All that was hoped for
Brent from Auburn, CA on 1/29/2022
1999 Mercedes-Benz C-Class
Upgraded the stock stereo head in my '99 Mercedes C280. I wanted to be able to play my MP3 collection and add bluetooth ability to the vehicle. Having the harness made life much easier (I wired it the night before). I tested all functions prior to sliding it in place, and had a moment of concern when the radio would pull in no stations (user error, I had not connected the antenna). Once connected, everything worked wonderfully. The primary functions of USB play of my MP3s worked excellent, and voice dialing (android connected with BT) wonderfully. Calls are easily audible, and callers report I sound very good on their side. Streaming (both Pandora and Spotify) worked very well, with excellent sound quality. Time will tell.
Pros: Feels like solid construction, sound is improved over the factory stock unit, display is easily readable outside of glare from sun, custom illumination is nice
Cons: It didn't install itself.

Pure Unadulterated Junk
FRANK from Salem on 12/6/2021
1998 Ford Mustang
I bought this radio 10/1/2019. Let me cut to the chase: this radio is a piece of junk. In reference to another reviewer's comment that the radio does not hold the clock memory, I also had teh problem. Then one day, I noticed that the radio turns itself off and that is when the clock memory vanishes. Connecting to my iPhone is a nuisance. I have to tell my iPhone to "forget device" and then proceed with pairing. The volume max is half the volume of my 98 Mustang GT's factory Bose radio. The display is not visible during daylight, only in low light. The reflective plastic impedes the display's visibility. I too experienced these issues while under warranty, and by the time I had decided to send the radio back, it was too late.

Better options out there
Greg from GALLATIN, TN on 9/27/2021
2001 Porsche Boxster
This unit was a disappointment. The physical installation was difficult in terms of getting the unit to fit in the dash. I found the setup more frustrating than average, at least in my experience. Menus wouldn't reliably appear during setup, then settings were lost when I needed to remove the unit to straighten the mounting bracket. I should have returned it then, but I kept at it until the return window had closed. My fault. At last, I thought it was installed and working only to find today that it seemed to lose its clock memory for no apparent reason. I bought this unit primarily for the HD radio feature, which has proved to be useless. It picked up the HD sub-stations the first day or two but now never picks them up. I'm not sure if it's worth pursuing a warranty claim. I expected better from Pioneer.
Pros: Lots of features and HD radio.
Cons: Features and HD radio don't work well.

Even though I had to wait forever for this beast to be back in stock, it was well worth it. I've learned a lot about what I've been missing all these years about sound quality! Totally happy with every aspect of it except that I didn't get it earlier in life! I still have a little tuning to go before it's perfect but the sound stage is just about there. Auto EQ and auto TA was a bit of a learning curve so anyone not familiar with it, study up a bit before you tinker too much and especially before you use network mode . but once you "get it", it's the best! For curiosity's sake my current setup is only this head unit, a pair of Focal Integration ISS 165 components and a Polk Audio DB 1042 DVC (soon to be 2 again). sounds amazing though.
Pros: Nothing but Pro's
Cons: None. Can't decide on one display color so I leave it on random.. that's not a con though :)

URBANA
David from Urbana, Ohio on 5/3/2021
I wanted a head unit to replace the BMW 'Business Class' unit on my old 3-series. It is 20 years old and the I had just replaced the worn out speakers last year, so I wanted a head unit that could do the new speakers justice. I have CDs, an iPod nano, MP3s on flashdrives, and I wanted Android phone connectivity. The clock on the Beemer's dash is broke so I wanted a clock, too. I wanted a unit that wouldn't look out of place on the dash so I wanted the display color to match the BMW's orange LEDs and they do. The DEH-X8800BHS does everything I wanted and more. I had not realized this unit comes with Auto-EQ and was pleasantly surprised that I wouldn't need to play around adjusting the balance and EQ, a process that usually takes days of fiddling around. After running the Auto-EQ I just ran through the EQ presets and found one that works within a few minutes. The EQ presets are very intuitive to use: each one has a verbal description and a graphical curve that shows you what each setting does and what you can use it for. Finding settings that work within minutes is pure gold. So far I've had no connectivity issues and the amp drives my speakers adequately: plenty of bass, mid-range, and treble. I checked it out by playing Rush and Yes. Drums, synths, guitars and bass all sound fine. The installation was difficult, but that was the car's fault not this unit. Once everything was installed it all worked as advertised. Happy with the purchase.
Pros: Display color can be adjusted to match the car's native display color. Auto Equalization feature was a pleasant surprise and it works very well. Optional wiring harness connected everything including the steering wheel controls. Plays all the sources I require. Sounds great. microphone for phone works well. Menu navigates well after a little practice.
Cons: "Fits with modification" is an understatement when installed on an E46 BMW. The head unit does fit perfectly - after you cut the locator pin bracket out of the back of the dashboard, disassemble and destroy half the BMW radio connector, and then figure out where to stuff all of the wiring harness. It was very difficult (but not impossible) to find space inside the dash for what was left of the OEM connector and the wiring/cabling. But it took hours to figure out.

