Works, but...
Crutchfield customer from Fordland, MO on 2/14/2021
2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500
I bought this harness, but the only part I actually needed was the programmer as the harness was already part of the wiring interface that I also purchased. After installation, I tried every programming procedure provided by Axxess and could not get it to work. I called Crutchfield Tech Support and they had it working in less than 1 minute. So while the programmer works, their instructions were worthless for my application.

Not as easy to install as it seems!
Crutchfield customer from Cranford, NJ on 2/9/2021
2012 Honda Civic LX
I have been trying to connect this thing to the steering wheel for more than a week now and it still isn't working properly. Instructions are unclear, resetting it makes it worse, and there still is an issue in the connections.
Pros: Haven't seen any yet!
Cons: Whenever the 3.5mm jack is plugged into the Alpine iLX-W650, it keeps disrupting the radio stations. Setup via computer only available on PC, or else you need to pay an extra $100 for their Hub. Although I reset the device several times, the steering wheel controls aren't connected to the head unit yet.

SWCs again!
Verified Purchase from USA on 1/17/2021
2011 Mazda 2
I installed this SWC adapter in two different cars. The first in early Nov; with a new Sony DSX-B700 (with 3.5mm remote input) in a Mazda, it was easy to wire up and it auto detected in seconds and has worked since. The second was late Nov; with a 5 yr old Kenwood (with single SWC wire) in a R53 MINI, again easy to wire up but had to manually program the device because I did want to buy and "temporarily" use a $20 wire resistor the auto detect sequence calls for with BMW/MINI CAN bus electrical. I just followed the ASWC-1 Changing Radio Type instructions and the device synced up on second try. Only bummer is in both cases, nothing addresses the possible need to purchase a second wiring harness so you don't have to splice into your vehicle's male wiring harness. I purchased a second harness in each case and cannibalized the pins/wiring sets I needed to make my connections. Overall: I'd buy this again
Pros: Manufacturer's instructions make installation simple, Retains settings even after battery disconnection
Cons: Instructions do not list the possible need for second wiring harness

This worked great for my 10th gen civic with basic controls, all of my buttons work after manual programming. Crutchfield reports that this "doesn't fit" my car, but that's a load of crap. The pre-wired connector for the ASWC-1 was perfect, and programming was easy with Axxess' instructions.
Pros: Works 100% as advertised

Do NOT Trust Crutchfield to Properly Wire This For You
Crutchfield customer from Portsmouth, OH on 12/3/2020

Great features, but exceptionally difficult installation for my vehicle. I paid for Crutchfield to prewire everything into one harness. Great idea, but bad implementation. Didn't work when I got it. I spent hours troubleshooting. Finally ended up taking it to a pro and paying for *them* to troubleshoot it. Turns out Crutchfield had miswired the pink wire in the wiring harness. Now it works great, but I'm out even more money.
Pros: Lots of features, programmable functions
Cons: Difficult instructions if it doesn't recognize your vehicle or stereo

Buy a better unit
George from Kitty Hawk, NC on 11/24/2020
2014 Chevrolet Cruze
Absolute trash can of a component, after 2 hours of trying and finally finding the correct instructions on a forum where someone had the same issue I was able to get it to recognize the Chevy Cruze's steering wheel controls. This is after downloading their app and programming it to a Sony head unit as the unit kept going to an alpine. 2 days later it worked fine and now only 2 of the commands work and they are for the wrong functions. So now I get to take the whole dash apart to reset the unit and start over again. Probably will take this out and buy a better unit, something I shouldn't have to do if I paid extra to Crutchfield for the controls to retain this function and pre-wire.
Pros: None
Cons: Works for a 2 days at a time. God awful instructions, none in the package but are on the website.

Installation was simple and straightforward. I was using the ASWC-1 with a Boss head unit which is not directly supported by Axxess The unit was recognizing the steering wheel controls but the ASWC-1 unit was misinterpreting them. I contacted Boss technical support and they solved the issue by resetting the unit. It took two tries but the original steering wheel controls now work as programmed. Very convenient and much safer. I would have deducted a half-star for the lack of support for the Boss unit but after several days of using the controls, I decided the slight inconvenience did not out-weigh the benefit.

