Big bass for your Wrangler

The JL Audio Stealthbox® custom-fit subwoofer delivers incredible bass in a package that takes up minimal space and blends in with your vehicle's interior. JL Audio designs Stealthboxes to fit in specific vehicles, then loads them with appropriate subwoofers for optimal performance. Pair the system with an appropriate amp and wiring for stellar concealed bass.

Perfect sound to go with the perfect fit

JL Audio puts months of research and design into each Stealthbox® custom-fit subwoofer to ensure not only that it fits, but that it sounds better than any other custom enclosed system. First, JL Audio determines the ideal shape and mounting location for each enclosure, so that it looks like an original part of the vehicle it's designed for. Next, they mount each high-performance subwoofer so it delivers amazing firepower from within its unique enclosure, without sacrificing clarity or musical depth.

The fiberglass enclosure offers superior rigidity while allowing more interior volume, so the sub can turn out louder, deeper bass. JL Audio craftsmen then laminate, grind, join, and finish each Stealthbox® by hand. The end result: full-bodied, distortion-free bass from an impressively stealthy enclosure.

Enjoy enhanced, custom-fit sound

This Stealthbox® enclosure fits in your 2007-up Jeep Wrangler. It installs on the cargo-area floor, raising the floor about five inches. Installed correctly, the enclosure can be easily removed from your Jeep if you need the space or anticipate some serious dirt and mud. This Stealthbox® includes one 10" 2-ohm W1v3 subwoofer from JL Audio. Please check with us before purchasing by using the vehicle selector, or calling an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to verify fit information.

JL Audio has rated the difficulty of this Stealthbox® installation as moderate. You should be able to install this enclosure if you have experience with car audio but some vehicles may require modifications.

Underwhelming bass and disappointing construction

Mike from Atlanta, GA on 10/6/2018

2016 Jeep Wrangler

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Bass is underwhelming and within three months the cover warped so badly (nothing was ever placed on it) that it sat on top of the woofer making it sound even worse. On top, the speaker doesn't lock or screw into place to avoid theft. Difficult to believe that JL gets this much for this. Guess their are enough suckers like me out there! Never again...

Pros: Fits well

Cons: Sound, quality and security

Absolutely phenomenal. Only added a few inches to my back trunk space and it sounds amazing. A very clean and quality subwoofer. If you are looking to break your windows with a lot of bass you aren't going to get that with this, but for only one 10 inch subwoofer it has a lot of punch. Well worth the money. Simply isn't a better alternative for the amount of space it takes up, and the high amount of bass you get.

Pros: Keep your trunk space More than enough bass Quality product

Cons: Can't find any

Clean look, great sound

Matthew from Chicago, IL on 12/4/2017

2009 Jeep Wrangler

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I had been eyeing this for some time and finally bought a discounted "scratch and dent" one along with a Sound Ordinance amp to power it. This sub does not disappoint. It is set up well to produce great sound making up for the lack of bass that the stock Jeep Wrangler speaker locations just cannot seem to produce even after upgrading the 4 factory speakers and head unit. The lid did have a crack (scratch & dent), but that doesn't seem to have any affect on the sound. The bass is clean and crisp. Highly recommend

Pros: The much needed bass, minimal loss of cargo space, incredible amount of bass from a single 10" sub, stealth design blends in well

Cons: Higher cost, but you do get what you pay for. Now my wife wants to drive the Jeep more... haha

Fantastic addition to a Jeep Wrangler to get the much needed bass in the vehicle unobtrusively. Dirt Simple install and great sound when coupled with a good amp

Pros: Takes up very little space and has great sound

Cons: Loosing the back storage well, but can be swapped out (tool free) in under a minute if need be.

Great for a single, low profile, sub

Perfect fit. Paired it with a 5 channel amp running 500 watts to the sub. Mounted the sub control knob near the shifter for easy access. Sonically, the JL performs wonderfully but loses some steam with the sub 30 Hz frequencies and some of the frequencies at the crossover point of 80 Hz. Make sure you've got some solid performing component speakers in the soundbar and fronts to keep up and handle those 80 Hz - 100 Hz frequencies to even out your listening experience. Great sub so far with the hard top on. Taking the hard top off for the summer and hoping the open air sound remains at least partially enjoyable.

