Our take on the Pioneer MVH-1400NEX

It's hard to call Apple CarPlay™ just a feature when it does so much. With Pioneer's MVH-1400NEX digital multimedia receiver installed in my dash, I could keep in touch with the outside world with voice commands and an occasional touch of my finger. But this Pioneer offers so much more, from high-res FLAC playback to streaming via Bluetooth® to SiriusXM compatibility. And a 13-band EQ and expansive sound-shaping tools make this great receiver an essential for the music lover.

Talk hands-free and stream audio wirelessly with Bluetooth

Naturally, this receiver has built-in Bluetooth so you can wirelessly stream music or make hands-free calls, accessing your phone book from the touchscreen. With Siri Eyes Free on your iPhone, just touch a button and you can listen to and send text messages, place calls, and ask questions, all without taking your eyes off the road.

It's all about A/V

This receiver covers the bases with an aux input and rear USB input. The MVH-1400NEX supports FLAC file playback for true high-resolution music — up to 192kHz/24 bit. With a USB connection to your smartphone, you'll get a fuller in-dash experience using Pandora® and Spotify® Internet radio services. And for long drives, you can add a SiriusXM tuner for access to some truly awesome satellite radio stations that'll hang with you from coast to coast. Add a rear-view camera and you'll get a better view in crowded parking lots or backing out of your garage.

Give your drive a vibe with MIXTRAX

Pioneer's exclusive MIXTRAX feature adds a light show on your touchscreen as you're listening to your favorite playlists and music files. A pulsating multi-color display synchronizes with your tunes, plus DJ-style audio transitions from song to song keep the party going on fun nights out.

Stellar sound quality you'll love

Pioneer's powerful amplifier, supported by a versatile 13-band equalizer, tames the rough spots in your car's acoustics. If you're looking for a little more punch, connect an amp or powered sub to the three sets of 4-volt preamp outputs and kick things up a notch.

iDatalink Maestro lets you keep your factory extras

Pioneer's MVH-1400NEX offers compatibility you won't find in many other aftermarket radios, thanks to the iDatalink Maestro module (not included). In a wide selection of vehicles, this module lets you keep factory features that you'd otherwise lose when you install a new radio. You'll also be able to check out engine performance data and other vehicle info on the Pioneer's screen. Once you've identified your vehicle, you'll see the iDatalink module offered on the way to the Shopping Cart if it's compatible.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then  program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This head unit made the Kia Soul a new car all over again. It brought the best of today's tech into an already fun car. It also was extremely easy to setup and install with the guides and customer support found here at crutchfield. Integrating it with the factory amp, actually woke up this system! It sounds like a whole new stereo, the factory radio never sounded this good!!

Pros: Easy to install, great to use, and sounds amazing !!!!

    Cons: None

Great stereo! The clean lines make me wonder why Pioneer doesn't design all of their head units to look this great. Installation was a breeze and the sound quality is night and day compared to my old stock head unit.

This thing is awesome! My only complaint would be the manual is a disaster. I am so glad that I purchased it from Crutchfield so they could explain the wire diagram. I also appreciated the install kit, made it a breeze to install. Cost was not even an issue and I didn't shop around, because, how do you put a price on having tech support at your fingertips. That adds value!

Pros: Great sound and power. Intuitive to use and looks great.

Cons: That manual needs work, you will need to call into tech support and have them decipher the wiring diagram.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I agonized over all the choices for a radio to fit my 2004 F250 but in the end it came down to Apple CarPlay and the touchscreen so I could use my phone for NAV. I love this radio but the "modifications" scared me. 1. There is a "modification" warning that you have to remove the "entire dash" to remove the new radio once installed. They should say "dash facia" because in reality it's trim around instrument cluster and radio can be removed in 15 minutes or less. 2. Don't use the round head screws that come with the radio to attach the Metra side brackets. They stick out too much and will interfere with the install. Use the flat head screws, three on each side and make them snug and don't over tighten as they will distort the plastic of the Metra brackets. Be sure and "justify" flush the Metra bracket with the top edge of the radio chassis so there will be about an 1/8' overhang on the bottom where the Metra filler strip will go as the last step. 3. I looked at several YouTube videos of people "modifying the dash" using drills, files, Dremel, etc. The finished product didn't look very good in my opinion. So, after I removed the old radio, I removed the dash facia to enlarge the opening on the workbench. I did all the cutting from the backside with a Fien oscillating saw (Rockwell Sonicrafter) with a "push cut" blade on the slowest speed to not melt the plastic. Scribe lines along the back for guidance and then clean up with bastard file. Then test fit th

Pros: Clean look, touch screen, good sound, and CarPlay make this head unit a great value. Crutchfield staff are helpful when you need help - as always.

Cons: To install this double DIN in the F250 "correctly", it takes some time to do a clean looking job. The instructions are good but not great.

I love having apple CarPlay and this deck works great. Thanks to Crutchfield for getting everything I needed to hook it up to my 2012 FJ cruiser and keep my steering wheel controls. I even get info from my truck like tire pressure and internal temperature with the OBD cable. It makes my truck feel much more modern. The only thing I'm missing is a quick pause button on the side apposed to using the touch screen.

Pros: Applecarplay Sleek Good price for features

Great radio! Meets all expectations. Only very minor thing I would change if I had to give feedback is to have a Volume knob instead of touch button. This is only because previous radio had and it is a habit pattern thing.

