Don't Miss Those Clips!
David from Mequon on 4/9/2020
2010 Toyota Tacoma
Fit and finish is good but not great - the clock/flasher button assembly sits a bit cockeyed. My biggest complaint is about the instructions, they're complex and dense and hard to follow for a newbie such as myself. I totally missed the steps for the #10 screw, its plastic clip, as well as the trim panel clips. There are so many parts thrown at you it's kind of overwhelming. And I'll add that the typical workspace of a car seat covered in stuff doesn't let you get very organized. I only learned about them after reading these excellent reviews.
Pros: Price
Cons: Instructions hard to get right the first time. Radio seated very deep.

Good product. Matches dash coloring and texture well, better than expected based on other reviews read prior to purchase! Fits well into dash; snug, yet easy removal if needed for adjustments. Receiver fit well, tight. Received a 4 star mostly because the directions for assembly and install left a lot to be desired. They definitely could have been more clear, plus there are extra parts that are unneeded for installation. Overall I am happy with this product!
Pros: Good Match to factory Dash; coloring and texture better than expected. Nice fit, good look. Bonus it is included in the purchase of the stereo receiver.
Cons: Plastic parts, especially brackets and sleeve for receiver, are flimsy. Directions could be clearer, more specific; kit provides many parts unneeded, yet directions fail to specifically specify what to use for assembly and install receiver specific. It was a bit of a trial and error, guessing game to figure it out.

A great kit for replacing the stock stereo with an upgraded stereo system.
Pros: Fairly easy to install. Only had one issue which was solved with a YouTube video.
Cons: This was the first time I've replaced a stereo in any vehicle. The instructions were OK but they assumed you know something about car stereo installations to begin with. I was doing good until the instructions told be to install the DIN Cage into the new kit. I didn't know what that was or even looked like. I was out of parts so I thought it was missing. Went to YouTube and saw a video that showed that it comes mounted on the new stereo and had to be removed and re-installed on the kit.

Don from Simpsonville, SC on 5/29/2018

Product looks good and fits well. Know that you will have to re-use some factory parts and pieces, not overly clear in the directions. Most is obvious. Some of the hardware is not high quality/inconsistent piece to piece, so be prepared to make adjustments and be adaptable to make it fit and work. Crutchfield service is excellent. Manage expectations relative to the price.
Pros: cheap, fits well, looks good and close to factory
Cons: inconsistent quality, some holes, sizes, etc do not match piece to piece, be creative and make it work

This looks great in my 2009 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab, as if it were factory equipment. I Installed a single-DIN stereo; I'm glad to have the storage slot underneath. Neither the product photos nor the What' In This Box list mention the four small white clips which need to be attached to the trim panel, but it was not too hard to figure out. Overall I am very happy with this kit. Four and a half stars is what I would rate it, but since that is not possible, five is more accurate than four.

This thing fits well and looks great. It doesn't look after market in my truck at all. The only gripe I have is the instructions. The kit comes with multiple "extra" parts to match a variety of new equipment, which is great. But it just tells you to select the piece that's right for your stereo. Well, which one is right? It also didn't do a great job explaining that the large panel would not be connected to the rest of the rig in the same way the factory panel was. This led to it falling out on me because I hadn't applied the clips that it didn't tell me I would need. I'm sure this was a rookie mistake and someone who works on cars regularly would know, but I'm not that person. Still, it worked out in the end with only a little confusion and I'm now very happy with my set up.

Install brackets did the job nicedly
Ralph from Williamsburg, VA on 7/3/2017

Kit has everything you need to install your matching unit. At first I didn't think everything was correct but watched the install on YouTube and it all became clear. Once I understood the complete method to the madness I had no problem in getting the unit hooked up and positioned correctly. For me taking my time, understanding each step and not rushing was the answer. When tightening the hardware remember it is not holding the Crown jewels and snug fit everything after first installing with plenty of slack to facilitate the correct fit.
Pros: Fit well, looks good and feels solid upon completion.
Cons: Instructions a bit unclear (watch the YouTube install) Would prefer metal brackets

