Pioneer MVH-S501BS Digital Media Receiver

Lots of great features in an easy-to-use design

iPhone-friendly

With iPod and iPhone Direct Control, you can plug your device into the receiver's USB port and make music selections through the receiver. As a bonus, the MVH-S501BS will also charge your device while you're playing your tunes. If you own a compatible iPhone, you can take advantage of Siri® Eyes Free functionality with a touch of a button, accessing a variety of functions with your voice commands.

Great with Android

Android users can control their music via Bluetooth or plug into the front panel USB port and play music while getting a charge. If you own a newer Android phone, you'll be glad to hear that the MVH-S501BS supports Android Open Accessory 2.0 (AOA 2.0), so you can use your USB port to stream music from Android 4.1 (or later) devices.

You can also plug in a thumb drive and enjoy FLAC, MP3, WMA, and WAV files, or use the aux input to connect an MP3 player or portable satellite radio.

If you're using an iPod, iPhone, or USB device, Pioneer's integrated MIXTRAX virtual DJ technology can turn your music collection into a non-stop playlist, complete with incredibly cool mix effects.

Perfect for Pandora

If you're a Pandora fan, you can use your iPhone or Android phone to create unique stations that play nothing but your favorite kinds of music. You can rate songs, bookmark them for purchase, and learn more with complete track data.

Spotify, too

The MVH-S501BS also works with the Spotify app, so you can use the receiver's controls to play, pause, or skip. With a few more presses, you can browse playlists and radio stations.

Other apps

But that's not all. Pioneer's Media App Control, lets you enjoy tunes from various other music apps, like iHeartRadio®.  And the Pioneer ARC app lets you control your receiver's basic functions from your phone. You can adjust settings or access your stored music or favorite music apps directly through the ARC app.

Make and take calls

The included external microphone picks up your conversation, and you'll hear your caller through your vehicle's speakers. Wide Band Speech Technology, which basically doubles the usual bandwidth, ensures clear and easy-to-understand conversations

The dual phone connection lets you pair two phones, while “Guest Mode" allows you to add or replace a mobile device with ease. That's a great feature for a family car with multiple drivers, or one driver with multiple devices.

Plenty of performance

With no CD player to worry about, Pioneer's designers happily loaded in lots of other features into this receiver's compact chassis. A powerful MOSFET amplifier gives you outstanding sound, while Advanced Sound Retriever (ASR) technology brings back the details lost when you compress music.

Time alignment and a 13-band graphic equalizer let you adjust the sound to suit your tastes, while three sets of 4-volt preamp outputs will come in handy when you're ready to add amplifiers and subs to your system.

Satellite radio-ready

You can also add a SiriusXM satellite radio tuner (not included, requires subscription) to your MVH-S501BS. Satellite radio offers an unparalleled variety of music, news, sports, and talk, and your favorite channels will stay with you, even when you're in the middle of nowhere.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

This digital media receiver will not play CDs.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Easy and Inexpensive Update for My Old Truck

Brody from Hampton, SC on 1/16/2019

    1992 Chevrolet S10
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought as an inexpensive update to my old square-body S-10. Since it's not a CD player, the unit is a very shallow mount, leaving plenty of clearance for wires in any application. Bluetooth setup is easy as they come and internal amp has enough power to drive stock-type speakers. My only complaint is the rotary control lags at times and does not respond well to quicker spins. Otherwise, this really fit the bill for the installation, just an inexpensive way to add bluetooth in place of my old Delco tape deck.

    Pros: Price, Mount Depth, Features

    Cons: Rotary Control Lags

I bought this receiver to replace a 2+ year old Pioneer that had stopped working properly. Also purchased it because I didn't want to change wiring harnesses, just wanted a plug and play. I do like all the bells and whistles, the flexibility of audio adjustments and color display adjustments. I can't say I have completely tested all functions due to I have not purchased my amp and subs yet, but looking forward to playing with the audio/crossover/EQ features.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was really happy with this receiver at first. But the thing that i couldnt make any better was the brightness. The screen itself was too dim to see in broad daylight with the adjustments all the way up on white color. Another lighting problem was the number selections faded out to dim like the screen. The "3 / mix" was bright as it should be and faded outward to dim on the "1 and 6". When they are white the "1" is actually pink.. Over time (thankfully within the 60 day moneyback) it just kept getting worse. The second day it wouldnt turn on. And today (its been about a month) it will not turn on at all. All the connections are soldered by the way. Another problem was with my iPod connecting vie usb. The first time it worked, playing the songs and everything besides skipping to the next one. I tried connecting it again and it wont recognize it.. but it was charging. Hopefully its just a bad unit but Im not at all satisfied with Pioneers illumination. Ill be getting a different brand. Hope this helps.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I can't believe retail for this receiver is $100. So many features at a low price point. I had a high-end receiver previous to this that didn't have bluetooth and required a wire to connect my phone. After a couple of apple updates, connecting my phone with this wire became a hit or miss, and very little to no support from the brand. I was fed-up and went with Pioneer and I'm so glad I did! I'm super happy with the purchase.

Pros: Features, sounds, and ability to expand my car audio system.

Cons: Hard to see lcd during the day.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm not a music expert and don't know anything about adjusting freq levels and bass and all that, but after expert played around with the settings in the stereo, my system sounds better than amazing! Installation itself is pretty straight-forward and easy. If I can do it myself, literally anyone can. Just don't cut any wires you're not absolutely 100% positive you need to cut. I almost destroyed my audio system by doing that.