Pros: Great sound, easy to install, Apple Carplay, can use backup camera. Descent price.

Cons: Volume knob instead of push button, but this is a minor personal preference

Bought the install kit with the 1400NEX. Very straight forward for the most part. Flashing the Maestro took a couple tries because I didn't learn that it doesn't work with Microsoft Edge and had to use IE. FYI if you do get the Maestro, it cannot be programmed using apple products. The 1400NEX is a great unit with great sound and looks great with the install kit.

Pros: Great sound Nice menu straight forward install.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the Pioneer MVH-1400NEX for my 2011 Chevy Suburban because I wanted to upgrade the standard radio and add Apple CarPlay. I ordered the MVH-1400NEX with the pre-assembled wiring harness option from Crutchfield. This made the installation much easier and a nice option. One issue I did was not expecting was having to program the Maestro Rr module that comes with the harness to integrate all the Chevy OEM equipment to work with the MVH-1400NEX. It would be nice if it could be pre-programmed from Crutchfield with the options I selected on the order form as part of the wiring harness pre-assembly charge. Since I have all Apple computers, and had to install a Windows virtual machine on my Macbook Pro in order to install the driver through Internet Explorer to program it. After that, the installation was easy. I checked out a youtube video on how to take the old radio out which was a great help. It looks awesome and sounds great while also incorporating all of my Chevy Suburban OEM buttons sensors etc... The Apple Play works great too!

Fantastic unit. I bought it for Apple CarPlay, but even the radio sound is a massive improvement from my factory radio. The Waze integration is terrific, and I love all the hands free controls for phone and text. I'm still discovering its capabilities (not everything is documented in the manual). For example, I just discovered that a long press on the "Mode" button on my Honda Pilot's steering controls activates Siri (yay!!). Figuring it all, but loving what I've already found.

Great sound from this unit......However this thing is an ergonomic disaster. just to change volume you have to touch + and - and then you go to another area on screen. It's worse than texting and driving to use this unit. Way too much happening on the screen; even in radio mode. Customer service was great and took it back....and then bought Sony and is just easier to use.

    2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fits perfectly in a Toyota FJ Cruiser. Functions are fairly easy to use and the screen is very responsive to touch. I would like it to auto play bluetooth or carplay once the car starts though instead of of having press play every time the car is turned on. It transfers apple musics music artwork via bluetooth unlike other models so that is cool plus. I'd also prefer it to play using apple carplay instead of the ipod feature at times when it is plugged in. I obviously would prefer it to go directly to apple car play instead of me having to navigate and selecting carplay myself. Otherwise it is a great stereo deck. I am enjoying it.

Pros: Interface is very responsive Clean OEM look

Cons: Does not play automatically when the car starts. Uses ipod feature at times instead of directly going to apple car play when connected.

Great stereo. Looks great in dash after having to replace a 4 year old factory system with navigation that died. Toyota was not willing to do anything and wanted $5000 to replace. $1500 for refurbished. This system looks and works great. Does everything I need it to do. I am extremely happy with this model.

Cons: None that I have found

    2011 Ford F-250
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very sleek unit. Sounds great and has no buttons! I can pretend my F250 is a Tesla. First off, getting this as a kit from Crutchfield with a OEM tailgate handle back up camera, the datalink module, ford integration adaptor, dash bracket kit, and some tools was Brilliant! There tech support made a possible nightmare a pleasure. Now about the Head Unit. With all the integration stuff from the kit, I am able to use most of the steering wheel controls and built in Ford Sync features as before. I bought this for CarPlay and it works, but you must add the aftermarket microphone to use any iPhone audio input (Siri) etc. You must also use the USB port on the back of the unit to use CarPlay, it will not route through the sync system. That means you must leave a usb wire dangling out some random spot or get a usb plug that you can put in place of a cigarette lighter. I am trying this with one from Crutchfield (on order) I am used to Retina displays and the CarPlay image quality on this is quite low, but I can get over that. The back up camera comes on seamlessly when I throw it in reverse! The display dims when I use my lights and is nice at night, but I run my lights in the day and the screen is very dim (also back up display useless with lights on in day). The unit has a display feature that blacks out the whole screen with one touch which is great at night. I still have to talk to tech support to see about some of the stuff I would like, but this is a sweet unit.

    Pros: Sleek touch screen

Cons: screen resolution could be better

The good: it plays music The bad: oh boy! The bad! -The "auto-dim" function is not auto and does not dim. -The time of day dim does not work either. -There are TWO iPhone music apps with different functions. The issue with this is sometimes you can't get to the one that lets you "love" music. Also, the primary music app, after playing the first song, always shows the previous songs album art. -Sometimes when pressing the "switch" button, the display turns off.

    Pros: Plays music

    Cons: TNTC

Easy install, instructions were very helpful. Sounds fine, wouldn't give it a great. Don't care for the volume control buttons. Too small. Disappointed in the album artwork display. Artwork doesn't match the song playing. Artwork lags a song behind. Called Pioneer about it. They said it's a known issue. Working on solution. 4 months have passed no word on a solution yet. Guess it's mine now.

    Pros: Easy install. Sounds fine

Cons: Controls too small. Artwork display doesn't match song being played

When connected for CarPlay, the audio skips intermittently every single time I use the head unit. The unit was swapped, but both units exhibited the same problem, even with different USB cables. It's a very irritating issue. Otherwise it's a solid unit. Debating on whether I should just return it and go with a different brand.

