Cool power

Pioneer's sharp-looking GM-D9605 5-channel amplifier can power your entire car audio system, sending 75 watts RMS to each of your front and rear speakers while delivering up to 600 watts RMS to your sub. Highly efficient Class D technology keeps this powerful amp running as cool as it looks, and allows for a compact chassis that fits in a lot of out-of-the-way spaces.

You can also create a strong front soundstage with bass by putting the GM-D9605 into 3-channel mode, sending 200 watts RMS each to a set of components up front, for example, plus 600 watts to a sub.

Connecting and tuning made simple

If your car stereo doesn't have RCA outputs, you can use the speaker-level inputs to hook this amp directly into your system. The amplifier switches on automatically when it detects the high-level input signal, eliminating the need to run a turn-on lead to your receiver. And the built-in high- and low-pass filters let you adjust the sound for your car's interior.

Worked for a few days, red light showed up (completely open air, nothing covering it) and then it started shutting down after 5 minutes. Gain was set per manufacturers requirements as I was using a 4V pre-out Pioneer head unit. This thing cannot handle heat. Look it up on YouTube, this amp gets much hotter than others in its class

This was recommended by the Crurchfield technician to power a pioneer TS-SW2502S2 subwoofer in a pioneer UD-SW250T subwoofer box along with kicker 6x9's and kicker 6.75's in a 2017 Toyota Tacoma DCSB. This amp works perfectly powering all these speakers. I keep the bass knob at just over half and that's plenty for my needs. The first amp had a defective subwoofer output but I contact Crutchfield and they were great to deal with, absolutely no hassles returning the amp. The person I spoke with expedited a new amp to me and sent an email with a return label for the defective amp.

Pros: Plenty of power

Cons: None

Great Amp

This amp was extremely easy to set up. Very simple set up but enough features to fine tune sound. The ONLY reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because of the allen screws that secure the speaker out cables. They are extremely small and seem kind of flimsy.

Outstanding Amplifier

Bill from Florida on 7/10/2018

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Outstanding amplifier. Plenty of clean power. Solid, robust bass response, clear mids and highs. I was concerned about other reviews here and elsewhere claiming the amp had a problem with noise, and I even posted that question prior to purchase. I can verify this amp is dead quiet, no noise whatsoever. It was professionally installed. 2017 Hyundai Sonata Sport using the factory head unit, an AudioControl DQ-61, Focal ISS 165 front, Focal ISC165 rear and JL Audio CS112RG-W3V3. For the price, you can't go wrong.

Pros: Clean power, flexible setting options, good form factor, great price

One and Done!

Alex from San Antonio, TX on 5/21/2018

For such a small package this amp is nothing short of impressive. I have mine installed under the passenger seat of my 2013 Tacoma on a sheet of ABS plastic I cut and molded. It's powering 2 JL Audio 6.5's, 2 JL Audio 6.5 components, and a 10" Kicker sub. The amp runs cool and can easily run everything at full volume - not that I do that. I am very happy with this amp overall. I like it's size, features, it runs cool, the remote bass knob is great when you want more or less bass on the fly, it was very easy to set up, and I have not had any issues with the audio cables or the allen screws that secure them. If you want one single amp to power everything, look no further!

Pros: One amp to power everything Easy set up Easy tuning Remote bass knob Runs cool

Cons: None so far.

Very impressive

David from Vancouver, WA on 5/1/2018

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I am very impressed with this amp. It's powering Morel 6.5s up front, 2 eclipse point source 6x9s that are close to 20 years old, and a fosgate P2 12" in a ported box running at 2 ohms...all in a Ford Transit connect. Gains are set at about 50% on the fronts and rears and roughly 65% in the sub. I'm running the factory deck using the speaker wires (high input) instead of RCA cables. No need for a remote wire, the amp senses signal through the speaker wires and kicks on automatically. The sound is nothing short of incredible. I can't imagine another amp for this price that would keep up! Buy it!