This will work on a 2018 civic lx-p. Trust the aswc-1 vehicle specific wiring diagram from Axxess. Be sure to check the vehicle connector on the xsvi-1731-nav harness. For my install it had the white-green and grey-red wire pins switched. I had to tear apart the 1731 harness and cross the wires for the steering wheel controls to communicate. So it was mainly a 1731 issue. It was nice to be able to install this module without having to touch or splice any vehicle wiring if used with the 1731 harness. I had to manual program the radio brand. Watching the Axxess video aided in getting that to work. It's a lot easier to watch someone do it in real time than just reading a list of steps.
Pros: It does actually work!
Cons: not a simple plug n play for me Auto programming didn't work Programming with led flashes was confusing at first until I found and watched a video

This worked perfectly for my 2017 Sentra. The general instructions in the package were a bit vague, but the vehicle-specific instructions available from the Axxess website were easy to follow. I was able to install this and set it up in less than 30 minutes. The only reason I gave four stars instead of five stars is because the remapping and assigning long press functions are a bit cumbersome. Overall, though, this is an excellent product, and I have no major complaints.
Pros: Easy to install, works with many vehicles, auto-detects your receiver
Cons: Assigning long press functions is cumbersome.

I got my steering wheel controls working, but it was a challenge. Turns out I can't read instructions. Or more specifically, the instructions are written in paragraph format rather than in a table or bullet points, so it's easy to miss stuff. So I accidentally missed one connection, which caused me some troubleshooting that might have been avoided if the instructions were easier to follow. The instructions were correct, but they could have been written and formatted more clearly. The biggest recommendation: Re-read each step very carefully.

Did not work on Honda Civic 2013
Guest from Winnipeg, MB on 9/28/2020
2013 Honda Civic EX
I've purchased this controls adapter for my Honda Civic 2013 with Pioneer stereo unit. Downloaded installation instructions from Axxess website which were written for Civic 2013. Read them a couple of times and started installation. It was pretty straight forward, did everything according to the instruction, connected to exact wires... result - no buttons working. Did reset, was trying to update the firmware which was the latest already, self-test passed well with no issue, however adapter does not recognize steering wheel buttons. I spend long hours trying to make it work - no luck. Gave a call to Crutchfield service and was said that I got a bad adapter and can get a new one. I was not going to have a free time to spend on re-installation, so ended up just to return adapter. Will try to install it once more time later, next year. No complaints on Crutchfield, customer service is fantastic, but Axxess needs to improve their product for sure.
Pros: Hope given to retain the steering wheel buttons
Cons: Did not work on my Honda Civic 2013. Made everything as per instructions provided, checked connections - no help.

Just get it. You'll be happy you did
Andrew from Boulder, CO on 9/28/2020
Super easy to install. You'll only need the power, ground, and one of the other wires depending on your vehicle. I bundled the rest of them and stuffed them away. I decided to keep the extras in case I change cars and want to use this again. Just follow the Crutchfield-provided instructions for connecting to the harnesses of the radio and car. You'll need to go to Axxess's website to find what the other wire you'll need is. i used a posi-tap to connect to the car's wiring and it worked perfectly. One nice thing is that it auto-detected my car's system so it automatically worked. Not sure if that's the case for all cars.
Pros: Painless to add to install
Cons: None

Don't try figuring this out using your cell phone...well, not for me anyway. Doesn't come adequate instructions for the dozen wires and only using three of them. Called Crutchfield support, but had to wait 30 minutes for a call back. During that time I got on my PC and visited Axxess's website for vehicle specific instructions. By the time CF called back I had figured it out and used the called as verification. For my application- red & black connected as expected, but vehicle specific required gray w/red tapped into pin 18 of factory harness. You'd think that at this point, for a typical Ford application, that the Metra adapter would have a pin 18 wire that is used for steering wheel controls. I mean, are there that many people forgoing their steering wheel controls for an item at this price?
Pros: works as advertised setup was automatic- didn't have to do anything
Cons: having to visit website for vehicle specific instructions took some time while in the middle of soldering everything together

Would be nice if only the instructions came with it. Having to chase links on their web site given the cost of this, good profit margins. Wire as directed, double checked and a second set of eyes on, unit is not functional. Tested all continuity, no open connections. Glad radio came with remote.
Pros: It plugs into the controller nicely
Cons: A lot of wasted wires only used 4 for this application and the instruction clarity needs work, having to cut into a wire on vehicle side of radio plug, and on the radio side of harness, why have a disconnect plug! Steering wheel controls on this Honda are on a separate connector from main radio plug from factory and Axxess isn't connecting to those?