Pros: Bluetooth (guest Bluetooth function for a friend to connect!), precise volume control, beautiful LED lights

Cons: The installation instructions were a little vague, needed to visit a professional shop to get specific instructions.

Sounds amazing and installation was very simple and straight forward. Only frustration is switching between phones for Bluetooth media source. There is no easy way to do this. Wife and I both used Google pixel Android phones. Independently they work excellent. But when both are connected you can't choose which one plays the music.

Pros: Great sound Simple installation Lots of colors for display (looks awesome)

Cons: Bluetooth can be frustrating with two devices connected.

Easy enough to install but getting to understand the finer workings takes a bit of time due to the minimal user guide. The screen is quite difficult to view at times and provides a nasty glare even when not in direct sunlight. Other than this, I am pleased with the unit and would feel comfortable with another one.

When it works it's great but that is not often. Bluetooth is like kryptonite to this thing. I have a MVH-X390BT in my truck that is perfect, picks up and plays in seconds. The MVH-S501BS either starts in about thirty seconds or (most of the time) it just searches and then gives up. I've had the same problem on both Apple and Android phones, so it's definitely a problem in the stereo. There was an initial problem with wiring the unit in but Crutchfield support quickly remedied the problem with an additional harness. Those guys are pretty sharp.

After less than a year the volume knob erroneously reads inputs. For instance, when turning the volume up: the volume will hover around current volume, or tick up a notch or two, or tick down a notch or two. I've disassembled the face and determined the cause to be worn potentiometer contacts. This is confirmed by applying slight pressure to the up and right while slowly turning the knob. Using this tedious technique, SOME function is restored.

Perfect purchase! Simple install, amazing features for an incredible price! It's incredible how stereo decks have changed over the years. I can remember looking at decks ten years ago, and I never would have found anything at this price with all of the features this one has! I really love the ARC app Pioneer came up with. Makes it really easy to customize the deck. I chose to pay for Crutchfield to prep the wiring harness for me, and I'm really glad I did. I'm sure I could have done it myself, but the money is worth the peace of mind with knowing that it was done right, and that I won't have to second-guess the job I would have done.

Pros: Simple install, amazing features for an incredible price! It's incredible how stereo decks have changed over the years. I can remember looking at decks ten years ago, and I never would have found anything at this price with all of the features this one has! I really love the ARC app Pioneer came up with. I dare you to find a better head unit. This thing is super easy to install, and very light weight which I found nice. The 3 pre outs made stereo wiring super clean. This thing has every stereo audio setting for properly sound settings to front and rear, and obviously the sub as well. Dual Bluetooth is nice, bt/Spotify audio works flawlessly. Everyone needs Bluetooth in their life for sure. Hey if your stereo doesn't get bright enough you obviously need window tint...

    Pros: All of the features!

    Cons: Doesn't make espresso.

Good sound but the display could be better.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall the unit is very nice. The sound is great with the adjustments you can make with the EQ and the Loudness plus Extra Bass settings. I have these hooked up to 2 sets of Rockford Fosgate Prime and they sound really good. The only thing I don't like is that the display brightness doesn't get nearly bright enough. In bright sun the display is pretty much unreadable. I have it turned up as high as it will go. Other than that, it's a great head unit.

    Pros: Great sound adjustability

Cons: Display doesn't get bright enough

Great Head Unit. Was super easy to install and has all the features I'm looking for. 50watt rms x4 channels, control the button and screen colors, separate sub control. Only difficulty I had was installing it with the dash kit. It's not a CD player so the HU is not very deep and the mounting points didn't line up with the dash kit. I installed in a 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse and used a dash kit to convert from a double dinn to single. I had to drill a few holes in the plastic dash instal kit, pretty simple modification.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Positive points. Sound quality, is very good, its small but it packs a good punch without an amp. major sound improvement from my 8 plus year old non blue tooth pioneer. Sounds like an entirely new system. Its small and light weight. Multiple pre amp connections are nice. The bad points, I am dating myself here. I've used pioneer all my life. I do not like the fact that you cannot tweak the audio setting from the remote control. I have this in my cuddy cabin of my boat and I usually could adjust from the drivers seat of boat, now I have to go inside and actually adjust at the head unit. Kinda a problem but I will manage. maybe try the ARC app. Other major issues. 1, the manual it comes with is Useless, its an abbreviated quick set up version and really doesn't help much IMO. If you buy this make sure you download the full users manual online or print it out. Trust me it will save you some major headaches. Other major issue is that if you hold the power button down it will not shut off all the way the clock lights remain on. My old one did shut off completely. This is in a boat so no acc power switch. My radio has a constant power feed. I can fix this by adding a switch to prevent this but in the interim if I detach the face plate it shuts down everything as needed. Just my 2 cents. Nice radio for the money.

Pros: good price point, sounds good,

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Adequate receiver for the price and relative to what's available. But if there had been a receiver (just one!) with both a volume knob and a tuner knob, I would have bought it for twice as much. Wanted to replace a receiver in a 2006 car with no bluetooth, so I bought. Removal of the old receiver went pretty easily following Crutchfield instructions, but the installation was complicated -- and ultimately unsuccessful for the streering wheel control. The installation went from Crutchfield instructions (somewhat vague) to the instructions for the plastic frame (hard to follow) to the instructions for the receiver (even more obscure). Had to call Crutchfield twice, and got a lot of patient help. But the steering wheel controls never worked despite following step-by-step instructions over the phone and getting a new version of the wiring. I'd like to return the steering wheel controls, but too much work to get it out. Overall, I am disappointed with the choice of receivers, with the installation instructions, and with the steering wheel controls not working.

