This dash kit was difficult and I ended up getting it wrong, so now my head unit slumps out of the dash. The instructions were clear but the kit did not have properly labeled tabs on the bottom, so I guessed, and guessed wrong. I was supposed to remove all but the "C" tabs. The bottom didn't have any "C" tabs. I will need another one of these with labeled tabs on the bottom.
Pros: None
Cons: tabs on the bottom were not labeled at all.

Very sturdy ABS plastic receiver mount. Fits fine in 1999 Honda Prelude. Be sure to bend the receiver's DIN sleeve retainers strips on both the top AND the bottom of the DIN sleeve, to make sure the receiver will not droop under its own weight. Installation looks factory-good in Prelude.

Kit worked well. I attached the 'hands free' microphone at the edge of the storage box (cyanoacrylate glue) which eliminated the 'involved' process of feeding the microphone wire across the instrument panel and up the 'A' pillar.
Pros: Clear/concise install instructions.
Cons: Wish the storage box was a bit larger.

Nice fit for dash. The storage slot is very skinny, so anything but long narrow fingers would be hard to get things out. Plastic frame is somewhat weak so the radio tweaks it when installed and frame has to support the radio weight
Pros: Fits right. Looks good when installed
Cons: Unneeded tabs not easy to remove Lower storage space smaller than factory one and not very usable. Somewhat flimsy support for holding radio in correct alignment

Made installation fast/easy/simple, looks decent and did what it's supposed to do. However, in the rear of the 'pocket' are small cut out's as though something would snap into them which imo something should....a flat plate to fit inside the pocket and cover the holes to give it a finished look. Not likely anyone will look in there and see the open holes, but I know it! I really see no purpose for the those so why not eliminate them in the mfg process?!

This dash kit is nothing special. The opening is way too small for even a small hand to fit inside. The color and texture of the plastic doesn't match my car's interior well and the material seems cheap and brittle. The best thing about this kit is that it came free with the stereo I purchased. Overall, it does what it's supposed to do.

Yes,for a 99-03 saab 9-3 se you need to trim a little off.I didn't like the storage at the bottom of the stereo.Makes you have to bend down to look inside so I put it at the top.I trimmed mine using a jig saw with the mount in a vice.On the back side were the stereo slides in is a raised piece of plastic. This works perfect as a guide to trim.Just put the jig saw blade right next to that and cut it all the way across.Clean, straight cut.Looks perfect!
Pros: Looks great

Matt from Pell City, AL on 7/9/2018
2005 Honda Civic Special Edition
I purchased this for my 2005 Honda Civic EX Special Edition. It fits well, but there are two problems. 1. The finish doesn't match the stock well. It's something that most people might not notice for a while, but once you do, it's all you can see. 2. It has several tabs, and you have to break off certain ones depending on your vehicle. The instructions only cover 98-01 CRVs and Preludes, so it didn't help for my Civic. However, one quick call to Crutchfield's customer service fixed everything. This is an A+ for Crutchfield, C- for Metra.
Pros: It fits, and it's free with a radio.
Cons: Doesn't match the factory plastic, and you have to call Crutchfield to see which tabs to break off since the instructions only cover some vehicles.

Fit fine. Easy to install. But the height of the opening under the stereo is so small that you can't reach your hand into it... can't fit you last set of knuckles past the openng. So if you put something small in there, it would slide to the bottom and you wouldn't be able to reach it with your fingers to get it out. It's fine for a place to put your phone, but not much else.

Didn't fit my 2000 CRV with a Kenwood unit.
Craig from Jersey City, NJ on 1/12/2017
2000 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
I installed a Kenwood KMM-BT515HD in a 2000 Honda CRV. I thought it would just snap in if I used the screw holes in the Kenwood unit and the car's mounting bracket as instructed in the Crutchfield information sheet for my car. The Metra Dash kit did not fit. There was not enough room between the top of the Kenwood unit and the dash trim to fit the top rail of the dash kit which is about a half inch wide. I ended up just using the trim plate that came with the Kenwood and the dash slot from the factory radio which worked fine and looks really good. I would have had to drill holes in the cars mounting brackets to mount the radio lower to use the Metra kit. In addition the slot in the Metra kit is allot smaller than slot that came with the factory radio.

