About the Pioneer DEH-P3100UB

Why settle for a stripped-down CD receiver when you can enjoy the features and performance of Pioneer's DEH-P3100UB? For a surprisingly modest price, you'll outfit your car to handle a wide range of media and music players, plus improve the sound quality so you can really enjoy what you're listening to.

What do you want to listen to? Play your regular store-bought and burned CDs, plus discs loaded with MP3, WMA, and AAC files, or connect your iPod® to the front-panel USB and control your playlists right from the receiver's controls. When your iPod is connected to the USB input, the receiver bypasses your iPod's built-in digital-to-analog converter, using its high-quality DAC to deliver your music files with the highest fidelity possible. For more add-on options, plug into the front-panel auxiliary input, or connect a thumb drive to the USB input.

Options abound
You can add an HD Radio® tuner for free high-fidelity radio, or connect a satellite radio tuner for a wide variety of outstanding music, news, sports, and talk programming. Connect a Bluetooth® adapter for hands-free calling with your compatible cell phone. Still like spinning your shiny discs? Add a multi-CD changer and take your favorites on the road.

Great sound
Now consider performance. Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever (ASR) brings flat-sounding music files back to life — restoring details, depth, and ambiance lost when your favorite tracks are compressed. Tweak the tonal balance with the 3-band equalizer — select the frequencies you want to adjust, then boost or attenuate them until your music sounds just right in your car.

Amplified system
Considering adding an amp or two to your system? Two sets of preamp outputs make it easy, and you can even set one pair to a subwoofer mode so you can dial in the right amount of bass from the driver's seat.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

    mp3 playback issues

DLK from Huntsville, AL on 8/25/2010

    Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This unit replaced a factory stereo in a mid-ninties Chrysler minivan. I have no complaints about sound quality. The user interface is a bit intimidating. iPod functionality works quite well. FM tuner performance is adequate. I do wish that the folks writing the firmware would have paid more attention to how people would use a USB flash drive. It would not have been difficult for them to build a default playlist, indexed by track number (which are available in the tag section of each file). Cheap portable mp3 players do this all the time. The lack of control of playback order becomes a major issue when attempting to play back a large audiobook with 300+ tracks. The story needs to be presented in track order. I would not have purchased this unit if I had known that I couldn't enforce track number playback ordering.

I've had Pioneer in all my cars until recently. I aquired a Sony Explode head unit, intalled it & hated it with a passion! I immediately pulled & sold it to buy my DEH-P3100UB. All is good again. Pioneer has always had a powerful sound that blows away all other radios in this price range; The 3100ub is no exception. AWESOME sound w/ endless sound tuning possibilities. You can't beat the features as well. After a quick scan of the owners manual... I truely appreciate the "Multi-Control" stick. This head unit has a very clean face plate without all the clutter & buttons. My only complaint is the antiquated lcd display.

Replaced a Blaupunkt receiver. Day and Night difference. Very clear sound. Love that I can finally listen to my Ipod. Would have given it 5 stars, but changing the settings and customizing sound is a bit of a challenge. Had my 13 y/o set it up for me.

great receiver, great sound. Horrible functionality. The main knob is tiny, made for small people with tiny fingers. You need to turn the knob 5 times to raise the volume. I miss the factory unit. Using the AUX port and using the ipod itself is way easier than trying to use the confusing system pioneer set up with usb port. I bought this thing, used it for three days and its for sale. There is no way I'm going to fight thru the controls to get the command i need while driving. I advise trying out the stuff locally and coming to crutchfield for the purchase cause the prices here are better, the service is great and the shipping is fast.

Very good receiver. I love the joystick controls which is an improvement to the previous Pioneer I had with small buttons. I got the new unit primarily for my IPod Itouch. I love the radio channels levels 1 through 4 , which searches for the strongest signals for you. It is better to have that then to have to search manually , it is the Pioneer's version for scan button. I used to own the OEL display and am glad this unit does not have it. I really like the LCD instead.

My first Pioneer head unit. Great sounds, controls and features. I don't have an iPod but I do have a large capacity USB and to say at least it was easy to program. At least for me. The single joystick control requires some coordination to have it working the way you want it. I guess I got used with multi-botton panels like what most receivers would be. My gripe is with the mounting. I have a 06 Impreza and I was told I don't need any brackets or adapters to install it. I wasn't told I have to trim the panel. I had to do it, I like the receiver! It turned out beautiful with the bezel and all but still.... it was my wife's car and I told her Crutchfield told me it was a direct fit!

