Bluetooth® for your car

No way would I ever buy a receiver without Bluetooth® — hands-free calling, easy wireless access to the media on my smartphone — what's not to love? And since I'm an IOS guy, I love how the AVH-501EX supports Siri Eyes Free when I'm in the car. Touch a button and I can listen to and send text messages, place calls, and ask questions, all without taking my eyes off the road.

Your A/V on tap

HD Radio

This receiver covers the bases with CD and DVD playback, an aux input, plus Android™ and iPhone® control via USB. Your inner audiophile will love the FLAC file support for true high-resolution music — up to 192kHz/24 bit. And if you like tuning in the radio on those long drives, you'll appreciate the HD Radio™ tuner. You can get a video fix by watching DVDs when the parking brake is engaged or send the video output to optional rear-seat screens to entertain your passengers on those long road trips. Add a rear-view camera and you'll get a better view in crowded parking lots or backing out of your garage.

Stellar sound quality you'll love

The AVH-501EX rocks out with a powerful amplifier, supported by a versatile 13-band equalizer that tames the rough spots in your car's acoustics. If you're looking for a little more punch, connect an amp or powered sub to the three sets of 4-volt preamp outputs and kick things up a notch.

Keep your factory extras — and add some upgrades

The AVH-501EX offers compatibility you won't find in many other aftermarket radios, thanks to the iDatalink Maestro module (not included). In a wide selection of vehicles, this module lets you keep factory features that you'd otherwise lose when you install a new radio. You'll also be able to check out expanded functionality on the Pioneer's screen, including gauges, climate controls, a distance sensor, and tire pressure and temperature monitors. With select rear-view cameras, you'll even get parking guide lines that curve with the motion of your steering wheel. Once you've identified your vehicle, you'll see the iDatalink module offered on the way to your Shopping Cart if it's compatible.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Smartphone note: If you're going to use your smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

Great head unit! I have the older one that this replaced in another vehicle as well and love it also. if you set the dimmer to timed instead of Auto it helps with the difficulty to see that some have complained about. I love the HD radio! so many more options to listen to. Installation was a breeze with the kit that came with it!

Pros: Large touch screen, really woke up my factory speakers!

Cons: volume buttons and not a knob.

    Great Sound, Great Customer Support

Rooster from Carolina Shores, NC on 7/22/2019

    2004 Ford Explorer

    Verified customer (What's this?)
    Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

It's always a pleasure returning to Crutchfield for a car stereo. Our 2004 Ford Eddie Bauer Explorer unit lost front speakers from the fader control. After a discussion with my advisor Cosmo, I decided on the Pioneer AVH-501EX. Installation went very well with the help of Crutchfield supplied materials. I would recommend using POSI connectors for the wiring harness. On initial setup, we discovered a small problem, The Bluetooth hands-free calling was not functioning properly. The first call to support we upgraded the firmware. When that didn't solve the issue, Nicole then jumped in and worked with me through a few trial and error events until she found the answer. It has been working well. Love Black Magic JuJu. I particularly like the ability to arrange most things we use to the home screen or the favorites menu. The sound from the unit is great and really like the separate subwoofer controls. Our phones automatically connect to the unit when entering the car. The radio has a strong reception in our medium-sized market. Several stations broadcast with HD and there is a notable difference. Since the USB and AUX inputs are rear-mounted connections, I installed a flush mount adapter on the lower dash to eliminate loose cables in the passenger area. We are very satisfied with our Pioneer AVH-501EX and Crutchfield.

Pros: Really Nice Sound, Great Audio Control, Ease of use, Separate Subwoofer Control, Adjustable Screen Content.

    Cons: Have not found anthing...yet.

Horrible idea to buy this radio

There is so much wrong with this radio I don't even know where to start. I updated the firmware and the sound is awful coming through my rockford fosgate tweeters. It sounds garbled on a phone call and there is no settings to change the microphone with noise reduction or microphone level. There is no crossover or eq at all for my system. It's either subwoofer off or on and what phase and frequency are my subwoofers. The fan on the back of the radio sounds like a jet engine going off when it gets hot. Save your money for an alpine or even go with a Kenwood that has the most basic features any radio should have. Thank goodness that Crutchfield is understanding and honors thier warranty system.

I want to be fair, but there's a lot lacking with this unit. On the plus side, the amplifier section is quite good; it can easily handle your front and rear 6x9's without an auxiliary amp unless you really like your music mind-bendingly loud. The display is sharp and for the most part the menus are reasonably intuitive. Now for the negative: the radio tuner in this unit is really quite bad. As another reviewer stated, my GM factory radio blew this Pioneer away in terms of station receptivity. The HD radio does sound noticeably better than normal analog, but unless you live near a large metropolitan area it is probably not worth the additional $$$. Now for the thing I detest about this unit: you can't EQ or otherwise reasonably adjust the audio controls (other than basic volume) when the vehicle is in motion. This means that you are stuck with the settings unless you stop and apply the brake. If you are on a long road trip you cannot adjust levels, which is unacceptable. This "feature" is likely (in Pioneer's mind) am attempt to prevent distracted driving, although one can argue that swapping out CD's or flash media are arguably just as risky a behavior. If you like to adjust your sound on the fly DO NOT buy this unit; you will be disappointed and you need to look elsewhere. If you don't mind this rather large inconvenience then perhaps you'll be satisfied, but beware the tuner shortcomings if radio is important to you; it will likely disappoint.

    Pros: Amplifier section very strong

Cons: Plenty - see review text

Love most features on this unit. Don't like the blue tooth auto connect feature. I'll have the unit on the radio input, and when my truck is started, it connects to my smartphone and shows the last internet sight I was on. Could be me not having it set right, but this is irratating. Just want the phone to connect in case I get a call while driving.

