Keep your Toyota's USB port working

Metra's AX-TOYUSB cable allows you to keep the factory USB port in your Toyota when you install a new car stereo. One end of the cable connects to the 4-pin proprietary plug just behind the USB port on your Toyota's console, while the other end plugs into the USB port on the back of your new car stereo. You must install a car stereo with a rear USB port. Warranty: 60 days.

Metra AX-TOYUSB USB Port Cable

2012 Toyota Prius

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

for my 2012 prius, the factory USB port was too slow to charge phone and connect to CarPlay. It kept glitching, so I just used the USB that came with the head unit.

Pros: Quick easy returns through Crutchfield

Cons: Could not use. Factory USB was too slow.

Allowed me to retain the factory USB port (but NOT the factory AUX in the same plug). Much better option than having a loose female USB hanging in your glove compartment.

Not listed as compatible with my 2013 Highlander with navigation; however, it did fit. This fits between the aftermarket head unit's USB port and the OEM USB cable. It does NOT plug into the back of the OEM USB port. It charges the phone and works with Apple CarPlay on a Kenwood DNX-693S. Make sure you plug it into the iPod/iPhone USB plug, rather than the plain USB plug.

USB adapter

Peter from Maryland on 7/19/2017

This didn't work out for me. here's why. The Google Pixel XL uses USB-C. The "C" has much more stringent connection requirements. The Pioneer AVH-4200NEX radio with Android Auto would not connect until I connected directly to the back of the head unit. I ended up purchasing a dual USB cable/mount which worked great!

Works OK, but be aware, if you are expecting to be able to use CarPpay or Android Auto, this adapter will not work. It only provides 4 wires to the USB which will only get you power and read your phone like a USB drive. I ended up buying a flush mount USB kit and plugged it into the radio for full USB support

Pros: plug and play

Cons: no CarPlay or Android Auto support

WARNING: Be sure you pay attention to which of the 2 USB ports on the Pioneer you need to plug this into based on if you have android or apple. Works perfectly if you have selected your vehicle appropriately. Just get it. I am not sure what happened with the Tundra guy, I have a non-JBL, non-nav 2012 Camry and it is extremely likely that the dash wiring is very similar.

Pros: Plug in both ends = works perfectly!

Not for a 2012 Toyota Tundra SR5

Crutchfield customer from Anaheim, CA on 5/10/2015

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This may work with other models but not on my truck which is a 2012 Toyota Tundra SR5 that came with a non-JBL, non-Nav radio. I installed a Pioneer AVIC-7000 NEX using the main interface which was easy but I gave up using this piece after spending a long time figuring out which connector it should match with (on the truck side, the radio side is easy) even after reading many forum threads. This WILL NOT make the factory USB (and the Aux) on the dash work.

Pros: None for my purpose

Cons: Unuseable for me.

Q
Why does the description state "The AX-TOYUSB is not compatible with CarPlay or Android Auto". Is this just not merely an extension of the USB port on the radio ? What do I need to get Android auto to work on my Galaxy S5 extended from an NEX4200 to the Toyota factory jack then ?

This adapter was shipped with the install kit for my 2013 RAV4. It doesn't work because the port in my car is a combination USB with AUX port. The new head unit does not have AUX and can't understand the input from the built-in combination port. I replaced the built in combination port with an aftermarket USB only port that fits my dash and connects to the extension USB cables on the head unit, bypassing the car's wiring. Works fine now.
[ Andrea  Jan 10, 2019 ]
A
Works fine on my ILX-F309
[ Adam  Mar 27, 2018 ]
A
I don't know why it would say that. I have an NEX6000 which does not support Android Auto, so I don't know much about it. I thought that adapter was just a USB extension cable, so not sure why it would not work. I assume it depends on whether the head unit supports the cable and Android Auto, but just guessing.

Q
Will this work on a 2015 subaru BRZ? i tried a PAC USB-SB1 which was for 2013 and up BRZ but the connector was too small.
[ Beechnut87  Mar 25, 2016 ]

A
No, it does not work in a BRZ, FR-S, or a GT-86. the oem jack on the back of the usb/aux plug is a male jack and this cable is a male connector. Further more, the oem usb/aux jack requires a plug with both the usb and the aux in one and cannot be modified to fit this particular adaptor. you will either need to find a proper version of the adaptor or completely change out the oem usb/aux plugs all together. (or start splicing wires)

What this does is allows you to retain your stock usb port on a aftermarket radio one end goes to stock harness and the usb end in the aftermarkets usb port

This worked on my 2012 Rav4 just fine, and allowed me to use the built in USB port on the center console with an aftermarket radio
[ Brandon  Jan 02, 2015 ]

Not sure. I used it on my 2014 Tacoma and it did connect fine to the oem usb/aux port. My Tacoma did not have a JBL sound system.

Q
Does this part connect thru the OEM in-dash USB/AUX connector?
[ Jim  Dec 30, 2014 ]

A
Yes--I have a 2013 Toyota Tacoma. This cable connects through the OEM in-dash USB/AUX. I keep a USB-Thunderbolt cable plugged in for my iPhone. Charges and plays music well. I got an Alpine bluetooth deck unit as well. The wire harness for the Toyota steering wheel controls works as advertised. I have no issues. The only thing I've noticed is that the audio quality is better (and louder) when I connect through the USB/AUX cable, rather than bluetooth. Hope this helps.

A
Yes, this is the wiring harness adapter to allow use of the dashboard USB AUX. I used it when installing the aftermarket stereo in my 2013 Tacoma.
[ edward  Jan 02, 2015 ]
A
Yes. I plugged it directly in to existing factory plug. Works great!
[ RYAN D  Jan 02, 2015 ]
A
It connects to the wiring behind the radio and goes to the female USB connector in the dash. This way you can plug this into the back of a radio that has a back USB port and then utilize the in-dash (OEM) female USB outlet with your media devices. Hope this helps.
[ JASON  Jan 02, 2015 ]
A
Yes it connects to the factory USB input, but the Aux input won't be,
[ Bill  Jan 02, 2015 ]
A
