2013 Toyota Corolla
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Not good for CarPlay. Would not recommend this unit if you have an iPhone.
The AVH-4200NEX DVD receiver incorporates Pioneer's "Network Entertainment Experience" (NEX), an innovative combination of built-in features and cloud-based services that connect with your smartphone or tablet to offer familiar apps and interfaces when you're in the car. And best of all, it'll work with Apple® or Android™ phones.
This Pioneer supports CarPlay — integrating your iPhone® into the driving experience in a seamless interface, putting iPhone content at the driver's fingertips with minimal distraction. You'll enjoy easy access to your music library, your phone, messages, navigation, and many third party streaming music apps, too. Learn more at www.apple.com/ios/carplay.
As an added bonus, you can access Siri Eyes Free functionality with a touch of the receiver's touchscreen, using your voice to place calls, select music, hear notification, add reminders — even compose and listen to text messages.
If you're an Android fan, you'll love how Android Auto integrates the Android platform into your driving experience in a non-distracting way. You'll have voice control access to Google Maps, weather, music, your phone, text messages, plus easy access to many of your favorite apps. Get more info at www.android.com/auto.
Customize the touchscreen by moving icons around to create shortcuts to your favorite sources and apps. And you've got a choice of colors and backgrounds that'll let you tailor the look to match your vehicle. Video content plays in bright, clear detail when you're parked, and when you're on the road, you can entertain your passengers by sending a movie from the receiver to a rear-seat screen. And of course you can plug in a rear-view camera to play it safe in crowded parking lots.
Pioneer's AppRadio mode and AppRadioLIVE offer some other cool features. Launch and control compatible iPhone apps from the face of your receiver with AppRadio mode. You can see the latest compatible apps here. And for more functionality, download the free AppRadioLIVE app to your phone and you can sync many popular apps and services into a single, easy-to-use interface, giving you easy control over maps, media, news, and calendars.
AppRadioLIVE offers a clean interface for music, nav, weather, and more.
The AVIC-4200NEX offers compatibility you won't find in many other aftermarket radios, thanks to the iDatalink Maestro module (not included).
The iDatalink adapter also lets you tap into your vehicle's diagnostic port, so you can check out expanded functionality including gauges, climate controls, a distance sensor, and tire pressure monitor on the Pioneer's screen.
Crave the best sound quality? You'll be stoked that the AVH-4200NEX supports FLAC file playback, for compression-free CD-quality sound when you're cruising down the highway. And don't forget, you can also enjoy all your CDs, DVDs, discs full of MP3 or WMA music, SD cards, or USB storage devices loaded with files. You can connect your iPod® or iPhone to one the receiver's two rear USB inputs and use the receiver's controls to access your playlists, with tools like Alphabet Search and Link Search to help you zero in on the song you want. Android users — you'll be able to browse and play back the music that's stored on many Android phones.
The built-in HD Radio tuner delivers crystal-clear FM and AM reception. If you're a fan of streaming Internet radio, you can take charge of your Pandora® account from the touchscreen, complete with thumbs-up and thumbs-down controls, or check out the variety of music and features like audible Facebook updates and tweets from Aha™ Radio. For an outstanding variety of music, news, sports, and talk programming, you can also connect an optional SiriusXM satellite radio tuner. This NEX receiver will even display album art from the satellite feed.
You can make the most of your music with this Pioneer's 13-band EQ. Just swipe your finger on the touchscreen to dial in the curve that brings out tones you're looking for. And you'll find digital time alignment, Auto-EQ, and other powerful tools for compensating for your vehicle's acoustics.
In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.
Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.
iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.
Great product. I just wish the screen was better (easier to see) in sunlight and not affected by finger prints so much.

Average Customer Review(s):
Not good for CarPlay. Would not recommend this unit if you have an iPhone.
So, umm... Great.. I've had it for about 5 months and boom.... dead again. The first one I ordered didn't work, then, shipped it back,. This is the second one and yet again... DEAD... Paid good American dollars for this thing... Save your money. Very disappointed. I'm assuming it is out of warranty. :-(.
Pros: worked great when it was working...
Cons: NOT for long... 2 out of 2 of these things were duds...
I really needed an update for our 2004 Sienna. The Android Auto feature sold me on this unit, but I was disappointed after all the work was complete. The Sienna uses a 2 connection antenna that is integrated into the front and rear windows. This unit, along with the installation kit only accounted for one, and when complete the radio reception was much worse than the standard radio and rendered it almost unusable. The screen is really bad during daylight hours. The background graphics are almost indiscernible during the day. I will say that the unit is MUCH better for apple products than Android. Apple car play is quick and functional, but that wasn't my priority.
Cons: Really bad screen in daylight. Bad radio reception in my vehicle.Crutchfield response on 7/3/2017 Once we saw this review, our Tech Support team reached out to Paul to help him further. Many vehicles have a signal booster to greatly improve radio reception, so please check with our Tech Support team when you're doing the installation. They can confirm if your vehicle does, and how to make sure it's activated. In Toyota vehicles, it is common to have two antennas, but we only use one of them.
Great product. I just wish the screen was better (easier to see) in sunlight and not affected by finger prints so much.
By far the best radio that pioneer mix I love the brightness I love the Apple play and has a lot of bills and whistles and thanks to my wife for purchasing this radio for me she's the best
I like this system a lot, but it is clearly geared more to the Apple phone for connectivity.. many people (including myself) have encountered USB connectivity issues with Android phones..
Has performed exactly as advertised, installation was explained well in the instructions, android connected. Very pleased.
For the price you can't beat it works perfect with my 2012 F250, works great with Samsung galaxy s7 have no complaints about this system. Recommend it to anyone looking for a upgrade.
This unit is good. It has alot of option. But the screen is very laggy, you select something on the screen and there is a good three second pause before it does what you want.
Pros: Alot of speaker options, the eq and the crossover. Sndroid auto
Cons: Screen very laggy, eq and crossover can be kina cofnfusing if you dont know what your doing. Not sure if its worth the price
Reviews were spot on....excellent HU so far....
Pros: Android auto.....sound quality.....excellent pricepoint
Cons: Updating firmware via usb ??? Ended up using SD card
Does what it's supposed to with Bluetooth. Sound is fine; the auto-centering is a nice feature. Seems to be designed for a subwoofer; bass response is lacking without one.
I installed this a few days ago in my Fiat 500x using an iDatalink controller. The installation took about 3 hours (including installing a backup camera) and is a significant improvement over the factory stereo. It does take the unit a few seconds to boot up, but the rearview camera works immediately so it's not a problem.
Good head unit for the price point.
Pros: Offers CarPlay, Bluetooth, good screen resolution for back up camera at strong price point
Cons: Start up is slower than OEM systems
Just installed this unit a couple of days ago in my 2007 Wrangler. This is my first unit with Apple Carplay and it is awesome. This receiver will be the center of a complete update to what was the basic radio in my Jeep. To call it an upgrade is a huge understatement. Even in the sunlight the screen is readable. This is also my first HD radio receiver. If you are looking at replacing your factory receiver this unit should definitely be on your short list.
Pros: Too many to list. Apple Carplay, HD radio, Bluetooth, Sat radio compatible, rear seat video option, etc.
Cons: - No onboard nav included. Not a negative for me really, but some people may be looking for that. I believe it can be added with a module from Pioneer. - The unit was a tight fit in the space where my factory radio was previously installed.
I bought this to replace a burned out stock unit (REN) on my wife's 2008 Chrysler Town and Country (NOTE: you can bend the support tabs instead of cutting them). Her van includes the VES with 2 screens in the rear. With the stock radio, I could play 2 DVDs at the same time, with one DVD showing on one screen and the other DVD showing on the 2nd screen. Both kids could wear headphones to listen to their own DVD. This Pioneer unit allows me to do the same thing (also installed the iDatalink adapters and AV CH1 harness per Crutchfield's recommendation). As an added bonus, both kids can watch their own DVD while I listen to the radio or Sirius through the main cabin. This is a BIG improvement over the stock radio, so no more guessing what is happening in the moving just by listening to the dialog and sound effects. Other benefits include the addition of a USB port to play digital media on a flash drive or portable hard drive (my 1 TB hard drive works!!!). These files can be shown on either or both of the rear screens. I can also play digital media and DVDs at the same time. Also, when the kids are watching movies, I can easily disable the rear speakers so the kids don't have to hurt their ears with the head phones. Negatives include the menu system. It could be a little easier to find some of the settings. Also, the manual could have included a clear description of each input/output port on the back of the head unit. Both of these are minor complaints.
Pros: Dual zone -- two outputs to two screens AND listen to something different in the main cabin. I also think the equalizer and sound settings drastically improved the audio in our minivan.
Cons: Description of input/output ports in the manual
Awesome head unit! Mounted in my 2013 F150 along with the Metra F150 idatalink install kit. Looks factory!
The Pioneer AVH-4200NEX was the perfect upgrade to my 2013 Challenger, installation was a breeze and was able to acquire Apple CarPlay and other features all while still retaining all the cars original steering wheel controls and gauge clusters. Another reason why I love this head unit is because even as an aftermarket item it still makes my car look like it rolled off the lot stock with it. Great buy, for the price I don't think you will find much better.
Pros: Easy interaction Breezy install Retain all original car features Apple CarPlay Backup Camera feature
Cons: Had to modify my sub body to fit the radio (Not the radios fault, manufacturer made dodges double DIN radios a quarter inch shy of 4 inches.)
Installed in a 2017 Jeep Wrangler JKU. Used a metra dash kit, idatalink maestro RR (for steering wheel controls), CH1 harness, etc. Has a ton of features and sounds significantly better than the stock head unit. IMO this is the single best upgrade to a stock base stereo. Speakers and amp will follow soon.
Pros: Great features. Carplay, Android Auto, bluetooth, sd card slot, etc. too many to list.
Cons: No specific cons. Maybe if it had a few more watts.
This is everything that I was hoping it for! I was trying to stay in a certain price point yet get some of the features that are important to me. This Pioneer has most everything one could be looking for. Apple Car play works great, and being able to add SiriusXM was nice too. It was very easy to install, Crutchfield has all the right parts for everything. Once installed the system sound very nice, and having Car Play is great!
Pros: Apple Car Play, Android Auto, HD stereo, easy install
Cons: None at this time!
Love it so far. Does all kinds of stuff. More then I know. Now I need some good speakers to go with it.
Pros: Rocks sounds great. Hands free is awesome
Cons: I need to get rid of my stock speakers,,,,more money. Looking at Crutchfield for the solutions.
Got this HU for my 2015 Subaru WRX. I love it, you don't need to spend extra for NAV when you can just plug your phone in and use the NAV from your phone on the Pioneer touch screen. I installed a micro bypass as well so I can use both Apple Car Play, and use the other USB to mirror my iphone, and watch DVD's. I installed the second USB in the glovebox so passengers can plug an apple device and watch youtube or netlix on the actual Pioneer device. When commuting to work I typically just use apple car play. With the correct accessories Crutchfield provided I was able to retain steering wheel controls and factory USB.
Pros: It does everything I could ever want. Watch DVD's, videos from my phone, navigation from my phone, all integrated seamlessly.
Cons: The DVD player doesn't play Blu-Ray. The microphone quality stinks.
Excellent Head Unit so many features I love that the face is removable and Apple Car Play Eliminates the need for navigation.
Great product. Has all of the wanted/current features available. One issue for do-it-yourselfers... you've got to figure out how and where to run the microphone wire and two USB cords (wife has IPhone and I have Android), so it doesn't look shoddy.
I bought this stereo for my 2005 VW Touareg(4.2L V8 w/nav). I coupled the purchase with a Boyo backup camera, Sirius Tuner, Axxess ASWC-1, and a Scosche Kit. It took a little while to get all the equipment installed, i also upgraded to a Diamond Audio Amp, Addictive Audio Amp, and Diamond Audio speaker set from my local Pro Audio Concepts located in River Oaks(FT Worth, TX). Everything together sounds amazing. I love the user interface with this stereo. I have an Android phone and it pairs quick and painless. Whether its bluetooth, Pandora, Sirius, usb, an older edition iPod, or an cdmi hook-up, it all works well. I should mention I added and ActionTec Screenbeam Mini II, and my installer added an additional usb cord so I can keep it plugged in and powered up if I am in the car with the kids and feel the need to put on a movie or show while sitting in park. It works very nice. My wife iPhone connects for Apple Car Play, which has a nicer interface than the Android, and she loves the fact how easy it is to make calls and respond to a quick text via voice option if necessary. When deciding what head unit to purchase, I did take into consideration the navigation unit. However, with Android Auto or Apple Car Play, it made the decision process much easier(no need to spend extra money for a nav unit). The upgrades on a Touareg can be a pain in the neck, but my installer is master craftsman and was up for the challenge. Crutchfield tech support was very helpful as usual.
Pros: -Easy usable interface - Android Auto & Apple Car Play are a massive plus - Plays older models of iPods - HDMI output allows usage of Smart View or Mirroring(w/ Actiontec Screenbeam Mini II) - DVD Player - USB has 2 inputs - A bunch of features for the backlight illumination and changing the screensaver -
Cons: - 2005 VW Touareg Install kit is a Scosche and is not all that great(not really a con against the stereo but more against the VW frame)
Awesome unit, does everything I want and more. Not just well, but excellently.
Pros: Ease of use, system building options are excellent.
Cons: None found
Great upgrade from a stock radio in a '06 Corolla. Despite what I'v seen other people say about the screen brightness being too dim in the sunlight, I've had no problems. This could be due to my vehicle is made so that receiver sits pretty far into the dash and has a bit of a overhang above the radio, but living in sunny Florida I see the screen just fine. Radio and the DVD/CD slot work very well. and the screen comes down to access the extra slots for this device. My LG phone (Android) works great on call via bluetooth. People can even hear me whisper on the other end during testing. They weren't not able to hear exactly what I was saying, but good enough (glad it's bluetooth 3.0 at least for this price point). Android Auto works when plugged into the in-dash and it's a breeze to use. Rather your a nerd like me a regular person and you want something with more features that works as advertised. This device is for you. Side Notes: I should warn potential buyers that if you intend to use your phone for the Android Auto or Apple Car play features and your handheld device has a USB-C port, check out Pioneers website for compatible cables. If you intend to use the SD card and/or USB slots there some software compatibility issues that you will need to address first, but they were a simple fix. *BONUS* This in-dash is suppose to only support a 32GB SD card. I'm currently using a 64GB card (Formatted NTFS). Theoretically you can go up to 2TB using the softwar
Pros: Great sound, bright screen, android auto work flawlessly
Cons: Has a motorized screen that comes out and depending on the dash kit it may not have enough room to move in and out. Will take some work to get it mounted and screen moving freely.
Awesome receiver, very easy to install.
Love it, Crutchfield was great to work with even on Sunday afternoon!
this is a great unit. sounds great and looks great. not sure what more you need from a stereo. Apple car play works great. i like that my navigation shows up on the screen. SiriusXM ready which is awesome. I have had the stereo for a few weeks now and have no complaints
Pros: carplay, SiriusXM
Awesome product. Stands out from other radios
Great upgrade to the stock radio in 2008 Lexus RX350. Provides great smartphone capabilities via Apple's CarPlay. Really like the ability to use smartphone nav capabilities on the large screen format of the AVh-4200NEX. Microphone delivers great quality sound when using the bluetooth connectivity for telephone calls. Simple, intuitive interface for picking functions such as radio, cd/dvd, telephone, etc. This system supports other interfaces such as back up camera, additional amps and inputs--therefore have a path to continue to upgrade without replacing the unit.
Pros: Large touch screen, integrated smartphone capabilities (i.e., CarPlay), Intuitive user interface, clear microphone quality for phone calls, smart phone nav on the big screen
Cons: All connectors (e.g., USB, aux) via rear interface and therefore you have to find a clean way to connect external devices to a dangling dongle.
I installed this head unit along with an iDatalink Maesto in my 2016 Jeep Wrangler with the Alpine Premium Sound Package. The sound is awesome! My Rock, Blues, Ska and Celtic Punk collection sounds great! You can play video streams from an sdcard or usb storage while in park with the emergency brake on. If any of you have a 2013 - 2017 wrangler I can tell you the install isn't too difficult. I was disappointed with Android Auto but that's not Pioneer's fault. If Google wants Android Auto to take off, they need to allow third party navigation apps.
Pros: Integrates well into my 2017 Jeep Wrangler HPF and LPF Crossover adjustments work even with my Alpine Premium Sound Amp Sounds Awesome! User Interface was well thought out. Easy to Navigate.
Cons: Android Auto Nav is locked to use only Google Maps (basic) Google's Fault iDatalink Maestro does not fully map into all the Pioneer AVH-4200nex functions. AVR only works with the iPod connected via Uconnect.
All-in-all, this is a fantastic head unit. I got one for my 2011 Honda CR-Z, and my girlfriend loved it so much that I got one for her 2013 Honda Fit! PROS: - Good value for its features - Lots of screen real estate! Lots of display customization! - Detachable screen, if you live in an area where that's warranted - Preamps, built in EQ, and built in crossover produce great sound, even with my stock amp (350w) - Separate HPFs for front and rear speakers. Great for my setup, as I wanted more bass in the rear speakers than front ones. - LPF for subwoofer, if your sub's amp doesn't already have one. - Good/fast processing, unit is responsive to touch. No significant lag between pressing a button and the function happening. - Android Auto and Apple CarPlay both work very well. I dislike Apple Car Play, but that's not Pioneer's fault, haha. CONS: - Screen is barely legible in direct sunlight, IMO - There's no volume knob, just buttons. Personal preference, but I get why they did it (screen real estate) - The manual has some sloppy translation to English at times - The microphone it comes with isn't high fidelity, but I'm a bit biased as an A/V professional. There were so few cons with this piece that you can see I was really reaching for bad things to say. If you want a head unit that can play DVD's, run Android Auto / Apple Car Play, make/receive phone calls, and features some robust audio tools, then this is a good choice
This head unit is outstanding. The installation was relatively quick and clean. It looks very nice in our 2012 Toyota Tundra base model. The Sirius XM works seamlessly. Android Auto is amazing.
Pros: Bluetooth. SiriusXM. Android Auto. Vehicle diagnostics. Touch screen. More features than we will probably ever use. HD radio sounds great.
Cons: When you power the unit on, there is a welcome/warning screen which requires you to push the "YES" button to confirm and finish loading the system. It gets old having to push that button each and every time the systems loads. Android Auto only works through USB2, so be sure you connect both USB ports, or make sure your cables are plugged into the correct port you need for your specific apps. Glare on the screen - it would be nice to be able to tilt left/right toward driver.
Works great with K150 and mrr module
Pros: Customization options aplenty
Cons: Very tight fit in din kit. Seems that mechanics of screen movement are being overworked
Okay. 4 stars because I am still learning how to work the system. I am still figuring out the phone working with Uconnect and think I may switch to the Pioneer. Android auto is also great, however still working the kinks out on that. I am sure once I learn everything it would be 5 stars.
Hi, RAV4, 2009, JBL factory receiver, used the Pioneer with Maetstro RR and TO1, it took about 3-4 hours for me to get my mind around this install, then I talked with Tech Support to ask questions, then I began installation, I could not have done this without Maestro products and Crutchfield Tech Support, three calls in total with Tech Support, here is one glitch I had - the RAV4 needed a new Sirius, SVX300, the old Sirius was integral to the factory receiver, the Pioneer is Sirius ready, I used the new Sirius antennae instead of the factory antennae because I was told the signal booster for my old factory receiver with Sirius was integrated into that unit, another glitch - I did not prep by getting a total of two USB extensions for my iPod and Android, I added the appropriate cables for the iPod and Android to the extensions, when people use a charge only wiring for a device data does not get transmitted - some people have had problems with this so I am pointing it out, it appears everything is working so far, the sound quality is much better, per Rusty I also purchased new tweeters to install next weekend, as far as features there is no comparison with the old factory receiver, my 2009 has 107K miles, it just needed new electronics!
Originally this was to go into my Eclipse, but realized it was way better than my Kenwood DDX793, so I swapped it out of my 2008 Ram 1500 Crew Cab. Apple Car Play is amazing. I love the navigation feature, but I wish I could use Google Maps instead. The menus are a bit tricky at first, but once you get used to them, it becomes easier to use. I'm using just the pre-amp outputs because I have two amps. One for the door/tweeter speakers, and another for the subs. The pre-amp signal is very clean. There's no hiss like my previous stereo, and I have the gains on the amp much lower than previously, even though they have the same 4V output, I'm getting much louder/cleaner sound. The display is impressive, and doesn't wash out like previous head unit in sunlight. I also bought the mic for AutoEQ, and at first, it was not working like I had thought it would, but after some trial and error for mic placement, I was able to get a very good sound stage going. One thing that really bummed me out was the built in crossover. It doesn't work like I feel it should. I think there is some sort of sound shaping algorithm when using certain frequencies. For example, when I use the 80Hz low pass filter @ 18dB for the subs, the phase has to be inverted to get almost the right sound coming from the sub. They still sound out of phase. Using the built in crossover on the amp corrects this issue, which I strongly feel should be addressed. I have contacted Pioneer, and we are in communication about it.
Pros: Sound, excellent display, AutoEQ, Car Play, clean pre-amp output, able to match interior lights color, backup cam works excellent.
Cons: On-board crossover need a lot of improvement, only able to manually set Left/Right time alignment positions, warning screen on startup stays too long, reading USB drives is slow, head unit boot time can be slow
Love it. Great unit. Apple car play is perfect
Works great and does everything I expected, including Android Auto and Apple Car Play.
Pros: User interface is well layed out and very configurable.
Cons: Installation is non-trivial.
Overall a very good unit for the price. It has a lot of customization options, especially when it comes to sound profile and EQ. The auto-eq mic works very well and improved the manual settings I had fiddled with. The Maestro interface really helps keep most of the features from the factory head unit. Reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 is that the SD card (and by extension, USB media) is very slow at indexing, and shuffle is a little wonky. With 2845 songs, I heard the same couple rotate through in only a couple short trips (5-10 min of skipping tracks). Also, you can't shuffle backwards, something the factory unit did.
Pros: Lots of bells and whistles Supports backup camera(s), CarPlay (never used it), Android Auto Maestro support
Cons: SD card indexing is slow MIXTRAX is useless (gimmicky) No M3U playlist support (that I've been able to get to work).
Good value for the money. I wish display features were a lil more customizable allowing for me to display only what I want on the screen instead of things I won't use. Overall it's a great value and I would suggest this to anyone. I have it in a 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.
Pros: Hpf and eq are very good. Hdmi input to mirror phones is great. CarPlay with maps works flawlessly.
Cons: The screen is filled up with to many buttons when not in CarPlay mode.
This is an amazing unit with lots of options. With the proper speakers, the unit itself produces nice clean sound even without the assistance of an amp. Highly recommended and affordable. Only reason I did not 5 star it is because the Apple Carplay disconnects after a couple minutes, which I think has more to do with Apple more than anything but very frustrating.
Pros: Lots of option easy to install
Cons: Apple Carplay will not stay connected
What a big improvement over the Shaker 500 system that this replaced. Originally I replaced the speakers but little difference did this make on sound improvement. The difference was not heard until the head unit was replaced. This difference was between night and day. If you replace the speakers for sound improvement, you will not get the full effect until the head unit is replaced. I am still learning all the features on this unit but the initial impression on the sound quality is very impressive.
Pros: Great Sounding unit with amazing features. I am new to this unit and I am learning my way around the features of the system. Reading the manual gives you more insight of setting up the features and controls on this head unit.
All works great. Lots of cool features.
Pros: Easy to use and sounds good.
Cons: Glare on screen in sun
I really like this radio, everything works easily. The touch screen works perfectly. The only downfall was in pioneer's instructions for android auto and apple car play. There are two USB ports on the back of the radio they did not make clear that each one is specific to the phone you have. Other than that I like the radio and believe it is a good value
Lots of features, but overall the nag screen that starts up and needs verified every single time I start my jeep is annoying!.... no other players feel the need for this. And it completely negates having a splash screen on start up. Pointless and no patch in 1.5 years of release.
Cons: Install was helper skelter in my jeep, Crutchfield had numerous tech's telling me different wiring schemes Annoying verify in start up every time keys off
Great head unit, sounds fantastic and love the Apple car play! Menus are pretty quick and easy to navigate - easy to install
Pros: Car play Nice sound Does fit in 08 Ford Edge but face won't open with the dash kit from their site - looking for another one that will work but other wise I don't use the cd/DVD player anyways - just got it for Apple car play
I received this as a replacement for the JVC KW-M730BT. I am SO much more satisfied with this radio and Android Auto. My LG V20 connected and worked with no issued. I also bought the Crux steering wheel adapter, and it works as I expected. Pressing the microphone button while on normal radio mode will mute the radio, but when on Android Auto it acts like pressing the microphone on the screen. Sound quality is great, updates are simple, and it looks wonderful.
Pros: Works with LG V20, Steering Wheel controls operate as expected
Cons: None yet.
I ordered a factory refurb for my tundra, it has been great. I would like it better if the Apple CarPlay were Bluetooth, but it works fine over USB.
I installed this unit into my 2004 GMC Envoy. While soldering the wiring connections, I had a couple questions about the "extra" ACC leads but was able to get to a tech at Crutchfield on Saturday afternoon and get it worked out. Was actually able to use the other ACC lead to power my rear camera as well, which worked out great. The unit itself was straight forward to install and there was surprisingly ample room behind the unit once the support tab behind it was trimmed down a little. I really like the screen size for this unit and the sound to the front and rear speakers is surprisingly good compare to my old aftermarket radio. Once I got the sub hooked up, the EQ set to what I like, it sounds really good. CarPlay is a nice feature and allows some pretty good interfacing with my iPhone 7s. It isn't perfect by any means but hopefully they will keep providing updates from Apple and Pioneer to stream-line it some and get more application to work through the HU. By the way, the face IS detachable. You need to use the Eject button to get the screen to tilt away from the bottom. I'm sure one of the options will move the bottom out will be enough to get to the release button on the bottom under the screen. If not, one of the options allows you to move the bottom out a little bit at a time, so you can get the clearance needed to get to the release button. They include a case to put the screen in when detached. All in all I'd highly recom
Pros: Screen size, Sound, CarPlay, EQ adjustability, Available connections, Integration with my car
Cons: None yet
Great radio, easy operation great features....
Cons: My phone isn't compatible we it Android auto
Great head unit! Could be a little more user friendly. Car play And Bluetooth is great! Also mirroring my iPhone through hdmi is very cool.
Pros: Car play Bluetooth HDMI screen mirroring
Cons: A little confusing interface at first
So far so good, but wish the face was detachable and the sub control was one touch on the home screen.
Perfect fit in my 2004 sequoia. Easy install with the included wiring harness. Outstanding customer service. Highly recommend Crutchfield.
This is a great system with everything you want. My car only had radio and CD before; now I got Bluetooth, HD Radio, SiriusXM, CD, DVD, SD, USB, HDMI, and CarPlay! I even connected the Pioneer back-up camera. I did the first drive yesterday, and I got really disappointed; I could not see the screen in the daylight. This proved to be very dangerous as I had to lower my head a few time to see the screen. The glare is unbearable. Changing the brightness level did not help. Tilting the screen did not help. If you wear any glasses with polarized lenses, then it's even worse; you can't see anything!
Pros: - Lots of functionality and input. - Build-in HD Radio. - CarPlay! - Easy to setup.
Cons: - BIG ONE: Cannot see the screen during the day! Dangerous! - Navigation through screens and menus could be confusing at times. - AppRadio is as useless as a cassette player. It requires the expensive Lightning Digital AV adapter, and it disables CarPlay. It's unreliable and I don't really see it's purpose. - There is no on-screen keyboard (apparently there is, but only in AppRadio mode?!). Gotta type everything through iPhone. CarPlay Cons: Cannot read your messages. Siri
Installed in a 2016 Ram 1500. The idatalink is a bit tricky to get setup, but works, except for oem backup cam and Bluetooth mic won't work, yet? I was told it would by support it would. If it does I'll update. It retains all of the functions the OEM Ram HU controlled. Sound quality may not be top of the line but still is outstanding, especially over Ram OEM hu with LOC's. Car play works flawlessly "with the bypass" and phone plugged in, with my 6s+. You can get google maps gps on HU screen and verbal directions, again, "with they video bypass" otherwise CarPlay won't work in motion. There is no album art or song names even on a CD. DVD video picture is pretty good, a little washed out in sunlight, however, I have not had a problem seeing the menu or home screen AT ALL. Very near a 5 star radio. A few minor details. If you don't want to spend the $1000 on a gps HU, you won't be disappointed with this one. I would choose it over a Kenwood any day. Lots of options and settings and add ons. The HD tuner is not so hot but this may be my Ram antenna. Wiil not retain nor does maestro make an adapter to retain Ram oem sat radio. Still worth it while it's on sale. Very happy with mine.
Pros: Remote Carplay Idatalink Sound quality and adjustment options Screen brightness and auto dim at night Motorized detachable screen with sd reader behind
Cons: Won't display album art or song name from itunes or a CD The maestro unit can be tricky to get it programmed if you're a diy er and idatalink isn't open on weekends
Love it. Mirroring the iPhone 6s on the second USB port says not comparable USB however if you select hdmi as the input you can see exactly what's on your phone for YouTube etc. reauires extra cables etc but awesome feature. Great stereo love all the features and sound quality.
Pros: Great features great customer service and awesome deal.
The radio works great and I find I am able to get more AM stations. The GPS gives accurate directions, the mic works quite well and I am able to hear the audio through the car speakers. I was concerned about not being able to use the mic or hear the speakers plain because I have a convertible but no problem. I love it.
Pros: This is one of the best choices I have ever made. It does what I expected it to do.
Cons: The manual stinks! It is very hard to read and needs some attention in the wiring department. Tech support needs to be schooled on how to set up Android Auto. They don't appear to know that you need to install the firmware up-date for it to work if the radio doesn't have version 1.05
So far it works flawlessly. I purchase it for Android Auto, and it works. Sounds great and easy to navigate.
This is a really nice head unit with multiple inputs and outputs to suit almost everyone's needs. I bought extra cables to attach to the USB ports and HDMI cable so I could use them later without removing the head unit. I bought a hdmi/USB cable that fit in one of my cigarette lighter ports
Pros: Clear audio, endless attachment possiblity. I am hearing notes that I didn't hear before with old unit.
Cons: If unit is working on firmware 1.03 leave it alone...I went to 1.05 and now when booting up it tries to access my thumb drive and take for ever to boot...Did not do that on 1.03. Now I have to leave it disconnected on boot.
This is by far the best radio and honestly easy to install in my 2000 f150( after modification of course) instructions were great too and the free harness removal tools and dash kit. Was looking for the 4100 but bought this one instead and couldn't be happier
Pros: Awesome deck Easy mod Free stuff Android auto Aux Rear view camera Looks cool
Installed this head unit two weeks ago. It has all the communications and entertainment features of a modern car which were missing from my older vehicle. The included microphone captures clear sound for hands free calling. Pioneer has done a good job organizing the units many features in easy to navigate menus. However, the screen is quite difficult, almost unusable, in daylight and reflects a high amount of glare. I've purchased a triple A screen protector to combat the glare. I'd much prefer Pioneer drop the included remote control and improve the screen in future models. Lastly, the unit talkes about 10 seconds to startup and another 15-20 to begin auto playing music from my phone via Bluetooth. This is much longer than some of the units from auto manufacturers. Overall, I rate this unit four stars. I was forced to remove one star due to the screen. I would recommend this unit. PROs: - Loads of features - Menus easy to navigate - Clear hands free calling CONs: - Screen is difficult to see in daylight or glare - Long start up time - Remote control seems unnecessary
Pros: Loads of features Menus easy to navigate Clear hands free calling
Cons: Screen is difficult to see in daylight or glare Long start up time Remote control seems unnecessary
For the price you just cannot beat this head unit! I installed it in my 08 Wrangler and it fit perfectly. Being able to angle the screen when the top is off really helps cut the glare down on the screen. Android auto works great with my note 5, just be sure to update the head unit firmware and the Bluetooth firmware.
Pros: Perfect fit, great features, sounds awesome.
Cons: Wish you could run side loaded android apps with Android auto, but you can't. Not a fault of the deck though.
This radio is awesome. The screen is adjustable which is really nice. It does a a few seconds for the radio to turn on, but it doesn't bother me.
Pros: CarPlay, Front and back camera inputs, Bluetooth, HD radio, adjustable screen,
Cons: Start up of the radio takes a few seconds but its not
Great head unit. Android Auto functions great. Giving me access to the things I need, and reducing temptation to reach for my phone. Sounds great too.
Fast shipping and easy install. What I like the most is when you purchase the radio they tell you what other products you will need to do the install. The radio itself is awesome and easy to operate.
Fantastic radio... definitely improved the sound and ease of use. Nice to be able to connect directly with an iPhone!
I am even more pleased with this unit now that I have had time to work all the features and resolve some quirks I caused with a ground loop. I would recommend this for anyone that wants a quality AV receiver that works well with all types of media and is easy to use and setup. Install was more difficult than I expected but no fault of the receiver. Unit has worked great for several months and has performed better than I expected. Yes this unit has a ton of options and some are a little difficult to figure out and yes some of the options could have been better arranged but I am being picky. I would purchase this unit again. Once I got everything installed I spent some time adjusting the crossover and equalizer settings but it was worth the effort. No I did not use the self-equalizing option. CarPlay, Bluetooth audio and phone calls work great. I installed the microphone on the top of the mirror using Velcro, it can hardly be seen and sounds great on phone calls. My difficulties with the install were cause by the tight fit in my Ram 2500 and the fact I install ever cable possible except starlight radio and GPS.
Fantastic just buy one. Love the separate volume for alerts. easy to insta;;
Nice stereo, great fit in my Nitro. works great with my iphone

