Connecting and tuning made simple

If your car stereo doesn't have RCA outputs, you can use the speaker-level inputs to hook this amp into your system  — the amplifier switches its input mode automatically when it detects the high-level signal. The amp's got a low-pass filter that lets you quickly sharpen and focus the bass to suit your car's interior, and also includes a wired remote boost that lets you control the bass from the front seat.

Amazing amp especially for the money. I have it on 2 rockford fosgate p3 subs and they freakin pound and the gain is only a third of the way up. If you are considering this amp, just buy it, you won't be disappointed.

Pros: Price, power versus price, well built product by pioneer yet again

Amazing mono amp for the price. Currently driving two Alpine Type R 10s wired up for 2 ohms total. Wish I could have gone 1 ohm overall to get the max out of the subs, but I can't complain with what I've got so far. Haven't had a single issue over the last 3 months with it. Even convinced me that I can safely stray from Alpine amplifiers. Would definitely get one again and will easily recommend to anyone.

Pros: Power, efficiency, size, style, and preamp in and out

Cons: Fitting 0/1 gauge wire near impossible

Versatility, Power, and Efficient

Vince from San Bruno, CA on 6/22/2017

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Just installed this amp and DANG IS THIS AMP STRONG! Wiring options for this amp raises the value of this amp, with the STABLE ability to run from 4 ohms all the way down to 1 ohm. Currently running this amp to power 2 12" Alpine Type-R's wired at 2 ohms. Many will say that I'm still under powering my subs but 400w to each sub, for a total of 800w RMS, efficiently and cleanly! Upgraded from an Alpine Mrp-M650 which was only pushing 600w RMS. Fairly small in size considering it's power rating, clean sleek finish, and the bass boost knob is another awesome feature! I don't think there is another amp available that will this much BANG for the buck.

Pros: Versatility of ohm stability. POWER! Efficient clean power! Self protection from bass junkies like myself, hahaha. Price, cannot beat the BANG for buck value.

Cons: None

Not a remote gain knob!!

Ferris from Lawton ok on 6/20/2017

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I give 4 stars for a great product stable powerful no complicated setups but i dont give 5 stars because i would like to see the knob as a remote gain control, not a remote bass boost @50hz, i bought the amp under the imperssion it was wired remote gain control. Also no subsonic filter. But it will give rated power and then some. And runs fairly cool with small foot print!

Pros: Powerful, cool, pretty, delivers rated power, 1 ohm stable, remote bass boost @50hz

Cons: No subsonic filter No remote gain knob (includes remote bass boost which imho is almost useless, but better than nothing)

I don't listen to real loud music but I needed a little more bass. I'm not the window shaker type, but I tell ya this amp will do it no problem! You can't beat crutchfields price either! With Jason's help at Crutchfield and the awesome tech support I paired the d9601 pioneer with two polk audio m 1040s in a qpower box in my 2012 Chevrolet silverado crew cab and it hits lows that are deep and carry like 15" best system I've ever owned and with research on Crutchfield easy to navigate website I installed it all myself plus wiring tech support explained how this mono amp has two speaker ports wired together internally in amp for going from 4ohm to 2ohms convenience without extra wires to break the 4ohm down amp does the work for you! This site is by far the most knowledgeable caring Internet site I have found and I've been looking a long time. I'm a life long customer! Thank you Crutchfield;)

Pros: Spent not a whole lot and have the most power and deepest bass I've ever had and have spent thousands at local stereo shops. No more !

Cons: Bad news for local stereo shops lol NO COMPLAINTS should've met Crutchfield knowledge years ago!