Overall, a pretty darn good fit. The surface is a little shinier than the rest of the interior...but then...that's what a 12 year old truck, with a nice, brand new dash piece will get ya. It's like a bright, new, shiny penny...in a bucket of 50 year old cent pieces. :-) Still...love it to death. Appreciate everything Crutchfield!
Pros: Great fit within the dash space. Extra little storage cubby for my remote...and wallet...and cell phone!
Cons: Just too darn nice for my 12 year old truck. :-)

The Metra dash kit does NOT fit flush into the existing location. The top connections do not fit snugly; as a result, the top part of the dash alignment is imperfect, causing it to pull out easily. I was disappointed when I noticed this, but I didn't have any alternative.

Cons: Poor fit....it's not what I had expected. I guess you get what you pay for.

The Dash kit looks great if has the same texture as oem one which is nice because it makes it less noticeably different than the factory unit the dash kit also fit great very easy to figure out how to assemble it my only complaint is you have to be very careful with it because the plastic on some parts it very thin and brittle but other parts of the kit like the single din side mounts are super think and sturdy and the big facia piece seems well built it's the smaller accent pieces and the little tray parts that seem kinda cheap
Pros: Looks OEM easy and great fit

Disappointing Metra Kit
HC from Santa Clara, CA on 12/31/2016
2005 Toyota Tacoma
I ordered this with a Pioneer DEH-X6900BT receiver for my Tacoma. The service from Crutchfield was excellent and shipping was fast. The Metra dash kit however was a big disappointment. The instructions were lacking and better directions would have saved tons of time (thank goodness for online videos). The quality seemed cheap as well. It also uses plastic mounting brackets instead of re-utilizating the OEM metal brackets which would have been more secure. The fit tolerance is terrible. The top of the kit needs to be forced into place and does not stay locked into the bracket insert. The entire dash kit can pop out when driving on uneven surfaces or even going over a standard speed bump. Seems like Metra did not complete any tolerance fit checks when designing this product. The only plus side if any, is that the kit color matches the OEM interior of my Tacoma. I wish Crutchfield had other options as I would have paid a little extra for a better quality product and not having to install the kit twice. I will likely purchase a Scosche kit as some other customers have suggested.
Pros: Color (silver) matched OEM interior.
Cons: Lack of detailed instructions. Cheap quality. Does not fit properly into dash (visible gaps).

Works as advertised
Crutchfield customer from Baton Rouge, LA on 11/14/2016
2005 Toyota Tacoma
This kit is one of the more difficult I've used , but it works as advertised. The instructions are vague. I had a hard time getting the clock and hazard button out of the stock panel. Thank goodness for youtube! The hole where the head unit goes is too thin. There is not enough plastic to use the normal, triangular tabs on my head unit sleeve. I had to improvise. The mounting "feet" are soft, The whole mount would twist when I tightened the bolts to attach the kit. I had to install the trim panel first to keep everything in line while the bolts were tightened. The trim panel has one less attachment clip than the stock unit. Also, the trim panel is not perfectly flush with the rest of the dash. My kit was also missing the four #8 x 3/8s truss head screws. Had to run to the hardware store to find something that would work.
Pros: Does the job
Cons: One of the more difficult dash kits I've installed Vague directions Plastic is very soft Fit is not perfect Not enough "meat" on the head unit slot to properly attach the head unit

Terrible fit and cheap plastic
Matt M from Sandy, UT on 8/22/2016
2005 Toyota Tacoma
First, the packaging was missing one of the pieces (Crutchfield, per usual, was great about solving that issue, even though it was Metra's fault). Second, the kit is super flimsy. The plastic mounting brackets are weak and allowed for a lot of play (vs the factory metal ones which are super study but didn't work with the new stereo). I am not going to install a stereo that I am going to worry will fall out of my dash the first time I take the truck off-road. The fit also was poor with a huge gap at the top of the dash. I ended up paying for the Scosche kit which had a much better fit, and a larger pocket as a bonus. Also it should be noted that you need to re-use the little plastics clips from the factory bezel, they don't say that in the instructions.
Pros: Free
Cons: Flimsy plastics used to attach stereo to dash Poor fit

My truck already had a single din installed by the previous owner . This kit is not complete for double din installation it utilizes the two stock brackets on the original Toyota head unit . Needless to say I was screwed another week worth of wait time to order factory Toyota brackets from Florida!
Pros: Looks clean, quality
Cons: Incomplete for double din install needs two original Toyota brackets from original head unit , I guess in a way that's a pro because they are heavy duty metal but if you don't own them your out of luck??