Pros: Sound quality and options. Provides 7.5 watts to charge the phone.

Cons: Audio always skipping in CarPlay.

Lots of features, easy to install, and looks nice. The interface is horrible which is not unique to this type of device. There is no logic to the controls. Things that are barely relevant are on the front screen and things that are important are buried deep in settings menus. The volume buttons should be knobs. But, as they are screen buttons, they are way too small to confidently hit while driving without looking.

Pros: Quite capable from a feature standpoint No problems installing Excellent price

Absolutely thrilled with the Unit. Crystal clear backup camera display, lots of functions even without the others available on similar units, and very easy to use and install. I also got the steering wheel controls and had some questions, and the people on the phone were amazing! Knew exactly what I was talking about and quickly answered it perfectly. Absolutely would recommend this and Crutchfield to anyone!

This thing is great! Now, when I say that I mean it works well. Installation was a challenge to say the least. Okay, I struggled a lot to get the stereo working with the camera. This is not a knock on the product, but rather attesting to the reality that I was in over my head. So, you ask... did he finish the job? Yes, yes I proudly did finish the job. However, not on my own. I called tech support so often that they knew me by name. In fact, we will probably be taking turns hosting each other at Thanksgiving, exchanging Christmas gifts, and I cannot wait for the Christmas letter updates. So, yeah, we talked a lot.... its not good when they answer the phone and say, "Hey Paul...." Seriously, they did a GREAT JOB! I have a feeling that many may have retired after my "stereo event", but nevertheless they did a great job of helping me out. I will say that I LOVE Apple CarPlay. In fact, my wife and I love it so much that our newer and nicer van is starting to get jealous of my older and boo booed pickemup.

Pros: - Apple CarPlay .... Yes, I love the Apple Compound with the perfectly chilled Kool-Aid. - Touch Screen is AWESOME! - Sound is Great! - Did I mention Apple Car Play?

Cons: - No Apple Kool-Aid dispenser - does not have Steve Job's perfect Kool-Aid recipe built into the stereo (Tried to find it, but not there... may have voided a warranty.... Just kidding!) - it does not plug my phone in for me - it's making me want to upgrade our head unit in our van

I had this unit installed by a pro so I cannot speak to the ease of installation but I can speak to the improvement over the factory premium audio head unit in my 07 car. The amp and speakers in my car are really nice but the head unit that i had wasn't even close to this one. Loving Apple Play and App Radio. Make sure to spend the extra $$$ on the installation kit as my installer said it was super smooth to install with the supplied wiring and faceplate. I honestly couldn't be happier. Kinda nice to say "Siri, play Stan Kenton" and have the music start. Great customer service from Crutchfield. Keeping all of the steering wheel controls and adding the OBD interface is GREAT.

For the price, this u it is awesome! Who needs a CD player in 2018? Not me... who needs an expensive in dash GPS unit that is prone to failure when even the auto manufacturers are getting rid of them for something like this unit. Being brutally honest though, the program that comes on this unit is pretty crappy and tough to navigate. However the Apple CarPlay is fantastic, bright, and simple.

Pros: Price, features, name brand, good sound quality and EQ adjustability. Fit and finish.

Cons: No front mounted AUX or USB plug ins. They are mounted on back of unit. Having to run one wire to my parking brake wiring. If you don't run this wire some features become not available, such as EQ...

The nice thing about buying from Crutchfield is that they will tell you if it fits your car and what you'll need to make it look like a clean install. So the worry is put to rest. This is a great receiver for the price. Seems like the only capacitive touch screen on the market from what I've seen. Which is the reason why I bought this one. Everything works very well but be aware that the screen size is rather small. This unit also lacks some of the features of higher end NEX. For instance there are no customizable backup guides. You must purchase a camera with this overlaid if you want this feature. It also does not support Android auto. Appradio is essentially worthless. Over all this is a great unit that sounds incredible. If you have an iPhone this is a sound investment.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really wanted to love this, but I cannot agree with all of the 5 start reviews. It is a great price for a good name unit with CarPlay, and I chose this unit over the 1440 because this one has a capacitive screen and the 1440 has a resistive screen. However, this screen doesn't support multi-touch, so I'm disappointed about that. I want to pinch to zoom in the maps and that doesn't work. The Pioneer app is klunky. I did get Waze to work which I greatly prefer over Apple maps, but you're either in CarPlay or your in the Pioneer App so to use Waze, you lose all of the CarPlay features. Maybe Waze support will be added to CarPlay at some point in the future. It boots pretty quick (6-8 seconds) and the reverse camera comes on and overrides intro/warning screen so you don't have to wait or tap that. It's a nice clean look in my dash ('08 Chevy Avalanche). The sound is good and I like the steering wheel controls also. Hopefully once I get used to navigating around I'll enjoy it more. I'm not unhappy, just not blown away.

Pros: -Fast boot -CarPlay -Good sound

Cons: -AppRadio needs work -CarPlay only supports Apple maps

Pros: Everything! Sounds amazing ! Looks beautiful and does exactly what's it's designed to do.