Pros: Unit is feature packed. Seems to be very well built .

    Cons: Auto connect for bluetooth.

Great sound. Straight forward connection documentation from Crutchfield. I get some interference when making BT phone calls. I haven't figured out if it is road noise being picked up by the mic or the set itself. I also have two cables from my 350Z Bose system that aren't connected to the 501. One of them has to be to the steering column controls.

Pros: Great sound. Looking at speakers now

Cons: Some BT issues. Maybe I'm old fashioned but I miss a dial volume control.

I settled on this unit for a couple of reasons. One was the ability to add a rear camera and the other was to have Bluetooth capability. I did the install myself even though I am not a Electronics guru. The key is to take your time when connecting the adapter to the after market harness. If you are comfortable using tools it's not difficult. I was disappointed that the first unit showed up with a dead channel. After process of elimination and a quick call to Crutchfield technical support we knew it as the stereo unit that had an issue. Tech support was great and very patient. I had a replacement unit in three days and all is good. There are a ton of options with connectivity and of course background and color setting with the display. The sound is good enough for me with no amps. This replaced an old worn out GM unit. I recommend getting installation gear from Crutchfiield or at least following their advice on necessary extras. Used everything recommended and all worked as suggested. There is one thing I am not fond of with this unit related to the Bluetooth audio. Once my iPhone is connected the unit will constantly switch to pandora with every text or notification I get. I want he phone to connect automatically but I want to control what I listen to. I hope Pioneer has a fix for this. It is really frustrating if you are listening to something you are interested in. I would have given this one five stars if not for that. The phone function works really well otherwise

Pros: Options for display and connectivity. Great resolution with video. Automatic reverse camera display. Mute function Crutchfield tech support

Cons: Bluetooth audio switches constantly Gas mileage doesn't improve.

I used to shop for audio at other retailers. No more! I bought the 601 for myself and the 501 for my wife and she loves it as much as i do mine. So many features in these pioneer models and Crutchfield takes all the guess work out of wiring capability for your vehicle. Well worth the small fee to click and go. Customer service is second to none. After buying from Crutchfield a half dozen times,i wont shop anywhere else. Keep up the good work guys. Truly appreciate it!

Pros: Built in crossover Display options Bluetooth hook up is easy Just kicks ass all around Sooo many cool features that aren't even in the description.

Cons: Hurt my eardrums on vol level 22. Goes to 40! This thing gets seriously loud. Arguing with my wife about who is going to come inside and make dinner because we both sit in our cars trying new features in these radios. Having to pay for take out alot!

Works on my 2013 Jeep Wrangler. The radio looks good and does what it says. I wish it had more customization for the speakers so you could control the front tweeters separately from the front 6.5" speakers. Also, the touch screen sometimes has to be touched twice to get it to work.

For what it is, I like it. The touchscreen works well. The sound is good. Fit nicely in my 2500 Silverado. A couple of things that are/were quirky about the receiver: When linked to my Samsung Galaxy S7, yes, it recognizes my contact list. However, randomly, contacts are misplaced. For example: In my contact list on my phone, my mom is under Mom Cell. But the receiver picked it up as Cell Mom. Yet, it left my mom's home contact (Mom Home) intact. And again, this is random...not with all contacts. Secondly, I already had a backup camera installed (aftermarket) on my truck (for a mirror display...again, aftermarket). While the camera worked fine on the installer's equipment, apparently, the receiver wasn't 'strong enough' to sustain an image on the receiver. I had to purchase a different back up camera that would work. My only other complaint is, I suppose, my own fault. This radio (though Bluetooth) does not have Android Auto. So, you don't get a full link with your phone. I wanted to be able to use the GPS on my phone (to display on the receiver), but the receiver doesn't recognize it (I would need a receiver that had Android Auto). Apparently, there are other APPs (like APPradio) that have GPS, etc...but you have to use THAT GPS, not the one you want. $100 more for the next 'better' Pioneer receiver (that has Android Auto), and I would have had less issues. Not 100% sure, but I think this receiver is more suited for iPhone users.

Works fine in our 2011 VW Jetta. Purchased along with Crutchfield install kit which included a dash mounting kit, iDatalink Maestro ADS-MRR Interface Module, iDatalink HRN-RR-VW1 Harness, and a European Antenna Adapter. Only wire splicing required was between the Pioneer pigtail and the iDatalink harness -- colors matched and the schematic was very clear so that step was pretty quick and easy. I went the extra step in splicing the CANBUS wires in behind the OBDII port instead of plugging in the connector already installed on the end of the iDatalink harness wires. With the interface module, the only connections required on the back of the AVH-501 was the data cable and audio in cable from the interface module, the pwr/speaker plug, USB extension cable (included with stereo) antenna cable from the European adapter, and the backup camera's video cable. The interface module retained: the steering wheel controls, hands-free calling through the car's mic and bluetooth (bluetooth in the AVH-501 only used for AV if you want), and the car's AUX while adding a number of the car's instrument panel readings to the AVH-501. Curiously, the vehicle's clock is not copied over to the radio, however. Have to set time separately on the AVH-501. There is PLENTY of room behind the stereo for the interface module, antenna adapter, and associated connectors. Quick and easy install. Only "modification" was splicing stereo's wires into interface module's harness. Looks and sounds great!

Pros: Looks and sounds great! Easy install with Crutchfield's install kit. Retains factory hands-free calling mic and controls. Volume on each function stays where it last was (volume same on radio when returning to it after a call ends even though may have been changed while on the call, and a new call picks up at the previous call's volume setting, for example)

Cons: haven't figured out how to make "repeat" function work on songs/folders yet when playing off USB media.