Not The Best, But It Works
Michael from Alabama on 6/23/2015
2005 Toyota Tacoma
I got this kit because it was part of the package deal from Crutchfield. Build quality on the whole kit is average at best. Lots of excess plastic left around where the mold releases were, the silver does not match the dash, and the mounting brackets are plastic, which allow a good bit of flexing. I also noticed that the pocket (for single DIN installation) is a little smaller than other kits I've seen. Also, for the dash clips on the faceplate, I had to trim some of the plastic off the tabs in order to make the clips fit right. Despite all that, it made it into the truck without breaking. We'll see how long it lasts.
Pros: -It fits -It didn't break during install -My hazard switch fit, but I've seen where others' did not
Cons: -The mounting brackets are rather flimsy -The molded plastic has a good bit of excess on the edges -The silver does not match -The kit as a whole flexes a good bit

Not bad for price, but you may have to clean up excess plastic (from injection molding process) Fit was OK, after several adjustments and swapping plastic clips, texture and color are spot on
Pros: Quick to install, Texture, Color Match
Cons: Quality control lacking ''burrs, excess plastic''

Find an alternate kit
Dan from Alabama on 5/7/2015
2010 Toyota Tacoma
See the cons for all the reasons that I dislike this product. While my overall satisfaction with Crutchfield is very high, I am very dissatisfied with this installation kit and will have to find a replacement of higher quality. This thing is a piece of junk and not worth the plastic it's molded from.
Pros: It fills the whole in the dash left after removing the stock radio.
Cons: Flimsy, doesn't fit dash well, won't support the weight of the receiver, won't stay securely in the dash, looks "cheap", rattles while driving.

Worst install kit
Matt from California on 5/1/2015
This is by far the Worst install kit ever! Not only does it not match the interior color and the texture of the dash but this is absolutely a PIB to install correctly to ensure that the Double DIN fits level and flush. The clips that are provided are cheap and you will loose them in your dash causing you to spend another hour taking everything apart to retrieve them. Order an alternate kit from online or get it professionally installed.

The fit is not as nice as I would like it to be. One side sticks out more than the other. The fit of the clock and the hazard light button is not the best. I'm told the Scosche kit is Much better, but Crutchfield does not sell that model.
Pros: It's works.
Cons: The fit could be better

Great trim kit
Slate creek from Ponte Vedra, FL on 3/31/2015
This trim kit far exceeded my expectations. It looks just like it came from the factory when I got done. It's seems to be a real quality durable product that will last a while.
Pros: Clean look and ease of installation. Looks factory after install
Cons: Instructions were a little difficult to follow but after a couple trial and error I got it right.

Quality issue
Edward from California on 3/31/2015
The Metra kit was not of the quality I wanted to put in my truck. The bezel that surrounds the stereo and fills the area between the stereo and the dash panel was not straight and the gaps were not equal. It looked cheap. I purchased a Scosche kit and the quality was much better. The fit was clean and the overall quality was better.
Pros: Free with the stereo
Cons: Quality issue. Parts did not fit properly.

this kit is garbage
taco from Nevada on 3/7/2015
2008 Toyota Tacoma
I bought this kit to install an aftermarket radio in my 2008 tacoma. It comes with 2 plastic mounts to replace the oem steel brackets that bolt to the dash. These plastic mounts flex and do not feel as secure as the oem mounts. The kit was missing the screws that were required for assembly. The screws were listed on the instructions as being included with the kit. The main grey dash piece looks like the oem trim but it did not snap securely into my dash. I took the plastic clips off of my oem radio and put them on the grey piece included in this kit. The grey dash piece could be pulled out of place with a very light tug on the pocket. Maybe there is a better clip for this. The instructions missed a few key steps. For example, they did not explain that you need to put a bracket on the hazard light piece before screwing it on to the back of the replacement grey dash part. I returned this kit and would not recommend buying it.
Pros:
Cons: plastic replacement mounts flex grey dash piece does not clip onto my 2008 tacoma dash securely instructions were poorly written

Over all it doesn't look bad. The replacement dash panel looks very close to the original. The opening for the double DIN seems a little large though, and the trim ring doesn't fill the gap that's left.

