About the Pioneer GM-D8604

Cool power

Pioneer's sharp-looking GM-D8604 4-channel amplifier can send 100 watts RMS to each of your front and rear speakers, for powerful music that'll get you and your car rockin'. Highly efficient Class D technology keeps this powerful amp running as cool as it looks, and allows for a compact chassis that fits in a lot of out-of-the-way spaces. If you're building a big system in stages, you can use this versatile amp at first to drive a pair of speakers with the front two channels while bridging the rear channels together to power a subwoofer with up to 300 watts RMS. Later on, you can get Pioneer's big mono amp to drive your subs, and switch this amp over to run all four of your full-range speakers.

Connecting and tuning made simple

If your car stereo doesn't have RCA outputs, you can use the speaker-level inputs to hook this amp into your system — the amplifier switches its input mode automatically when it detects the high-level signal. And the built-in high- and low-pass filters let you adjust the sound for your car's interior, whether you're driving speakers or subs.

Great value!

Great "little" amp that was packaged nicely, and has all the features I needed for my Jeep Wrangler. It is a solid device that delivers good clean power to my speakers. I have it wired as a 3 channel powering 2 6.5" 2-ways up front, and a bridged output to a single 12" subwoofer. You can beat the value given the relatively low cost for a class D amplifier. The only negative thing is the switches and adjustments are set in from the side panel. That means I have to get a tiny screwdriver to make any adjustments.

Great amp for stock head units

Joshua from Hauula, HI on 9/4/2018

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Bought it for my 2013 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab work truck. It was small enough to easily fit under my drivers seat so that was awesome due to the space limitation of the truck. Since I didn't want to replace my stock touchscreen head unit, I had to look for an amp with speaker inputs. This amp fit bill perfectly. Being a Class D amp means it also runs cooler. I got the front channels connected to Rockford Fosgate R165 S separates in the doors that push them pretty hard. The rear channels are bridged and connected to a Punch P1 10" sub in a custom made sealed box. It hits pretty hard. This amp may not win in a sound off competition but it does it's job perfectly.

Pros: Compact, runs cool, easy install

Cons: None

Lots of clean sounding power

Chris from Pasco, WA on 3/5/2018

I'm using this amp to power 4 Polk coax speakers and it really juiced them up well. Since a large number of speakers you'll buy are 4 ohm, this is a smart amp purchase if you're looking for a quality product at a fair price. I managed to get mine at a good price point so it isn't a rip off by any means. My speakers were rated for 100W RMS each so getting them their full power was important for me. I don't notice any unusual sounds/hisses and that's with me using the stock head unit! It's not a feature rich amp but it does have HPF/LPF options and your typical gain control. Just remember that you'll need a smaller flathead screw driver or something similar to adjust some of the settings. Pioneer amps are a smart play unless you need significantly more power than what's offered here. I'll recommend this amp for a system builder putting together anything that needs extra juice, otherwise you're risking not getting the full experience from your speakers.

Pros: Doesn't break the bank Great for simpler setups On the smaller side

Cons: Not a feature rich amp

Love Pioneer products, the performance is this amp. is outstanding, I use a set of Morel Maximo 6 1/2" component speakers in front and a pair of Morel 6x9s in the rear of my 2017 Nissan Sentra and this amp. provide all the power I need (100w RMS) without distortion, this is connected to the factory radio with a Clarion EQS-755 preamp and the sound are crisp and very clear. Compact size, simple and the carbon fiber finish is awesome. Do not hesitate to purchase this great amp., I install this along with a Pioneer GM-D8601 (1 channel amp.) and the combination is superb. (check my review of the Pioneer GM-D8601).

Pros: Compact design, very nice looking, powerfull, hit it hard and doesn't overheat under stress.

Cons: Plastic bolts base (you need to put it on a firm, flat base).

Power with clarity in a small package

Kevin from Chattanooga, TN on 10/3/2017

I purchased this amplifier to run 2 set's of C2570X JL Audio 5×7/6×8 in the front and rear doors of a 99 mercury mountaineer and they now sound elegant with enough bass mids and unbelievable highs like JL is known for !size for size, they are very compatible with the sound of Focal! And the Pioneer G-MD 8604 made that happen. And it being a 4 channel amp and the power it brings, it's very affordable! I would recommend it to anyone

Pros: Small enough to have lots of places for mounting. It's a class S D amplifier. You can use it as a 2,3,or 4 channel. Except for using a sub, it can be bridged to 2 ohms and it will produce 600 watts. Other amplifiers with those creditentionals cost upwards of 4×'s that.