I received and installed the radio. The first thing was that when I was shopping for one I said I wanted the dual camera for a back up camera plus the second camera as a hitch camera. Was told this one was the one I wanted to do the job. Well it's not. I can't switch to the hitch cam while in reverse. I called and asked about what I could do and was told in short, nothing. Back up camera has to be there. The whole point of buying the radio, and it won't do it. Then the radio just kept messing up. Hitch cam would come on, on it's own. Blue tooth stopped working. Back up camera stopped working and so on. Tried reseting the unit a couple of times. Techs were really helpful, except for one. They ended up sending me a new radio which I haven't been able to get installed yet. Maybe better luck with the next one.

    Pros:

Cons: can't be used as a back up cam and a hitch cam.

I purchased the Pioneer AVH-501EX to replace the Shaker 1000 in my 2005 Mustang. I received the order promptly. Installation was relatively easy having ordered the harness made up to fit my car without having to do the wiring connections. The unit sounds much better than the Shaker and has more adjust-ability. I also purchased a backup camera which proved a bit more difficult to get working. Daytime image is good but not so much at night. I give the radio 4 stars because of the difficulty in getting Pandora to work. I was able to play Pandora through the Bluetooth audio but until this morning was not able to get Pandora to connect to my Android from the head unit. As of today a I very satisfied with my purchased with all of the features that I was looking working.

    Cons: control buttons small

Great unit with a lot of features. Bluetooth works seamlessly with one exception. When you are connected via Bluetooth and any notifications come in reporting a text message, email or driving directions (google Maps) it drops the HD Radio and does not return to HD Radio. It is very annoying to have to manually reset to HD Radio. but the real story here is the support and service you get from Crutchfield. I did a lot of research prior to buying this unit and every time it came back to Crutchfield. The selling point for me was the customer service and the Ready Cable service. I have never installed a head unit before and was dreading the wiring. The Ready cable was a big selling point for me. Having never done an install before I had the unit in and dash back together in 22 minutes. I had an issue with the microphone and called support. I was connected to Jake who helped me get the mic working in a few minutes. I also had the chance to buy this unit at a good discount which would of saved me money, however it was well worth the retail price with everything Crutchfield offers. Excellent customer service, Excellent support and knowledgeable friendly support staff. A truly caring company.

Pros: -Clear screen -Lots of controls and settings. -The Customer Support is amazing. -Works as described. -Trim kit was perfect. -Great sound. -Many display options.

Cons: -No Google Maps. -HD Radio needs to be reset if any notifications come in via Bluetooth. -No voice commands for Android. -AppRadio in my opinion is trash.

Great sound and lots of expansion options. I have 2 phones, one personal and one for work, and one of my requirements was working with multiple bluetooth devices which this unit does well. Screen brightness is better than expected but can be difficult to read Waze and other apps if you have sunglasses on. Only real complaint is it would be nice if the unit could do a regular screen mirroring of Apple or Android OS without needing to go through either specific apps or the appradio app. I knew this was a limitation going in, though.

Clunky and buggy. I use Spotify more than anything and it doesn't do well with that. It shouldn't be such a pain to play Spotify whether or not phone is plugged into USB. Often it will be "playing" (can see time stamp changing) with no sound. Sometimes it will play via the phone's speakers, though it can still be controlled with pioneer unit, e.g. change tracks. Sometimes the song will change but on-screen display won't without switching back and forth between sources. As for AV sources, it is never clear which one I should be using: bluetooth, iPod, Spotify? Often have to switch sources multiple times or just have to turn sources off and back on. The manual is not much help and seems few other resources exist for this unit compared to other pioneer models. When it does "work", there is generally a noticeable lag in updates to on-screen information, e.g. updating track info. Possibly unrelated to the unit itself, steering wheel controls don't work. May have been missing a piece of this kit. Or it's the unit? Or it's me on this one.

I replaced the factory radio in my Altima with this unit, along with the front speakers. All the installation parts provided worked flawlessly. My first time doing this type of thing and myself and 15 yr old son knocked all of it out in about 1.5 hours. I ordered the wiring service as well, which virtually made the install plug and play. My steering wheel controls work perfectly and the sound is way better now with this head unit and 6 3/4" Kicker door speakers. I enhanced the installation instructions provided by Crutchfield by watching you tube videos on door panel and radio removal. All in all I am very impressed with the ease of ordering and installation. It was so easy I did't even have to contact customer support. After 3 weeks, everything is working great. Am going to upgrade the rear 6 x 9's in the near future.

I bought the Pioneer as a replacement for an Apple Car play enable radio because I hated the way that CarPlay took over my driving experience and limited me to only certain apps. Also, I needed an auxiliary input to support my Serious Xm receiver (this is a portable style with a lifetime subscription so giving it up is not an option). The sound from the stereo is excellent and the radio pulls in stations very well. The controls are well thought out and over-all easy to use. The pain in the neck parking brake cut out is very annoying as well as the idea that it doesn't know the difference between audio input on the auxiliary and video. The back up camera has fixed parking guide lines that work well for my camera after I changed the mounting angle. Overall, I am very pleased with the stereo. The idea of running apps on the radio doesn't work out as well as one might think it would as it messes up the standard blue-tooth phone functions (not nearly as intrusive as Carplay though).

