Metra 99-7509 Dash Kit

Nik from Seattle, WA on 7/29/2019

2008 Mazda 5

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Didn't come with any clips to hold it in the dash. I used the ones from the old kit, but if they'd broken on removal, or I didn't notice they were there, it would've been pretty bad news. Also, i had to cut out the center support structure to make the head unit fit. Dunno if that's standard, but it wasn't perforated or anything, and it feels a little unsettling compromising the structure like that. Finish is nice enough. The clips and the center piece were easy enough to solve, but it begs the question of "is this kit complete?" Also, the mounting screws were borderline too short.. also no instructions on how to install! Not even the downloadable ones Crutchfield sent included this process. Bumping the review down to 2 stars after writing this. I am however satisfied with the look of the result, and truthfully, it wasn't that hard, but I've also done stuff like this before. IKEA it is not.

Pros: Looks decent

Cons: No instructions, skimpy on the pieces to the point of almost being incomplete (see full review).

This is a beautiful piece...fits and looks like a stock assembly line feature!

Pros: Works with single or double din radios and looks great!

Cons: Transfering those little snap-on clips from the old faceplate to the new one can be a little finiky...but still not a big deal.

Ugly. The only choice

It dies match the vehicle... in size. But it's ugly. UGLY! The clips are not provided, so you have to harvest then from your old radio face plate. Not a big deal. No screws for the radio. For a double DIN unit, you have to cut plastic. The original face plate in the car is mostly glossy black with shiny silver lines on the outside. This thing is painted a mate silver. It dies not match the vehicle. Definitely after market look.

Pros: It fits

Cons: Ugly No screws

Damaged faceplate from Metra

Crutchfield customer from Vista, CA on 8/30/2018

2008 Mazda 5

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This review has nothing to do with Crutchfield. They did an excellent job and stood behind their word. That being said. It took 3 kits to finally get one that was NOT damaged. When the first kit arrived, I noticed some slight imperfections on the faceplate. I asked Crutchfield if they would replace it. They gladly agreed. Unfortunately, I had to make some inconvenient schedule rearrangements while I waited for the replacement (3 days). When the second kit arrived it had even more damage and scratches to the face plate. Oddly enough it was roughly in the same place as the first one. I am guessing that the manufacturing or packaging part of the process from Metra needs better quality control. I contacted Crutchfield again and explained that now I was on a tight schedule to install my radio and that it would greatly help if they over-nighted the 3rd kit. They agreed. I was able to complete the radio installation a day later after the new, 3rd faceplate arrived. Thanks for the outstanding work from Crutchfield.

Pros: Crutchfield customer service is outstanding. Wouldn't go anywhere else.

Cons: Terrible quality control on Metras behalf.

The color was off and not in a positive way. Still acceptable. Clips necessary to hold the dash kit and radio were absent although I was able to cannibalize that which I had removed and almost had an acceptable locking fit. Still vulnerable and I rely on being able to remove the face-plate of the unit for security. More instructions warning of these problems could have prepared me better.

Fitment was great and very good color match to the stock gray trim. The instructions were pretty clear except for the minor detail that the white retaining clips need to be removed from the stock trim radio surround and installed onto the new surround so it clips back into the factory location. It's very simple to transfer the clips with a small flat head screwdriver and a gentle touch. But without the clips the surround will not fit flush and clean. Other than that minor detail great product.

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

With today's cars having the headunit and its controls integrated into the dash, the days of simple installations are mostly over. The last car I did was either a 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback or a 93 Ford Aerostar. Simple, especially the Ford. I was hesitant to upgrade the Mazda, but this kit made it work. It feels rather flimsy and the color doesn't match the factory in the least in my 2008 5 Grand Touring. And don't break the center bracket too close to the sides if you're installing a double DIN unit. The bracket clips to the "L" shaped part left after you cut the center bracket to stabilize it. But, like the rest of the Mazda interior, once everything is together and tight, it's pretty solid. If you have the time, you'd could paint this piece, but you won't get the "piano black-ish" color Mazda used from the factory. I didn't paint, but I went to the parts store and bought some carbon fiber style tape just to break up the silver a bit. Also, again, the instructions say nothing about removing the 5 white clips from the factory unit and placing them on this kit. It won't be secure if you don't do it, so make sure you do.

Pros: Keeps dash looking stock (mostly) Simple installation

Cons: Does not match factory interior dash color even remotely Instructions not clear on how much of center bracket should be removed for double DIN install. The instructions also say nothing about removing the white clips from the factory piece and putting them on the Metra kit.

Mazda5 Center Console Replacememt

Eric from Churchville, PA on 11/21/2016

2008 Mazda 5

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

In the process of updating my wife's Mazda 5 stereo system from the factory radio, to a double-din unit, the obvious replacement of the center console to support the new head unit was necessary. This Metra unit proved quite a perfect fit both for the unit as well as the stock appearance for the center console. With the exception of my own oversight of transferring the clips from the stock center console to the new Metra, it went without a hitch and provided a stock-appearing and stable mount for her new system. I've already gone so far as to recommend this to another Mazda owner who has concerns about their center console given the non-standard configuration of the factory unit.