    Nothing but Problems v2.0

The 3rd issue I've had with this unit also deals with iphone/ipod compatibility but probably is the same for any mp3 player connected via the USB port. This issue was infrequent at first but became more and more frequent over time. While driving if I hit a bump the music will stop, just like how a cd player would skip. Sometimes the music will come right back on but most of the time I have to unplug and reconnect the cable to get it going again. Eventually the same problem started happening when I would interact with the unit. For example sometimes when I press the display button to see the time the music will just quit and like before I have to unplug and reconnect. It will do this with the press of any button at random times. The 4th issue I've had again deals with the silver knob. Sometimes it just quits working. As I mentioned before this knob is the only control for most functions so it's very frustrating when it won't register my command. I'm still in the process of a warranty claim on this so one day it may work like it's supposed to but right now it doesn't deserve a rating higher than 2 stars.

The first issue I have with this unit became prevalent immediately after installation and has to do with the control knob. The silver knob is used for most functions and is too shallow to grasp easily for a nail-biter like myself. I wish this was the only problem I had with this unit. The 2nd problem I ran into dealt with iphone compatibility. The unit would only recognize my phone about half of the time it was plugged in. The other half of the time it would flash "ERROR-19" until I unplugged the cable from the USB and plugged it back in. I've tried many different cables and that is not the problem. Nor is it an issue with my individual phone because this has happened with a 1st gen, a 3G, and also a 3Gs.

Pretty good head unit, noticeable improvement in sound, matches the rest of the center console with the green illumination, only disappointment is the center console bezel was to small for the faceplate trim with this radio, but after i took it off it fit very tightly (cant take off the faceplate) some sanding and it will be fine. Overall the is a good head-unit as Pioneer always is.

I purchased this unit because my old Pioneer finally kicked it after 5 years and I was in need of a cheap and quick replacement. The one button that 'does all' is annoying - I can't turn up the volume as easy as I was able to with my other unit - but you get used to it. The buttons can be confusing. The built in USB port is it's saving point. It's much better than the FM tuner that i had been using previously for my iPod - and the fact that it was satelite ready was nice too.

I just installed this HU, and I don't think I could have made a better decision. I have it paired with the Pioneer 3way 6x8's in all four corners in a 2002 ext cab Ranger. It is night and day difference from the stock radio with the Pioneer speakers. Many reviews say that the radio controls are confusing, but if you learn the remote you should have no problem. Crutchfield made the purchase a no brainer with all the accessories needed to install for free. I am COMPLETELY satisfied with my purchase, and will never go anywhere else to buy car audio products. Again, thanks for making this purchase so easy!

Crutchfield was great to order from, a bit higher priced than the local big box but worth it with the tools, harness and dash adapter. The Pioneer sounds great. I installed into a 1997 F150. The dash adapter was a very tight fit and I could barely get it to seat. I turned the receiver on, popped in a CD and WOW. If I didn't know better I would have thought I had installed new speakers also. The old factory Ford speakers sounded great. I eventually did swap to Infinity Reference, but there wasn't a lot of difference at lower volumes. The reciever controls do take reading the manual to learn, but hey once I have made the setup I haven't messed with it much. The remote makes regular use of the receiver much easier. I really like the USB shuffle and the input for my satellite radio. Great sounds, all the entertainment you need. A bit easier navigation and I would give 5 stars

    Verified customer (What's this?)
    Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

The good news: Crutchfield's instructions and adapters for the funky amp connections of the factory Infinity system in my aging Mitsubishi Eclipse made the electrical installation go extremely smoothly. The plastic universal mounting brackets and DIN pocket that they shipped with the receiver took a lot of futzing and re-fabrication to replicated the clean look of the original installation, though. (One saving grace: the plastic in the mounting brackets and pocket works very well with cyanoacrylate adhesive.) The bad news: the primary reason I picked this Pioneer model was the combination of a USB port with the option to drive the unit from the iPod itself, rather than trying to use Pioneer's obscure interface to manage playlists that anyway takes your eyes way too far off the road. BUT THIS OPTION DOESN'T WORK WITH 5TH-GENERATION IPODS!! Works with my iPhone, but not my trusty 60 GB 5th gen. So I get to keep the cigarette- lighter charger for the iPod AND an auxiliary input cable tangling around my center console. Thanks, Pioneer and Crutchfield, for leaving this little detail to the fine print of the owner's manual. Oh, and the absence of two separate antenna and power amp control outputs on this Pioneer means I lost the Infinity's control over the Eclipse's powered antenna.