Metra Kit
Karl from colorado springs, CO on 2/22/2016
1997 Honda CRV
The instructions for the use of the Kit were not readily understandable because it had to apply to three different stereos. The supports that blocked the opening for the stereo unit had to be removed but you had to use common sense in making a clean removal to the frame (a jig saw was used) in order not to make a mistake. The diagram of what mounting clips were to be removed might have also for clarity have indicated the supports removal at the same time , and a jig saw had to be used for the supports while the clips could be bent off. It is not quite understandable just what use the C clips had and why other clips had to be removed because they did not seem to have been in the way. You really to bend all the clips of the sleeve that could be bent up against the housing for a snug fit and not just a couple of them along the top and bottom. The housing itself still did not fit snugly to the existing factory frame and there was a slight gap along the bottom of the housing and the factory frame which required placing a brace (used the removed plastic support material). at the back of the housing to push the housing up against the factory frame. The finish of the plastic housing was also dull and distracted from the finish of the stereo and existing housing. But it did not look too bad and would not be readily noticed as being unusual. The housing was furnished free by Chrutchfield, a plus.
Pros: The housing was adequate for its purpose.
Cons: The finish. The housing did not fit snugly against the existing factory without modification.

going_28 from Audubon, Pennsylvania on 9/19/2015

This doesn't fit (2001 Saab 9-3 base) at all without cutting about 3/8" off the top, and all snap-in tabs. After that, it looks great, I think, but it doesn't sit flush. Sits about 1/4" back from the face, which for me is fine. The cut top piece hides neatly under the pop-out cup holder, as long as you don't cut it too short.

The reason why its free
GraysonJ. from Holly Springs, NC on 4/9/2014
1999 Saab 9-3
I drive a '99 Saab 9-3 and even though Crutchfield insist that this in-dash receiver fits my car, it doesn't, at all. Its too tall so now I'm stuck deciding on whether I should trim this free one or go buy another one that actually fits. Also the tabs where my head unit would go are a pain to remove. I have to saw them off and file the edges down if I choose to use this kit. The storage pocket is also rather small. I can fit my wallet so it really isn't that bad. Its just my fingers can't reach the back cause my knuckles are to big to fit in, so if anything were to get stuck back there it'd be a pain to get it. Other then that its a sturdy unit. Im sure if it actually fit it'd do its job just fine.
Pros: -Storage pocket can hold wallet and phone in a more convenient place -Pretty sturdy considering its free
Cons: -Doesn't even fit my car -Tabs are a pain to get off. I have to saw them off and file the edges down.

The tabs can be laborious to remove. Be sure you have a sharper box cutter than I did. On the plus side, if you need those tabs, they seem to be pretty sturdy. This kit fit my 99 Civic very well and looks snug once installed. Everything feels sturdy and secure so far. The pocket seems like it could be bigger given the space it has, but it does feel thickly-walled and sturdy.

Cons: Tabs are a bit laborious to remove; the pocket seems like it could be bigger.

It works like it should, but the tab removal process is a little confusing if you don't pay attention, which I didn't. Make sure you remove the correct tabs so you don't have to stuff an old sock (or 3) under the dash to keep it in place. Also, the slot at the bottom is so deep that anything small you put in there will have to be fished out of there with a stick since hands can't fit.

Does not fit Saabs
Lee from Alexandria, VA on 11/23/2013
2002 Saab 9-3
Despite Crutchfield's claim, this does not fit Saab cars, and Metra does not claim it fits Saab cars. After quite a bit if time with a Dremel, I was finally able to make it fit , but there is still no way to secure it in the space (other than a super tight fit). It does not support the radio bracket adequately, and I had to add spacers in the back to keep the radio from tilting. The storage space is unnecessarily small and needlessly tapers toward the back. Had I realized up front it didn't fit my car, I would have looked for an alternative.
Pros: It was free.
Cons: Did not fit my Saab. Storage space could have been bigger.