Fantastic headunit, brings my 99 Acura up to date with tech. Love the fully flat face, makes it easier to just wipe clean. Full of features, easy to use. The instructions dont really give much info though. I had no problem hooking up to bluetooth on a test run before full install, but when I completed the install, I could not get it to hook up. And the instructions do not offer detail on pairing. I finally figured to 'forget device' from phone, then it went and auto paired by itself. Yes you do need to connect by wife for carplay features, but you figure, those features drain your phone battery anyway, so why not connect and charge at the same time? Great unit over all. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this for putting Apple CarPlan in my 2011 Toyota Tundra. Works ok, but not great, and doesn't look as clean as I would expect. I want to love this so bad but there are 3 major issues. 1. SCREEN QUALITY POOR: The quality of the display is not super crisp, it looks grainy. Apple has trained customers to expect a crisp display on an iPhone or Mac. Pioneer's displays are just not up to the same quality. The touch is very responsive, however. It is pretty sweet having CarPlay in my truck! 2. CARPLAY DROPS FROM IPHONE: the unit drops the connection to the iPhone pretty regularly when in the middle of use and I have to unplug the lightening cable and replug it into the phone which is annoying. I have the latest iPhone X and this is unacceptable. 3. DARK SCREEN UNTIL YOU MAKE 3 TAPS: When the unit first powers on, the screen is really dark and you can't see it. So you have to tap a button on the unit, then tap another button to brighten the screen, then tap another button to get back into start up the car. It doesn't remember to stay bright. So that's 3 unneccessary taps every time you start up the car which is annoying. I give it 2 stars since it drops the connection - you have one job which is the make CarPlay work and the fact that it drops regularly is annoying!

Pros: Pretty sweet to have Apple CarPlay in my truck

Cons: 1. Poor screen quality 2. CarPlay drops regulary from iPhone 3. Dark screen requires 3 taps everytime you start up the car

    Great Unit at reasonable price

Very nice head unit with great features for a reasonable price.

Pros: Great replacement unit for those lacking Apple car play & Bluetooth functionality. Capacitive touch screen very responsive. Great to be able to have to Bluetooth phones connected simultaneously.

Cons: Wish it had USB connection in front vs. having to route extension cable (included) from rear USB port. Tuner RDS display would be better if the old style radio tuner display was eliminated allowing longer text display for RDS info.

Very nice capacative touchscreen for the price. Works very well as advertised. Some menus are a little laggy. Crutchfield customer service was very, very helpful (and patient) when I had some issues with the Idatalink hookup. Bluetooth connects to my iPhone almost instantly on startup (way quicker than in my wife's factory Subaru); voice calls are clear on both ends.

Pros: Affordable CarPlay, nice screen, quality phone calls with bluetooth connection.

Cons: Some screens are a little laggy; no volume knob.

This Pioneer looks great. The Apple CarPlay is awesome. I can listen the music on my phone, Pandora, or Amazon music. Installed a backup camera as well... No issues.

Pros: Great upgraded sound with factory speakers. Was easy to install with youtube video.

    Cons: No cons.

Very happy with the Pioneer in my 2005 Sienna. I ordered the upgraded wire harness and had Crutchfield pre-wire the harness for me. It was money well spent with the time it saved me. In less than two and a half hours I had it installed without any issues. There are also plenty of YouTube videos that show how to route the wires for the microphone and usb connection.

Pros: Apple car play; capacitive touchscreen; great mic and improved Siri.

    Cons: None.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just installed this unit in a 1998 Saturn SL2. Have been looking to upgrade for awhile but waited for Apple CarPlay. Went with the MVH-1400NEX because we didn't need the cd/dvd player. Who does, with all of the smartphones now days? This unit has a really nice screen, responsive touch, nice layout, CarPlay, and its made by pioneer. Install was straight forward with the supplied Metra adaptor and wire harness. The fit was perfect and it is very solid. We use this older car mainly as a toad behind a motorhome and this is a nice upgrade to bring new technology to the dash.

So far so good! Definitely a huge upgrade from the factory system, and CarPlay works like a dream. Love the simplicity of this unit and how many features it packs in. The iDatalink connection, CarPlay, and the very responsive touch screen all make for a head unit I'm very happy with.

    Pros: - touch screen responsiveness - iDatalink connectivity - CarPlay - microphone/Bluetooth

Cons: - menus get a little intense - no volume knob (part of me misses real buttons)

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this radio to provide rear view camera for my wife. Don't like cheesy aftermarket screens and mirrors. Carplay and AppRadio live was a deciding factor on choosing Pioneer over other brands. Installed in 2012 RAV4 V6 (no JBL). Trim kit felt flimsy, but once you figure out the puzzle - it fit nicely. Install lasted around 5 hours - took some time to figure out why the rear camera did not work. If you using RCA cable with red wire to feed the power from the radio to the camera - connect RCA ground to radio ground. 14000 NEX is a good value. The screen is amazing, sound is good, radio tuner, bluetooth, carplay - everything feels like a step-up from factory radio. Steering wheel controls are working, so is AUX, but USB cable did not. Not a big dial for me - placement of factory jack is strange and I just going to use USB extension. 2 things I would really like, but don't have: 2nd USB port, so I can plug in 256Gb flash with all my music and HD radio. Well, if you need those things add few hundred dollars and get upper trip radio. Last thing: save yourself some time and get harness service from Crutchfield. I'm handy with soldering iron, but they do it for a small price and it's worth every penny.