Installed this unit with Polk Audio speakers in my 96 F150. The sound improvement over the old stock am/fm cassette is beyond measurement. Crutchfield package and instructions were flawless. That being said, Pioneer should go back to the drawing board for interface design. Maybe ask Apple for some help. Granted, I've only had it a couple of days, but tuning a radio should not require repeated reference to the manual (which would benefit from a better tech writer). Somehow while trying to tune the radio I changed the Ipod control from the head unit to the Ipod itself. I hope it stays that way. 5stars for sound 0 stars for interface.

Good sound. Smart about mis-wiring: it shut-down to force me to find my mistake (lamp power to speaker line) rather than burn up. *** If you ONLY want AM/FM/Aux and iPod connectivity (don't use thumb-drives), the next-down model has that in rear, iPod cable included; this one must have your cable plugged in front where it will get busted-off. *** VERY confusing user interface. Where is the ON button? Found it, how do you turn it OFF? (a careful long-press of SRC.... irritating, cuz if you rush it just changes source.) My wife and I sat there for 35 minutes, with the instructions, and could not pre-set one radio station (a 2-second job on many other radios since the 1940s). We did better ignoring the manual, which seems to omit key steps or confirmations, and just did random pokes and twists. The iPod control does attempt to follow iPod convention, but the uni-knob is so different from iPod control that I often just take what it plays because finding what I want would require 5 minutes parked with the manual (print it yourself from the link; the one in the box is too small). Volume twist usually adjusts volume. Glitz and "simplicity" taken too far. I prefer the plain-black looks and big-button controls of my '02 Accord's hi-end factory radio (but it has no Aux nor USB!). The user interface "IS" better than the fifty-buck radio/CD which I found in my 3nd-hand Odyssey; but Pioneer needs to do better, controls and manual.

The DEH-P3100UB is a great head unit if your playing digital media from an Ipod or USB drive but if you use the radio Id look at another head unit! To save and change the stations you have to navigate through various menus using the rotary commander that is very smooth and small unless your using the remote! I was optimistic but now disappointed. I previously had a Pioneer DEH-3000IB mounted in another vehicle which I fell in love with. I think Pioneer has the interface and remote aspect DOWN. The DEH-3000IB had great sound quality, I was able to route an Ipod cable behind the head unit to the glove box to keep my Ipod hidden. I expected the same from this head unit and unfortunately it did not deliver. While it has the same interface and remote layout, it's severely lacking in the sound quality compared to the 3000IB as well as in order to stealth mount an Ipod to the glove box you have to purchase a $100 box that adapts a USB port to the rear of the head unit. I have no idea why they wouldn't just allow you to use the same cable that worked with previous generations. I'm going back to the DEH-3000IB ASAP. Display Features

Detachable Face Security: This unit features Detachable Face Security. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: No face case is included with this unit.

LCD Display: The DEH-P3100UB features a black background with a one-line, 16-character white LED display, which takes advantage of MP3, WMA, iPod, XM Radio, and Sirius, plus CD Text-encoded discs. This display makes it easy to read and cycle through the song title, artist, and other text used by these sources.

Ever Scroll: When the Ever Scroll feature is set to On, recorded text information scrolls continuously on the display. It will auto-scroll up to 64 characters. Set this feature to Off if you prefer the information to scroll only once.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the Source button turns off audio output, but the clock display remains on. When the Clock Display has been turned off, pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely. Even if you have turned the radio completely off you can view the clock display by pressing the clock button. The clock will then remain On until you turn it back Off. When the unit is On you can select between the clock display or the audio track/tuner display.

    Audio Section

MOSFET Amplifier: The DEH-P3100UB is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the DEH-P3100UB are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DEH-P3100UB are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

Sound Retriever: The Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. When Sound Retriever is on, the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve to the original sound. There are two available levels of the Sound Retriever effect.