Cons: Instructions could be a little more informative, and the gap around the Kenwood head unit has a little "slop".

The dash kit looks great. My only complaint is the very poorly written instructions. Took a lot of time to figure it out. The face of the head unit sits almost vertical and a little recessed while the trim is sloped like the dash, but it looks like it belongs.

in dash receiver kit
DSV from barberton, ohio on 3/13/2014
2008 Toyota Tacoma
Wiring was fairly easy even for a novice. The kit overall was complete and easy to understand. Two problems that i encountered/am dealing with: The black piece that holds the receiver in the dash has a place to screw it to the dash at the top but no hardware to fasten it. Second and most problematic the "pretty" piece, the cover plate, mine is silver, looks nice but does not snap tightly in place and has to be push in tight to the dash every so often while driving. This is a pain and results in a not very clean finished feel.
Pros:
Cons: As mentioned above the cover plate does not fit tightly in the dash does not snap in place and has to be pushed in tight frequently while driving.

Looks great in the dash, however it feels cheap and flimsy during install. Most reviews state the hazard button opening must be adjusted so it fits. I found this to not be an issue. 2006 Tacoma single DIN install/conversion kit
Pete from Lansdale, PA on 11/14/2013
The parts work and fit into the factory space and fit and finish looks fine. Here are some important considerations you have to keep in mind if you will install the kit yourself. 1. Wiring instructions are fine. 2. Installation instructions are incomplete. Installation takes about 1 1/2 hrs. 3. After removing the cover from the factory receiver, keep the four plastic retaining clips on the factory cover because the retaining clips in the kit will not work. 4. The hazard button cut-out interferes, preventing the button from freely engaging and disengaging. You will need to us an Exacto-knife or box cutting knife to remove material and the button will operate properly.
Pros: Price, appearance, Crutchfield support.
Cons: Rework of some kit parts required but not difficult, supplied retaining clips do work (use the factory clips), instructions lack crucial information to make installation easier.

Installation Tip
MW from Portland, OR on 7/2/2013
2006 Toyota Tacoma
Looks great in my 2006 Tacoma, but: - the plastic tabs that are supposed to snap the closure panel into the truck are too small for secure retention. The equivalent tabs on the factory install are metal with a plastic snap on spacer. I took this plastic spacer off the factory tabs and put them on the new tabs (they fit well). This solved the problem. Over all the new install seamlessly fits the truck

not so great
chris from santee, CA on 4/11/2013
2008 Toyota Tacoma
The face fits the dash opening decently. The color and texture are good.I used this to mount a single din alpine which i love. That's where the problems start. the little tray attaches to the deck and is supposed to center in the main bezel. A lot of my friends have said I am one of the best mechanics and fabricators they know, and after 2 HOURS I could not get these pieces to align correctly.. I got the up and down set, but there is a 1/4 inch gap on the drivers side, and it is sitting under the main bezel on the passenger's side. The emergency flasher button would not fit without filing down the hole. I think i'll be trying out the scosche kit and recommend everyone else do the same.
Pros: main bezel color and texture are a good match to stock.
Cons: main bezel fits in dash, and thats about the only thing that fits right.

