About the JL Audio 12TW1-2
Compact sub on a mission
Compact sub on a mission
JL Audio applied all their design know-how to creating the 12TW1-2 subwoofer. This shallow-mount 12" sub works in very small enclosures and, with a mounting depth of only 4-3/8 inches, it'll fit in all kinds of tight places you don't expect a subwoofer to go.
Unique construction, built in the USA
The injection-molded mica-filled polypropylene cone with its rubber surround is housed in a specially designed cast-alloy frame that minimizes resonances. JL Audio builds this sub at their Florida factory, using their patented "concentric tube" design to compress the sub's motor structure for a smaller profile without sacrificing performance.
You can mount this sub right up against the back wall of your enclosure and it requires almost no clearance in front. If you're looking for a subwoofer that brings maximum boom to minimal space, you're looking in the right place.

JL Audio 12TW1-2 reviews
Great sound. Hits like 2 twelves.
Pros: Deep bass. Sounds like 2 twelves.

I worked in a custom car audio business for many years before going on to start an unrelated business. Since then I've built some systems for Sound Quality competition and personal enjoyment. Occasionally I get the opportunity to help a friend install a system in their car. I used this woofer for the first time last week in a friend's 2013 Acura TL. We put it in an enclosure with the net 0.50 cubic feet recommended by JL Audio. I've had $1,000 subwoofers and inexpensive ones as well. What I can say about this woofer is that the performance rivals any other shallow mount subwoofer that I've heard, regardless of price, and rivals standard depth subs as well. To get that kind of performance from a 12" woofer out of a half cubic foot enclosure is an impressive feat of engineering by JL Audio. Many small enclosure woofers seem to struggle with reproducing the bottom octave of music and are usually inefficient to boot. Not this one. It is my choice as best performing subwoofer for the dollar that I've heard.
Pros: Excellent low end extension, articulate, amazingly small enclosure. Checks all the boxes!
Cons: Not the cheapest subwoofer, but possibly the best performer for the dollar.

A bit pricy, but you definitely get what you pay for. This sub is heavy, built very well and down right jams. I still can't believe I only have one sub, it sounds like I have two. Thanks JL for such an awesome product.
Pros: Build quality, very loud and clean bass.
Cons: absolutely nothing.

This looks like a great build but unfortunately with my application I could not fit the sub. Although the mounting depth is shallow the basket diameter will not fit in an F-150 supercab enclosure due to the angle of the box. Typically enclosure depths are calculated off a magnet diameter that is 5-6" but this subs basket is 9" and flush with the base of the magnet making it very wide at the base and that interferes with all available enclosures. If you have an enclosure that is equal depth from front to back no issue but if it tapers like supercab boxes do then this will not work for you. I'm going to try 2 JL Audio 10W0v3-4 in a similar enclosure since these are equipt with smaller magnet diameters and the cost was actually less.
Pros: Nice build quality
Cons: Large basket diameter complicates install

Thin-Line Design: JL Audio's patented thin-line woofer technology compresses the architecture of the 12TW1-2 subwoofer and allows it to deliver great bass performance in tight space applications (less than 4-5/8" deep). Central to the technology is the Concentric Tube structure that supports the oversized voice coil and the suspension attachments. This permits placing the motor structure much further forward in the speaker than conventional designs, while maintaining excellent linear excursion capability. Equally important, the 12TW1-2 is designed for extremely small enclosure applications (0.65 ft³ sealed and 1.125 ft³ ported) and there is no pole vent, so no space is needed between the woofer and the back of the enclosure.
Concentric Tube Suspension: JL Audio's patented Concentric Tube Suspension employs a molded structure which spans beyond the edge of the motor structure, supporting the spider on the outside of the motor's boundaries and the large diameter voice coil on the inside. The large voice coil permits the magnet to sit inside it, rather than surrounding the coil as is typical in most woofers. The concentric tube structure and the elimination of a conventional top-plate helps JL Audio place the motor higher up into the cone body's space to further compress depth, while still permitting excellent mechanical excursion.
Mica-Filled Polypropylene Woofer: The subwoofer features an injection-molded, mica-filled polypropylene cone with a rubber surround for added durability, excursion and bass response.
Dynamic Motor Analysis (DMA): DMA is JL Audio's proprietary method of improving dynamic motor behavior. As a result of DMA optimization, the 12TW1-2 motor remains linear over a long excursion range, and also maintains a stable fixed magnetic field in the gap over a wide power range. The result is reduced distortion, faithfully reproduced transients, and tight, articulate bass.
Floating Cone Attachment Method (FCAM): JL Audio's patented FCAM technology is an innovative method of bonding the surround/cone assembly to the voice coil/spider assembly. This assembly technique ensures proper surround geometry in the assembled speaker for better excursion control and dynamic voice coil alignment.
Sealed Box Volume: JL Audio recommends a sealed box volume of 0.65 ft³. A diagram is provided in the owner's manual for a sealed box with external dimensions of 26-1/2" W x 14" H x 5-1/2" D, assuming 3/4" thick material. (If you are using 5/8" thick materials, subtract 1/4" from each dimension.)
Ported Box Volume: JL Audio recommends a ported box volume of 1.125 ft³. A diagram is provided in the owner's manual for a ported box with external dimensions of 31-3/4" W x 16" H x 7" D, assuming 3/4" thick material. (If you are using 5/8" thick materials, subtract 1/4" from each dimension.) A slot port is recommended with the following dimensions:
- Slot Width: 5-1/2"
- Slot Height: 2-1/4"
- Slot Length: 22-5/8"