Cons: This is my con con about it. I'm used to having external knobs to adjust the crossover high and low pass, but the Pioneer you have to use a flat screwdriver.

Works great. Restoring an older car and bought this to power the speakers I am also putting in. Pairing it with some kicker 6x9 and some 6 1/2's. Speakers are rated at 100 watt RMS and amp is rated at 100 watt RMS at 4 ohm and it sounded great when testing the equipment out. Amp didn't break a sweat or get warm at all.

Works great. Have it 2014 Altima running Pioneer TS-SWX2502 woofer with Pioneer TS-A6995R speakers in the rear deck. Did alot of research and questioning before buying set up. Everything gets all the power it needs with no distortion and barely gets warm. Have Rockford Fosgate Prime R165-S running straight from the factory head unit with sound faded 3 to the front now everything balanced may upgrade to Pioneer GM-D9605 5 channel later so everything get power but it not really necessary. With this set up all music stay inside for my enjoyment unless I put down back windows.

Pros: Give all the power without heating up, no distortion nice small convenient size have it bolted on back of the woofer with a capacitor

Cons: NONE

When I bought my Camry, I had the option of going to an upgraded system w/the car, but they packed so much junk in it, it would have been an extra $2K. Since I've been using Crutchfield for all my car audio needs for >40 years, I just accepted the factory installed garbage. One call to Crutchfield & they had me set up w/a perfect system for the car. I like to rattle the windows, & this amplifier delivers, easily powering 3 great speakers on each side, + a thumper in the trunk. Also, I never have to worry about the music distorting if I turn it up loud. I admit I didn't realize Pioneer was still capable of making such good audio equipment.

Just installed this amplifier using 4 gauge wire for power and ground, using 14 gauge speaker wire to some Rockford Fosgate Speakers, and this amplifier fills the entire frequency range out significantly better than the 22W RMS from my Kenwood headunit. Couldn't ask for a better amplifier for the price point. Would definitely recommend to anyone.

Pros: Price, Power, features, style

Cons: Would be near impossible to fit 0/1 gauge cabling.

I bought this amp to run my two front door kicker CSS 43CSS674 speakers at 100 W and to run my 12in Kicker Comp c series CWCS124 sub woofer at 300 W bridged. Let me tell this thing could not take running the door speakers and the sub at the same time past half volume. It would start to smell after about 30 min of playing music continuously. Also I noticed that when i did turn up the volume more than half there was a significant loss of power to my sub. So much so I couldn't hear it. If you don't plan on listening to music not that loud (less than half volume) then is is the amp for you.

Pros: It is priced fairly Looks great Works well at half of your cars volume to less than half

Cons: Overheats and smells Doesn't put out what it says it does Can't keep up with my sub at high volumes

Great little amp. I am using it to bi amp one set of components allowing me to have complete control over the balance between the woofers and tweeters. No noise from amp at all, just clean power. Plenty of power for most music unless I'm listening to an album that hasn't been mastered yet.

Pros: Excellent price, clean power for my components, fit under my seat like it was made for it.

Cons: Very small complaint: for adjusting gain levels, I wish there was more tension on those little knobs. You can't feels when you've made an adjustment only see.. kind of.

Purchased this amp to drive my door speakers. Immediately started getting a popping sound coming from the speakers. Tried replacing all the cables, even purchased a new head unit. Great amp

Installed one of these in my 04 Silverado, that had the bose system, first upgrade was the head unit to a Kenwood, stock tweeters being 12 years old, took a dump. So I decided it was time for a serious upgrade. I put polk components in the front door with a little modification, the tweeters stayed next to the woofer not in the original pillar location. I put polk 4x6 in the rear doors. I decided on the pioneer for several reasons, class d power so it is smaller than others, and the power output was right in the range I wanted. Everything is easy to adjust on this amp, pretty straight forward. All of the terminals use an Allen key which is a huge improvement over the old Phillips head that was used in the past. I don't have the amp turned up as high as I want yet, I am still tweaking the re on the head unit to get the right sound but there is plenty of power left in the amp.

