Our take on the Pioneer MVH-S512BS

Sure, smartphone integration is a priority, but so is dash integration. Pioneer prioritizes style with their MVH-S512BT digital media receiver by letting you choose from over 200,000 display colors to match your vehicle's interior. Getting to what matters most is easy as well, thanks to large buttons that launch navigation, hands-free calling, and music streaming. Beyond Bluetooth®, you'll be able to play stored music from an iPhone® or iPod®, select Android phones, or a USB thumb drive. And if you're a satellite radio fan, add on an optional SiriusXM tuner to expand your station list (way) beyond standard AM/FM.

Plenty of options

Pioneer Smart Sync

With Pioneer's Smart Sync app downloaded on your iPhone or Android, you'll be able to use your phone's touchscreen as an easy interface to play music, conduct hands-free calls, use navigation, and even give you 31 bands of EQ. Alternatively, the MVH-S512BT gives you dedicated buttons to access navigation on your phone and hands-free calling as well as a multi-function knob for text message playback, music selection and more. Pioneer also builds voice-control into Smart Sync to make hands-free operation even easier.

Apple® device control

With iPod and iPhone Direct Control, you can plug your device into the receiver's USB port and make music selections through the receiver. Plus, the MVH-S512BT will also charge your device while you're playing your music.

Sweet Android perks

Android users can take their choice between controlling their music via Bluetooth or plugging into the front panel USB port and playing music while getting a 1.5-amp quick charge.

Opt for SiriusXM

Add on a SiriusXM tuner for tons of satellite radio programming that won't fade no matter how far you travel. No matter what your thing is — entertainment, sports, news, and commercial-free music — you'll find no shortage of options.

Other sources

You can also plug in a thumb drive and enjoy MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV, and high-resolution FLAC files, or use the aux input to connect an MP3 player or portable satellite radio. And with Pioneer's integrated MIXTRAX virtual DJ technology, your music collection becomes a non-stop playlist, with enhanced transitions and lighting. And, of course, you can also tune in your favorite local AM and FM stations.

Make the most of Pandora and Spotify

Whether you primarily stream songs from Spotify or Pandora, you'll gain some of your favorite functionality from those streaming services through this receiver.

Expand your system

Get the best sound possible from your music, including time alignment and a 13-band graphic equalizer. Three sets of 4-volt preamp outputs equip you to make it easier to add amplifiers and subs to your system. Download Pioneer's Smart Sync and you'll gain even more sound adjustment tools. And if you need a quick Bass Boost for those special tracks, Pioneer puts a dedicated button right by the volume knob.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an amazing radio for the price. It took me awhile to figure out how to setup all the features that I wanted. The quick setup instructions that came with the radio were pretty much useless. You really need to download the users manual which is quite long. The sound is very good, I have good speakers. The installation was very easy and came with everything I needed and looks real good.

Pros: This is a great radio with many features, and a really good price.

Cons: The manual could be better organized, it jumps around. Forty-five pages is too long.

    Great unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fantastic value. I do not own a single CD so why have a CD player? This unit is compact, so the wiring isn't getting scrunched. The sound is great and so is the app interface. This unit went into a Mercedes SL500 and I thought that wiring through the factory amp was going to be hard, but the harness that Crutchfied provided made it a breeze! It's nice to finally have bluetooth in a 20 year old car!

Pros: Design, look, app, UI of app

    Cons: menus on the unit

Clear, flexible, and Smart Single DIN

    2001 Mazda Miata
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Clean sounding single DIN headunit with smart capabilities. I was looking for a single DIN specifically and wanted one that wasn't too flashy. This fit these perfectly. The Smart Sync phone app makes configuring the (already easy to configure) headunit even easier and adjusting the EQ settings on the phone couldn't be simpler. The nearly infinite number of colors it can be changed to is also great. It allowed me to match it to the rest of my interior perfectly, but I know it's not a feature I'll ever need to touch again. I've been very happy with it over the last couple of weeks and would definitely get it again if needed.

Pros: Clean sound Flexible options Smart Sync phone app

Cons: None that I can find

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice deck in a small package. Display is plenty bright, installation is a breeze as it's easily at least 75% smaller than CD single din receivers. Menu is a bit difficult to understand, and the buttons not as intuitive as I would prefer (which is common in aftermarket decks of any brand). Biggest complaint is I simply cannot get it to play nice with the app on an iPhone X, which is really disappointing as that would make setup easier. Overall well worth the price, but if you had the money I'd probably look at something a bit more sophisticated

    Pros: Size, sound, display

Cons: App doesn't work with iPhone X, menus are confusing

Awesome unit! For the negative reviews on not being able to see the screen they obviously did not download the app! You access all settings through this app! Amazing what you can do with the unit through the app! Easy install with all that Crutchfield gives you! Don't hesitate on this one.