Pros: Capacitive screen, carplay, good sound, good price, fast boot and very responsive interface

Cons: Only one USB port, no HD radio, no parking guide lines overlay.

This is why Crutchfield is the best, the support received is better than any company i have ever dealt with. Thank you to all at Crutchfield!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this head unit in my 2009 Kia Rondo last week. After a week of living with it I've found only one thing that I don't care for is my iPhone 7 took a very long time to pair with the radio. I had my bluetooth on and nothing would happen on the radio. For several minutes I was messing with it trying to find any other setting that may prompt it to wake up, but nothing. After several minutes of frustration it began to pair. I see in one of the menus that there is a bluetooth icon but it has never been clickable, even after my phone is paired and working. There's another bluetooth icon that is clickable to turn it on/off but I have no idea what the other one is about, it just sits there. After the initial pairing, it connects fine after that. I bought this for CarPlay and that works really well. Overall I'm really happy with this head unit.

Pros: CarPlay Good sound even through stock speakers Pioneer interface is ok, it only takes a short learning curve

Cons: Bluetooth initial pairing is a little wonky

Replaced a previous pioneer unit (OLD), my wife and I love the APP radio features in this unit, we like staying current with technology. I installed it myself on a Tundra and it took about an hour to get everything off and back in, only problem was that the CarPlay would only work intermittently after a day of searching the web and pioneer website bc it was a weekend all I could find is that IOS11 was having problems and pioneer was working on it moving on, came across an article and it said to use the ORIGINAL Apple cable and it would work fine, I did that and everything is perfect. Great Unit. PS I've purchased from Crutchfield in the past and no regrets.

Incredible sound upgrade over factory...this has always been my Pioneer experience! Plenty of options and expandability, but two many ways to do the same thing. Best stereo choice I think I've made.

Pros: - CarPlay works well - Bluetooth is insanely easy and high audio drops! - Ease of use for all functions is incredibly well designed.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let's start with the good... the MVH-1400NEX is by far the most affordable way to get a feature packed capacitive touchscreen receiver with CarPlay into your vehicle. It's a sharp looking unit. The bad news is that with so many features, compatibility and reliability issues abound. "Glitchy" is probably the best word I'd use to describe it. For example, its finicky about video codecs. I still haven't quite figured out exactly why it rejects some files and plays others. When a video file plays, sometimes it's fine other times the audio lags significantly behind the video (same file). Bluetooth connectivity is spotty, sometimes dropping the connection when you go to use it. I installed the idatalink Maestro RR to retain Sync in my Ford, but sometimes it can't find the factory microphone, sometimes its fine. *A helpful note to folks who own Fords with Sync, your in-dash USB port is basically turned into a charging port with no connectivity to the receiver. To use CarPlay or play music or video files from a USB drive, you must connect via the USB cable from the back of the receiver (just an annoyance, but one in a growing list). I will confirm that Crutchfield's legendary tech support is indeed legendary. They helped trouble shoot several issues in install mostly due to incorrect instructions from the idatalink folks.

Pros: Looks sharp Responsive screen Affordable CarPlay

Cons: Video Lag Inconsistent Bluetooth Inconsistent connectivity

This is the first apple car play stereo I've had. I have to say it's an average preformer overall. I wish I had done all the research prior to purchasing, cause it didn't come with a remote and doesn't work my pioneer cd r510 remote. I also don't like when your connected to your phone thru car play and you lose signal and it just stops playing music until you get signal again, or gives you an error. I mainly bought cause it has a flat panel and makes your car look more factory. It has plenty of options to change the sound to your liking.

The best feature your vehicle can have in 2018 (if you have an iPhone) is Apple CarPlay! This unit delivers the goods for a fair price. Install was tedious (had to scour the forums for tips since Crutchfield doesn't have notes on this vehicle), but I got it up and running within a few hours. Apple CarPlay: The Pioneer MVH-1400NEX features Apple CarPlay, the smarter and safer way to use your iPhone in the car. The Pioneer MVH-1400NEX supports Apple CarPlay through your USB-connected iPhone (iOS 7.1+) with Lightning connector. Your iPhone can be connected to the NEX-series head unit's rear-panel USB port via the included USB extension cable and a Lightning-to-USB cable. Apple CarPlay gives iPhone users an incredibly intuitive way to make calls, use Maps, listen to music, and access messages through Siri voice control and the Pioneer receiver's touchscreen controls.

    • Maps: Apple CarPlay brings the power and simplicity of Apple Maps to your dashboard; complete with turn-by-turn direction, traffic conditions, and estimated travel time. You can enter a new destination or choose a favorite or recent destination using the head unit's touchscreen or by simply asking Siri. CarPlay can also predict where you most likely want to go using addresses from your email, text messages, contacts, and calendars. You can even listen to music from your Apple CarPlay device or other connected source device while using Apple Maps. If you have iOS 12.0 or newer on your iPhone with the latest version of Google Maps or Waze, you can choose to navigate via Google Maps or Waze instead of CarPlay. Google Maps and Waze do not support Siri voice control, but will have their own proprietary voice control function which has to be accessed through a touchscreen icon on the receiver.
    • Phone & Messages: Via Apple CarPlay, you'll be able to make calls, return missed calls, and listen to voicemails through the Pioneer head receiver. Siri can also help you do all these things. In addition, Siri can send, read, and reply to your text messages for you; so you never have to look at your iPhone while driving.
    • Music Library: Through Apple CarPlay, you can access your artists, song, playlists, and iTunes Radio on your iPhone using the Pioneer head unit's touchscreen. Or, just tell Siri what you'd like to listen to. The head unit's touchscreen will display song/artist information, as well as album art in the background.
    • Apps: CarPlay also supports additional audio apps that you've downloaded to your iPhone for enjoying music, radio, sports, news, podcasts, & audiobooks. Control them from the head unit's touchscreen just like you would from your iPhone. Apple continues to add more apps to CarPlay. Current supported apps include (fees may apply) -