Pros: Compact size Looks good Easy to adjust

Cons: None

WOW, am I ever glad I purchased the Pioneer GM-D8604 from Crutchfield! What I love. Easy hook up, sleek design, relatively compact. And OH the quality of the sound. I have installed this amp inside my boat powering Two Polk DB692's and Two MM651UM speakers outside on the fly bridge and rear deck area and WOW. Completely satisfied with the strong volume of the set up and clarity of the music. The instruction manual lacks clarity for possible setups other than the standard one speaker per channel with all channels used. I wanted to connect two sets of speakers in parallel on channel A and later connect the sub to channel B. I suppose there are many possible ways to connect gear and Pioneer didn't see need to cover some atypical situations. I called the helpful experts at Crutchfield and AJ helped me figure out what I should do for my situation. Invaluable. I have a Polk MM1040UM sub on the way that I will integrate into the system and expect even greater satisfaction. I fully recommend the Pioneer GM-D8604 from Crutchfield Audio. and Thanks AJ for your support.

Pros: compact, attractive, great specifications for audio quality and POWER. It has made the installed head unit and speakers SHINE. Love it Highly recommend Pioneer GM D8604 and Crutchfield.

Cons: Very few. The manual doesn't explain well enough for non-geeks to cipher for atypical situations. But, thanks to the Crutchfield techs I was able to get the solution for my situation. Thanks AJ.

One amp to power everything!

Christopher T. from Utah on 10/6/2015

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Where to start...I have this amp to power my entire system. Previously, i had this running my interior 4 speakers only, but after thinking, i removed my bass amp, this amp can run it all. I bridged channels 3 and 4 on this amp for my sub @ 2 ohms for 300 watts rms. Then channels 1 and 2 i have wired for all 4 interior speakers set @ 2 ohms, pushing 75 watts rms to each speaker. Even if i've lost my fader, i have this one amp paired perfectly to my 10" kicker CVR running at 300 watts rms itself @ 2 ohms and my Alpine Type S Component speakers running at 80 watts rms per speaker. This amp is perfect. I did add a Pac Line Level controller so i have a bass knob. I couldn't be happier!!!

Pros: One amp to power my whole system of 4 door speakers and a 10" sub.

Cons: None!

i knew I wanted a 4 way amp that could really drive my kicker speakers. gets very loud, can drive on free way with windows down and the sound can overcome wind noise. no problems with the amp. i know another user said a channel blew on theirs, but who knows if it was installed right, no offense to you. mines fine and i plan on pairing my system with a hideaway sub like BassOrdinance or Kicker. that should give me a full range.

It is not a bad amp. I swapped out my Kicker ZX350.4 4-Channel for this amp. My kicker amp kept frying my aux cords for some reason. I must say this amp has made my speakers more clear but less bass. If I could I would probably rather use my Kicker amp. This is the first Pioneer product I have ever purchased. I give it 4stars because the amp 2 frequency dial arrived busted. It spins in endless circles so tuning my rear speakers is next to impossible. I don't see how this could be damaged during shipping. If I'm paying this much for a product I expect it to function properly. All in all the amp works well. It produces loud enough music. I only use CD's & you can tell the quality. For the price this is a good amp in my opinion as far as how it sounds. (Polk audio DB component speakers)

Pros: 100RMS @ 4-Channels. Sub Input. Sleek.

Cons: some cheap parts.

I bought two of these to run my front stage and my 6 X 9's. my front stage consists of a six and a half inch two ways system made by Rockford Fosgate, accompanied by 4 inch midrange speakers made by JL Audio. The 6 X 9's are alpine type R. both amps are bridged. I needed amplifiers that would play relentlessly at high volume without overheating. These fit the bill!the sound quality, dynamic range, and signal to noise ratios are within acceptable limits. As a matter of fact, they sound as good as any amplifier I've ever heard, except for an old school Phoenix Gold MS-2250.at this price point, I would put this amp up against any amplifier!

Pros: decent power, runs cool, sound quality, low distortion, and small footprint.

Cons: power, ground, and remote is kind of difficult to connect. Also, the way in which you bridge these amps is a little unorthodox compared to typical designs.

Can't handle high volume . I replaced a sound stream amp with same wattage. This amp does well at Low volume. Anything at mid volume up, the amp shuts down. In comparison, this amp is weak. Wish the sound stream would have not lost a channel! ??

Pros: Simple install

Cons: Can't handle volume

I chose this amp to run 2 sets of Polk db6501 components. Installed in a crew cab 2012 GMC Sierra with the stock head unit. I couldn't be happier! They make the Polk components really sing! It took a little tuning and head scratching to get the sound how I liked but now the sound is amazing! Running in 4 CH mode the gains are up only about a quarter of the way and that's all my ears can take. I just got finished running it really loud for an hour or so and it was barely warm to the touch. A++

Pros: Runs super cool, perfect size. Take your time and install correctly.