Pros: Sounds setting galore through app!

    Cons: Non at all!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

To put all this in perspective: I have a pioneer CD head unit in my 1994 F350 dually I installed back in 2003 that is still working flawlessly. Which brings me to this head unit. Easy install, wow the units have gotten smaller since back in the day! Great functionality, tons of options, has the sound processing I wanted for a bass-heavy set-up in my vehicle (it's a 2002 Chevy Silverado and will be my son's truck when he gets his license so he wanted to buy his stuff now and get his system set up). Worked GREAT!!! For 4 weeks. Then the UP radio scan button failed. Ah well, I can live with it. Then the main knob push control failed- which allows you to access all menus. At that point it's a worthless paperweight. Sad- I had switched to Alpine many years ago but came back to Pioneer because it had the sound processing capabilities I wanted to make the system sound the way we wanted. And it dies in a month. My old Pioneer unit survived Katrina for crying out loud. The good news is, I have a pound of tannerite left over from Christmas where we had some shooting fun and I'll use it to send this unit where it belongs- to electronics heaven. I'll try to post some pics when we're done.

Pros: Sound processing Tons of options Multicolor display Great sound Ease of installation Great Crutchfield Service

    Cons: Quality control

    2003 Honda S2000
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit to replace my aging Pioneer Premier head unit that was having bluetooth connection issues. I figured the technology of the connections to smartphones have changed over the years and I should probably just bite the bullet and upgrade.. The cost has come down considerably over the past decade. I think I paid over $400 for my old one with the bluetooth adapter (because it wasn't built in). I was concerned that a replacement was only $100. How can it be as good? It is. The app makes it easy to adjust settings and the sound quality is just as good as my old one. Best of all, I was able to retain my previously installed steering wheel control adapter, since Pioneer hasn't changed that portion of their stereos. It made for a quick install.

Pros: Ease of use and installation, Good looks, Great sound quality

Cons: The rotary knob doesn't feel quite as nice as my old one, but that certainly isn't much of a con.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For a budget priced head unit it works amazingly well. Onboard menus can be difficult to manage - using the phone app bypasses these menus and is very easy to use. A very broad color pallet to chose from should make it possible to match any interior. One annoying thing the unit does is after answering a phone call it does not go back to the source of music you were playing, it starts playing your iTunes music, in alpha order. Exception is the radio.

Pros: "Clean" looking face. Phone app makes settings easy to access Very wide color selection

Cons: Onboard menus difficult to navigate Curved face can make the display difficult to read due to reflections Does not return to original music source after phone call

The unit had all the pioneer basics but does not seem to have an option to reduce the high pass for a fuller midrange with out getting into a custom setting and adjusting every frequency option. I would have given this unit 5 stars if it had that capacity, a home button and remote. Great headu it for the money.

Overall, it is a really good product. It is small, light, and compact for something this capable. The list of features makes it great deal for the money and very customizable. The smart phone app could really use some work but it isn't necessary to get the full enjoyment of the stereo. I wasn't sure what to expect from this stereo but I'm glad I made the purchase and crutchfield makes it a painless process.

This radio is perfect. Bluetooth streaming works seamlessly, sound quality and features are great, menus are easy to figure out and navigate. The only thing I didn't like is the phone app that is offered for this radio, it's kind of garbage, but for what I needed which is Bluetooth audio streaming and hands free calling, the radio itself does that perfectly without the app.

Pros: Sound quality is amazing Color options for buttons/screen Bluetooth streaming quality

Cons: The phone app for the radio could use A LOT of improvement, but isn't needed for most used features.

Sound quality from this receiver is nice. Built in equalizer and crossover enable you to fine to the sound you want, and I notice a massive difference in power from my amps because of the 4v pre amp outputs.

Pros: Powerful, economical, multi-functional, Bluetooth works great, clean design.

Cons: Takes some time to navigate through settings.....may be adjusting crossover, eq, fade.

    Pros: 100% mad

The unit's front and rear preamp output can be faded (front/rear), while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The MVH-S512BS lets you adjust the subwoofer preamp output's phase (normal/reverse) and volume (+10 to -24).

Crossovers: The MVH-S512BS employs high-pass and low-pass crossovers to tailor the head unit to your connected speaker setup.