    • Use the included USB extension cable and an "Apple Certified" Lightning-to-USB extension cable (not included) for connection. Any other USB extension cable or non-certified cable can cause CarPlay to malfunction.
    • Bluetooth hands-free phone and wireless music streaming cannot be used while Apple CarPlay is being used with a connected iPhone.

AppRadio Mode+ (for iPhone & Android): The Pioneer digital media receiver features AppRadio Mode+ for Apple iPhones (iOS 9.0+) with Lightning connector and select Android (OS 4.4+) smartphones. AppRadio Mode+ gives you the ability to view and control compatible iPhone and Android smartphone apps from the receiver's touchscreen using a one-cable USB connection. You'll need to download Pioneer's AppRadio app (for Apple iOS 7.0+ / Android OS 4.4+) and the AppRadioLive app (Apple iOS 9.0+ / Android OS 4.4+) onto your compatible iPhone or Android smartphone. Once you have downloaded the apps, your compatible iPhone or Android smartphone simply connects to the Pioneer digital media receiver's USB input using the cable that came with your mobile device. Now that the AppRadio and AppRadioLive apps are downloaded, and your compatible Apple iPhone or Android smartphone is connected the digital media receiver, you have access to maps, media, news information, and your events calendar through the receiver's intuitive touchscreen interface.

    • Maps: AppRadio Mode+, along with AppRadioLive use the native maps from your smartphone overlaid with INRIX live traffic data to provide live traffic and incident information to give you an estimated time of arrival at your chosen destination. Once you select your destination, you'll be guided along your route via an on-screen map and audible voice prompts. Selected destinations can also be sent to popular compatible apps like Navmii or Genius Maps. You can even use Yelp to find points of interest along the way, including restaurant ratings and reviews.
    • Media: AppRadio Mode+ and AppRadioLive let you play your stored music library directly from your smartphone through the Pioneer digital media receiver. And, you can access over 60,00 internet radio stations from Radionomy. Or, you can access over 25,000+ radio shows and podcasts from your Stitcher account.
    • Events: In addition, AppRadio One and AppRadioLive keep you up-to-date on the latest news stories, RSS feeds and weather information with Feedly and Open Weather Map. With text-to-speech technology, the Pioneer receiver will even read you the latest news stories from the internet.
    • Calendar: The AppRadio One and AppRadio Live applications also keep your life organized and makes it easier to stay in touch and have fun. With multiple viewing options within its sleek, simple user interface, you can access your smartphone and Facebook calendars in one place, RSVP to Facebook events and use EventSeeker to find nearby concerts and events based on your personal interests and location.

Android MTP Playback: The Pioneer MVH-1400NEX supports MTP for playback & control of stored MP3/WMA/AAC music files on your Android (OS 4.0+) device through the Pioneer receiver's rear-panel USB port. In this mode, you get basic playback control (like Play/Pause & Previous/Next Track), plus song/artist/album information on the receiver's LCD touchscreen. During MTP connection, you cannot use your Android smartphone's touchscreen to control music playback and you cannot select music apps from your smartphone for playback. However, you can continue to listen to stored music on your Android smartphone through the head unit while you check your Calendar, Facebook, Texts, etc on your phone.

iPod Direct Connect: The Pioneer MVH-1400NEX's rear-panel USB port can be used to connect your Lightning Apple device or 30-pin iPhone 4S to the head unit. You'll need a Lightning-to-USB cable to connect your Apple device with Lightning connector, or a 30-pin to USB cable to connect your iPhone 4S. The USB connection allows for audio playback, music navigation, information display (including album art), and charging of your compatible iPhone or iPod.

    • Audio Control: From the head unit's touchscreen, you can search your iPod/iPhone's audio content by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, Composer, or Audiobook. You can also select Random & Repeat functions for a certain song or specific folder. You'll still be able to control your iPod or iPhone from the device's touchscreen too.
    • Song/Artist/Album Info: In addition, the head unit will display your iPod/iPhone's stored music information including Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song & Album title, as well as Album Art.
Note: If there are 10,000 songs or more on your iPod/iPhone, it will require almost one hour to fully populate the song list.

Smartphone Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 5V/1.5A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone or Android device when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. If your mobile device has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

    • MIXTRAX Illumination: MIXTRAX features a club-style illumination that enhances the mood with a dynamic dance club-like lighting effect. As MIXTRAX begins, lights start pulsing to the beat of the music, adding an extra level of entertainment. You can choose among twelve patterns of lighting variations from sound pressure level or low-pass synchronization modes. The lighting effects work like a spectrum analyzer, reaching peak colors based on the intensity of the music.