Pros: Fit and finish, overall appearance.

Cons: Color was not an exact match for the interior, but ultimately looked as if it came from Mazda nonetheless.

Dash Kit Review

David J from Tulsa, OK on 6/9/2016

2006 Mazda 5

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Purchased for my '06 Mazda 5. Worked like a charm. Other reviews state that it doesn't match perfectly color wise, but I barely see any difference. One drawback is that, though it has screws on the bottom part to fasten it to the dash, there's nothing to secure it along the top edge--no screw holes or tabs that snap it into place--so it's not really secure all the way around. I don't suppose this will be an issue since I'm not going to be pulling on the unit for any reason. Other reviewers mentioned a small gap vs. the original equipment, but I don't see this. Then again, that could be my Mazda model year.

Pros: Easy to install Fits well

Cons: Doesn't secure at the top.

As noted by others, you have to use the white clips from your original trim piece. And while the color (mostly the sheen- or lack thereof) is wrong, I'm a grateful as it forced me to paint it and the sifter trim piece to match- and now they both look far better than stock.

Pros: Fits well.

Cons: Color and sheen doesn't match stock.

It looks like a slightly more matte silver finish. It wasn't exactly the silver color of the plastic but it was close enough and looks just fine. Word of advice: MAKE SURE TO GET THE WHITE PIECES FROM YOUR OLD DASH KIT TO PUT ON THIS ONE. These are the little pieces where it clips in. If you don't remove them from stock and put them on the this one it won't pop in right.

Pros: Works well

Cons: Not exactly the same color as stock but I think it looks great.

Easy to use, nice that it is included in the bundles. Silver color is a little lighter, so not an exact match, and it seems odd that to install a Double-DIN you just cut out the Single-DIN crosspiece with scissors. Otherwise, great!

Metra 99-7509 Dash Kit

SteveM from Ottawa Canada on 10/29/2014

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Here's the trick to make it fit properly. The dash kit does not come with the plastic clips to make it *snap* into your dash. It will fit but it will be all loosey-goosey. You need to pry the white clips off your Mazda's original trim piece and put them on this Metra one. Then it snaps into place and everything fits much better. You'll see people complaining about poorly it fits around the AC unit. True, it doesn't fit great, but once you use the snap trick above, it fits 100x better.

Pros: Looks good. Great price.

Cons: Not as sturdy feeling as I'd like. Double-din operation seems a bit flimsy. (Though I didn't have any problems with it.) If you don't know the clip trick (see review) it will seem like it doesn't fit well at all.

This piece is about the only way to install a stereo and it look clean without doing custom fabrication. Install was easy enough and its nice to have the option to fit either a single or double din. It is a fairly inexpensive solution. I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to my vehicles, but it's my wife's car and she loves her new set up. So I'll give this 3 stars.

Pros: Easy install. Fits a double din or a single din with a shelf.

Cons: Fitment wasn't perfect. There are small gaps around each of the a/c controls. The only other thing that bothered me was that I had to take the fastening clips off of the original stereo and install them on the new piece in order to secure it. One would think that a dash "kit" would have come with everything including clips. Plastic is not the same quality as stock.

Disappointing

The fit and finish of the Metra dash kit for the 2008 Mazda 5 is disappointing to say the least. The color does not match the factory dash trim (kit is a matte silver, the factory dash stuff has more of a charcoal look). Color aside, the fit is horrible. The gaps at the bottom of the HVAC knobs are large enough to see through. I took it apart and reinstalled it to verify my install, but with no improvement. I called Crutchfield to ask if they carry any options, but they don't. I will be buying a Scosche MA1538B to see if it is any better. Wish me luck! PS. The Metra design has large radiused edges around the opening for the stereo. You won't find a similar radius anywhere inside a 2008 Mazda 5. What is that about?

Pros: It came free from Crutchfield when I ordered the Stereo for my wife's car

Cons: It wasn't worth the price... And it was free!

I have to respectfully disagree with my fellow reviewers. The finish on this item is actually more durable than the original. I wasn't planning on complaining too much after reading the reviews because it's free. However, when I received it, I immediately tested the finish. It has an almost tacky rubberized feel. I find it better than the OEM piece. I tested the scratch worthiness in a discrete place with my fingernail and no problem. Then I tested the face and same result. Seems excellent to me. Now the install is fine as well. Just remember to save the white clips.

Pros: Finish and it's Free!!!

Paint Finish Could be Better

Old School from Seattle, WA on 2/27/2012

2007 Mazda 5

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Not much to add as others have covered most bases. Will emphasis the clips must be transferred, and the paint finish is almost a matte finish, pron to scratching, and not a hard shine like oem. I would almost say to repaint it with a quality paint or clearcoat it. Must make sure to place all wiring so that there is no outward pressure, since the top of the panel is held in by the weak clips (that you transferred)

Pros: Good fit in our 2007 "5" Fairly accurate color match. Handles weight of our single DIN radio just fine without rear support.