Great Budget True 1200 Watt Subwoofer Amplifier

Dereck from Old School, NC on 1/17/2017

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I review and test a lot of car audio amplifiers, many being "old school". But I kept getting asked over and over to try out this Pioneer GM-D9601. What's this newfangled, budget, 1200 watt Class D amp from Pioneer all about. Before I go further, I'd like to explain Pioneer's importance to car audio...they introduced the first car stereo component in 1975, one of the first CD player's in 1984 and the first removable face radio (late 80's). They have always been a "Pioneer" in the car audio industry. All that said, let's get to the low down about the amp at hand. The GM-D9601 is about the dimensions as a sheet of standard notebook paper. Amazing to me they can pack over 1000 watts in such a small package. The amp has RCA inputs/outputs, adjustable crossover (12dB/oct), 4ga power/ground and 8ga speaker connections. Also included is mounting screws, a remote bass knob and cable. The exterior is very slick, the top appears to be a faux carbon fiber. Remove the six screws holding on the bottom plate (don't to this, I did it just for your benefit) and gaze at the beautiful circuit board. Plenty of filtering capacitors to keep noise levels down and a nice, beefy transformer. I put the amp on my SMD AD-1 Amplifier Dyno and got the following results: Amp delivered on ratings: rated 800w @ 2 ohms, 14.4Vdc - Measured 806w @2 ohms, 14.14Vdc rated 1200w @1 ohm, 14.4Vdc - Measured 1206w @1 ohm, 13.85Vdc Great job Pioneer! Delivered rated power with less vol

Pros: Great power for the money, build quality is high, bass knob/cable included, does rated power, small size, efficient

Cons: no subsonic filter, wish it did 1200w at 2 ohms instead of 1 ohm

Massive power in a small pack. Have it powering one 15 P3 Fosgate in an Audi A6. I'm only utilizing half the power of this amp and it's enough to loosen the hinges on my trunk. Insulated sealed box is the way to go, running @1ohm ,one channel.... and wow, the lows are very low. I have had no problems with the amp heating up and I am not using any fans or air movement.. this is definitely a solid amp for Pioneer

Pros: Lasting power, doesn't overheat , awesome price

Cons: Have not found any yet

I was not sure about this amp but got a great deal on it so I got it hooked it up the minute I got it I have two 15 jl audio w3 and bridged it and it hit alot harder than my 1200watt amp after 12 minutes of bamming I smelled my speakers working to hard so I hooked it up with out bridged still hits hard I'm pretty happy with it so I'm gonna add more speakers I know kicker CVR hit really hard so I will probably hook up 4 of them to this amp . I'm impressed instantly I seen a big difference in sound and power I think it's too much for my 15jl audio w3 stoked!!!

Great Amplifier

JB Powers from Los Angeles on 2/4/2016

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This is a great amplifier, puts out a true 1200 watts rms and is a mono block amp with a multi output connection. No need to bridge because it wont boost the power. As for the bass knob, it will work once the amplifier is tuned properly. As for the people saying the amplifier is shutting off, check to make sure youre actually at 1 ohm with a multimeter and As long as you have the juice to push it, this amp wont let you down.

Pros: True 1200watts 1ohm stable Mono block Bass knob Class D Amplifier Small and powerful

Cons: Can not stack No 1/0 connections Requires lots of power Limited mounting positions.

Decent but ihow is a mono amp 2 channel?

Pros: Sleek and powerful works like a charm and can pump some serious power.

Cons: Mono amp that is 2 channel doesn't make much sense to me and I can't find any literature saying if bridging will increase power or work at all. Don't want to risk my system to find out.

Can't beat Pioneer's quality. Using 4 gauge power/ground wire is a necessity even going for full output. Running 4 Pioneer 10" subs at 4 ohms, Sounds great, no problems most of the time, Bass heavy music "can" shut the amp off if gains and bass boost are not properly set. Built in safety feature will cut the amps power if it pulls to much current. Class D amp, so no heat problems, even with extended play. Overall, this amplifier is great value and quality.

Pros: -1 ohm stability -Power -Sound -Quality

Cons: -No 0 gauge inputs

Just got the Pioneer GM-D9601 and hooked it up to a Pioneer TS-W3002D2 sub at a 1 ohm load since its 1ohm stable and its rocking hard. Nice sound, deep bass but i cant figure out why the bass. at times. cuts off.....maybe too much power. Overall i would recommend it to anyone.

