings in the instructions were better. But it doesn't take much trial and error to pick one out of 3 so this is not a serious problem.

amamar from Colorado on 6/11/2015

This is very poor quality. The little plastic hooks that connect the faceplate to the tray break easily. Crutchfield was great about replacing the first kit. I ended up practicing the attachment with the faceplates that I didn't need, which really helped I found that if you put the faceplate down on a flat surface and press the tray straight down onto it, you have a decent chance of it working. If it gets crooked at all, you'll probably break some of the hooks.

Not actually needed for my 2005 Subaru Forester install, but seems like an okay product. The face trim on my head unit did not fit with the dash trim in place, and the stock pocket fits better without the face trim. When assembling, be careful how much torque you put on the screws. Metal captive nuts might be a nice improvement.

2001 Subaru Legacy
I got this kit for a 2001 Subaru Legacy GT Wagon. I ended up not using any part of it, the tray was not correct for the mounting plate from my factory stereo so I had to use my old tray. There were various adapters but it absolutely just did not match. I had to use my old dingy tray, which was a little disappointing. However that being said I'm actually kind of glad as the new tray had holes in the back of it and anything remotely small you put in it could end up inside the dashboard.

poor quality
Rabbit from Florida on 3/17/2015
2002 Subaru Impreza WRX
I found this product to be poorly made, and many of the parts were either unnecessary or confusing. The instructions told me to snap the Subaru plate onto the pocket, however I found that I could not put my original face plate back on with this plate on the front. it was next to impossible to remove without uninstalling the entire stereo. Bolts were too short to sufficiently hold the bracket adapters on, and if you over-tighten (which doesn't take much effort) you either strip the plastic or crack it entirely. Lastly, I mounted the correct right-hand adapter to the right hand side of the pocket, and found it wouldn't work as instructed. I actually needed to put the left-hand adapter on the right-hand side, after lining up the original bracket with my OEM stereo and noting the bolt pattern. I realize there are no one-size-fits-all-cars instructions, but maybe it would be better not to include any, rather than confuse people.

Installing in a 1998 Subaru Legacy required some slight trimming of the top and side of trim ring to fit flush with JVC Arsenal KD-AR865BTS CD Receiver. Quick rotary tool work and the results were good.
Pros: Solid mount, expect it to hold up well.
Cons: Might require trimming to fit to CD receiver.

2005 Volkswagen Jetta
Some people have complained that it's impossible to install this without breaking at least one of the tabs. I used the VW Jetta tabs and had no problem with the install. Nothing broke. It looks factory except for the fact that it isn't 100% perfectly in line with the opening. One end sticks out more than the other by maybe 1 or 2 mm. It's only noticeable if you're looking for flaws. Removing this will likely involve breaking one of the tabs, though. That's one happened to me. Re-installing it went okay and it still fits securely even with one of the tabs missing. It's weird that it has four holes in the back but when I had to remove the "shelf," those holes in the back gave me a way to grab hold of it. Just remember not to put tiny things in there or they might fall through the holes. Or cover them with black tape.

It's a bit on the flimsy side. Quite a few tabs broke while snapping parts together and placing unit in dash to cover the opening left by the removal of the double DIN unit and replacing it with a single DIN
Pros: Turns empty dash real-estate into extra storage. Very handy for placing your phone/player while hooked to head unit. Gives a very clean built-in look.
Cons: Flimsy. Difficult to assemble without breaking some of the retaining tabs. This might be avoided if instructions were re-written with a few warnings and somewhat clearer steps.

