Surprisingly solid
Crutchfield customer from San Jose, CA on 11/15/2021
1995 Acura Integra
This kit provides a surprisingly solid mounting for a single DIN head unit. Using the DIN radio provision and the metal sleeve provided with the radio, the sleeve was installed into the frame. The sleeve can be installed with a very tight fit by bending the metal tabs on the metal sleeve. You have to study the sleeve a bit to determine which tabs to bend as all sleeves are different. With the sleeve secured to the frame and pocket the assembly was surprisingly rigid. The full assembly then slid easily and precisely into the dashboard location with a very tight fit - no movement or rattling. This on a mid 90's Integra.
Pros: Provides solid no rattle mounting

Poor instructions, mediocre quality
Crutchfield customer from Mukilteo, WA on 9/23/2020
1996 Honda Accord EX
Definitely the worst installation instructions I've ever seen. I'm an experienced mechanic and still had to basically figure out the installation process by trial and error and looking really closely at the kit. It ultimately fit ok, but the quality of the plastics isn't great, especially compared to the high quality plastics used in Hondas.
Pros: affordable
Cons: Cheap build quality and poor installation instructions.

Concisely worded instructions would be nice for those of us who do not install car stereos every day. The accompanying line drawings are difficult to read as the detail is poor. I would suggest upgrading the instruction manual to heavier white paper, not newsprint, and using black & white photos. I suspect it would have eliminated much trial and error on my install. The kit did work just fine in my '97 Accord, looks great better than factory.

This dash kit is essentially the same as when I installed a JVC unit in 2009. It fits perfect mounted to the new stereo and then into the car. I had to trim of a couple of unneeded tabs but they broke off exactly where they were supposed to.
Pros: Functions exactly as designed. No hassles.

Cheap Plastic Garbage
Sara from Concord, CA on 1/20/2018

Absolute cheap plastic crap. The instructions are useless. How do you describe the problem to someone over the phone. My Honda was originally mounted with solid metal brackets. Now I have to throw that solid craftsmanship away for this cheap plastic garbage? My stereo bounces because it's too heavy. Thanks for nothing. Maybe Crutchfield should offer more choices for the actual mounting part of the installation.
Pros: Free
Cons: Cheap, flimsy, crap instructions,

Metra 99-7892 Dash Kit
Martin from Tucson, AZ on 7/5/2017
2001 Acura Integra
Overall it worked fine, but it was definitely the hardest part of the install to figure out. My first mistake was not realising that the first page of the manual was for a different kit, and that rather than being foreign language translations, the rest of the manual contained the instructions for the other kits, including this one. Fortunately I was too confused by the parts not matching up to make any of the permanent modifications before I realised my error. For my car, two small tabs had to be cut off. Easy enough if you have a small hacksaw or similar, but be aware that you'll probably need to cut some plastic. The cage from my Pioneer head unit didn't seem to have really great bendy tabs to hold it into the bracket, however in the end I got it quite stable. I hear some other brands can require a little more modification. I spent some minutes figuring out how it was meant to be installed in my particular car - the manual didn't go into great detail. I eventually figured it out but it took some experimenting. I was surprised and a little dismayed that there are no screws involved anywhere, it's all held in by those plastic tabs. It was actually surprising how solidly it seems to hold together considering, but I'll see how well those last in the desert heat. There's basically no option to actually secure the head unit to a part of the car with screws (like the factory unit is) unless you rig something up yourself.
Pros: Fits surprisingly solidly. Retains the OEM dash pocket. Free! (Thanks Crutchfield!)
Cons: Manual could be clearer, particularly on which options to use, and how it fits in the dash The way the DIN cage is held in seems a little haphazard; entire kit and radio held in dash with only a few plastic tabs No way outside of DIY to secure the bracket or head unit itself to the car as theft-prevention measure

Fitment issues
Shane from San Diego, CA on 10/2/2016
1997 Acura Integra
I have installed many car stereos in my lifetime using both Metra and Scosche dash kits, and from my experience Scosche makes better products. This particular Metra dash kit unfortunately did not fit well, the instructions are vague at best and getting a clean install on the first try was not possible for my vehicle. After cutting the small tabs per instructions you are left with a bezel that is loose, which also protrudes too far from the mounting surface. In short the install now looks amateur and the stereo can wiggle out on one side as the remaining tabs are not enough to hold the stereo securely.
Pros: Free with purchase of head unit
Cons: poor instructions, bad fit