Pros: looks output

Cons: Bass cuts off at times. Maybe its just the way i have it hooked up (user error)

CEA 2006 Compliant: The Pioneer GM-D9601 mono subwoofer amplifier power ratings are measured according to the Consumer Electronics Association's CEA-2006 standards. These standards allow you to accurately compare the rated power output of all CEA-2006 compliant amplifiers, even from different brands. Manufacturers who adhere to the standards can display the CEA-2006 logo on their products and packaging. CEA-2006 Specifications:

  • Power Output:
    • 500 watts x 1 at 4Ω with <1% THD+N
    • 800 watts x 1 at 2Ω with <1% THD+N
    • 1,200 watts x 1 at 1Ω with <1% THD+N
  • Signal to Noise Ratio: 75 dBA

1Ω Stable: The GM-D9601 is capable of powering load impedances down to 1Ω.

Auto Turn-on: When using a high voltage speaker level input, a signal sensing circuit will automatically turn the amp on and off along with the source unit.

Controls

Gain Control: The gain control is continuously variable from 200 mV to 6.5 V.

Crossover: The low pass crossover is always engaged, and is continuously variable from 40 to 240 Hz.

Bass Boost: The bass boost circuit is variable from 0 to +18 dB, centered at 50 Hz. Adjustment is made using the included wired remote.

Wired Remote: The bass boost circuit is controlled using the included wired remote, which can be mounted within easy reach of the driver. The remote has integral flanges on both sides to mount the unit under the dash. The remote measures:

  • Width: 1.73" (2.63" including mounting tabs)
  • Height: 0.75"
  • Depth: 1.62" (2.2" including control knob and cable)

Connections

Power: The power and ground connections are set screw terminals that will accommodate up to 4-gauge wire. The included 3mm Allen wrench is used to tighten and loosen the terminals. Pioneer recommends different power and ground wire gauges based on the length of the wire:

  • 6-Gauge: up to 11' 10"
  • 4-Gauge: up to 21'

Remote Turn-on: The remote connection is a set screw terminal that will accommodate up to 8-gauge wire. The included 3mm Allen wrench is used to tighten and loosen the terminals.

Speaker Connections: There are two pair of speaker output set screw terminals, internally shorted together so it's easy to connect two subwoofers. The terminals will accommodate up to 8-gauge wire. The included 3mm Allen wrench is used to tighten and loosen the terminals.

Signal Input: The amplifier features one pair of stereo RCA inputs. If no line level signal is available, use the included speaker wire to RCA adapters.

RCA Output: One pair of preamp output jacks provide a convenient way to daisy-chain an additional amplifier without running another set of RCA cables from the front of the vehicle to the amplifier location. The output is not affected by the internal crossover.

I was specifically looking for an entry level amp that could give me 1200w @ 1 ohm. This and the Rockford R1200-1D fit the bill. As far as specs go the Pioneer lacks the subsonic filter, but since I will be running this amp from a Blaupunkt 470 DSP which has a subsonic filter on it's pre-out line, that feature on a mono amp was unecessary and the Pioneer saves me $50. Q
Hownare you guys wiring this amp for a single sub with dual voice coil? The owners manual shows that this amp is actually a 2 channel amp. The connections for a single sub and dual voice coil sub are not covered independantly in the manual. I see it shows to connect to the right channel for a single sub...is this correct for a DVC sub and will it combine both channels and utilize the full power of the amp?
[ CHRISTOPHER  Jul 26, 2018 ]
1 answer
A
Hello chris, this is just a 1 channel amp with 2 channel connection to make the wiring of 2 subs easier, but internally it is one single channel. So it depends on how you wanna do it. If you want the full RMS power if you have a dvc 2ohm sub, wire both positives on your sub together, then wire that into one of the positives on the amp, same thing with the negative run a wire from the one voice coil neg, to the other then a wire from that to one of the negatives on the amp. That will be 1200 RMS @ 1 ohm. I had this running my single Alpine type R 12, wired like stated and did perfectly fine. Just get on Google and type in wiring diagrams for how you would like to set your system up. Good luck to you, hope this was atleast a little helpful.

