Features

Overview: The JL Audio JD400/4 is a 4-channel full-range Class D amplifier. It's effectively two full range 2-channel amps built into one chassis (labeled CH. 1&2 and CH. 3&4). Each section of the amp is bridgeable, so it can be wired as 4-channel, 3-channel, or 2-channel.

Amplifier Power Ratings:

  • At 14.4 volts: 20 Hz-20 kHz, <1% THD+N
    • 4Ω: 75 watts RMS x 4
    • 2Ω: 100 watts RMS x 4
    • Bridged 4Ω: 200 watts RMS x 2
  • At 12.5 volts: 20 Hz-20 kHz, <1% THD+N
    • 4Ω: 60 watts RMS x 4
    • 2Ω: 90 watts RMS x 4
    • Bridged 4Ω: 180 watts RMS x 2

Clipping LED: Using a sine-wave test tone (50 Hz for a subwoofer or 1 kHz for full range speakers) recorded at 0 dB reference level (not included), the clipping LED helps you set the gain control to the maximum unclipped level.

Crossovers: Each 2-channel section of the amplifier has an independent 12dB/octave crossover; each can be set to high-pass, low-pass, or off (full range). The crossover points are independently variable from 50 Hz to 500 Hz.

Protection Circuitry: The JD400/4's protection circuitry automatically turns the amplifier off if thermal limits are exceeded, a short circuit is detected in the speaker wiring, or the input voltage drops below 11 volts.

Controls:

  • Input Sensitivity: rotary controls (independent for each 2-channel section); used to match your source unit's output voltage to the input stage of the amplifier for maximum clean output; the range of the dial depends on how the Input Voltage switch is set
  • Input Voltage: 2-position switch:
    • Low: input sensitivity control (gain) range is 200mV-2V; used with the preamp output of typical aftermarket radios
    • High: input sensitivity control (gain) range is 800mV-8V; used with speaker level outputs and high output preamps
  • Crossover Mode: 3-position switches (independent for each 2-channel section):
    • Off: crossover is bypassed
    • HP: High-Pass
    • LP: Low-Pass
  • Crossover Frequency: rotary controls (independent for each 2-channel section); continuously variable from 50-500 Hz
  • Turn-on Mode: 3-position switch:
    • Remote: use when the source unit has a +12 volt remote turn-on wire (preferred method)
    • Offset: the amp reads a small DC signal typical on the speaker level output of factory radios (senses the offset on the channel 1 input)
    • Signal: detects a midrange speaker level signal on the input; turns off after approximately 30 with no signal
  • Input Mode: 2-position switch; set to the number of inputs used:
    • 2 Channel: in 2-channel mode the signal on the channel 1&2 inputs feeds all four output channels
    • 4 Channel: each output channel has a dedicated input

Connections:

  • Power: The power, ground, and remote turn-on connections are set-screw terminals:
    • Power and Ground: accept up to 4-gauge wire (4-gauge minimum recommended); the included 3mm hex key is used to tighten/loosen the set-screws
    • Remote Turn-on: accepts up to 10-gauge wire (18-gauge minimum recommended); the included 2.5mm hex key is used to tighten/loosen the set-screw
Note: The amplifier is not equipped with a fuse. An external 40-amp fuse (not included) must be installed on the power wire. If a wiring kit is used which includes a fuse with a value other than 40-amps, the original should be replaced with a 40-amp fuse.
  • Speaker Output Terminals: The speaker outputs are set-screw terminals. They accept up to 8-gauge wire (16-gauge minimum recommended). The included 2.5mm hex key is used to tighten/loosen the set-screws.
  • Signal Inputs: Two pair of stereo RCA input jacks accept either preamp or speaker level signals. When connecting speaker level signals, a speaker wire to RCA adapter is useful.
  • Preamp Outputs: The stereo RCA preamp outputs pass the signal connected to the channel 1&2 inputs, so another amplifier can be added easily. The output is not affected by the JD400/4's gain or crossover controls. The preamp output signal is buffered to prevent noise.

Note: When the input voltage switch is set to Low, the voltage of the RCA output matches the input; when set to High, the output voltage is attenuated -12 dB.

We do expect this amp will be able to power 3 ohm speakers. JL Audio does not provide any power specifications for 3 ohm speakers. We typically average the 2 and 4 ohm power ratings to get the expected 3 ohm power rating which is 87.5W RMS per channel for this amp.