Pros: Compact, powerful, great sound, option for running off factory deck without RCA outputs, runs cool

Cons: Yes, the speaker terminals are a pain to get wired after the amp is installed

Very good sound

Don from Truckee, CA on 4/17/2018

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I really like the sound that this amp puts out. I am still working with the adjustments to fine tune it but so far so good. I would give it 5 stars except the wiring connections for the speaker wires could be better. I ran new 14 gauge wire in my Jeep Wrangler and the wire ends barely fit in the lugs. The hex wrench that is included is junk. It twists like a pretzel when used to tighten the lugs. I installed all new component, coax, and sub speakers and it sounds great. I would recommend this amp but get a better hex wrench that fits the lugs before you do the install.

Pros: Installs pretty easily, provides good bass.

Cons: Speaker wire lugs could be better and they need to include a much stronger hex wrench for tightening them.

The white noise generated by this amp is horrible with the gains all the way down. The amp is fed with differential balanced inputs and looking at the rca inputs on an o-scope shows the noise is generated by the amp.

I would give it 5 stars but like everything it's not perfect. Like most others have complained, the connections for the speaker wire and power/ground cable suck. But other than that it puts out pretty good sound. I'm not to sure if it's my amp or my complete setup but I get a hint of engine noise. But other than that it's good for the price.

Pros: Price, sound quality

Cons: Speaker wire and power/ ground cable Terminal designs

Put it in a 2005 Jeep Wrangler with Polk speakers and a Kicker 10 inch sub. 65 mph down the interstate with windows down and speakers are still clear as a bell. I really like this amp. The install was super easy and the sound is really clean. The only reason I gave it four stars is that several months after the install it developed static in the A channel. I use it with a Pioneer 4200 NEX and Polk speakers in a Jeep Wrangler and I have more power than I can use. I am sending the amp in for repair and hoping for the best.

Pros: Nice to have HPF/LPF, separate gains, freq over A, B and Sub channels no bleed through

Cons: It's bigger than I thought it would be. May not fit too well under some seats

Awesome amp, small foot print. Powers two 6 1/2"s, two 6x9's, 2 1" tweeters, and a 10" sub. Plenty of power and nothing but compliments from everyone who listens to my setup. Only reason for a 4 star rating is because I haven't spent a huge amount of time tweaking it, but I'm confident it could make the 5 star.

This amp is good bang for buck. Right now I have it running 4 channels; a set of Sony components up front and a set of RF PPS4-6 mid-bass in the rear. Sounds awesome after tuning the crossovers. The amp stays fairly cool. I purchased a 10" sub RF P3D4-10, but it have not hooked it up yet, so no comment on the SW channel. I will edit this review after adding the sub. Great amp for the price. Oh yeah, the tiny screws for the speaker wire are a pain, but no biggie for me.

Pros: Price; Good Power

Cons: Tiny hex screws for speaker wire.

Installed straight out of box. Along with a kicker front row. Very happy with this amp. Plays louder then I can stand and have adjusted nothing on it. The allen screws are a little frustrating and I have 12 wire already ran which was a pain to fit in to amp. Had a loud pip at shut off which I fixxed with an inline switch . Just turn off amp then key. Not a big deal to me. Great amp.

Sucks to install. These itty bitty allen heads absolutely suck to work with. What does Pioneer think they're doing? Think it's a Rolex watch or a girl's doll house? Infuriating since wire comes loose consistently.

I purchased this amplifier for my 2015 F-150 SuperCrew to push a little more power to my Kicker door speakers and Rockford Fosgate subwoofer thanks to a Crutchfield advisor. The biggest appeal to me was having speaker level inputs so a line output converter wouldn't be needed. Sure enough, this thing pushes plenty of power where it needs to at a very reasonable price. If there is a downside, it's the installation manual which is less than helpful. Good thing there's always Crutchfield tech support!

Pros: Speaker level inputs, easy installation, low heat emission for tucked away installation.

Cons: Installation manual.

Very Happy! Great for Budget 5 Channel Amp

Very impressed with this amp. This was for my 16yr old sons car, who listens mostly to rock and metal. The amp was easy to understand, and I think we got it dialed in pretty well. We set it up to run 2 coax Kicker 5.25's in the front, and 2 three-way 6x9 Pioneers in the back deck. We also added a Kicker sub box with 2 -12's in the trunk. It is LOUD! I can't imagine wanting anything louder. We never got past 35 (out of possible 50) on the H/U, and it did not distort. I did NOT like the hex screws for the speakers. They hold OK, but we had a few of them pop out and have to do them again. The power cable and ground held better, maybe because they were 4 gauge. But, the power cable did pop out once while we were working with mounting it. I feel that there could be a much better way to connect those wires.