Dash Kit for 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
Marc M from Manchester, NH on 1/22/2014
The kit worked, but it was not quite the primo fit I had hoped for. I had to cut out a support for the factory radio at the back of the dash cavity, which was difficult. I snapped a couple of plastic parts on the dash kit when installing as they are very brittle plastic - you need to be very gentle and make sure things are well lined-up. Overall, the radio is in and looks pretty good, so no drastic complaints.
Pros: Price for the kit was very reasonable
Cons: Quality of kit parts is reflected in price

Versatile. Nothing wrong with it a Dremel can't fix
RichF from Saint Paul, MN on 1/19/2014
1999 Volkswagen Golf
I have a 1999.5 Golf that came to me with Premium 4 Stereo and a CD Deck. - each a single DIN Device. Crutchfield assumes that if you have a MkIV VW, you have the double DIN Monsoon radio. So when I finally tracked this part down, the web site told me "does not fit." I ordered it anyway, based on my own research. My car was precisely the application it was designed for and the supplied instructions from Metra demonstrated that. That said, I did not like the design of the part. It wanted me to remove the divider that VW uses to split the double-din bay into to single-din bays, It had a flange that would lock into the groove doing that would leave. A fine design, but I had already installed my single-din stereo, and it's cage was clipped to VW's divider, so I dremeled the flange off the VW Face plate supplied by Metra, and it fit perfectly.
Pros: At $11.99 , this is the best price you will find. Most of the major auto parts retailers want 19.99 - 22.99 for it, and generally need to special order it. With Crutchfield's free shipping, you will pay less and have it nearly as quickly.
Cons: Once you install it, you cannot expect to remove it intact. A better design would have allowed removal with VW's radio removal tool.

Does a good job filling the hole in the dash if you're replacing a double-DIN factory unit with a DIN aftermarket. Small 3/8" holes in the back could allow things to fall thru if you're not careful.

vedo4ave from Atlanta, GA on 11/2/2011
1999 Saab 9-5
The opening created by removing the factory radio is to wide for a typical aftermarket radio and pocket accessory. Also, you will still need to keep the factory radio bracket to fit the new radio, but will need to make some modifications to the back of the bracket(cut out back) and drill holes on sides to mount new radio. I did all this with a simple Dremel tool. You will also need to get a trim plate to cover the rest of the opening around the radio/pocket assembly since width is different from factory trim. Radio WILL fit in bracket, the trim around the factory radio is just wider than the aftermarket radio, so a plate will need to be made to ensure a clean looking install.
Pros:
Cons: This item does not fit the 1999 SABB 9-5. Multiple modifications required to fit product.

Has holes in the back and CD "shelves"
Jeremy from Eastern CT on 3/7/2011
2002 Volkswagen Jetta
I'm very dissapointed in this kit for several reasons: - it has holes in the back, so any small item you would want to store in it could fall into your dash. - it has CD shelves. These take up usable room for things like an MP3 player or phone. - It does not appear possible to remove the pocket w/o damaging or breaking it. If I need to access that part of the car for a repair or future upgrade, I will probably have to buy another kit. Only one good thing about it is that it installed easy and looks good. But it wasn't what I was hoping for in terms of functionality.

Works, but lots of room for improvement.
. from Phoenix, AZ on 2/26/2011
1997 Subaru Legacy Outback
Metra brand universal dash pocket was shipped as a set with Mitsubishi, Subaru, and Wolkswagen adapters. If I would not receive it as free installation gear from Cruitchfield, I would have returned it. In the end it works, but definitely looks and feels as a low grade aftermarket. The visible edges of Subaru adapter (which I used) are not straight and appeared to be visibly buckled toward inside of the pocket. Also there are approximately 1 inch wide CD case shelves on both sides inside the pocket. Intended for 3 CD cases only one CD case fits resulting in poor usability, and significant waste of space due to excessive width of the shelves. Installation instructions were straight forward and easy to follow, but 6 flat head screws appeared to be too short to reliably hold the attachment brackets.