Better than I expected
Darren from Kona, HI. on 1/13/2013
2006 Toyota Tacoma
After reading the reviews I was a bit worried that there would be some issues. But after installing the kit everything was perfect. It matches the dash color and holds the receiver with no rattle or wiggle. Like other reviewers said, you may want to use the OEM white clips from the original dash mount but other than that the kit fit perfectly. One thing I noticed was that you do want to center the receiver mount before screwing it down. If it's off center, the dash faceplate can force the receiver to tilt and then you will get some wiggle room and every time you press a button, the edge of the receiver will slip under the dash faceplate. But once it's centered, the receiver doesn't move at all.
Pros: Easy to install, matches dash trim
Cons: none

2007 Prerunner Dash Kit
Kevin Y from Currituck, NC on 11/30/2012
Honestly, after reading the reviews on this site, I was very apprehensive about this kit. However, I couldn't have been more pleased with the results. The fit was a perfect, the appearance was great (looks like factory) and does as advertised. I followed the instructions, and had no problems. The kit is a very secure, tight fit with no movement (I used the supplied white pinch clips). To assure that the receiver (JVC KD-HDR70) did not vibrate/rattle within its sleeve, I used a small piece of rubber between the bottom of the receiver and the top of the storage compartment to act as a shock absorber -works great. Hope this takes away some anxiety.

Could do better
907Bill from Alaska on 11/19/2012
2008 Toyota Tacoma
Where to start. The good first I suppose; The color and texture was pretty close to stock. You probably wouldn't notice otherwise unless you took a second glance. The fitting wasn't so good. I did a double DIN install and the top of the deck was flush but the bottom was sunken into the dash by a long ways. There is a small "filler" piece that is like a trim meant to take up some of this space, although it still left a gap at the bottom. I added some washers to the mounting brackets to kind of kick out the bottom to take up a little bit more space. The brackets I used to attach the deck to the car mounts were the stock, as the included ones attached in no way/shape/form (except for gluing them on there if one was so inclined). The kits was missing the size 6 screws to attach the clock/emergency light button to the dash piece, had to go to store and buy them. Also had to use the stock plastic pinch tabs to put on the new kit so that the front dash piece would stay in. I was pretty disappointed in this kit to summarize it.
Pros: color/texture was a close match
Cons: fitting sucks

Anything that requires the end user to modify it with a dremel tool to fit isn't that great. The clock/hazard panel fitment was not good at all. Also make sure to remove the OEM plastic clips and put them on this unit. No where in the instructions did it mention that.
Pros: Looks OEM, versatile kit (DIN, Double DIN, etc), and free.
Cons: Poor fitment, Poor instructions.

Metra brand is cheap
Dave from Vancouver, WA on 10/26/2012
2005 Toyota Tacoma
The Metra DIN kit is really cheap. Meaning that it is not very good. It's weak and flimsy. Once installed completely, you can see it sort of popping up away from the dash. I used the factory clips instead of the ones in the kit, cause they did a better job of holding it in. I wished they sent a kit by Scosche. At least the Metra they send is free.
Pros: Free from Crutchfield when you order a stereo.
Cons: Very bad quality and fit with my application

Metra 99-8214 Dash Kit
Crutchfield customer from Colorado on 9/26/2012
2005 Toyota Tacoma
Nowhere near the quality I'd expect from Crutchfield. The plastic is thin and flimsy - I expect it to break after a few trips down rough roads. It offers no protection against theft & I doubt a thief would even need tools to pull the unit out. Getting the hazard / clock display out of the factory housing and into the new housing is far more involved than indicated and I'm not sure it's reversible if I need to go back to original. The face doesn't fit well at all and keeps popping out of the mounting holes. There is no way to adjust either the receiver mount or the face. Worst Crutchfield product I've ever seen.

2005 Toyota Tacoma
Installed in my 2005 Tacoma. I don't know if I did it wrong or if I am missing something somewhere but after I got it all assembled and installed it is very loose in my dash. I drove over railroad tracks and the piece just popped out. I am having to wedge thick pieces of paper into the sides to get it to stay put. Without the paper, it doesn't stay flush against the dash.
Pros: Nice color, Not expensive
Cons: Not well designed.

Better than expected
CJJ from Lodi, CA on 7/12/2012
Having read reviews on this and other's like it I was concerned. The molding and finish was less than perfect, had to file a lot of stuff off of it, but it fit perfect. Color was acceptable. My biggest concern about it being loose was unfounded, fit very snug and the head unit looks good and it is stable. I installed a double DIN and it is bolted to the original mount, which I would recommend over a single.
Pros: very easy to use and install
Cons: finish could be better.

