Style up your dash and your music at the same time with Panasonic's MXE CQ-C3401U CD receiver. Its sleek, black face features a rotary knob for easy adjustments and, thanks to the flip-down faceplate design, you get a nice big, high-resolution display that offers day and night visibility for all system info.

The CQ-C3401 handles burned CD-R and CD-RW discs along with standard CDs. And MP3 and WMA playback gives you the flexibility of an in-dash jukebox that can store hours and hours of music on a single disc. You can contour that output to fit your style with the 2-band equalizer. Three sets of preamp outputs allow you to connect your external amp for easy system-building. Fire up the low-pass filter when you're ready to dial in clean, clear bass.

Want more options for your entertainment? On-board XM satellite radio controls can put over 120 channels of music, news, entertainment, and sports at your fingertips (XM Radio subscription, tuner, antenna required to receive the satellite radio signal).

I bought this deck because I liked the price and thought it would look good in my pickup and it does. The sound is good and isn't "tinny". Every review I've read on this deck says that it is impossible to read the display during the day and that is so true. Otherwise this is a great deck for the dollar...

Better in the dark

This is a good unit for the price. It does do everything that it is advertised to do. When used with XM the display does not scroll and is so small it is often hard to tell the title or the artist of a song. However, this really will not matter unless you do most of your driving at night. The display is almost impossible to see during daylight hours! Much too dim.

I bought this receiver as a birthday gift to my son. I never had installed a car stereo before, but the Crutchfield rep told me I could do it. I must say that it was easier than I thought it would be. He set me up with everything that I needed to install it, and at a price that was $150 less than what a well-known electronics store was offering...even with their "free" installation. I really like this receiver, and more importantly, my 18 year old son loves it. Even with the factory speakers, it has a great sound. We live on a dirt road and it has never skipped once. I'd have to agree with the other person who reviewed this Panasonic that the display is too dim to see in the daylight. This would be the only drawback to the unit. If you are looking for a system that won't make you go broke, I highly recommend this one. But whatever unit you decide on, do yourself a favor and buy from Crutchfield. They helped me,(yes me) install a receiver that kicks butt.

Great sound but...

This unit was recommended to me by Crutchfield. It does three things I wanted - Great sound, easy to use and plays MP3's. The sound is really great, and it easily plays MP3's. Its sound quality (at the price) makes it a 5 star unit. But... It loses one star during installation. It did not really fit my Honda CRV. Oh, it fit the empty slot, but it did not line up with the factory side braces at all. A call to Crutchfield said it did not need any side support, which is a bit silly since there is NO other support. Not wanting the thin plastic trim to try and hold the unit I had to drill two new holes. It loses another star for having a very, very, very dim display. Even when holding you hand over it to block out any light, it is still too dim, dim, dim.

Features

MP3/WMA Compatible: The Panasonic MXE CQ-C3401U can play MP3 and WMA files recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs in ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Apple Extension to ISO 9660, Joliet, and Romeo. The player can support up to 999 files, 255 files in one folder, 8 levels, and 255 folders. During MP3/WMA playback, you can switch the display between Folder #/File #, File Elapsed time, Folder Name, File Name, and Source Name/Clock.

XM Satellite Ready: You can receive XM Satellite Radio by connecting the optional Terk XMD1000 XM Direct receiver (206XMD1000) and the XM Direct Smart Adapter for Panasonic (206XMDPAN1). A subscription to XM Satellite Radio is required to receive the over 130 channels of digital-quality programming.

Fold-Down Face: The CQ-C3401U features a fold-down detachable face with a large bright display. The face folds down to allow you to insert a CD. The disc eject button is also behind the fold-down face. When the face is removed, a red LED blinks on the front panel of the radio. In addition, a faceplate removal alarm sounds to warn you to remove the faceplate before leaving your car. The security indicator and alarm can be deactivated. A hard plastic face case is supplied for carrying your detached faceplate.

Level Meter: The display features a one-line level meter at the bottom of the display. You can select one of four patterns or turn the level meter off.

CD Text: The unit will display CD Text information when encoded onto CDs. During CD play, the display can be switched between Track #/Elapsed Time, Disc Title, Track Title, and Source Name/Clock.

CD Changer Controls: The CQ-C3401U has controls for a compatible Panasonic CD changer, such as the CX-DP880. CD Changer functions include: Disc Skip, Direct Disc Select (remote only), Track Skip, Track Search (FF/RW), Disc Intro Scan, Track Intro Scan, Disc repeat, Track repeat, Disc random and Track random.

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Panasonic for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

Subwoofer Output: In addition to front and rear preamp outputs, the receiver has a non-fading, two-channel subwoofer output. You can adjust the volume of the subwoofer output from -6dB to +6dB in 2dB increments.

Sound Quality (SQ): In addition to the bass and treble adjustments (+/- 12dB @ 100 Hz and 10kHz), the unit's Sound Quality function allows you to apply various sound adjustments at the touch of a button in accordance with your musical tastes. There are four SQ settings:

  • SQ-Rock: speedy and heavy sound; exaggerates bass and treble
  • SQ-Pop: wide-ranged and deep sound; slightly emphasizes bass and treble
  • SQ-Vocal: clear sound; emphasizes middle tone and slightly emphasizes treble
  • SQ-Flat: flat frequency response; no emphasis applied

Mute/Attenuate: This unit allows you to choose between mute (volume at 0) or attenuate (volume decreased by 10 steps) when you want to decrease the volume instantly. After selecting mute or attenuate in the menu, pressing the Mute button activates either function and the Mute indicator light glows in the display.

Alphatuner V: The CQ-C3401U's Alphatuner V tuner is designed to help suppress multi-path distortion and reduce the problem of radio signal reflections in metropolitan areas. It also features increased sensitivity for weak signal areas.

Remote Control: The CQ-C3401U is equipped with a wireless remote control (EUR7641010). The dimensions of the remote are: W=1.64", H=0.664", L=3.762". The remote is powered by a CR2025 lithium battery (supplied).

Display Note: Pressing and holding the Source button turns the unit off completely. After the unit has been turned off, you can use the DISP button to switch the clock display and face/button illumination on and off. If you leave the clock display and face/button illumination on, they are "keyed". If you turn the clock display and face/button illumination off, they only turn on when the unit is turned on ("unit on" operation).