If I have 2 12inch subs DVC 4ohms with 250 rms each what is the best hook up to get 250 rms to each speaker?
[ Anthony  Apr 25, 2018 ]
1 answer

You want to wire your subs to a 4 ohm load. To do this your voice coils will be wired in series, speakers wired in parallel. So wire amp+ to subA(vc1)+ to subB (vc1)+. Then wire subA (vc1) - to subA (vc2) +. Then wire subB (vc1) - to subB (vc2) +. And last wire amp - to to subA (vc2) - to subB (vc2) -. Hope this helps! (vc)=voice coil += positive, - = negative

Im assuming the sub your mentioning is the ts-sw2502s4 (2501 same power handling). These subs handle 300w each, 600w total at a 2ohm load. Just wire amp positive to sub A positive to sub B positive. And amp negative to sub A negative to sub B negative. Word of warning this amp will put out 800+watts at 2ohm. This will be slightly more power than the subs rms rating but should be ok IF GAINS ARE PROPERLY SET. If not done so you may damage the sub.
[ KURT  May 02, 2018 ]
Q
With 2 outputs for ease of wiring can i wire each 2ohm dvc sub to 1 ohm and run wires separately to each spot on the amp and get a 1ohm final impedance or will it make it a .5ohm impedance?
[ Jo828  Apr 10, 2018 ]
4 answers
A
It's the same as having one speaker. It will not drop it.
[ armando  Sep 20, 2018 ]
A
It will make it a .5 ohm impedance the two separate outputs are wired in parallel internally it is just like you only have one output but two spots for your convenience for wiring only.
[ Mark  Apr 29, 2018 ]
A
Wiring two dual voice-coil 2-ohm subs in that manner would present a 0.5-ohm load to the amp which is not recommended for the Pioneer GM-D9601 (minimum impedance is 1-ohm). For more help on selecting the right amp for your sub(s), please contact an Advisor directly by phone (888.955.6000) or online chat; they can help give you a more personalized recommendation suited to your system specs & budget. Thanks!

Check the specs on this amp and then go on the internet for a car wiring diagram. One thing I know is, the more ohms one runs, the better the sound. Check to see if this is one ohm stable, but don't go below one ohm. In fact I would go with 2 or 4 ohms. Subs sound better with higher resistance.

[ Jody  Mar 08, 2018 ]

Sorry for a way late answer. I'm not sure if it will work you have a soeaker that is not made for that amp. If you wanted to use that you would have to get a second one and wire both. And in doing so I believe you will only get 800watts at 4ohms. I think its possible to do one at 2ohms but you will only get an out put of 500watts from this amp
[ armando  Sep 20, 2018 ]
A
This speaker has two 2 ohm voice coils. U can wire it in series to achieve 1 ohm or parallel to achieve 4. This amp can handle 1 ohm operation and in my opinion, is more responsive (punchy). I doubt this subwoofer could handle a full 1200 watts by itself for very long though. Wiring in series is when you connect the positive side of each voice coil to the negative side of the other voice coil and run your speaker wires off of on voice coil to the amp. Wiring parallel is when you wire positive to positive and negative to negative. You typically see people run each voice coil to the sub terminal on the box. Hope this helps!

So there are two speaker outputs, does that means if I run one sub to one output and another to the other, both at 4 ohm, I'll get 500 watts each speaker? Or is it cut in half!?

At 4 ohms you will get roughly 4 to 5 hundred. At 2 ohms youll get roughly 7 to 8 and at a full 1 ohm load youll get roughly a 1000. Obviously if it wasnt bench test certified you wont know what your truely pushing.

I have been using this amp for over a year and never had a problem with overheating, the bass switch works just fine for me.
[ Gage  Mar 10, 2017 ]
A
i had this amp before upgrading my amp and subs. I can say this little monster can handle what you dish to it. you can have that amp bass gain knob full tilt and the bass gain on 7 8 or 9 and you wont cook the amp at 2 ohms... at 1 ohm all bets are off most amps after continuous beating at 1 ohm will fry. but the amp is nice. I have it powering 4 8 inch subs and my Rockford fosgate are running my 4 12s at 2 ohm all full gain on the bass boost knob and 9 on the gain and stable and no clipping.
[ BERNARD  Mar 10, 2017 ]
A
IMHO: the boost remote is intended for music that is not natively bass heavy to start with. that is how I use it, have no problems. Whether it can fry the amp, I never heard of that before, but anything is possible if an amp is not properly adjusted to start with and they are playing very bass heavy music with the boost up full.
[ Geoffrey  Mar 10, 2017 ]
A
Honestly I have this amp for about a year and I have no problem with it using the remote. So far the best amp I have in long time with no prblem. Moving 4 10 jvl