NO DUAL USB!!!!!!!
Crutchfield customer from Kent, WA on 3/10/2021
2000 Ford Explorer
First and foremost. Crutchfield techs are awesome, and if you don't think you can do it on your own, they will literally help you every step of the way. This product is false advertising imho.(Pioneer, not Crutch) I paid an extra 100$ for the dual usb front and back. YOU CANNOT USE BOTH! You can use one or the other, period. The only way to switch back and forth is to do a factory reset and select one or the other from the initialize menu. So, to "use" both, you lose presets, clock, etc. or might as well hook it up with the yellow memory wire unplugged. You CAN use the alt usb for charging, but not as memory or input device. Now as I review this deck, I see on the 8th page somebody else saying the same thing about the usb. Maybe I should have scrolled past all the first 100 glowing reviews before purchasing. Buyer beware!
Pros: Service on the install, offers to make it right however they could. Good sound once hooked up.
Cons: Totally false to offer two usbs, when one can only be switched through factory reset.

Exactly what Pioneer says it is. Great sound and enough options to customize the appearance perfectly.
Pros: Plays nearly everything. Pairing iPhone was a snap. Customizing the appearance was a thing I needed because I wanted to match the color of the rest of the cluster. Perfect! Kudos to Crutchfield and their installation instructions and harness adapter. They made the install simple and without a single problem!
Cons: Nothing important. Installation was a breeze. I will say of the different display settings, there is nothing that combines with the clock - meaning you can show the time, but not in combination with anything else. Seems a bit odd, but not overly important.

It was this or a receiver flip out screen, due to not having a double din slot. Since adding one more thing to break wasn't on my list when looking for a receiver this made the logical choice. The installation kit that came along with the unit made it extremely easy to install. After installing the menu system was kind of clunky but I was able to get it were it sounded decent. The real advantage of this receive comes when you download the Pioneer ARC app. Once you get into the app you'll find all the minute to bring a smile on your face with the massaging of the time alignment and equalizer. I did pair it with a small amp which delivers enough quality sound to put the outside world in a musical place.
Pros: Pioneer ARC app Easy installation, with kit Great sound Low level outputs for front, rear and base Price Similar controls to stock unit Great options on how to listen to your stored music files, I'm actually considering getting rid of my car CD's but not yet old habits live on
Cons: Receiver controls clunky

Sound quality and features are amazing! Love being able to adjust all the settings through the app on my phone (Pioneer's "ARC" app). I find it very convenient. Love the 13-band EQ, variable Loudness, bass boost, and all the other ways to tweak the sound. Sound quality is crystal clear! I gave up a Pioneer 80PRS for this. This head unit is a more modern unit than the 80PRS, and it works much better for me. Lot of comments about how the display could be brighter. I have to agree with those comments, but the sound quality is still amazing. Very, very happy with this unit!
Pros: Excellent feature set. Excellent options to adjust sound EQ.
Cons: Display should be brighter

Front and rear USB and AUX are great! Lots of control and color options. The only minor complaint I have is that the volume knob/menu selector is a little touchy, so sometimes when I go to adjust the volume, I accidentally find myself in a menu. Issue from day one, Pioneer customer service sucks

Here is my experience from from buying this product about 3 years ago. Ruined my impression of Pioneer. Sept 2017 purchase of this unit -March 2018, finally complain to Pioneer that USB inputs rarely or never work, always an issue tech support tried to help but just stopped replying to me Figured that sucks but, then realized you can do USB firmware updates to improve functionality -January 2020, tried to update firmware with USB running since a newer version was out, radio completely went lights out and bricked itself. No blown fuses and stable power. Reached out to Pioneer again and they asked basic questions, and then just stopped replying after submitting my case histories and invoice. Crutchfield is great to deal with but Pioneer as a company is horrific customer service. And I have a dead unit on my hands.
Pros: Great when it worked with every input aside from USB devises
Cons: USB never consistently worked, tried updating firmware to fix this, it broke the whole radio and Pioneer ignores me now

Installed easily especially with Crutchfield's Ready Harness. Sounds great and has a ton of features! I love that it automatically starts playing bluetooth audio without even taking your phone out of your pocket. It also allows for control of the phone via the head unit and steering wheel controls. ARC app is cool for easy tweaking of the audio but its a little clunky with bluetooth audio. Maybe it works better for that in a wired configuration but haven't tried that yet.
Pros: High quality and highly adjustable EQ and other advanced sound settings. Lots of great media source options via bluetooth!
Cons: The bezel falls off pretty easily. ARC app is a little clunky via bluetooth.