This product looks nice enough out of the box, until I had the realization that this wasn't designed to fit my car and that it is only close to the same dimensions. I drive a '99 Saab 9-3 and had to double check my order when looking at this package. I had to trim off approximately 1/2" from the top side and am not very happy with the end appearance but it had to be altered in order to fit. I would have liked knowing beforehand that this wouldn't fit so that I could've shopped around to find a better fitting option.
Pros: The storage pocket is a nice size.
Cons: Did not fit and Did not know beforehand

Saab 9-3 Alpine radio install
Jerry from wyckoff, NJ on 10/13/2013
As it is not an exact fit product, there is some necessary skill in installing this bracket for the radio. Just being informed when you buy it would have been nice. In the end it is not that difficult to do, just have to spend some time to trim down the unit about 5/16" carefully and evenly. if you have a trim plate for the Alpine radio and put the sleeve in and the radio, before you try to install the unit, put the trim on the radio and match the amount you cut off the plate to match the top of the radio trim, provided you put the radio on the top of the adaptor plate. If you cut it down exactly to the trim plate it will fit reasonably snug as well.
Pros: Looks fine when all done as described.
Cons: Not if you are not handy with a hacksaw and files. I used the Hacksaw for the first cut then I used a table grinder to get it closer then the file to bring it exactly where it need to be.

I purchased a new head unit, speakers, and various installation parts from Crutchfield. I was very pleased the whole purcase experience except this piece. I had to remove tabs and cut out parts in order to use it with my head unit. A less generic kit would been much better: I particularly had trouble removing the supports for dual-spindle head units without damaging the rest of the (somewhat flimsy) kit.
Pros: It worked
Cons: Difficult to customize, a bit flimsy

I expected it to fit right into the space after removing my factory radio...it did not. There was quite a bit of cutting and filing to make it happen. The final outcome was good though. You just need lots of patience to get there.
Pros: Price was low enough to warrant purchase.
Cons: Wish my Crutchfield advisor had mentioned that it would need modification to fit my car. Imagine my surprise when I opened the shipping package to see Honda written all over the product material.

Disappointing In Dash receiver Kit
Macko from Chesapeake VA on 5/23/2013
I have never been disappointed with an order from Crutchfield until I received this in dash kit that I bought for my daughter as part of her Christmas Present. The radio, wiring harness, speakers, and the installation instructions were top rate, but this piece of plastic leaves a lot to be desired. Ok, it did what it was supposed to do. The radio fit the in the kit, and the kit fit the car, It works and was easy to install. However once the installation is complete you have to live with the appearance and uselessness of the final product. The size of the opening of the little compartment is miniature and the textured finish is cheesy and cheap looking. Granted this is installed in a 1999 Honda CRV, not a Lexus or Mercedes ... , and my daughter has not complained a bit, but as you can see in the picture, there is plenty of room to expand the oval opening to a more useful, taller wider and deeper squared-off-corner compartment with a much nicer finish for a better appearance.
Pros: Functional, nice fit, easy to use,
Cons: Cheap appearance of the textured plastic and small useless

I can't figure out why everyone wants to hate on the pocket underneath I guess they want the crutchfield fairy to magically make more space in the dash where the stock stereo was the pocket is as big as it can be. I think the pocket is perfect for your phone and wallet because it doesn't slide around. It's easy to install and looks like it came with the car

This is my 3rd Crutchfield installation in a Honda CRV and the first time I had to trim any plastic off the installation kit. I was kind of bummed about that but the trimmed-out edges are not visible once you install the receiver trim ring. The installation of a JVC receiver fit perfectly and was snug and secure. The install went exactly according to instructions.
Pros: Quick and easy install Good instructions Good fit and finish
Cons: This is a petty gripe but I liked the old Honda dash kits I got from Crutchfield better than this one.