Pretty good but leaves me looking for better.
BBYE V8 from St. Louis on 6/20/2012
It looks pretty good in my Tacoma, but the fit around the edges are perfect and the hazard button now sticks a little (it turns on fine, but sticks when trying to turn it off). Nothing a little time with a file won't fix. The instructions for taking apart the factory panel were horrible and unclear.
Pros: Color match.
Cons: Fit, instructions.

Toyota Tacoma Mount Kit
KY_Rob from Northern KY, USA on 6/9/2012
2006 Toyota Tacoma
The kit looks great, for color match and finish. The directions provided were very general, and lacked some critical details. It took some time and common sense to get everything in place. Fit for the hazard light button and OEM clock was less than perfect, and required some hand work for the button to clear properly. Trim panels around the head unit is sloppy, and required significant hand work for a quality install. I would recommend purchasing a higher-quality install kit, as this one is bush-league right out of the box.

Color may have matched, but the color isn't consistant. There are 3 spots on it where it looks like the sprayers didn't cover it completely and the black color of the plastic shows through. Also there was extra plastic from the moulding process (usually called flash) that had to trimmed out of the way, which then left where it was trimmed a line of black where the plastic shows through. Over all in my 2008 Tacoma, it fits nice and tight, but I can easily see where everyone else is concerned about the flimsiness. I think I just got lucky on that part. It doesn't fit the head unit very well and I can see the steel case surrounding the head unit. I tried using the surround that came with the head unit to hide it, but then the silver dash piece wouldn't fit at all.
Pros: free
Cons: see above

It looks great, but it would have been nicer if it was a single unit, rather than 2 parts. Being 2 parts, its never going to look perfect because the two parts dont connect together. Also, the plastic clips for the dash werent as good as the original clips so I had to take the original clips off the stock stereo. Once it was all installed it looks good though.

Took a lot longer to install than it should have. Designed to fit 2 different types of OEM installations, so extra parts included. Deciding which ones were needed and which were not was confusing. Installation sheet's lack of clarity compounded difficulty.
Pros: It fits dash board almost perfectly.
Cons: Constructed of thin gauge plastic. Could not find way of utilizing OEM steel mounting brackets, so there's a lot of flex/ movement.

2006 Toyota Tacoma
Great that it was free from Crutchfield - this kit was anywhere from 10 bucks to 30 bucks depending on the brand you chose and where you got it. I installed my in a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. The color match of the kit to the dash is pretty close but not exact (the difference is not enough to tell without really taking a good look). The kit isnt that sturdy however and the clips which come with it are pretty much useless in a Toyota. I ended up using the clips in the stock kit that I removed from the truck. I had several "fit" issues with my new head unit and this kit until I made the switch in clips. Once I did that everything fell right into place. The install has been solid ever since.
Pros: Free from Crutchfield Look is very close to dash Kit comes with double din and din units which is cool that they give you both
Cons: White clips in the install kit are useless -- go to your dealer and get stock clips or use your old stock clips if you can.

The color and texture match well. The instructions are pretty bad and the fit is not very good. The clips do not stay in well. It does not fall out but it does not hold well. You also have to try to line up the stero with the bracket because the stero bolts to the truck and the kit bolts to the frame. I ended up buying another kit that they color did not match as well but was better designed to fit.
Pros: It was free with the streo and I could have made it work
Cons: Instructions are very poor and it is difficult to install.

TAKE YOUR TIME!!!
JTrim from Indianapolis, IN on 1/4/2012
2008 Toyota Tacoma
This is a great looking product but take your time installing it. The only reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5 was it need to be cleaned up a bit. I had to take the edge of a knife to all of the openings and clean them up from what I assume is overflow from the plastic mold/paint. I also had trouble getting the white clips on the back of the face plate to attach properly. I actually had to sand down the arm the the clips attach to to finally get them to click in. I have seen some reviews where people say the face plate doesnt stay attached to the dash of the truck. I belive the issue is those white clips not catching properly on the face plate. Make SURE you tug on the white clips to make sure they dont pop off the face plate BEFORE installing it into the dash. If they do pull off, sand the arm down and try again. Last but not least, Call crutchfield for help or there is always YOUTUBE...
Pros: Looks and fits great! Wanted a stock look in the truck and I got it!
Cons: Took a lot of time to trim the faceplate so that it had a clean look. Also had to sand down the plastic where the white clips attach to the face plate so they would clip on and not slide off.