Pandora takes control of phone
David from BEVERLY, MA on 2/3/2020
2010 Nissan Frontier SE
This unit was purchased to replace a 6 year old Kenwood that was very slow to connect by Bluetooth to my phone. This Pioneer unit connects reasonably quickly and sounds great. It is not initially very user friendly but most functions can be mastered in an hour or two. A nice feature is the Auto Equalization which helped me realize I had issues with my existing speakers. There are a few functions I encountered in the software which are not ever mentioned in the user manual and Pioneer tech support could not address. I would not buy this unit again for one reason. I listen to Pandora 90% of the time I am in my car. As soon as the Bluetooth connects and you boot Pandora the receiver takes control of your phone. All controls have to be manipulated on the receiver. Depending on the mode (Pandora vs Bluetooth) not all Pandora controls are available on the receiver. The receiver puts up a black display with the words "Pioneer" and "Pandora on your phone and there is no way to get rid of it. After 45 minutes of valiant attempts by Mike at Crutchfield and 20 minutes of very poor support on the phone with Pioneer, Pioneer stated that this is how the unit works. You can not control Pandora from your phone. This is true in "Pandora" mode, BT Audio mode, and USB direct connect. You can not turn off the Pandora function but oddly you can disable Spotify. I did try and use the Pioneer app without success. I will be returning this and buying a different brand.
Pros: Great sound
Cons: Not very user friendly initially and limited configuration options for different sources.

Jody from Gainesville, Florida on 1/26/2020
I received this Pioneer DEH-X8800BHS to replace a Pioneer KEH-P8200 Super Tuner (display went out) I got from Crutchfield 25 years ago! The set up in my truck (1993 C1500 ext. cab) I still have the Precision Power amps that powered the Infinity Kappa plates (replaced with Infinity reference 4yrs ago) and (4) 8" Kicker subs. (still kickin'). This new head unit is so adjustable I was able to remove the old electronic crossover. It sounds so much clearer, I am very happy. The Pioneer ARC app is kind of clunky at first, but the directions on the app are clearer than the owners manual as far as tuning the radio and app access. The Bluetooth syncs right up every time, the app plays my music folder anytime which is nice, but to access the radio functions with the app you have to push and hold the volume button for a second to let it know. Tuning the equalizer and other items are so much easier through the app! Once you get used to it (like anything else) it's seamless. Also the app controls google maps, (Pandora etc.) so it's hands free through your radio, but no music at the same time. So far nobody can tell that I'm on a hands free device when talking on the phone either. I will say I read some of the reviews and was hesitant, but being a Pioneer fan for a lot of years I tried it. The unit did have an issue, sometimes by touching a station preset it would turn off. Crutchfield was awesome about it, and had the new one in 2 days. No issues since, and still no regrets.
Pros: Sounds great, very adjustable, versatile, RCA outputs for front, rear and sub. Can adjust every speaker individually. My radio is in direct sunlight and can see the display fine. Set the display colors to match 90's GM dash lights. No complaints from callers about sound quality.
Cons: The radio and App take some learning and getting used too, but once you do it's fine.

Sounds great, easy install
Michael from Elkmont, AL on 10/2/2019
1999 Dodge Ram 1500
I'm the original owner of a '99 Dodge Ram with the factory AM/FM/CD Cassette Infinity system, with obviously no BT, HD, etc. capabilities. I wanted an install that didn't require dash modification, & after much research, reading countless reviews, & consultation with Artie at Crutchfield, decided on this Pioneer. Removing the original radio (using Crutchfield supplied guidance & Youtube) was fairly straightforward, as was the installation. Just be sure to install the BT microphone cord before installing the radio. The guidance doesn't mention it, so I had the radio installed before realizing that I hadn't plugged in the BT mic. Also, if you're going to use the rear USB port, ensure that you plug it in, as it would be impossible to do after the radio is installed. The radio is loaded with options. It's easy to customize illumination, sound settings, pre-sets, etc., and once you make a couple of changes, the controls are fairly intuitive. I just completed the install today & so far have tested the HD radio, BT phone calls, & Pandora controls & play. All worked flawlessly. Some reviews mentioned problems with Pandora information not showing up on the display. I had no issues. The only con is that after taking the time to install the radio & establish sound preferences, I realized that it's time for new speakers. I think this was my sixth stereo from Crutchfield since about 1991, & based on their service & prices, I'll be buying my speakers from Crutchfield.
Pros: Perfect fit, no dash modification required Easily customizable BT CD HD radio Pandora USB
Cons: Why is everything glossy black? It's not that big of a deal, but matte is much better for hiding fingerprints, dust, etc. Maybe I can plastisol the radio trim bezel . . .

I just installed this last week so I haven't had a lot of time to enjoy it but those first few minutes were enough to confirm I'd made the right choice. I'd already upgraded the speakers so this was the final step, this new Pioneer head unit really woke them up and the sound is amazing. I ran the setup process to optimize the EQ and did some tweaking with tone settings, very happy with the results. I gained Bluetooth connection for my phone, high power and I've found that HD radio sounds great. What more could I want ... maybe a compact powered subwoofer, the connections are already available. Love the flexibility I now have!
Pros: Great connectivity options, high power output, auto EQ setup was easy, enough features to want to read the manual and take full advantage of the many capabilities, Bluetooth connection and HD radio

I replaced a Kenwood Excelon with this Pioneer. I'm very pleased with the features and ease of use. It seems this Pioneer is an upgrade but it cost me $80 less! The display is much brighter and easier to see. The HD tuner is much more sensitive and there are 6 preset buttons instead of having to go into a menu to search for a station. My Android pairs up much quicker and easier when listening to Pandora. The power is not as high as the Kenwood but it's a non issue with a subwoofer. Save your money and get the Pioneer.