Can I get 1200 watts x 2 out of this amp?
[ FRANCISCO A  Nov 21, 2016 ]

no, it is a 1 channel amp. It is designed for driving sub woofers. The amp needs a 1 ohm load for that rating.
[ Geoffrey  Nov 22, 2016 ]
A
No. It's a 1200 watt RMS single channel
[ Jason  Nov 22, 2016 ]
A
Only way your gonna get 1200 RMS from that amp is at 1 ohm which with the design at 4 ohms you get 400 watts 2 ohms you get 800 watts and 1ohm you will get 1200 watts. But thats a rough calculation

How would I wire two Kicker 40CWR124 12" subwoofers too my Pioneer GM-D9601 amplifier at 1 ohm to these Subs? Also should I get the 2ohm DVC or 4ohm DVC to do this?
[ Austin  Jan 14, 2016 ]

A
to drop your subs to 1 ohm you have to buy a 3rd sub which is 4 ohm and run the speakera in parallel. with 3 subs it starts at 4 ohms and splits to 2 subs at 2 ohms and then adding the 3rd sub would split the 2 ohm load to 1 ohm stable. but with 4 ohm voice coils the best you will get with a pair is 2 ohm.
[ BERNARD  May 26, 2016 ]
A
I'm not sure that you can. As typically, the speakers ohm rating has to match that of the amp. But I could be wrong.

I had a 1700 watt hifoniks Brutus with my old truck an that had 2 shallow mount 12's alpine type Rs an probably my favorite I've had so far for shallow subs

Q
What are the speaker level inputs via supplied rca type adapters that is says is included?
[ Devin  Aug 07, 2015 ]
1 answer
A
The RCA plugs ends that came included. You can wire speaker wires to them, and plug them to the RCA inputs. The amp accepts high level and low lever inputs at the same place, and automatically determines what level is being used, and adjusts accordingly.

i have 3 12 inch kicker comp r subs and that amp and it pounded the heck out of my car

For this application I suggest infinity kappa 10s. I have one running off this amp and I have all settings turned all the way down and it shakes my truck.

This is my understanding - If you are running qty(3) subs in parallel @ 1ohm, each sub will only see 400w. I don't know what wiring setup would give you 1ohm without imbalance. If you wire qty(2) 4ohm subs in parallel, it gives you 2ohms. Then you could run wires from that pair to the amp along with a single 2ohm sub, which would give you 1ohm load to the amp BUT THAT WILL NOT PRESENT AN EVEN POWER DISTRIBUTION TO ALL THREE SPEAKERS. NOT RECOMMENDED. Qty(3) 4ohm speakers in parallel with even power distribution = 1.33ohm load to the amp. This is balanced, and doesn't take the amp to its limit. This is not a huge amount of power for each driver, so you could use just about any good sub - it doesn't have to be a monster. Kicker Comp VR's will run all day long with that amount of power. There's no replacement for displacement - get the biggest subs that your available space will allow. But don't put big 15' subs in a box that's too small to support their internal volume recommendation. If you think you might reconfigure down the road, you could step up to Kicker Comp R, which handle twice the power of the Comp VR (but cost ~$50 more per driver)!

How hot does this amp get?
[ Cody  Dec 19, 2013 ]

Short answer is, it doesn't. I have mine wired at 1 ohm load in my boat running 2 Alpine type R 12's. It's in the engine compartment of my boat, and I have played it non stop for 8 hours without any problems whatsoever.

Mine is located in the top of my sub box in the trunk of my car. The amp doesn't get very hot that I've noticed even during the heat wave we experienced of 105 heat index. I own an 08 impala so the trunk space is large and therfore dissipates the heat well if it were to get warm. I run it at 2 ohms.
[ JOHN A  Jan 05, 2014 ]

not very hot at all. my setup is at 1-ohm and unless I am really pounding away, the amp hardly heats up at all. when it does heat up it does not even come close to what I would call "hot" or reach a level to be concerned about. it's a great amp for the money!

since i bought this pioneer gm d9601 it's been great never overheated never shut off its a real good amp