Mounting kit review for Sony receiver
Mark from Flemington, NJ on 9/12/2016
1996 Honda Accord LX
Plastic construction not nearly as robust as the factory radio mounts. Cleaver design, but the Counter-sunk screws included do not reach thru the support plates on the side of the radio. In addition, the universal drilled holes in these plates are NOT counter-sunk, so even if they were a bit longer to reach the threaded holes in the radio, they interfere with sliding the unit into place due to adding to the over-all width of the assembly. I am handy, so counter-sunk the holes myself, and everything fit into the dash as designed. (can't complain too much, since the nice people at Crutchfield's, gave me the mounting kit and the harness adapter included in the price of the receiver. And the 2-day free shipping was spot-on, so these guy's are really serious about customer service!!)
Pros: Radio and kit fit into the existing dash trim, and looks clean.
Cons: Kind of flimsy, and countersunk screws without countersinking the mounting holes, is pretty dumb.

This is a low quality product
Mark L from San Diego, CA on 9/12/2016
1998 Acura Integra
I used this with my stereo for a 1998 Acura Integra. The product came bent! The front part of the kit was curved so it was a pain to install. We blow-dried it to get it to straighten as we didn't want to deal with returning it but the quality was low. The material is a cheap plastic that feels like it can break if you don't handle it right. Breaking the clips off as instructed was a bit of a pain also.
Pros: It's free with purchase.
Cons: Quality, the finish, and the manual are all poor.

Metra 99-7892 Dash Kit
Cavan C. from Phoenix AZ on 7/25/2016
1999 Acura 2.3CL
This is a universal kit that fits multiple Honda/Acura vehicles. Because of this you are required to modify this kit for use in some models. For example, when installing a JVC KD-R870BT using this Metra 99-7892 Dash Kit in a 99 Acura CL, I had to cut several tabs off the faceplates. The directions are not very specific so be sure to pay close attention before removing these tabs. The big issue I have with this kit is the JVC Head Unit Faceplate will NOT fit once the final METRA faceplate is installed.
Pros: Mounting holes line up well.
Cons: Unclear directions, very tiny font, had to modify faceplates by removing plastic tabs.

Not the best kit I've installed..
Rico from Denver, CO on 6/13/2016
1993 Acura Legend
The instructions were not clear at all, and i ended up breaking tabs that didn't need to be broken, so the kit was loose in my dash. Luckily Crutchfield has great customer service (literally no wait time both times I called), and they sent me a replacement dash kit i received in 2 days. I broke only the side tabs this time and now the kit holds semi-firmly in the dash, but the base is not long enough to attach to the back where I would normally put the factory screws, so if someone wanted to, they could easily pull out the stereo with their hands and not much force.
Pros: I can put an aftermarket stereo in my Legend, looks ok..
Cons: Instructions, doesn't fit right, but does the job.

Holds head unit well, but very tight fit in dash
TB from Bloomington, IN on 4/25/2016
1998 Acura 2.3CL
This bracket was a little too big and a little too flimsy for my 98 Acura CL. I was able to make it work, but I had to lift pretty hard to get it to line up properly with the dash trim opening because the weight of the head unit pulled it down. Once I finally got it to stay in place correctly, the head unit's trim ring wouldn't stay in place like it used to. The bracket is obviously bending inward on both the top and bottom, proving that it either wasn't designed to necessarily fit Acuras or just wasn't measured well. It works, but it's not perfect. I know it's not cost effective to sell metal brackets, but I wish they had at least made it a few millimeters smaller so it would fit correctly.
Pros: - Easy to put together (slide the pieces in place, attach screws to keep them together). - Mounting holes line up well.
Cons: - Slightly too big and bends on top and bottom, causes head unit's trim ring to not fit tightly. - Weird bottom mount design (Honda's fault) + flimsy plastic (Metra's fault) causes the head unit to lean down and out and has to be pushed up pretty hard when putting the trim back on.

Easy to install, this dash kit fit perfectly into my '94 Honda Accord LX. I was able to install a new Alpine CDE-143BT stereo. My only complaints are that 1)The material does feel a little chintzy, and 2)The kit should come with some additional mounting hardware for ISO type stereo units. All in all, installation only took about 20 minutes and it looks clean. It mounts the stereo into the dash securely.
Pros: Easy installation
Cons: Should come with extra mounting hardware If it were reinforced, it would feel less cheap. But this is unnoticeable after install.