Everyone that has heard it tells me it sounds fantastic and I am very happy. 2004 Ram 2500 Long bed crew cab 4X4 Cumming diesel.
Pros: Worked well out of the box and I was able to connect just about any device anyone would want to connect. Audio quality is excellent. I had none of the problem others listed and has worked great in my truck for the past 2+ months. Boot up / startup is quick, touch screen is clear and responsive to even a soft touch. I recommend this Receiver and would purchase again.
Cons: Shipped owner manual is hard to read, use the web site PDF it is much easier to read. If you experience a slow boot up make sure the main power lead is connected direct to the battery so there is no power loss when starting engine.
The Pioneer 4200NEX is a very nice head unit. It was a little difficult to install for someone with little experience, but not impossible. The radio looks good and has excellent sound. Reception is very good. It is very easy to customize the looks of the screen and illumination colors. Android Auto is a very nice feature, and one of the main reasons I chose this unit. I use my Galaxy Note 5 for music and navigation; both work well with the 4200 and Android Auto. The price was a little steep, but, all things considered, worth is for the features.
Pros: Nice looking, good sound, easy to use
Cons: Price, difficult installation
Absolutely love this unit. My Mustang didn't have Bluetooth or even Android auto. But with this unit it really dresses up the interior. Makes it look factory.
Pros: Good sound, great Bluetooth connection
Cons: When inserting cd the screen hits the shifter so it can't be in park.
Great head unit! Speakers immediately sound better. The resistive screen has no lag and feels great.
very nice stereo happy with purshase
I love the pioneer nex 4200 it was the best choice.
Pros: For a product I love everything about it
I installed it myself with no real issues. I was my first time. Not too difficult. I recommend doing research on your vehicle and having a good plan before starting an installation. I had a fun time soldering and heat-shrinking. This, however, is a review for the product not general installation so: It's still early but I like it so far. I know that newer models coming out will have AndroidAuto wireless at some point. I don't plug my phone in every time I get in my truck (to utilize maps and speech-to-text) but I do leave the Bluetooth on so I can make/receive "hands free" calls. I was pleased that an instruction manual same with the product. I thought I'd have to download a pdf. Mixtracks is interesting.
I love this headunit it's everything I asked for and then some it has a lot of feature for sound eq and independent subwoofer controls the Apple CarPlay is amazing definitely get the maestro to go with it to retain steering wheel functions I couldn't ask for much more touch screen is very responsive and the screen is very sleek and bright pacakage arrived in one day thanks Crutchfield
Pros: Price screen
2013 Tundra SR5. Samsung Galaxy 7 Edge. Steering wheel controls harness. iDatalink module. I had the unit professionally installed. With the iDatalink module, I can now change features that required a service call and charge- change door locks, exit and entry lighting. It also displays engine functions and tire pressure. I had used Android Auto with an after market Bluetooth speaker because I didnt like the truck's bluetooth hands free system. This system certainly changed that. Phone calls, texts and map guidance are crystal clear. The unit has no problem "understanding" my voice. Music sounds much better. I switched the USB cable I first used to a 6 ft cord which generated an error message, "Stop the vehicle and check your Android phone". Switched back to the short 2?ft cord and it worked fine. I don't use the Apps feature for 2 reasons, I don't see any compatible apps I'm interested in and from reviewers the Apps system doesn't work well. The unit, I think, boots quickly. After starting if it hasn't finished booting and I shift it to reverse the camera comes up, the guidelines take a few more seconds, I don't find that a problem. The camera is stock. The small picture in the rear view mirror is sharp and clear. It's a bit grainy in the radio.
Pros: Sounds good. Looks good. Function wells. iDatalink added features
Cons: With a screen this size I'd like the option of using 2/3-3/4 of the screen for the map and along either side use the remaining area to display the time, radio and local weather.
Love this head unit. I had it installed professionally, because I was hesitant to go in to the dash with a saw to remove a support bracket. It was well worth the cost, as I don't think I could've done it myself in only 1.5 hours. The unit performs exactly as expected, with a few exceptions. These exceptions are simply a matter of MY personal preference. I'm using it with Android Auto connected to a Samsung Galaxy S6. The voice command prompts function as they should, and this is where my preferences come in to play. Although the Android Auto works well, I've chosen to use the Bluetooth functionality/control for Pandora and using the phone as an MP3 player or to talk on the phone. I just prefer the Pioneer controls to the Android Auto and I don't use all of the google functions such as the calendar. I do plug it in for navigation functions. The only downside, and I haven't learned all the customization functions yet, is that if you plug in to Android Auto; it will disable the Bluetooth control for everything else. As an example, I would like to have the Pioneer unit control everything but Navigation (Android Maps). This means having a separate plug in the accessory outlet in the car to charge (having to switch the cable back and forth or have two cables in the car). This isn't a big deal for me since I'm most often alone in the truck. The added power compared to factory makes the speakers sound that much better. Overall you will not be disappointed.
Pros: Functions extremely well with Android. Love the extra power compared to factory. Excellent Tech upgrade for an older vehicle.
Cons: Can not designate specific controls between Android Auto and Pioneer Bluetooth.
Very impressed works much better than expected startup is a tad bit slow not bad enough to make a fuss about though android auto and Bluetooth works flawlessly and the dual zone allowed me to keep my factory rearseat entertainment in 05 yukon all in all excellent head unit would recommend to anyone looking to upgrade
Pros: Mostly everything, great sound, great functionality, easy install
Cons: Startup is a bit slow
Easy installation, great sound and overall functionality. Installed in a 2005 Nissan Titan and it even though the crutchfield guide said it wouldnt fit. Noticed it was 1 thousandth deeper than the space in the vehicle according to the crutchfield notes. I'd recommend the radio and Crutchfield - what a great company.
Pros: Sound quality, user interface, features, fit and finish
Cons: Non really but it would be nice if this (and other) radios had a volume knob for easy access while driving.
While it has quirks, i bought it for Android Auto and subsequently, I love Android auto, everything about it. I also have used Apply CarPlay, and while that is nice, Apple Maps is mediocre compared to Google Maps. Pros: 1. looks great 2. instantly produces better quality sound to either factory or aftermarket speakers 3. Android Auto! 4. Crutchfield help is awesome. Cons: 1. Total PITA to set up if you don't have a lot of experience. Took me pretty much a full day and a lot of calls to Crutchfield 2. The Pioneer interface itself is not very intuitive 3. Pricey, when you want to keep your factory controls
Definitely brings new life into my Jeep winter. Fairly simple install after a quick call to the Crutchfield support in order to confirm the wiring harness splices. Works just as described, and flawlessly. Many options to customize it and fine-tune everything. I use it with android auto, and it exceeded my expectations on look and use. Very responsive touch screen. The extra power to my speakers is definitely a plus too.
Pros: Android Auto works flawlessly Responsive Looks great
Just installed yesterday! Thank you crutchfield and YouTube for helping with the install! First time ever installing a radio by myself and it went flawlessly! First time soldering also! Just got to mess with the settings now. Don't forget to buy a micro bypass for the emergency parking brake wire! It allows you to watch dvds or mess with Bluetooth settings WHILE driving. (Parking brake doesn't have to be applied)
Pros: Nice interface! Big screen! Sound quality is much much better than stock! Apple car play will be nice to use!
I Bought This Stereo Through Crutchfield because it was the best price I could find . The delivery was fast and the Crutchfield team was very helpful through and after the purchase . I would highly recommend buying this stereo it has all the futures I wanted . And I'm looking forward to doing business in the near future with the Crutchfield team . As now I want speakers and I trust that there expertise will guide me through the right purchase .
I installed the unit in my daughter's Mercedes C240. I have done several installs in the past, including other C-Class models, all bought from Crutchfield. This one proved to be the most challenging. The system itself is awesome and loaded with features that are easy to use. The challenge was due to poor or incomplete instructions from Crutchfield...which is extremely uncharacteristic of them. The C240 does not have switched 12V power to the stereo, which is not accounted for in the instructions or with the Metra wiring harness...leaving the stereo dead upon installation. I was able to troubleshoot the problem with the aid of a couple of Mercedes forums and solved the problem by routing switched 12V power from the cigarette lighter in the console to the stereo's wiring harness. Once that was complete, I confirmed that all of stereo's features worked great, except its ability to pick up local radio stations. Living in the mountains of WV, I was afraid it was an HD radio signal issue. Again, back to the Mercedes forums, I discovered the C240 has a 12V powered antenna amplifier. Looking closer at the Metra harness, I realized it does not supply power to the amplifier (solid black wire on the factory harness). I was able to run a jumper off the 12V switched power I used to power the stereo and that solved the problem. After several bumps along the way, this system is proving to be worth the hassles. It is a great addition to the car.
Pros: Ease of operation, large touchscreen easy to see in all levels of light, Apple CarPlay, audible text messages, voice commands for phone operation, works well with the Metra steering wheel control option
Cons: Installation instructions for the C240 left a lot to be desired (I am not blaming the stereo on that issue), stereo needs better dimming featureCrutchfield response on 3/6/2017 Chris, we're sorry you had problems during your installation. Whenever you encounter a problem with anything you purchase from Crutchfield, please contact our tech support team right away. Lifetime tech support comes with every Crutchfield purchase.
I am still new to Android Auto, although I like what I have experienced thus far. IMO, this unit delivers in both sound and appearance for its cost. Very happy customer!!!
Admittedly, I'm still learning my way around the head unit, but so far I am simultaneously impressed and annoyed... The individual functions work well. Apple Car Play is extremely user friendly and awesome, HD radio is pretty cool, and I have loaded up an SD card full of my favorite music for when I just want variety. In addition, my whole system sounds better after replacing the old stock stereo with this more powerful, new one. However, I ran into my first problem yesterday when I was attempting to use navigation to get around a traffic jam. Apple maps was giving me a completely ridiculous route, so I switched over to Google maps - which means disconnecting the phone from the unit (more on that in a minute). But, bluetooth was enabled, and I couldn't hear instructions through the speakers so had to also disconnect bluetooth to use Google Maps. It's possible there is a learning curve here, but it appears that not everything plays well together, and it was not a prime time to find out... Lastly, I had high hopes that I would be able to use other navi apps through the pioneer apps, but they are garbage and appear to have been completely abandoned by Pioneer, so I wouldn't bank on that getting better. Lastly, when I am displaying music from the SD card, "Hey, Sire" does not work. You can listen to other music sources while Apple Car play is displayed and the "Hey, Siri" works, but you can't also see what's playing at the same time.
Pros: Big display Sounds Good Apple Car Play
Cons: Screen Glare Pioneer Apps don't work for 3rd party navigation
So far so good. The deck looks nice, boot time of about 10 seconds, menu isn't overly complicated. I am happy with the deck for the price.
It looks great in my Tundra!
Very Pleased. Had difficulty deciding between the 4200NEX and the 8200NEX, built in GPS being the feature I was unsure about. I am quite pleased that the 4200NEX has delivered a full featured GPS/NAV through apple carplay using my iPhone. Though I am sure the built in GPS in the 8200NEX is fantastic, I found the carplay version quite acceptable and significantly more friendly to my budget. I am also very pleased with the car features using iDatalink Maestro (Tire Pressure, Battery Voltage, Open Door, Programmable Gauges). I have installed many car stereos years ago, but with technology improving I was intimidated with the idatalink maestro. I tackled this no problem though. Crutchfield sent excellent instructions, and iDatalink provided the diagrams specific to my vehicle as well. Crutchfields discounted installation gear was exactly what I needed and the right parts were delivered with no problems. Only problem I had was connecting my rearview camera, which must be plugged into the brown RCA instead of the video IN (resolved). And idatalink can only be programmed with Internet Explorer. I am very pleased with my new 4200NEX. My 2013 F150 retains SYNC and steering wheel controls. The dash kit gives a factory appearance, and adding a ford logo to my splash screen really gives an OEM look. Apple carplay is beautiful. Very happy with the Pioneer product, even happier with Crutchfield delivering the right parts the first time with no delay. Thank you
Pros: Loaded with features.
Cons: Dimmer controls could be better than just Day or Night
Very good head unit. One of the best ones I have purchased. Apple car play is a great feature
This is my second aftermarket radio that I've installed for my 1997 Lexus ES300. My first unit (now 10 years old) was an Alpine, which i also purchased from Crutchfield. These days most radios offer good sound and adequate power, so I focused my research on a quality brand with usable features. Useable features are those that allow me to take advantage of my mobile phone and those that make day to day tasks and recreation convenient and fun. I had decided on this model about six months ago, but felt prices may eventually be lowered to accommodate new models. I was correct, and six months later saved some money. The unit connects seamlessly to my phone via bluetooth. This is crucial because nothing is more annoying than devices that will not automatically connect when using bluetooth. Bluetooth connects every time, within seconds after the radio powers up. Connecting using android auto is also available, but I don't necessarily want the hassle of plugging in my phone everytime I get into the car, even though some the lesser used features may not be available.
Pros: Crutchfield always provides the necessary parts for hookup and installation.
I bought this to replace the stock head unit in my 2003 Ford F-350 crew cab. Installation was fairly straight forward although I did have to trim the dash opening in order to make it fit. The Pioneer has a lot of features to it but the driver for me buying it was Apple Car Play and touch screen. Touch screen works great and is very clear, set up is easy and the unit is packed full of features. The sound is very good even through 15 year old factory speakers (will upgrade later) with multiple preset equalizer settings and the ability to create your own, sound shaping to fit your vehicle isn't a problem. Bluetooth pairs easily as does the Apple Car Play though the direct connection through the USB seems a little louder than through Bluetooth. Now, I like to use Waze as my primary GPS app (iPhone 6s) and Car Play does not like this one bit. When connected via Car Play and using Waze while listening to the radio every time Waze announces something the unit won't automatically go back to the radio, instead I have to manually manipulate the unit to get back to what I was listening to which is a pain. No such problem exist when listening to music that's on your phone or streaming through your phone. Neither is there an issue with using Apple Maps, but that app is just lacking and rudimentary on so many levels given the competition. One other feature that is lacking is the inability of the unit to dim with your dash light dimmer control, the unit is basically set up for day/night only
Pros: Nice looks, bright screen, easy set up. Great sound with a lot of options for tweaking based on your vehicle and/or listening preferences. Multitude of inputs and out puts on the unit for connecting amps, external video displays, etc.
Cons: Screen doesn't dim with dimmer switch, only has auto day/night dimming which the night setting is still pretty bright. Apple Car Play doesn't play well with non Apple GPS apps (i.e. Waze, Google Maps, etc). With HD radio in fringe areas there is a noticeable difference is sound levels as it toggles between analog radio, analog HD and digital HD-would be nice if it was more consistent.
Seems to be a solid stereo. Combined with the maestro rr, it has a lot of great features in it. I don't think I lost functionality for any of my stock features with this radio. I actually gained the tire psi gauges. The screen could have better color and brightness. It definitely doesn't compare to most modern touch screens, but looks good enough. I read some people were having problems with the car play when using the USB extension provided. However, I have had no issues with it when it is plugged to USB 1.
Pros: Features Easy to set up Bluetooth Siri and carplay
Cons: Mediocre picture quality Touch response feels cheap Annoying startup warning message
Love this so far, have had it for about a week and everything is working great so far. Install was relatively simple and the tech support guys where great when I had a question and called. Improved the sound of my car's stock speakers and Android Auto is great.
Bought this unit after a lot of research and reading reviews. First time using a Pioneer deck, as well as a DVD receiver, but I absolutely love it. There is a lot of customization and it has the ability to do a lot of different things. Installing was fairly simple, but I decided to also hook up an amp and sub with this unit which took a lot of additional time but the sound is awesome. One issue I ran into was trying to get Android Auto to work with my Samsung S6. I had bought additional cords because I thought it was needed in order to make it work. I had a cable that plugged into USB2 and HDMI into a conversion box that plugged into my phone, come to find out you only needed to plug in USB2 to your phone and it worked like a charm (I had an extra Samsung charger to use for this cable). I am able to play videos from USB1 which I wired through the jockey box to hold additional music/videos. Overall, aside from the one issue trying to figure out why Android Auto wouldn't initially work, I would recommend this deck. Hopefully my issue/explanation will help someone else
Pros: Sounds great, looks great, lots of options/customization, easy to install
Cons: Wasn't 100% clear if I needed additional cables to enable all features with Android Auto.
Install was easier than I anticipated in my 2010 Corolla
Everything about this unit is amazing. With stock speakers with the Monsoon system is flawless. My only issue I have encountered is that my Bluetooth fails to connect about half of the time. I have a iPhone 6s, Apple car play is perfect though.
I've had this for almost a year and am very impressed by the quality. I really like the ability to add on what you want, Nav, back up camera, external amp, sub etc. absolutely no lack of inputs and outputs. I really enjoy the SD card slot, very hi quality from that - allowed me to try music at better than CD quality. This is for the 4100 model.
Pros: Sound quality, features, ability to add what I want
Cons: Interface is not an iPhone
Once I heard about Apple Car Play, I was intrigued. I needed to bring my 2007 Silverado Classic into 2017 and this did it very well. All the features of the AVH-4200NEX at very intuitive like using my IPhone. The touchscreen is just sensitive enough that it responds like a smart phone and the glare is almost non existent on the receiver. The only thing I which I could have from it is better EQ profiles. The AVH-4200 allows you to build your own, but as with most aftermarket receivers, the extra power they produce takes a bit of adjustment so you don't blow your factory speakers. More reason to upgrade!
Pros: Very intuitive and easy to figure out. The instruction book wasn't as much help as just messing with the deck.
Great Apple Car Play , Great advisor 5 stars on both
Pros: Apple car play
Awesome radio really opened up the sound on my 2015 Jeep Wrangler's Alpine system. Great features everything I wanted.
Pros: Everything about this unit is a pro for me
Cons: Takes a bit of time to connect the harness
I like it. A little complicated, but I'm learning more every time I use it. Being able to customize the background is cool.
Just fantastic it does everything and exactly what I want, I used the wiring harness that Crutchfield suggested so all of the vehicle controls work
Pros: Does everything
Cons: I would like a volume knob
Gone the greatest head units I have ever owned Android auto is great and one of the main reason I got this one
User interface could be better. Screen responsiveness is OK but not great. Try the 8200nex if this is an issue for you. 8200nex also has built in nav but is twice the price. Also not that impressed with Android Auto, although that is not Pioneer's issue. Sounds great. Overall, I think it is a good value.
Rock solid and great sound. Originally wanted to go with the Kenwood but needed the removable face plate with the Jeep. Fit perfectly in 2017 Wrangler JKU. Added the maestro pieces to keep all the steering wheel controls. Super easy install and delivery was overnight.
I've been shopping for one of these units for a while & finally decided on the Pioneer 4200,beautiful screen it looks better in my truck than I had imagined easy to use &I with more features that I could use. Extremely happy with it
Pros: Big clear screen, lots of features great price
amazing unit. The ease that comes with managing your music apps from the screen is life saving. I show the features off to anyone that will listen
Installed to 06 Acura RSX Type S and integrated to factory Bose system. After much research this is the HU I decided on. This is a whole lot of radio and very happy with the choice. Sound is much better than factory HU. I picked it up for ApplyPlay, backup camera, Sirius, HD radio, speaker phone, HDMI input, color display to match interior lights.
Pros: Lots of features and great display
Cons: Can't think of any
Great radio for my 15 jeep wrangler . really makes the stock alpine system so much better. Plus the added bonus of a removable screen .
Installed in a 2006 Grand Cherokee and I was concerned that I would lose some functionality with the stock amp. I had heard others state that the fader has an issue since there are only 1 set of speakers (front) getting hooked up instead of 2 (front and back) even though the amp works has 6 channels. Dexter mentioned that I wanted to keep the stock amp instead of bypassing it. Turns out he was exactly right. Used this unit with the Maestro RR and everything is better than I anticipated. The online instructions from iDatalink were perfect. I also added a rear backup camera with little trouble but had to use the backup signal wire to get it to work. The install is clean and except for a little shaving of the plastic ring from the install kit it all went great. Fader works great and having the OBD guages is pretty cool. Android Auto works flawlessly but I still have other items to learn. This is a long way from the factory NAV unit I had in there. Great purchase.
Pros: Flawless integration, sound, ease of use and installation
Cons: Having to use 2 different USB ports (one for Android phone and the other for updates/Apple).
I had a hard time deciding which unit to purchase. I wanted the Apple Car Play and a good display to add a backup camera to my 2009 Corvette. The unit sounds and looks great. Thank you for the good recommendation.
Great upgrade!!! Modernized my 2009 Hyundai. It now has many of the same features as my 2017 Hyundai but sounds better. I added an amp, powered sub, rear camara and sat radio as well. Woke up a car that was getting a little tired.
Pros: Touch screen and modern features like android auto and blue tooth.
Takes a while to learn. The manual isn't much help when it comes to actually navigating through the functions of the radio. Display is good and has a ton of cool functions.
I read the reviews before making this purchase. One of the criteria for me was to have minimal glare on the display when sun is shining. I made a good choice, as I have no problem seeing the display even when the sun shines directly onto it. As far as performance, this unit sounds awesome! Great dynamic range, lots of bass, and easy-to-use equalizer. The unit has many features I wanted, including HD Radio, SiriusXM ready, and Apple Car Play. Also has Android Play if that's your choice. I purchased the SiriusXM 300 tuner as accessory. It was easy to install and activate. The SiriusXM display on this unit is colorful and awesome. Apple CarPlay works great! There is a UBB cable included with the unit. I ran it from the rear of the unit then under the dash to the left side of the steering column. Installed a clip on the dash to hold the female end of the USB cable. Installed a KENU vent holder on the vent to left of steering wheel. Bought a coiled lightning-to-USB cable. Works great! Keeps the iPhone on my left side while driving. Since it's connected via USB to the Pioneer head unit, the iPhone is constantly charging while you use CarPlay. Easy to switch to the other apps as well, such as the SiriusXM or HD Radio. I ran the included mic cable from the back of the head unit to the top of the column on the steering wheel. Perfect spot. All wiring is concealed and I used Velcro tape to mount it. Used a Scosche dash kit. Fits perfectly. Easy instructions from
Pros: No glare on display, awesome sound, lots of features, easy install, easy to use, vol and mode controls on display and on bottom rail of unit
Bought for the SD card reader and he larger display. Very happy with the results in my 96 4runner. Added the back up camera for extra viability. Easy to navigate menus.
Pros: Big screan,sd card reader, lit's of inputs and outputs.
Cons: Price is a little on the high end to get the large display and card reader.
Installed in an 06 F-150. The supplied double DIN bracket and wire harness gave the installation a professional look. The actual unit makes using Android Auto great. Although AA has some quirks or perhaps limitations, it nonetheless provides a hands free option for using one's cell phone. Pandora, Google maps navigation, Google voice search, phone contacts from the phone, 'piped' straight into the receiver. Awesome! Also the ability to send texts via the Google voice to text feature of the phone! UPDATED 4/24/17: I purchased this receiver to take advantage of navigation and hands free cell use that Android Auto touts. However, from day one, the head unit would disconnect after a while from my cell phone and I get a "To use Android Auto, stop your vehicle and check you phone" message. I contacted Pioneer and they admitted that there exists a cell phone/head unit connectivity issue with this model. Their suggestion was using one of about 8 or so different USB cables that according to them have been "tested" to "work" in eliminating this issue. I've already purchased three of the listed cables in an attempt to eliminate this frustrating issue. None have "worked". I contacted Google, but it appears they are far more concerned with other issues. I've yet to hear from anyone from the Google community since I contacted them over two months ago. Crutchfield's solution to my issue was to issue me a refund. Which doesn't really take care of the root cause. But I appreciate the effort. The head unit was updated to the latest firmware upon receiving it. I've tried two different cell phones both with the latest Android version (6.0 Marshmallow). Connected the cells directly to head unit, bypassing the USB extension cable that comes with the unit. And nothing. Because there clearly exists a connectivity issue between some phones and this unit, I feel Crutchfield should place a disclaimer somewhere along the product description page, notifying potential buyers of this unit that they may face.
Pros: features That I wrote above
Cons: Android Auto does not yet offer the ability to list/view all your phone contacts when phone is connected. Android issue. Not a Pioneer issue.
Great product. Good bang for your buck. Does everything I want and then some. Apple car play is awesome!
Very Nice receiver! I was considering adding an amp to the 6 Polk marine speakers that I changed in my Jeep Wrangler JK. I already have a powered sub under the drivers seat and really didn't want to add another amp. With in minutes of installing this head unit my contemplating of an another amp stopped. This totally inhanced the sound and quality of my system. It has plenty of options to connect your phone, just pick your favorite. I did run the HDMI cable which allows me to use Waze among others. I also added a back-up camera. Needless to say I am very satisfied at this point.
I had originally had Crutchfield install a Kenwood DDx-9703S reciever in my 07 Silverado and had nothing but background noise from it. Crutchfield graciously replaced the Kenwood with a Pioneer AVH-4200 NEX. This receiver has NO issues. It's 5 times better than the Kenwood
Pros: It's 5 times better than the Kenwood
Been buying Pioneer stereos for decades now. Always impressed. They've earned a customer for life with me.
Pros: Makes the factory speakers sound much better.
Cons: Bit tricky and technical to get all factory options (chime, parking aid, satellite etc.) integrated.
Stereo is beyond my expectations works and looks great. Thanks to the Crutchfield team for great service and fast shipping !!
This Pioneer is working perfectly. It replaced an older Pioneer that didn't have Apple Car Play. The nice thing was that I could use the exact wiring harness I had with the old unit. I want to thank, Norm from Crutchfield, for sharing that information with me. It saved me al lot of time. Crutchfield customer support is the best.
Pros: ease of use, great sound, fair price
Nice receiver. Wanted something with Carplay and Android Auto. Both work well. The tilt feature makes it nice if the sun happens to affect the screen. Installed easily with recommended accessories. Adjustment of button colors to match you vehicle is handy. Still learning about some of the features and available shortcuts. Touchscreen response is good. Bluetooth works well. 4-1/2 stars.
Pros: Hands free. Bluetooth calls and music. Carplay and Android Auto. Clean sound and ability to adjust. HD radio is nice and clear.
Cons: Don't really care for the buttons along the bottom or the fuchsia colored Pioneer logo on the start screen. Strange choice.
Great radio. Installed in 2006 Toyota Tacoma (Dec 2016). The HD, XM radio, Android Auto, Bluetooth are great. I also got the Pioneer camera which gives a very good picture. This is an updated version of the AVH-4100NEX. I have been researching radios for over a year and IMO this is the best for the money. The New AVH-4201 just has the camera included.
Pros: easy of GUI
Easy to install, easy to use
I really like this new front end. Everything works as advertised. Looking forward to continuing enhancements of the Android Auto app (not Pioneer's issue.)
I installed a Pioneer AVH-4200NEX in my 2008 Chevrolet Impala SS. This is the first aftermarket car stereo I have installed in a vehicle. Shane at Crutchfield did an excellent job recommending this car stereo as well as accessories such as a Maestro system so I could retain factory steering wheel controls and obtain ODBD data such as tire pressure status. I love the improved sound quality that the HD radio provides, the ease at which it integrates to Android Auto/Apple Car Play and the blue tooth/handfree control for making phone calls. After I received the car stereo, I called in once to Crutchfield technical support for help sorting thru wiring harness connections and they were a huge help.
Pros: Excellent intergration to Android Auto. Great sound quality. Excellent Support from Crutchfield providing installation support.
Cons: I likely will never use the DVD/CD player. I would prefer it if Pioneer provided a version of this product without the DVD player at a lower price point. Other feature suggestions would be to have the ability for the radio to read car fault codes and body codes for vehicle diagnostic purposes. Shipped owner's manual needs improvement.
Just got yesterday 12/22/16 and I am impressed. Many thanks to the folks at Crutchfield and my product advisor. I decided to set it up on my work desk using a 12-volt battery because it will be at least a week before I can install this unit in my Ram 2500. I had concerns about some of the negative reviews thankfully I was not able to reproduce these problems. I do not have an Android device so I am testing with two iPhone 6s and one 4s along with an assortment of media storage devices including a 1TB, NTFS formatted USB disk drive. Out of the box the unit is clean and seems well built. Parts, cables, accessories and microphone seem to be of good to excellent quality. Was able to connect my iPhones and many defiant types of storage devices with little to no problem. Wanted to list everything here but only have 1,500 characters. OK what will happen if I have two iPhones connected at the same time, oh what the heck we can insert a DVD and a SD card. The iPhone in USB 1 worked with CarPlay the second iPhone just behaved as an iPod. The great part is I could start all of these devices playing something including the FM HD radio then switch between each. The media devises are paused when not selected. Not bad this worked much faster and better that I thought it would. remote works well but is more useful when playing videos or DVDs. I have not tested using a backup camera yet. Boot up time is about 6 seconds. Draws 0.001 amps idle/off & under 5 at a dece
Pros: Worked well out of the box and I was able to connect just about any device anyone would want to connect. Audio quality is very good to excellent. I had non of the problem others listed and look forward to installing in my truck soon. Boot up / startup is quick, touch screen is clear and responsive to even a soft touch. Many useful options.