Brad from Wichita, KS on 4/10/2019

This is my first purchase of a Pioneer deck. Usually have gone with Kenwood. This might also be my last purchase of a Pioneer unit. The sound is okay but not on par with Kenwood decks I've used in the past. The features are really nice but I think the firmware is full of bugs and no updates have happened after a full year. The unit will switch to phone (auto answer) continually and you have to back out of it to even adjust volume. It will even change stations occasionally when you meet up and pass a large truck on the highway. Frustrated having to reset adjustments and am ready to just replace the unit now.
Pros: Decent sound and features.
Cons: Glitchy firmware makes the unit frustrating to use.

I have owned many different brands of car stereos. The sound quality from this receiver is far superior to anything else I have owned. The interface is very user friendly. Huge selection of sound adjustments that aren't to complicated for a novice or rookie to fine tune to there liking. I've had 4 other brand receivers in the same class as this one hooked to my subwoofer amp. I haven't touched my amp gain since I originally installed the system until I got this deck. My amp output to my subs doubled. Before it was producing 500 watts on a 3.7 ohm load with the gain set to 6 or half way. Now it produces the same output set to 3 and pounding harder and crisper than they ever did before. I have 2 Rockford 12" p1's and a Rockford punch 1000db. The Pioneer is powering two pair of 6.5"component mids and highs and a pair of 6"×8" two way speakers in the back. I have had it as loud as I can bear. Trust me it's very loud. Zero distortion and still has plenty of power to spare. And Çrutchfield makes the job easy!

Best car stereo I've ever had, and I've had a lot. Sound, without any external amps, makes the same speakers my old Kenwood was pushing sound like a new system. HD radio lets me hear stations none of my friends can get on their factory rides. BT interfaces with my phone calls and Spotify nearly 100% of the time without any hassle. Phone call quality gexellent in both ends. Only complaint: hard to see in day time.
Pros: Great audio Great phone sound and BT interface Great HD radio reception

This is a great radio! I purchased this for my son's 2001 Ranger. He bluetooths it to his samsung s7 phone. He mainly uses Pandora and Spotify. I wanted him to have hands free phone usage, he wanted a louder and better stereo. We mounted the Microphone in the "cubby hole" of the dash installation kit, (FMK-550)and it works great. We also purchased new rockford fosgate 3 way speakers(P1683) for all 4 factory speakers. It actually sounds good and even when it's loud it doesn't distort the sound. I / We are very happy with this set up. Crutchfield has always been good to deal with, and have always had fair pricing including the needed additional accessories. I would definitely recommend this radio.
Pros: Handsfree operation (including phone calls) Great sound Pandora and Spotify Control
Cons: None yet, been installed for 1 week.

The printed generic instructions were great as far as they went but my 2004 SLK factory wiring presented identification and compatability issues above my pay grade. All the settings did an auto scroll without being able to stop it. the radio, XM, and USB Ipod setting all did the same thing. I returned this receiver and the second one I received did the same thing a day later. as well as the USB ports front and rear did not work on the second receiver. I also think the display is not bright enough. during the day it is very hard to see at max brightness. My wife is very picky when it comes to her car - has to flow, be intuitive, and enhance. Well this radio did it all for her 2007 BMW 3281. I must have drove the chat person to drink - with "this is this" -- "this is that". But he hung in there with me. My wife loves the appearance and the quality of the radio. The face plate was especially handsome. She now enjoys "HD" radio, and talking on the phone via the speakers. I must ask ya'll, with what Crutchfield provides why even think pf purchasing elsewhere? Not me, I have learned that Crutchfield is the only way to go. Great service; great help; very fast on refunds.

I love this Head Unit. I've been looking for one that will allow me to start my car audio system. I've spent a lot of time looking and reading about head units. This Has all of the specs I've been looking for. My stock speakers sounded okay with the original head unit, however, when I installed this head unit I had no idea that those same speakers would sound so nice. I still plan on switching them out and powering them with amps but this sounds nice for now. I do see complaints about the light glare but since I use Bluetooth, it doesn't bother me because everything comes from my phone. Definitely a good head unit for the cost. Crutchfield is also very helpful with any installation questions I've had.
Pros: Great output, easy installation, and many features.
Cons: Brightness of lights in sunny areas.