Pros: Has bluetooth and USB port.

Cons: Only one knob. Need to read instructions extensively to operate -- very little intuitive or easy. Installation instructions complicated. Steering wheel controls never worked.

Great unit for the price! has all high end features. Pandora support seems good and haven't had any issues. bluetooth and be spotty with occasional skipping, but otherwise has no issues using a USB cable and the ARC app allows you to pick a fully custom color and not the 8 or so pre-set colors and of course, when on bluetooth you can use the face buttons to control the media. all new to me since i upgraded from a DEH-1900MP Only thing i cant comment on would be phone calls over bluetooth since ive never used it Would definitely recommend for anyone looking for all the features for a good price.

For this price point, you really can't go wrong with this deck! I stopped using CDs a Long time ago, and got tired of commercials on the radio, so, I started looking at media decks, and this one(MVH-S501BS) had everything I wanted! Full color dot matrix display, f,r and sub low level outputs, USB jack...would be nice to have one in the rear, but you can get micro USB drives that barely stick out of the face. The controls are pretty well laid out, pretty easy to understand.. the bluetooth is great! hands free calling is great! Overall, I think you get ALOT for your money here! only one bad thing... it is almost impossible to read the display during the day(sunny day) without cupping your hand around the face...(a "daytime" display would net 5 stars.) also, you have to make sure you CORRECTLY pair the bluetooth with your phone or else it always cuts out after 30 seconds to a minute...

Pros: USB, Remote, Bluetooth, detachable face, built in EQ/Crossover

Cons: no rear USB, display hard to read in daylight

Great media player! I haven't used the CD player in my old receiver in years. I used the aux input or radio only. I figured why not get a new media player with Bluetooth and USB etc? This Pioneer sounds excellent, the three 4 volt pre-outs made my subwoofers really come alive! My old unit had only a single 2.5 volt pre-out and I needed the gain set about 3/4 of the way up on my amplifier to get any decent sound from my subs. I actually had to turn my gain down when I installed this unit! I love the multiple screen colors, the 13 band EQ, crossover, and the support for the ARC app on my iPhone, which allows control of the unit on my phone. Sound quality is excellent, and it supports FLAC lossless files through the USB port. All in all, a great unit! I don't miss CDs one bit!

I just installed this in my 1997 Jetta. It was a squeeze, but I made it work. Somehow I missed in the description that the unit came with a removable faceplate. This delightful surprise is saving me from additional wiring since for some odd reason many VWs don't have a switchable 12v readily available for the radio, so it was molest the OG harness, run down into the fuse panel, or heaven forbid, disconnect the power from the stereo or the battery every time I leave the car. After that dilemma solved without any work, I installed the ready harness and the stereo. Piece of cake. Setting up the stereo options and pairing with my iPhone was as easy as can be, and took less than 5 minutes from start to finish, including preset stations. The sound is fantastic, and I love the retro dot matrix digital display as a child of the 80s. The calling feature works great, and people can hear me fine above my non-existent sound dampener under the car o_O Now I want to put one in our Cabrio, especially now that I know about the faceplate.

    2000 Jeep Cherokee
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just instalked this head unit in my 1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ, and am very happy with it. I like the fact that it doesn't have a CD slot to let dirt and dust into it (I do take the vehicle out on trails in the summers), and I like that it has built-in crossovers for the main speakers and the subwoofer outputs. It also seems to have reasonable power output that is pretty clean - I paired some Pioneer component speakers in the front doors and am very happy with the sound quality. The Bluetooth wouldn't connect to my phone on the first try, but it worked on the second try and hasn't had a problem since (it has been three weeks now). The only thing I can say that I'm a tiny bit disappointed with is the display itself - it's bright enough and the menu is layed out ok, but it's a dot-matrix display and reminds me of what high-tech used to look like in the early 90's, lol. I would have liked to see a more modern looking design. But for the price, with the power, clarity, and features, I really am not complaining. I think this was an excellent purchase for the money.

Pros: Built-in crossovers for both the main speakers and the subwoofer outputs, decent power and clean sound.

Cons: Display is functional but pretty dated in appearance - would have liked something a little more modern than an old dot-matrix style look.

Great bang for the buck. I cant believe the amount of functionality available for under a hundred bucks. Back in my day in the early 90s, a basic CD player in my dash would have cost 500 1990s dollars. This head unit is better in every way and is available new for less than 100 2017 dollars. I bought this for my sons 1991 F-150. It has the stock stereo cassette player. After telling him what cassettes were, we had a laugh and I bought this and a set of speakers to update his factory stereo.

A nice radio / Media player. I choose this as the dash in a Mercury Gran Marquis slopes forward. So I found CD's could get scratched in a similar model in my Crown Victoria. Sound quality is first rate. 30% improvement on FM stereo over the OEM CD radio. On USB stick with WAV files it gains additional clarity and sound quality.

Pros: Small footprint. Standard DIN size with a much shorter depth dimensions. Clean powerful sound.