Cons: Shipped owner manual is hard to read use the web site PDF it is much easier to read. Still testing and will update later. this review only has 1,500 characters and I needed a lot more to cover everything I did in my initial bench testing.
This is one of the best decks I've had. Easy to use not complicated like you might think with a touch screen. Crutchfield was spot on there review.
Pros: Easy to use
Sounds great. Love the option of either Android Auto or Apple Car Play. AM station is weak but tolerable.
The unit worked as expected and met all expectations. The Android auto was amazing. Make sure the unit and subwoofer are set to work together if you use separate sub woofer RCA cables.
Absolutely wonderful. I bought the Pioneer for my truck and an Alpine for my Jeep. I'm going to take a bat to the Alpine and replace it with another Pioneer. Everything about this receiver is awesome. Huge, great features, easy of navigating. The equalizing is amazing and easy. I don't like to refer to an inch thick owners manual every time I want to make a simple change, like the Alpine, and I don't have to with the Pioneer.
Pros: Everything. Easy to setup and use. Navigating, variety of options and quick easy connecting to Bluetooth.
The unit is the best I have seen. I installed it myself with and had no problems. All of my contacts were handled professionally and completely.
Pros: Looks OEM, far superior to OEM, Easy install, great sound.
Simply put the best head unit i have ever owned hands down. This thing has multiple connectors for aux, USB, apple carplay, android auto, plays movies...the list goes on and on. I upgraded the head unit in my 2010 toyota corolla along with a set of new rockford fosgate speakers at the same time. I was really surprised at how much power this unit puts out. I have amped my sound system's in previous cars, and my configuration sounds like there is a 200W amp behind the whole thing, using only this unit. The guI is also very user friendly and intuitive. In less than 30 minutes I figured out how to easily navigate around and do whatever i wanted to on this unit. The only thing i can really think of that this HU is missing is it's own independent navigation system, but of course you get navi through carplay or android auto. The other small setback for me was that you can only upload 1 photo for the splash and 1 photo for the background at a time. Not a big deal though. Overall, this thing is incredibly well built, functional, fun, and easy to use. I cant think of a single reason why anyone would go wrong with this unit.
I just finished hooking this unit up. So far I love it. It's easy to use and pairs well with my iPhone. I even got a message saying that the location of my truck is saved in the maps on my phone at all times. I would highly recommend this product!
Pros: Apple Icare, plus the ability to have two backup cameras
Cons: Can't think of any.
Update to previous review. New problems. Sirius XM radio barely works now. Always needs to be "refreshed". Gave up on that and cancelled subscription. Didn't have that issue with 5800bhs. Seems super glitchy with iPod touch 5g. Audio will cut out while playing music off iPod frequently now. To fix, must restart radio. Seen the song information display all kinds of crazy a few times. Sometimes the info bar at the bottom will have missing options for no reason. Recently at car start up, the radio failed to come on at all. Had to restart car for it to come on. A few days later the start up screen took a long time and went back and forth before the radio was able to work. My unit was purchased in September 2016. And it seems like its ready to die. Getting it checked out today because Pioneer has blamed everything and everyone else in the world besides the unit itself. Nothing but excuses. This week they are blaming the steering wheel controls. Last month they blamed Apple and the iPod. If the steering wheel controls pass I'm sending it in. Might also try an older iPhone with an older ios and give that a try. All in all, worst expensive endeavor I've ever taken on in the car aftermarket radio world and Pioneer doesn't even care...
Pros: Excellent sound, nice customization features. Android Auto is pretty cool besides limited Playlist scrolling.
Cons: Glitchy with iPod touch 5g. Sirius XM needs to be refreshed over and over. Pioneer support doesn't really help.
I've been searching for an upgrade to my low-end factory head on my 2015 Wrangler for quite some time. When I stumbled across the AVH-4200NEX, I decided to pull the trigger based not only on the features it offered, but also the positive reviews on this and other websites. I was very concerned with preserving my Uconnect functionality, but ultimately I don't even miss it though I still have it. When coupled with the iDataLink Maestro module and the CH1 wiring harness, I was able to repurpose many of my steering wheel controls when I flashed the module off my laptop. Installation of the unit was pretty simple. There are several videos available online that show Double DIN unit replacement on Wranglers like mine, and there were no surprises. Operation of the radio is great. It sounds good with the Kicker speakers I put in a year ago, and bass is pretty good without yet having a subwoofer installed. I have MUCH better radio reception than with the stock head, and movies and all the other gizmo features work flawless. Lots of stuff out there online that points out the nuances of operation- like the dedicated USB ports depending on Apple or Android. I'm still working on getting the AppRadio to work, as there isn't much documentation provided on it up front. I'm sure it is operator error more than anything else. Android Auto is amazing. Overall I am absolutely tickled about this purchase. Anyone considering this unit should DEFINITELY give it serious th
Pros: Good price, lots of features, sounds great! Navigation ability when connected via Android Auto or Apple Car Play
Cons: Little bit of a learning curve on the user interface Legacy factory microphone is not compatible- had to run a new microphone (supplied with the unit)
Great product, I have two now. The meastro mrr is a must for any newer car.
Amazing product, love the features and ease of use.
Fits and works like a dream, android auto the best.
The Pioneer 4200NEX is great, has really good sound thru the factory speakers with less volume than the factory unit. Although the Apple Play was a bit deceiving as to getting the apps off of your phone on the unit, it will only let you get what apps have been approve by Apple, example Goggle Maps will not work, but the Apple app for maps is an off shoot of Google. The allowable apps thru Apple are limited. The other thing that will drive nuts is your notifications that you have turned on, when they come up on your phone it will disconnect the Apple Play and you have to unplug and plug it in again, unless you shut off the notifications on the locked screen. This is an Apple thing not Crutchfield. I had Crutchfield do the wiring from the Pioneer to the factory plug and they did a great job with that. Chris the costumer service person I dealt with was great with setting me up with the necessary parts to make the transition. Overall I am very satisfy with Crutchfield and frustrated with Apple as to their limitations on the useable Apps.
Works Great,excellent product
Pros: Works Perfect
Easy installation. Called tech support once to confirm the wiring was correct. As previously stated by other reviews, it is not necessary to cut the metal support bracket inside the dash, simply removing the surrounding plastic provides enough clearance. Only issue I have found is the very low call volume, which is most likely because of the stock speakers.
Pros: Great customer service / support.
Cons: None at this time.
I am very happy with this Pioneer head unit. I had been waiting for a long time to upgrade the factory radio on the spare car we have for our kids. This model does what I wanted - it runs the GPS from the phone as well as the other things you would expect - handsfree calling, ability to play music from phone. And it does all of this for both Apple and Android phones, important since we are a split house. A few things to note: installation for a layperson like me took a while - about 5 hours. This was mainly because I had no idea what I was doing. I called Crutchfield 4 times and got very good guidance with virtually no wait time. For the Apple and Android auto programs to run, the phones need to be plugged in. So if you need to accommodate both operating systems as I do, then you will want to cords running out of the head unit. I wish one could be used and that it would detect which was plugged in, but that is a minor inconvenience.
Pros: Works with Apple and Android; easy interface
Cons: Auto sequence does not work via Bluetooth - must be physically connected.
This is a good unit. I would echo some of the other complaints about screen brightness. Android Auto isn't very contrasted to begin with so it can be difficult to use the navigation if you are trying to read the map. That is what prevents me from 5/5 stars. However, the rest of the unit is good. It's responsive and customizable to a nice degree. Boot time is reasonable considering the complexity of the unit. Attaching Sirius to the unit was simple. All in all it's a great unit. No need for navigation thanks to the android auto and apple carplay setup.
Pros: Good audio quality, fast display, customizable, good bluetooth quality
Cons: Screen brightness in direct light leaves something to be desired (a common problem with units like this)
This unit has the potential to be great but unfortunately it has a major flaw. One of the main reasons I purchased this unit was the Android Auto feature. The android auto feature with my Samsung Galaxy S7 simply doesn't work consistently. When the phone is plugged in, the app launches and everything is great until at a random time it will stop working and the screen will go black. A call to tech support was no help whatsoever other than telling me that there were issues with android auto and the galaxy S7 and I should call back periodically to see if they have been resolved. This information should be posted on the product page but it is not. If you are looking at this unit for it's features other than android auto then this is a very good head unit. However if you are looking at this unit for android auto and you have a Samsung galaxy S7 phone and perhaps other phones as well, I suggest you look elsewhere because as of now this unit will not work with android auto and the Galaxy S7. Very disappointed Crutchfield didn't provide this information on the product page as they are obviously aware of it!
Pros: Everything other than Android Auto
Cons: Android Auto with Samsung Galaxy S7
Best all around wow
After 7 years of ownership of my Honda I finally decided to bite the bullet and upgrade the head unit. Top of my list of wants was Android Auto and Bluetooth integration. After researching for hours on end I decided on the 4200NEX and couldn't be happier. Android Auto works effortlessly, just plug your phone in and everything pops up moments later. I also really enjoy the UI when not using Android Auto. The UI is clean and very intuitive. Being able to use my cars audio system to talk and listen on the phone makes the car feel new again and not stuck in the stone age. The screen is bright and can be easily seen even with the sun beating on it. Installation was breeze and took about two hours. I have two complaints. Crutchfields installation kit contains plastic brackets to hold the radio in place. The plastic brackets are pretty flimsy and the unit creaks when traversing over small bumps. It would be nice to have a premium bracket either made out of metal or built to a better quality. I will have to come up with some sort of DIY solution. My other complaint is that the radio unit comes with some really poor preset EQ settings. Would like to see a few more choices.
Pros: User interface is very clean and easy to use, the menus are intuitive, even with a resitive touchscreen it is still responsive and bright, the sound quality is much better then my stock unit
Cons: Lack of preset EQ settings means a lot of playing around.
I've been using this receiver for well over 2 weeks now and I'm loving every drive I go out on. If you are on the fence about this purchase, it's among one of the most affordable options. Installing the device took me two trips to my friends who had the right tools. It was my first install but wasn't too difficult to wrap my head around. When assembling the wiring harness on a Subaru Outback 2011, it's color to color and orange white to orange (this ties to the car illumination, when the head lights turn on, Android Auto/Google Maps goes to night mode, that's the only thing I can tell what this wire does so far). Solder and heat shrink works best. To my knowledge, you do not need to solder the steering wheel controls into the harness, but into the car itself. We're saving that for another week and will update the review with how to do that. We also installed a backup camera option. Installing this took the longest and we had to dismantle most of the back seat to do it. It comes with a wire (hot and ground) that's long enough to run from the back to your receiver. However, I would also purchase a spool of 16-18 Gage wire to run with the camera wire (this would be used to send the signal to the receiver when the car is in reverse, hooks into rear light of the car). This receiver has a brown RCA input for this camera, so plugging the camera into the receiver wa
Pros: Receiver is snappy to touch. Different options to change the background and button lights. Backup camera input. HD Radio, Apple Car Play and Android Auto.
Cons: I would buy the kit here, but the Crutchfield guide that came with it was almost useless. However, calling the support hotline helped us a few times in the install. Please Include A Color Guide On How To Solder The Harness To The Receiver, And The Steering Wheel Controls To The Car, Please!
Great product! Works great with Apple CarPlay. Screen doesn't like the sun much but with some adjustments can be managed
Excellent product. Installs and works as advertised. So far no complaints.
Purchased this head unit to replace the stock stereo in a 2006 Suburban. It was larger than the stock radio, so knocking out some of the supports in the dash was required. It also interfaces with the Rear Entertainment System (radio and screen controls) with the use of the PAC RP5-GM11. Apple Carplay works very well. Siri, Maps, Music, and Spotify work flawlessly as long as you have a good cable (Mine was faulty so it kept disconnecting). Haven't tried Android Auto as there was only one USB extension in the box. The biggest pain in installing this radio came from the parking brake safety. It didn't read when my parking break was set. Forget watching videos while in motion, you can't even pair your phone via Bluetooth if this doesn't work, and you can't just ground this cable out like the older models. Also, because this stereo doesn't have built-in navigation, the "set-on" method doesn't work with it. Despite the problems that I encountered, the head-unit was solid on a 20-hour road trip once I replaced the faulty lightning cable. The unit played movies/music/maps without issue during the entire trip.
Pros: Good sound Easy to use Apple Carplay works well Reverse camera has adjustable distance indicators Dual Zone capable so the front and rear passengers can watch/listen to different entertainment.
Cons: Long boot-up time Short on provided USB cables Parking brake safety
Didn't even know I was ordering something released this year, wanted something with sirius and bluetooth, ordered unit with the rebates, lly and free 3 month although I want more genres than the free so I will upgrade subscription in 3 months, and it delivers, still have to hook up the new pig tale with the parking brake wire so I can use andriod auto, I had a pioneer radio before this one and pig tale was same connector minus couple wires for accessories, plug and play in my case which was nice, in the older gm's mine being and '01 sierra the dash isn't fit so we'll for a big unit, unlike my dads '05 silverado his is better fit for it, barely fits with the wires connected had to jam it in there gently, but works well and would recommend to anybody.
Pros: Quick learning curve, beyond easy to use and ready for lots of entertainment through the this unit
Cons: Haven't come across any yet besides having to set parking brake temporarily to use andriod auto,
As the entry level model Android Auto capably unit, I didn't expect to be blown out of the water and I wasn't. Even so, it has managed to impress me with how well it can transition between different functions, including Android Auto. For the price, even as an entry level unit, I would have expected a higher quality display. The one it has would be more suited to a unit 60% of the price.
Pros: Android Auto works seamlessly.
Cons: Display quality is lacking.
This is the second Pioneer NEX unit we have purchased. Our previous 4100NEX was great (in a 2003 4Runner), and thus felt very comfortable outfitting another car with this line (2008 Tundra). The user interface is straightforward and allows quick easy access to a broad range of sources. I connected to factory speakers in both cases, and got significant improvement over the stock head-unit. Needless to say, if you really want to make this thing perform, replacing stock speakers is a must. On-board power has been adequate for our needs. Bluetooth features are quite good and behave as expected. We integrated a backup camera in both installs with very good results. Only minor gripe is the lag before it displays when shifting into reverse. CarPlay is great (albeit not perfect), and we use it a LOT. Android on the other hand is quite clunky (but DOES function). This is NOT Pioneers problem, it is more the state of the Android application thus far. Fingers crossed the integration improves with future releases. All in all, extremely happy with this unit and would certainly recommend for anyone wanting a high-end product at a mid-range price.
Pros: Easy to use Excellent performance VERY flexible Looks great in the dash GPS via phones displayed on screen
Cons: HD Tuner could be more sensitive Install not for the faint of heart with multiple sources
I wanted this because I thought it's a step above the stock unit. The touch screen is a plus but requiers a hard touch but I did see where I can adjust this. What I can not figure out is why is there a 1/2" line across the screen,Pandora has no on screen list I wanted 50's oldies I got 50 Cent. The maps are impossible to shut off so we stopped the car, started over again but only FM So I spent over $1000 for a FM radio that cant even power it's speakers. I truly believe the installer had no Idea what he was doing and could not convey all I needed to know. Now I will never know what this radio can do and find a better installer never again go to the big box store. I will call Crutchfield and ask what is a better radio or can this one be brought to life
Pros: Looks nice
Cons: Everything else
Not normally a Pioneer fan, but this deck does everything I want it to. I can use my Android Auto, and listen to my iPod at the same time. I can also use and see the screen in daylight, unlike the Kenwood DDX9903S I tried first.
Pros: -Android Auto and iPod simultaneously -Can see screen in daylight, minimal glare
Cons: -None so far
Expensive piece of junk. Display too dim to see. Virtually no contrast in Google maps. Android Auto integration is horrible. No notifications announced. No settings. Unit is huge and difficult to cram in dash. The face release button is not accessible when mounted in dash. Flash update through USB1 only. Really stupid design! Not ready for alpha testing or never operated in sunlight! Kills factory rear view camera.
Pros: Plugs hole in dash! Great boat anchor for fish tank!
Cons: Nearly invisible display. Android Auto integration leaves a lot to be desired!
I love this head unit except for one big issue and the main reason I purchased it. I have tried the galaxy s7 and galaxy note 7. Android auto will not, I repeat will not work with the android auto play. Did everything I could imagine and read about but still doesn't work. But still a very nice unit.
Pros: Almost everything
Cons: Android Autoplay doesn't function with newer galaxy phones.
It seems radio manufacturers are not giving themselves enough time to work kinks out of their Radios before releasing them. I replaced the avh-5800bhs with this unit and while the features are more flashier I'm not too impressed with either. My main gripes with this unit are that you always get the warning screen at start up. It does disappear after about 3 seconds on its own. Then if its set to iPod the music is automatically paused. You have to press play for it to start. This doesn't change if you leave it alone it stays paused. The album art is finicky. It shows up when it feels like it. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. This upsets me cause I have made quite a few custom album covers for my custom playlists and I love seeing them on the radio screen (when they do show up) this was also a problem with the previous radio. The biggest con for me is the radio shows songs in playlists from the iPod in alphabetical order not the customized order I've put them in. The only way around this is to rename songs with numbers in front or ask Siri to play playlists for you and they will play in order that way. Also they play correctly through Bluetooth but that Eliminates the album art. Also if you have an iPod touch save your money on the Apple video adaptor and just put your converted DRM free videos on a USB. It's a way easier interface than the adaptor. Basically the radio has a lot of issues and glitches that should be worked out esp. For the money.
I upgraded from the stock stereo w/ navigation in my 2008 Subaru Impreza STI and what a difference! The sound it much better, and I love that I can connect both my Samsung Galaxy S7 phone along with my iPod to it. It was fairly simple to install and get set up once I realized that I had a bad USB extension cable.
Pros: Integration with Samsung Galaxy S7 and my Apple iPod.
Cons: The screen defaults back to the main menu after several seconds when viewing the screen that shows the connected devices.
I had a pioneer unit in my old car and I loved it. I had heard great things about the 4200NEX and so I wanted to get it for my new (used) car. I use an iPod classic for music and a Moto X Pure with Marshmallow for Android Auto. First off, my iPod constantly has weird glitching issues with the head unit. I've replaced the head unit, the cables, and the iPod HDD and still no success. Secondly, Android Auto is crippled by Google's implementation and the head unit doesn't really help make it any better. With the most recent firmware update to the HU, when I receive a phone call and I'm listening to music via Android Auto, instead of a ringtone playing, all but my front speakers mute and still play the music. I'm not sure if I can recommend this head unit/
I bought this radio for several reasons, among them the ability to setup my android to display. So far I have yet been able to do that after several weeks. Radio - Extremely crisp reception and most importantly smooth transition to digital from analog (last Pioneer 6800BT was really bad on this) Sound quality - Very good even with stock speakers (upgraded after a week as that was the plan but wanted a before and after feel. Ease of use - Very easy to navigate around standard options but some items (Rear Display) take a few steps to control but still easier then standard radios for most parts Display - I love it and the touch screen has no issues for use. The responsiveness is great and I love how you can rearrange the main options so the most used are easy to access (HD radio/DVD). Glare is there at some points but easy to adjust out with tilt in my Trailblazer Rear connections - SO MUCH GOODNESS!!! only thought would have been to place al outs for the preamps together.... but the rear audio out in speaker format was great as now I have my kids plug in to headphones to keep my songs playing. Apps - well here is my problem. So far I have loaded up all the different apps and setup several connection types to (a Sam S3 and a Sam J3 2016 ver.) no luck connecting the head unit to them. More to come on this. As a side note bluetooth for the phone is great but it will not play directions from my google maps like othe
Pros: Abilities (extreme level of plug ins) Display (rich and fully stocked with options) Sound (just WOW) even with stock speakers it changes your environment nicely Connectivity is great even for the items I have yet to install (I have a new backup camera I tested and works wonderfully as well as a forward facing DVD play remembers your place even after removing a dvd for another (Kids love that) Plus great image
Cons: Apps are a little temperamental but may be because using a older phone and or a newer phone with wrong cables. (expect this to my issue not the radio) No Bluetooth navigation sounds from google from samsung S3 (again might be my old phone) hear is really the one big issue.... clock to small and stuck in one place. (increase of font and moveablity would be nice as the screen can be quite busy and it takes to long to find the time when driving.
The instructions indicate that there is a metal strip that needs to be removed which is not correct. There is 'plastic' that needs to be removed but this unit will fit without hacksawing the metal strip. The plastic is easily removed with a hacksaw blade and plyers. In addition I also purchased the connection kit sold by Pioneer for this specific unit. The installation was not difficult and the install dash kit included worked as it should. The documentation (both the 4200NEX and Connection Kit) could use a substantial update, particularly with respect to how to actually use the connection kit and cables. I spent many hours researching this unit for the ability to connect to an android device via android auto which included many promo videos from not only Pioneer, but retailers as well. All of the videos show how the AVH-4200NEX displays and controls the compatible apps on your device on the AVH-4200NEX screen with an apple device, and then indicates (without showing an example) the android device will function in a similar manner. Unless I do not have this unit properly 'cabled', I do not believe that this unit will display the same way an apple device will. Once Android Auto is running the only functions you will have control over will be Navigation, Music, and SMS/text messaging. I'm pleased with the performance of the AVH-4200NEX, but I am disappointed that even after exhaustively researching this unit it does not really do what Pioneer 'almost' say it does.
Pros: I could have shopped around for a better price but I doubt that another retailer would have answered my tech support call at 9:00/am PST the Sunday of Labor Day Weekend. Thank you Crutchfield!
Cons: Truth in advertising goes a long way towards customer loyalty, and half-truths only anger consumers. If you are looking at this unit for integration with an android device, it does work but do not expect it to do what the promo videos indicate.
I bought this unit to replace the factory navigation system that came in my 2008 Corvette (no existing USB, external inputs, or bluetooth...dark ages). The AVH-4200NEX had all of the base features I was looking for without having to purchase things like XM and navigation (unless I wanted them, available via optional modular expansion). Greatly improved sound quality with the factory amplifier and speakers, excellent equalizer system built in for adjustments. I also purchased the optional CD-MC20 microphone for the built in "auto equalizer system" that autotunes the system for the acoustic characteristics of your car (nice improvement) Bluetooth and Android Auto work great with my Nexus 6p. Also added a Kenwood CMOS-230 backup camera, awesome. System is firmware upgradeable and the process to upgrade is very simple. I used the PAC RP-GM11 to retain steering wheel controls, factory chimes and Onstar capability and it was basically plug and play. Didn't have to cut a single factory wire, just soldered all of the Pioneer and PAC connections on my workbench and then moved everything to the car and plugged it in. As always, Crutchfield support is great and they answered my specific questions both quickly and accurately. The provided MasterSheet was very insightful for console and dashboard assembly and when augmented with some online videos the installation was very straightforward. I am completely satisfied with this purchase and can't wait to show it off to my friends.
Pros: Flexibility, modular expansion, many inputs. Great looking and sounding, very nice user interface. So many expansion options and inputs. Customizable button color, splash screen, and display background make it your own. Can backup settings to external memory.
Cons: Only minor nitpicks. I don't like that each time you make any adjustment to the equalizer that it momentarily interrupts the sound stream. Sunlight and sunglasses make it hard to see the display sometimes (like a smartphone).
Good unit. Great features for the price. Replaced the Rockford Fosgate system in a 2012 Nissan Titan Pro-4X. Very glad I did. Install was a breeze. Mounting and getting it to fit was a bit complicated. There is a metal support bar for the dash behind the head unit. In order to make connections to the radio, aux port, and wired remote, I had to use a center punch and a hammer to slightly indent the bar to get it all to fit properly. The dash and mounting kit that came with the order looks and feels cheap. Ordered a different branded kit online to finish install. Much nicer. All in all, very pleased with the outcome. Would do it again. Would recommend to a friend. Would recommend to another Titan owner.
For Apple and android CarPlay the avh 4200nex is the best product you can get for under a grand. It has plenty of options and features that can take some time to get down. You can adjust the listening position for better sound experience for driver or other passengers. Add up to 2 cameras -backup & front facing or have dash cam with video out connected. Mixtrax blends and mixes songs together like a dj would on your storage device (phone , usb & sd card) nothing like shuffle with a visual interaction. Apple CarPlay is just a simple basic version of your iPhone. You can make calls, listen and respond to texts messages and use Siri. Limited amount of apps available at this time mostly audio only apps. You can't play video through your lightning cable, you would need the hdmi cable and apple adapter to mirror you phone on this unit. The screen responds well and feels almost like your phone. If you have wifi hotspot or wifi built in your car then Amazon Fire stick or chromecast could be installed in the hdmi port in back of unit. I added the SiriusXM SXV300V1 Tuner to take advantage of the new and extra features that my factory didn't offer. Like traffic and weather notifications; sports ,artist & show alerts. Plus it's free after rebate anyway! I needed the Idatalink to retain onstar, warning chimes, Bose factory amp, Bluetooth and satellite radio.
Pros: Well priced compared to other brands. Lots of customization and features
Cons: Siri won't work with factory Bluetooth... You have to install the microphone that comes with unit. Screen is not that bright You can't watch video or update unit unless the emergency brake is connected or you bypass the unit
If you are audiophile, this product is not for you. I found that Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S produces crystal clear sound on 24 bit music, but better choice than this product.
Pros: Very user friendly interface.
Cons: The sound quality is not very high, may impress average listener.
4th Pioneer Unit I've own, and by far this one is the best. With the help of Crutchfield, installation was pretty easy. Bought this mostly for the map features and with my Galaxy S5 and Google Maps it worked perfect. Also used my Iheart Radio and Pandora account on this with no problems. Sounds awesome with so many features. Touch Screen is very responsive and with my other Pioneer units I had to fight with them to get them to respond. Only thing I found so far that I wish I could adjust is the Screen brightness. At night time I often have to shut the screen off as it is very bright and lights up the whole car. But the good is much more the bad. Hopefully they come out with more apps to use with this unit.
Pros: works with Android and Google Maps perfect Sound is incredible Screen is one of the best Pioneer units out there
Cons: would like to adjust the Brightness Not enough apps yet
way better than I imagined, the rear view camera, bluetooth, interruption of music for calls and apple-play work great. Can't believe how it makes the apple iphone a part of the radio
Pros: works way better for more things than I imagined, your techs are really great
Cons: blue and white wire is mismarked and should be called amplifier and not secondary control. Without your tech help I would have been Very frustrated. Plus I plugged the rear camera into video, whereas the tech told me tpo use the brown RVC input. Makes sense and saved the day.
Installed a 4200NEX in my 2011 Chevy Silverado NNBS crew cab (non-Bose). Crutchfield says it does not fit this vehicle, but all I had to do was trim some plastic behind the radio to accommodate the fan sticking out the back. A dremel 561 cutting bit with flexshaft extension made easy work of that (just a little messy). The sound is much clearer than the factory radio, and it can get a lot louder than I'll ever need, but the bass is still lacking so I'll probably add a sub next. The tilting screen catches on the dash kit so I'll have to take it out and trim some. For now it's not much of a concern since don't use CD's or SD cards. I called Crutchfield customer support once during the install and they were extremely helpful and knowledgable. The iDatalink Maestro works well with the 4200NEX to incorporate vehicle diagnostic info and retain the factory features such as turn signals, steering wheel controls, onstar, etc. Apple CarPlay in the 4200NEX has been very buggy in my experience so far. It often gets frozen or won't respond to pressing play. Phone calls are forced through CarPlay and the call quality is just terrible. This is a well documented complaint. Bluetooth call quality is WAY better, but you have to unplug your phone so the call doesn't get forced through CarPlay. If you want a MicroBypass, get the one specific to the 4100NEX & 4200NEX, not the regular one. All in all, I still highly recommend the 4200NEX.
Just as I expected it. Love the android auto and everything. Only thing I did not like was at night the brightness does not dim as it does not have a light sensor.
Pros: Just as I expected it. Love the android auto and everything.
Cons: Only thing I did not like was at night the brightness does not dim as it does not have a light sensor.
Does everything it advertises.
