Overview

Our take on the Pioneer TS-W311D4

Pioneer's TS-W311D4 12" subwoofer is built to take it as well as dishing it out. This Pioneer Champion Series sub features a ribbed cone that's injection-molded for exceptional precision and strength. A double-layered elastic polymer surround supports the woofer during cone excursion so you'll get accurate, hard-hitting bass notes even when the music's turned up loud. The dual 4-ohm voice coils allow you to wire the sub for 2- or 8-ohm impedance, so you get the flexibility you need to add more Champion Series subs in the future.

Add some boom to your daily drive

If your vehicle's audio system sounding a little thin,  this Pioneer sub can remedy that situation, bringing out all the punch and power in your music by filling in the lowest frequencies of the sound spectrum. Throw one or two of these subs in your daily ride, power them up with a nice amp, and you'll understand what the fuss is all about — whatever you listen to, great bass will make it sound much, much better.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 300 and 600 watts RMS at 2 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

Awesome verified response at 20Hz. Using 2 would be overkill

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my third subwoofer installation. I've been an audio hobbyist since the 60's and am a repeat customer at Crutchfield. This speaker is heavy and appears very well made. After some research on wiring options, I wired this in series to a Rockford Fosgate Power T600-2 in bridged mode. I expected to see 7-8 ohms as the effective impedance but measured between 5.9 and 6.1 ohms using an accurate multimeter. Based on this I would not recommend wiring the voice coils in parallel unless your bridged amp is stable at 1 ohm. Wiring in series will keep the amp from getting overheated. This speaker's frequency response using the Sound OrdnanceT Bass Bunker BB12-125S sealed enclosure is pretty smooth and extended. I have an audio test CD that has a frequency sweep track from 20K to 20Hz. This speaker has some real air movement at 20Hz! and the sound level does not drop off a cliff below 25Hz (like some other subwoofers). The response below 50Hz using the amp's LPF sounded very linear down to 20Hz. No rattles and no resonance peaks or valleys that I could discern. I did not have to use an equalizer for this installation. My goal with this installation was not to rattle windows or the cars next to me but to enjoy and feel really deep bass at reasonable sound levels. This speaker is awesome. Installing 2 would be overkill in my opinion. Used with: - Sound OrdnanceT Bass Bunker BB12-125S - Rockford Fosgate Power T600-2 - T-Spec 1.5 farad Capacitor - Rockford Fosgate RFK4 wirin

Pros: deep bass to 20Hz wiring flexibility heavy construction power handling

Cons: none

Features

Woofer: The Pioneer Champion series TS-W311D4 features an IMPP (Injection Molded Polypropylene) cone. This process of cone molding assures a uniform cone thickness for superior linearity and clarity. The cone is lightweight and rigid for low distortion and superior bass response.

Surround: The surround is made of dual-layer, fiber reinforced elastic polymer.

Dual 4Ω Voice Coils: This woofer features two 4Ω voice coils that offer wiring flexibility. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 2Ω load. When the voice coils are wired in series, the woofer presents an 8Ω load.

Terminals: Both sets of the woofer's spring compression binding post terminals are side-by-side for easy wiring. Each post will accept a pin connector, a single banana plug, or bare wire up to 10-gauge.

Double-stacked Magnet: The woofer uses double-stacked magnets to create a powerful magnetic force. This increases the control exerted over the voice coil and the power transferred to the cone.

Sealed Box Volume: The recommended sealed box volume is 1.25 ft³ (from 0.85 ft³ to 1.75 ft³ is acceptable).

Vented Box Volume: The recommended vented box volume is 1.5 ft³ with a 3" diameter x 6-1/2" long port (1.25 ft³ to 2.0 ft³ is acceptable).

Single Reflex Bandpass Volume: The recommended bandpass box has a sealed chamber volume of 0.56 ft³ and a ported chamber volume of 3.1 ft³, with a slot port measuring 15-3/4" x 5-7/8" x 12-3/4". Other acceptable designs keep the same sealed chamber size and the ported chamber changes to 2.8 ft³ with a 15-3/4" x 9-1/2" x 12-3/4" slot port, or 3.5 ft³ with a 10" x 2-3/8" x 21" slot port.