EEQ (Easy EQ): The DEH-P3100UB is equipped with a 3-band parametric EQ with 6 preset EQ settings. You can boost or cut each frequency band by +/- 6dB at 1dB intervals. Features of the Easy EQ include:

    • Selectable Center Frequencies:
      • Low: 40, 80, 100, or 160 Hz
      • Mid: 200, 500, 1k, or 2k Hz
      • High: 3k, 8k, 10k or 12k Hz
    • Preset EEQ Settings: Powerful, Super Bass, Vocal, Natural, Custom, and EQ Flat
    • Selectable Q Factors: 2 Narrow, 1 Narrow, 1 Wide, and 2 Wide

Selectable Loudness Levels: Loudness compensates for deficiencies in the low and high frequencies at low volumes. You can choose from three levels of loudness:

    • Low: +3.5dB (100Hz), +3dB (10kHz)
    • Mid:+10dB (100Hz), +6.5dB (10kHz)
    • High: +11dB (100Hz), +11dB (10kHz)

Dual 2.2-Volt Preamp Outputs: The Pioneer DEH-P3100UB features two pair of 2.2-volt preamp outputs (Front/Rear). The unit's rear preamp outputs can be configured as a dedicated non-fading RCA subwoofer output with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level. When the subwoofer output is turned on, you can select the frequency of the 18dB/octave low pass filter (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24).

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Speaker Output: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

High Pass Filter: If you do not want low frequency sounds to play from the front or rear speaker outputs, you can turn on the 12dB/octave High Pass Filter. The HPF has a selectable cutoff frequency (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz). Only frequencies higher than those in the selected range are output through the speakers.

Bass Boost: The Bass Boost function raises the level of sounds lower than 100Hz. You can select a desired level of bass boost between 0 and 6 (Gain: +12dB to 0dB).

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

    AM/FM Tuner

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 levels of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

    CD Playback

MP3/WMA/WAV Playback: This unit can play MP3/WMA/WAV files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, WMA files with a constant bit rate from 48-320 kbps, and WMA files with a variable bit rate from 48-384 kbps are supported. The unit is compatible with ID3 Tags and will display artist, folder, file, and album name, plus comments. Up to 8 directories, 99 folders and 999 files per disc are recognized by this unit.

AAC Decoding: This unit will playback AAC files encoded by iTunes recorded onto CDs, however files purchased from the iTunes Music Store (.m4p file extension) are not compatible. Tracks recorded at transmission rates of 16-320 kbps are playable on this unit.

List Button: The List button on the front panel allows you to track the title list, folder list, file list, preset channel list, or disc title list, depending upon the source. Once the List button is pressed, you can turn the multi-control knob to view each item on the list. To select the highlighted item, you can press the multi-control. This allows you to quickly make selections from most any source.

    External Device Connection

Front-Panel USB Input: The unit's front-panel USB type-A input allows you to connect a USB portable audio player or USB flash memory that is USB Mass Storage Class compliant (256MB to 250GB). This unit can play MP3/WMA/WAV/AAC files stored on a USB Mass Storage device in FAT16 or FAT32 file system formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, WMA files with a constant bit rate from 48-320 kbps, and WMA files with a variable bit rate from 48-384 kbps, along with AAC files with a bit rate from16-320 kbps  are supported. The unit is compatible with ID3 Tags and will display artist, folder, file, and album name, plus comments. Up to 8 directories, 500 folders and 15,000 files per USB device are recognized by this unit.

iPod Interface: The DEH-P3100UB can control and playback songs on an iPod. This unit supports only iPods with a standard Dock Connector. You can connect your iPod using the unit's front-panel USB input (a dock connector to USB cable, such as the one supplied with your iPod, or the optional 130CDIU50, is required). When connected via USB, you can choose to control the iPod from the head unit or the iPod itself (you can still change songs from the head unit, even when you are controlling the iPod manually.) You can perform multiple search functions, including playlist, genre, artist, album, and alphabetical searches. The headunit will also display your iPod's music file information, including Play Time, Song Title, Artist Name, and Album Title. While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the USB connection will power and charge your iPod. The Pioneer DEH-P3100UB is "Made for iPod/iPhone" compatible and supports the following iPod/iPhone model functions (as of Dec. 2009):