Good in so many ways, but Android Auto didn't work as I expected, but then I was expecting Screen Mirroring from Android Auto but that was my ignorance. The only way you will be able to do screen mirroring on this deck is to have a "Mirror cast device" connected which takes out android auto making it unusable. So, I scrapped that idea and just went with the Android Auto. For the price of this deck, I expected way too much out of it. Fortunately it is just functional enough for me to use. Android Auto doesn't work with Uber Partner App. Maybe the next firmware update will allow this. The screen dimming in auto mode doesn't work, but it will dim automatically if you select "Time" which chooses a pre-selected time of day to dim the screen, or you can just do it manually. Other than my few gripes everything else works good and I am still exploring all this deck has to offer.
Pros: Lots of features, screen is very easy to see and adaptable, sound adjustment is great.
Cons: Screen mirroring needs a special adapter and it only mirrors your screen not allows you to select on the screen. Android auto is not fully developed.
Super easy install, especially when coupled with the correct accessories as specified with Crutchfield.
Pros: Easy install, bright picture, easy navigation, and looks fantastic.
Excellent piece of equipment. Easy install with factory wiring harness adapter.
Pros: Well built, easy to use, great sound
The Pioneer 4200 mix is a very great headset to have in your car to tell you the truth I was a little bit edgy about Pioneer in general because I'm very used to Alpine but I'm very glad that I made the decision to go with this pioneer head unit installation can be tricky but that is pretty typical I do drive a 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer GT that came with the Rockford head unit but the main reason I squish it out in the first place is because I can use Android auto
Solid unit. Replacement for stock in older vehicle. Good features. Sounds great. CarPlay is cool. Would like to see more flexibility in screen viewing angle, but still pretty good.
Pros: Features, sound, CarPlay, easy enough for a newbie like me to install.
Cons: Slow in changing between radio and apps. Seems to get "confused" once in a while (not often) but simple shut down and restart fixes it.
I bought the unit for my 2013 Subaru and had it professionally installed. Huge upgrade from the stock unit. I basically use it for apple carplay which is fairly well developed at this point. Easy access to maps, spotify and my audible service. Voice access works well for inputing destinations and music when using the apple music app but doesn't work for spotify. Overall an excellent option for older model car owners that want to
Pros: Easy access to Apple Carplay.Solid construction and the motorized screen is impressive. Removable screen for security. Lots of options for the look of the software interface and functions. Steering wheel controls still work.
Cons: Backup camera works but the guide lines are gone. Small delay to input when using the touch interface. You have to use separate USB inputs for apple carplay and android auto but that may be common to all units like this one.
I don't have any complaints, I absolutely love this system. It looks and fits perfectly in my car. It even made my speakers sound 100% clearer than how they sounded before. Delivery was easy and fast. I'm a satisfied customer and I look forward to purchasing another product for my car from you.
Pros: I love everything about it.
Cons: No flaws and no complaints.
This head unit really woke up the factory speakers. I paired it with a JL Audio powered sub and my stock equipment (Speakers) sound great. I installed this unit myself with the help of the Crutchfield Team. The unit actually displays things my truck never did with the stock head unit. I now get a visual of the backup alarms and it even gives a distance to the object while backing up. Awesome product.
Pros: Great visuals. Easy to use. Many many features.
Cons: This isnt really a con for the radio, but it was a little daunting of a task trying to cram all of the wires and harnesses into the dash.
Having Android auto has been amazing and the sound quality is outstanding.
Very easy to install with everything Crutchfield recommends
Pros: Coolness factor
Cons: Review camera quit working
I can't believe the technology in this device. ( you can't just call this radio it does too much ) The ease of use, whether you want to just select what program you want or just making changes on your settings. People that ride with me are very impressed with this product. I believe the one thing that convinces me to install a product like this is the help I get from Crutchfield, people are amazed that I'm able to do it but there's no way I could've done it without Crutchfields help. The hardest thing installing this device was finding that wire that connects back-up camera when you put it in reverse. But the tech at Crutchfield sent me a couple real good pictures to help locate it,works great especially in this long truck I've got!!
Pros: - The ease of installation - The several different choices of music or whatever I want to listen to from different programs - The ability to just pop out the screen take it inside with me for protection
Cons: - none that I have experienced so far
Loved all the functions and easy startup. Connected easily to my phone. Car Play started up easily. Not alot of hard buttons to learn. There is alot of soft touch buttons to access on the screen. Only complaint is screen's dull clarity. In the day-time it's kind of hard to see the screen from my angle.
Pros: Powerful, multi-function, nav-ready, cool looking.
Cons: Screen clarity is a little dull.
After 5 years of the stock stereo in my 2011 Subaru WRX, I upgraded to this Pioneer system and I am very happy with it! One of the key issues I had with my stock system is that the bluetooth (BT) was horrible. It would sometimes take me 3-8 tries before it connected (and it wasn't specific to my iPhone 5 or 6 over the years). My iPhone 6S connects immediately to the BT on this new system, and it works awesome when I direct connect it via USB to use the Apple Car Play! I love that feature and it works seamlessly with Spotify and Pandora for music. It also works great with the phone/text messages as well. CD player works great too (yes, I still carry around a few CD's... :) Because I have been strapped for time travelling for work, I had the system installed by a third party installer. It went very smooth with no issues. All in all, I'm very happy with the system and would recommend it!
Pros: - Very cool looking system - Sound is great! - All features/functions work as expected
Cons: - None at this time
Great head Unit, packed with versatility & inputs. I can't think of anything that you could not connect to this thing.
Pros: A lot of inputs for every configuration you could think of. Multiple USBs is especially useful Easy to use interface Auto EQ works great ( I don't have to install my Alpine sound processor as a result) Great Pioneer sound
Cons: Apple Car Play (Not Pioneers fault) overrides your phone so you can't be on two different apps. Whatever you do on Car Play your phone is required to follow suit. (It sucks if you dislike the Apple music app as much as I do. If you use the NEX player, which is better, you have to get out of Car Play to do it.) Can't get AppRadio to connect to my 6s plus. It just shows an X for a connection even though the apps are loaded on my phone. screen resolution. Better but still not great.
Easy, clean and simple install. With Metra dash kit the install looks like an OEM reciever. Very happy with the install.
Pros: Easy to use, simple. clean looking
Cons: Android Auto does not work very well with Galaxy S6. I do not recommend you purchase this stereo for this feature as I did.
Solid head unit. Lots of nice features. Intuitive interface, and decent touchscreen. It is a bit on the slow side. On startup, I don't get a rear camera (Pioneer ND-BC8) picture until the end of my average length (2 car lengths) driveway. Sometimes I get camera, but no guidlines (using the guidlines in the head unit). Sometimes Apple Carplay is slow to respond and hangs, this has happened a few times where I had to unplug the phone and plug it back in to get a response. The touchscreen can be non responsive from time to time as well. Overall I am happy with it, but harbor some dissatisfaction with the slow response/boot performance.
Pros: Looks great, sounds great.
Cons: Slow boot, slow backup camera response, buggy apple carplay performance.
I can't say enough about this radio! It works perfectly. After putting two new Kenwood's (purchased from another vendor) in the truck, I was ready to give up but Ziggy helped me with the purchase. Ziggy is very knowledgeable. He has been my "go to guy" for all of my purchases for many years. I installed this myself with the assistance of one of Crutchfield's service techs, Mike. Mike was able to talk me through the complete installation of the Radio and iDatalink. Thanks for everything to Ziggy and Mike!! As of now, I have a flawless system with great sound. I used my factory speakers and didn't need an amp or subwoofer even though I have them available. I just purchased a 2016 Jeep Wrangler 75th Anniversary. I have Ziggy on speed dial, it needs an upgrade badly!
Pros: Easy to use, Bluetooth streaming works well and best of all with the iDatalink I turned off the useless Ford Sync!
Cons: Haven't found any yet.
After 3 weeks or so, the 4200 has performed as expected. Car Play is great, but the unit do a reset twice. This is an expensive investment, but eliminates the need for Sirius radio. The installation looks great, but did take 3 hours and two calls to Crutchfield Support. Support was very good. I am now a loyal customer.
Pros: Looks, quality, features.
Cons: Reliability - time will tell
Great product. easy to install
Pros: everything that was ordered was exactly what you needed and was easy to install
Cons: needed to let you know of different option, like the parking brake module
I feel like my car is brand new again. Great features, android auto, lots of options for A/V sources, compatibility with idatalink maestro. Whats not to like? The touchscreen is responsive and has been easy for me to see. It boots up pretty fast. Overall I am very happy with my purchase.
Excited about this item, I love Pioneer products
Pros: Multitude of features
I kept waiting for the JBL Apple Car Play to come out, to save some bucks. Due to an upcoming trip I bit the bullet and bought the Pioneer when on sale. What a great decision! It works great in my 13 year old vehicle. Excellent sound quality. It is only limited by my rural 'spotty' cell service at times. When good service I love being able to hear my texts and respond by talking, play the music from my iPhone (very ease of use on this one). I've only had it installed for 3 weeks so I believe the 'Ease of Use' loss of one star might change as I take more time to study rather just attempt to intuit how to do 'this or that'. No hesitation on recommending this product, or Crutchfield.
Pros: Excellent sound quality, MOSTLY easy to use, many bells and whistles, multiple media formats, etc.
Cons: Hmmmmmmm. Haven't found one yet.
This is a great head unit, huge improvement over the stock radio in the 2015 wrx. The install was very easy and had no issues. I ended up buying two metra harnesses and stole wires from one to add into the other for the steering wheel control, no big deal at all. The best thing about the radio imo is the integration of a smart phone using android auto or car play. I am using android and it's really cool to be able to use Google maps and apps like spotify for music. I have a note 5 so I can't connect via mhl for the app radio feature but the android auto pretty much delivers what is important to me. I am planning on upgrading the stock speakers and will add an amplifier plus sub, can't wait!
Pros: Lots of features for phone integration Installation Sound quality
Cons: Could be a little brighter in sunlight
If you are looking for Head unit to buy, look no further. This Pioneer DVD Player has met all of my expectations and more. I purchased it after a horrible experience with trying to pair my note 5 with a Clarion unit. After installation I had no issues with playing spotify via bluetooth on the unit, the sound quality is even better than before. Android auto works like a charm. The reason this unit does not get five stars is for mainly two reasons. 1) Because the display tilts it was at first impossible to operate it without removing the front bracket. I had to shave the back of the back side of it (top & bottom) in order for it tilt up & down smoothly. 2) when you are using Android auto and you are on spotify for instance, the unit will only scroll down to only a few artists until it stops, a message will pop up to tell you "in order to keep scrolling you have to engage your parking brake". No likey :(. However, when you are playing spotify via bluetooth, you can scroll as much as you want, but it's a bit ennoying. The SWC works great, the images are clear when playing a movie or using the back up camera. I will say the Clarion was faster switching to the back up camera one the car is in reverse, the pioneer is at least a full second behind. Other than that, I have no complaint. My advice to anyone, try buying a new model if you can afford it, it will make the integration so much smoother. The Clarion was a 2015, the Pioneer is a 2016.
3yrs. in the waiting and they're finally hitting the market...car head units that play Hi-Res audio files! No more CD's flopping around the car. And forget lossy mp3's and streaming services at 320kbps. True, Hi-Res, wav/flac files are the way of the future! You won't believe your ears when you hear Hi-Res audio! I now have hours of commercial free, Hi-Res music blaring through my car. With 3 pre-outs, I can still feed my Kappa Four 4-ch. amp and Infinity 62.11(F) and Reference 6500(R) spkrs., and Bose SW. Navigation? Who needs a navigation head unit, all you need is Android Auto. Fantastic! I have my cell phone on my car stereo via USB cable with all the apps/features! The unit comes with all the best that Pioneer has to offer, which is plenty. HD Radio/Bluetooth/Sirius connection/Rear Camera input/rear monitor A/V out, etc. I really dig the detachable face plate. Pioneer did a nice job on the NEX line, they're a little pricey, but it's worth it if you put in a lot of windshield time. It's what hands free driving was meant to be.
Pros: Hi-Res audio file playback. Android Auto. 3-pre-amp outputs. Detachable face-plate. Nice big screen with big letting.
Cons: None yet...
My issues are not with the radio, but with Ford and Apple. Ford does not supply switched 12v at the radio so it is a pain to have to locate, fuse, and run switched 12v for the radio. Worse, Apple CarPlay does not support apps other than the standard Apple apps. I wanted this as a navigation system using Google maps. IMHO Apple Maps are the Worst! I've lived in my development for 3 years, but Apple maps does not know about it yet. You cannot use Google maps (the Best!) with this or any other radio and an iPhone. I'll just use the dashboard holder for my iPhone.
Pros: Great look, easy to use
Cons: Can't use Google maps with iPhone. Apparently you can use Google maps if you are using an Android phone and the Android interface to the 4200NEX
Very cool stereo. We got it for the Android Auto feature which works pretty well. It's slick, just wish I didn't have to plug in to use it. With a little sanding and creative wire routing I was able to make this fit in my Yukon. It's very tight, but the flip down screen works well. Had to re flash the iDatalink to get it to work correctly, but the steering wheel controls work well. And I'm able to view engine performance and diagnostics in the pioneer. Very cool. Haven't tried to play a movie yet, but I'm sure it works. Hard to see the screen in direct sunlight, but that's true of every electronic device. Sounds way better than stock. I like it a lot.
Pros: -Good sound. -Android Auto. -Apple Car Play ?? -OBD2 display -Cool folding faceplate -Looks nice
Cons: -Android Auto through Bluetooth would be nice -Learning curve to navigate screens -Radio screen is boring
Pioneer makes great electronics and this head unit is no exception. I have been using this head unit for about a week now and do not regret buying it. After I let my wife play with the head unit she wants one now for her rav4! I love that I can plug in my iPod classic using a special cable and have all my music at my finger tips which I can even control with my steering wheel controls. The touch screen is very responsive and the screen is pleasant to look at. My wife and I connected both our phones via bluetooth to see what would happen and we were really impressed! She connected her iphone via bluetooth to stream music from spotify and my android phone was connected via bluetooth and was still able to make and receive phone calls.
Pros: Versatile Customizable Great looking screen Seamless Connectivity Responsive
Cons: Some Settings are hard to find. I wish Android phones and iphones could be plugged into the same USB port for connectivity but it's not a big deal at all. Would be nice if Pioneer supplied more cables to connect your devices to the head unit.
I noted that each item I got from my oder has a separate button for review. So I'll start with the head unit (HU). I used to have a Pioneer DVD player in another car, and this one did not disappoint. My GTI comes with separate tweeter and woofer on all doors. With OEM radio it was... meh. Hard to hear highs unless I cranked up the highs. The doors really vibrated when there were supposed to be lows, but I felt the door vibrate more than I heard. So with OEM door speakers and powered subwoofer in the back, and adjusting the HU crossover points, I get almost too much highs, great mid and powerful lows. Pioneer has some preset EQ settings and I use the flat setting most of the time for most kinds of music - classical, rock, blues.Just like my previous Pioneer HU in another car, the HU made a large difference in sound. The other thing I like is that the HU automatically links bluetooth to my iPhone. If I left the HU playing Pandora, then Pandora starts playing automatically when I start the car in the mornings. Phone calls work great. Getting a DVD or CD into the HU is more work because the face is removable, so I have to hit a button and the face plate swings out of the way to show the optical media slot behind it. Having 2 USB inputs is great. I have a USB stick on one and plug my iPhone in the other for Apple Play. If a low cost Hyundai Elantra could have an Apply Play HU, then I wanted one too. The Bluetooth link works much much better tha
Pros: Separate volume settings for each source, 2 USB inputs, Apple Play, decent sound, compatibility with iData Maestro, umpteen inputs and outputs, HD radio, choice of colors and themes on display
Cons: Lots of wires to crimp. Don't make a mistake !
The Pioneer AVH4200NEX is a great head unit for the money. Great control over the sound, easy to use features and not bad video. I found some fitment issues with my setup. I put it into an 07 Nissan Xterra and found once I got the unit in there was a 1/4" - 1/2" gap at the bottom. There does not seem to be a real face trim plate for my application so I rigged a piece of plastic to the back of my dash trim to hide the gap. Once you can get past the installation issues, it is a very nice head unit.
Pros: Very user friendly, great sound clarity with all of the sound settings, some features to personalize the screen, can use Apple Car Play (the best way to use it I believe) Android Auto (Only If Your Smart Phone Uses The Latest OS - Lollipop and good luck finding that!!) or just use Bluetooth. Many choices of sources for listening to music. The list goes on...too many to list them all.
Cons: Amount of Bass at low volume is low, picture adjustment settings are minimalist, additional cable kits Are required to use the separate phone features...do some homework for your particular setup.
For starters, I didn't need a navigation head unit as I use google maps (Android) for all my location needs. That being said, I wanted a unit that utilized Android Auto and this one did. In addition, I wanted HD Radio for obvious audio quality and station variety (Secondary stations, et al.), this unit had that as well. Finally, I wanted a removable face as I own a 2009 Jeep Wrangler JK (2-door) Soft Top, again, I was not disappointed. I also purchased the Sirius Satellite receiver to install at the same time. All-in-all, the installation was a Breeze!! Seriously, with the included instructions from how to break down your dash assembly quickly (and without damage to retainer clips or surrounding dash areas) to calling customer service to make sure the wiring harness was correctly wired (by the way, all wire colors are like for like so harness wiring has Never been easier!!), I had the entire unit wired and installed, perfectly, in less than one and a-half hours! The sound quality coming from my stock speakers is like night and day! The unit functions very well by touch, not to soft nor hard, just the right amount of pressure to successfully navigate the interface. Only one drawback is the Bluetooth/hands-free microphone... there is no place to properly install in a soft top Jeep that will provide clear sound for the person on the other end of your phone calls. This isn't Pioneer's fault in the least. Jeep= loud driving. I give this an A+++ recommend to every
Pros: Amazing sound quality, ease of use, large screen, abundance of features, and fun to use! Installs easily and looks like it was factory provided.
Cons: If you own a Jeep Wrangler, the Only issue is placement of the microphone. But, remember, this has nothing to do with Pioneer, it is just a fact of live for Jeep owners with Soft Tops, there is just a louder than normal driving experience.
Was looking for an easy way to get CarPlay in my car and this head unit fit the bill! With my factory speakers, I feel like I lost a little bit of low end with this unit, but everything sounds much tighter now compared to my old factory head. If you're looking for a great looking way to get CarPlay or Android Auto in your car, I'd highly recommend this unit.
Pros: CarPlay, Easy to us EQ, HD Radio
Cons: Screen can be a little difficult to read in direct sunlight
I purchased this stereo for my sons car based on the great reviews and Apple CarPlay. Apple CarPlay works great with Pandora & Spotify! I love that he can use the maps from his iPhone and have them displayed on the screen. From what I can see, you can listen to the radio, cd or Pandora while viewing the maps but not Spotify. The sound from Spotify turns off when you want to display the maps. Not sure why, maybe some fiddling with the stereo and I can figure out if there is a way. From the photos on the website, it looks like you can have a small display of the current driving route but I haven't been able to replicate the picture. The music sounds fantastic and the equalizer band allows you to tune it in detail. Siri functionality works like a charm. The display is a little hard to see because it is reflective, especially on a sunny day. Overall I still give it 5 stars. The pros greatly outweigh the very few cons. I'd buy another stereo if I had the need for one in one of my other vehicles. I'm a Kenwood guy for life, but this Pioneer melted my heart! LoL
Pros: Apple CarPlay, Siri, EQ, display looks awesome [day or night], touch screen is responsive, iPhone responsiveness is fast, steering wheel controls work fantastic, detachable face.
Cons: Display is a little hard to see because the screen is reflective
I am so glad I did it. It takes away the desire to go buy a new car and save you lots of money. I bought from Crutchfield because I knew I could trust their technical support. Those guys are easily reachable, by phone, email and very helpful and friendly. They emailed pictures to help me understand specifics about my car or wiring. I am most impress with the sound quality of the 4200NEX, the original radio never sounded that good, not even close. I am not technical but decided doing the project with my son and make it a fun experience. Besides we now know how to take it apart again in 1/10 of the time. Next will be a backup camera. I reviewed lots of youtube video from different people which was very informative. I have learned to solder which is easy and a much better way to go then crimping wires. Many thanks to the tech support team.
Pros: -Car Play is lovely -Sound is amazing -HD Radio Tuner a nice plus
Cons: None yet.
I wanted a receiver with CarPlay and one that would let me retain my steering wheel controls as well. This receiver does both and so many more things. It works great and I love it. CarPlay is so nice to have and this receiver has a lot more power than my factory receiver. As always Crutchfield was great to work with and answered all my questions. I had two issues when installing it and they were able to solve my issues very quickly.
Cons: Can't think of any at the moment.
Great product. Great sound. Easy installation. Seamless integration with iMaestro.
it's a pioneer the best in my book
Pros: has everything I need
You must use the TO2 Harness in a 2016 Toyota Rav4, not the TO1. It also says the square plug is not needed, but it is needed for the factory usb in the front. I plugged the usb end of the plug into my Android Auto USB (USB2) of the Pioneer 4200 NEX and it worked. Everything is retained from factory except the factory Bluetooth mic which you would think it would be possible. This includes the rear camera, steering wheel controls, usb, aux, and it reads the vehicle computer very well. The factory settings controlled through the factory head unit (for door lock and light options) are retained and carried over into the settings. It also shows my tire pressure where as it did not do this factory. I have the LE model which does not have the read out but apparently the sensors are still there. It shows RPM, MPH, Engine Load, Coolant Temp, Fuel/Air Ratio, to just name a few on the dash unit.
Pros: Does everything but retain Bluetooth Mic, which all seem to have this issue.
I really like this head unit. It pushes out great sound. I love using Android Auto while driving. Adding a backup camera was plug and play easy. The detachable face is great.
Pros: Android Auto, Bluetooth Calling, Bluetooth music play back, Easy to configure, Menus are easy to navigate. Lots of expandability.
Cons: The only issue I had was with the usb ports. The top port does not work with my Nexus 5x. After testing a few cables I finally figured out that the 2nd port was the one to use.
I was looking for a headset to help me pay attention to driving instead of touching my phone. Also...I was contemplating buying a new car. So instead of a new car I upgraded my trusty Foz. Additionally my wish to stay more alert when drivi was granted. I was able to map the headset to my steering wheel. I can now make and take calls without taking my eyes off the road or take my hands off of the wheel. CarPlay works well. I can ask Siri to make a call...play a song...take me home without a problem. The only downfall to CarPlay is that there are not many apps yet, it doesn't support waze, and you can't sort the apps on the screen. The CarPlay connection is wired and not wireless. I purchased an in dash usb extension and mounted it professional in the shelf under the radio. I then just plug in my charging cable and set the phone wherever. It has Bluetooth but that is for music and telephone connection only. Wiring the harness was not difficult if you take your time and read the directions that Crutchfield provided. I did not like that I had to cut into the cars wires...but I figured...why not?!
Pros: Works great Great menu Built with quality Great features Easy to use and install Makes an old car feel great again
I have this running on my Rav4 for a month now. Install was easy (with iDataLink Maestro RR). 4200NEX paired with Maestro RR can display gauges (rpm, speed, load, etc), door ajar, tire pressure and temperature (not reading spare tire). Work really good with Android Auto connected to Nexus 5x (Marshmallow 6.01), in this mode I played Google music and Pandora. Home screen in Android Auto is nice, forecast, phone messages, music, and basic Map (direction). In Map mode it will give you more detail of it. In Music mode you can give thumb up/down on your Pandora/Google music stations. You can go back and forth from Android Auto mode to Pioneer mode, if you want to access something outside Android Auto. I don't have any issue so far. Outside Android Auto (Pioneer mode), HD Radio sound is very good. Some stations don't get the Title/Artist of the song, it's problem with the station not 4200NEX, sometimes I also got the Album art of the song displayed, I love that feature. BT mode is very good, fast connection, no issue here. Pandora mode, little slow making connection to the app, either the problem with this unit or the Pandora app on the phone. The sound connection is via BT in this mode, song Title/Artist sometimes not displayed, when this occurred if I switched to BT mode, then immediately I got the Artist/Title. I feel the problem is in 4200NEX in Pandora mode. In BT mode I can't give thumb up/down btw only in Pandora mode/Android Auto I can do that. Backup camera also works.
Pros: Android Auto works as advertised with Nexus 5x. Easy install (with Maestro RR+ T01 harness). Look really nice (+American International dash kit). Sound is clear, crisp, enough power (but don't expect big hit without sub woofer), I use Infinity reference component (front) and 2-way reference (back).
Cons: I would give 5 stars but I get the issue in Pandora mode which keep me out of it. But since I use Android Auto most of the time this is minor issue. And I can still use Pandora in Android Auto mode anyway. iDataLink wiring diagram stated Vehicle Speed Sensor (PINK wire) is connected to Pioneer, however I think that is only true on model with GPS, no pink wire on 4200NEX.
This is a great head unit and as others have mentioned you don't need Nav when your phone will provide it. The sound quality is amazing. I first put this in while using just the stock speakers. Sounded way better. Then a few days later put in the new Alpine speakers Crutchfield recommended. WOW! Love it! But, I lost to much low end. Soooo, I had to install a sub! ;) I'm looking forward to many years of music enjoyment from this system.
Pros: Install was fairly easy. Crutchfield is great. Sound quality.
Cons: I wish the sound settings would attach to a source and not be universal. When I added the sub I couldn't use the crossover settings for the sub from the head unit. Had to disable from the deck and adjust from amp.
Great deck, install is straight forward. Great value for the money, why buy one with navigation when all you have to do is connect your android to the usb, and use google maps?
This unit was very straight forward to install. The biggest question for me was figuring out that the steering wheel control 3.5m Plug went into the "Wired Remote" jack in the rear of the system. Screen is bright and clear, and motorization of it works well to keep the unit flush with dash. Screen is very responsive - faster than I was anticipating. Carplay works great. USB 2 (typically for android phones) can still be used with Apple devices - it just reads as an iPod. Bluetooth connection was simple and works very well. Bluetooth call quality with included microphone is very good. Overall very pleased with this unit.
The 4200Nex along with the associated installation components is performing very well. The Android Auto has worked very well giving access to a very good version of google maps ( not full featured but still very good with traffic updates.) The only low point has been reception of non-HD radio stations which can be a little troublesome. It is taking me awhile to get used to the lack of a volume dial but with the steering wheel controls still working I'm sure I'll adapt.
Pros: Android Auto (maps works well)
Cons: non-HD radio station issues
Pros: Just about everything about this unit. Love the gauges and no problem with BT or usb connection
Cons: Very tight fitting with USB and antenna adapter.
I have been running my 4200 for about three weeks now, and I placed my order as soon as it was released on Crutchfield. The installation was pretty easy, I had more problems with the Subaru 28 pin harness, however it did not affect the functionality of the head unit. Anyway, the unit itself is stunning, I replaced my 8500 for it and I am glad I did. The android auto is a very nice feature, I use it every time I'm in the vehicle. I run the USB from the center console and have the phone sitting nicely by the park brake. Make sure you download the Android Auto app! I didn't at first but soon corrected for this simple mistake. As usual, the wiring harnesses from Crutchfield were super simple to install. I have everything on mine other than the Maestro RR SWC unit, and that is on my list. The Metra kit was a little more difficult, as the way it is designed, the face is recessed a little more than I would have preferred, however it is good. The trim does not match the WRX or STi. Some people on NASIOC have wrapped it with 3M vinyl, and I have to say some of their work looks fantastic. The trim is to match the regular Impreza or XV. I really enjoy the ability to switch between any form of media and be able to view the maps, this is something that App Radio could not do, and Android Auto is a 100% improvement. Subaru owners should who is interested should check out NASIOC on how to set up the HU. I learned how to fix my 28 pin and back u
Pros: Fast, responsive, clean.
Cons: It needs Waze running for maps. Although it is supposed to be on the way soon.
I installed this 3 days ago and absolutely love it. The normal features you would expect like HD Radio, disc play, customizable interface, Bluetooth, etc. work fine. Pioneer had all those down years ago. I called Crutchfield twice for clarifications with the install, and they were as helpful as ever. That's their value add, and I will always buy from them. Now for the reason I bought this receiver: Android Auto. It really works well. Voice commands and searches for destinations with navigation are very quick. The touchscreen is quite responsive if you want to move around on the map. I'm mostly a podcast listener, and Pocket Casts works flawlessly, as do Amazon MP3 and the stock Google music app. In case you haven't read it elsewhere, your phone needs to be connected via USB for Android Auto, so think about where your USB cable will terminate and your phone will sit while you drive. You don't ever need to look at the phone screen, but you want it somewhere convenient yet out of the way since you'll be plugging in each time you get in your car. I drilled a small hole in an alcove right in front of my gearbox and fished the cable through to the back of the receiver, which was wasted space in my car anyway. And to set it up the Parking Brake cable on the back of the receiver needs to be grounded somewhere or you'll keep getting a message to stop your car and engage the parking brake. I put the only other gotcha to getting it working in the Cons section.
Pros: If you are an Android user, Android Auto is what you've been waiting for. ( I own no stock in Google). It's fabulous. Responsive, bright touchscreen Great support from Crutchfield, as you would expect.
Cons: I have one medium and one small complaint, but both are with Google and not with Pioneer. 1. In Android 6 Marshmallow, the default mode for USB is Charge Only. Even with the Developer Options in my Samsung S7, I can't change it to always be MTP, which is what it has to be for Android Auto to launch. It wasn't that way with Android 5 Lollipop. Having to hit that toggle each time you get into your car is annoying. 2. Speed limits aren't listed on the navigation app, which would be nice.