    • Standard: Allows you to set the high-pass and low-pass crossover network for a standard Front, Rear, and Subwoofer speaker setup using either speaker-level or low-level outputs.
      • HPF: The head unit's -6, -12, -18, or -24dB/octave high pass filter only allows frequencies higher than those in the selected range (25, 31.5, 40, 50, 63, 80, 100, 125, 160, 200, or 220Hz) to your front and rear speakers through the unit's speaker-level or line-level outputs.
      • LPF: The subwoofer preamp output features an -6, 12, -18, -24, -30, or -36dB/octave low pass filter so only frequencies lower than those in the selected range (25, 31.5, 40, 50, 63, 80, 100, 125, 160, 200, or 220Hz) are output to your connected subwoofer.
    • Network: Allows you to set the high-pass and low-pass crossover network for a complex 3-way speaker system with Highs, Mids, and Sub using low-level outputs only.
      • Highs: The high-pass crossover for your tweeters can be set to 1.25, 1.6, 2, 2.5, 3.15, 4, 5, 6.3, 8, 10, or 12.5 kHz with a -6, -12, -18, or -24 dB/octave roll-off.
      • Mids: You can set a high-pass and low-pass crossover from your midrange/midbass drivers. The high-pass crossover can be set to 1.25, 1.6, 2, 2.5, 3.15, 4, 5, 6.3, 8, 10, or 12.5 kHz with a -6 to -36dB/octave roll-off. The low-pass crossover can be set to 25, 31.5, 40, 50, 63, 80, 100, 125, 160, 200, or 250 Hz with a -6, -12, -18, or -24 dB/octave roll-off.
      • Lows: The low-pass crossover for your subwoofers can be set to 25, 31.5, 40, 50, 63, 80, 100, 125, 160, 200, or 250 Hz with a -6 to --6, -12, -18, -24, -30, or -36dB/octave roll-off.

EEQ (Easy EQ) w/ 13-Band Graphic EQ: There are seven stored equalizer curves which you can easily recall at any time. You can choose from - Powerful, Natural, Vocal, Super Bass, Flat, Custom 1, or Custom 2. The Custom 1 and Custom 2 EQ modes allow you to manually adjust the level (+/- 12dB) of each band of the head unit's 13-band graphic equalizer (50, 80, 125, 200, 315, 500, 800, 1.25k, 2k, 3.15k, 5k, 8k, and 12.5k Hz).

Auto-Calibration Microphone: The optional CD-MC20 auto-calibration microphone (130CDMC20, sold separately) automatically measures your vehicle's interior acoustic characteristics and the distance between each speakers and the driver's seat. Based on these measurements, the MVH-S512BS creates an auto-equalizer curves and adjusts the time alignment for better sound quality inside your vehicle. The auto-calibration microphone plugs into the head unit's front-panel Aux input and should be placed in the center of your vehicle's driver seat headrest facing forward during setup.

Listening Position, Time Alignment, & Speaker Level Adjustment: For a better sound-stage you can select your optimal listening position. You can choose from All, Front Left, Front Right, or Front. You can also select to manually fine tune the sound stage, using Digital Time Alignment (DTA) by selecting the distance (0-140") for each individual speaker in the vehicle compared to your listening position. You can then adjust each speaker and sub channel independently from -24 to +10 to best even out the sound in your vehicle.

Bass Management: The Pioneer receiver offers Bass Management through its D.Bass and Loudness feature. D.Bass boosts the bas level dynamically to offer an effect as if a subwoofer was added to the system. D.Bass can be set to High, Low, or Off. The Loudness function compensates for deficiencies in the low- and high-frequency ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness to High, Mid, Low, or Off.

Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. When the Advanced Sound Retriever is on, the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve to the original sound. There are two available levels of the Advanced Sound Retriever effect.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the unit's FM volume level, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4 dB to +4 dB.

Rear Speaker Setup: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

MIXTRAX: Drawing from Pioneer's rich DJ heritage and passion for music, MIXTRAX delivers a unique DJ infused listening experience to listeners in the car. MIXTRAX is an innovative Pioneer technology that creates a non-stop mix of your music library complete with a range of DJ-inspired effects. MIXTRAX takes your typical music listening experience and creates a non-stop mix of your music with 3 random DJ effects and transitions, by removing the breaks and pauses normally introduced between tracks and replacing them with various beats. MIXTRAX is compatible with USB-connected iPhone & USB MSC devices. There is also a Short Playback option which limits the amount of time each track plays; select from 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, or 3 minutes.

Note: The MIXTRAX function is not compatible with Android or the Pandora app.

    • MIXTRAX Illumination: MIXTRAX features a club-style illumination that enhances the mood with a dynamic dance club-like lighting effect. As MIXTRAX begins, lights start pulsing to the beat of the music, adding an extra level of entertainment. You can choose different patterns of lighting variations from sound pressure level or low-pass synchronization modes. The lighting effects work like a spectrum analyzer, reaching peak colors based on the intensity of the music.

pioneer simply suits my audio taste better than Alpine,or Kenwood. I've tried both then went with pioneer [ William  Feb 23, 2019 ]
I have always been a big fan of pioneer and their products. I choose this unit because it doesn't generate heat, Doesn't have a CD player. I like most use media apps for music entertainment, Why pay extra for something you won't use. [ Shawn  Feb 22, 2019 ]