Greetings Arturo, and thank you for your questions. Filter frequency is blocking out certain frequencies that would distort a speaker, or sub. If there was a best position, it would not be adjustable. You listen to your speakers as you adjust, when your speakers start to distort, you back off the adjustment. The "Input Sens." control is used to match the source unit's output voltage to the input stage of the amplifier for maximum clean output. Low/high input voltage adjustment is when you are either using speaker level in, or RCA level in. RCA level is low level 5 volts or less, and the speaker level is at 12 volts, so that would be set to high.

You could if you prefer Fred, but you are slightly overpowering the front 2 Bose 131's with the JL Audio JD400/4. Bose has listed specs at 40-watts RMS for those 131 speakers so you could power them with the JL amp, but you could potentially cause damage to the Bose with high volume listening. If you are looking for extended performance for those front speakers, I would simply adjust your input sensitivity lower on the channels powering the Bose 131's to avoid any issues.

There's a possibility this will be an easy swap with the Kicker, it just depends on how the amp is connected. This amp requires at least a 4-gauge power and ground leads and a 40-amp fuse is recommended. It does have preamp inputs if you're using rca's to connect this to your radio or line output converter.

DSR-1 feeding this amp. Gave up on the Rockford side, if I understand correctly then I'm just using the Maestro. If I am understanding correctly further (further correctly?) then the Maestro is feeding the amp 4 volts to the inputs? Right now the powered sub is coming off thee DSR-1. Once I gave up on the Rockford side, the sub is MUCH quieter. Would I do better switching the sub to the amp pre-outs? I don't understand how much it would be attenuated. Could I be making my situation worse?

If you wired your subwoofer in parallel you would get 100 watts RMS off of a single channel off of that amplifier which would be at the 2 ohm load. That is the most power you could get off any single channel in any configuration.

We won't be able to confirm any fit there sadly Mike, as the JL JD400/4 is a custom install item. What I CAN say is that having seen the inside of your fairing, this amp is a little beefy and I think it would be a tough fit. I'd consider this JL MX500/4 in it's place. adding to the answer that states the speakers cannot be faded when each channel has two speakers wired to 2 ohms..(8 speakers)..#1..EACH speaker cannot be faded..however..each channel with two 4 ohm speakers wired to 2 ohms fade the same as if each channel only had 1 speaker on it...#2....I have two sets of 4 ohm component speakers wired together to two ohms IN EACH DOOR..so 16 speakers.I am installing a second jl jd400 and splitting the load between the 2 amps but for now it is running and [playing fine.That along with two skar evl 12" subs each sub powered by its own rp12001d and i am literally backing the screws out of my door hinges..overkill? perhaps...satisfying? absoloutely.

Something often times overlooked is the crossover network. If you have a component set where the frequencies are divided at a given point in both directions there is no significant overlap so impedance does not get reduced if you think about it. So for example you could build a component set where a tweeter handles frequencies above 3000hz and the mid handles frequencies 3000hz and below each and each could be 4 ohms wired in parallel but because they never essentially playback at the same time for the given input frequency the impedance will never drop down since they don't play at the same time and frequency. The problem occurs more when you have two drivers running full range or covering the same frequency range and wire them in parallel in this case the impedance of two 4 ohm drivers would drop down to 2 ohms. Also though we design systems based on nominal/average impedance its important to note that musical playback actually results in fluctuation of impedance in reality it is never constant in real playback terms. There is also a difference in ability of amplifiers to actually respond to these fluctuations in impedance. Only the most sophisticated designed high current amplifiers are able to approach the kind of performance that was mentioned by Allison. For example very few amps will actually double the wattage as the impedance is halved typically they are able to something in between such as 4 ohms at 100 watts and 75 watts at 2 ohms. There are some expensive competition amps that can live up to this theoretical performance but that is an exception to the rule. That doesn't mean the theoretical information is not useful we just need to keep it in context.

Technically you could connect a total of 8 speakers to this amp, 2 speaker per channel. When that is done it will reduce the impedance to 2 ohms. When two 4 ohm speakers are connected to the same channel they need to be wired in parallel to get the 2 ohm impedance. Once the impedance drops to 2 ohms the amplifier will output more power. At 2 ohms this amp will output 100 watts rms meaning each speaker will receive 50 watts rms each. Also, you will not have the ability to fade the speakers when connected this way.