MOSFET50 Internal Amplifier: This receiver is equipped with a 50 watts x 4 (peak) MOSFET amplifier for low distortion, high power output. The amplifier is strong enough to power small subwoofers to moderate volume levels in compact cars and pickups. For higher volume levels from subwoofers, an optional amplifier may be connected to the preamp outputs.
Note: The power specifications for the AVH-4200NEX are compliant with the CTA-2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Technology Association (CTA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.
4V/6CH Preamp Outputs + Sub Control: The Pioneer AVH-4200NEX features three pair of 4.0-volt preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The unit's front and rear preamp output can be faded (front/rear), while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The Pioneer AVH-4200NEX lets you adjust the subwoofer preamp output's phase (normal/reverse) and volume (+6 to -24).
Crossovers: The AVH-4200NEX employs high pass and low pass crossovers to tailor the head unit to your connected speakers.
EEQ (Easy EQ) w/ 13-Band Graphic EQ: There are seven stored equalizer curves which you can easily recall at any time. You can choose from - Powerful, Natural, Vocal, Super Bass, Flat, Custom 1, or Custom 2. The Custom 1 and Custom 2 EQ modes allow you to manually adjust the level (+/- 12dB) of each band of the head unit's 13-band graphic equalizer (50, 80, 125, 200, 315, 500, 800, 1.25k, 2k, 3.15k, 5k, 8k, and 12.5k Hz).
Auto EQ (Optional): The auto-equalizer automatically measures your car's interior acoustic characteristics, and then creates an auto-equalizer curve base on that information. The Pioneer CD-MC20 Auto-EQ microphone (130CDMC20, sold separately) is required to use this function. The Pioneer CD-MC20 Auto-EQ microphone plugs into your compatible Pioneer A/V receiver's rear-panel AUX 3.5mm input. The Auto-EQ microphone should be placed in the center of your vehicle's driver seat headrest facing forward for EQ measurement.
Audio Settings: The head unit provides further sound adjustments for your car audio system.
MIXTRAX: MIXTRAX is an innovative Pioneer technology that creates a nonstop mix of your music library complete with a range of DJ-inspired effects. Drawing from Pioneer's rich DJ heritage and our passion for music, MIXTRAX delivers a unique DJ infused listening experience to those in the car. MIXTRAX takes the music from a USB-connected iPod/iPhone or USB MSC device and plays it back with added transitions and effects, creating a virtual DJ inside the Pioneer receiver.
Note: The MIXTRAX function does not work in AppRadio or AppRadioLive mode, with the Pandora App, for CarPlay or Android Auto, and with Bluetooth sources.
Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation; this can be turned On or Off.
Dual AV Inputs: The Pioneer AVH-4200NEX has dual AV inputs to connect two external audio/video sources. The head unit has a rear-panel 3.5mm minijack AV input for connecting a portable audio/video device. There is also a rear-panel composite video/stereo RCA AV input for connecting a video component such as a mobile TV tuner or game console.
HDMI Input: In addition to AppRadio & AppRadiLive modes for iPhone and Android, the head unit's HDMI input can be used to connect almost any external mobile AV source with an HDMI output; such as a TV tuner, Blu-ray player, or game system. The HDMI input will provide video and audio playback. Your vehicle's parking brake will need to be engaged to view video on the receiver's screen. Playback functions will need to be controlled from your HDMI-connected device (not the Pioneer head unit).
AV Output (w/ Dual Zone): The unit features a composite video jack and 3.5mm audio jack to output AV signals to an optional monitor and headphone system. You can simultaneously enjoy the same or different sources in the front and rear of your vehicle. The unit's dual zone AV output can be set to Mirror, DVD/CD, AV, USB-1/iPod, SD, or Off. The Mirror mode simply outputs the same audio/video signal (not including HDMI, CarPlay, or Android Auto) which is playing on the head unit's touchscreen monitor to your connected rear monitor/headphone system.
Note: USB/iPod 1 and SD cannot be selected for playback in the rear of the vehicle when CarPlay or Android Auto is active.
Rear-View Camera Input: The AVH-4200NEX is equipped with a composite video rear-view camera input for the addition of an optional backup camera (130NDBC8, sold separately). When the vehicle's transmission is put in reverse, the screen automatically switches to the rear view camera (violet/white wire of the harness must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching). Automatic video switching takes approximately 0.8 seconds. Additional rear-view camera features include:
Note: The rear view camera feature is meant as a back-up aid only; never solely rely on the rear-view camera when backing-up. In addition to using the rear-view camera, always look behind you to make sure everything is clear when backing up your vehicle.
iDatalink Serial Port: This Pioneer DVD receiver is compatible with the iDatalink Maestro RR (794ADSMRR, sold separately); a web programmable module that will permit the aftermarket Pioneer receiver to work with select Ford/Lincoln/Mercury vehicles that feature the factory SYNC system, select GM vehicles with factory OnStar, select Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicles with U-Connect, select Volkswagens with factory digital amplifier, select Toyota/Scion vehicles, and select Fiat vehicles.
Note: The iDatalink Maestro RR is web programmable, which means you'll need to flash the iDatalink Maestro RR interface module with the correct firmware from iDatalink's website. In addition to flashing the iDatalink Maestro RR module, you'll also need a vehicle specific harness (sold separately). The Pioneer receiver's OEM Setup menu must also be configured with your compatible vehicle's factory system before initial operation.
Navigation Ready: The Pioneer AVH-4200NEX allows you to connect the Pioneer AVIC-U280 add-on navigation unit (130AVIC280, sold separately) through its RGB Input. This versatile hideaway unit allows you to switch to navigation mode with the touch of a button. Get to your destination by inputting an address or search through the POI library while enjoying whatever source is currently playing.