Great stereo. HD FM stations are crystal clear. sounds much better than original. I opted for Crutchfield to wire the harness for me and it made the install quick. Crutchfield install instructions are great. The instruction said, you have to cut the metal bracket in the back of the dash for clearance. I did not have to do any cutting with this unit. I completed my install in less than 40 minutes, due to the prewiring of the harness. All of the additional install items required for the install by Crutchfield, wiring harness, steering wheel control harness, dash adapter, etc. were correct. Crutchfield makes it easy. Display can be hard to read in sunlight as noted by other reviewers. Only annoying thing is radio does not always resume when ignition is turned on. 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee
I installed this as replacement on a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Installation was smooth and using Metra ASWC-1 I was able to use the steering wheel controls as well. This unit is loaded with tons of features (plan time to read the manual) and features HD Radio, which was a big thing I was looking for. I replaced the in-dash tweeters at the same time, and was pleasantly surprised by the sound quality from the stereo. It includes an external mic to calibrate your system to get the best sounds quality and it does an admirable job. I did a little tweaking on the EQ to get it to my liking, but other than the new tweeters, all the other speakers were the 20 year old factory Infinitys, so I was very happy. Installation took a total of a couple of hours. If you use the Metra ASWC-1, you will have to splice a couple of wires to make it work, but the Crutchfield tech helped me figure it out and it took all of 5 minutes and it was up and running. Overall, an outstanding unit. Display is not as bright as I'd like and the pixelation is a little annoying to me, but that is pretty standard on 1 DIN units.
Pros: Lots of features, great sound, easy installation
Cons: Pixelation on display, hard to read in daytime

Very easy install. At first I thought it was amazing. Eq settings, filters, the whole 9. I've only had it for a week or so and already have an issue with the display. For whatever reason the unit will start beeping and flashing randomly while I'm listenint to fm, or my rear usb iPod. I will no longer be able to see the volume (it shows the speaker performance icons) though the volume will still adjust...and I can no longer scroll through the menu and the settings. If I could upload a video of this, I would. I end up having to pop out the face peice over and over again or shut the car off for a few mins before it decides to work again. May work for 5 mins, may work for a day. Then it goes back to freeze mode. Very frustrating for a high end brand valued at this price. I searched online looking for solutions, and checked all my connections. Have found nothing relating to this issue. The stock head unit on my 2008 cobalt was so much more Convenient to use and didn't cost me this much.

Crutchfield customer from Chesterton, IN on 4/10/2018
1987 Pontiac Fiero
Crutchfield's customer service was great, shipping was fast and everything needed for the install was included. The DEH-X8800BHS itself is loaded with features and is very nice looking. I like that it is somewhat understated and very simple and clean looking. I bought this unit to replace an old Nakamichi unit that was very nice in its day but by today's standards was lacking some convenience features like bluetooth and USB support. The 6 channel 4 volt pre-outs were a selling point for me, as I am running a 5 channel amp with my system. While I am not an audiofile, the auto EQ and time alignment seemed to make very noticeable changes to the sound and improve the staging. There are infinite colors for the display which is nice, so you can tweak it any way you would like to match the factory displays of your car, or whatever your personal preference may be. As for the people that have complained about brightness, use some common sense, evaluate the contour of your dash and the angle that the radio faces before you go saying that it's not bright enough. Bluetooth paired easily and was easy to use. My personal preference is to use a USB drive though, it's like having a juke box in your dash, the music starts right where it left off. The Pioneer arc app takes a little messing around to get working right through bluetooth, but once you get it figured out it seems to work well and it's pretty cool that you can adjust all of the head units settings through an app on
Pros: -Clean and simple looking -6 Channel 4 volt pre-outs -Standard and network mode (changes your pre-outs from front, rear, sub to highs, mids, lows) -Infinite color display -Bluetooth and USB both very easy to use -Auto EQ and Time alignment
Cons: -Takes a little playing around to get use to which menu the setting you are looking for is found -Pioneer Arc app is a little tricky to sync through at first

The main reason that I bought this player was because it could play FLAC files through the USB input....and it does! But, that's not all. It sounded head-and-shoulders better than my previous player which was no slouch. This player also has TONS of EQing options to tune your car to your liking.

Very good head unit
ShoppingB from Massachusetts on 2/28/2018

Quick summary: Sounds fantastic. Easy install. Auto time alignment is great. Auto EQ was less so but manual EQ and xover is highly adjustable. The setup menu and controls are impossible to use without the instructions open in front of you. Buttons are tiny (why do they do this?), multipurpose, and confusing. Many display colors to match your interior. No display color except white is visible in sunlight. The ARC app crashes all the time and is very limited in functionality. Great connectivity to: Bluetooth anything, plus Android, iOS, and flash via the USB ports. (BTW I am having no trouble using my Gen 4 iPod Classic on the rear port, contrary to another reviewer's experience) HD Radio works very well - excellent sound, sensitivity, and selectivity. So nothing unexpected here for Pioneer fans: Excellent hardware, puzzling interface, buggy software. While I wish these issues were corrected, the problems disappear when everything is finally configured and working. If no one does a better interface I would definitely buy this unit again. The time alignment and equalization are absolutely phenomenal - like wearing headphones. And the unit is highly configurable - it's always difficult to find the menu function you want, but it's in there somewhere. (My setup is front 2-way component (4")speakers, rear 6.75 3 way coaxial, 200w powered 12" sub, and 2x90 watt/channel speaker amps.)
Pros: Sound and stereo imaging Configurability Input sources
Cons: Controls and interface ARC app

I bought this unit. I read all of the reviews, and decided I can deal with most of the cons, of this unit. I have had to swap out 2 units, and are about to swap out the third one. The head unit switches sources, by itself. For instance, I can be on a Bluetooth phone call and the head unit will switch to the radio, during the call. I push the phone icon and it will go back to my call. It will do it again. Back to the radio or Bluetooth music. I can be just riding down the highway and the source will switch by itself to the phone app, or another source. Crutchfield has been great sending me new radios, to replace the current ones. All of them have the same symptoms. I believe it is just this lot of 8800's. I bought a Pioneer, from Crutchfield before and had years of great radio. I have a different vehicle now that is why I am buying a new radio.
Pros: Good sound
Cons: display is not bright enough, and it changes sources by itself.