Pros: Easy menus great sound lots of inputs

Cons: Apps are intrusive to the user experience

Currently the stereo is driving 4 speakers full range without stock sub and it sounds very good. I really dislike it's display. The screen picture you see as description is what you get. No adjustability, so it just look crowded with icons and graphics. The stereo will either display a picture or nothing depending on source. So if your on bluetooth which most people will, you won't get a picture in that box on the right. Just a blank spot. Still need more time to play with. Will see it's longevity.

Pros: Great sound processor Dual backup camera input Screen resolution Response is decent

Cons: Messy screen layout Prefer volume knob

I figured I'd wait to write my review after a couple weeks of owning the 501ex. It was an easy install as always with the accessories provided by this website. Bluetooth is quick to connect, sometimes too quick as it will connect while my glow plugs are warming up before I actually start my f250. Once I start it will sometimes show "No Service" on screen and all I have to do is press the play button and music picks back up where it left off. The phone call is clear on both sides which is a first for me with the provided microphone of an aftermarket radio. Backup screen is clear even with a cheap-o camera I bought elsewhere and helps me get close enough to things with this large truck so I don't hit it or stick out a few feet of where I should be. The steering wheel controls I purchased were a gamble as they weren't working with previously installed radio but work just fine now and install of this is quite easy once you figure out which wire you need along with power and ground. Everything that I've tested so far with radio functions as it should but I still haven't scratched the surface of what this is capable of. **will upload photos at a later time**

The Bluetooth on this head unit is horrible. It skips like a scratched Cd and the song info doesn't always update and can't recognize when you change songs. Everything else on the unit works good but if you want a good Bluetooth stereo for Bluetooth purposes I would not get this unit.

AppRadio Mode+: The Pioneer DVD receiver features AppRadio Mode+ for Apple iPhones (iOS 9.0+) with Lightning connector and select Android (OS 4.4+) smartphones. AppRadio Mode+ gives you the ability to view and control compatible iPhone and Android smartphone apps from the receiver's touchscreen using a one-cable USB connection. You'll need to download Pioneer's AppRadio app (for Apple iOS 7.0+ / Android OS 4.4+) and the AppRadioLive app (Apple iOS 9.0+ / Android OS 4.4+) onto your compatible iPhone or Android smartphone. Once you have downloaded the apps, your compatible iPhone or Android smartphone simply connects to the Pioneer DVD receiver's USB input using the cable that came with your mobile device. Now that the AppRadio and AppRadioLive apps are downloaded, and your compatible Apple iPhone or Android smartphone is connected the DVD receiver, you have access to maps, media, news information, and your events calendar through the receiver's intuitive touchscreen interface.

    • Maps: AppRadio Mode+, along with AppRadioLive use the native maps from your smartphone overlaid with INRIX live traffic data to provide live traffic and incident information to give you an estimated time of arrival at your chosen destination. Once you select your destination, you'll be guided along your route via an on-screen map and audible voice prompts. Selected destinations can also be sent to popular compatible apps, like Navmii or Genius Maps. You can even use Yelp to find points of interest along the way, including restaurant ratings and reviews.
    • Media: AppRadio Mode+ and AppRadioLive let you play your stored music library directly from your smartphone through the Pioneer DVD receiver. And, you can access over 60,00 internet radio stations from Radionomy. Or, you can access over 25,000+ radio shows and podcasts from your Stitcher account.
    • Events: In addition, AppRadio One and AppRadioLive keep you up-to-date on the latest news stories, RSS feeds and weather information with Feedly and Open Weather Map. With text-to-speech technology, the Pioneer receiver will even read you the latest news stories from the internet.
    • Calendar: The AppRadio One and AppRadio Live applications also keep your life organized and makes it easier to stay in touch and have fun. With multiple viewing options within its sleek, simple user interface, you can access your smartphone and Facebook calendars in one place, RSVP to Facebook events and use EventSeeker to find nearby concerts and events based on your personal interests and location.
Note: Your iPhone or Android smartphone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, LTE (4G), or WiFi for AppRadio to function. Access to AppRadio's online app services will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone or Android smartphone to connect to the Internet. App services may not be available in all regions.

Android MTP Playback: The Pioneer AVH-501EX supports MTP for playback & control of stored MP3/WMA/AAC music files on your Android (OS 4.0+) device through the Pioneer receiver's rear-panel USB port. In this mode, you get basic playback control (like Play/Pause & Previous/Next Track), plus song/artist/album information on the receiver's LCD touchscreen. During MTP connection, you cannot use your Android smartphone's touchscreen to control music playback and you cannot select music apps from your smartphone for playback. However, you can continue to listen to stored music on your Android smartphone through the head unit while you check your Calendar, Facebook, Texts, etc on your phone.

iPod Direct Connect: The Pioneer AVH-501EX's rear-panel USB port can be used to connect your Lightning Apple device or 30-pin iPhone 4S to the head unit. You'll need a Lightning-to-USB cable to connect your Apple device with Lightning connector, or a 30-pin to USB cable to connect your iPhone 4S. The USB connection allows for audio playback, music navigation, information display (including album art), and charging of your compatible iPhone or iPod.

    • Audio Control: From the head unit's touchscreen, you can search your iPod/iPhone's audio content by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, Composer, or Audiobook. You can also select Random & Repeat functions for a certain song or specific folder. You'll still be able to control your iPod or iPhone from the device's touchscreen too.
    • Song/Artist/Album Info: In addition, the head unit will display your iPod/iPhone's stored music information including Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song & Album title, as well as Album Art.
Note: If there are 10,000 songs or more on your iPod/iPhone, it will require almost one hour to fully populate the song list.

