I bought this to replace the factory sub in my 2001 Tahoe. Had to cut the outer rubber trim on the speaker, but once that was done, it was a nice tight fit in the stock enclosure. I paired this with the Rockford Fosgate R150X2 amp and I couldn't be happier. The bass is awesome.

Not what I expected

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It has tight bass, but not as loud as I had read from the other reviews. Iused it as a factory replacement in my eddie bauer, and it fit pretty close with some modifications to the stock box. overall the quality was average. Not what I have come to expect from the name jl audio.

Pros: Tight bass, small back, and nice face on the speakers

Cons: Not very loud

Lil Speaker, Big Bass

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I gotta say, I am very impressed with these subs. Superior sound from such a small pair of subs. This was my first pair of JL Audio speakers and I am very quickly becoming a fan. These subs are designed and best suited in an enclosure type set up, but I am using them mounted in the rear deck of my car. They sound amazing in this set up and I can only imagine how they would perform enclosed in a box. No regrets and very satisfied.

Pros: Amazing sound quality from a small subwoofer. The smaller diameter size allows for more flexibility in mounting locations. I did not want a large speaker box in the trunk and these subs allowed me to do just that. The quality of the products that JL Audio puts out is absolutely superb.

Cons: These subs are designed for encloser type installs. They mount from the top only. It took special tools to cut a bevel seating area on a piece of MDF to match the angle of the trim ring and be able to mount from the bottom.

Awesome 8"s

Jim from Ann Arbor, MI on 7/22/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These little things are great. First pair of 8's i've ever owned and am pretty impressed (usually 10's,12's & 15's). They are grea mid-range subwoofers and do enough damage to shake my side mirrors. They are both in boxes to spec from JL. We custom made 2 boxes to go under my rear seat in my Avalanche and these things are great and allow me to still mount my amp hidden under the seat too. I listen to mostly electronic music these days (but still have an ear for everything) and they play some pretty low frequencies which these struggle (but may be the amp/break in period). Listening to a 311/Sublime mix I made for the boat, these things sounded AMAZING - very musical and rocked my truck.

Pros: Great mid bass response - sound amazing and are very audible.

Cons: Struggle on the low end thus far.. but to be expected from a smaller woofer.

Nice Sub

Dave from Westminster, MD on 7/18/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice replacement for the factory sub in my 2001 Explorer. After 12 years the original sub finally blew out and had to be replaced. All the other reviews were spot on all the way down to the screw behind he enclosure. I now can finally crank up the tunes again. Installation wasn't too bad. It was a bit cumbersome removing the interior panel though. Once out of the way removing the sub enclosure was easy. That was the only way to get to the rear screw. It also made drilling new mounting holes a breeze.

Pros: Nice sub, great sound.

Cons: Wrestling with the interior panel.

Perfect replacement sub

I needed a sub to replace my stock sub in my 1998 Ford Explorer but not sure if could find one that would fit the original sub box but it worked great with just a small amount of altering to the screw locations. And sounds much better then the stock sub.

Pros: Great fix in original sub box.

Cons: Not really a con but you have to drill a few new holes in sub box to mount new sub but no big deal.

FJ Cruiser Replacement Sub

Chris from Boynton Beach, FL on 10/21/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great sub to replace the oem FJ Cruiser sub. I recently upgraded the oem speakers to JL Audios and added the XD 5 channel amp. So I wanted something to match the rest of my install. The only mod required is trimming the trim ring behind the speaker griile due to the JLs thicker mounting ring. The silver JL logo matches the factory silver sub speaker grille.

Cons: none

Nice 8" Sub

Brent from Phoenix, AZ on 6/27/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced the factory sub in a 2004 Ford F150 with the JL along with a Punch 300-1 amp. The bass level in both spl and sound quality is amazing. I did need to add a 1/4" adapter ring in order to mount the sub in the existing box, not a big deal. I would recommend this set up to anyone looking to greatly improve bass performance. I haven't put too many hours on the sub yet so I cannot comment on durability but build quality seems quite nice. So far I am very happy with the purchase and would buy JL audio products again.

Pros: Soound quality, build quality

Cons: None so far

Good vibes

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I went with what the other reviews said and it definitely is surprising for an 8". It is put together well and JL has good customer service. It definitely took more grinding than I had envisioned. I installed it in the stock woofer location of my '02 Yukon and it was over a 1/4" big in its OD. It can be done, but man was it messy. Also packing the box with poly was a good move.