Pros: Sounds great. Loud! Easy to set gains and crossovers.

Cons: Hex screws don't hold wires as well as some other connectors.

I just installed a complete system in my 98 Vette with this amp providing the power. I have jbl 6.5's at the front and middle and an old Memphis 10" sub. I'm sure I don't have it dialed me in yet, but I am very happy with the sound right now!

Powers my 4 JL c2650x coaxials nicely. Also slams my kicker 43cwrt. The 4 channel speaker terminal Allen set screws are too small and strip easily. That's why 4 stars not 5

Pros: Grear rms power for a 5 channel amp.

Cons: 4 mini Allen set screws are a joke. No issue with sub Allen screws

I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 since three of the speaker output screws are stripped and won't tighten very well. Cruthfield has issued an RMA an I'm expecting the replacement soon. Thus far though it sounds good.

Pros: Good power and audio for relatively low cost.

Cons: Large box Stripped speaker connection screws

The amp is alright. Nothing like a alpine amp. I am using a 11 year old alpine mrvf450 5 ch and it just lacks power to drive my sub and my new door speakers effectively to make me happy. So i was in search for a new amp. i found the pioneer . i read reviews of white noise when the stereo is on and no music was playing. No big deal. i seldom ever have a quiet radio. so that was not a deal breaker for me. I run a real nice setup. Monster cable power wires a alpine equalizer kenwood indash dvd/NAV unit Polk components nothing cheap! I installed this pioneer... i was so disappointed within 20 seconds it was the most disappointment since my ex girlfriend. alternator noise... Lots of alternator noise... Last time i had that is when i tried to buy a legacy product and it introduced that sound into my system. I sure didn't have alternator noise with ,my alpine amp. soon as i installed this pioneer so much alternator noise.... my grounds are fine. my wiring is proper. My alpine is quiet as a mouse this pioneer hurts my ears. I love their elite line home theater systems BUT this is garbage regardless lets say this amp is going back. It seems to be lacking any filters in the amp vs my other amps i have owned in the past

Pros: small. looks good

Cons: Cheap junk. lack of Any quality control. Lack of filtering. Causes alternator noises. just a lousy amp.

So far so good! Installed this under the passenger seat of a 2016 Pilot with the 10 speaker system. Retained the center channel on the factory amp for GPS commands and gutted the rest in favor of CDT speakers and a Kicker sub. Sounds so much better than stock!! Simple set up and it's ready to go!

Pros: Size Price Power

Cons: Novice buyers better have a 1.5mm Allen for the amp set screws!

Features

CEA 2006 Compliant: The Pioneer GM-D9605 5-channel amplifier power ratings are measured according to the Consumer Electronics Association's CEA-2006 standards. These standards allow you to accurately compare the rated power output of all CEA-2006 compliant amplifiers, even from different brands. Manufacturers who adhere to the standards can display the CEA-2006 logo on their products and packaging. The amp has the following specifications:

  • Power Output:
    • 75 watts x 4 + 350 watts x 1 at 4Ω (with 1% THD+N)
    • 100 watts x 4 + 600 watts x 1 at 2Ω
    • 200 watts x 2 + 350 watts x 1 at 4Ω bridged
  • Signal to Noise Ratio: 75 dBA

Class-FD Amp: A Class-D amplifier offers higher power in a smaller chassis than conventional Class-AB amp designs. Pioneer's exclusive Class-FD design not only delivers full-range Class-D amplification, but is more efficient than other designs. The result is clear full-range sound in a small amplifier. The ultra-compact design provides many installation options.

Channel Layout: The GM-D9605 is a 5-channel amplifier. The channels are labeled A (left and right), B (left and right), and SW (subwoofer). The left and right channels of both A and B can be bridged with an output of 200 watts (at 4Ω) for each, plus 350 watts for the SW channel.

Auto Turn-on: When using a high voltage speaker level input, a signal sensing circuit will automatically turn the amp on and off along with the source unit. This prevents the need for running a system remote control wire (turn-on lead).