Pros: Perfect fit for my Jeep Wrangler Sport. Impressive sound. Easy install.

Cons: Performance below 30 Hz is lacking. Frequencies around 80 Hz are a little sloppy.

I used an amp recommended for this box but, it doesn't sound very tight. A little disappointed after reading the other reviews on this box I thought it would sound much better..

Pros: uses the space in the back, leaving more cargo room

Cons: over priced for the sound quality.

I have to admit I had my reservations about dropping this much money on a box and subwoofer but I got everything I paid for, This thing knocks hard even with the Top off and worth the extra money.

Pros: Doesn't take up that much room in the trunk and if you don't know what you're looking for you would never know there's a system in the trunk

Cons: None just buy it you won't regret it

The stealthbox has been an excellent addition to my audio system. The subwoofer provides a clean, great sounding low end in a compact box that allows for maximization of the small amount of cargo space in my JK. The black color matches up to my interior very closely. I paired with the Alpine PDR V75, which fits perfectly in the amplifier cut out on the stealthbox and pushes the sub to the perfect levels. The install was a breeze, fits solid when the rear door is shut with no rattling issues whatsoever. The steathbox really fits its name as potential thieves have no idea that the unit is in the back of my Jeep. Overall, very satisfied and a definite recommendation for anyone considering purchase.

Pros: Great sound, compact, and fits perfectly in the back of my jeep.

Cons: A little on the pricey side, on average $100-$150 above local stereo shop's quote for a comparable build (however no where near the compactness).

JL Audio Stealthbox

Jenna from Missouri on 1/17/2016

2010 Jeep Wrangler

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I bought the Stealthbox after researching several options for my husband's Jeep; no other subwoofers seemed to work well. The Stealthbox fits in the limited area available, blends in with the interior, and leaves plenty of room for the back seat and some storage. A big selling point was the space available in the box for an amp. After getting everything installed, it sounds GREAT. I can't review the sub without an amp, but I can say that even with the stock speakers and head unit, the sound in the Jeep is vastly improved, and you can't see the sub and amp at all. Delivery was quick, the packaging was very sturdy, and the sub sounds awesome; all in all, I'm very pleased with both the product and Crutchfield's service. We'll be back.

Pros: Fits well in the small amount of space available in a Jeep; great sound; additional space for separate amp.

Cons: None so far.

"Basketball punch sound"

unknownguitarist from Largo, Florida on 11/12/2013

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I do not listen much to hip hop, or music that shakes your surroundings outside the vehicle. It takes 15' of physical airspace to reproduce bass waves under certain frequencies anyway. What I do like is tight solid punch of the kick drum, of which is referred to as "basketball sound or punch" on high end audio sites like gearslutz. This delivers that. It is hooked up to a JL HD900/5. The amp has a separate volume knob for just the sub, nice touch and I use it a lot.

Pros: Solid punch. Has an area to mount the amp. Ported towards the front, so the sound "crawls" thru under the back seat. Allows the area above it to still be used for placing groceries or suitcases on top. Easy to install. Blends right in with the rest of the interior. Unless you know what you are looking at, it does have the stealth / undetectable going on. I also used a JL clean sweep, cause I wanted to use the stock radio, and leave the Jeep with the top off and not attract curious thieves

Cons: Price was no object for me given the above pros, , but many can get results without the attributes mentioned for less money.

Box had a nice fit in vehicle but raddled allot had to screw it down to eliminate vibrations. I found that the bass was not as I expected from a JL product I was hoping for more bass. I powered it with the JL 700/5. I got better bass from a Kenwood sub in a custom wood box from my old system witch cost me a couple of hundred bucks!

Pros: Great fit, clean look

Cons: Box rattles and lack of bass for a JL product.