Smartphone Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 5V/1.5A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone or Android device when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. If your mobile device has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

The Category List displays all available categories and stations within those categories. Displayed Information such as Channel Name, Artist Name, & Song Title can be viewed on the head unit's LCD touchscreen. You also get station logo identification and album art on the unit's LCD touchscreen.
    • Category Scan + Instant Replay: During Category Scan, the live broadcast for each channel in the current category plays for six seconds at a time. The SiriusXM Instant Replay function lets you pause, rewind, and replay up to 60 minutes of live content from the station that you are currently listening to.
    • SmartFavorite Presets + Featured Favorites: You can store up to 18 SiriusXM Satellite Radio Station Presets with special tuning features such as TuneStart, TuneScan, & TuneMix (see below). Featured Favorites are groups of channels that are created by the SiriusXM Programming department allowing to discover new channels. Featured Favorite channels are dynamic and can change often, allowing you to discover new channels.
    • TuneStart, TuneScan, & TuneMix: TuneStart automatically start songs from the beginning when you tune to one of your SmartFavorite music channels stored on the current band of presets. TuneScan lets you scan through short previews of songs you may have missed on music channels stored on the current band of SmartFavorite presets. TuneMix plays a unique blend of songs from music channels stored in the current SmartFavorite preset band.
    • Traffic, Weather, & Sports: You can tune in and listen quickly to information pertaining to weather and traffic from a particular city you have specified. You can also be alerted when your favorite sports teams are playing so you can tune to the appropriate station quickly.
    • Parental Control: The SiriusXM Parental Control feature allows you to control access to channels that you consider inappropriate for younger listeners. When enabled, The Parental Control feature requires you to enter a 4-digit passcode to tune to the locked channels.
Note: A separate SiriusXM Satellite Radio subscription is required (operates on the XM Network). However, you can easily add this SiriusXM tuner to an existing Sirius or XM account for a Multi-Radio Discount Plan.

HD Radio: The Pioneer AVH-501EX's built-in HD Radio tuner lets you listen to the radio with the same fidelity as your digital music. HD Radio features high quality audio, FM multi-casting, and data services. With HD Radio, your FM stations offer near CD-quality sound, AM stations provide FM-like sound, and there is crystal-clear reception with no audio distortion. Best of all, HD Radio is 100% subscription free. The unit's tuner also supports analog AM/FM broadcasts.

    • Supertuner IIID: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.
    • Station Text/Album Art + RDS: AM/FM digital stations can offer text and data such as artist names and song titles. The head unit also supports Album Art from select HD Radio stations. For analog FM stations, the Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as song/artist information when listening to compatible RDS FM stations.
    • Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is possible to choose from up to 3 multicast programs (HD1 to HD3, and analog). There are also data programs for each program.
    • Reception Blending: If a digital broadcast reception condition gets poor, this unit automatically switches to the analog broadcast of the same frequency level. If this function is set to "On", the tuner switches between digital broadcast and analog broadcast automatically. If this function is 'Off', reception will be conducted within an analog broadcast.
    • BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest analog or HD stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.
    • Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

Note: HD Radio is the system for digital AM and FM broadcasting in the U.S. More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. Go to www.hdradio.com to check for HD Radio stations in your area.

If two Bluetooth devices were connected the last time, the two devices are connected to this unit automatically in the order that they are registered in the device list.

Hands-Free Communication (w/ External Mic): The PioneerAVH-501EX supports wireless hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. • Call Log: The 80 most recent calls dialed, received, and missed are stored in memory. You can browse them and call numbers from these lists.
      • Voice Dialing via Siri: When paired and connected with an iPhone 4S or later via Bluetooth, the Pioneer head unit has the ability to access Siri through its touchscreen controls and external microphone. You'll be able to dial a phone number or contact via voice command.
Note: Advanced phone operations that require attention, such as dialing numbers on the touchscreen monitor or adjusting Bluetooth settings, are prohibited while driving. The vehicle's parking brake must be engaged to access these functions.

Wireless Audio Streaming: The Pioneer AVH-501EX also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The head unit can stream music stored on your Bluetooth enabled device or music apps you have downloaded on your device. When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call.

    • Advanced Music Navigation: In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat), the AVH-501EX lets you browse your stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, etc.. (AVRCP 1.4 phones only; which includes Android 4.0+ and iPhone 5.0+).

Siri Eyes-Free provides access to many iPhone Siri functions such as music selection, making phone calls, and audible navigation (map will be displayed on iPhone); as well as listening to text messages, calendar information, and reminders. The head unit's audio is muted while Siri provides audible voice prompts.

Note: The head unit's touchscreen monitor will only indicate hands-free calling and song/artist information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Pioneer AVH-501EX; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

    Disc & USB Playback

    Audio Section

24-Bit/192kHz DAC: The Pioneer AVH-501EX is equipped with a 24-bit/192Hz digital-to-analog converter for superb quality audio playback from disc, USB, iPod/iPhone, Android, and Bluetooth.

MOSFET50 Internal Amplifier: The Pioneer AVH-501EX is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

    • CTA-2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)
Note: The power specifications for the AVH-501EX are compliant with the CTA-2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Technology Association (CTA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.

4V/6CH Preamp Outputs + Sub Control: The Pioneer AVH-501EX features three pair of 4.0-volt preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The unit's front and rear preamp output can be faded (front/rear), while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The Pioneer AVH-501EX lets you adjust the subwoofer preamp output's phase (normal/reverse) and volume (+10 to -24).

Crossovers: The AVH-501EX employs high-pass and low-pass crossovers to tailor the head unit to your connected speaker setup.