Got this mounting kit for my Pioneer 7300BT and it works pretty nicely. This should work well for most installs. After installing it personally, I've noticed several issues. The head unit still has a lot of left to right sway in it. The clips in the top portion are never fully inserted like the bottom clips. When I press the emergency signal button, it gets stuck. Could be because of my lack of experience with installing, so I'm going to try reinstalling and fixing it just in case I missed something.

Fits but could be a little higher quality
toy4runr85 from Phoenix, AZ on 9/23/2011
I installed a Kenwood single-din head unit with this kit. Everything fits, however the finish is a little rough (mold flashing visible for instance). Had to trim the excess plastic, and had to trim the hole for the hazard flasher button. Also, I realize the price would be much more, but if the mount and black plastic surround was aluminum instead of plastic (the factory radio mount is aluminum) it would be MUCH better. I plan to fabricate most of this out of aluminum in the future. Overall it's fine. Works like it should, fits (see above), and the "golf-ball" texture and color matches the OEM interior bits. The little cubby under the radio is handy for a place to store my iPod.

I bought an Alpine radio for my Tacoma. I read the reviews of the installation kit and they were not very positive, but they were true. Crutchfield instructions are great, easy to use with helpful photos. The instructions that came with the kit were not clear what parts were to be used and the pictures were not very helpful. The fit of the face unit was only fair and had to be trimmed. Though I will say that it looks good when it is installed. Better instructions would help, but it you need a face plate to fit, you can make it work.

ian from Seattle, WA on 8/10/2011

There were no directions to install this kit, so my friend and I spent a while trying to figure out how the pieces go together, in what order, and which ones to use. We're both pretty smart, but it was a little frustrating because a simple piece of paper with a diagram would have saved us a good 30 min or more. It would also convince me that I put it together right, which I'm not totally sure about since I can pull out the head unit by grabbing onto the face plate. I don't think that's supposed to happen. Also, the thin frame that goes around the face plate keeps falling off, so I'm constantly pushing the pieces of this kit back together. The gray piece has a few extra millimeters of plastic running into the cutouts that I'll need to trim with a knife so it doesn't look like my car was made in China. Overall, I'm disappointed with the kit, but since it was free, it's really hard to complain. The local big box store wanted to charge me $40 for the same thing, and then $20 for the harness, both of which Crutchfield included at no cost.

The in dash unit supplied by crutchfield are good units. I replaced the silver colored stock stereo in my 2007 Tacoma with a black in dash unit supplied for free with my stereo. I would have given 5 stars if the mounts that hold the sleeve to the truck were more secure and not plastic. This fits perfectly and looks like stock - and it was very easy to install. Only problem was that once installed it is possible for the unit to shift and you have to slide it back in place. I feel like it's pretty easy to steal my stereo with something as weak as this.

Not impressed...
Jim from Tripp, SD on 7/6/2011
I was not impressed with this kit. I felt the instructions and accompanying photos were next to worthless. This leaves one struggling to assemble it and put in in place with little to no help. The support brackets included are lame, at best. They are flimsy and soft plastic...tighten the bolts with care. The opening for the radio leaves much to be desired and the opening for the hazard switch must be trimmed to keep the button from sticking. I was able to get everything in and it looks acceptable, but it needn't have been such a struggle. Clearer instructions and photos would have been of great help.

At the top of this kit, there is a minor gap, maybe just a few millimeters short. The Hazard button will be very tight. I had to trim some of it out with a knife. Also had to do some trimming around the piece that goes around the double din stereo I installed (Jensen VM9324). Overall, it almost looks stock, other than being black instead of silver/grey like the original stereo. Easy instructions, especially for double din stereos.

Installation of this kit was not very hard at all. My only complaint is that the brackets to mount the whole kit to the dash was made out of (in my opinion) very weak plastic. When I was putting the bolts in to make a snug fit it started warping the plastic and it even started to crack a bit with just a tad bit of pressure. Personally I wish the brackets were made out of metal like the stock ones, but other than that my new stereo fit fine and everything went into place.