DaveM from California on 7/17/2012

The receiver kit fit perfectly, however the cubbie is too small for most anything and the plastic is cheap. Even with the same plastic a resized cubbie would reduce the amount of plastic showing. Used in a 2000 Civic EX coupe. Given the original radio used screws to secure the radio from behind, this kit could also use those mounting holes for a more stable fit.
Pros: Fits perfectly, it was free and easy to install.
Cons: Could be a more asthetic design.

2004 Honda Odyssey
This turned out to be useless for a 2004 Honda Odyssey. The clips were not sized right to engage the dash and just would not clip in at all. The original stereo has little steel angle clips fastened to it that attach to the dash interior with 4 bolts, and I figured out that I could attach those clips to the new radio, and attach the old storage compartment below it attached to the new radio just like the stock radio. Even if this face plate did fit the vehicle properly, the DIN sleeve attachment to the faceplate was hokey, and the radio would have been rattling around like crazy.
Pros: I didn't pay anything for it.
Cons: Unattachable to vehicle, crummy attachment to radio. One more hunk of plastic to hit the landfill or recycling center.

I got this for free when I purchased CD player for my Honda Civic 2000 sedan. This allows you to install the new system as it's designed, I mean that you can easily slide out the player to reach the rear of the unit. The downside is that this has much smaller pocket than the original square pocket (deeper, though). I chose not to use this to keep the original square pocket. I need a good space to keep small things including some CDs. I don't have easy access to the rear of the CD player, but I still think it's okay for me.

As others have said here the pocket/storage size of this kit is two narrow and deep to be usable. The insert fits snugly enough and would be great but for this. Hard to understand why a company as good as Crutchfield appears to be would sale this as their kit. The radio I purchased is great but I miss my previous very usable storage space. This is a sacrifice the customer should not have to make. I broke off the wrong clips at the bottom of mine so it doesn't always stay snugly in place. Not what I wanted, but it was as described
David from Eldersburg, MD on 8/3/2010
2003 Honda Odyssey
I bought a new receiver with rear mounted USB and bluetooth microphone to replace factory installed stereo and in dash 6 CD changer for 03 Honda Odyssey. I wanted some place for the USB and mic cables to come out on the dash and something to fill the space in console where one unit was replacing two. This piece of thin plastic was not good, but after modification it worked "ok." I was supposed to mount the radio in "DIN" style sheet metal sleeve supported by this plastic frame (no other attachment to dash!). That was totally unacceptable as plastic faceplate clips failed to hold when test fit per instructions. I used factory brackets (after drilling to match holes on new stereo) for SOLID mount. Then cut away clips that did not mate console properly, removed shaft mount plates to fit over stereo. I drilled 1/2 inch hole in pocket to allow USB and mic wires into pocket (which is too small for anything else as others say ). I placed hard rubber gasket ring from new stereo to hold this piece of plastic in console. This piece does match console & stereo as I mounted it (with factory mounts screwed to stereo and dash), but it would NEVER have worked as described in instruction manual. Clips did not hold tight into console or dash opening and stereo would have flopped around w/ only DIN pocket holding it. Any bump would have cracked the faceplate. If I hadn't gotten it free, I would have returned the mounting kit as not worth the price.

I wish I had read through the reviews before I purchased this; because as someone had said before, it doesn't fit in a Saab as it is advertised to do. As I got everything ready to install, I removed the factory stereo and started to install this kit. I quickly realized there was no way it was going to ft into the dash. Thinking it was the wrong kit, I called Crutchfield Tech Support. The technician verified the make and model of my car and proceeded to tell me that the kit sent is the right kit and their installation notes stated that 3/16" needs to be shaved off of the top of the kit for it to fit in the Saab 9-3. I replied, "So, you don't actually have a kit that fits a Saab 9-3." He replied that this is all they had. I'm sure like the many of you, you don't work in a garage and have access to a lot of tools, so it took me about a week of asking people to find someone with a band saw that could help me mill down the top of the kit so it would fit in the car. This of course, takes off the clips that hold it into the dash as well. Luckily it fits very tightly and with a little finagling, I was able to get it to stay in place. Also, like the other users, I agree that the pocket could be bigger, though it does hold an iPod/iPhone nicely. However, if it were larger, it would better support the head unit, if you opt to mount it above the pocket (as I did). I found some hard foam padding to put in between them to add stability to the unit.