Cons: None

This is such a good amp. I have it powering 6.5 polk audio components in the front and 6x9's polks in the rear. It really brought my speakers to life. I can play them as loud as possible and get no distortion what so ever. Also the amp stays cool and is very small and light weight. Unlike the reviewer (Rando R, Shreveport La) i dont get any thumps at start up and i have no humming sounds at all. This was a great buy for me!

Pros: Small, powerful and stays cool

Cons: none

Man o Man this is a great amp and small for the power it produces this thing has yet to get hot even at high power levels easy to install and is really a good looking unit.

Pros: powerfull yet small runs cool even at high power levels looks good too.

Cons: due to rca signal turn on circuitry in amp and CAN data network type accessory turn on trigger in OEM head amp turns on when doors are opened. Plus one nasty thump from speakers at engine start even with head unit off.

CEA 2006 Compliant: The Pioneer GM-D8604 4-channel amplifier power ratings are measured according to the Consumer Electronics Association's CEA-2006 standards. These standards allow you to accurately compare the rated power output of all CEA-2006 compliant amplifiers, even from different brands. Manufacturers who adhere to the standards can display the CEA-2006 logo on their products and packaging. CEA-2006 Specifications:

  • Power Output:
    • 100 watts x 4 at 4-ohms with <1% THD+N
    • 150 watts x 4 at 2-ohms with <1% THD+N
    • 300 watts x 2 at 4-ohms with <1% THD+N (bridged)
  • Signal to Noise Ratio: 75 dBA

Class-FD Amp: A Class-D amplifier offers higher power in a smaller chassis than conventional Class-AB amp designs. Pioneer's exclusive Class-FD design not only delivers full-range Class-D amplification, but is more efficient than other designs. The result is clear full-range sound in a small amplifier. The ultra-compact design provides many installation options.

Channel Layout: The GM-D8604 is a 4-channel amplifier; both halves are bridgeable, so it can be wired as 4-channel, 3-channel, or 2-channel. Rather than front and rear, the two sections of the amp are labeled A and B (on both the inputs and outputs).

Auto Turn-on: When using a high voltage speaker level input, a signal sensing circuit will automatically turn the amp on and off along with the source unit.

Controls

Input Select Switch: The amplifier's input select switch allows you to choose between 4-channel and 2-channel mode. The 4-channel mode requires that two pair of RCA inputs be connected to the amplifier's A and B inputs, while the 2-channel mode only requires one pair connected to the A inputs.

Gain Control: There are independent gain controls for the A and B amplifier sections, each is continuously variable from 200 mV to 6.5 V.

Crossovers: The A and B sections also have independent crossover controls, each has:

  • Crossover Select Switch: three position switch; LPF (Low Pass Filter), Off (crossover is bypassed), HPF (High Pass Filter)
  • Frequency: continuously variable from 40 to 500 Hz

Connections

Power: The power and ground connections are set screw terminals that will accommodate up to 4-gauge wire. The included 3mm Allen wrench is used to tighten and loosen the terminals. Pioneer recommends different power and ground wire gauges based on the length of the wire:

  • 8-Gauge: up to 14' 9"
  • 6-Gauge: up to 23' 7"
  • 4-Gauge: up to 37' 5"

Remote Turn-on: The remote connection is a set screw terminal that will accommodate up to 8-gauge wire. The included 3mm Allen wrench is used to tighten and loosen the terminals.

Speaker Connections: The speaker output screw terminals will accommodate up to 8-gauge wire. The included 3mm Allen wrench is used to tighten and loosen the terminals.

Signal Input: The amplifier features two pair of stereo RCA inputs (A/B). If no line level signal is available, use the included speaker wire to RCA adapters.

RCA Output: The one pair of preamp output jacks provide a convenient way to daisy-chain an additional amplifier without running another set of RCA cables from the front of the vehicle to the amplifier location. The output is identical to the A channel input and is not affected by the internal crossover.

[ Jayden  May 04, 2017 ]

It is possible to use this amp with the first 2 channels powering those speakers and then bridging the other 2 channels. This amp outputs 300 watts RMS at 4 ohms when you bridge those 2 channels together. HTH! My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=101

Can I bridge this to 2 channels at 4 ohms then only use one of those channels for 200 w rms mtx 8 ohm tweeters wired in parallel? Would the output be in stereo?
[ Sharon  Apr 16, 2017 ]
1 answer
A
I'm not aware of any tweeters that are rated to handle that much wattage RMS but, you could bridge the amp down to two channels and use them to power a left & right pair of speakers (or tweeters) that are at least 4 Ohms. 8 Ohm speakers/tweeters would get around half the rated output so up to 150 watts x 2 in this scenario. You will have to use an amplifier installation kit. Buy the kit that fits the amplifier and follow the directions on the amplifier installation instructions. There is a lot of information online as well as from crutch field to help you with the installation. So simply no you cannot install it with factory wiring you must use a amplifier installation kit.