Product Research

Features

Overview: JL Audio's Stealthbox subwoofer systems are designed to hide away in a specific vehicle. Please enter your vehicle information to confirm fit.

Construction: Stealthboxes are hand-crafted from fiberglass and/or Advanced Molded Composite (AMC) materials. Fiberglass delivers a level of enclosure rigidity and dimensional stability not possible with other enclosure materials, allowing wall thickness to be reduced compared to a typical wood enclosure. This gives you more interior box volume for a given external volume. Fiberglass and AMC materials are very strong and can be molded into very complex shapes; giving JL Audio the ability to design your Stealthbox to fit perfectly into tight spots and minimize intrusion into your vehicle's useful space. Each Stealthbox is laminated, ground, joined, and finished by hand in the USA. Proprietary techniques and materials developed by JL Audio through years of fiberglass manufacturing experience ensure consistent quality and performance.

Woofer: One 10" JL Audio 10W1v3-2, 2-ohm subwoofer is loaded in this enclosure.

  • Dynamic Motor Analysis (DMA): DMA is JL Audio's proprietary method of improving dynamic motor behavior. As a result of DMA optimization, the W1v3-2 motor remains linear over a long excursion range, and also maintains a stable, fixed magnetic field in the gap over a wide power range. The result is reduced distortion, faithfully reproduced transients, and tight, clean, articulate bass.
  • Floating Cone Attachment Method (FCAM): JL Audio's patented FCAM technology is an innovative method of bonding the surround/cone assembly to the voice coil/spider assembly. This assembly technique ensures proper surround geometry in the assembled speaker for better excursion control and dynamic voice coil alignment.
  • Vented Reinforcement Collar: The Vented Reinforcement Collar (VRC) is a composite structure that addresses two issues related to reliability:
    • Stress Relief: By reinforcing the critical junction between the cone, voice coil and spider, the VRC reduces failures due to glue breakdown or material weakness. It does this by increasing adhesive contact area and providing stress relief to the spider material at excursion extremes.
    • Air Flow: The VRC also features slots that facilitate air flow directly onto the voice coil windings, thus reducing thermal compression effects and enhancing reliability.
  • Insert Molded Suspension/Coil/Terminal Sub-Assembly: The W1v3-2 features a unique spider, coil and terminal subassembly, assembled prior to installation in the speaker frame for optimum alignment and glue-joint integrity. This type of assembly ensures precise lead wire length, lead wire entry and exit angles, and coil/spider alignment.
  • Elevated Frame Cooling System: The elevated frame design of the W1v3-2 delivers cool air through slots directly above the top-plate to the voice coil. This not only enhances power handling, but also sound quality by minimizing dynamic parameter shifts and power compression.

Q
How much weight can you put on top of the box?
[ Carl  Jul 11, 2019 ]

A
Hi Carl, thanks for your question. We do not have a weight limit listed on JL Audio Stealthbox, moderate weight such as groceries, or suitcases shouldn't be an issue, but if you're thinking of packing a heavy load into your Jeep, I suggest speaking with customer support at JL Audio, they should have the info available to answer that question. You can reach JL Audio Customer Support at 954-624-0113.

Q
Will installation affect opening and closing of the cargo compartment?
[ Lubsy  Jul 10, 2019 ]
5 answers
A
The StealthBox sits down in the cargo compartment so you won't be able to use that area for storage with the speaker enclosure installed. As a solution for this exact delema, I purchased a tailgate-mounted molle system to store necessities in. Smittybilt makes one that's under $60 that comes with two molle compatible pouches. I have a decent assortment of tools in one, and my retrieval equipment (gloves, tow rope, etc) in the other.
[ Robert T.  Jul 10, 2019 ]
A
No it will not affect opening the tailgate.
[ Kevin  Jul 10, 2019 ]
A
I did at first but you need to secure the brackets supplied to the bed floor so you have the clearance. Worked out perfect, very stealth looking in the back compartment.
[ DAVID  Jul 10, 2019 ]
A
If you are talking about the in floor storage, it replaces the compartment completely, meaning there is no storage compartment after installing the Stealthbox

[ Kevin  Nov 09, 2018 ]
A
Yes, the black is a very close (not exact) match to the factory carpet.