Dimmer: To prevent the touchscreen display and button illumination from being too bright at night, the illumination is automatically dimmed when the car's headlights are turned on. The automatic dimmer function only works when the orange/white illumination wire in the wiring harness is connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit. You can also turn on or off the dimmer manually. You can even set a timer for the dimmer to turn on or off.

Parking Brake Interlock: This unit has a parking brake interlock system that prohibits viewing of video programming and operating certain controls when the vehicle is in motion. In order to watch video on the in-dash monitor, the vehicle must be stopped with the parking brake engaged. The head unit's light green wire must be connected to your vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. The head unit's touchscreen will display "Attention! Viewing of front seat video source while driving is strictly prohibited", if you try to watch a video when your vehicle is in motion.

Steering Wheel Control Input: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately).

Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, reverse camera input, sub input. Has everything i need not a thing more and not a thing less. I was looking at the AVH-2440NEX but it was $100 more for features i did not need such as the dual camera input and the DVD/CD player. [ Shane  May 14, 2018 ]

    20 questions already asked

No, you can connect via bluetooth if you'd like and play music. A wire is required to use CarPlay. [ Eric  Mar 17, 2019 ]
No. It requires a wired connection for CarPlay, but you can connect and play music via Bluetooth. I use Bluetooth for short trips and connect to CarPlay on longer ones. [ O  Mar 17, 2019 ]
No you can connect via Bluetooth [ Braden  Mar 16, 2019 ]
No you can use Bluetooth without the phone being connected, but to use apple carplay it will need to be plugged in. [ Kyle  Mar 16, 2019 ]
I also thought this pioneer came with a remote, but does not. Look at the 601 if still available. I have installed both. 601 a much nicer head unit. [ Robert  Mar 14, 2019 ]
Yeah I'm pretty sure all pioneers come with remotes [ Clayton  Mar 14, 2019 ]
Per Apple website it only lists compatible iPhone models so I would assume and iPad mini would not work. [ Angelica  Mar 14, 2019 ]
Yes, but you'll need a 4G model or use a Hot Spot to take advantage of most functionality [ freddie  Mar 14, 2019 ]
According to Pioneer's website, it is a capacitive touchscreen. This was one of the main reasons I purchased this unit over the other Pioneer units which were all resistive. This might have changed since. I've had my touchscreen for over a year on my 2005 Sienna. Using Apple Carplay, Apple Maps would allow you to scroll to different locations on the maps. The capacitive touchscreen worked well. However, now that I'm more familiar with Apple Carplay, I find that going to different views using button presses such as pressing "end" during Navigation will show you the entire path with traffic notifications to be a much safer than scrolling, zooming, and panning while driving. With that said, I only have to touch lightly for the presses to be recognized, confirming my belief that the touchscreen is capacitive. Hope this helps. [ SDDK31  Mar 13, 2019 ]
It's a glass captive screen. Not a resistive screen, confiremed this via pioneer electronics specs [ DAKOTA  Mar 13, 2019 ]
    Yes [ Mark  Mar 14, 2019 ]
I read a review that says that you can. I haven't made that modification to it. [ Ivan D.  Mar 02, 2019 ]
Yes for certain vehilces [ Kyle  Dec 26, 2018 ]
Your stock antenna should plug right in. No extra accessories needed. It's a plug and play. [ Christopher  Dec 26, 2018 ]
Yes but it isn't the best. Takes for ever to charge. Mainly for car play [ Christopher  Dec 26, 2018 ]
Yes it should support the charging. [ Colin  Dec 18, 2018 ]
    Yes [ Andy  Dec 17, 2018 ]
It is a 5 V 1.5 amp USB port so yes you should have no problems using it as a charge port. [ Brian  Dec 17, 2018 ]
I used a after market back up camera, one that screws into license plate. It plunged right in. Great picture [ Christopher  Dec 26, 2018 ]
I don't know what kind of connector is on the Ford backup camera. But I know that the standard connector that I bought for our truck worked. Sorry that I can't help more [ Geoffrey  Nov 05, 2018 ]
Can it interface with ODB2 to read engine data, have F350 07 diesel. [ Henry  Jan 03, 2019 ]
Yes. You'll need the SiriusXM Vehicle Tuner Kit for Satellite Radio [ Richard  Jul 21, 2018 ]
It must be plugged in to use anything associated with CarPlay. [ Chris  Jun 26, 2018 ]
Using Apple CarPlay you need to have the phone plugged in to get navigation audio commands. [ SDDK31  Jun 24, 2018 ]
I use iPhone, it steams sound through Bluetooth but will stream video(of gps) to unit mirroring your phone. As of right now Apple maps is the only thing that works with the unit without 3rd party apps. Ios12 will be changing that. Also plugging it in has better audio quality than bluetooth. Hope this helps. [ Sean O  Jun 24, 2018 ]
For Apple Car Play it will only project navigation using a corded connection. [ Angelica  Jun 24, 2018 ]
I used the mic that came with the unit. I didn't have a stock mic on my truck. [ Christopher  Dec 26, 2018 ]
No. Standard mic jack [ DAKOTA  Jun 19, 2018 ]
Yes. While eq settings are in the settings of the radio, and you would need to go away from the "carplay" screen, the audio from carplay still works while you access eq settings. [ Andrew  Jun 11, 2018 ]