    • Standard: Allows you to set the high-pass and low-pass crossover network for a standard Front, Rear, and Subwoofer speaker setup using either speaker-level or low-level outputs.
      • HPF: The head unit's -6 to -24dB/octave high pass filter only allows frequencies higher than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125, 160, 200Hz) to your front and rear speakers through the unit's speaker-level or line-level outputs.
      • LPF: The subwoofer preamp output features an -6 to -24dB/octave low pass filter so only frequencies lower than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125, 160, 200Hz) are output to your connected subwoofer.
    • Network: Allows you to set the high-pass and low-pass crossover network for a complex 3-way speaker system with Highs, Mids, and Sub using low-level outputs only.
      • Highs: The high-pass crossover for your tweeters can be set to 1.25, 1.6, 2, 2.5, 3.15, 4, 5, 6.3, 8, 10, or 12.5 kHz with a -6 to -36dB/octave roll-off.
      • Mids: You can set a high-pass and low-pass crossover from your midrange/midbass drivers. The high-pass crossover can be set to 1.25, 1.6, 2, 2.5, 3.15, 4, 5, 6.3, 8, 10, or 12.5 kHz with a -6 to -36dB/octave roll-off. The low-pass crossover can be set to 26, 31.5, 40, 50, 63, 80, 100, 125, 160, 200, or 250 Hz with a -6 to -36dB/octave roll-off.
      • Lows: The low-pass crossover for your subwoofers can be set to 26, 31.5, 40, 50, 63, 80, 100, 125, 160, 200, or 250 Hz with a -6 to -36dB/octave roll-off.

EEQ (Easy EQ) w/ 13-Band Graphic EQ: There are seven stored equalizer curves which you can easily recall at any time. You can choose from - Powerful, Natural, Vocal, Super Bass, Flat, Custom 1, or Custom 2. The Custom 1 and Custom 2 EQ modes allow you to manually adjust the level (+/- 12dB) of each band of the head unit's 13-band graphic equalizer (50, 80, 125, 200, 315, 500, 800, 1.25k, 2k, 3.15k, 5k, 8k, and 12.5k Hz).

Auto EQ (Optional): The auto-equalizer automatically measures your car's interior acoustic characteristics, and then creates an auto-equalizer curve base on that information. The Pioneer CD-MC20 Auto-EQ microphone (130CDMC20, sold separately) is required to use this function. The Pioneer CD-MC20 Auto-EQ microphone plugs into your compatible Pioneer A/V receiver's rear-panel AUX 3.5mm input. The Auto-EQ microphone should be placed in the center of your vehicle's driver seat headrest facing forward for EQ measurement.

Audio Settings: The head unit provides further sound adjustments for your car audio system.

    • Listening Position & Time Alignment: For a better sound-stage you can select your optimal listening position. You can choose from All, Front Left, Front Right, or Front. You can also select to manually fine tune the sound stage, using Digital Time Alignment (DTA) by selecting the distance (0-200") for each individual speaker in the vehicle compared to your listening position.
    • Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. When the Advanced Sound Retriever is on, the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve to the original sound. There are two available levels of the Advanced Sound Retriever effect.
    • Bass Boost: You can easily boost the subwoofer bass level by using the Bass Boost function. The Bass Boost feature allows you increase the subwoofer level from 0 to +6 (12dB).
    • Loudness: The Loudness function compensates for deficiencies in the low- and high-frequency ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness to High, Mid, Low, or Off.
    • Speaker Level: You can adjust each speaker and sub channel independently from +10 to -24 to best even out the sound in your vehicle.
    • Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the unit's FM volume level, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4 dB to +4 dB.
    • Auto Level Control (ALC): This function automatically corrects the audio level difference between the music files and/or the sources.

Rear Speaker Setup: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

MIXTRAX: Drawing from Pioneer's rich DJ heritage and passion for music, MIXTRAX delivers a unique DJ infused listening experience to listeners in the car. MIXTRAX is an innovative Pioneer technology that creates a non-stop mix of your music library complete with a range of DJ-inspired effects. MIXTRAX takes your typical music listening experience and creates a non-stop mix of your music with 6 random DJ effects and transitions, by removing the breaks and pauses normally introduced between tracks and replacing them with various beats. MIXTRAX is compatible with USB-connected iPhone, iPod, USB MSC device, and select Android devices. There is also a Short Playback option which limits the amount of time each track plays.

Note: The MIXTRAX function does not work with AppRadioLive, Pandora, or Spotify.

Beep Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. You can turn this feature on or off.

    AV + OEM Connectivity

Dual AV Inputs: The Pioneer DVD receiver has dual AV inputs to connect two external audio/video sources. The head unit has a rear-panel 3.5mm minijack AV input for connecting a portable audio/video device. There is also a rear-panel composite video/stereo RCA AV input for connecting a video component such as a mobile TV tuner or game console.

Video Output: A single RCA composite video-output jack allows you to an add external monitor, such as rear headrest or overhead monitor (sold separately). The video output can display a DVD, USB, or AV-input video signal when its selected as the receiver's source, regardless if the vehicle's parking brake is engaged or not.

Camera Input: The AVH-501EX is equipped with a composite video rear-view camera input for the addition of an optional backup camera (130NDBC8, sold separately). In addition, you can turn the unit's AV input into a second camera input for adding a front camera (sold separately). The dedicated rear-view camera input offers two view modes -

    • Auto View: The unit features a function that automatically switches to the rear camera image. When the vehicle's transmission is put in reverse, the screen automatically switches to the rear view camera (violet/white wire of the harness must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching). Automatic video switching takes approximately 1.2 seconds.
    • Camera View: There is also a Camera View mode which allows you to manually bring up the rearview camera image on the receiver's touchscreen monitor to check what is behind you while driving. You can leave the Camera View mode on if you want to see the rearview image at all times; for instance when towing a trailer.
Note: The rear view camera feature is meant as a back-up aid only; never solely rely on the rear-view camera when backing-up. In addition to using the rear-view camera, always look behind you to make sure everything is clear when backing up your vehicle.

iDatalink Serial Port: This Pioneer DVD receiver is compatible with the iDatalink Maestro RR (794ADSMRR, sold separately); a web programmable module that will permit the aftermarket Pioneer receiver to work with select Ford/Lincoln/Mercury vehicles that feature the factory SYNC system, select GM vehicles with factory OnStar, select Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicles with U-Connect, plus select Honda/Acura, Toyota/Scion, Volkswagen & Subaru vehicles with factory digital amplifiers.