Nice unit - so far, so good!
Kent from Anchorage, AK on 2/18/2018
2007 Dodge Ram 2500
I got this unit to replace the factory radio (4 speaker system) in my 2007 Dodge Ram. Install was very straightforward. I ordered the prefab Crutchfield harness. I did have to call Crutchfield to ask about a plug in the vehicle wiring that was plugged into the factory radio, but had no spot in the new wiring harness. They were able to tell me immediately that it isn't used for this unit. Also, the harness came with a small black box wired in. Nothing like that in the factory harness. Apparently it is needed to provide constant current to the unit. Was a little confusing until I talked to them. The whole installation took about 2-1/2 hours. Would be much faster the second time around - it isn't difficult. Very nice fit in the dash. I bought this primarily so I could Bluetooth my iPhone, as well as stream music. So far, so good. It will even do voice dialing through Siri, by pushing a button on the head unit. Phone audio quality is good, both sending and receiving. The sound is very good - much better than the factory radio. Lots of adjustment. So far, the display is easy to read on a bright sunny day with snow on the ground. It pairs readily with my phone. Haven't tried with a second phone.
Pros: Easy install. Love the Bluetooth phone capability. Great sound for the price point. Good display. Solid 4.5 stars!
Cons: Would be nice to have a little better description of the wiring harness. I had to call a couple times to make sure I wasn't missing something during installation.

Had the unit but retuned it due to the description did not say that the rear USB does not work with iProducts at all. Since then I talked to Pioneer and Crutchfield and that has been updated so not the unit for my needs. Pain in the but installing and to take it out and send it back for errors from Pioneer to list that... Not the best manual. However it still sounded great! I had no problems with the screen display at all. I wonder if people have angled dashes or the sunroof open? Even then I can still read it with the glair from my windows. Maybe get window tint if its a problem? Blutooth was easy to use. It was a good unit so wanted to leave the review. I ended up with a Kenwood KDC-x501
Pros: Sounded good
Cons: Bad manual on Pioneer. Had nothing about the rear port being only for Android so shame on them seeing they make dj stuff you would think to fix that.

Outstanding performance in a challenging installation. I installed this in a 2003 Miata with Bose Amplifiers. Great job Crutchfield! This unit has all the features I wanted: seamless Bluetooth, HD radio and easy to integrate XM.

Very happy with the result
Kevin from Franklin, IN on 1/3/2018
I purchased this unit to replace the previous aftermarket head unit that developed tuner problems. I must say that even though this unit is much less expensive than the one it replaced, I am very impressed with it's performance. The FM front end is quite sensitive and seems to have a great ability to lock onto stations, even in HD. The presets are easy to set as well as use and there are plenty of them. The auto EQ generated an EQ/time delay/level set that greatly improved the sound of the rest of my system and I am very pleased with the result. It's kinda fun to hear the thing in action too. It makes an bunch of clicking and frequency sweep noises while you stand outside the car listening. It works well. I also like the three levels of loudness compensation that provides a lot of flexibility. The hands-free connection works flawlessly with my Android phone. I can hear and be heard quite well and the voice recognition works pretty well too. I've never been impressed with the sound of MP3s played over a bluetooth connection but the ASR Pioneer has implemented here really does make that format much more listenable. The downsides: the display can get a bit washed out in bright sunlight depending on your color choice (and there are many) and I still haven't figured out how to get the rear USB port to work. I have a USB port in my dash and while the DEH-X8800BHS is connected to it, It doesn't seem to recognize anything I connect to it. All in all a really nice unit!
Pros: Great sound, Very flexible, Really good value
Cons: Display can be washed out in bright sunlight, Still haven't gotten the rear USB port functioning.

2006 Nissan Sentra
I recently installed this unit on my 2006 Nissan Sentra Special Edition. This unit has many customizing features, from the equalizer to time alignment and allowing the microphone to do the time alignment for you which is what I did and I must say it works very well. My bluetooth android phone connects flawlessly to this unit, spotify and pandora work great. I dont have to look at my phone to select my music; and the navigation will also play when in the pandora or spotify source. I have yet to try the Pioneer ARC app but honestly with all the features this already has I personally wouldn't be using it much. I have a 128GB thumb drive with a ton of music. I will say that it does take a while for it to initially connect but once it does I have not encountered any issues whatsoever. HD radio works very well and I love that the face of this unit has preset buttons, my old radio had no hard preset buttons. Keep in mind that this unit will ONLY ALLOW ONE USB TO BE USED FOR MUSIC AT A TIME! Yes, it has 2 usb inputs but only one can be active, the other can only be used for charging. You can always switch which usb you want active (the front or the rear) in the menu, but you iphone users you will be disappointed because the iphone must be connected via usb in order to use the all the spoitify and pandora features. Overall a good radio and a great radio for android users.
Pros: Great sound, loads of features, very easy menu to navigate.
Cons: Only one active usb at a time.