I dont know how well this work with other cars, but it certainly doesn't work too well with my Subaru Impreza 2015 and Sony XAV-ax 5500. First this unit refuses to configure itself automatically so we had to set up everything manually, second even if we set up everything manually, the answer and decline phone call buttons still don't work, I'm not sure if ax5500 is too new or it simply doesn't work well with Subaru Impreza 2015, if whoever reading this review is considering buying ax-5500 with this control unit and happened to own a Subaru Impreza 2015, better think twice before placing your order
Pros: Neat appearance, with LED indicator to help you set up steering wheel control more easily
Cons: The overall installation is some what confusing and instruction is not really that helpful if you don't have any experience with installing a receiver

My steering wheel controls work after installing a new head unit in my 2006 Miata. On my first install attempt, it didn't work. I called Axxess' tech support, and after about 15 minutes on hold the tech (who was a bit gruff) was able to figure out my problem and explain it to me. I don't blame him for being gruff - I was not really getting what he said. Overall, great product and good company.
Pros: - It works. My steering wheel controls work after replacing my radio - Their web site has a lot of instructions on how to install it in general, and they have vehicle-specific instructions as well
Cons: - It's still a bit confusing to install (but not NEARLY as hard as trying to do it without the adapter, which would have been impossible.

Worked fine but did need to call for help with installation. My Boss radio was not listed in the instructions as a radio manufacturer for syncing. It did sync just fine though. Also, if being used in conjunction with the stereo wiring harness all you need to do is plug in the box. The wires aren't needed at all. The instructions didn't explain this. For these 2 reasons the install wasn't as easy for us as it really ended up being once we got on the phone with Crutchfield support. Works to a certain degree but not total integration. This device allows me to use the steering wheel volume, mode, and mute but not to change the songs or skip. Also for some reason the volume knob which is normally used to change selections within the menu becomes inoperable and you must use the vol button on the steering wheel to scroll through the menu. Yes the connections are correct per the axxess website and you can change inputs via the manual programming.
Pros: easy to install and works, kind of.
Cons: Can be difficult for shade tree mechanic but not impossible. Directions only website not very clear.

When I installed mine, it seemed to detect the radio fine but buttons weren't right. After triple checking my work, I called support who conceded "sometimes there Subarus want to be manually programmed." He walked my through the process on the phone, and 10 minutes later everything worked. Awesome product. I'd put off swapping my deck for a long time because I didn't want to lose functionality, super happy I did it.
Pros: All of my steering buttons work just like new.
Cons: You're left on your own connecting to the factory harness. I used Dupont wires to avoid modifying the harness. Mine wouldn't auto-program to the car so installation took longer than anticipated.

Didn't automatically recognize everything the first attempt but after a reset and a second attempt it was flawless! Here are two valuable pieces of information for a 2012 Civic install using this device. First you don't lose the ability to set the factory clock. On the 2012 model there is also a mechanical dial on the dash that allows the clock to be set. You only lose the ability to set the clock using the iMid controls. Second you do not lose the steering wheel phone/voice activation buttons. The grey/blue wire needs to be extended to reach the Honda factory Bluetooth unit behind the glove box. You disconnect the 32 pin factory plug to the factory Bluetooth unit and pigtail the grey/blue wire to pin 15, this will give you functionality of the phone/voice buttons.
Pros: Easy install Works well

Worked, and auto detected my system. Had to create a chassis ground. Directions are short simple and very easily misunderstood. :)
Pros: Works as designed
Cons: The first wire they tell you to connect too, they also say they both must be grounded. So not only are you splicing into the factory wire they both must be grounded. (which I initially missed) and spent 20 minutes trying to figure out why it had not been working. :)

Works with 2009 Pontiac Vibe GT with factory Monsoon sound system and Sony XAV-AX1000. The Sony uses the 3.5mm jack from the ASWC-1 which makes it easy to connect the two devices. I did not need to "Hold Volume Up on the steering wheel" for Programming as the instructions suggested - the ASWC-1 auto-detected my vehicle and radio. For 2009 Pontiac Vibe GT, make sure you connect the black wire of the ASWC-1 and the light blue wire (pin 10 of the vehicle factory harness) to Chassis Ground. This is in the instructions, but easy to skip over as they are included on the same step and it will not work without pin 10 wired to Chassis Ground.
Pros: Straightforward installation Auto-Detection of Sony Radio
Cons: Somewhat tricky to splice into vehicle's factory harness (not much space)