    • Retained Features: The Pioneer DVD receiver lets you retain select factory functions. Retained features will vary by vehicle via the iDatalink Maestro RR. Retained proprietary factory systems can include Ford Sync, GM OnStar, and Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep U-Connect. Other retained factory features may include Steering Wheel Controls, Aux Input, USB Port, Hands-Free Bluetooth, Voice Commands, Satellite Radio, Secondary Display, and more.
    • Extra Features: In some installations, the iDatalink Maestro RR let you configure the Pioneer receiver's touchscreen monitor to operate interior climate controls and provides extra visual data; such as User Selectable Gauges, Vehicle Info (Tire Pressure/Battery Voltage/Check Engine Codes/Door Ajar Warning), and Visual Park Assist. These extra features will vary by vehicle.

Note: The iDatalink Maestro RR is web programmable, which means you'll need to flash the iDatalink Maestro RR interface module with the correct firmware from iDatalink's website. In addition to flashing the iDatalink Maestro RR module, you'll also need a vehicle specific harness (sold separately). The Pioneer receiver's OEM Setup menu must also be configured with your compatible vehicle's factory system before initial operation.

Navigation Ready: The Pioneer AVH-501EX allows you to connect the Pioneer AVIC-U280 add-on navigation unit (130AVIC280, sold separately) through its RGB Input. This versatile hideaway unit allows you to switch to navigation mode with the touch of a button. Get to your destination by inputting an address or search through the POI library while enjoying whatever source is currently playing.

    Touchscreen & Remote Control

Clear Resistive Touchscreen: The AVH-501EX features a 6.2" clear resistive LCD touchscreen with a display resolution of 800 x 480 (RGB), for a total of 1,152,000 pixels. The clear resistive touchscreen is designed to enhance the visibility of on-screen graphics and images, making them appear clear and crisp. The LCD touchscreen allows you to control this unit and a connected component, such as an iPod/iPhone, a USB mass storage class device, or Bluetooth source. Menus appear on screen for making function choices, audio adjustments, and setting up the system.

    • Favorite Menu: You can register the desired menu items on the AVH-501EX's "Favorites" menu screen. Registering your favorite menu items allows you to quickly jump to the registered menu item by a simple touch on the favorites menu. Up to 12 menu items can be registered as a "Favorite".
    • Background (Wallpaper): You can select between a variety of preset background (wallpaper) images for the Menu screen and AV operation screen.
    • Picture Adjustments: You can store numerous video settings for the head unit's video sources and rearview camera; including brightness (adjusts the black intensity), contrast (adjusts contrast) color (adjusts color saturation), hue (adjust color tone), and Dimmer (adjusts brightness).
    • Widescreen Modes: You can choose from the following widescreen modes when playing back video - Full (4:3 picture is enlarged in the horizontal direction only; enabling you to enjoy a 4:3 picture without any omissions), Zoom (4:3 picture is enlarged in the same proportion both vertically and horizontally; ideal for a 16:9 screen), Normal (4:3 picture is displayed as it is), and Trimming (image is displayed across the entire screen with horizontal-to-vertical ratio left as is).
Note: In addition to the touchscreen controls, the unit includes frequently used buttons along the left edge of the screen.

Variable Illumination: The Pioneer AVH-501EX offers custom illumination for the OSD (on-screen display) and front-panel controls so you can match your vehicle's interior, plus MIXTRAX Illumination for DJ-style illumination in your vehicle.

    • On-Screen Display & Front-Panel Custom Illumination: You can adjust the color of the on-screen display; choose between red, amber, green, blue or white. The color of the button illumination can be set to red, amber, green, blue, white, or scan (constantly cycling through the color spectrum). You can also create a custom color for the unit's button illumination to match your vehicle's interior lighting (112 colors to choose from).
    • MIXTRAX Illumination: MIXTRAX features a club-style illumination that enhances the mood with a dynamic dance club-like lighting effect. As MIXTRAX begins, lights start pulsing to the beat of the music, adding an extra level of entertainment. You can choose among twelve patterns of lighting variations from sound pressure level or low-pass synchronization modes. The lighting effects work like a spectrum analyzer, reaching peak colors based on the intensity of the music.

Dimmer: To prevent the touchscreen display and button illumination from being too bright at night, the illumination is automatically dimmed when the car's headlights are turned on. The automatic dimmer function only works when the orange/white illumination wire in the wiring harness is connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit. You can also turn on or off the dimmer manually. You can even set a timer for the dimmer to turn on or off.

Remote Functions: The Pioneer AVH-501EX DVD receiver includes a wireless remote control and offers steering wheel control capability (adapter required).

    • Wireless Remote Control: The Pioneer AVH-501EX includes an IR remote control (CXE5116) for wireless operation of the DVD receiver and your connected devices. The included remote does offer Bluetooth phone functions.
    • Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately).