Received the deck and found that it didn't come with any installation instructions. It stated in the owner's manual that you should not try to install this yourself, but have a professional install it. Luckily, I've done enough decks so it wasn't a problem. I like this way better than my Premier. It's way easier to get set up. With the Premier, I never did figure out how to get the presets set. I did once, and then forgot how I did it. This has the old school one touch button presets on it which I like. Some complained about the brightness of the screen in the daylight, but I thought the brightness was just fine. The other problem is they were to send a car-specific wiring harness between the car and the radio, and that never came, but I was replacing a deck where the wires were already cut so no big deal. This sounds great with no amp, although I noticed the gauge of wire was considerably smaller than the Premier wiring harness. It didn't seem to make any difference in sound quality though.

I haven't spent as much time with the receiver as a I would have liked by now (wife drives the car more often than I) but overall it's very good. It has a strong radio tuner, good sound quality, and lots of audio settings. I love the fact that it has a 3-way network mode, which I'll be utilizing for my front stage once I pick up an amp for the Focal 165KR set. I would like to complain about the screen not being bright enough, though. It's completely unreadable mid-day with the sun out, and don't even think about seeing it with sunglasses. Also, the reaction time for changing tracks on my iPhone (wired) is very slow, like a full-second delay from pressing next to it actually changing. This happens when using the physical buttons on the faceplate, the steering wheel controls, or even the supplied remote. One particular bummer for my car (2007 Honda Civic Si) is that Honda likes to put their clocks in the radios, so you'll lose it when switching to an aftermarket. While this receiver does have a clock function, you won't see anything else at all when it's displayed, such as the iPod track information or Radio Data System (RDS) information.
Pros: Strong tuner, good sound, lots of audio settings, 3-way network mode
Cons: Dim screen (even on max brightness), slow reaction for changing tracks, clock display overrides all the rest of the displays

Great radio/CD/Sirius/BT/etc. Unit!
John from TX on 7/28/2017
I purchased this receiver after looking hard at all of the other radios being offered at Crutchfield - and elsewhere. I installed it in a 2002 National RV Sea Breeze Class A motorhome; while the vehicle is 15 years old, the previous owners seldom used it (15,800 miles when we bought it) and it is in very good condition. It had what was once a very nice CD/radio, but it didn't have Sirius or Bluetooth. Installation was pretty easy - no install kit required - since the wiring between the Prestige P-950 and the Pioneer were color matched. The Sirius installation was interesting, too - but I'll review that unit separately. How does it sound? Wonderful! How is the HD radio reception? Great in town; I haven't taken the rig on the road yet. (My wife and a friend are at a bead retreat in Shreveport this weekend, so she can tell me what she thinks when she gets home in a few days.) The hands-free works great, too - although the cavernous motorhome does cause some echo for callers on the other end. Would I buy it again? Absolutely!
Pros: Sound, versatility, quality
Cons: None so far!

Love this receiver! My previous car had the Pioneer DEH-X9600BHS and I definitely prefer this one. It is nice to have physical preset radio station buttons and the volume wheel feels much more sturdy. Gave my stock Corolla speakers a little more life and the RCA pre-amp outputs will be nice for when I choose to upgrade to new speakers. I have noticed that other reviews claim the screen is unreadable during the day. I agree that it could probably be a little bit brighter, but it is definitely still readable. There is a brightness setting you can adjust in the illumination settings. All in all, a great receiver!

Cannot beat the features and performance for the price.
Stan from Lake Forest, IL on 7/20/2017
So I traded in the Pioneer DEH-X8700BS for this model. Its basically the same model just one year newer. The main thing that I didnt like about the old Pioneer is that it had no physical preset buttons. I dont mind that on a large touch screen but not on a small area. Anyway onto the review of this radio. It has all the best things of the old one plus a few more. The sound quality is great, and to be honest I know many said its hard to tune (which it may be for someone who is used to just Bass and Treble), but compared to the outgoing model the menu structure is much better, and the ARC makes tuning and changing settings very easy, at least on the iphone. I will say that as others have said the display can get a little sun washed but I am putting it in a restored car which lights are dimmer so to me it blends very well. I would give it 5 stars the only thing that took one away is some of the settings are cryptic and if you not technical it could be challenging. Overall I really like this stereo, sound quality is great, I have all 3 preout sets going a 5 channel amp driving front and rear components and a 10" sub so I cannot comment on how it sounds driving speakers directly from the headunit. I dont think you will be sorry with this purchase.
Pros: Great features Good Sound quality Infinite color display to match any interior Multiple connection possibilities ARC App
Cons: The controls can be a bit complex for the average user

