Overview

Our take on the JL Audio C1-525x

After an extensive tour of JL Audio HQ, I got the opportunity to talk to their engineering and development team about the current JL Audio lineup and upcoming projects. Given all the work they're doing with premium car audio, I was surprised by how excited they were for customers to hear their workhorse C1 Series — speakers designed for drivers simply looking for a sensible factory speaker replacement, not necessarily an audiophile-grade solution. The reason for that excitement, once I heard it, made perfect sense — every JL Audio speaker must uphold the quality and sound associated with the name. You may be looking for something that's just listenable, but what you'll get with the C1 Series is an audio experience that puts it at the top of its class. And then, just maybe, you'll end up being a JL Audio fan for life.

C1-525x

An aluminum edge-driven dome tweeter helps define this C1 speaker's distinctive sound.

What sets C1 apart?

JL Audio designed the C1 Series C1-525x 5-1/4" speakers to be the very best they could be for the price. You'll find solid construction and finish, along with some eye-popping flair in its striking yellow mineral-filled polypropylene woofer. That woofer delivers impactful lows and is specially designed for a natural roll-off transition to the highs handled by the tweeter. And it's the aluminum edge-driven tweeter that gives the C1 Series its distinctive sound, setting it apart from other speakers at this price. You'll hear crisp detail in the high frequencies, incredible imaging, and minimal distortion no matter how you power them.

Why no grilles?

Most folks have no use for aftermarket grilles, opting to use their factory grilles for a streamlined look. With that in mind, JL Audio doesn't include grilles with the C1 Series, opting instead to incorporate those savings into building an all-round better speaker.

Product Highlights:

  • 2-way 5-1/4" speakers (pair)

These speakers produce a surprisingly full sound for a relatively small speaker. You can never go wrong with JL audio. I will be ordering a 6x9 set for the rear to round out my listening experience.

Pros: Very full, crisp sound

Cons: non I can think of

Very clear. Easy to install. I like the highs. I put them in the front kicker panel and roll bar of my 16 Jeep JKU Willys. They were much better than the 6.5 polks I had before

Pros: Highs, powerful sound. A great Jeep speaker.

Cons: Bass...but it's a 5.25. That's what a sub is for

Amazing!

Chris from Nashville on 5/10/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

JUST AMAZING!! I have these and the 6.5's. I had a problem and hated them. The techs left my Alpine F300 with the gain all the way down and the crossover all the way up. It sounded aweful! I was going to rip them out and throw them away and try the infinity kappas. With that in mind i decided messing around with my amp settings couldnt hurt. Holy cow they sound brilliant! Clear, clean and very robust! I drive a 1999 Mack and the truck idles at 80 decibels i needed something loud. If they sound amazing in a 20 year old farm just think what they can be in your small car! Also my F300's birth certificate shows it is doing 23 watts over list so im at 73 watts rms!

Pros: Loud, crisp, clean.

Cons: Not really a con put make sure you give them power!

JL Quality at an Affordable Price

Jack from Flint, MI on 3/5/2018

2004 Dodge Stratus
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

JL Quality at an affordable price. I have 4 of these lil' monsters hooked up to SoundStream Stealth 4 channel amp (found here > https://www.crutchfield.com/p_530ST410KD/Soundstream-Stealth-ST4-1000D.html). I was pleasantly surprised how loud these C1-525x's get for such a low cost. Not only do they pack plenty of volume, they have a solid amount of bass to them, so much so that it's a bit tricky to tune crossovers for them properly. Obviously they won't contend with the JL C5 series in clarity or volume... but... they are 1/6th the price, and worth every penny. I would highly recommend these speakers for anyone trying to do a decent upgrade from factory speakers without breaking their bank.

Pros: Affordable Loud Solid Durable

Cons: Slightly difficult to Tune

Great Product, Great Price!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced the factory speakers in the two front doors of my 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GT. These sound so much better than the factory stock speakers that came with the car. Enjoying my music even more with them. Running off of the stock head unit without issues. Mine comes with the 7-band graphic equalizer. Currently all equalizer frequencies are set at 0. I'm going to leave it there for now. It is sounding sweet!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very good sound quality and all around great speakers! My only critique is that there needs to be some sort of padding on the bracket that mounts the speaker to the door to keep it from vibrating with heavy bass. Otherwise, the speakers rock, and I have no other complaints.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the price, these speakers can't be beat! I have been using JL Audio products in my vehicles for over a decade for a reason. The sound quality is second to none. There are better quality speakers out there, but you will pay a premium for them. I purchased these speakers to replace the old, worn out stock speakers in my vehicle, and I am not disappointed. In fact, I just purchased another pair of them to install in the back doors. These paired with my new head unit sound fantastic. The SQ improves as they are broken in as well. Once again, JL Audio may cost a bit more than a few comparable brands, but the SQ is worth the extra expense!!!

Pros: Sound quality, excellent looking design, very nice highs and mids.

Cons: A bit more pricey than similar speakers, lows are decent for a speaker on the smaller side.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great front fit and sound. I have a 5 1/4 mount in my classic muscle car and these replaced the factory 8 ohm antiques well. The bass was better than expected with good highs from the tweeter. I had the C1 690 three ways in the back which can overpower these, but with a bit of tweaking from the amp, they run well.

Pros: Solid bass, unexpected in this size. Good fit, good highs as well.

Cons: None so far.

They'll be able to pull up all the information about speaker replacement to ensure the speakers will fit and work as you hope. Thanks! [ Larry  Oct 03, 2017 ]  Staff
If you like soft music and never have a desire to jam out then sure you dont need an amp. These are made to "fit" into most OEM existing speaker placements. That does not mean they are made to not require an amp. So unless your head unit is pushing 50x4 RMS (its not) then i suggest an amp. I am using the alpine F300 and it makes them sound amazing. [ ChrisP  May 11, 2018 ]
No you won't need an amp. They are designed to take place of your stock speakers. [ Issac  Aug 31, 2017 ]
Depending on the head unit (radio). Call the dealer or a Google search to find out power and resistance coming from radio. These are pretty efficient (plenty of volume per watts input). If the factory is 6 ohm, these will be louder. The short answer...these should be a good choice for factory replacement, but an amp always makes things better. [ Mark  Aug 31, 2017 ]
I put these in my 2017 Jeep Wrangler unlimited sound bar and they sound great without amp. I also have a touch screen CarPlay KENWOOD I upgraded to power it. [ Douglas  Aug 31, 2017 ]