Well that's actually not entirely correct. Because the amp is four channel you could still have it connected to six speakers even without a crossover because this amp is stable at 2 ohms per channel. For example you could use channels 3 and 4 for the rear speakers, and for channels 1 and 2 you could connect your dash and door speakers. Even if the dash and door tweeters played the same frequencies at the same time the amp could still safely handle it if the speakers were wired in parallel which would result in a nominal 2 ohm load. Since the amp is two ohm stable yes it would work. However, you may not want to do this because you would have no way of balancing out the level in loudness between the door speakers and the dash speakers and in most cases one would be louder than the other so it would take some design and experimentation to get those levels where you want. Speakers have different sensitivity levels and especially when they are mounted in different locations there is no practical way to get these levels to balance well without separate amplification. With a separate amp for the dash speakers you could make the perfect adjustment with the gain and crossover settings. So in this case yes you can but it would be better to add a low powered mini compact amp for the smaller dash speakers which will give you the control you need. Another option is to use a component set put the mid in the door and the tweeter in the dash. Most good component sets have a level controls for the tweeter which can help you make some adjustments so this is another possible option as well.

This amp is a 4 way. It has connection for 4 speakers. Unless you have front crossovers that split the signal to two speakers from a single input this will not work.

Yes you can. You would hook one set to the front channels and the other set to the rear channels. Despite multiple drivers these components have crossovers that filter the frequencies. For the Excelon KFC-XP6903C the nominal impedance is 4 ohms no problem there. For the Infinity Primus PR9610cs the nominal impedance is lower at 2.7 ohms well within the minimum load rating of the amplifier which 2 ohms per channel. Beyond your question you may want to look at the sensitivity rating of each model. The Infinity is listed as 89 db at 2.83 volts while the sensitivity rating of the Kenwood set is 84 db at 1 watt/1 meter. These are different measurement methods so in order to compare the two speaker we need to convert one of the sensitivity ratings over. For the Infinity the 89 db at 2.83 volts converts to 84.3 db at 2.83 volts (free converter calculators are online). So in this case it is nearly a perfect match in output level between both brands which will give you flexibilty as to where you install them. In other words one set won't sound louder than the other. However, this my be mute since if you run the amp in four channel mode it would give you adjustments in the gain settings as well but in this case I would assume a fairly even split.

I googled 8 gauge and it should handle 40 amps. Not sure if it would want to try it though for safety reasons it could get warm and heat up burning the wire insulation and not blow the fuse. Lowest I would try would be 6 gauge. JL recommends 4 gauge and I use 4 gauge also. I have this amp and it is fabulous. I run 2 ohm speakers front and rear crossed over at 80 hz. handles it fine doesn't shut off or heat up too bad One thing I hate about JL amps and a few other is the lack of a built in fuse on their amps. It is a hassle to put fuse in between the amp and junction box (takes up lots of space. Many manufacturers add built in replaceable fuse located on the amp itself which is much easier for installs

You can use what you want but I would follow the recommendations in the manual of the amp. I would personally use what the amp calls for or bigger which is what I did. The bigger the wire, in my opinion, will give you better results. Also make sure you have a good ground.

So if I am understanding this correctly, I can use this without using a line out converter? I have a factory system and a harness that has all speaker wires coming out. So what I am trying to do is simply install new door speakers and connect them with harnesses to the existing factory wires already run in the doors, then connect the harness adapter from the factory unit and run the speaker wires already coming off this harness adapter to the 4 channels on this amp. Besides connecting the power and ground and remote, this is all I would need to do, correct? I wouldn't even need to use RCAs as I am not running subs or anything. This would allow me to basically plug and play new door speakers with higher RMS to match this amp and just connect the factory radio harness wires to this amp?

Well true in most cases. However, there are special circumstances when you may want to use an LOC with a built in impedance load feature. For example, certain cars like my Alfa Romeo for instance has an impedance monitor on it and if it doesn't see a certain level of impedance a warning dash light will light up on the dash because it thinks the speaker is shorted or missing. In this case, I had to use Audio Control LOC 1 which has a built in load switch to solve this unique problem. You probably won't have that issue only certain vehicles will.Enter an answer to this question.

No, you'll need a line output converter as the amp input is RCA and the amp output would be to your speaker wire. You have to convert to RCA from you factory head unit whether you use this amp for door speakers or for subs. The only input on this sun is for RCA's

Any amp you use requires either RCAs or a LOC. That's how the amp receives the signal (music) from the stereo and then used speaker wires tonpush the sound out.