Metra 99-7893 Dash Kit
ptmoy from New York, NY on 11/7/2009
2001 Honda CRV
Fits fine, but a bit cheap looking. Bottom tray is completely useless. Unlike the original, the tray on this kit is so small that you can't get your hand into it to get stuff out. I made the mistake of putting the remote control in the tray. It quickly slid to the back. It was really frustrating trying to get it back out.

very straight-forward installation and fits well in my 2000 civic. would be nice if it had supports to help prop up the underside of the head unit and screw holes/brackets to secure to chassis.

Works pretty well

2001 Honda CRV
This fits our Honda CR-V just great. Installed very quickly, seems to hold well. I read many of these reviews that said it is cheap and not strong enough. I'm not sure what was expected from this unit but it seems just fine to me. It fit the first time without any hassle, the deck seems to be very solid (we have lots of gravel roads in Montana) and the pocket fits an iPod just perfect. I drilled a hole in the back of the pocket to feed the USB cable of the deck through and so now the iPod plugs in easily and has a spot to sit nicely. Best part, it was included with the purchase of the deck!

Installed this in 2004 Honda Odyssey. The only thing that hold ( mounts ) this in dash are the plastic tabs on top and bottom. Running to the parts store today to see they have any better option I won't return this kit to crutchfiled since this was free anyway. Also as others have mentioned , the pocket you see in the picture is almost useless to keep anything. it's too narrow.

Metra 99-7893 Dash Kit
Bodie from Gville, FL on 5/10/2009
1999 Honda Prelude
The only good thing is it fit my car. It is cheap plastic and there is no stabilizers with it. It also doesn't provide customization so that you can screw it to the receiver since none of the holes matched my receivers. It is a basic, cheap, generic plastic case that should be remodeled.

2000 Civic In Dash Kit
William from Red Sox Nation, Hanover MA on 5/2/2009
2000 Honda Civic
This kit for Hondas is pretty straightforward. Though the Civic install may be a little more involved than most (the heater/AC controls are removed & reinstalled), just take your time and follow the directions. The finished install won't be mistaken as OEM but it looks and fits good, as does the radio. The lower storage space is retained as well. Total time from start to finish: 2 hours, give or take.

cheap and ugly with useless pocket!
Matt from Shepherdstown WV on 4/17/2009
2000 Honda Civic
The install kit for my 2000 Honda Civic EX is cheap and very ugly. It just snaps into the plastic bezel of your dash, thats it... Thats all that holds your new head unit in! The little pocket that is molded into it is 100% useless. Im looking for another kit to see if I can get something that looks more like stock or at least has a usable storage pocket. Coming from Crutchfield I never expected this level of quality....

A tip on installation
John from Middleton, WI on 4/2/2009
1999 Honda Odyssey
Everything went together well, except for the order in which the radio is inserted into dash. Before sliding radio /housing into dash, connect all plugs. The instructions had you install the radio then hook up plugs, which would be impossible to reach. Radio should also be firmly attached to adapter before insertion as well. Bending prongs to hold the radio in bracket would be impossible if done after radio was in dash.

Does not fit in Saab 9-3
John from Atlanta Ga on 3/1/2009
1999 Saab 9-3
This unit does not fit in my 99 Saab 9-3. It is about 1/10 inch too wide and too tall to fit in the dash opening. I was able to trim the outer edges using a dremel tool to get the kit to fit. That being said, it is not very secure since it does not fasten with screws and the supplied plastic tabs did not secure the unit.

Horrible
Jim from Bountiful, Utah on 2/9/2009
This is the worst dash kit I have ever gotten for a car. It didn't fit right and looked bad in my car. I called crutchfield to try and get something different, the adviser said it was the only one for my van. I went to a local car stereo place and they hooked me up with one that fit great totally different style.