Cons: Pioneers wiring guide is not clear enough. The print is also quite small. I found that Pioneer has a Youtube video that answers all the basic wiring questions I had on this unit. So they are aware of this shortcoming.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've come from a number of single-DIN radios in the past few years, mostly from Kenwood, that have left a lot to be desired in the stability and bluetooth connectivity department. Lots of glitches, freezes, and bluetooth issues in day to day use, despite looking good on paper. The newer Pioneer units, and especially the 501BS are the opposite. A little light on features and settings on paper, but the execution is excellent. Fast, readable screen, responsive to control inputs, rock solid bluetooth connectivity, no nagging software issues. At the end of the day, I want a fast, rock solid stereo in my daily driver, and I don't want to be constantly messing with it to get features to work. The Pioneer 501BS really delivers on that promise, and this particular model returns to a slightly higher density two line display similar to their models a few generations ago that looks better than some of the more recent offerings.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I went with this receiver since it was one of the newest that Pioneer has come out with. Just recently installed it into my Jeep with Polk DB521 speakers and it rocks. The controls on the radio are a little confusing but if you download Pioneer's Arc app it makes it much easier to understand the controls. Just about everything on the radio can be controlled via the app. Bluetooth is quick to respond to my iPhone SE when it is turned on. Tons of options for personalizing it including colors, views, and layouts. FM signal strength leaves a little to be desired but I live in a rural area and not many radios can pick up the local stations clearly. I mostly use Aux, USB, and Bluetooth for my music anyways. Call quality over bluetooth and the supplied microphone are really good, no complaints from those I have called. Bluetooth also autoconnects after being off for a bit, can take a few seconds but will connect and continue playing music which is nice. Overall really happy, especially since Crutchfield included the dash kit, harness, and antenna adapter for free! Money well spent to modernize my Jeep.

Pros: Just look at the specs, not much to complain about.

Cons: FM signal strength leaves a little to be desired.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth 4.0: The MVH-S501BS is equipped with built-in Bluetooth 4.0, allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles -

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.6 (Hands Free Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.3 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.5 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Pioneer MVH-S501BS.

Multi-Device Pairing w/ Dual Phone Connection: Up to five Bluetooth-compatible devices can be paired to this receiver. You are even able to keep two Bluetooth-enabled phones connected at the same time, so you can make and receive calls from either phone through the head unit. You can only stream music from one phone at a time; you will be able switch between the two phones in the head unit's menu. Additional pairing features include -

    • SSP (Simple Secure Pairing: With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the MVH-S501BS without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings (your phone must also support SSP).
    • USB Pairing for iPhone: You can also pair your Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+) by simply connecting it to the Pioneer head unit via USB and following a single prompt on the head unit's display.
    • Guest Mode: "Guest Mode" allows you to add and replace a 5th mobile device instantly to the receiver; Guest Mode is a great feature for a family vehicle with multiple drivers or a driver with multiple devices because it allows users to pair and delete devices easily without a lengthy registration or deletion process.

Hands-Free Communication (w/ External Mic): The MVH-S501BS supports wireless hands-free communication (HFP/PBAB) for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. And, thanks to the latest Hands-Free Profile (HFP 1.6) with wideband speech capability, the MVH-S501BS provides more natural sound quality and details during wireless calls. The MVH-S501BS allows you to carry on a phone conversation from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone using the head unit's external microphone and your car audio speakers. During a conversation you can adjust the volume, as well as switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering A Call: During an incoming call, the head unit will display the caller's information and an audible ring tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker. You can manually answer an incoming call or have the unit automatically answer the call.
    • Making A Call: Using the MVH-S501BS, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways -
      • Phone Book: The phone book in your Bluetooth enabled cellular phone will be transferred automatically when the phone is paired to this unit. After finding the number you want to call in the phone book from the head unit, you can select the entry and make the call. If a lot of numbers are registered in the phone book, you can search for a phone number by the contact person's name alphabetically.
      • Presets: You can easily store up to six phone numbers as presets for speed dialing.
      • Call Log: The most recent calls dialed, received, and missed are stored in memory. You can browse them and call numbers from these lists.
      • Voice Dialing (Siri): When paired and connected with an iPhone 4S or later via Bluetooth, the Pioneer head unit has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. You'll be able to dial a phone number or contact via voice command.

Wireless Audio Streaming: The Pioneer MVH-S501BS also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The head unit can stream music stored on your Bluetooth enabled device or music apps you have downloaded on your device. When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call.

    • Music Control: In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat), the MVH-S501BS lets you browse your stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, etc. (AVRCP 1.4 phones only; which includes Android 4.0+ and iPhone 5.0+).
    • Song/Artist Info: The head unit will also display song/album/artist information from your Bluetooth device's stored music and select music apps on your device.

Siri Eyes-Free Control: When paired and connected to an iPhone with Siri via Bluetooth, the Pioneer MVH-S501BS has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. Simply press and hold head unit's phone key to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the MVH-S501BS and its microphone. You can even ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone with Siri. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

Note: The head unit's front-panel LCD will only display hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Pioneer digital media receiver; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device)..

    Android & iPhone Integration

Android Direct Connect via USB: The Pioneer MVH-S501BS enables playback of stored music and music apps on select Android devices through its front-panel USB port. There are two types of modes to choose from based on your type of Android smartphone and what content you want to listen to.