Cons: Lighter weight, and not reinforced like oem. Filler storage tray was a loose snap in, and not tight. Paint finish was softer than oem.

The price for the stereo was great, including this kit (faceplate, harness and instructions)made it even better. Sure, you can buy it separately and look up all the info in the blogs etc . . ., this put everything you need right in front of you right now. I am satisfied with the product. All that being said, the finish could be a little more durable. The paint is soft and I fear that it will get worn on the edges or gouged when I take it to a car wash.

Pros: A great value.

Cons: Paint finish could be better (more durable).

Well, this unit is the only one I could find anywhere, so it does the job, but the fit was less than perfect, and the color does not match the car perfectly. You can easily tell that it is an aftermarket product and a cheap one at that. BUT for now, it is better than the stock unit, as the stock stereo was terrible, so I dont mind the sacrifice of the look ... for now. I just wish a company out there would make a proper kit that looks and feels like it belongs in this car. Also the instructions were wrong for my 2008 Mazda 5. The design and instructions were obviously meant for a 2006/07 model. The instructions left out several screws and bolts that needed to be removed for instal, making the task rather frustrating until I found the extra screws. Its all that exists, so I like it, but just wish there was a better solution.

Pros: It Exists

Cons: Cheap Finish, Wrong Color Match, imperfect fit, gaps between stereo and junk tray

This was very easy to install. Plus, once it's installed it does look just like the picture, which looks just like the factory piece. I used it to install a single-DIN receiver, and I like that it has the pocket included. Since it was a single-DIN, I didn't have to modify it, so I would guess it would be more of a pain if you have a double-DIN. Here's what I don't like: It is much thinner plastic than the factory piece, and it is clearly cheaply made. Because of that, it flexes a bit and doesn't fit all that well, specifically around the HVAC controls below the radio. This kit, like the factory one, is held in by two tabs at the top and two screws at the bottom. The tabs at the top don't fit snugly enough into the slots, so mine vibrates and rattles. VERY annoying. I am going to have to pull it back out and make some shims to stop it from doing that. Also, that pocket that I do like has pre-drilled holes in the back of it, so you see the holes very obviously from any seat in the car. One other thing: the radio and the pocket don't fit perfectly in it. The radio doesn't move, but you can see some of the cutouts in the kit all the way around the radio, and the pocket moves around. The bottom line is that if this is the only one available, then it's worth it. If it isn't, try another brand. If I didn't get this for free with my receiver purchase, I would want my money back.

Good fit; save the clips from the stock radio's trim panel

Overall the trim kit is OK. Functionally the fit is perfect. However, the color is a bit off. The silver color is a bit brighter then the more "gunmetal" color of the 09's stock radio trim. However, as the 5's dash doesn't have much of the silver bits except for accent, it isn't really noticeable. Also remember to pluck off the white clips from top of the stock trim panel; you won't find any in the kit. Without them the panel will bend backward giving everyone a peek inside the dash e.g. when pulling the Ipod cable out of head unit. You'll need two small flat screwdrivers to pry off the snaps that hold them to the old trim panel. Precision or eyeglass screwdrivers are perfect for this. Be gentle as they break easy.

Not great, but much better than making my own

Installed this kit in a 2009 Mazda 5. The kit is made to fit older (2006-2007?) Mazda 5. The color of the paint is not quite a match for the stock silver in my 2009, and the openings around the 3 circular controls at the bottom leave a small gap underneath the controls. The paint has a slightly tacky (rubbery) feel and scratches very easily. I wish I had put another coat of my own paint on it before installing to protect it better and give it better feel. The biggest problem is that the white pressure clips that are needed to snap this piece into the dash do not come with the unit (or at least did not come with my unit). I had to remove the clips from the stock stereo face plate and attach them to this adapter unit to complete my installation. The instruction manual does not discuss this being a required step -- was my unit defective? The 2009 Mazda 5 disassembly is more complex than the 2006-2007 models the instructions were written for. With a single-DIN stereo install, I could not completely hide the DIN sleeve with the trim bezel included with the stereo, nor would the ISO bezel included with the trim kit fit due to the lip on the DIN sleeve. This is the only kit I could find online, and Crutchfield, as always, was awesome to include it for free. I wish there was a better option available, but it seems this is the only pre-fabricated adapter. It does what it is meant to do, and I'm glad I didn't have to build my own or modify the stock face plate.

Great fit in the 2010 Mazda 5 for mounting double DIN head units. I painted mine to match the car's body color using Duplicolor "Perfect Match" paint and it adhered well and has lasted for years now. Unfortunately this dash kit is forced into the wiring harness bundle when you buy a headunit; this time I didn't need one, but had no choice... the bundle discount was more than the $15 charged for this. What is the with from outside edge to outside edge of this panel?

I'm guessingyou meant to say width. I can't answer the question as I've sold my 5, but it does replace the factory panel exactly. Just make sure you transfer the small plastic clips that are on the factory panel to the replacement. Hope this helps.