Yes. You can switch back and forth between the car play screen and the eq screen without interruption of apps. [ LANCE  Jun 11, 2018 ]
I don't use Apple Carplay but I access the eq on mine when ever I want to. [ Christopher  Jun 11, 2018 ]
    yes [ CHRISTOPHER  Jun 11, 2018 ]
No! It will not work. But ref maps will [ Christopher  Dec 26, 2018 ]
I have not been able to so far. [ Mark  Jun 08, 2018 ]
iOS, Apple's iPhone & iPad operating system, currently only allows the use of Apple Maps with CarPlay. But yesterday, during their annual Worldwide Developers Conference keynote, they announced that iOS 12 (due out this fall) will support third-party mapping apps with CarPlay. Yay! (I'm a big Waze fan, and I tried CarPlay and ended up disabling it due to this limitation). [ Sam  Jun 05, 2018 ]
NO, Apple Car play Apple only [ Calixto  Jun 03, 2018 ]
Video is not capable on this unit. It will play the sound but with no picture [ Christopher  Dec 26, 2018 ]
not from what i have found and it has video to sound lag( playing a video the mouths on screen dont match the sound coming out) otherwise very nice deck very sleek [ Claytin  May 08, 2018 ]
    Not sure I've never tried it [ Lance  May 07, 2018 ]
The you tube app is not supported by CarPlay. There are ways that you can, but I don't believe the manufacturer or other drivers would want you to since it wouldn't be very safe to drive and watch TV. [ Chris  May 06, 2018 ]
Yes you can. When connected via Bluetooth (which must be paired when the phone is NOT connected via USB), the iPhone will use what's called Siri Eyes Free (a feature that is not at all related to CarPlay). If you connect via USB, the phone will go into CarPlay mode. On another note, I have not yet tested the "Hey Siri" feature. [ ANTONIO  Sep 15, 2018 ]
No. CarPlay is almost always a wired connection unless you have a stereo like the high end Alpine that includes CarPlay over wireless. [ Stuart  Apr 11, 2018 ]
Yes in fact you can, I just tried it on my stereo I installed this past weekend. Siri via Bluetooth does interface with the Pioneer head unit. [ Michael  Apr 11, 2018 ]
no , I was not able to connect over Bluetooth only. you might call Pioneer and ask them. I could get siri to respond but no volume came through the phone , acted as if it wanted to produce the sound elsewhere but I heard nothing [ Kyler  Apr 11, 2018 ]
Nope. Just touch the button that looks like the old Windows icon - 4 small boxes - on the left hand side. No issues here, just a small bit of lag. [ Nik  Apr 19, 2018 ]
No - but then we just got it installed so we do not have a lot of experience with the product yet. [ Pam Ennis  Apr 16, 2018 ]
Yes it is the only thing is it doesn't have is Android auto so you will need to connect a cord to it with the adapter to access videos and etc. [ Colin  Apr 25, 2018 ]
Yes its compatible. This unit only has the smaller 6.2" screen and will do Carplay only, this model will not do AA. Most systems require a 7" screen in order to use Android Auto (AA). Look atthe MVH2300NEX with the 7" screen, that will do AA [ GSB  Apr 09, 2018 ]
It boots up in about ten seconds. The warning screen goes away on its own, unlike Kenwood stereo in my wife's car that requires you to click "Agree" every single time. [ ANTONIO  Sep 15, 2018 ]
It takes approximately 40second to 1 minute after turning the key on to view reverse camera. [ TRAVIS A  Apr 05, 2018 ]
It's pretty quick. As fast as any OEM setup I've seen. There's a warning screen that comes on upon boot up but the camera will actually override it and switch over. [ LANCE  Apr 05, 2018 ]
Yes on the subwoofer, but not sure on the fit [ Lance  Mar 29, 2018 ]
You can definitely hook up a after market amp for your subs no problem just use the RCA sub output on the back of the unit. As for fitting the MVH1400NEX in your trailblazer all I can say is the best thing to do would be to contact Crutchfield directly by phone and ask them. They were very knowledgeable about these things and helped me with everything I needed in order to get mine done. I would imagine that if you are removing a double din factory radio to replace it with then you will most likely be able to install the unit you inquired about. Crutchfield has really good customer support they helped me out with all my questions and also got me all the right gear I needed to do a proper install. Hope this helps, good luck and enjoy! [ Christopher  Mar 29, 2018 ]
I would do some research first to make sure that this stereo along with the kit will fit your trailblazer. I just installed mine and I love it! Especially for the price! [ Ivan D.  Mar 29, 2018 ]
I just installed this in my 2016 Fiat 500X mini suv. Hooked up a powered Kicker sub to it. Radio includes controls and hookup for the subwoofer. Radio works great! [ Jonathan  Mar 29, 2018 ]
Not sure about the trailblazer fitment but the subwoofer connection absolutely. It has a 5v pre amp subwoofer rca exit [ Paulo  Mar 29, 2018 ]
It has a set of subwoofer outputs no worries. It is pretty big...but smaller than the appradio 4 that came before it. Looks nice. Much faster too. Don't hesitate to buy it. [ Bryan  Mar 29, 2018 ]
Yes to subs. It's the same size as a regular double din. [ jtizz  Mar 29, 2018 ]
Subwoofers are easily connected to this unit, but you'll have to ask Crutchfield about fitment for your particular vehicle. I'm sure they have an mounting kit that will ship for free upon purchase of this unit. [ CHRISTOPHER  Mar 29, 2018 ]