I found myself considering buying a new Toyota Prius and realized that the main reason was to upgrade the radio/nav system in my 2011 model, which has only 60,000 miles on it. Then I remembered Crutchfield and the awesome service and support. There didn't used to be many after-market radios that would fit a Toyota, but I checked and found this system that looks even better than the newest factory systems from Toyota AND I don't have to spend $30,000! Such a deal! [ Molly May 03, 2017 ]
Cant beat Pioneer! Amazing stereo! It's just what I needed. Quality product at awesome price. [ Aaron May 03, 2017 ]

I wanted to upgrade my 2013 factory stereo to a system that had Apple Car Play. This one is highly recommended by your site and my local installer. With your instructions, I think I can install it myself and cut the total cost by 50%! [ Matthew Apr 01, 2017 ]
Price is very good, loaded with features, and reviews are good [ Anthony Mar 28, 2017 ]
This was the least expensive android auto compatible head unit I found, and it has fantastic reviews. [ P Mar 22, 2017 ]
Wanted a head unit that supported CarPlay for the iPhone. Checked all the ones that were under $600 and decided on this unit. Seems to have good reviews and has a lot of customizations, etc that I'm looking for. Always get my car stereos from Crutchfield due to their great online information, available support and good prices. I'm sure you can save a few dollars at other stores but I doubt you'll get the support that you will from here at most places. [ Thomas N Mar 22, 2017 ]