OK install kit
umina323 from Folsom, CA on 3/28/2014
1996 Acura Integra
This installed pretty easily into my car... installation instructions were OK... they missed a few screws and some info that would have been useful, AND the pictures shown for how it actually attached to the car were completely wrong... but I figured it out easily, and it did work. The plastic's not straight (it's kinda bowed) so it's very clear that it's not OEM and sorta sticks out like a sore thumb and makes my aftermarket deck look cheap or incorrectly installed (This was not my fault... it was warped before I even installed it). HOWEVER, it works and it was free, so I'm not complaining.
Pros: Works
Cons: Instructions are nearly useless Looks cheap

Installed this in my 95 4dr Integra GSR There are 2 tabs on each side that clip into place. The instructions say to clip off the to tabs on the top side. I elected not to initially because it didn't make sense too. but the fitment was shoddy. Decided to finally clip off those 2 top tabs as per instructions and it snapped in like an OEM unit!
Pros: Crutchfield's great price, OE Fitment; SIMPLE
Cons: there were a few extra pieces that it comes with depending on the deck type you have. It confused me so I had to do a lil trial and error. the instructions explain the differences but this being the first time I did my own install so I was new to it.

I purchased this for my Accord that had a radio but not receiver kit. The kit was very easy to assemble and install. The only problem was that there is no ISO mounting screws to properly secure the head unit against theft, but thats Hondas fault not this install kit. My only problem was the fitment was 8/10 and the receiver itself was pointing to the passenger side. I removed and reinstalled and I couldnt get it to point straight out. It wasnt too big of a deal but still annoying at times.
Pros: Instructions are great Fit was decent Has a pocket Does the job
Cons: Receiver was a little crooked

Uncomfortably Snug Fit
Crutchfield customer from New Jersey on 1/2/2013
Overall it does the job, but not very well at all.
Pros: The trim looks fine.
Cons: The fit was off by about half an inch, causing me to have to force it into the dash, putting a lot of stress on this piece, as well as the surrounding interior panels. We'll see how it holds up after a few weeks. The disassemble instructions for a 99 Acura CL are completely incorrect. If you have this model, you will find the Accord instructions much more helpful. The original stereo mount is metal, and this one is a much flimsier plastic.

3 stars, would try a different kit next time
Konvict_1 from Seattle, Wa on 12/17/2012
1997 Honda Accord LX
The fitment of the product was a C+ at best. The opening in kit for the deck was actually slightly ovaled out in that it bowed outwards in the middle. This allows the deck's mounting bracket to be seen slightly when the receiver is in the slot with the trim ring. If i ever take it out for some reason, i'll paint the mounting pocket/bracket black so it is less noticeable. I also didnt like how the kit with the deck installed "slumped forward" and did not support its own weight when mounted to the car in its stock location with the stock two bolts. the install kit uses the frame of center console to support the front edge of the deck and hold it upright. I was not a fan of this. It needs to come with a sturdier bracket. Also, the directions for disassemble of the car missed a critical screw thats buried in the center console. Thankfully I happen to have done some work back there before and knew of the screw and didnt snap the powel/tang/screw off but for someone new to this car, they have a 99% chance of doing so. The other kit available through crutchfield got such low reviews that i tried this one. In the future ill pay a few dollars for a better fitting, heavier built installation kit
Pros: Easy install
Cons: not that sturdy and uses the center console frame for support rather than being strong as a stand alone piece.

Gets the job done...well!
Derek M from Santa Cruz, CA on 7/16/2012
I used this to install a "hand-me-down" Sony MEX-1HD into my girlfriend's '97 Accord LX. Getting the old stereo out was more difficult than popping in the new one with the dash kit. The fit is flawless. At first I had a gap between the bottom of the pocket and the dash faceplate, but then I lifted up on the pocket and pushed the bottom lip in simultaneously and everything snapped into place perfectly. Looks great with the rest of the trim. I had no issues with the supplied instructions, just had to follow a car-specific set of instructions first before moving on to the general installation directions. Took me just over an hour to start and finish the job with a long dinner break in the middle, so I'd say 40 minutes tops as an absolute beginner working fairly slow.