    • AOA 2.0 (w/ Pioneer ARC App): The Pioneer MVH-S501BS supports Android Open Accessory 2.0 (AOA 2.0), which lets you connect your Android smartphone (OS 4.1+) to the MVH-S501BS's front-panel USB port and listen to stored music and select music apps from your Android device through the Pioneer receiver. You'll be able to control basic playback functions such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track. By downloading the Pioneer ARC App, you also be able to view song/artist information and browse your Android smartphone's music library from the head unit's front-panel controls. You can browse your stored music library by Playlist, Artist, Song, Album, or Genre. You'll also still be able to access other functions and applications from your Android smartphone's touchscreen, while listening to music through the head unit. If you make a call or answer a call from your smartphone while listening to music in this mode, the music will pause until you are finished with the call and then start back up again.
    • MTP (Media Transfer Protocol): The MVH-S501BS also supports MTP for playback & control of stored MP3/WMA music files on your Android (OS 4.0+) device through the Pioneer receiver's front-panel USB port. In this mode, you get basic playback control (like Play/Pause & Previous/Next Track), plus song/artist information on the receiver's LCD screen. During MTP connection, you cannot use your Android smartphone's touchscreen to control music playback and you cannot select music apps from your smartphone for playback. However, you can continue to listen to stored music on your Android smartphone through the head unit while you check your Calendar, Facebook, Texts, etc on your phone.
Note: Not all Android devices are compatible with AOA 2.0 or MTP, regardless of operating system.

iPod/iPhone Direct Connect via USB: The Pioneer MVH-S501BS supports audio playback of stored music & music apps on your Apple iPod/iPhone (with Lightning connector), along with control and song/artist information display through its front-panel USB port. You'll need an Apple Certified Lightning-to-USB cable to make connection. From the head unit, you can browse your iPhone's or iPod touch's music library by Artist, Album, Song, Genre, Playlist, Composer, Podcast, or Audiobook (make sure the Pioneer ARC App is installed and open on your Apple device). Mobile Device Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1.5A of current to power and charge your connected Android smartphone or Apple iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position (if your mobile device has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it).

USB Auto Function: The receiver's "USB Auto" function can be set to ON to enable the head unit to automatically switch to the USB source for playback when a USB-enabled device is connected. If set to OFF, the receiver will not switch sources and simply charge the connected USB device.

    Internet+SiriusXM+AM/FM Radio

Pandora Internet Radio: The free Pandora App lets you play music from the Pandora music service through the Pioneer MVH-S501BS using your USB or Bluetooth connected Apple iPhone (iOS 9.0+) device, or Bluetooth connected Android (OS 4.0+) smartphone. Your iPhone or Android smartphone will also need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, LTE (4G), EDGE, or WiFi. The MVH-S501B provides control over the Pandora music service and displays Artist, Album, and Song information.

    • Station List w/ Shuffle: You can select Pandora stations from your Station List by date or alphabetically (A-Z). You can also listen to songs played randomly from various stations within your Station List.
    • New Stations + Delete: New stations can be created based on the current songs or artists playing. You can also delete a station from your Pandora station list.
    • Skip Songs: You can skip song tracks within a station. You cannot skip back to a previous song. Pandora limits the number of skips allowed.
    • Thumbs Up/Down: You can give songs a thumbs up or thumbs down to help Pandora personalize stations to suit your preferences.
    • Bookmarking: The song/artist currently being played can be bookmarked & stored in your Pandora account.

Note: Access to the Pandora service will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet. Pandora is not supported in Canada & only available in the United States.

Spotify Online Music Service: The Pioneer MVH-S501BS has the ability to playback & control content from the Spotify music app on your USB or Bluetooth connected iPhone (iOS 8.0+) device, or Bluetooth-paired Android (OS 4.0) smartphone. You can play, pause and skip tracks, browse playlists, albums and radio stations through the Pioneer receiver's front-panel controls. You also get song/artist information on the unit's front-panel LCD. Access to the Spotify service will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone or Android device to connect to the Internet. If you are a Spotify Premium user (requires a monthly paid subscription), you can enjoy ad-free, high quality music even when there is no internet connection.

SiriusXM Ready: The Pioneer digital media receiver is SiriusXM 3.0 Ready, so you can listen to commercial-free music, all your favorite sports, exclusive talk and entertainment, comedy, news, traffic, weather, and more. Simply connect the SiriusXM Connect Vehicle Tuner (20SXV300, sold separately) to the dedicated SiriusXM port on the rear of the head unit and enjoy satellite radio without additional translators or cables. With the SiriusXM Connect tuner you'll have access to more than 175 channels of exclusive programming directly from SiriusXM; check out the most popular SiriusXM subscription packages here. Additional features include:

    • Content Lists + Category Scan: The Channel List displays a list of all available channels. The Category List displays all available categories and stations within those categories. During Category Scan, the live broadcast for each channel in the current category plays for six seconds at a time.
    • Song/Artist Information: Displayed Information such as Channel Name, Artist Name, & Song Title can be viewed on the head unit's LCD.
    • Replay: The Replay function lets you pause, rewind, and replay up to 60 minutes of live content from the station that you are currently listening to.
    • Presets: You can store up to 18 SiriusXM Satellite Radio Station Presets with special tuning features.
      • TuneStart: TuneStart automatically start songs from the beginning when you tune to one of your preset music channels stored on the current band of presets.
      • TuneScan: TuneScan lets you scan through short previews of songs you may have missed on music channels stored on the current band of presets.
      • TuneMix: Create a music channel that's a blend of songs made up from the music channels stored on the current band of presets.
    • Parental Control: The SiriusXM Parental Control feature allows you to control access to channels that you consider inappropriate for younger listeners. When enabled, The Parental Control feature requires you to enter a 4-digit passcode to tune to the locked channels.
Note: A separate SiriusXM Satellite Radio subscription is required (operates on the XM Network). However, you can easily add this SiriusXM tuner to an existing Sirius or XM account for a Multi-Radio Discount Plan.