2015 Nissan Frontier but go with iDataLink instead!!
Owen from BRACEY, VA on 6/19/2020

Did this work? Yes, once it finally got connected properly it did. However, I have so many issues with this product and Metra in general. The poor rating is for a complete lack of instructions and documentation. This is typical Metra. Half of the time their products don't seem to work and when they do you've just about pulled out your hair trying to decipher what in the, um, "world" the directions that weren't in the box are trying to say. A little background. I have installed probably 10+ stereo systems in vehicles over the years, starting in 1995. I have a degree in IT and business management. I'm not a novice, have experience, and I'm not stupid. So no directions in the box? Go to the website. Then you'll need to surf their poorly planned website and figure out which of a couple install documents fits your vehicle and product. Not ideal. Then Metra gives pin numbers on the harness and not the color of the wire. It took me forever to figure out that the harness they were showing, with the connector clip on top, was backwards. I only found this out by calling Crutchfield and having one of their techs give me the actual wire colors. Then the Posi connector wouldn't make a connection with the factory wire because I think the wire was just too small but that's on Posi. I ended up having to splice directly into the factory harness. Not happy about that. This wasn't my first bad experience with Metra. If you can, go with iDatalink
Pros: It did finally work after sooo much cussing and frustration.
Cons: Directions not actually included. Nonsensical directions. Incorrect or made-by-dummy directions. Poor website. Pin numbers instead of color codes. Can't be programmed via cpu connection and download like iDataLink. Splicing instead of harness adapters like, you guessed it, iDataLink.

Great system for my KEN wood , but had some problems on fine details. Had to get this due too 2 Crux systems not working. But please follow directions, only need four wires from unit. But the ground needs to ground to a metal surface and also the one from factory harness that it tells you. On my car was yellow.
Pros: Great system. Loaded the correct code for car and works great after I fixed the 2 grounds to a hard mount surface and that was on the stereo support bracket.
Cons: You need to follow the direction and first find them on there website and do what they say. Don't uses the stereo ground- you have to ground 2 wires ; 1 from the unit black wire and 1 off the factory harness that was a yellow. Then it will work.

Through a lot of trials and tests this unit doesn't seem to function properly almost half of the time with my Vehicle and stereo. Works well eventually
Crutchfield customer from Knoxville, MD on 6/1/2020
I bought this in conjunction with the Metra GM Harness 70-1858 for my 02 Pontiac Grand Prix. In order to make the ASWC work I needed to jump a wire to pin 14. Unfortunately, Metra doesn't put a wire in the #14 pin slot. I had to hack the wire on the factory harness. What's the point of a harness adapter if I have to hack my harness anyways? I got the two wired together by Crutchfield (ReadyHarness). Unfortunately, Crutchfield didn't include instructions to jump around the Ready Harness. I wasted a significant amount of time figuring this out. Crutchfield should demand more from themselves and their suppliers!
Pros: Once you get it installed and programmed it works well.
Cons: Cheap design of Metra Harness used with this product on GM vehicles will cause you frustration.

Works fine, instructions not the most intuitive, extra adapter needed.
Casey from KANSAS CITY, KS on 5/31/2020
2010 Toyota Tacoma
The instructions were not the most intuitive, especially with an additional adapter required (Metra #8114). It all just contributed to the rats best of wires behind the reciever, but in the end, works as needed. No programming was required for my application, it just worked when plugged-in. In the end, steering wheel controls for 2010 Tacoma work with Kenwood KIV-700.
Pros: Worked fine when plugged-in, no additional programming required.
Cons: Instructions not the most intuitive. Additional adapter required.

Crutchfield customer from Columbia City, OR on 4/21/2020
2005 Volkswagen Passat
This worked great for my 2005 VW Passat with Monsoon. There were a few wires that go unused since this is a universal type of product. I was sure to block those off and bundle with heat shrink. The little black box programmed automatically and the two wires was all it needed for the steering wheel volume and track skip control. The box was *almost* too bulky along with all the aftermarket harness wires to smoosh everything into the dash, but it fit. The female 1/8" adapter was not used for my application since my Pioneer head unit had a "WR" connection.
Pros: Easy to program
Cons: black box is a little bulky