Pros: Looks sleek and blends in with my grey interior

Cons: NOT a direct replacement for my factory 8" sub.

Great product

The product is built of good quality. Sounds great than Lexus ES 300 OEM sub which i replaced. Had easy hook-up connections to power sub.I brought the product based on reviews from Lexus forums. The product is well worth the price. Its been just one week and the sub has already made lot of parts in my car rattle. Now spending some time to fix the lose parts caused by the sub's excellent performance. I really like the sub.Perfect replacement for 98 Lexus ES300 Nakamachi sub.

Pros: Built quality. Ease of use.Sound quality.

Cons: Nothing

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently purchased a 2010 Focus SES that was equipped with a factory 8" woofer. It sounded...ok, but it wasn't enough. I decided that I would replace the factory 8" woofer and started to research the enclosure to see what would fit. From my readings it looked like the JL 8W1v2 would be a very close fit. There were other options that would have bolted in, but I know JL's reputation for quality so I went ahead and ordered the JL. It did not fit the enclosure just right. Mounting depth was about 1/4in too deep. A little time with a heat gun and a little molding later and it fit perfectly. I tried it on the factory amp and it sounded a little better than the original subwoofer. I wasn't happy! So I bought a JL Audio JX250/1 amplifier and JL amp wiring kit. Holy moly I had NO IDEA that a little 8" sub could POUND like that!! This sub/amp combo far exceeded my expectations and I could not be happier with the final result in my car. Big thanks to Crutchfield and JL Audio!

Pros: Big sound in a little package (make sure your enclosure matches the subs requirements!), Excellent value, Great looks!

Cons: NONE!

I have a 1999 expedition and my bass speaker blew .I did tons of research on bass speakers . Some of the stuff was confusing but,I started reading reviews and they were so helpful.Thats why im writing mine :).It was a pain in the rear to get old one out and the new one went in np at all. When I installed it my very first song was from pinkfloyd . I listen to 104.5 and 93.3 so a mix of music.I think it is well worth the money and sounds awesome .The sound is definantly an upgrade from stock speaker.Very good speaker from JL .Its been in for 2 weeks and after a few days it sounded better ,so it does take a few days to break in I didnt know that.A VERY VERY NICE BASS SPEAKER FROM JL,AND TY FOR THE REVIEWS, THEY WERE VERY VERY HELPFUL

Pros: Size was perfect, fast shipping, very easy install and sound.

Cons: Price a little high but, when you get it installed and turn the stereo on SUPER !Well worth the money .

Choosing a sub-woofer for my car was very challenging,a 2007 Pontiac Solstice convertible.I have very little space to replace the stock unit. This one was reccomended by a professional installer because it woud fit.Pared it with the JL Audio amp.AWSOME base. The base is very tight, much better than the stock unit and it will take alot of power, really amazing for a 8" sub and well worth the money.

Alot of bass for such a small sub

afish01 from Minneapolis on 4/25/2011

I got this sub because I wanted some low-end punch in my Civic but did not want to fill up the trunk with a huge box. The ideal sealed box size for this sub is very small (.375 cubic feet) so you can make a small box and tuck it away in the corner of your trunk, leaving plenty of room for other items. I built my own box for this out of 3/4" MDF using outside dimensions 12"x14"x6.75" and powered it off of the rear channels (bridged) from an Alpine 4-channel amp, which ends up being 150 watts. The whole setup sounds great! I am amazed by the great response of this sub and how low it can hit despite its small size. It won't be breaking any windows, but it's enough to make my mirror shake! Very tight, accurate, and linear response.

Just got this sub about a month ago. Its amazing. I have a '92 Pontiac Firebird and this thin kicks hard! Its very clear and punchy-just what i wanted in a sub woofer cause I like to hear my double bass nice and clear and distinct when I crank up the August Burns Red. A very solid sub. I love it and whenever a bass drop comes I feel it in my whole body. I like.

Hammer from U.S.A. on 10/11/2010

I put this sub in the rear slot in my '99 explorer. And it hits like a beast. I can shake every mirror and the roof. Its running off the stock amp which is so bad it has blown two subs before this one. It sounds bad every now and then but thts probaly the amps doing.