I bought this stereo because we put one in my hubby's truck and I realized I needed one in my Honda! What sold me? -Pioneer -Built in amp -Removable face plate -Android / Apple Play. It was time to upgrade my system and THIS was the system I had been waiting for! [ Mary Mar 16, 2017 ]
Awesome features [ michael Mar 16, 2017 ]
I purchased the AVH-4000NEX when it first came out and I'm a huge fan of the features and quality of the product. I decided to purchase the AVH-4200NEX for my 2012 Traverse. CarPlay is a super convenient feature. That's one of the main reasons I bought the 4000. I don't need the integrated GPS that the more expensive models use when I can use my phone to display its GPS on the 7" screen. It's a great way to modernize an older vehicle. [ Miles Mar 16, 2017 ]
I needed an upgrade to the factory system and did not need Nav. This system looks like the high quality I expect for a great value [ Lonnie Mar 14, 2017 ]

I chose this unit because I like the way Pioneer units sound and their user interface. Also, it accepts data input from the idatalink Maestro Rr that I purchased for this build. This way, not only does the user get high quality sound and expandability options, but they also get factory functions integrated into the head unit, making the user experience much more enjoyable. I've been going with Pioneer my whole driving life, in recent years I've been rocking the latest and greatest Flagship models. But it occurred to me I never use the car gps, I use my iPhone instead. So how about saving a little by removing the gps function?! [ Ryan Feb 16, 2017 ]

Pioneer has a great reputation for building quality products that last. Many positive reviews both on Crutchfield and other websites. Already own a 4100 which I love, swapping it out for the 4200 and moving the 4100 to my truck. I really love ApplePlay and the inputs /choices that can be used with this rig, including the reverse camera. The Pioneer works seamlessly with my iPhone. [ S Jan 19, 2017 ]
wanted the Kenwood DDX6703S or higher model, but reviews said the Kenwood units have glare and can't see the display during daytime. Didn't see any complaints about the Pioneer display. This unit has a high rating [ G Jan 18, 2017 ]

I use my phone for navigation so I don't need the higher Pioneer head units. This unit offers all the sound quality tweaks I'm looking for. It also works with an external mic to measure and correct problems unique to my vehicle. Lastly, I wanted to be able to display my own graphic on the turn on splash screen. [ KENDALL H Nov 02, 2016 ]

came down between the kenwood ddx9903 and the pioneer 4200nex. in the end the reviews and issues reported with the kenwood even after the aug 25, 2016 firmware update tipped the scales on the pioneer. [ Chris Sep 07, 2016 ]
To upgrade my factory radio . [ Fernando Sep 03, 2016 ]
I previously tried a Kenwood DDX 793 and had continuous Bluetooth problems with my Nexus 6p. I have generally been a Kenwood customer but after 2 attempts at the same head unit, decided to try a different brand rather than go up to the 9903S [ SEAN Sep 03, 2016 ]
I had a choice between this and the Kenwood DDX9703S as the Android Auto entry-level head units. I chose to go with the Pioneer because it has two USB ports and I wanted to simultaneously connect my Samsung S7 and my iPod. [ Bryan Aug 30, 2016 ]
Looking for a highly rated unit and one that has a bright enough screen in most light conditions. Not willing to install a lesser unit and save $200 and be frustrated forevermore.... :) [ Russ Aug 29, 2016 ]
Found it had all the needed parts to make my Chevy Trailblazer the most comfortable for my family. I like the fact that I can tie in both my Android phone and the Kids I-pads/IPhone using several ways. It is a bomb unit [ WAYMON Jul 30, 2016 ]
Got tired of waiting for the JBL Legend CP100 to come out. They keep pushing the release date back, back, and back. The Pioneer AVH-4200NEX cost a fraction more and the $100 rebate pioneer is offering until 7/31/2016 was all I needed to take the plunge. I also like that it comes with pre-amp outs for easy install of a Rockford Fosgate Punch P300-12 (unlike the JBL Legend CP100 which does not have pre-amp outs and would require purchase of an LC2i to make work). [ CHARLES Jul 23, 2016 ]
I based my purchase based off reviews an features. [ Scott Jul 21, 2016 ]
After discussing what my needs were, Buddy was very helpful. The money I would have spent on the Nav stuff for me was a waste. Android Auto was the biggest seller for me and kept the cost down. Buddy's Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=160 [ WILLIAM B Jul 06, 2016 ]