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

    • RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible AM/FM stations.
    • BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.
    • Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 levels of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

    USB/Aux Playback

USB MSC Playback: In addition to Apple and Android device connectivity, the digital media receiver's front-panel USB-A 2.0 port allows you to connect a USB Mass Storage Class (MSC) device, such as a USB thumbdrive (up to 32GB). The USB port enables audio playback & control of MP3, WMA, AAC, FLAC, and WAV audio files stored on your portable USB MSC device through the Pioneer MVH-S501BS. Basic playback controls included Play/Pause, FW/RW, Previous/Next Track, and Random/Repeat. Song/artist information such as track, artist, and album name will also be displayed on the head unit.

Audio File Compatibility: The Pioneer MVH-S501BS supports the following types of MP3, WMA, AAC, & WAV files loaded onto a USB MSC device.

Song/Artist Information: During MP3/WMA/AAC/FLAC playback, the unit displays any recorded ID3 Tag (ver. 1.x/2.x) and WMA/AAC/FLAC Tag information; including artist, song, and album name.

Playback Controls: The Pioneer digital media receiver provides basic operations like Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind, Previous/Next Track, and Repeat/Random for USB device playback.

Auxiliary Input: The MVH-S501BS is equipped with a front-panel 3.5mm stereo minijack auxiliary input for connecting external audio sources, such as a portable digital audio player.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Pioneer in-dash head unit utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The MVH-S501BS is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

    • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels
Note: The power specifications for the MVH-S501BS are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.

4V/6CH Preamp Outputs + Sub Control: The Pioneer MVH-S501BS features three pair of 4.0-volt preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The unit's front and rear preamp output can be faded (front/rear), while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The Pioneer MVH-S501BS lets you adjust the subwoofer preamp output's phase (normal/reverse) and volume (+10 to -24).

Crossovers: The MVH-S501BS employs high-pass and low-pass crossovers to tailor the head unit to your connected speaker setup.

    • Standard: Allows you to set the high-pass and low-pass crossover network for a standard Front, Rear, and Subwoofer speaker setup using either speaker-level or low-level outputs.
      • HPF: The head unit's -6, -12, -18, or -24dB/octave high pass filter only allows frequencies higher than those in the selected range (25, 31.5, 40, 50, 63, 80, 100, 125, 160, 200, or 220Hz) to your front and rear speakers through the unit's speaker-level or line-level outputs.
      • LPF: The subwoofer preamp output features an -6, 12, -18, -24, -30, or -36dB/octave low pass filter so only frequencies lower than those in the selected range (25, 31.5, 40, 50, 63, 80, 100, 125, 160, 200, or 220Hz) are output to your connected subwoofer.
    • Network: Allows you to set the high-pass and low-pass crossover network for a complex 3-way speaker system with Highs, Mids, and Sub using low-level outputs only.
      • Highs: The high-pass crossover for your tweeters can be set to 1.25, 1.6, 2, 2.5, 3.15, 4, 5, 6.3, 8, 10, or 12.5 kHz with a -6, -12, -18, or -24 dB/octave roll-off.
      • Mids: You can set a high-pass and low-pass crossover from your midrange/midbass drivers. The high-pass crossover can be set to 1.25, 1.6, 2, 2.5, 3.15, 4, 5, 6.3, 8, 10, or 12.5 kHz with a -6 to -36dB/octave roll-off. The low-pass crossover can be set to 25, 31.5, 40, 50, 63, 80, 100, 125, 160, 200, or 250 Hz with a -6, -12, -18, or -24 dB/octave roll-off.
      • Lows: The low-pass crossover for your subwoofers can be set to 25, 31.5, 40, 50, 63, 80, 100, 125, 160, 200, or 250 Hz with a -6 to --6, -12, -18, -24, -30, or -36dB/octave roll-off.

EEQ (Easy EQ) w/ 13-Band Graphic EQ: There are seven stored equalizer curves which you can easily recall at any time. You can choose from - Powerful, Natural, Vocal, Super Bass, Flat, Custom 1, or Custom 2. The Custom 1 and Custom 2 EQ modes allow you to manually adjust the level (+/- 12dB) of each band of the head unit's 13-band graphic equalizer (50, 80, 125, 200, 315, 500, 800, 1.25k, 2k, 3.15k, 5k, 8k, and 12.5k Hz).

Audio Settings: The head unit provides further sound adjustments for your car audio system.

    • Listening Position & Time Alignment: For a better sound-stage you can select your optimal listening position. You can choose from All, Front Left, Front Right, or Front. You can also select to manually fine tune the sound stage, using Digital Time Alignment (DTA) by selecting the distance (0-140") for each individual speaker in the vehicle compared to your listening position.
    • Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. When the Advanced Sound Retriever is on, the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve to the original sound. There are two available levels of the Advanced Sound Retriever effect.
    • D. Boost: Boosts the bas level dynamically to offer an effect as if a subwoofer was added to the system. D.Bass can be set to High, Low, or Off.
    • Loudness: The Loudness function compensates for deficiencies in the low- and high-frequency ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness to High, Mid, Low, or Off.
    • Speaker Level: You can adjust each speaker and sub channel independently from -24 to +10 to best even out the sound in your vehicle.
    • Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the unit's FM volume level, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4 dB to +4 dB.