Fits with a bit of a gap
EnergySamus from California on 5/25/2012
1994 Honda Accord EX
Installation was easy using a Sony CDX-GT565UP in a 5th Generation Accord EX Coupe. Like others have said, if you are using a DIN, bend the tabs on the sleeve, it does make for a tighter fit. The only problem is that on the right side of the kit, there is a small gap between the console and the kit that is not present on the left side... Not noticeable unless you look closely though.
Pros: Remove the old one, slide this one right in. Simple/easy to follow instructions are included. Looks like the original.
Cons: A bit plastic-y, but still sturdy. Left a small gap that wasn't present before.

Worked Great in 94 accord
Piston99 from Los Angeles, Ca. on 3/10/2012
1994 Honda Accord LX
This worked great in a 94 accord. I was skeptical at first that nothing would be there to support the front of the radio but found uot that the black full length factory bezel takes care of the front just fine. The only thing I wish the kit had included was the 2 screws that allow the attachment of the kit's rear support to the factory bracket in the bottom of the radio opening. If you are removing an existing radio you would already have these screws. A trip to the hardware store for 2 M5.8 x16 mm screws and 2 M6 washers was what I need to complete the install.
Pros: Easy 10 minite install. it took longer to solder the wires from the facatory harness adapter to the radio harness than mount the radio. Nice having a pocket. below the radio. I am not sure why the Crutchfield shopping cart defaults to the other model (120997890) with no pocket and no rear support.
Cons: Wish it had included the two required M5.8 x16 mm screws and 2 M6 washers to mount the rear support of the kit to the car.

fits, but looks kind of bad

1994 Honda Accord EX
The receiver kit has a different finish than the black plastic in by dash board; it's more textured and darker, so it sticks out a bit. Also, it's not completely flush with the dashboard, so I can see some of the top of my silver radio, between the receiver and the dashboard.
Pros: fits, easy to install
Cons: doesn't look very good

Does the job and fits well! Should fit all integras 94-01 just fine. I assembled according to instructions and it popped right in. Before this I tried one made by Scosche from WalMart. I figured its just a dash kit and they should all work about the same. I was wrong. I returned the Scosche one to walmart and ordered this one.
Pros: Works as intended!
Cons: none.

this mount does not work with the 94 Acura Legend unless you remove all the tabs and glue it in the opening. I ended up making my own mount and cutting the pocket out of this mount to glue into mine.

Follow directions and have patience

1994 Honda Accord DX
After reading the reviews, I was worried that this would fit poorly. Happily, it fits just fine. First, don't worry about the directions. They're fine. There is a section specific to each car model, then a section the applies to all models. I put this in a '94 Accord. The side tabs must be removed - that is plainly shown in the instructions. I had no issues with fit. If using a DIN pocket, bend the tabs on the metal DIN sleeve BEFORE sliding it into this. It'll snap in and fit tighter. The plastic bracket seems flimsy, but when installing the factory trim, move this adapter up slightly, and it will be supported on the front lower edge by the factory trim piece. The plastic rear bracket plus the support in front is sturdy enough.
Pros: 1. Does what it should. 2. Rather than the other model that gives you a 1/2 hole, this kit gives the factory-style "pocket". 3. Included with my stereo.
Cons: Two screws suppied seemed to be too small for the holes, but they did the job.

Works, but not the best...
Rob from Keymar, MD on 7/10/2011

This unit came as part of the package and I'm glad I didn't spend money on it. The instructions were poor quality (thanks to Crutchfield support for helping) and the quality of the product is "acceptable" at best. I had to modify the unit to fit properly in my car (per instructions) and the unit looks somewhat cheap. It did end up working in the end, but upgrade if you want a higher end look.

Honda In dash Receiver kit
Boilerknight from Milwaukee, WI on 4/20/2011
Well, Instructions are pretty much junk. It confuses you in thinking you have to install it 3 ways when you should only choose 1. And by choose I mean YOU decide which 1 you think you'd like to try. I chose the sturdiest 1, and to do that I had to cut and manually carve until the unit fit the way the directions said they should have already!!!. The assembly didn't slide into place, and if not for the screws on the base that attach to the car AND the cars dash panel, the whole assembly would be kinda wobbly when I drove. Thank god I left a whole weekend for me to figure this out!