Jake from Galesburg, IL on 7/9/2017

If you're looking for a head unit that is simple to use and easy to see, this is not the unit for you. Even when the color is set to white, its barely visible during the day, if visible at all. Gets frustrating. It is loaded with TONS of features. Some, in my opinion are great like the dual USB ports, bluetooth connection, included hands free equipment, spotify and pandora control, HD radio, etc. Some just complicate things like the eq, crossover, etc. I'm old school, I prefer a simple head unit with a separate eq. To me, it's just simpler to use. With the eq, crossover, etc built into this unit.. It's nice but can be a pain at the same time. Over all, if I had to do it over again, I would have bought something else. Then again, I'm not so upset with my choice that I complain too much. My overall opinion of this unit is stuck between love and hate. I would say the biggest downfall is the brightness, or lack of, of the display.
Pros: Lots of features. App compatible. Bluetooth ready. Hands free ready. Dual USB ports. Great sound, once set to your liking.
Cons: Built in sound adjustments get complicated at times/tricky to get sounding just right. Display is rarely visible during the day time, even set to white. Real frustrating!

Misleading feature set & other issues
Rick from Wilsonville, OR on 6/19/2017
1993 Ford F Series
Pretty disappointed in a few of things. First off, I am very comfortable with Pioneer products and it delivers their predictable great sound. There are a couple of things that are pretty hard to get past, however, & I will probably be returning it. First is the USB issue. The product description states that there are 2 USB inputs and that is true, but it fails to tell you that you can only use 1 at a time. You have to choose which USB is active in the initial set up & then the other one can only act as a charging port. This is super disappointing as 2 USB was my primary reason to choose this unit. Second is that once you choose Bluetooth to sync up to your phone, you can't run an iPod separately as a source. It will only sync up to one Apple device at a time without having to go into the menu settings and changing the source. Since trying to use this unit without ARC is very difficult due to the 3rd issue, this sucks! Third issue. For some reason, the combination of a VERY dim display, coupled with unbearable glare on the front makes this unit completely unreadable. I don't really care about that for music info as it is a single line display but for using the menu, it is horrible. I have tried a number of things but the curved glass & the angle of my dash make this a real problem.
Pros: *Great Pioneer sound
Cons: *Two USB inputs but only one is usable at a time. The other is disabled except for charging *Very dim display that is difficult to read during the day *Horrible glare on the face making the above issue worse *Only 1 Apple device can be synced at a time, this makes using an iPod & ARC control on my phone a no-go.

Supports HD Audio FLAC up to 24B/96K, Nice App
Gary from Katy, TX on 5/31/2017
1997 Toyota Supra
The DEH-X8800BHS supports HD Audio FLAC up to 24B/96K which allows me to play 99.9% of what I have. I have so few 24B/192K files so it's not a huge issue for me. The App allows easy access to many functions that are buried in a menu in the unit. The sound quality is as good as previous Pioneer units, which has been fantastic for me in the car. Bluetooth phone calls work great and sound clear. If Pioneer upgrades the display and adds Gapless audio playback on a future unit I would consider that unit but until then I'm sticking with this one. It's not a perfect unit, maybe one step back on display but two steps forward with improved audio and app integration.
Pros: Supports HD Audio FLAC up to 24B/96K. The Android App allows easy access to many functions that are buried in a menu in the unit. Bluetooth phone calls work great and are clear.
Cons: No Gapless Audio playback! The display isn't quite as useful as previous DEH-X8700BH. That unit had a little time gauge which let you know how long the song was and where you were in it. Also it displayed sample rates of FLAC files which was nice to see. Directions to make the App work are poor.

It did not fit in the 2002 Toyota 4runner because the rca plugs are on the opposite side compared to other head units out there. You might need a right angle rca adapter. Even with the adapters it's still annoying because of the connector spacing and chassis design. The aux input makes a ringing sound when nothing is connected to it. It goes away when you connect a phone to it. The sound quality without any sound processing is comparable to other head units.

As advertised! Decent power, lots of features, good bluetooth connectivity. So many features, though, it's a little hard to get around all of them. Figure it out before you start driving. The manual is not very well written, though. Obviously translated and not well proofread by native speaker. Also, the microphone setup routine does a pretty good job of setting the basic tone controls, and you can tweak from there. Recommended installation parts made the installation pretty seamless. The master sheet is a little thin on how to actually disassemble the dash for my 325i, but there's lots of online videos for that. Also, Crutchfield's phone support was helpful to figure out the wiring harness.

It's as good as I need. The wiring instructions for the novice is poorly laid out. Took a while to see what they were trying to tell me. Still trying to figure out half the settings. Hope you have some time to kill.
Pros: Good quality Pioneer product.
Cons: Over my head with all the bells and whistles but I needed HD radio and Bluetooth.

Great stereo except for the display. In the light of day, the display is hard to read. Functions are great and Bluetooth connects quickly. Stereo power is great and drives the kicker speakers with authority. I used the installation sleeve and that made the install easy.
Pros: Sound, functions and power
Cons: Display brightness.