Rear Speaker Setup: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

MIXTRAX: Drawing from Pioneer's rich DJ heritage and passion for music, MIXTRAX delivers a unique DJ infused listening experience to listeners in the car. MIXTRAX is an innovative Pioneer technology that creates a non-stop mix of your music library complete with a range of DJ-inspired effects. MIXTRAX takes your typical music listening experience and creates a non-stop mix of your music with 3 random DJ effects and transitions, by removing the breaks and pauses normally introduced between tracks and replacing them with various beats. MIXTRAX is compatible with USB-connected iPhone & USB MSC devices. There is also a Short Playback option which limits the amount of time each track plays; select from 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, or 3 minutes.

Note: The MIXTRAX function is not compatible with Android or the Pandora app.

Beep Tone: A beep tone can be heard when a button is pressed on the head unit's front-panel to confirm operation. This feature can be turned On or Off.

    Remote & App Control

Advanced Remote Control App (for Apple iOS & Android): Download the Pioneer ARC (Advanced Remote Control) App onto your Apple iOS (8.0+) or Android (4.1+) device to turn your smartphone or tablet device into a remote control for the Pioneer head unit. Your Apple iOS or Android device can be connected via USB or Bluetooth. The following control features are available via the Pioneer Advanced Remote Control App.

    • Song/Artist Info + Album Art: The Pioneer Advanced Remote Control App provides song/artist information with album art for the music stored on your Apple iOS or Android device. You also get station identification for AM/FM radio; if an AM/FM station supports RDS, you will even get song/artist info.

    • Select Apps: From the Pioneer ARC app, you can also pick from select music apps (like Pandora, iHeart, Spotify, TuneIn) that are installed on your Apple iOS or Android device. Once you select a specific music app, that particular music app opens on your mobile device for playback control.
Note: If you switch to other applications and functions, such as using other iOS device or Android applications or placing calls from your smartphone, you must restart the Pioneer ARC app on your iOS device or Android device.

Wireless Remote Control: The MVH-S501BS comes with an IR wireless remote control. The remote allows you to control the volume, switch between sources, pause playback, skip music tracks, change display info, and answer/end Bluetooth phone call. You can also mute the volume (function that cannot be performed from the front panel).

Steering Wheel Control Input: The head unit features a 3.5mm steering wheel control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately).

    Display Features

Detachable Face Security: The Pioneer MVH-S501BS in-dash digital media receiver features detachable face security. No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

2-Line LCD: The Pioneer MVH-S501BS features a 2-line LCD screen with the choice of English, Spanish, or French text.

Color Customization: Color Customization lets the user match their receiver illumination to their vehicle's interior lighting. Over 210,000 colors are available to match the illumination of almost any car. The button illumination and display illumination colors can be customized separately for an endless number of color combinations. You can select from 12 preset colors, customize an illumination color (by adjusting Red/Blue/Green brightness levels), or scan through a variety of colors.

Brightness Control: You can manually adjust the brightness (1-10) of the head unit's display to suit your viewing needs. You can also sync the receiver's illumination to the head unit's clock or your vehicle's headlights. To dim the receiver's display automatically when the vehicle's headlights are turned on, you'll need to connect the orange/white wire of the head unit's harness to your vehicle's parking light circuit.

MIXTRAX Illumination: MIXTRAX features a club-style illumination that enhances the mood with a dynamic dance club-like lighting effect. As MIXTRAX begins, lights start pulsing to the beat of the music, adding an extra level of entertainment. You can choose different patterns of lighting variations from sound pressure level or low-pass synchronization modes. The lighting effects work like a spectrum analyzer, reaching peak colors based on the intensity of the music.

Clock Display: Thanks to the receiver's 2-line LCD, the clock can be displayed along with source information. Pressing and holding the "SRC/OFF" button turns off the head unit's audio output, but the clock display and button illumination remains on (you can then press the "DISP" button to turn off all illumination).

This is the only one of those with the parameters I selected to have no 1 star reviews. [ Kris  Mar 12, 2018 ]
I liked the idea of the digital media receiver and purchased an early model in early 2017. Pioneer MVH-X580BS. There were a lot of bugs with the bluetooth connectivity and the preouts were weak at 2V. I wanted to upgrade to a newer pioneer hopefully to alieviate these problems without having to change any wiring harnesses. This is why I chose this Pioneer MVH-S501BS. I hope it works better than their earlier release. [ Andrew  Mar 10, 2018 ]
I don't use CDs anymore. The unit is simple with plenty of functionality. It has Bluetooth, HFP 1.6, Siri Eyes Free, source level adjustment, and it's only $100. [ J  Feb 25, 2018 ]
    Good price on a great radio! [ Chris  Feb 22, 2018 ]
    no need for a cd player [ S  Feb 20, 2018 ]
My current deck is an older version of this. It stopped playing the rear channels a little while ago. This week it stopped playing any channel. This deck is a shallow mount that makes room for all the RCA cables to run to the amps. I don't need CDs, so I don't need full depth. I like Pioneer controls and systems as compared to other entry level decks. And expensive decks I've had don't really add to my music experience. That and they get my truck broken into. [ A  Feb 20, 2018 ]
Read good reviews about this and would like to try it out. [ Christian  Feb 17, 2018 ]
NEEDED A NEW RADIO WITH LOTS OF OPTIONS [ JOHN JOHN  Feb 11, 2018 ]
Love the lack of a CD player. The smaller size makes it an easy installation. [ Clark  Jan 23, 2018 ]
I don't need a CD player and I liked the fact that this unit is less than 4 inches in depth, the installation area in the custom vehicle it is being installed into has limited depth behind the dash. This unit will fit perfect, and lets face it, its Pioneer. [ Joseph  Jan 21, 2018 ]
    1. I prefer pioneer headunits 2. I like the fact its 3 RCA outputs at 4 volts 3. I haven't used a CD in at least ten years [ AVERY  Jan 18, 2018 ]
I have one in another car and like it. [ Toby  Jan 15, 2018 ]
    Can have red buttons and bluetooth [ A  Jan 01, 2018 ]
I have installed many Pioneer units and they have always sounded great. This one had the best bank for the buck and great reviews. Who plays CDs in 2018? This unit is much shorter than a CD unit and that should make the installation easier. [ William  Dec 17, 2017 ]
Recommendation from Jenny, my advisor to go in my wife's 1976 MGB. [ David  Dec 06, 2017 ]