I'm stunned to see ratings less than 5 stars! What were you expecting for this price? I installed this in a 99 Jetta. It was a perfect fit and installed in less than 5 minutes. Although reviews are generally positive, there are plenty of mixed reviews on this dash pocket, but I ended up buying it anyway using the logic that if it broke, it was only a few bucks wasted. I installed it on my 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback, and it fit perfectly. Installation was very simple and straight forward. Easy to install, should include removal instructions. Wasn't clear whether it was to go above or below new radio - could do either it seemed. Ended up below. Kind of cheap but functional, agree that the CD shelves are wasted, could use the unimpeded room for storage. Does the job, though.

this component doesnt work as well as it should . the screws in the side does not hold and it comes out right away the plastic holder that snaps breaks easily. i would rather have bought the stock one from the dealer at least it pits perfectly

It does the job but is cheap.

I am about to order my third one. The tabs that hold the face onto the body fail and it rattles. Additionally, the pocket has tabs in it that are supposed to act as a CD shelf. I think this is an outdated idea and the tabs make it so that a wallet or larger item won't fit. I'm not sure many people carry CD's in their cases any more or if the CD case would stay in the shelf under acceleration. If there were a different product available I would buy it.

Easy to install and modify for access to USB cable running to back of stereo. Might want to include removal instructions for first timers like me that need to tuck wires from the stereo---THEN---install pocket :).

I got this with the stereo I bought for my Subaru Impreza. First of all I will say that the item is not needed and should probably not be used. The new stereo swapped easily into the place of the old one and the stock bracket and shelf are a much higher quality. It seems that these days many cars and aftermarket head units are designed on a standard and there is no need for this item in the Subaru.

double din pocket
tmcvermont from Castleton Vt. on 3/17/2009
this item is ok and filled the space when installing my single din into the double din space. However, this is not the quality I have come to expect from Crutchfield. The instructions are a bit spotty and having to adjust the position of the unit within the dash I had to loosen the screws and when retightened the threads strip. It works but is somewhat disappointing.

Only thing good about this item: it was free
VK from Albuquerque on 3/3/2009
The install went relatively smoothly. However, the pocket itself had a face already attached to it that didn't match my car, so it had to be removed. But in so doing, one of the plastic hooks snapped -- this is very cheap plastic. Yes, I was able to get the new face on and it looks fine, but there is a little gap that I can notice. I would have exchanged it but I already had my old stereo out and my new stereo ready to go. I really didn't need the hassle of waiting for a replacement. When installed, the item looked fine. But, if this item didn't come with my install package, I definitely would have went with something more sturdy.

This came with my purchased radio, and works as advertised. It does fill the space left by removing the OEM radio and substituting my purchased HD. The brackets and screws work as advertised, although they are plastic and as such, the installer must be careful to put them in right the first time (with plastic, there's no second chance!). The storage space is nice, too.

Great addition

I was skeptical about this pocket after reading others reviews. But pleasantly suprised at the ease of installation and appearance. I had no issues with installing this in my 97 subaru legacy, and it looks great, and sturdy as well. directions were not that great, but worked. thanks

Isn't high quality, but is fine once installed
John from Northeast on 2/2/2009

I had zero problems with this. I thought it looked a little cheap, but once installed, it is no worse or better than the other OEM material. We live in a "make it cheaply" world, folks. The installation is a bit odd. In a 2003 VW, you need to make sure the prongs on the faceplate are on the TOP so it will fit into a notch in the dash. NOWHERE does it say this in the instructions. I got lucky on my first try.

Not awesome, but FREE
Adam from Little Rock, AT on 1/27/2009
This went into a 2004 GTI. I don't really like the slots for holding CDs. I don't really carry CDs anymore, so it makes the pocket smaller than it actually is when it comes to holding other items. What bothers me more, is that this does not match the finish in my dash. The supplied dash pocket has a texture to it, although the rest of the black plastic in my interior is perfectly smooth. Neither are a big deal though. The texture on the dash pocket isn't really noticeable anyway, as it is placed below the new headunit I purchased. But hey, 4 stars for being FREE! Thanks Crutchfield, you guys rock!