Bad Fit, TWICE!
Josh from WV on 1/16/2011
Instructions that came with the installation gear were confusing; in fact, the installation gear was horrible! It shipped with missing screws, missing clips, and the faceplate didn't fit the radio very well. Crutchfield sent out a new one, which fixed most of those problems; however it still rubs against my hazard light switch even after I cut out the opening to accommodate it, and I can still see around the receiver into my dash because the faceplate is not a good custom fit for the JVC double DIN radio I ordered. And as one other reviewer mentioned, removing the clock/hazard light assembly from the factory radio was very tedious and the instructions did not go into detail about how to remove it. (It had a little b&w picture of the assembly with an arrow pointing away lol). Once I got it completely installed, it does seem sturdy, and the color isn't a bad match up. I don't, however, like the recessed look of the faceplate where it meets the radio. It definitely doesn't look like the sleek factory radio finish that I was expecting. I think Crutchfield should look for a new manufacturer of installation gear because this quality does not meet the standards I have come to appreciate from Crutchfield!

The install kit worked out great, and looks just as good as the factory mounting did on my '06 Tacoma. A minor nit, and advice would be that some of the plastic molded parts needed to be shaved a bit with a knife to fit properly. But, as long as you don't force anything, it's pretty obvious when a bit of mold overflow is blocking the fit.

Holy cow the instuctions are horrible the kit seems flimsy and might not hold the radio firm but the texture does match the interior very well. Hope a better one comes along SOON.

Ultimately Very Happy
taco05 from NorCal on 5/11/2010
Instructions were very bad. Be prepared to make a few educated guesses because some steps are not there. I was a little worried because of the neg feedback, but I just finished installing the silver unit with JVC stereo in my 05 double cab and I am very happy with finished product. No filing or product modification was necessary. Fit is tight, even, and looks as good or better than I espected. Color and dimples are as nice as OEM. Overall this is my 4th Taco and this was my easiest install. Why did I wait this long!!! I also put in 2, 6x9s in the front doors and 2, 6.5s in the rear doors tonight. Fronts were easy. I used mounts for the 6x9s. Yeah!

Good but could use improvement

The kit was pretty good but I did find that if you can not use some of the stock parts it was flimsy. I have a '06 Tacoma and the main face plate looks pretty good but when I put in my Kenwood DDX-616 there is a some wiggle room between the black insert that goes around the face of the receiver and inside the window cut out of the silver housing. I was hoping for a much tighter fit and a look that made it seem like a stock radio and not one was upgraded.

Metra 99-8214 Dash Kit

Fit works as expected, however it is not as sturdy as the metal brakets that come on the OEM radio. Also, the OEM clock does not sit flush as expected, it sits about 1/8 back.

Glad it was free

I liked the black finish compared to my factory oem silver & I was able to figure out how to make this kit work. Did not use the plastic brackets for it was way too flimsy with the deck's factory sleeve. Too much flex for my liking so I used my factory radio metal brackets though wasn't able to affix the trim ring/single din portion of the kit anywhere. Not to mention the pocket was warped. The setup seems messed up but somehow made it work until I can figure out another way or get a non-warped pocket from crutchfield. Gonna call tomorrow.

It works..

It works for my 2007 Tacoma. Not an ideal fit - some of the metal casing of the stereo is visible at the top if you look clesely, there are gaps on the sides of the trim plate. Generally matched the appearance of the rest of the center console. The molding is very poor quality - I had to grind a few of the parts down to make them fit together (during pre-assembly - all parts from the kit manufacturer!) and there are visible signs of the injection process on the lower front (which fortunately no one will likely ever see). It does work and fits firmly in place despite the disappointing quality.

It's ok

It works, but the finish could look better, looks like someone just took a can of silver spray paint to it, so it doesn't look as nice as the factory facade . The Instructions were terrible, took me an hour to figure out how my single Din radio mounted in the dash. The brackets are plastic and flimsy. I think the SCOSCHE model has metal ones. If I had to do it again I would buy the SCOSCHE kit.
