About the JL Audio 13TW5v2-2

JL Audio Built In USA Fit huge bass into tight spaces

You can get great-sounding, big bass in your sports car, truck, or any other compact vehicle. JL Audio rises to the challenge of compact spaces with their TW5 thin-line subwoofers. Engineered for use in extremely small boxes, these subs fit in places where only 6-1/2" or 8" subs would previously go, for astoundingly deep, resonant bass without the large enclosure.

Side

This sub can fit places many subs can't.

A super-thin sub that rivals bulkier speakers

The 13TW5v2-2 13.5" subwoofer handles up to 600 watts RMS, while boasting a 2-5/8" mounting depth that makes it ideal for tight spaces. The cast-alloy frame provides a rock-solid platform for the mica-filled polypropylene cone and its resilient Santoprene™ rubber surround — you'll enjoy consistent, full-bodied bass output that won't distort under heavy excursion. The sub's 2-ohm impedance draws maximum power from your mono amp.

Product Research

Features

Thin-Line Design: The patented thin-line woofer technology compresses the architecture of the JL Audio 13TW5v2-2 subwoofer and allows it to deliver great bass performance in tight space applications, requiring only 2-5/8" depth. Central to the technology is the Concentric Tube structure that supports the oversized voice coil and the suspension attachments. This permits placing the motor structure much further forward in the speaker than in conventional designs, while maintaining excellent linear excursion capability. Equally important, the design is optimized for extremely small box volume applications.

Concentric Tube Suspension: A challenge in any low-profile woofer design is to permit enough mechanical clearance for the speaker to handle power and generate good output at low frequencies. JL Audio's patented solution employs a molded structure which spans over the edge of the motor system, supporting the spider on the outside of the motor's boundaries and the large diameter voice coil on the inside. The large voice coil permits the magnet to sit inside it, rather than surrounding the coil as is typical in most woofers. The concentric tube structure and the elimination of a conventional top-plate helps JL Audio move the motor structure into the cone body's space to further compress depth, while still permitting substantial mechanical excursion.

Dynamic Motor Analysis (DMA): DMA is JL Audio's proprietary method of improving dynamic motor behavior. As a result of DMA optimization, the 13TW5v2-2 motor maintains a linear force over a long excursion range and stable, fixed magnetic field in the gap over a wide power range. The result is reduced distortion, faithfully reproduced transients, and tight, clean, articulate bass.

Floating Cone Attachment Method (FCAM): JL Audio's patented FCAM technology is a method of attaching the surround/cone assembly to the voice coil/spider assembly to maintain proper surround geometry, thus improving excursion control and dynamic voice coil alignment.

Voice Coil: To counteract the efficiency tradeoff of small box volume, the 13TW5v2-2 is designed to handle very high power levels thanks to the use of a very large 7-inch diameter voice coil.

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: JL Audio recommends a sealed box size volume of 0.8 ft³, resulting in a -3dB point of 41.18 Hz. A diagram is provided in the owner's manual for a sealed box with external dimensions of 19" W x 15" H x 7.75" D, assuming 3/4" thick MDF. (If using 5/8" thick MDF, subtract 1/4" from each dimension.)

Shallow Mount Design: The JL Audio 13TW5v2-2 only requires a mounting depth of 2-5/8" (top mounted).

Customer Q&A

Q
Crutchfield asked: Why did you buy this?
A
My space lacked height. Fitting a sub into a C6 Corvette is not easy. This seems like the perfect solution. [ ANDREW  Jan 25, 2018 ]
A
I need more bass in my car. The factory system just doesn't cut it. I didn't want to take up a lot of room with a big box. Hopefully this will do the trick. I've heard nothing but good things about this sub-woofer. [ Rodney  May 12, 2017 ]
A
They are ridiculous! [ Larry  Mar 09, 2016 ]

Q
Can I run a single jl audio tw5 sub off of a hd1200/1 amp without blowing them?
[ Daniel  Jul 07, 2019 ]

A
yup. Believe it or not, most speakers die from not enough power, vs too much. Just don't turn it up to 11.
[ ANDREW  Sep 19, 2019 ]
A
It will blow!
[ stephen  Jul 18, 2019 ]
A
Sure. You'll need to make sure your box is built correctly and then match the Amp gain to minimize distortion but you can easily get away with it without much concern
[ Mike  Jul 18, 2019 ]
Q
Will a Rockford Fosgate Power T1500-1BDCP amp wired at 1 ohm be enough to power 2 of these subs 13TW5v2-2?
[ Stalker5150  Nov 25, 2017 ]

A
That amp has more than enough power for 2 of these subwoofers. In fact, you will be able to turn down the gain on the amp and won't have to run it at full output. HTH! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=101

Plenty. I built a custom box at 1.1 cu. Ft per sub and am running the JX1001D. I run the amp at 1/4 output and it's deafening. You should run them at 2ohms, not 1 ohm, to keep from burning them up. Just my opinion.

Q
Is the jl hd1200/1 the best choice as an amp for 2 of these subs?

Thanks for your question. For information on comparing two or more models I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences and help you make the best choice for your system and your budget.