The only issue with that would be that these speakers have a max rms of 60 @3 ohms while the jd400/4 has a output of 75rms @4 ohms so the amp will put out more power than your speakers can handle. Otherwise, in regards to quality of the amp, I own one and love it. I have it on 6x9 infinity speakers in my truck and it fills up the large cab with sound even with the windows down. The quality of the sound is very good. Music is crisp and clear without the highs screeching at you. My mom rode in my truck the other day and said she could hear things in songs that she's never heard before. She drives a 2018 Chevy with a Bose speaker system.

So you don't need a LOC with this correct? Just tap into the speaker wires behind the receiver and run it straight to the amp?

Well true in most cases. However, there are special circumstances when you may want to use an LOC with a built in impedance load feature. For example, certain cars like my Alfa Romeo for instance has an impedance monitor on it and if it doesn't see a certain level of impedance a warning dash light will light up on the dash because it thinks the speaker is shorted or missing. In this case, I had to use Audio Control LOC 1 which has a built in load switch to solve this unique problem. You probably won't have that issue only certain vehicles will.

probably not. The JL Audio is a 4 channel amp. You are already using it for 2 components and one output for the sub making 3 outputs. I would recommend hooking up the 4 component speakers to it and purchasing a dedicated subwoofer amplifier

Im running 2 JL 12w3's in a ported box. Way more power than i need. Very loud and low distortion. Its only a 2 channel amp thow. Class D ( subwoofer amp )

the Focals are rated at 60 wpc RMS @ 4 ohms the amp is 75 wpc RMS at 4 ohms X 4 (RMS). Looks like a great matchup. I use this amp to power 4 Infinity 60 CSX. They are 2.5 ohms and handle 100 watts RMS and amp will handle 100 watts at 2 ohms so again good match. Buy the amp it is a nice deal. Only thing I don't like about this amp is they cheaped out and did not put an attached fuse to the chassis so you will have to add your own but it is compact. Also they have some special way to set the gains but did not give a cd. I did not have luck setting my gain with JBL unit so set head unit @ 30 (40 max) and set the gain this way by experimenting.

This amp needs a 4 gauge power wiring kit and works best with 14 gauge speaker wire going to the speakers. Audio input cables will be needed and those will vary depending on the radio its connected to. I recommend contacting an advisor by calling 1-800-324-9695 to get a personal recommendation on all the parts to complete the install into your system

can i install 2 of these amps with one 4 gauge wire running to battery? 4 gauge seems like an overkill. My old vehicle I had about 4 or 5 amps running with 4 gauge Welding cable and never had an issues.

both amps recommend 4 gauge power and ground wire. You can use 4 gauge from the battery but I recommend 0 gauge to a distribution block then 2 4 gauge wires 1 for each amp so your not starving the amps for power

You should be able to run two of these with 4 gauge from the battery to a fused distribution block, then an 8 gauge to each amp. I'm just wrapping up an install with this and a 600w mono amp, 4 gauge from the battery, then 8 gauge to each amp.

Yes you could depending how far the amps are from the battery ( check out amplifier wire gauge chart on Crutchfield) with a 80 amp fuse 6 to 8 inches from the battery to a distribution block then 2 4 gauge wires with 2 40 amp fuses 1 fuse and wire for each amp. But I recommend a 0 gauge wire from the battery. I used 0 gauge wire with a 70 amp fuse from the battery to the distribution block with a 4 gauge wire and 40 amp fuse to my jd 400/4 for my kicker ks components. And a 8 gauge wire and 30 amp fuse to my jd 250/1 for my jl 8w3v3-4 sub.

You need to look at a wiring guide to determine. https://www.crutchfield.com/S-EkEuN7g9HO2/learn/learningcenter/car/cable_gauge_chart.html . It looks like it should be fine though. Each JL pulls 40 amps, so 5 gauge should be fine. You'll need an 80 amp fuse near the battery and a fused distribution block near the JLs, each with a 40 amp fuse.

Ideally you would want a bigger feed wire then break out to two smaller cables via block distribution.

Is the listed signal to noise ratio of 104 db an error? This seems significantly higher than any of the other amplifiers and is higher than JL's premium lineup.

The 104 db number is at the highest rated power output. JL has the signal to noise listed at 84 db at 1 watt.