Powerful Little Sub

Guest from Orlando, FL on 10/14/2009

Just installed this sub in a custom box in my 2008 VW R32 and I must say it really thumps. I am using a 9 year old amp to push this sub with no issues. I have had a few JL Audio subs in the past and have never been disappointed with the sound and quailty of these woofers. This 8" sub provides the perfrect addition to my factory head unit. Its not overpowering bass but just enough to add that extra kick to the factory unit which so many factory systems lack.

Very impressed

Nick from Flemington, NJ on 9/20/2008

Just got this yesterday. Spent the day building a box for it and wiring everything up. The box had to be custom cause i drive a 2000 Frontier C/C and theres practically no room behind the back seat, but i made it fit. The single sub sounds way better than i expected. Have it hooked up to a profile amp comin off my alpine 9884. couldnt be happier. hits hard and low, and blends perfect with the system.

Jose from San Antonio, TX on 6/3/2008

I bought a pair of these for my F-150 Super Crew in a Q-Logic box and powered by an Alpine MRP-M450 bridged down to 2 ohms. Wow, these things can POUND out the bass!!! No one believes me when I tell them that I have a pair of 8" subs. Super clean sound! A+++

What a surprise!

fantomz from Lambertville, NJ on 1/25/2008

I stumbled across this little sub while in the process of searching for a gift for my girlfriend. I have heard a lot of subs over the years and had been under the assumption that you have to have a larger sub to get great bass. After hearing this sub my views have changed. Not only is it an extremely accurate and uncolored sounding sub, but the amount of bass that it produces in such a small package is astonishing. At higher volumes the excursion is equally impressive, and there was no hint of distortion of any kind. This is my first JL audio purchase(as I had been an Infinity Kappa fan for years), but I can say without a doubt that this will not be my last. I am extremely pleased with the performance and versitile nature of this sub. My hats off to the folks at JL audio.

Enclosure Compatibility

Woofer: JL Audio W1v2 subwoofer features an injection-molded, metallic-finish polypropylene cone woofer with an embossed metallic JL Audio logo with a butyl rubber surround for added durability, woofer excursion and bass response.

Surround Stress Relief: By creating a radius feature on the edge of the cone, stress is relieved from the surround material at  maximum forward excursion, resulting in longer life and more consistent surround behavior

Interlocking Cone & Dust Cap: The W1v2's utilize a dust cap that is not just glued, but also interlocks with features molded into the cone body for a tight snap-fit. This creates a more rigid cone assembly and a more reliable dust cap attachment.

Dynamic Motor Analysis (DMA): DMA is JL Audio's proprietary method aimed at improving dynamic motor behavior. As a result of DMA optimization, W1v2 motors remain linear in motor force over a very long range of excursion, and also maintain a highly stable fixed magnetic field in the gap over a wide power range. The result is vastly reduced distortion, faithfully reproduced transients, and tight, clean, articulate bass.

Floating Cone Attachment Method (FCAM): JL Audio's patented FCAM technology is an innovative method of bonding the surround/cone assembly to the voice coil/spider assembly. This assembly technique ensures proper surround geometry in the assembled speaker for better excursion control and dynamic voice coil alignment.

Vented Reinforcement Collar: The Vented Reinforcement Collar (VRC) is a composite structure that addresses two issues related to reliability.

  • Stress Relief: By reinforcing the critical junction between the cone, voice coil and spider, the VRC greatly reduces failures due to glue breakdown or material weakness. It does this by greatly increasing adhesive contact area and providing stress relief to the spider material at excursion extremes
  • Air Flow: The VRC also features slots that facilitate air flow directly onto the voice coil windings. This reduces thermal compression effects and enhances reliability

Insert Molded Suspension/Coil/Terminal Sub-Assembly: The W1v2 features a unique spider, coil and terminal subassembly which is assembled prior to installation in the speaker frame for optimum alignment and glue-joint integrity. This type of assembly ensures precise lead wire length, lead wire entry and exit angles; and coil to spider perpendicularity.

Elevated Frame Cooling System: The elevated frame design of the W1v2 delivers cool air through slots directly above the top-plate to the voice coil of the speaker. This not only enhances power handling, but also sound quality by minimizing dynamic parameter shifts and power compression.

Customizable Trim Ring: The woofer comes with a removable ring made of black ABS plastic which can be painted to match the installation theme and create a personalized look. You can purchase optional grille mesh inserts which are specifically designed to fit into the inner diameter of the trim ring.