Controls

Input Select Switches: The amplifier has two input select switches that allow you to choose the preferred input mode. For the A and B channels, the 4-channel mode requires that two pair of RCA inputs be connected to the amplifier's A and B inputs, while the 2-channel mode only requires one pair connected to the A inputs. If you have a separate RCA input for the SW channel, the SW Input Select should be in the SW position. If you do not have a separate SW input, the switch should be in the A/B position, and the SW channel will receive a signal from the A/B input.

Gain Control: There are independent gain controls for the A, B, and SW amplifier sections, each is continuously variable from 200 mV to 6.5 V. When you use the speaker level input, the gain control ranges from 0.8V and 16V.

Crossovers: The A, B, and SW sections also have independent crossover controls. The A and B channels have crossovers that can be configured for Low Pass, High Pass, or Off (Full Range). The rotary frequency controls let you set the crossover point between 40Hz and 500Hz. The SW channel has a low-pass filter with a variable crossover frequency between 40Hz and 500Hz. You can choose a crossover slope of 12dB/octave or 24dB/octave via a 2-way switch.

Remote Bass Boost Control: The included Remote Bass Boost control module lets you adjust the amount of bass (from the subwoofer channel) from the front of the vehicle. The Bass Boost circuit is centered at 50Hz, with a variable boost level of 0 to 18dB. Module dimensions: 1-3/4"W (2-5/8" w/mounting tabs) x 11/16"H x 2" (including knob).

Connections

Power: The power and ground connections are set screw terminals that will accommodate up to 4-gauge wire. The included 3mm Allen wrench is used to tighten and loosen the terminals. Pioneer recommends different power and ground wire gauges based on the length of the wire:

  • 8-Gauge: up to 7' 3"
  • 6-Gauge: up to 11' 10"
  • 4-Gauge: up to 21'
Note: The amplifier has three 30A fuses installed. A 4-gauge amplifier wiring kit is recommended with a 90A fuse installed within 18" of the battery.

Remote Turn-on: The remote connection is a set screw terminal that will accommodate up to 8-gauge wire. The included 3mm Allen wrench is used to tighten and loosen the terminals.

Speaker Connections: The speaker output screw terminals for the A and B channels and the SW channel are of different sizes. The terminals for the A and B channels will accept up to 16-gauge speaker wire, while the terminals for the SW channel will accept up to 8-gauge wire. The set screws can be tightened/loosened with the included 3mm and 1.5mm Allen wrenches.

Signal Input: The amplifier features three pairs of stereo RCA inputs for Channels A, B, and SW. If no line level signal is available, use the included speaker level input harness, and splice the speaker wires from the source unit to the harness.

I wood to make your battery last longer.. It is a small amp but with big power. It would blow those two 10 if you are not careful. So just invest in the capacitor.

I thought I might with a single 2-ohm 10 inch sub with this amp but wound up not installing one and I haven't had any voltage issues so far. It depends on your car, battery, alternator and other things you are powering in your vehicle. If you are already pushing it with voltage availability, I would consider adding a capacitor for that clean power to the amp when you're listening to music.

I have a little bit of noise with this amp, but I am running it in a Jeep Wrangler so the cabin noise masks it. But if I am listening in a quiet area, I can hear a little bit of noise between tracks. I wouldn't call it an issue; I expect it with amplifiers in this mobile audio price range.

[ Jeremy  Dec 29, 2016 ]

The Pioneer GM-D9605 has a 90amp fuse rating so you'll want your primary power line fuse for this amp to be at least 90amps or slightly higher. We recommend using 4 gauge power/ground cables for this amp. I hope that helps! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5

If I buy this amp... can I bridge it to just two kicker 2064CWD82 subs and not hook anything to the sub channel just yet or should the sub channel also be used?
[ daddy  Sep 13, 2016 ]
1 answer
A
Yes, the left and right channels of both A and B on the Pioneer GM-D9605 can be bridged with an output of 200 watts RMS (at 4-ohm) x 2-channels. You don't *have* to connect anything to the subwoofer channel; but you may find a more suitable 4-channel amp to power your Kicker subs if you aren't going to add a sub to the 5th channel. If you would like to discuss your options further, feel free contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. I hope that helps!