Parking Brake Interlock: This unit has a parking brake interlock system that prohibits viewing of video programming and operating certain controls when the vehicle is in motion. In order to watch video on the in-dash monitor, the vehicle must be stopped with the parking brake engaged. The head unit's light green wire must be connected to your vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. The head unit's touchscreen will display "Attention! Viewing of front seat video source while driving is strictly prohibited", if you try to watch a video when your vehicle is in motion.

i really do not know. I got this radio because it is the only pioneer that will fit my jeep jk. My old radio died after a year and I drive 6 hour a day. Everyday I find something new about this radio an I like it so far. Thanks Manny
    [ Emmanuel B.  Aug 10, 2019 ]
    A
Yes. There is a dedicated rca video cable input for a camera on the back of the unit, but depending on the type of camera, it can be challenging to install yourself. You need to run power to the camera and run the video wire from the rear of the car to the head unit itself. Unless you feel comfortable taking apart interior panels and possibly drilling holes from trunk to inside of car, you may need professional installation. But it will work. Just make sure you get a good camera, not some cheap Chinese thing you can find on Amazon for $20-50. They are just crap and quit working shortly after installation.

You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.

Sorry, I have no idea. Is be surprised if it didn't, though. I connected an inexpensive aftermarket back up camera to it with no problem. Its connection is just a standard, generic over.

I'm thinking about getting this for my 2008 Porsche cayenne. Would my stock flip out back up cam work with this unit?

    A
We don't carry a adapter that would allow you to use the factory backup camera with an aftermarket radio in that 2008 Porsche. The good news is you can use pretty much any aftermarket backup camera you want with that Pioneer. If you have questions about how you will replace the camera you can connect with one of our friendly product advisors here: https://bit.ly/2QNxGQB

It does not come with navigation, I believe you can buy a separate unit to add it. I have an iPhone and the pioneer app that allows me to connect my phone to the unit and use the phones navigation on the unit. There are other pioneer head units that have navigation but they are higher in price.

No, it does not. I just use my phone and Google maps and Bluetooth it to the pioneer so I hear the instructions over my car stereo. Works well.

    Q
Can I wire the built in amp to a subwoofer and use the preamp outputs to a dedicated amp for the rest of the speakers?
    [ John  Nov 08, 2018 ]

    A
No. You need to use the pre amp output to run to an external amp to power a sub. You can use the built in amp to run the front and rear speakers built it won't power a sub.
    [ Paul  Nov 10, 2018 ]
    A
It's an internal amp, and like 14 watts. Wouldn't do anything for a sub. It's plenty enough for regular speakers though. Use the dedicated amp for the sub. Or use 2 amps, plenty of outputs on this thing.

I'm no expert on car stereos but I believe you cannot. The built in amp is output to the 4 speaker wires. Hope this helps

Will I lose my CD changer with this unit? I currently have a factory installed 6 disc changer. Will this work with that?
    [ James  Aug 21, 2018 ]

    A
Probably. I cant really see how you would connect an external cd changer, even if it were a pioneer brand. Like someone else said, this unit is a dvd receiver and really excels at that and bluetooth audio.
    [ Paul  Nov 10, 2018 ]
    A
If your changer is in the dash, then you probably will replace the entire stereo with this unit - if it is in the back, you might be able to keep it as an aux input but not sure how the controls would work. That said, for us, this was a no brainer - I got rid of all my CDs years ago, and the point of this stereo is to add Bluetooth, Pandora, and more modern listening so I could stream all my music from my phone.
    [ Cameron  Aug 21, 2018 ]

You could call Crutchfield to make sure but I did not see any option for a CD Changer.

    Q
it says the radio has a peak of 50 watts per channel, what do you need for that kind of output?
    [ hunter  Aug 17, 2018 ]
    1 answer
    A
Well, peak output is what the speakers will see at maximum volume, so for normal listening specs it would be approximately 1/3 of that or 17 watts rms +/-, and even stock speakers like I use would be fine normally

Yes, but the screen does not really physically move, tilt, etc. The contrast and brightness change a bit so that it appears to be so.

Can I operate the Pioneer AVH-501EX from my steering wheel controls?
    [ Quincy  May 16, 2018 ]

You need another adapter that you have to tune to the frequency of your cars controls. Crutchfield sells that adapter
    [ Paul  Nov 10, 2018 ]
    A
Maybe. The radio and car must match - the Crutchfield web site will tell you when you supply the make, model and year of your car as well as information on the steering wheel itself. You'll also need order the install kits(s) that Crutchfield ties the radio.
    [ MICHAEL  May 16, 2018 ]
    A
Yes, you will have to purchase the package which includes a steering wheel control harness.
    [ Jon  May 16, 2018 ]
    A
It can with the use of a box that monitors the CAN bus in the car. Each of the conversion boxes is for a specific brand of car and Crutchfield can do most of the wiring on the bench to make it easier to install.
    [ Bruce  May 16, 2018 ]
    A
Yes u can, but u will need a aswc1 axxess control module. U have to order that separately.
    [ Daniel  May 16, 2018 ]
    A
From what I've read, yes. There are adapters you can get. Crutchfield should be able to tell you exactly what part you need.
    [ Martin  May 16, 2018 ]
    A
Yes, but you have to buy and adaptor. Ask crutchfield which one you need. Pay them to wire this into the harness as well. Money well spent.

Not that I am aware of. The audio of the video will come through the generic bluetooth channel. Just DVDs and files off the USB line.

Can I upload a picture to use as a background?
    [ Ryan  Mar 18, 2018 ]

You can put your pictures on a flash drive and save them as backgrounds. That's what I do. When using a USB flash drive you can switch between audio/video/pictures. Navigate to the pic you want and save it as background image.