Your battery on your truck might be running alittle low causing it to surge alittle bit. That will cause the radio to factory reset usually resetting the clock. Just an idea. [ Jack  Jan 11, 2019 ]
You need to have the Yellow wire on the power connector connected to +12V constant supply. Sounds like it is connected to a switched power source currently. [ Ronald  Jan 11, 2019 ]
It sounds like you have a wiring problem. There are 2 wires that require 12vdc. One is used to keep the clock. That one should have constant voltage. The other one is tied to the ignition so that when you turn the key on, it powers the radio all the way up. Scott [ Teresa  Jan 12, 2019 ]
The radio has 2 positive feeds , 1 goes to ign switch and 1 goes to 12v constant so the radio has power for memory when vehicle is off , I wanna say it's the yellow wire but not 100% check your wire diagram [ Thomas  Jan 11, 2019 ]
Radio is wired wrong [ nicholas  Jan 11, 2019 ]
You sure can use Siri for voice dialing people through this receiver! My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Paul [ Paul  Dec 20, 2018 ]  Staff
Yes I believe you can. Once my phone is hooked up with bluetooth, I can use "hey siri" and it listens. [ Jennifer  Dec 07, 2018 ]
Sure can! As long as your phone is in range to hear you and is paired it will go through the speakers. [ Cody  Dec 07, 2018 ]
I have an Android phone and can absolutely make calls with Google voice command. I would think Siri would work the same. [ Ben  Dec 07, 2018 ]
You can control all iPhone music functions, pickings songs, volume, etc., from the phone into the deck, but you have to control the deck itself - balance, etc. from the deck. [ Matt  Dec 09, 2018 ]

The ARC app does not provide control over the stereo's crossovers. When using the stereo in "Standard" mode; the crossovers do affect both the pre-amp and the speaker level outputs. When using the stereo in "Network" mode, the crossovers will only affect the pre-amp (low level) outputs. You will find this information, and more, by clicking the "Details" tab on the stereo's main webpage and scrolling down below the "Features & Specs" table. [ Ryan  Aug 30, 2018 ]  Staff
Yes. The multifunction knob is the volume. [ Michael  Mar 29, 2018 ]
Yes. When the phone call is coming through the speakers, simply turn the volume knob. [ Ben  Mar 29, 2018 ]
I dont think so. I do the same thing you do, turn up the volume on my phone to max. It seems to remember this though because the volume on the phone is on max the next time i connect [ Rafael Velez  Mar 29, 2018 ]
Could you specify what you mean by the "head unit"? I normally turn the dial, or I use the remote controller. I don't turn the volume up on my phone. [ ISABELLA V  Mar 29, 2018 ]
With bluetooth and aux-in, you always have to adjust the volume on your phone first (to, say 75%) and then use the head unit's volume control for the rest of the time. Same with any other head unit. [ Nicholas  Mar 29, 2018 ]
Yes this unit has a volume knob. [ Torrance  Mar 29, 2018 ]
Yes, on the face plate and remote. [ Daniel  Mar 29, 2018 ]

I turn my phone volume all the way up and then adjust loudness on the head unit [ John  Mar 29, 2018 ]
I always turn the media volume on my phone all the way up, after that any volume adjustments I do thru the head unit. [ Larry  Mar 29, 2018 ]
    The volume knob. [ BRANDON J  Mar 29, 2018 ]
Yes you can change the radio station with the remote but you do have to have line of sight with the receiver. I don't think it would work under the seat. [ james  Dec 10, 2017 ]
You can change the station with the remote but it does require line of sight. [ Joe  Dec 08, 2017 ]
Can't recall what functions the remote has, but it's definitely infrared and requires line of sight, or at least bouncing the signal off the seat or something. [ Nicholas  Dec 07, 2017 ]
    No it doesn't push in. [ Torrance  Oct 25, 2017 ]
No. It also functions as the menu button. [ Nicholas  Oct 23, 2017 ]

No it is used to select functions when you press it but does not retract to be flush [ Anthony  Oct 22, 2017 ]
No. The volume knob permantly sticks out as it also functions as an "enter" button. [ Kyle  Oct 22, 2017 ]
Thanks for your question. Yes, compared to many receivers which have a mounting depth of 6 to 7 inches, this one comes in at a depth of 3.845". Hope this helps. [ Kenny  Sep 11, 2017 ]  Staff