[ ERIC  Jun 08, 2018 ]

I am running 500w RMS and it's pretty solid. Check the specs to make sure that 300w falls within their operating power recommendations.

Q
Is this a noticeable upgrade from the alpine sub? 2016 JK.
[ Steve  May 19, 2018 ]
6 answers
A
Yes it is noticeable as a vehicle occupant. Externally the difference won't be much as the sounds is directed internally. Overall wattage is higher output as well. Easy install with minimal loss of storage.
[ KARL  May 20, 2018 ]
A
I do not have any reference to the Alpine sub, but this unit puts out a tremendous amount of bass, if driven by a suitable amplifier (which the good folks at Crutchfield spec'd out for me). Not sure if the factory Alpine amp has enough power to drive the JL Audio Stealthbox. This is a powerful beast. The top of the Stealthbox looks and blends in perfectly with the factory interior but the caveat is it is only made from expanded foam and the first time you kneel on it on the center of one side, the foam will crack rendering a very flexible top surface. I replaced all the foam with plywood (covered in the same material as the Stealthbox) and now it's virtually indestructible as well as looks and sounds fantastic. In my opinion it should've come from the factory like that, but to be fair would've added a fair bit to the price, weight and shipping cost. Maybe if they offered the plywood top as an upgrade/option would make more sense.
[ John  May 19, 2018 ]
A
I don't have any experience with the Alpine sub. I installed this unit with a Kenwood 5 channel amp in a 2011 JK. I wanted a sub and a place to mount an amp, under the seat of a JK is not a good choice. This gives you easy install and easy access. I've had it for 7 months now and am still very happy with the purchase.
[ John  May 19, 2018 ]
A
It's a pretty noticeable upgrade, especially if you get new speakers up front too. Louder and better quality.
[ Kassidy  May 19, 2018 ]
A
I didn't have the alpine audio system. But yes I have heard them and I believe it good upgrade in sound.
[ Kevin  May 19, 2018 ]
A
Hell to the yes! Night and day... wait till you get a look at the factory amp, it's a joke. I replaced every speaker and run a couple amps (one for sound bar/dash and one pushing the sub). If you don't do that you'll still have a major bass improvement but doing all of them is worth the struggle that it requires to replace the dash speakers. Also, this box is so crisp and clean, the fit and finish is flawless. There is a perfect spot to mount the amp, wiring is so neat. It's one of those details that will continue to amaze you and impress everyone who notices.

You can also contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.
[ Kenny  Sep 01, 2017 ]  Staff
A
I don't believe the factory head units have the recommended power output for the subwoofer. I still have my factory unit in the dash (with CD player, XM / Sirus Radio and Bluetooth connectivity for my iPhone), but ran a 5 channel amp that I purchased here on Crutchfield to power the sub and add some punch to my entire system. The 4 channels run 100 watts to the front and rear, left and right speakers each; and the 5th channel is a dedicated subwoofer channel with 600 watts of power going to the JL audio box. I wouldn't recommend just running the sub from the head unit. The amp, speaker wires and power kit, together, cost me around $350 during one of the sales and it was definitely a great investment for a solid sound upgrade.

Even if you found a 15" sub that worked in the volume of that box, I don't see anyway you would be able to just open up the hole more. Espically since the box has all sorts of curves and contours, I don't know how well any other sub would even drop in without banging into various edges.

What size is the amp tray?
[ Blake  Feb 18, 2016 ]

Thanks for the heads up, Steve! JL Audio makes and ships the Stealthbox enclosures directly from their warehouses so our product researchers aren't able to measure the amp tray dimensions on their own and JL Audio doesn't include that information in the specs or owner's manual. That said, we verified that Steve purchased this same model from us and thus would have hands-on access to the amp tray; so the dimensions he listed in his response (8.25" x 12.25") should be accurate. You can also try contacting JL Audio's Support at 954-624-0113 for more information. I hope that helps. My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=159