[ Zyzak  Apr 25, 2016 ]
1 answer
A
The Pioneer amp is stable down to 1 Ohm per channel so it can certainly work with 3 Ohm speakers without issue. You can expect up to 125 watts RMS per channel at a true 3 Ohm impedance. Keep in mind; the added resistance of the speaker wire will present much closer to a 4 Ohm final load with the JBL speakers. I hope that helps! As Lance Holmes mentions above, it would be a lot easier if you know what the crossover frequencies in your factory system are; otherwise it's basically guessing. You could also install new components that include their own crossovers to replace your factory component system. You can find a full listing of aftermarket component speakers we carry on our website here: http://www.crutchfield.com/g_410/Component-Systems.html?tp=106 I hope that helps. This unit does not come with the bass knob. The bass knobs use an RJ-25 telephone type connector on both ends. The amp would have to have the RJ-25 connection to be able to add the control knob. Any amp we sell that includes the control would have that type of connection. Hope that helps.

I Use it in conjunction with a 1000 watt mono alpine amp with two type R alpine 12" subs in a sealed enclosure. So I don't drive the low frequency information through the pioneer amp. It works well for that. Not sure how it pushes the full frequency. Sorry I can't really honestly answer your question.

I use it to supply my four alpine speakers for mids and highs and a 1000 watt alpine mono amp to push my dual alpine subs. Awesome!
[ Preston  Jul 01, 2015 ]
A
Class D amplifiers use output transistors as switches to control power distribution - the transistors rapidly switch on and off at least twice during every signal cycle. Class D amps boast higher efficiency, produce less heat, and draw less current than traditional Class AB designs. Class D amplifiers produce higher distortion than AB designs due to the high-speed switching on and off of the transistors, but this distortion occurs at frequencies above hearing, and is easily removed by a low-pass filter. You can find out more about the different classes of amps here: http://www.crutchfield.com/learn/learningcenter/car/amplifiers_glossary.html

Can i use this amp for 4 compo speakers 50w RMS each in 2 channel then a single 10in sub 250w nominal for the next 2 channel. Is this safe for the system? If it is, hows does the connection diagram appear. Head unit with 3 pair RCA.
[ Dehens  Jun 06, 2015 ]
1 answer
A
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: You can wire 4 speakers onto the two channels of this amp as long as the speakers are 4 ohm speakers. This will drop the impedance to 2 ohms on the front two channels and output 150 watts RMS which will be split in half. As long as the subwoofer is also 4 ohm then you can run it in bridged mode on the rear two channels. This will allow you to get 300 watts RMS for the subwoofer. As long as the speakers and subwoofer are 4 ohm this will be a safe setup. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

Im not sure about that. You should be able to find something in an online manual
[ Preston  Jan 26, 2015 ]
A
Nope, you'll need one coax cable per channel. So, 4 RCA cables for 4 speakers. Good luck!
[ Matt  Jan 26, 2015 ]
A
Robert, One set will run all four speakers. My truck has speakers in all four doors, it's a crew cab. My installation was a bit rushed, because we where leaving for vacation the next day, and taking the truck on a long drive from California to the Grand Canyon. I was having trouble getting one set of RCAs to work properly. I really wanted to have all four speakers running. so I switched the input to 2 channel mode, and ran it that way for the trip. I wasn't able to use the fader of course, but I got sound out of all four speakers. I sorted out the wiring issue when we got back. I'm very happy with this amp. sounds great!
[ Lance  Jan 23, 2015 ]
A
Yes you need to run 2 sets of RCA's
[ Josh  Jan 23, 2015 ]
A
A set of rca's (2) will run channel A. It would be best to run 2 sets of rca's, so you can get channel A& B. Or if you want, you can run a set of rca's and use splitters, so you get both channels. This I what I had to do.

Thanks for your question. For information on pairing amps with subs I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system.

Q
Can I connect a tube subwoofer with nomjnal input power of 300watt on bridged channel b of this amp? and front door speakers on channel a as well?

George, It is doable. You need to have at least two sets of Pre-Amp outputs on your receiver, most will have three. I would hook up the sub-woofer first from your receiver to the amp and then to the sub and check to make sure it works properly. Then hook-up the front connection from your receiver to the amp and then connect your speakers. This should work.