Fits Perfect, Installs easy, Looks Cheap
Matthew Whitey White from Fairfax, VA on 3/3/2011
1995 Honda Accord DX
Had a 1995 with a stereo and separate CD player bought at the time the car was purchased. The LCD on my OEM car stereo had to go and the CD player wouldn't read burned CDs or MP3. I bought one unit (Kenwood KDC-MP342U) which had both CD and stereo. Then I had to "fill" the hole where the separate CD player used to be. This kit worked perfectly, was easy to install, and fills the space perfectly. The only drawback is that it looks like cheap black plastic when installed. Not that the interior of a 1995 Honda Accord is anything to shake a stick at but it would be nice if they had kits that look more in unison with the car's interior.

They Should Pay You to Take This!

I can't describe how bad this adapter is. I would give it negative stars if I could. It is very flimsy and doesn't hold the receiver in place very well. Although it would probably work well if you never plan on actually driving your car! I would pay more for a better unit if I could find one.

I appreciate that this receiver kit was given for free as a way of enticing us to buy, but a better system could have been given or even offered at discounted price. I live in Los Angeles and I found a better receiver kit for less and gave this one away. I just expected something better from Crutchfield. Two stars for getting this one for free.

How much can you really review a kit like this? It felt ridiculously cheap, the plastic wasn't very sturdy at all. The top portion (rectangle) where it connects to the pocket is not well built. I'm not sure if mine cracked during shipping or if I did it. I really doubt I did considering nothing as far as abuse occurred, and I am really OCD when doing installs and take a lot of care. Not that I expected it, but the pocket being that it is a slick plastic is worthless to hold things in (my decks remote in this case) as it will just slide out as you accelerate. I'll have to put a bit of rubber padding in there to give it some friction. The directions could have been better, but needless to say I did get it installed and it looks good, it's just not well built in my opinion. Considering this needs to hold an expensive piece of electronic equipment, you'd like to see better quality.

a decent kit
tomcat from TX on 4/7/2009
1997 Acura 3.2TL
I bought this kit for my self-installation of a single DIN head unit to replace the Double DIN factory cd player in my 97 TL. It's a good kit - however, I wish I had been more patient in trying to get it to fit in the factory harness. In addition to the top 2 tabs, i also removed the bottom tabs as was mentioned by the previous 2 reviewers to get it to fit flush --- the problem is that the weight of the headunit causes the bottom trim of the kit to protrude without the bottom 2 clips keeping it flush with the harness - if there was a way to support the rear of the source unit to the mounting harness, this could be prevented (I had no radio backstrap and the rear support helped brace the rear some but I felt not enough to prevent vibration movement while on the road) I ended up buying another kit from a local store & kept the lower tabs for support . If I could do it over, I'd keep the lower tabs for support - maybe alter them somewhat as needed for a good fit but keep them. I wish the kit had had extended to the rear support bar of the factory harness to allow a fixed support.

Installation takes some imagination
Carl from Benicia, CA on 2/3/2009
1996 Acura 3.2TL
Well, I got it in and it looks fine. The instructions for installation into my '96 Acura TL were a bit nebulous though. The rear support bracket would not install as shown in the step 3 of the illustration. For the unit to fit flush with the finished bezel, I had to remove both clips on the Radio Housing (the instruction say just remove the upper clips). As I have installed other after market units in this vehicle, I was not surprised nor thwarted by need modifications.

Great looks when installed. Really clean finish, I was very impressed. The install was rough in my 96 Acura TL. It tells me to cut off the top pair of snap in connectors which I did. I get everything in, and realize the bottom isn't flush because you need to cut off the bottom ones too, so I remove the WHOLE thing again. Cut off the bottom connectors and then it slides in properly. It wasn't horrible I suppose but took me pry 20 mins longer than it should have to get everything in and out. Like I said once it is there, it looks clean and professional. My unit is very safe I don't worry about it going anywhere, it was just tough to get in even when following the directions exactly.

This kit worked as expected for the most part. In a 97 Acura TL, I had to insert a screw through the factory mount into this one to stablized it at the bottom of the dash. After that it was very solid. Looks really nice within the dash for not having a double din receiver. Instructions were clear and covered a great many Hondas and Acuras.

Being a Honda technician for over 8 years, I was fairly impressed with the quality of the kit. The installation in my 96 Accord wagon proved very simple. The only downside of the kit is when I installed the sleeve for the radio I found that the hole was a little too large for the radio to fit snug. All that was required was to add a few thin shims under the sleeve and the radio fit flush. Overall a good product. The instructions that were included are very well written and should make this an easy project for anyone.