Flimsy, cheap-looking, and disappointing
Keith from Chicago suburbs on 1/31/2009
2001 Honda CRV
This mounting pales in comparison to the sturdy way the OEM radio was mounted in our daughter's 2001 Honda CRV. To begin, the plastic is very thin, and the DIN frame flexes with respect to the pocket with the radio installed. I had to cement a wood spacer in the gap to keep the radio from bouncing. Additionally, I have very little confidence in the flimsy plastic prongs that hold the frame in the dash opening. As others have pointed out, including our daughter, the pocket is pretty useless because of its narrow opening and extreme depth. I know it's "free", but I would have preferred to pay a few dollars more for a mounting kit that looks more professional and is attached rigidly to the OEM brackets with screws.

So-So
cabexbx from Pittsburgh, PA on 1/24/2009
2004 Honda Odyssey
As others have said, this doesn't really lock or snap into place, it's just held in place by the trim. I was a little surprised that it didn't lock or bolt into place. To be honest I didn't read the other reviews prior to purchasing this. The pocket is a bit smaller than the stock pocket on our Odyssey, but it's not a huge deal. It does fit nicely and we haven't had any troubles with it getting out of place. Would I buy it again? Maybe, maybe not. I'd think about it.

Misfit for Honda Odyssey
sthangirala from Texas on 10/17/2008
2004 Honda Odyssey
This unit does not match the interior dash and does not fit fill. The stock unit came with solid brackets held by 4 screws. This one is kind of hanging to the dash trim. As others have pointed out the pocket is too narrow (but quite deep). So if you drop the remote or small cellphone.. it will difficult to retrieve especially while driving. I wish they but more thought in designing this since it is supposed to fit a standard 'Double din' opening.

The kit covers the gaps around the receiver and that's all it's good for. It doesn't snap in place, more like held in place by the car trim. The little slot can't fit anything other than a few CDs. The edges are rough - ou can't fit your hand inside it if you put small items that fall to the back and if you try to get it out, you scrape your hand really bad. Whoever designed the kit never considering form and function. At least they could made the slot a little bigger. Oh well, it's free but I'd pay a little more for something you can use.

Roger from Swisher, IA on 3/23/2008
I have dealt with Crutchfield for many years now, buying several different products and have never been let down. Their customer service would be hard to be by anyone. The knowledge and guidance offered by the professional technical assistance staff is outstanding. This particular installation took about 1 1/2 hours and only because of the superb installation literature included. The precision and clarity of the diagrams is wonderful. I will continue to purchase products from Crutchfield because I know they will always be there when I need assistance. This product was installed without a hitch and looks great in my civic.

Metra 99-7893 Dash Kit
Gary from Honolulu, Hawaii on 3/18/2008
I helped my brother install his Alpine deck and this kit was included. I wish the retaining tabs were a bit bigger. Not sure how well they will stay in place over time. We just put it in 2 days ago, so it is too soon to tell. I do have to say though that it was really easy to install. The rim of the extra shelf's edges were really rough in some places, but i smoothed it down with my dremel and it was fine after that. I found that the shelf's opening was too narrow for my fingers to reach the back. I suppose it is good for something big like 1 or 2 CD cases , but if you drop something in the back, it will be hard to get it out. Overall, it was free with the purchase of the deck, so I can't really complain.

Metra 99-7893 Dash Kit
Sunny from columbus, oh on 6/16/2005
I was somewhat disappointed to say the least that after only 4 months of having installed this mounting kit, it broke. The two plastic prongs on the bottom that hold it in place snapped off, causing the whole mounting kit (including my cd player) to fall out of the dash every time I'd shift gears or turn a corner or even hit the brake. Eventually, it came out completely and would not stay in, making it incredibly easy for any half-wit to steal the clarion deck from my car. The mounting piece needs more than just 2 small, flimsy, plastic prongs to hold it in place; they broke off in less than 4 months! That's insane. If it hadn't come free with my deck, I'd complain a lot more.