Like all the features plus improvements over the AVH4100. Pioneer rebate doesn't hurt either! [ Paul Jun 01, 2016 ]
Had a lot of features that I was interested in but he deal breaker was all the great reviews compared to the Kenwood models that I was looking at. I'm a Kenwood guy so for me to switch, had to be worthwhile. Plus the $100 rebate helps. [ D Jun 01, 2016 ]
Best option for Car Play and detachable face. No need for phone bracket/mount on vent or windshield with Car Play or Android Play. Current $100 rebate makes unit very good option. [ Brad May 31, 2016 ]
Good value after rebate. [ S May 23, 2016 ]
I chose this unit for 07 Nissan X-terra because of the features, good looks and hey...you can't go wrong with Pioneer! I chose to purchase from Crutchfield because they are extremely knowledgeable right down to the installation gear needed, and they knew it would fit. [ Terryl May 21, 2016 ]

Yes you need to hook up the crossover. If you don't have a need for the tweeters to be separate then I would recommend the DB652. [ Michael May 20, 2017 ]
I do not believe so. [ Sean May 09, 2017 ]
I have had great luck with mine. Use both Android (S7) and iOS (6) phones with no issues. Sorry I can't be of any help. [ THOMAS S Apr 21, 2017 ]
No. It will show the camera image almost immediately. There is a delay in the yellow lines that overlay if you have those programmed to display. [ Christopher Apr 21, 2017 ]
I ran mine over to the drivers side above the door in the trim. You barely notice it sticking out the edge of it. Everyone I've talked to on it says it's easy to hear me. And when I use the google assistant through Android auto, it never says "I didn't get that" and understands my requests. Love this unit, just recently upgraded the speakers and sounds great [ J Apr 17, 2017 ]
I t works fine. Never had a complaint from callers not being able to hear me [ Angel Luis Apr 16, 2017 ]

I haven't heard any negative comments from people that I have called using the mic. Siri doesn't always hear me right but I don't attribute that to the mic quality. [ Brian Apr 15, 2017 ]
Never been told there was a problem. does depend on location. mines on my visor. [ Ryan Apr 15, 2017 ]
I have this installed in a Toyota Tundra and not all the functions work at the steering wheel. This is not a deal breaker for me, but it may be for others..just saying.. [ Guest Apr 10, 2017 ]
It will show the google maps when in car apple play [ linda Apr 04, 2017 ]
The AVH-4200NEX does not have built-in navigation. But, it can show maps through Apple Carplay, Android Auto, and Pioneer Appradio. Since you have an IPhone, you would likely want to display maps and hear voice directions using Apple Carplay running on your phone but using the unit's screen and the car's speakers. While in Carplay mode, your phone's screen and speaker are off, instead using the NEX unit's screen and the car's speakers. The unit allows you to play music or radio programming while viewing a dynamic route map on the screen. Audio entertainment volume is automatically muted when turn-by-turn directions are announced so you can hear the directions clearly. This is a very cool feature. Hope that helps! [ MyDogHadFleas Apr 04, 2017 ]
It will only show a map when used with the iPhone in CarPlay mode. The receiver itself does not contain any map data. [ Sean Apr 04, 2017 ]
The 4200 does not have its own built in navigation, however, with your iPhone you can plug it in via the usb port and operate the apple CarPlay app feature where it uses your phone for GPS and you will have the map with directions etc on the screen of the 4200. This is a very nice feature. It works similarly with android phones using the android auto app. [ Ronald Apr 04, 2017 ]
Display will show map. I have to push the button on my iPhone to activate Siri, but I can then tell Siri to give directions to a destination and it works fine. I have had this unit for about one year in my 2006 Porsche 911. I really like it. I wanted the updated maps from Apple plus a rear view camera, and of course the ability to use Siri. I have read recently however, that there are units on the market now that will do all Apple Car play functions using only Bluetooth. To use apps such as map, I have to plug in via USB. On daily trips I just use Bluetooth for audio and phone. [ JAMES Apr 03, 2017 ]
if you use an iPhone or android device connected to it per the instructions then yes it will show navigation from your phone. This works by either using CarPlay or Android Auto and connecting your phone via a USB connection. The 4200NEX does not have GPS or built-in maps of any kind. This is actually a good thing. Using your phone to do navigation ensures that you have the most up to date maps and best user interface experience. Just make sure your connected properly. [ JOE Apr 03, 2017 ]
This unit is Apple CarPlay enabled, so as long as you have your iPhone connected via cable and use Apple Maps, you are good-to-go! I use this feature daily and it works great. [ DANIEL C Apr 03, 2017 ]
For additional details on fit or installation please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to pull up all the items and see how everything integrates and also determine what else you may need for an installation in your vehicle. [ Kenny Apr 07, 2017 ] Staff
I don't know. I do know i'm very happy with the NEX. Just added a backup camera to it. This would really be nice on and RV. Cheers, D [ DAVID Apr 04, 2017 ]
Thanks for your question. The manufacturers warranty is 1 year parts and labor. Hope this helps. [ Kenny Apr 01, 2017 ] Staff
You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you. [ Kenny Mar 13, 2017 ] Staff
When I installed, I just ran the cords under the cover around the shifter then into the center console, I ran the USB Extension it came with. Then I just plug my Android USB cord into it. Works great. You could get an additional one for hers. [ J Mar 14, 2017 ]

you could buy a usb mount that has the cables that would connect to the back ports and mount the usb connection somewhere in your vehicle. i have one for 2 usb ports and one for hdmi and aux. they can be flush mounted or mounted under dash or in glove box. [ Ryan Mar 10, 2017 ]
Yes, you should run 2, one for Iphone and one for Android, thats what i did on mine and works perfect [ Danny Mar 10, 2017 ]
Run two dedicated cables. One USB port supports iOS devices and one android devices. [ Michael Mar 10, 2017 ]

No. It has a warning screen that times out after several seconds. I never have to touch the "OK" button. [ Craig Mar 09, 2017 ]

The screen is resistive. I actually like resistive screen better. When driving, you don't always have the ability to precisely touch the part of the screen without your finger moving and accidentally touching a different part of the screen. With the resistive screen, it allows you to kinda pre-position your finger before making the selection. I had had this radio for almost a year and have not found the resistive screen to be a feature, not a defect. I hope this helps. [ Robert C. Feb 04, 2017 ]
It's resistive but very responsive to touch. Also screen is very clear and bright. [ Michael Feb 03, 2017 ]
Resistive, but it is very good, very sensitive; you hardly need need to apply any pressure at all. You wont be disappointed in the screen with regard to tactile response. [ Stephen Feb 03, 2017 ]
You can not use Waze through CarPlay. Waze was bought by google. To get Waze you will need to use the hdmi cable along with the Apple lighting adapter. P/N -- MD826AM/A From there use the second USB to charge the phone while driving. If you use the Apple USB the phone will just buzz and give you an an error code on the screen [ CHRIS Jan 19, 2017 ]
I do not think that will ever work. Google owns Waze so it may work in the future on android auto. I think it will work via a screen mirror via the hdmi hookup [ Christopher Jan 19, 2017 ]
Waze isn't supported yet with android, not sure about CarPlay. If you have an android device, there's a 3rd party app that will let you mirror your screen. Check out appradio unchained reloaded. Good luck. [ Andrew Jan 19, 2017 ]
You can have Waze play through the stereo, but not display on Carplay. This is about the best you can do. If you google for carplay and waze, you can find how to have the audio/directions play through the head unit. [ Gregory Jan 18, 2017 ]
i purchased and installed this radio last summer, along with a 2-port USB connector that I mounted under my dash - I ran those cables from the external USB connector into the radio, and then use Anker lightning cable to connect my iPhone into the external USB Connector. I've been using CarPlay for months without any problems! [ DANIEL C Jan 19, 2017 ]
I believe I used an aftermarket USB cable for my install with no problems. [ Sean Jan 18, 2017 ]
I have used several cables with no problem. That said, Apple products can be picky about USB cables. I would just try to stick with Apple certified. I currently use the included cable into a very short USB to Lightning. [ Patrick Jan 18, 2017 ]

Usb 1 is for Apple USB 2 is for Android [ Robert C. Feb 04, 2017 ]
I've used phones connected to both USB-1 and USB-2, but as noted in the manual, CarPlay must be connected via USB-1. [ DANIEL C Dec 05, 2016 ]
What I read before my install was that iPhones (Carplay) must use USB1, iPods (no Carplay) may use either port. USB extensions are always iffy, but I had no trouble with a Belkin 1m USB/Lightning cable in USB1. [ Jon Sep 26, 2016 ]
The screen cannot tilt negative (towards the floor of the car) with respect to the head unit, it can only tilt positive at about 5 degree increments up to about 30 degrees (toward the roof of the car). The screen is by default perpendicular to the head unit and can only tilt upwards from there. If the head unit is installed in the car at angle inclined (i.e. not horizontal) then the face will also be angled. I do not believe the glare issue you have will be resolved as there is no way to have the screen tilt downward. [ Ronald Sep 17, 2016 ]
I don't know the exact angle, but it seems it tilts enough to meet your needs. [ Michael Sep 16, 2016 ]
I had one. The motor moves the face in about ten degree increments. Three steps. [ linda Sep 16, 2016 ]
The manual for this model on page 9 is silent about maximum/minimum range of tilt angles. However, there does not seem to be a way to tilt the screen forward which is what you are asking. I suggest running this by Crutchfield tech support for a definitive answer. Start by asking if the screen can tilt forward. Once that's answered you can follow-up with maximum tilt angle. Good luck [ MyDogHadFleas Sep 16, 2016 ]
Unfortunately this Pioneer radio has the same glare issues you are looking to avoid. [ JEREMY Sep 16, 2016 ]
I believe you have to order the correct aftermarket mounting kit for your car. The unit itself will not tilt forward 30 degrees as far as I can tell. [ Sean Sep 16, 2016 ]
Yes. You can disable the auto feature and manually set either 'day' or 'night'. You can also program 'day' or 'night' based on time of day. [ JEFF Aug 30, 2016 ]
Possibly. You need to find out if the Sirius tuner is in your stock radio or a separate tuner. If it is a separate tuner then you can possibly use the idatalink maestro interface. If it is in your stock radio than it is gone when you remove the radio & you will need a new Sirius tuner. The good news is that they are not expensive at all & Sirius will work with you to transfer if you have a subscription. You will also need an antenna adapter that is also not super expensive. Same goes with your backup camera. There are a couple of interfaces that might work for you. idatalink or Metra. The nice thing about the idatalink interface is that the AVH-4200NEX is already prewired for it & it will also allow you to keep your steering wheel controls. [ RICHARD Aug 27, 2016 ]
My Silverado also has the front firing tweeters, I installed this as is and I have no complaints [ Christopher Aug 27, 2016 ]
The auto EQ only works with RF, LF, RR, LR & sub. It will Time Align with those 5 channels but will not recognize eq or time shift components on the same channel. You would need to step up to a better processor like the Alpine to do that. I can't imagine that your tweeters are out of alignment with the woofers though. You would notice that the music sounds funny and instruments and voices are not in sync. They would have to be really far apart to notice & Honda would have a real problem on their hands. [ RICHARD Aug 27, 2016 ]
Either 1) it was not wired correctly, or 2) there are 2 setting for dimming, a day and a night, perhaps the night dimming is set to the same brightness as the day. When you go to the dimming setting, if you turn on your headlights it should then offer a night dimming level. [ Ronald Sep 17, 2016 ]

My Galaxy S6 with Marshmallow works with BT for Pandora and other Android features such as Ok, Google. Not sure about the USB-C issue. [ Timothy A. Aug 23, 2016 ]
You need to hook up using a USB cable. Bluetooth or WiFi is not an option. I use a Nexus 6P with USB-C, and it works flawlessly. I can't speak to the HTC 10 as far as heat. I did have trouble using Android Auto with an LG G4, but that issue seems to be phone based. [ Paul Aug 23, 2016 ]
Android Auto will not work via Bluetooth. You have to use a USB connection. I'm not sure about USB-C. I'd recommend calling Crutchfield tech support about that. [ Jeff Aug 23, 2016 ]
The Pioneer AVH-4100NEX does not offer any iPod-specific video capability with an iPod Classic. I am not sure but the 30-pin to composite AV cable will give audio and video out that can go into the head unit. Be aware that there is an input that must be connected to the parking brake which makes it so that you can only watch video while in park. [ David Aug 23, 2016 ]

You can't. Since Google bought Waze and there are now andoid radios, the only way to use Wade on this radio is to use the HDMI cable And mirror your phone on the radio. Charging stopped because the temperature of the smartphone rose due to prolonged use of the smartphone during charging. -Disconnect the smartphone from the cable, and wait until the smartphone cools down. My samsung galaxy S3 and S7 work just fine with android auto. [ Ronald Sep 17, 2016 ]
The short answer to this is yes. But when I tried to connect my sons S6 Active it said the USB cable was wrong. I remember reading something in the manual, make sure to reference the manual and get the proper cable, it isn't a standard cable. [ Steve Aug 03, 2016 ]
I use an iPhone, but the Pioneer is loaded with google play which is the same thing as CarPlay for Apple. As long as your phone is an Android OS it should work just fine. My son has an Android Samsung phone, I will have him connect tonight and verify and then post the results. Hope this helps somewhat [ Steve Aug 02, 2016 ]
I use neither one but it pairs very quickly with my android phone so if your phone has the app it should work just fine I bought it mostly for the card slot to copy large amounts of cd music onto and hd radio [ brent Aug 01, 2016 ]

no [ Christopher Jul 27, 2016 ]
Unfortunately, no! Though the introduction of a Tivo-like service for radio would be awesome. One other minor annoyance is that you have to dig into a sub-menu to turn the radio off. Otherwise it just stays on all the time. Not a big deal as I just mute it from the steering wheel (the Maestro lets me mute in my Tacoma by holding the volume down button for a couple seconds... a very nice feature). [ Jason Jul 25, 2016 ]

I have to assume what you are trying to do is to be able to watch video while the car is moving. A sufficiently smart auto mechanic/electrician could probably figure out how to do it. But watching a video while driving is very dangerous. I drive a racecar and I would never consider watching a video while driving my personal car on the street. [ JAMES Jun 28, 2016 ]
Very subjective question. I have a convertible and my old lady had no issues watching The 6 Million Dollar Man on DVD during 2pm day time. [ David Jun 16, 2016 ]
Most likely terrible. Today in my Prius (no sun roof) I couldn't see the screen at all because it was so sunny out. With that being said, you probably don't need to see it and just about any display will probably wash out. You can use handheld remote and just remember the buttons on it. [ Harold Jun 16, 2016 ]
The screen is good in sun light. I don't have my windows tented and I only have issues if the sun is directly on the screen .I only have a problem when back up camera is on with direct sunlight. Depending how the unit sets in the dash plays a big part in the view of any screen. [ Richard Jun 16, 2016 ]
I have not had a problem with the sun although have not had the entire top off with it yet [ Jason Jun 15, 2016 ]
The display can sometimes appear a bit washed out when there is a lot of sunlight. However most of the time the display in fantastic and really amazing at night. The display also picks up finger prints easily. However the features and sound is so good that I totally ignore the occasional display washout or finger prints. Like the radio a lot I have a Homda Accord but I suspect the display behaves similar in a Wrangler. [ Michael Jun 15, 2016 ]
You can see the display in the sun, but with anything...it isnt as crisp as it would be with no sun. It is no worse than your iphone with full brightness...maybe a little better, but that is the best comparison I can offer. [ Gregory Jun 15, 2016 ]

For CarPlay you have to use the top USB port. Waze does not work with this connection. However it does have an HDMI connection on the back and I believe based on some YouTube videos you can use that connection with an HDMI Lightening adapter and Waze will work. I know through HDMI you can mirror your iPhone. I need to pull my head unit out this weekend to hook up my sub I bought and I will try that connection with Waze and see what happens. No matter what I think you will have to use separate cables to perform these functions for now. Eventually I am sure Apple will allow Waze and you won't have to switch cables. [ Bryan Jun 04, 2016 ]
You have to choose how your phone connection to the receiver (in the input /output setting menu > smartphone set up ) to be able to use Apple Car Play or App radio . To use Apple Car Play , connect your iPhone to the usb hub ( the top one ) of the receiver , go to setting > input/ output > smartphone set up, choirs iPhone then choose usb , turn on Apple Car Play . To use Appradio you need an HDMI cable , an Apple AV didital adapter ( available at Apple Store for $50 ) , set up connection method : AV digital adapter / Bluetooth . With Appradio app you can use some of compatible 3rd apps like Appradio Live ,Navmii, EC touch , Pandora , Spotify , ect. Waze is not compatible with IOS 9 , it doesn't even launch on my IPhone 6s , they need to update the app .Or you can select HDMI input of the receiver to mirror everything on your phone to the screen even Netflix and You Tube video but you do the control on the phone not on the screen . Either method of use , your phone has to be connected time to time . The AVH- 4200NEX is a beautiful receiver , it has a lot of features you can have fun with , Apple Car Play works very well everything is on screen . App radio work well too but you have to launch the app on the phone . I got it from Crutchfield , they ship to me fast tax free and free shipping , Recommend [ Duc Minh Jun 03, 2016 ]
I recently purchased this head unit. I have not installed it as of yet, but have been doing some research on using it and what is necessary to utilize it's features. Hope this helps. [ Terryl Jun 03, 2016 ]
Using the "audio mix" function while in AppRadio Mode will allow you to listen to other music sources simultaneously while your Waze navigation is displayed on screen. In order to avoid having it switch between digital broadcast and analog broadcast automatically, you can turn the "Reception Blending" feature OFF in the Radio Settings menu (found under the "System" setting screen). The head unit can pair with up to 3 different bluetooth enabled devices at the same time. The head unit will auto connect to a previously paired device, if that device is in range and bluetooth is on. Once and a while, it will fail to connect, so you may have to manually initiate connection from the head unit. Call quality is outstanding! Hands down the best bluetooth calling I have ever had and I tried tons. [ Robert C. May 15, 2016 ]
With support for android auto and apple car play you'll probably find yourself not even using Bluetooth, I have the same unit and turned Bluetooth off for the simple fact I would never use it. However to answer your question, it will save multiple bt profiles and auto connect to paired devices. [ Michael May 15, 2016 ]
I'm not sure if you're able to connect multiple devices at the same time, but I do know that 4200NEX does have a memory of up to 3 devices. I'd test it, but I only have one device to pair with it. There is an option to auto-connect to a bluetooth device. I believe the default setting is to "on." The auto-connect connects to the last device it was paired with. [ Greg May 12, 2016 ]

According to the user manual, the AVH-4200NEX is compatible with version 2 of the SD specification. Per Wikipedia, SD version 2.0 supports capacities up to 32 GB. The AVH-4200NEX manual lists support for up to 1,500 folders and 15,000 files on compatible SD cards. So, using multiple sources, the answer to the original question seems to be 32 GB.
